Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. Sorry.... marcos _______________________________________________ P2P Foundation - Mailing list http://www.p2pfoundation.net https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation

I just watched the following video about smartphones and their human cost. Warning, it's shocking. http://sharepowered.com/see-the-human-cost-of-your-iphone-and-it-will-shock… I wondered, how feasible is it to: - create a global professionally managed p2p brand (here: for smartphones, e.g. urphone.net) - fabricate "clean" (whatever is possible here) smart phones in regional fablabs or even hackerspaces under that brand - profits shared all over the brand I apologize for my impulsive post, it may be pure nonsense, but I wonder

Amazon Alternatives?
by Kevin Flanagan 06 Jun '14

Dear Friends, Can anyone suggest some alternative online book sellers to Amazon with preferably global delivery? We regularly post book reviews and even have an Amazon store embedded in the P2P blog. However considering Amazons poor labour practices we would prefer to support cooperative alternatives where possible. Thanks in advance for your suggestions Kevin

Fwd: [Solutions] New paper on 'Changes in the global value of ecosystem services'

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Robert Costanza <costanza(a)thesolutionsjournal.com> Date: Thu, May 29, 2014 at 9:37 AM Subject: [Solutions] New paper on 'Changes in the global value of ecosystem services' To: Solutions <solutions(a)mailman.anu.edu.au> Hi. I just wanted to alert you to our new paper titled "Changes in the global value of ecosystem services" in *Global Environmental Change.* This paper builds on our 1997 paper published in *Nature* on the global value of ecosystem services, and estimates the changes since then. It updates the unit value estimates based on work done by the TEEB (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity) study and combines them with new global land use estimates to arrive at the first estimates of the changes in global ecosystem services value between 1997 and 2011 in monetary units. We estimate (with appropriate caveats) that the loss of ecosystem services from 1997 to 2011 is on the order of $20 Trillion/yr. The paper also addresses some of the misconceptions and critiques arising from the 1997 paper and compares the results with more elaborate global systems modeling approaches. You can view and download the paper at: https://sites.google.com/a/idakub.com/www/CV/publications/2014_Costanza_Glo… or: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0959378014000685 If you have any trouble, let me know and we can send you a copy. Fwd: 88 Organizations and Individuals Oppose US Sanctions Against Venezuela

Academics Noam Chomsky and James Petras, leaders of the United Steelworkers and United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE), Former Attorney General Ramsey Clark, lawyer/author Eva Golinger, religious leaders Fr. Roy Bourgeois and Gerry Lee, and others signed the letter to Reid. The letter opposes sanctions, comparing it to the internationally condemned 55-year old sanctions against Cuba. The letter also calls for cutting off US Aid for International Development and National Endowment for Democracy funding for violent groups within the Venezuelan opposition which are responsible for more than half the deaths arising from violent demonstrations which began in February. Finally, the letter calls for the normalization of relations between the two countries, pointing out, “Venezuela holds the largest proven oil reserves in the world. As the largest consumer of oil, it is in the interest of the people of the United States to maintain friendly and regular relations with Venezuela.” The letter asks the Obama Administration to name an ambassador to Venezuela, a position that has been vacant since 2008. Venezuela’s democratically elected president Nicolas Maduro has named an ambassador to the United States who has been kept waiting for his credentials to be accepted by the State Department. ------------------------------ Open Letter to Sen. Harry Reid Opposing Sanctions Against Venezuela May 29, 2014 Sen. Harry Reid Majority Leader US Senate Washington, DC 20510 Dear Sen. Reid, We, the undersigned organizations and individuals strongly oppose bills in both Houses of Congress to impose sanctions on Venezuela during a time when the Venezuelan government and democratic forces in the opposition are in formal talks mediated by the Vatican and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR). We do not think that sanctions would in any way contribute to a peaceful resolution of the problems facing Venezuelans in this polarized environment. Sanctions against Venezuela would be all too reminiscent of the failed 55-year US policy of sanctions against Cuba. Each year in the UN General Assembly, the US policy toward Cuba is condemned by a nearly unanimous vote of the Community of Nations. At the beginning of his presidency, President Barack Obama promised Latin America a new chapter in US relations. Instead Latin America has witnessed the same old policies of interference in their sovereign affairs and a lack of respect for the right of self-determination. To now impose sanctions against Venezuela would further confirm the perception of the United States as a bad neighbor and a bully. We are also troubled that some groups in the violent opposition receive US funding through the US Agency for International Development and the National Endowment for Democracy. The violent opposition is responsible for more than half the 41 deaths since the beginning of street violence in February, including the decapitation of a motorcyclist from razor wire strung across a street. While the democratic opposition sits down at the table and talks to the democratically elected government of President Nicolas Maduro, the violent opposition attempts to win in the streets what they have failed to win in 16 elections since 1998 – elections that former President Jimmy Carter calls “the best in the world” in terms of transparency and fairness. We call on the Congress to stop funding violence in Venezuela. Venezuela holds the largest proven oil reserves in the world. As the largest consumer of oil, it is in the interest of the people of the United States to maintain friendly and regular relations with Venezuela. To that end we further call on the Administration to appoint, and the Senate to approve, an ambassador to Venezuela and to approve the seating of the ambassador President Maduro has named to represent his government to the United States. Just as peaceful dialogue is the only rational solution to Venezuela’s social divisions, normalized relations and peaceful dialogue, based on respect, is the only rational solution to the differences between our two nations. Thomas Piketty, Karl Marx and the Internet
by Christian Fuchs 29 May '14

29 May '14

Fuchs, Christian. 2014. Thomas Piketty’s Book “Capital in the Twenty-First Century”, Karl Marx and the Political Economy of the Internet. tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique 12 (1): 413-430. http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/article/view/575 Abstract Thomas Piketty’s book Capital in the Twenty-First Century has resulted in a sustained political and academic debate about capitalism in the 21st century. This article discusses the relevance of the book in the context of Karl Marx’s works and the political economy of the Internet. It identifies 3 common reactions to Piketty’s book: 1) dignification; 2) denigration of the work’s integrity; 3) the denial of any parallel to Marx. I argue that all three reactions do not help the task of creating a New Left that is urgently needed in the situation of sustained capitalist crisis. Marxists will certainly view Piketty’s analysis of capitalism and political suggestions critically. I argue that they should however not dismiss them, but like Marx and Engels aim to radicalise reform suggestions. In relation to the Internet, this paper discusses especially how insights from Piketty’s book can inform the discussion of tax avoidance by transnational Internet companies such as Google, Facebook and Amazon. For establishing an alternative, non-commercial, non-capitalist Internet one can draw insights about institutional reforms and progressive capital taxation from Piketty that can be radicalised in order to ground radical-reformist Internet politics. “The daily struggle for reforms, for the amelioration of the condition of the workers within the framework of the existing social order, and for democratic institutions, offers to the social democracy the only means of engaging in the proletarian class war and working in the direction of the final goal-the conquest of political power and the suppression of wage labor. Between social reforms and revolution there exists for the social democracy an indissoluble tie. The struggle for reforms is its means; the social revolution, its aim” (Rosa Luxemburg 1899, 41).

Fwd: FW: [aepf] statement on Thai Coup

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Francois Houtart <houtart(a)hotmail.com> Date: Wed, May 28, 2014 at 10:47 AM Subject: FW: [aepf] statement on Thai Coup ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 May 2014 15:45:10 +0200 From: pietje.vervest(a)tni.org To: aepf(a)lists.riseup.net Subject: [aepf] statement on Thai Coup Dear friends In light of the alarming events in Thailand, we have drafted the following statement after consulting with friends in the region. Please share this statement and help us get as many signatures as possible. If you would like to sign on as an organisation or individual, please contact hilde(a)tni.org<XXX(a)tni.org> by June 1, 2400 hrs. *Español mas abajo* *Stop the Thai Coup, Restore and Strengthen Democracy with Participation for All* After several months of political unrest in Thailand, the military declared martial law on May 20, 2014, and then called leaders in for a supposed attempt at dialogue before seizing power in a coup d’état on May 22. General Prayuth Chan-ocha abolished the 2007 Constitution and dissolved the caretaker Government and Senate. In subsequent days, the military has summoned and detained scholars, activists, journalists and politicians, even carrying out arbitrary arrests and secret detentions, targeting people who think differently and who have campaigned for democratic and legal reforms. The coup leaders imposed a curfew, censored the media, and gave military courts jurisdiction over all cases deemed threatening to national security. These acts are unjustified and strongly undermine the fundamental principles of human rights and democracy. We condemn the military coup and believe that the only way to solve political conflicts is through the genuine participation of people from all classes and beliefs. A lasting social peace can only be achieved if the marginalized sectors of society are taken into account and have a defining role in a fair process that strengthens real democracy and equal rights for all. Military seizure of power is a serious political setback and weakens democratic institutions, exacerbating instead of calming social tensions. This situation will only lead to more political violence. We believe that peace is impossible under military rule. Therefore, we call on the military to: 1. Immediately restore democracy and return sovereignty to the Thai people. 2. Unconditionally release all detainees regardless of their political affiliations and views. 3. Respect human rights and human dignity, and guarantee fundamental civil and political rights for all, in accordance with its international obligations, ceasing courts martial. 4. Respect the right of civilians to determine the direction of the country through democratic processes without any further military intervention. We also urge all political groups and movements to embrace peaceful and collaborative conflict resolution and compromise and to support the restoration of constitutional rule and governance in Thailand based on inclusive and participatory democratic principles and practices. -- *Please note an intrusion wiped out my inbox on February 8; I have no record of previous communication, proposals, etc ..* P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
