Dear Tord, Here is an 2013 article and links of three practical projects hope that gives a broader perspective: Another World, Now! Coming of the Transnational Revolutions and the Networked Prince: http://www.academia.edu/5179504/Another_World_Now_Coming_of_the_Transnation… This is [CoDe]Proletkult: http://www.networkedlabour.net/ - CoDe stands for cooperative and collaborative development of the self- co- learning platform in order to produce and expand de-proletarian culture of the classless society, as much as possible. And this is an counter 'operational research' unit to build and strengthen operational work for change: http://www.networkedlabour.net/ networkedlabour list is the currently most active aspect feeding in generative exchange. Finally the GNUnion as a global networked labour union: https://gnunion.wordpress.com/ it is designed as an organisational tool for those enslaved by global IT companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, gameing companies and call centers. so these are where and how I see Bogdanov's work and vision be more than helpful. best, Orsan On 28 July 2015 at 17:07, Tord Björk <tord.bjork(a)gmail.com> wrote: > Interesting perspectives both in terms of practical organizing of a > movement, proletkult, and theoretically. Bogdanov’s Organisational Science, the Commons and Sustainability by Fabian Tompsett
by Örsan Şenalp 27 Jul '15

27 Jul '15

This essay uses Bogdanov’s Tektology, or organisational science to compare three forms of organisation: Bourgeois corporation, the Soldier-peasant army and the Exemplary laboratory and their role as competing organisational forms offering market-based, command-based and commons-based approaches to social organisation. Bogdanov’s role as an educational innovator is compared with that of Gustavo Esteva, and both are linked to the exemplary-laboratory organisation as a way of combining learning with the commons. One outcome of Bogdanov’s approach which is featured is that of Vladimir Vernadsky, the Ukrainian bio-geochemist who discovered the role of man and other living creatures in the generation of CO 2 in the atmosphere. This reflects the strengths of Bogdanov’s Tektology as way of approaching sustainability, which at the same time fits with a commons-based innovative approach rooted in a dynamic around autonomy and mutuality. http://www.academia.edu/10149629/Bogdanov_s_Organisational_Science_the_Comm…

Erik Olin Wright on the role of the state
by Michel Bauwens 27 Jul '15

source: from an article he published in 2007 ("Compass Points"). strongly recommend you read this: ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Daniel Chavez <chavez(a)tni.org> Date: Sun, Jul 26, 2015 at 3:49 PM Subject: Re: [NetworkedLabour] Fwd: [WSF-Discuss] Gindin and Panitch (from Athens): A Real Plan B To: networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org On 26/07/15 08:17, Michel Bauwens wrote: > but the old question of the state has not been solved ... if you don't > take care of the state, will that stop the state from taking care of you ? > in other words, in highly unequal class societies, the state remains a > powerful player representing legitimate violence and the alternative in > most places without a state is still private class violence, not popular > power. > I fully agree with Michel's arguments. And coming back to the debate on socialism and the state proposed by Peter, these notes from our friend Erik Olin Wright might be useful. The language if certainly different (no mention to the commons and many references to civil society...), but it'd be interesting to see what are our real differences (if any) with this kind of approaches. Capitalism would be an unreproducible and chaotic social order if the state played the minimalist role specified in the libertarian fantasy, but it would also, as Polanyi argued, function much more erratically if civil society was absorbed into the economy as a fully commodified and atomized arena of social life. Pure communism is also a utopian fantasy, since it is hard to imagine a complex society without some sort of authoritative means of making and enforcing rules (a ‘state’). Feasible, sustainable forms of large-scale social organization, therefore, always involve some kind of reciprocal relations among these three forms of power. Today, few socialists believe that comprehensive statist central planning is a viable structure for realizing socialist goals. Nevertheless, statist socialism remains a component of any likely process of social empowerment. The state will remain central to the provision of a wide range of public goods, from health to education to public transportation, and in spite of the record of central planning in the command economies, it could also be the case that efficient and democratic forms of central planning over certain kinds of goods production may be viable at some point in the future, under altered historical conditions. The crucial question for socialists, then, is the extent to which these aspects of state provision can be placed under the effective control of a democratically empowered civil society. In capitalist societies, typically, public goods provision by the state is only weakly subordinated to social power through the institutions of representative democracy. Because of the enormous influence of capitalist economic power on state policies, often such public goods are more geared to the requirements of capital accumulation than social needs. Deepening the democratic quality of the state is thus the pivotal problem that will have to be solved in order for direct state provision of goods and services to become a genuine pathway to social empowerment. Many will be sceptical about the possibility of achieving this. The failure of command-and-control bureaucracies in both state-socialist and capitalist economies has fuelled calls for the privatization of state services, not for their democratization. Yet a range of innovative designs provide reason to believe that more energetically participatory forms are possible, especially at the local and regional level, and that these can enhance both the effectiveness of public goods provision and the accountability of democratic institutions. In Brazil, the system of participatory budgeting developed during the 1990s involved large numbers of ordinary citizens and secondary associations in real decision-making over city budgets, and especially over state production of local public goods. While it lasted, the participatory budget contributed to a significant redirection of infrastructure investment by the local state towards the needs of the poor and working class. Socialism is an economic structure within which the means of production are owned collectively by the entire society and thus the allocation and use of resources for different social purposes is accomplished through the exercise of what can be termed ‘social power’. Social power is rooted in the capacity to mobilize people for cooperative, voluntary collective actions of various sorts in civil society. This implies that civil society should not be viewed simply as an arena of activity, sociability and communication, but also of real power. Social power is contrasted to economic power, based on the ownership and control of economic resources, and state power, based on the control of rule-making and rule-enforcing capacity over a given territory. Democracy, in these terms, can be thought of as a specific way of linking social power and state power: in the ideal of democracy, state power is fully subordinated and accountable to social power. Democracy is thus, inherently, a deeply socialist principle. If ‘democracy’ is the label for the subordination of state power to social power, ‘socialism’ is the term for the subordination of economic power to social power. Thanks Paul for this intervention, some remarks inline, but first: Your proposals are very ambitious, perhaps too much so so early in the game ? This is why my own proposals are still more focused on getting an actual commons economics off the ground in civil society, so that the public sector can start paying attention! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Date: Mon, Jul 27, 2015 at 2:12 PM Subject: Re: Continuing to fill in the context I'll share my perspective on this, which may not be that of the others copied in, my first inclination today is that the focus needs to be on constructing commons, immaterial and material, everywhere we can, and to create vehicles so that this allows the creation of livelihoods and the self-reproduction of the commoners. While the struggle between labor and capital remains a reality as long as the current political economy dominates, I think personally that all struggles that focus on bringing more labor into subordinate working relations in view of redistribution, are no longer operative, and that we must focus on counter-economic networks, with decommodified cooperative labor co-constructing commons. This means, as first suggested by Pat Conaty on this list, to create a in-between between the commons and capital, i.e. to focus on cooperative accumulation. But that cooperative accumulation can no longer be merely a coop that competes on the capitalist marketplace, but a coop that co-produces commons, and works with non-capitalist capital in a non-capitalist market. This means concretely working on the creation of entrepreneurial coalitions that are co-dependent and organized around the commons that they are co-creating. Concretely, at the territorial level, this looks like what Stephanie Rearick is doing in Madison, https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/100-women-who-are-co-creating-the-p2p-societ…, or what Marion Rousseaux is trying to do in Lille with Encommuns.org https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/100-women-who-are-co-creating-the-p2p-societ…, i.e. create interlocking value chains for the cooperative commonwealth, at the local or the translocal level. At the more 'trans-national' level, this means a direct focus on the creation of phyles, i.e. ethical, 'generative' business networks that sustain a community and its commons. This means projects like lasindias.net, enspiral, ethos, and others. (marty, you'll find descriptions of all those in the p2pfoundation.net wiki, via the search box on the top right) On Sun, Jul 26, 2015 at 11:08 PM, Marty Heyman <marty.heyman(a)gmail.com> wrote: > Hi to the others on the list. > > My quibble, such as it is, is that Capital (Finance) pervades and largely > controls … especially “the conversation.” A program to reverse its > enclosures of the economic, political, and social spheres would appear to > need a core of equally committed and motivated strategists with the > resources to create a contrary “movement” to mobilize wealth, power, and > public sentiment.
