Fwd: Redemption and Messianic Return

His subtle, numinous essays make him a unique thinker of the 20th Century, impossible to categorize. He is one of my intellectual heroes; I recall a few of his insights or aphorisms nearly every day. In his writing, he left many puzzle pieces and crystalline shards to help us reflect on the secret workings of our world. Writing between World War One and Two, Benjamin foresaw humanity racing toward yet another catastrophic catharsis. He noted that humans possessed an innate need to "commingle" with the “cosmic forces”. If we don't find avenues for enacting this creatively and productively, through shared ritual and ceremony, it eventually happens destructively — convulsively — through wars and other mass disasters. While I was writing *How Soon Is Now <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlUE1vhCAU_DVy0yDgxx44tNk03aTpZZseejEIb5…>*, I often thought of Benjamin’s idea. I wondered if humanity has subconsciously decided to ignore the ecological crisis until it spins out of control. Perhaps we seek an initiatory threshold as a species — a collective event that forces us to confront the raw cosmic powers that modern society, with its focus on material comforts, tries to suppress and subdue? Benjamin pointed out the need for initiation as both a societal and individual process. Advocating for the value — even the necessity — of exploring altered states of consciousness, he wrote brilliant essays about his personal experiments with hashish and mescaline. These, he felt, revealed secret domains of psychic experience. In his essay, “The Angel of History,” Benjamin explored the idea of an approaching messianic return or redemption. He wrote that each generation possesses a "weak messianic power," the latent potential for a collective transmutation of consciousness. When one generation doesn't fulfill this potential, they pass it onto the next, where it persists as humanity’s secret hope and inexpressible yearning. I felt that redemptive yearning when I visited Jerusalem; it seemed trapped, vibrating in each ancient stone. Benjamin wrote that this messianic return would be expressed, finally, as a change in our relationship to time. We might call this a movement from time as perpetual postponement to time as immanence. We would shift in our consciousness from feeling trapped in a linear, progressive, historical time conceived as an unvarying extension to realizing many other dimensions of time -- mythological, synchronic, and archaic time, as well as, in the philosopher Jean Gebser's phrase, the "ever present origin." Psychedelics give us immediate access to these other time-realizations, in particular the sense of time as completion -- as an extravagant masterpiece of artistry, where “all time is present now” and every moment is perfect in its holistic integrity. As I explored in books such as *2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl* and *How Soon Is Now*, I tend to agree with 20th Century thinkers like Benjamin and Carl Jung who see, underlying the progression of historical events, an archetypal unfolding taking place within the collective Psyche. As a species, we seem to be driving toward something -- some inescapable culmination or collective realization. Our momentum keeps accelerating. This can be quite difficult, even overwhelming, to contemplate. I find it fascinating to watch the different forces that seem to be working, whether in dialectical opposition or collusion, toward whatever this end point may be. For instance, the engineers of Silicon Valley, gripped by their own quasi-religious faith in mechanization, believe we are heading for a technological Singularity where we fuse with our machines. Our transhuman destiny is to become part of the apparatus of a synthetic Artificial Intelligence that may have purposes totally different from our own. This supreme machine-mind might choose to keep us in zoos, or annex us without compunction. Christian Fundamentalists in the US, on the other hand, believe we are now in the time of Revelation and Apocalypse. They await the second coming of Jesus Christ. This messianic redemption will come in the form of an individual leader, while historical events proceed exactly as the literal text of Revelation of John proclaims. The faithful in Islam similarly anticipate the imminent coming of the Mahdi, “The Rightly Guided One,” a leader who will unite humanity in the last years before the End of Time and the completion of Allah's will. Everyone seems to be pushing toward their own version of the ascension or redemption or dimensional shift, or whatever we might call it. One of my pet hypotheses is that the evolution of human consciousness and civilization is, on another scale, also a kind of natural process, much like the development and birth of a fetus or the blossoming of a flower. There are certain things that must occur as part of the sequence, at particularly timed intervals — just as signals are transmitted from mother to developing baby in the womb at specific junctures, telling the fetus to start moving its limbs, organizing coherence in the developing brain, and so on. Similarly, we have seen roads, satellites, and the Internet developing rapidly, meshing humanity together as one “global brain” or “Noosphere.” Could the Coronavirus itself be one of these signals? I don’t see why not. While it was impossible to imagine before it happened, now that it is here, there seems to be a certain inevitability about it. It is forcing numerous transformations in human society and preparing us for the next future shocks. Various forces are using the pandemic to advance their own agendas — including the financial elite who flock to Davos for the World Economic Forum every year. This faction now promotes “The Great Reset,” a shift to a managed technocratic society that serves their interests by eliminating meaningful Democratic participation. In another essay, unpublished during his lifetime, Benjamin mused that Capitalism itself was a “religion of destruction.” While it promulgates an atheist ethos backed by the scientific materialist worldview, Capitalism, Benjamin argues, is actually an agonized cry against a universe devoid of meaning or transcendence. By accelerating the destruction of the Earth through industrialization and consumerism, Capitalism seeks to force the banished God to return, at the last possible moment, and reveal Him / Herself in His / Her Creation. I resonate with Benjamin’s excavation of this mythological structure underlying our profane and secular world: This yearning for redemption, this secret messianic impulse passed across generations, embedded in our economic system and technological drive toward dominance. Without acknowledging it, we sense we have our roles as part of a Mystery Play: We await the Great Reveal — that moment when the masks are pulled away and God shows us His / Her face. A deeply esoteric perspective that was once very distant and almost impossible to grasp seems to become more accessible to us with each passing year: As observers and witnesses, “we” — each of us individually; all of us collectively — are God or Brahma. We are that pure Consciousness, immortal and eternal, that “one without a second,” shattering itself into multitudinous individuated fragments of consciousness to explore its creativity, its capacity to love and feel, to choose an infinite number of pathways back toward unity or away toward fragmentation and disintegration. >From our individual, ego-based subjectivity, we believe we have free will. But as ancient Indian sacred texts like the Ashtavakra Gita <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlkMluhDAMhp9mcisKIUByyKGXvgbK4gGLkNAsg3…> tell us emphatically, this is an illusion. We are not “doing” anything. It is all just happening: *“Since you have been bitten by the black snake of the self-opinion that 'I am the doer', drink the nectar of faith in the fact that 'I am not the doer', and be happy.”* It is conceivable that humanity is on the verge of bringing about our extinction as a physical species. Our self-annihilation could occur on a much faster time-scale than we generally let ourselves imagine. Many of my friends who belong to the Extinction Rebellion movement, after researching the climate science in depth, believe these are, in all likelihood, the last days of mankind. Of course, the time before extinction could be marked by decades or perhaps even centuries of collapse as our ecosystems sputter out and cease to function. We really don’t know the timescale at this point. Along with our nuclear and biological weapons, the biggest red flag is the potential release of vast stores of Methane, frozen under the thawing Siberian permafrost, that could push temperatures 3 or 4 degrees celsius warmer within a decade or two. So far, even dire predictions of the rate of change have fallen behind the actuality of what’s happening. The collapse of the world’s insect population <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlkE2OwyAMhU9Tdon4SdpkwWI2c42IgJOgAZMB0y…> over the last decades is another canary in the coal mine. We have unleashed vast processes of destruction that we simply don’t understand. I brood over these ideas constantly. I have had many significant paranormal, psychic and shamanic experiences. Such episodes reveal that the nature of reality is far more permeable and malleable than we allow for. Extraordinary events that seem to violate natural “laws” do indeed occur. Such events reveal an underlying or implicate order, another set of principles that we don’t comprehend, as of yet. The occult has its own ethic and aesthetic. Increasingly, I feel this is the direction we must investigate. It is an area I intend to explore in future newsletters. <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVUcuSpSAM_ZrrTgt5KC5YdHXV_IbFIypzFWzA7n…> It doesn’t seem to me that our global civilization would have reached this present level of complexity for nothing. From an evolutionary viewpoint, that would seem tragically wasteful and, spiritually, a kind of cruel joke. On the other hand, perhaps our civilization and species are no different than the elaborate pattern of a Tibetan sand mandala which gets thrown to the wind after its design is complete. Another lineage from Tibetan Buddhism is called Chöd. Chöd practicioners perform meditations in charnel grounds and graveyards. They envision offering their body to be devoured by demons and deities as a way of dissolving the ego. It almost feels like we chose to participate in a collective, global Chöd ceremony, just by being born into this time. I am still fascinated by many of the same ideas and themes that I explored fifteen years ago, in *2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl*. Could we enter a new dimension of reality when enough people undergo a certain level of initiation? Does something shift when a vanguard of people has awakened to validate paranormal experience, synchronicity, and the “Reality of the Psyche” to the point where we can accept these as givens? From that foundation, could we collectively access hidden powers and invisible dimensions of being. Could we then apply these powers as new technologies for healing our world? Could this present generation on Earth be the one that accesses humanity’s latent messianic yearning, plugging into it as a psycho-electric current for collective transformation? I don’t know. But even at this late date, I remain curious and hopeful. ** I just published a new book, *Conspiranoia*, as an E Book on Amazon (Currently *“Number One New Release in Political Philosophy”*). I hope *Conspiranoia <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJw1kDFvwyAQhX9N2GwBdm08MCStOnVopA7tZJ3hEq…>* helps people find clarity in some of these murky areas. Generally, when I write a book, my primary motivation is to clarify what is going on — for for my own understanding, and then to share it with others. That is what I tried to do here. To summarize my basic thesis, I find nuggets of truth and core insights in many of the conspiracy theories, along with many exaggerations and distortions. Sifting through them, I propose a unifying theme underlying many different movements from across the political spectrum. This theme is the need for humanity to recognize, resist and rebel against the rapidly intensifying power of technocracy, particularly when this technology is placed in the hands of sociopaths and psychopaths. A technological control agenda increasingly infiltrates every aspect of our existence, amplified by the Coronavirus pandemic with the possibility of mandated vaccines, biometric identities, etcetera. A general revulsion against technocracy underlies the anger against Gates, the fervor for Qanon, the Anti-vax movement and the Yellow Jackets in France, as well as Extinction Rebellion on the Left Wing ecological side, and much of the pro-Trump enthusiasm. The artificial divisions between races and classes, the animosity between Left and Right, helps the control agenda of the corporate and political elites. We have the possibility of organizing a unified global movement against the technocratic agenda, as represented by the World Bank, World Economic Forum, Neoliberalism, etcetera. In order to do this, we must define the alternative <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlkMtuwyAQRb_G7GzxSAxesKhUpVl103ZtYZg6KB…>. The antidote is certainly not any form of Libertarianism. The alternative is a system that shifts power down to the local and bioregional level while scaling up regenerative techniques and industries — rapidly and exponentially. We must “de-grow” from hyper-industrialism, but also establish new forms of global infrastructure such as social networks for transparent decision-making. As part of this infrastructure, we need an ongoing public referendum on the future direction of technological development, which now occurs with little public oversight or ethical principle. Some of the conspiracy theories aim at the right targets, but wildly exaggerate or miss the mark in other ways. I vividly remember being introduced to the idea that Hilary Clinton and other members of the elite (Kissinger etc) were feasting on Adrenochrome removed from the brains of babies that they ritually sacrificed in Satanic rituals. I was in California at the time, with David “Avocado” Wolfe, the raw food guru, and he presented this idea to me with full conviction. This was something like ten years ago, when he and I were closer friends. I remember I felt intrigued, titillated by the idea… I didn’t believe it but I was open to it, surprised by it. It is possible that Avocado may be one of the main originators of this idea. I not sure where he got it from. Recently, he has gone full Trumpian. David Wilcock is another figure in the “conspirituality” movement who moved a lot of energy in this direction, although he made repeated predictions that have not come to pass. Gaia TV has been very susceptible to this narrative, generally. Sean Stone, son of Oliver Stone, is a committed Qanon and Trump supporter who also delves into New Age esotericism. Michael Tellinger, from South Africa, also got captivated by the “Trump as Savior” mania. I suspect that one reason Qanon went viral is that people like Avocado and Wilcock (myself as well, although I am a Leftist / anarchist by nature and don’t vibe with authoritarians) are on the Schizotypal Personality Disorder spectrum. This brings with it a tendency to magical thinking, messianic convictions, and distorted ideas (which doesn’t mean people with SPD are always wrong, just as paranoiacs can have enemies). Less severe than schizophrenia, Schizotypal Personality Disorder is more common than normally recognized. People on the SPD spectrum often make up the rank and file of revolutionary movements. They easily gravitate to extremist perspectives and convince others to join them. I argue in *Conspiranoia* that the attraction of Qanon for the masses stems from a widespread feeling of betrayal. The working classes feel ripped off by the neoliberal Democratic establishment over the last decades. The Democrats are just as tied to the wealthy donor class as the Republicans. Clinton, Obama, and Biden take their marching orders from Wall St. Months before the election, Biden met with the heads of investment firms like Black Rock. He assured them there would be no substantive legislation reining in the excesses of the parasitic financial class if he was elected. The working classes are enraged by how the neoliberal elite have betrayed them, over and over again. They seek to change this dynamic, which is not easy in a calcified, corrupt two-party system. Qanon gives people an occult overview of the forces at play. Also, Qanon engages with people’s inherent, and I would say accurate sense that there are invisible, occult forces that influence the course of historical events. The focus on child sex trafficking makes Qanon believers feel unassailably righteous. While child sex trafficking is a major problem around the world, there is zero evidence it is happening on the scale that Qanon reports in the US. On the other hand, Epstein in the US and Jimmy Saville in the UK reveal something very dark about the relationship between power and ritual sexual abuse which needs to be acknowledged. I believe that we need to study and understand, as best we can, the ways that archetypal forces or “super-sensible” beings affect and manipulate us. I explored this in an earlier short book, *The Occult Control System <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJx1kk1v3CAQhn-NfWPFh83HwYc20UZJlVZqUynqxc…>*. In general, Fascist movements are better able to mobilize the archetypal forces in the collective unconscious. Moderate and progressive movements, rooted in scientism, deny the existence of these forces — at their peril. As George Monbiot recently wrote <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlkN2OgyAQhZ-m3GmA2ooXXOzNvoYZYVRSRANDjf…> *,* unless the Democrats move much farther to the Left and actually redistribute wealth, we will inevitably see the rise of a much more effective autocrat in the US in the near future (assuming, of course, that Trump does leave office, which is not certain yet). Like Monbiot, I don’t see much likelihood in the Democrats fulfilling the Left Wing’s dreams. I would be happy to be surprised. Eventually, the ecological emergency will intrude on our political and economic system in an increasingly catastrophic way. This will change the game drastically as it transforms all of our lives. I still find it stunning that, despite our communications tools, we remain so numb, inert, and disorganized in the face of this threat. We wasted the last decades which could have been used to salvage our climate and ecosystems. Our technocratic and financial elites bear the greatest share of responsibility for our collective inaction. It seems to be unfolding with the inexorability of a Greek tragedy, on a planetary scale, during our lifetimes. Let’s hold in our hearts the prayer that all of this chaos and confusion is part of some larger evolutionary cycle. We need to experience it at this time, so we can grow beyond it, both individually and as a species. *Please join our Regenerative Future network <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlUMtqwzAQ_BrrVrOWXFs-6BAIubW0px6NLK1tJZ…> if you want to dive deeper into these issues. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Open Food Network Australia <hello(a)openfoodnetwork.org.au> Date: Fri, Nov 20, 2020 at 5:50 AM Subject: Regen Ag knowledge commons launched, collaborative logistics pilot project, Victorian producers - we need your produce! To: <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> Resources and activities to build a better food system. View this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/ef2090724a48/regen-ag-knowledge-commons-launched-collabo…> Open Food Network exists to power fair and transparent supply networks that reconnect communities and regenerate the earth. Sometimes it's easier to see the work we're doing in just one part of this system, but as you read through this month's newsletter we hope you get a sense of the many ways we're reimagining food systems, supporting people with the resources and guidance needed, and working hard to power new possibilities. Read on for the launch of Australia's first ever database of the evidence supporting regenerative agriculture, new collaborative logistics projects, and more. *New regenerative agriculture resources* *The solutions are at hand for agriculture to become a driving force in the regeneration of landscapes, waterways and biodiversity, while sequestering carbon and actively reversing climate change.* There are many good reasons to support regenerative agriculture but the most significant is as a response to the climate emergency. The food system contributes up to 37% of TOTAL greenhouse emissions. At Open Food Network we are actively working to support wide-scale uptake of regenerative agriculture including the major land-use levers to mitigate climate change. Open Food Network also works on a key enabler of regenerative agriculture: values-based supply networks. When farmers receive a fair price for food, they have more opportunity to shift practices and undertake regenerative methods. *New resource launched!* We have started creating a knowledge commons of resources that provide a mix of research about regenerative agriculture and the systems that enable it, stories from regenerative farmers, and more. This includes the first open database drawing together peer-reviewed evidence underpinning regenerative agriculture and its uptake. Access resources <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> *Open Road: a collaborative logistics project in Victoria* Open Food Network and a number of partners are currently scoping a pilot project for a short supply chain logistics service for Victorian producers called Open Road. We have some seed funding but the scope and location of the pilot will depend on securing further funds and also on active collaboration from regional hubs and producers in the Hume, Western/Central and Gippsland regions of Victoria. We are planning a webinar in each of these three regions in the coming months. If you'd like to attend the webinar to learn more about this project or to get involved as a producer, regional hub or partner, then please contact Georgia Savage. Email Georgia <[email protected]?subject=Open%20Road%20expression%20of%20interest> Make sure that you register for our next webinar with Hepburn Shire, looking at Collaborative Logistics: How to start working with other farmers to reach customers. Register here <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> *Open Food Network Connect* We now have a dedicated brokering service that helps to connect producers with supply and community food enterprises with demand! *WE HAVE DEMAND!* This month, we have a community food enterprise in Melbourne looking for the following Victorian-grown produce to be delivered every day, Monday to Friday: Potatoes: 100 kgs Onions: 100 kgs Carrots: 100 kgs Apples: 140kgs Oranges: 160 kgs Green vegetables (bock-you, choysum, spinach): 150 bunches Tomatoes: 110 kg If you're a Victorian producer who could supply one or more produce lines please get in touch! Orders and delivery times are flexible and open to discussion. Contact us now! <georgia(a)openfoodnetwork.org.au> *Learning about food systems* Listen to Open Food Network’s Kirsten Larsen and Serenity Hill talk systemic change on the *Futuresteading Podcast* <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> *Nutrition Society of Australia webinar: Fair and Resilient Food Systems*. Kirsten helped explore how Australia’s food systems have changed over time, what we can learn from history, and how nutritionists and consumers can support a fair and resilient food system. Click below to get all the detail on these exciting updates. Read Software Newsletter <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> *New team members!* Meet our new team member, Renata Cumming. Renata grew up in Melbourne and spent weekends and holidays on her uncle and aunt's farm in North East Victoria which led to her love of farming and influenced her decision to study Agriculture at the University of Melbourne, Dookie Campus, and a diverse career in Agriculture. She has always had a strong desire to help people understand how food is produced and encourage them to make better informed decisions that support Australian Agriculture, reduce food miles and make the most of regional and seasonal produce. Along with Shirley Saywell, she is a co-founder of Strathbogie Local; a volunteer run 'click and collect' online farmers market that was set up at the start of the Covid restrictions to support farmers who had lost their primary source of revenue with the closure of restaurants and farmers markets and link them to customers who wanted access to high quality local produce. *Open Food Network Global* One of the most rewarding things about our open source global model is that anyone can start a new Open Food Network instance where they are in the world, and shape it around their local needs. In this month's global meeting we met the founders of Open Food Network Guatemala, who are using the platform to support Indigenous food sovereignty. We also shared the excitement of Open Food Network Colombia as they started accepting their first sales through the platform. Their enthusiasm is infectious, and a reminder of how amazing it is to build a new community of eaters and farmers from the ground up. But the best part is the sense of an ever-growing community of people all contributing to the same shared infrastructure and vision of a better food system. All of the work done so far, and support from people like you as our community members, have kept building an awesome open source platform that new countries can pick up, start using, and start contributing to. Thank you for being part of the global Open Food Network community! *In other news* *Young Farmers Connect* There are three awesome Young Farmers Connect <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> events coming up. Fwd: Sanctuaries of Democracy: Building the Christian Left in 2021

Now that Biden is president-elect, the need for an organized Christian left is more urgent than ever. Christians invested in protecting and deepening democracy cannot replace the work of politics with moralizing denunciations or platitudes of opposition and prophetic critique. We cannot settle for pleas to the powerful to reconsider their attitudes when what is so desperately needed is a mass movement to dispossess the powerful. Additionally, we're announcing some exciting ICS initiatives for 2021 that will provide concrete ways to help Christians and churches organize. *Read our statement * <https://gmail.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9fbb79dbb151fbeff3094bb1e&…> [image: Twitter] <https://gmail.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9fbb79dbb151fbeff3094bb1e&…> [image: Facebook] <https://gmail.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9fbb79dbb151fbeff3094bb1e&…> [image: Website] <https://gmail.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9fbb79dbb151fbeff3094bb1e&…> Want to change how you receive these emails? In order to learn a critical and self-reflexive approach in this subject, you may look to critique and contextualization from various sources: - on the radical left, current critics have been the people working around Jacobin magazine (Ben Burgis, Bhaskar Sunkara); with people like webcaster Michael Brooks (identified as 'integral left'), and from the radical wing of the black African-American left, with researchers on class and race such as Adolphe and Toure Reed. Also radical philosophers and journalistic commentators such as Glenn Greenwald, Slavoj Zizek, Chomsky, and Matt Taibi belong to this broad camp, which was initiated with the Vampire Castle essay of Marc Fisher, listed below. (see also the Dyab Abou Jahah quote). There is also strong critique emanating from the radical feminist camp. - on the center left (in the U.S. often called the 'liberal left'), there are several groups active: 1) the group of Grievance scholars, i.e. Helen Pluckrose, James Lindsay and Peter Boghossian which focuses on the genealogy of the current identitiarian ideology (New Discourses; Aero magazine); 2) the group around Brett Weinstein, Heather Heying, and Eric Weinstein (Dark Horse Podcast, the Portal); 3) the group around Rebel Wisdom documentary network and journalist David Fuller. - Center-left African-American critique: James McWhorter, Coleman Hugues Key Articles[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Category:Identity_Politics&a…> ]Introductions[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Category:Identity_Politics&a…> ] As recommended by the site, Social Justice Evolution <http://socialjusticeevolution.org/> - "It will be helpful for visitors to this site to begin with the distinction between the Civil Rights movements of the 1950’s and 60’s, -which were inspired by the principles of universal liberalism- and contemporary Critical Social Justice (CSJ) movements, which draw upon a different set of principles including social constructivism and group identity. For a concise examination of these differences, we recommend the essay, “Identity Politics Does Not Continue the Work of the Civil Rights Movements <https://areomagazine.com/2018/09/25/identity-politics-does-not-continue-the…> ”. - "It will also be helpful to understand the distinction between the general principles of social justice -which most people rightly support- and the specific ideology that many are now calling Critical Social Justice. For a brief primer on this distinction, we recommend this short essay by Rohan Loveland called Universal Social Justice <https://newdiscourses.com/2020/04/universal-social-justice-alternative-crit…>: A Necessary Alternative to Critical Social Justice. Fwd: [bgcon] SILENT WORKS · Winter School · Artworks · Online Access

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Krystian Woznicki <kw(a)berlinergazette.de> Date: Thu, Nov 19, 2020 at 4:32 PM Subject: [bgcon] SILENT WORKS · Winter School · Artworks · Online Access To: <digi-yards(a)berlinergazette.de> Hi, the Berliner Gazette Winter School SILENT WORKS is making a significant portion of its on-site exhibition available online, including video and audio works. More to come. The idea is to create a sustainable public archive of resources dealing with hidden labor in AI-capitalism. Emerging at a critical juncture as world society is experiencing one of its most severe crisis in recent years, the artworks not only reflect this moment, but also provide timely impulses for emerging struggles. Remaining accessible for years to come, future viewers and listeners will be able to look back when likely still struggling to come to terms with what happened in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic caught us on the wrong foot. STORIES OF LABOR USUALLY INVISIBILIZED IN THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF 'ESSENTIAL SERVICES' *Diego de la Vega Coffee Co-op* (Mexico/US) "We are addressing the conflicting perspectives of workers, activists, and communities regarding the case of the opening of Awesome in NYC. Based on our group’s organizing of sustainable alternatives to contemporary capitalism, we’ll connect our experiences with systematically invisibilized labor struggles inside the Awesome empire." https://vimeo.com/476295368 *eeefff* (Belarus/Russia) "We hired random people from a post-Soviet headhunter platform whose labor is usually rendered invisible; they work for the machinery of micro-tasking, crowdsourcing, stress, A/B testing, and do all the work that is hidden at the end. And we have created a fictional space for them to talk and live through this alienated work." https://vimeo.com/474958896 *Melanie Gilligan* (Canada) "Gilligan’s work subverts and recodes the status quo that defines care workers as part of the system’s infrastructure, and that – so long as this infrastructure functions in a frictionless fashion – literally invisibilizes these very workers. In contrast to that, the artist presents care workers as an integral but neglected part of (social) infrastructure, prompting viewers to think about how societies could ensure that they remain visible, recognized, and valued for the indispensable work they do." https://vimeo.com/479369903 *Into the Black Box* (Italy) "Following their objective of reconstructing the transformations that Amazon is spearheading in the world of work, Into the Black Box’s visual cartography not only enables an elaborate critique of the Amazon model and its restructuring of labor, but also offers a glimpse into the potential for labor struggles yet to come." https://berlinergazette.de/wp-content/uploads/Into-the-Amazon-Box.pdf *Petero Kalulé* (Uganda/UK) and *AM Kanngieser* (Australia) "With regard to concrete AI labor practices, Petero Kalulé (Uganda/UK) and AM Kanngieser (Australia) tackle the teaching, training, and supervising of AI and how they are circumscribed under an AI design and ethics program. They look at examples of training, teaching, regulation, and supervision, e.g., online platform content moderators and how their knowledge as subjects of labor is programmed, classed, and unhumaned on an ongoing basis as a part of a global capitalist imaginary." https://soundcloud.com/berliner-gazette/ai-kanngieser-kalule *Peng* (Germany) "If Lieferando is somewhat representative of today’s AI-capitalism, then Peng's action prompts us to think how we can act within, against, and beyond this dehumanizing system of exploitation, extraction, and control." https://vimeo.com/478833658 INTERVENTIONS INTO THE UNCONCIOUS AND UNWAGED 'LABOR OF LOOKING' *Shinseungback Kimyonghun* (South Korea) "Equipped with a facial recognition system enabling it to detect if a face presents itself, the mirror questions our relationship to our face as capital, and our looking as labor that AI technologies render into value – or don’t." https://vimeo.com/479338048 *Benjamin Heisenberg* (Swiss) "In addressing the labor of looking in AI-capitalism, Heisenberg’s work challenges the widespread assumption that man is no longer key to the inner workings of the capitalist world, which is ostensibly run by the high-tech version of Adam Smith’s “invisible hand.” Instead, his work challenges the visitor to think how we as laborers can reposition ourselves in the face of an invisible hand that needs us to develop its power." https://vimeo.com/479456176 MAKING AUDIBLE OTHERWISE SILENCED STRUGGLES AROUND 'RESEARCH LABOR' *NoCyberValley* (Germany) "NoCyberValley is a loose alliance of activists who has initiated various forms of protest against the emergence of the Cyber Valley – 'Europe’s largest research consortium in the field of artificial intelligence with partners from science and industry.' The visual impressions from the protest against Cyber Valley in the diary "unmuted" – exhibited at SILENT WORKS – are supplemented by an audio-loop sampling recordings from various moments of the protest. Sometimes pensive, sometimes angry and loud, it is a document of common people arguing about the future (of technology and the city)." https://soundcloud.com/berliner-gazette/nocybervalley-silent-works FURTHER READING... From “Paper Tigers,” his examination of why Asian-Americans remain underrepresented in leaderships positions, to “The Face of Seung-Hui Cho,” his meditation on the shooter who killed 33 people at Virginia Tech, he has traced America’s shifting understanding of race. But over the past years, the focus of Yang’s work has subtly shifted. He is now trying to chronicle and explain what he calls the “successor ideology,” the constellation of ideas that seek to usurp liberalism, and which others have called by such names as “wokeness” or “social justice.” In the latest episode of *The Good Fight*, Yascha Mounk and Wesley Yang discuss the precise definition of the successor ideology; the need for genuine empathy when exchanging ideas; and what forms of cultural sensitivity are truly inclusive as opposed to alienating Please do listen and spread the word about The Good Fight.
