Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. We, the undersigned organizations, express our full support for the International Monsanto Tribunal in The Hague scheduled on 14-16 October 2016. We salute and support the tribunal’s steering committee and organizing committee in this most important effort. We view this tribunal as a culmination of the efforts of the farmers, fisherfolks, small food producers, and peoples of the world in exposing and opposing the devil that is Monsanto. Monsanto, the giant US-based biotechnology corporation, has through the decades committed grave crimes against the farmers, fisherfolks, small food producers, and peoples of the world by producing highly-toxic products and promoting a profit-crazed and highly-destructive agro-industrial model. It is the face of monopoly-capitalist corporations that have been advancing a corporate takeover of the food chain and depriving various countries of food sovereignty. It has been denying peoples and their communities of the power to assert and realize the fundamental right to food and to produce food. Monsanto has contributed to the worsening hunger, poverty, exploitation and debt peonage among small farmers, fisherfolks, food producers. It has contributed to attacks on the right to food of the said groups and of all peoples of the world. It in no small measure has contributed to the destruction of the environment and the deterioration of the health of numerous persons. It is in the interest of the farmers and peoples of the world that Monsanto’s grave crimes will be consolidated and amplified through the tribunal. We are calling on all grassroots groups of small food producers, especially farmer organizations and their support NGOs, to speak out on the impacts of Monsanto in their communities and countries. Let us educate our ranks and the public on these through various forms of forums and symposiums. Let us hold different forms of action condemning Monsanto and its crimes. Onward to the International Monsanto Tribunal! ========================= *Estimados miembros y amigos PCFS , ¡Saludos! Digital democracy
by Anna Harris 31 Aug '16

31 Aug '16

Letter in reply to http://realdemocracymovement.org/the-power-and-the-potential-of-the-social-… Gerry Gold| 30th August 2016 at 10:20 amLog in to Reply Today, Jeremy Corbyn launched his digital democracy manifesto. It will not only democratise the internet but use digital technologies to revolutionise the process of democracy. Here’s a summary of the Digital Democracy manifesto : Universal Service Network – We will deliver high speed broadband and mobile connectivity for every household, company and organisation in Britain from the inner city neighbourhoods to the remotest rural community. Open Knowledge Library – We will create a free-to-use on-line hub of learning resources for the National Education Service. Platform Cooperatives – We will foster the cooperative ownership of digital platforms for distributing labour and selling services. The National Investment Bank and regional banks will help to finance social enterprises whose websites and apps are designed to minimise the costs of connecting producers with consumers in the transport, accommodation, cultural, catering and other important sectors of the British economy. Digital Citizen Passport – We will develop a voluntary scheme that provides British citizens with a secure and portable identity for their on-line activities. The Digital Citizen Passport will be used when interacting with public services like health, welfare, education and housing. Programming For Everyone – We will require that all publicly funded software and hardware is released under an Open Source licence. A People’s Charter of Digital Liberty Rights – We will launch a public consultation with people and parties across the political spectrum to draw up a digital bill of rights. Massive Multi-Person On-line Deliberation – We will utilise information technologies to make popular participation in the democratic process easy and inclusive. We will aim to organise both online and offline meetings for individuals and communities to deliberate about pressing political issues and participate in devising new legislation. All in all this is an exciting set of proposals. But there’s plenty missing. Most of all the party under Corbyn’s leadership needs to develop a bold new system of social ownership for the entire digital infrastructure. What’s urgently needed is a not-for-profit replacement for the insane global competition that seeks to exploit the networks and storage in the Cloud, and uses all of our individual identities as commodities for sale, targets for advertising by the highest bidder. Let’s look further to co-operative ownership for all of the global networks – not just the information service providers, but extending its reach to financial services including banking. That will require a Corbyn-led government to work with other similar-minded governments throughout the world to implement a new form of co-operative globalisation – not to coexist with but to replace the domination of the global economy by rapacious transnational corporations and vulture funds.

The social movement behind Corbyn
by Anna Harris 29 Aug '16

29 Aug '16

http://realdemocracymovement.org/the-power-and-the-potential-of-the-social-… 'The cause of this lies deeper still, in the subjugation of democracy by the corporations and the financial institutions. Sovereignty lies not with Parliament but with extra-parliamentary forces that dictate to nation states and their institutions. This is the essence of the crisis of democracy which is ultimately pushing the Corbyn phenomena. So it’s heartening that in a statement as voting began, Corbyn pledged to ‘extend democracy across Britain’, including a commitment to a ‘radical overhaul of the constitution’. He said: “We will support radical devolution of power to local councils, regions and nations, in consultation with party members and local people; replace the House of Lords with an elected second chamber; end the ‘revolving door’ corporate grip on politics and the civil service; and create a new role for citizens’ assemblies in shaping political accountability for the future. “We will give people a real say in their local communities, through democratic participation in budgeting, online democracy and control of local services; full transparency in public decision-making and contracts with private companies; and a citizens’ right to challenge the outsourcing and privatisation of local services through referendums.”'

It was clear from the many discussions and initiatives present that ‘There are Plenty of Alternatives’ to capitalism and neoliberalism. Following the convergence activists convened at the WSF Agora on Sat 13th of August and came to agreement to work together on common goals and actions.1) To transition to a post-capitalist society and challenge capitalism on local, regional, national and international levels by building political power, through participatory democracy, local assemblies and economic democracy. 2) To support and extend trans-national networks of solidarity. 3) To share knowledge and experiences of transition initiatives, in all their diversity, through both networking and popular education. 4) To develop policies and practices to support inclusive initiatives that respect women, gender diversity, ethnic, religious and cultural diversity. 5) To support the creation and issue of alternative and community currencies. 6) To move away from societies based on mass consumption towards societies where resources are cared for, upcycled, recycled and shared. This also requires political action and transformation to move beyond economics based on extractivism. 7) To use non-corporate communications tools (Dégooglisation). To Support Independent media and control of communications infrastructure that respect and protect the privacy and free expression of activists based on Free Libre Open Source Software. 8) To get the influence of big money out of politics. 9) At a fringe meeting in the context of the World Social Forum 2016’s Commons Space, members of Transformap, RIPESS and Greenmap decided to convene for Mapping the Alternatives during a Winter Camp late 2016, early 2017. With no more than 15 participants – contributors to different movements, programmers and common users among them – this Winter Camp in the form of a Deep Dive shall allow for an in-depth analysis of the existing challenges to a distributed, semantic mapping process. This will help distill collective steps to meet the shared vision. The concrete aim is to prepare an international mapping happening at a site where caring oikonomies are alive. This event is mainly conceived as a productive open space. It combines various local mapping activities in multiple workshop formats and takes place during 2017. 10) To build a shared political agenda for the advocacy of Commons. To develop Commons Charters for the defence and creation of Commons. Taking inspiration from initiatives such as the Bologna Regulation of the Urban Commons and the Barcelona Procomun declaration. As a first action in this direction the following call from WSF participants to GSEF participants (Global Social Economy Forum) to adopt Urban Commons Charters – >From participants to the WSF who met in Montreal (August 9th-10th 2016) to the municipal elected officials and actors of the SSE gathering/convening at the GSEF in Montreal (September 7th to 9th 2016). Proposed by the Commons Space, the Post-capitalist Transition Convergence Assembly, which included many thematic spaces of the WSF (Emancipation, Degrowth , Environment, SSE, Open Technology), invites the GSEF to study and recommend that cities adopt an Urban Commons Charter. The crafting of these charters should be based on the principles of participation and co-creation by all the citizens. These charters should give an institutional, economic and juridical framework for the emergence, self-organisation and sustainability of civic commons initiatives in cities. They also should stay open to contribution by citizens and be part of a proactive participatory decision-making process in all aspects of city life. GSEF participants can refer to the Charters developed in many European countries, like Italy (97 cities with commons charters), France and its annual festival ‘Cities in Commons’ or Spain, where the city of Barcelona contributed recently, with civil society actors, to the development of a policy framework based on the social and political principles of the Commons. There is common ground with other initiatives that were presented at the Agora and we hope we can work together on those points. For further information, Future French language translation, contacts and follow up please see the following pad for details – https://commonsspace.hackpad.com/Initiatives-of-the-Converge nce-for-Post-Capitalist-Transition-V6Oc6IeAM7M We invite all organisations who participated in the convergence and support the initiatives to add their names to the document. Fwd: [NetworkedLabour] Special Issue Call: Ferments in the Field: The Past, Present and Futures of Communication Studies (Journal of Communication)

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Christian Fuchs <christian.fuchs(a)uti.at> Date: Thu, Aug 25, 2016 at 6:10 PM Subject: [NetworkedLabour] Special Issue Call: Ferments in the Field: The Past, Present and Futures of Communication Studies (Journal of Communication) To: "networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org >> < networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org>" <networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org> Special Issue of the Journal of Communication: Ferments in the Field: The Past, Present and Futures of Communication Studies Editors: Christian Fuchs & Jack Qiu Call for submission of extended abstracts http://fuchs.uti.at/1699/ http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1111/(ISSN)1460- 2466/homepage/call_for_papers__ferments_in_the_field.htm In 1983, Journal of Communication (JoC) published the special issue “Ferment in the Field” (Volume 33, Issue 3, co-edited by George Gerbner and Marsha Siefert). The issue focused on “questions about the role of communications scholars and researchers, and of the discipline as a whole, in society” (Gerbner & Siefert, 1983, p. 4). The 35 contributions reflected “on the state of communications research today; the relationship of the researcher to science, society, and policy; the goals of research with respect to social issues and social structure; and the tactics and strategies for reaching their goals” (ibid). In 1993, two comparable JoC issues were dedicated to “The Disciplinary Status of Communication Research” (Volume 43, Issues 3-4, co-edited by Mark Levy and Michael Gurevitch). In 2008, a JoC special issue discussed “Epistemological and Disciplinary Intersections” (Volume 58, Issue 4, edited by Michael Pfau). More than three decades after the original Ferment issue, it is again time to reflect on disciplinary transformations in communication studies. By calling this new special issue Ferments in the Field, we see historical continuity in our efforts along JoC’s tradition of inviting communication scholarship to reflect upon itself. Meanwhile, we ask questions with a special eye on the increasing complexity and diversity of the field: * What does the field of communication research look like? * What have been the key tendencies and developments in communication(s) research and its subfields? * How has the field developed in the past decades? What have been long-term continuities and discontinuities since the 1980s? * What is the actual and desirable role for communication studies in contemporary academe and society? * What is the status of theory, methods, critique, ethics, and interdisciplinarity in our field? * What is the status of critical research and theories? * How should the field position itself vis-à-vis key contemporary processes and challenges? * What does the future of communication studies look like? Contributions to a new edition of “Ferments in the Field” should be provocative essays that offer bold ideas with broad implications for the field as a whole and areas of specializations. This special issue speaks of ferments in the plural in order to spur reflections beyond established academic boundaries and stimulate discussions that encourage scholars to think beyond comfort zones. From multiple theoretical, methodological, and disciplinary perspectives, it asks about the continuities and discontinuities in communication research in an attempt to initiate a new round of debates about the past, present and futures of the field. The special issue will be published in 2018. The editors are Professor Christian Fuchs (University of Westminster) and Professor Jack Qiu (Chinese University of Hong Kong). Authors are welcome to submit extended abstracts to the Editors by December 1, 2016. Extended abstracts should have a length of 400-1,000 words (excluding tables, figures, and references). Abstracts should be submitted to c.fuchs(a)westminster.ac.uk and jacklqiu(a)cuhk.edu.hk. For doing so, please complete use the submission form available here: http://fuchs.uti.at/wp-content/Ferments.docx Subsequently, authors who were asked to submit complete papers will need to submit their manuscripts by May 2, 2017. Each manuscript should not exceed 4,000 words (including tables, figures, and references). _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Saw this and thought it relevant to some of the discussions I attended and participated in. Cheers, Becky, McGill ---------------------- Ours to Hack and to Own *THE RISE OF PLATFORM COOPERATIVISM, A NEW VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF WORK AND A FAIRER INTERNET* *http://tinyurl.com/zrgdosd <http://tinyurl.com/zrgdosd>* Edited by TREBOR SCHOLZ <http://www.orbooks.com/trebor-scholz/> and NATHAN SCHNEIDER <http://www.orbooks.com/nathan-schneider/> Real democracy and the Internet are not mutually exclusive. Here, for the first time in one volume, are some of the most cogent thinkers and doers on the subject of the cooptation of the Internet, and how we can resist and reverse the process. The activists who have put together *Ours to Hack and to Own* argue for a new kind of online economy: platform cooperativism, which combines the rich heritage of cooperatives with the promise of 21st-century technologies, free from monopoly, exploitation, and surveillance. The on-demand economy is reversing the rights and protections workers fought for centuries to win. Ordinary Internet users, meanwhile, retain little control over their personal data. While promising to be the great equalizers, online platforms have often exacerbated social inequalities. Can the Internet be owned and governed differently? What if Uber drivers set up their own platform, or if a city’s residents controlled their own version of Airbnb? This book shows that another kind of Internet is possible—and that, in a new generation of online platforms, it is already taking shape.
