Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Or take the time and read some very old documented evidence available at a library near you= but you may need to stay there awhile on microfiche. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Janssen Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 4:39 PM To: P2P Foundation mailing list Subject: Re: [P2P-F] Fw: Info On Sun, Oct 23, 2011 at 10:32 AM, Natalie Golovin <10natalie(a)cox.net> wrote: > The European Tribes treated the Natives no worse than they treated each > other. Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. Sorry.... marcos _______________________________________________ P2P Foundation - Mailing list http://www.p2pfoundation.net https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation

a local value standard for money
by Michel Bauwens 31 Mar '16

31 Mar '16

an argument from shann turnbull ""I cannot see how money can become democratic unless its value is determined independently of the financial system just as standards of weights and measures are determined independently of those that use them as a common good." Local Standard of Value <http://p2pfoundation.net/Local_Standard_of_Value#mw-head> <http://p2pfoundation.net/Local_Standard_of_Value#p-search> Discussion[edit <http://p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Local_Standard_of_Value&action=edi…> ] Shann Turnbull: "I cannot see how money can become democratic unless its value is determined independently of the financial system just as standards of weights and measures are determined independently of those that use them as a common good. A local standard of value established in each bio-region would allow anyone in that region to enter intro contract to exchange goods and services with reference to the accepted standard. There would be no need for either a centralised or distributed ledger even if one was kept. Establishing the standard of value on a democratic basis becomes a governance problem not a financial one. Millions of producer and/or suppliers of benign renewable energy being shared through a cooperative creates a democratic governance arrangement that unlike LIBOR or foreign exchanges could have its value cross checked by millions of its stake holding suppliers/consumers. I would caution the call of requiring money to be created without debt unless you also specify "Bank" debt. If we are going to use money as a medium of exchange it will be creating private peer to peer debt! If you want democratic money then we cannot have money that creates money by earning interest. The ability of money to earn interest also misallocated resources to creating money rather than investing in real things that can increase prosperity on a sustainable basis without growth and even with de-growth." I hope of interest of people in this list, Mayo English - Català - Castellano Commons Collaborative Economies: Policies, Technologies and City for the People *An encounter which aims to highlight the relevance of the commons-oriented approach of peer production and collaborative economy, while proposing public policies and providing technical guidelines to build platforms for collaborative communities. * www.procomuns.net Contact: info(a)dimmons.net *WHEN & WHERE* During the weekend of March 12-13th, 2016, with a locally-oriented event taking place on Friday, March 11th, 2016. *Barcelona Activa <http://www.barcelonactiva.cat/> *(Carrer Llacuna, 162 -164, 08018 Barcelona) *GOALS* 1. Highlight the *relevance of the commons-oriented model within the collaborative economy*, and project internationally the relevance of commons – oriented production in Barcelona and Catalonia. 2. Build *policy recommendations for public administrations*, specifically to be sent to the Plan of Municipal Action (PAM) for the next 4 years of the Barcelona City Council, and the consultation process of the European Commission, on public policies of promotion and regulation of the collaborative economy and the model of city. 3. Provide *technical guidelines to build free and open software and decentralized technologies for collaborative communities.* *ORGANIZERS * The is organized by Barcelona Activa – Department of “Other Economies and proximity” with the BarCola – Node on collaborative economy and commons production in Barcelona (associated to the Social and Solidarian Economy Commission of the Barcelona City Council), and the P2Pvalue European project <http://www.p2pvalue.eu/> (locally by Dimmons <http://www.dimmons.net/>– Digital Commons Research at the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute of the Open University of Catalonia (Dimmons.net @ IN3-UOC) and the Institute of Govern and Public Policies of the Autonomous University of Barcelona ( IGOPnet.cc <http://igopnet.cc/> @ UAB). Organizers collaborators of the event are Guifi.net <https://guifi.net/>, Goteo <https://ca.goteo.org/>, Pangea <https://pangea.org/>, Free Knowledge Institute (with the Digital DIY project <http://www.didiy.eu/>), the Reutilitza.cat <https://www.reutilitza.cat/en> and eReuse.org <http://www.ereuse.org/en/> projects, Amical Viquipedia <https://www.wikimedia.cat/>, and OuiShare <http://ouishare.net/>, among others. *DEPARTING DIAGNOSTIC AND DIRECTION * In the last two decades we have seen the emergence of Internet-enabled collaborative communities building shared and common resources. *Commons-based Peer Production is rapidly growing*, not just for the disruptive and very successful cases of software (with free and open software) and encyclopedias (Wikipedia) but also for information (OpenStreetMap, Wikihow), hardware (FabLabs, Open Source Ecology), accommodation (Couchsurfing) and currency (local coins). More recently, we have also seen the *emergence and growth of hybrid models which retain some similar organizational logic, such as being based on collaborative principles, but privatizing others*. This is the case in corporate-based peer production such as Uber or Airbnb. Are they truly collaborative economies?. This issue opens up a series of debates and opportunities about how to *retain the commons and socially transformative dimension in the collaborative economy through the recognition of the distinctive values of these modes of production*, beyond value approaches which focus on monetization, and new forms of open/peer/platform cooperativism. However, public debate mainly focuses on the controversies around large corporations entering the collaborative economy. Thus, the public is mostly aware of peer production through these few large corporations. There is a *growing need to organize and raise the visibility of the commons and socially-oriented model*, and to address which are the conditions that should be present in order to characterise an economy or enterprise as “collaborative”. Additionally, recent technological developments, such as emergent blockchain technologies, have opened up new avenues of commons production, *management and distribution through more decentralized governance structures*, which also open up very promising avenues for the evolution of the collaborative economy. The more important commons-based peer production becomes, the more that controversies emerge, attracting the interest of public administrations. Still, it remains largely unclear *what the role of public administrations might be, which Public-Commons partnerships could be established, and what policy approach could be the most productive and beneficial*. The event main goal is to highlight the *relevance of the commons-oriented model within the collaborative economy*, and build policy and technical resources to promote its scalability. The encounter will *mix plenaries with unconference / open space working groups* to achieve the targeted outcomes. Participants will have the chance to suggest other activities. *Antecedents * The event will follow up on the previous workshop FLOSS4P2P <http://www.p2pvalue.eu/floss4p2p-workshop-agenda>, organized by the P2Pvalue <http://www.p2pvalue.eu/> european project, this time expanding the focus to policy. It will provide an opportunity for policy people to interact with the technical teams of Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) platforms for commons-based peer production communities, and to get a “deep dive” into how to promote the commons approach to collaborative economy from institutions. *TOPICS* *Policy* - Good experiences and policy recommendations for commons-oriented peer production and collaborative economy - Cities and commons - Value and commons-oriented peer production and collaborative economy *Areas of collaborative economy* - Open knowledge - Industrial Commons and open design - Digital DIY - Internet of Things - Open Source Hardware - Peer cooperativism - Feministing collaborative economy - Circular Economy *Tech* - Decentralized technologies and blockchain - Free and Open Source Software (FLOSS) platforms for communities in the collaborative economy - FLOSS proposals for boosting commons communities participation, growth and resilience (e.g. architectures, reward models) - Methodologies to integrate stakeholders in the development of platforms for communities (design thinking, agile, lean) - FLOSS alternatives to “walled gardens” (in communication or collaboration), especially if decentralized ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: CATALÀ Economies Col·laboratives Procomuns: Polítiques, Tecnologies i Ciutat per a les Persones *Economies Col·laboratives Procomuns és una trobada que pretén posar de manifest la rellevància del model procomú de l’economia col·laborativa, proposar el co-disseny de polítiques públiques de promoció d’aquest model i avançar propostes tècniques per a la construcció de plataformes col·laboratives*. www.procomuns.net Contacte: info(a)dimmons.net *QUAN I ON* 11, 12 i 13 de març de 2016 *Barcelona Activa <http://www.barcelonactiva.cat/>* (Carrer Llacuna, 162-164, 08018 Barcelona) *OBJECTIUS* 1. Ressaltar la* rellevància del model procomú* dins l’economia col·laborativa, i projectar internacionalment la importància de la producció orientada al procomú a Barcelona i Catalunya. 2. *DIAGNOSTIC I DIRECCIO* Les últimes dues dècades hem comprovat com gràcies a Internet sorgien comunitats col·laboratives i noves possibilitats d’utilitzar recursos comuns. The IsoGrid: Scalable Mesh Networking for a Better World
by Travis Martin 29 Feb '16

29 Feb '16

The IsoGrid: Scalable Mesh Networking for a Better World Version 0.215 Abstract The TCP/IP Internet has: • High and Unbounded Latency • Wasteful, Underused Links • Limited Node/Switch/Hop Counts (no IoT support) • Low Redundancy • A Tendency to Centralize Power • Choke-point Surveillance and Censorship • Disaster Vulnerabilities • Tragedy of the Commons What follows is a free and open proposal for a solution: A new globally-scalable network protocol with a mesh topology. Instead of being limited to traditional address-routed packets, the protocol uses source routing to set up bounded-latency isochronous streams avoiding the problem of congestive collapse. Once a stream is set up, the route is given a numeric name to support routing micro-packets (µPkt) both directions along the route. In order to support isochronous streams across the entire network, the framerate of every links is a power of 2 frequency relative to TCG time, this opens the door to many new scenarios that require precise relative timekeeping. Micro-payments in arbitrary settlement instruments, which are made ‘by simple agreement’ between each neighbor along a route, are used to pay for sending data across the network, avoiding the Tragedy of the Commons. Client endpoints are responsible for building up multi-path redundant link maps through the network, relying on the advertised 3D-Geohash locations of the nodes to track only a subset of nodes within a given area; providing scalability, redundancy, and wider distribution of power. Contrasted with TCP/IP, the new protocol stack’s layering model provides additional options for streams, packets, safety, reliability, robustness, latency, and extensibility. Most importantly, the entire protocol was morally designed with its socioeconomic side-effects as a guide. IsoGrid_Protocol_Specification_v0_215 [pdf] Thanks! -=Travis.Martin

research assistance request

it would be great if anyone had the time to do some research on the governance issues with the Bitcoin and Wikimedia Foundations, Wikimedia Foundation has been experiencing a spate of senior staff resignations, and there has been a great deal of uncertainty over the ambitions relating to the "Knowledge Engine" proposal that emerged under the current ED, Lila Tretikov. The following timeline with references to a variety of online discussions is pretty damning of the current climate for staff. http://mollywhite.net/wikimedia-timeline/ "The Wikimedia Foundation has recently suffered from lack of communication with the editing community, poor transparency, and sudden loss of staff members. Some of these issues center around the recent Wikimedia Discovery efforts, some seem to stem from senior leadership. Unrest and discontent has been visible both within the editing community and the Wikimedia Foundation itself." -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Website readability
by Karl Robillard 17 Feb '16

17 Feb '16

The new design for blog.p2pfoundation.net is much less readable than the previous one. It's following the current trends towards an illiterate web that include features like: 1. Over sized text; less text density. 2. Low contrast text/background colors. 3. Heavy on irrelevant images. 4. Morphing layout & irrelevant animation. I visit blogs to read information, not play video games, so this web-wide trend really gets my goat. For blog.p2pfoundation.net specifically: 1. Text seems to be sized only for high DPI screens. 2. The grid layout is annoying as stories jump around in a seemingly random way as the page is resized. 3. The date & comment count are colored #bbbbbb, making them difficult to see on the white background. 4. The story tag text is overlayed on images making them difficult to read. 5. The story right side-bar headings are colored #cccccc, making them difficult to see on the white background. CSS has a resolution media feature that could be used to size fonts. Ideally there would be a preference cookie (no login required) that would allow users to: 1. Make all text black against white. 2. Turn off irrelevant images. 3. Show stories in a single column (as per the previous layout). -Karl

In Italy and even in the anti-capitalist environments, like for the example the Centri Sociali, the reality of Cooperativas Integrales (CI) is not well known. Can you introduce synthetically the today reality of CI, especially in Catalonia, in order to inform us? An Integral Cooperative is a tool to create a grassroots counterpower departing from self- management, self-organization and direct democracy, and one that would help overcome the actual state of dependency on the structures of the system, towards a scenario of liberty full awareness, free of authority, and in which everyone could flourish under equal conditions and opportunities. Catalan integral Cooperative was created in 2010 and currently have around 600 productive projects, around 30 social centers and 5000 people involved. 2. Do you guess that there is a link between the CI development in Spain and the DRY/ Indignados/ Occupy 2011 big movement that had a stronghold in Spain ? Why in your opinion in other south Europe countries, like Italy, that suffer of the big recession and austerity imposed by the financialized capitalist governance, such experimentations are not so developed? CIC was created a year before than the indignados movement, so we was being part active there, and the growing of the movement was helping to create new integral cooperatives in other territories of Spain, and also in France 3. Which kind of relationship exist between CIC (and other CI in Spain) and the Podemos party? There are not relationship. The reformist trend and the autonomous trend in the 15m movement was going every time more separated and the political visions of change are very different. It’s important to remember than Integral revolution principles are opposite to the parliamentarian system and are for go beyond states. Otherwise I know personally some of them because we was comrades in grassroots social movements, not only 15M but also far before the antiglobalization movement.
