Fwd: The Small, the Various, and the Personal

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Schumacher Center for a New Economics < schumacher(a)centerforneweconomics.org> Date: Tue, Dec 22, 2020 at 11:27 PM Subject: The Small, the Various, and the Personal To: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> view this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/centerforneweconomics.org/small-various-personal?e=639a1…> <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> *“When distance and convenience sets in; the small, the various and the personal wither away.” ― Jane Jacobs, The Death and Life of Great American Cities* Dear Michel Bauwens, 2021 is sure to generate a contagious celebration of neighborhoods and of the small, locally-owned businesses that shape those communities. The events of 2020 have demonstrated how fragile yet vital these businesses are. Their style, diversity, and idiosyncrasies create the unique character of our respective Main Streets. Their storefronts and products reflect regional tastes and aesthetics; they provide places to gather, share information, and practice the art of citizenship. They offer our youth their first jobs. They sponsor play groups, diversity training workshops, children’s choruses, and food pantries – not tackling the big national problems, but certainly making headway on the small, stubborn, local ones. Shopkeepers and restauranteurs reinvented their operations and menus as the virus spread, pivoting quickly to curbside pickup and outdoor dining to continue serving their communities even during a pandemic. *Jane Jacobs* Jane Jacobs, keen observer of city life and re-imaginer of economic theory, saw in this very diversity the seeds for revitalization and growth. She bemoaned the outcomes of conventional planning in which old buildings are replaced with uniform high-rises that separate living spaces from the animated traffic of commerce. She cheered the messiness and inconvenience of towns that lead residents to cross streets and duck into shops, engaging in unplanned meetings and conversations that act like petri dishes for new enterprises and ideas. Under the seeming disorder of the old city, wherever the old city is working successfully, is a marvelous order for maintaining the safety of the streets and the freedom of the city. It is a complex order. Its essence is intricacy of sidewalk use, bringing with it a constant succession of eyes. This order is all composed of movement and change, and although it is life, not art, we may fancifully call it the art form of the city and liken it to the dance — not to a simple-minded precision dance with everyone kicking up at the same time, twirling in unison and bowing off en masse, but to an intricate ballet in which the individual dancers and ensembles all have distinctive parts which miraculously reinforce each other and compose an orderly whole. The ballet of the good city sidewalk never repeats itself from place to place, and in any once place is always replete with new improvisations. ― Jane Jacobs, *The Death and Life of Great American Cities* Local economies may not be the most efficient economies, but they are the richest. They engage citizens not just as consumers, but rather as multi-faceted human beings. The result is a daily life constructed not around superfluous *stuff*, but connection to the people, stories, and landscapes that make a community. *Downtown Great Barrington, MA during a previous year's Holiday Stroll hosted by the Southern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce.* For forty years the Schumacher Center has innovated programs that encourage citizen support for local businesses and local economies. Local currencies <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> keep the wealth of a region circulating in the locality, identifying and uplifting home-grown enterprises embedded in their communities and strengthening local supply chains. Face-to-face transactions mediated by paper currency bring users to town where they meet shopkeepers and recognize the many ways their lives intertwine as parents, board members, theater enthusiasts, hospital volunteers, trail hikers, and more. Community land trusts <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> (CLTs) provide low-cost access to manufacturing sites, retail space, and productive farmland, as well as workforce housing. CLTs are catchers’ mitts for donated land, putting it under permanent community control and offering 98-year leases for uses determined in collaboration with the donor, such as designation as an apple orchard, food processing plant, or local bookstore. CLTs give citizens a way to foster development while allowing new enterprises to build equity in buildings and other improvements to the land. Community Supported Industry <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> (CSI) brings together the business community with retired professionals, local officials, social investors, non-profit leaders, and youth to explore what leakages are occurring in the local economy to determine how, working together, they can build new import-replacement businesses to fill those gaps. In this way, new enterprises grow organically out of knowledge of the workforce, raw materials, cultural preferences, and appropriate scale of the community, rather than by wooing a large corporation to the area to fulfill these needs. Join us in 2021 and every day in hearty celebration and loyal patronage of our small businesses. Your annual donation to the Schumacher Center helps us continue our advocacy. Fwd: Empowered or Entasked? Distributed Organizing's Unfulfilled Potential

As I mentioned last week, I’d like to keep this publication free to all, but will only be able to do that if enough of you with the means to do so choose to subscribe <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVkM-OhCAMxp9mOBpABTxw2Mu8hsHSUTIIButufP…>. You can do it for as little as $5 per month, or pick the “founding member” option and fill in whatever amount you can. Many thanks! Now, back to our regular ruminations… If you were a Biden volunteer, or want to look under the hood to understand how its distributed digital organizing team of 28 people managed to mobilize 160,000 volunteers who together made 88 million calls to voters, held 200,000 “relational conversations,” sent 150 million texts, and supported 11,000 supporter-led events, cumulatively managing one-third of the campaign’s total voter contacts, then this detailed post-mortem <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVUMtuhSAQ_ZrLrgZQARcsuulvGB5zlVwEA2Mb-_…> by *Nathan Rifkin*, the campaign’s director of distributed organizing, is a must-read. I really have to take issue with his argument, however, that what the Biden campaign built by necessity because of the pandemic “is part of a long organizing tradition in America, from Huerta, to Alinsky, to Gompers, and countless more, that stretches back centuries.” To the degree that distributed organizing removes people from their local contexts and turns them into just-in-time “act now place agnostic” volunteers assigned shifts on a rolling basis, distributed organizing is more like the kind of dehumanizing industrialized factory work that organizers like Samuel Gompers fought against. Or, to be even more sharp about it, it’s like the Amazon warehouse solution to retail, with campaign volunteers as the worker bees handling incoming rush jobs, only to do good things like help remind voters where their polling place is rather than box up a toaster. It’s “Resisting Alone <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlUM2OhCAMfprhNgZQEA8c9rKvYRC6DhkEA3U3vv…>,” 2020-style. To be fair, Rifkin is describing a special situation—a national presidential campaign, plus one that chose (perhaps unwisely) to stop almost all face-to-face campaigning because of COVID-19. To be able to convert thousands of stuck-at-home supporters into helpful cogs in a larger machine was miraculous. But I’m not sure it’s a model for anything beyond this special case. Whenever I see a campaign staffer or politician, for that matter, use the word “empower” when the word “entask” is more accurate, I think back to a post my friend *Zephyr Teachout* wrote 13 years ago entitled “You Don’t Have the Power <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlkMuOhCAQRb9Gdm14KOCCxSxmfsMgVCtpBINld_…>.” “Power is when you get to decide the rules of the game, not when you get to play it,” she wrote. “A factory worker uses a lot of force, but doesn’t—not in his daily job—have power.” She went on, with great prescience: “It is important to distinguish between distributed work and decentralized power. Distributed work will be clearly central to future electoral politics. Candidates will experiment with more complicated Internet-enabled phone banking matching systems, door-knocking systems, and donor incentive systems. However, distributed work is not necessarily work in which the power is decentralized. The fact that I can send a suggestion into Coke.com <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlUMuOwyAM_JpyjICE14HDXvobiICboBKIiLOr_P…> or participate in a contest about their next marketing effort does not meaningfully transform my lack of power in the organization into a fact of power. Likewise, the fact that a citizen might sign a petition or engage in a massive distributed literature-dropping effort may show great ingenuity on the part of the designer of that system, and involve new technologies, and enable people to be part of the political process—without giving any person involved any meaningful political power, or meaningful way to have strategic input or make creative decisions.” Now, let’s look at how Rifkin uses the word “empower,” which shows up multiple times in his essay. [emphases added] “Distributed organizing programs, as this post will explain, represent a radical vision of volunteer organizing, an evolution of caucus organizers and neighborhood team leaders for the internet age. A decentralized organization to train and *empower* hundreds of thousands of volunteer organizers to achieve goals otherwise impossible with only paid staff.” “Put another way, the goal of the distributed model is to *empower* large numbers of volunteers to act in decentralized unison towards a common purpose, with processes and leadership to support the creativity members of the distributed team show as they work, frequently independently, to achieve the group’s goal.” “The primary challenge was not how to recruit the most volunteers, though that certainly played a role. The core challenge was how best to *empower* volunteers to engage in the most impactful work.” “[The team] then reinvented relational metrics, which have often relied on ‘messages sent’ or ‘user contacts upload to an app’, to instead track volunteer leaders, voter contact shifts, and finally, reports filed on the number of conversations our volunteers had and what they learned through their conversation — how is your contact voting? Who are they voting for? Tracking reports on conversations vs. just ‘messages sent’ was critical to ensure conversations were actually happening — and *empowered* volunteers to reach out to their people however they felt comfortable. Volunteers didn’t need to use Vote Joe to have their conversations. They could do so via phone, social media, or text message, and simply use the Vote Joe app to report back to the campaign.” “As a series of principles, distributed organizing programs organize and train teams of volunteer leadership, *empower* volunteers to act now from wherever they may be, and build out new technical tools and solutions to engage in big, structural organizing.” “While the line between ‘Distributed’ and organizing is ultimately artificial, the impact of organizing programs that radically trust and *empower* volunteer leadership is anything but. Distributed programs should not be looked on as something distinct from the long tradition of organizing. The practice, and the vision, of hundreds of thousands of volunteers and organizers making up a distributed program, is just one part of a long organizing tradition.” Actually, now that I think about it, Rifkin isn’t entirely wrong about where this kind of organizing fits into the labor tradition. It’s a form of hierarchical organizing that many labor activists may indeed recognize, the one where power flows upward into the hands of a few leaders and decisions are delivered downward, with little to no participation from the rank-and-file in those decisions. So, I’m not as enthusiastic as he seems to be about the prospects of campaigns getting better at this kind of organizing. It’s very Zoom webinar with the chat disabled, if you get my drift. All that said, I’m happy to see that Rifkin has started his own newsletter, The Distro <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVkM2OhSAMhZ_msjSA8uOCxWzmNQw_VclFMFhn4t…>. His bio reads, “Chasing utopian futures. Director of Distributed Organizing @JoeBiden & @TheDemocrats. Was @ewarren. @IronStache, @HFA, @Bernie2016 & more. We too easily write off a lack of engagement from voters as a lack of interest in the values that we stand for. Instead, our party, perhaps from the pressure of First in the Nation or to impress donors, has calculated with surgical precision a plan for who gets a door knock, a mail piece, a call — and who does not.” Likewise, this story <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlkEGOhCAQRU_T7DSAgLhgMZu5hkGoVtIIBsrpeP…> in the Washington Monthly by *Gabby Birenbaum* suggests the key to the revival of Democrats in Orange County, California—a longtime Republican stronghold—has been the growth of local clubs. --A coalition of advocacy organizations led by Accountable Tech have sent an open letter <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwtUMtuhDAM_JrNrSgPSMIhh730N1BwvBAtJCiYVv…> to the Biden transition urging it to “to treat disinformation as a fundamental and intersectional threat – one that stands as a barrier to progress on every issue.” Among the letter’s good recommendations: pushing Congress to revive the Office of Technology Assessment, putting online voter suppression on an equal footing with offline; and appointing a disinformation expert to the COVID-19 taskforce. Whether that means improving your archiving and inventories, working with multiple platforms, handling online sales and accounting, using social media, online marketing and communications or something else, we (Kendraio and CultureBanked) would like to initially interview 10 artists about their online habits and needs to see how we can work together. Currently we have resources to work directly with users and have opportunities for artists to develop useful and powerful tools according to their own purposes. There is no charge to the artist and all we require is a commitment of an initial hour for the interview plus any further time spent working on developing your own stuff! I'd be really grateful if you would forward this email to any artists or contacts you think might be interested and thanks for reading. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: CECOP <cecop(a)cecop.coop> Date: Mon, Dec 14, 2020 at 9:40 PM Subject: ALL FOR ONE - Campaign conclusion and conference highlights To: <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Worker-owned cooperatives & non-standard work *ALL FOR ONE* Conference highlights View this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/cecop/cecop-conference-all-for-one-save-the-date-10-june…> *ALL FOR ONE - Conclusion of campaign and conference highlights* Our campaign and conference may be over, but we are not done promoting cooperative solutions for non-standard work challenges! As you may know, CECOP released a report titled ALL FOR ONE <https://cecop.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3a463471cd0a9c6cf744bf5f8&i…> that shows the contributions made by worker-owned cooperatives to the issues related to non-standard employment, such as precariousness, low income, insufficient social security coverage and workers’ isolation. Originally planned through a live conference, our promotion effort was transformed into a pandemic-proof dissemination strategy: an online campaign topped with an online conference. *The campaign* We had a month-long communication campaign on social media, in which we conveyed the key political messages of the report through several visuals containing quotes from CECOP members (#CECOPvoices), and a three-part docuseries <https://cecop.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3a463471cd0a9c6cf744bf5f8&i…> . The protagonists of our docuseries are Tommi Viitamies, from Lilith Cooperative (Finland), Francesca Martinelli, researcher on platform coops, from Fondazione Centro Studi Doc (Italy), and CECOP President Giuseppe Guerini. If you haven't had the chance to watch it, we highly recommend it! Would you like to see all of our visuals released during the campaign? We made an album! Take a look at it here <https://cecop.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3a463471cd0a9c6cf744bf5f8&i…> . *The conference* Our flagship conference happened on December 3rd. We discussed strategies undertaken by several worker-owned cooperative models and their reactions to the challenges of non-standard work. We had some great active speakers, and more than 100 participants from all over Europe. It was surely an event to remember. Did you miss it? You can read all about it here <https://cecop.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3a463471cd0a9c6cf744bf5f8&i…> . That is all for now. We would like to thank all of our speakers, *Sara Lafuente* (European Trade Union Institute),* Sarah de Heusch* (Smart Belgium), *Noémie de Grenier* (Coopaname France), *Paloma Arroyo* (COCETA Spain), *Anna Banczyk* (European Commission), *Giuseppe Guerini* (CECOP President), and each and everyone of you for following our campaign and participating in our conference. Seaports history, migrations, transfers and flows between > different continents and oceans, informal mechanisms of empire building, > women as brokers and go-betweens in overseas empires and the environmental > implications of European colonization are key-subjects of her current > research. > > Summary: > For a long time, European historiography has been associating empire > building processes almost exclusively with state policies and institutions. > Historical outcomes of the early modern empires tended to be focused > predominantly on central power strategies and imperial rivalries, > monopolies, warfare strategies and political disputes between European > colonisers. This ended up by feeding a nationalist and Eurocentric analysis > of empire building which cannot fully explain the rise of a Global Age in > the Early Modern Period. It cannot explain the world-wide scale of > communications, the building of multicultural societies, or even the global > transfers between oceans and continents. > > This brings up a new set of research questions and hypotheses which many > researchers in colonial studies are beginning to ask. Could it be that the > sustainability of empires, in particular the Portuguese multicontinental > overseas empire, are based on the commoners and their entrepreneurial > initiatives as much as on central powers policies, military and commercial > strategies? Could it be that European empires were also, and maybe even > predominantly, sustained by cooperative patterns and agent-based networks? > If this turned out to be true, historians would have to leave aside the > strict focus on the structures, on the systems, on the State, and on the > macro level. Fwd: [bgcon] SILENT WORKS · Winter School · Projects · Online Now!
by Michel Bauwens 08 Dec '20

08 Dec '20

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Krystian Woznicki <kw(a)berlinergazette.de> Date: Tue, Dec 8, 2020 at 5:02 PM Subject: [bgcon] SILENT WORKS · Winter School · Projects · Online Now! To: <digi-yards(a)berlinergazette.de> Hi, undoubtedly the heart of the SILENT WORKS conference, five workshops brought activists, researchers, and cultural workers from more than 20 countries together. To tackle the hidden labor in AI-capitalism, the workshops took five different approaches: AAI; CAPTCHA Factory; Dull, Dangerous + Dirty; Logistical Noir; and Invisible Organization. Using Big Blue Button, an open source alternative to corporate ‘data surveillance’ tools like Zoom, participants of the three-day online workshops (November 12-14) were invited to come up with cooperative projects. The workshop projects are now available as online resources and include multimedia stories and utopian scenarios. Please check out the projects by scrolling down. *AAI* The term Artificial Artificial Intelligence (AAI) is intended to shed light on the fact that AI only appears to work autonomously. In reality, human labor is required to create this magical appearance of technological autonomy. For this purpose, millions of micro tasks are distributed to workers via platforms such as Amazon Mechanical Turk. Their flexible ‘daily work’ impels one to think about the future of labor as such. Is a liberation from rigid structures under way, or are new forms of instrumentalization and control emerging? Felix Diefenhardt, Aslı Dinç, Gosia Jagiello, Holger Kral, Nelli Kambouri, Katrin Kämpf, Aude Launay, Darija Medic, Shintaro Miyazaki, Felix Nickel, Andreas Schneider, Catherine Sotirakou, Mira Wallis, and Jutta Weber looked for answers to this question. The resulting workshop projects are bundled under the title “The Hidden Human Labor Behind AI.” https://projekte.berlinergazette.de/workshops/2020/11/14/aai-human-labor-be… *CAPTCHA Factory* It has become a daily routine that users of ‘free web services’ have to identify themselves as human beings. You are tested as to whether you are not a bot by being asked to identify hardly legible words (e.g. “type the letters above”), blurred pictures (e.g. “select all squares with traffic lights”) or faces (e.g. “identify these people”). Such a “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart” (CAPTCHA) silently enables the outsourcing of tasks that AI cannot yet do (well enough). Jose Miguel Calatayud, Géraldine Delacroix, Monisha Caroline Martins, Julia Molin, Rebecca Puchta, Lira Ramadani, André Rebentisch, Sotiris Sideris, and Cagri Taskin responded to this practically uncontested regime of labor with a project entitled “I Swear, I am not a Robot!” and – in French translation – entitled “Plaidoyer pour des captchas éthiques.” https://projekte.berlinergazette.de/workshops/2020/11/15/captcha-past-prese… https://blogs.mediapart.fr/geraldine-delacroix/blog/181120/plaidoyer-pour-d… *Dull, Dangerous + Dirty* One hundred years ago, robots were supposed to take over jobs from humans that were considered dull, dangerous, and dirty. However, automation during the industrial revolution did not accomplish this promise; until the present day, humans are doing “inhuman labor” – either because machines require their assistance (even to the degree that humans become an integral part of a machine’s mechanism) or because humans are still cheaper and more efficient than costly and maintenance-intensive machines. How will this situation look twenty years from now? Sana Ahmad, Desmond Alugnoa, Sabrina Apitz, Miriam Arentz, Susanne Braun, Masha Burina, Kerstin Guhlemann, Friederike Habermann, hvale, Kevin Rittberger, Martina Staneva, and Dzina Zhuk responded to this question with a movie pitch, asking in return “What if Invisibilized Workers Reclaimed the Future?” https://projekte.berlinergazette.de/workshops/2020/11/14/what-if-invisibili… *Logistical Noir* AI-savvy companies are expanding their logistical networks into every corner of the world. Increasingly, they rely on their employees to become assistants of intelligent machines that keep immaterial and material products, goods, and resources moving – like workers at Amazon warehouses who are subjected to the instructions of self-learning algorithms. In this context, possible futures of work are negotiated through new forms of refusal to work (loosely based on the motto: I am not a robot!). Which labor struggles bring light into logistical noir? Jochen Becker, Niccolò Cuppini, Régine Debatty, Katharina Höne, Ela Kagel, Tanja Krone, Jacopo Ottaviani, Oliver Lerone Schultz, Juliane Rettschlag, Gabriele Schliwa, Nicolay Spesivtsev, and Mathana Stender looked for answers to this question. One of the resulting workshop projects is entitled “They Don’t Give You Tips Anymore.” https://projekte.berlinergazette.de/workshops/2020/11/17/logistical-noir-th… *Invisible Organization* Well-organized workers are the nightmare of capital because laborers are supposed to be docile not demanding, for the sake of frictionless production and circulation. This is why corporations and states have continuously been trying to suppress, combat or co-opt unions and similar kinds of worker organization. Today, capital’s desperate quest for frictionlessness is mirrored in self-learning algorithms that detect the word “union” in workers’ private communications. Is this reason enough to abandon the union model and resort to forms of invisible organization? Lara Luna Bartley, Mika Buljevic, Juan Caballero, Alina Floroi, Clara Gambaro, Max Haiven, Yonatan Miller, Barbara Orth, Zoran Pantelić, Marta Peirano, Jaron Rowan, Gustavo Sanroman, Brett Scott, and Laura Wadden looked for answers to this question. You can access the resulting workshop project by clicking on the title “Work, Care, and Invisible Organization.” https://projekte.berlinergazette.de/workshops/2020/11/16/invisible-organiza… Please spread the word widely about these projects! Fwd: Interrogating the Anthropocene: Truth and Fallacy (GTN Discussions)
by Michel Bauwens 02 Dec '20

02 Dec '20

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Great Transition Network <gtnetwork(a)greattransition.org> Date: Tue, Dec 1, 2020 at 11:02 PM Subject: Interrogating the Anthropocene: Truth and Fallacy (GTN Discussions) To: Great Transition Network <gtnmembers(a)greattransition.org> >From Paul Raskin [praskin(a)tellus.org] ---------------------------------------------------------- Dear GTN, The central question for our December discussion is: If we care about a Great Transition, how should we think about the Anthropocene? These big-picture perspectives emerged concurrently over the last two decades in response to the recognition of a state-shift underway in the global social-ecological system. But the two lenses offer quite different accounts of the roots, meaning, and implications of that shift. The point of departure of GT theory is the discontinuity in human history—the arrival of the Planetary Phase of Civilization. By contrast, the Anthropocene focuses on the discontinuity in planetary history—the arrival of a new geological era. Although these may seem like two sides of the same social-ecological coin, their differing attributions of cause and effect—and the differing understandings of human agency that emerge—deeply matter for how we understand and act to shape this pivotal moment. To kick off the discussion, I have prepared an opening essay " Interrogating the Anthropocene: Truth and Fallacy <https://greattransition.org/gti-forum/interrogating-anthropocene-raskin> ” (linked here and pdf attached). There I explore the resonances and dissonances of the Anthropocene idea with the project that concerns us: developing an adequate global praxis for nurturing a GT. In what ways do you agree with my perspective and in what ways not? How can we best embrace the Anthropocene’s ecological truths and challenge its social and political fallacies? What form does this debate take in your arena of scholarship or activism? I very much look forward to the discussion. Please keep your comments succinct (1,200 words tops) and sharply focused on the topic. The internal GTN discussion will go through Friday, January 8, 2021. Over to you, Paul Paul Raskin GTI Director ---------------------------------------------------------- To submit a comment for this GTN discussion, click reply or send it to jcohn(a)tellus.org. *Expect a delay between the submission and posting.* You can review the discussion here <https://greattransition.org/240-interrogating-the-anthropocene-truth-and-fa…>, where you can also submit your comment by replying to any previously posted comment. -- P2P Foundation: http://wiki.p2pfoundation.net <http://p2pfoundation.net> - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: ; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Curation of news on p2p/commons developments: https://www.facebook.com/groups/p2p.open/
