Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Or take the time and read some very old documented evidence available at a library near you= but you may need to stay there awhile on microfiche. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Janssen Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 4:39 PM To: P2P Foundation mailing list Subject: Re: [P2P-F] Fw: Info On Sun, Oct 23, 2011 at 10:32 AM, Natalie Golovin <10natalie(a)cox.net> wrote: > The European Tribes treated the Natives no worse than they treated each > other. Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Announcements of the Free Knowledge Institute < fki-announce(a)freeknowledge.eu> Date: Thu, Sep 5, 2013 at 1:59 PM Subject: FKI Board strengthened with two new members To: fki-announce(a)freeknowledge.eu Permanent URL: http://freeknowledge.eu/announce_1309 FKI Board strengthened with two new members The Free Knowledge Institute is proud to welcome two new members to its Board: Joe Corneli and Marco Fioretti. Both have been active community members within the free knowledge - free technology community. Both bring in new energy, large networks, ideas and initiatives that are expected to strengthen the Free Knowledge community. Joe Corneli is finalising his PhD at the Open University UK on the topic of "Peer Produced Peer Learning", which he calls "paragogy" for short. The main case study in his thesis deals with rebuilding the free/open mathematics reference website, PlanetMath.org as a mathematics learning environment. These ideas have informed his involvement with FKI and are built upon within the Peeragogy project. Joe is working on new designs for funding work at the Free Knowledge Institute. Early discussions are developing into plans for a Free Knowledge Incubator: stay tuned. Marco Fioretti is an Italian long time activist, freelance writer and trainer of open standards, Free Software, digital technologies and the their relation and impact on education, ethics, civil rights and environmental issues. Marco has been one of the tutors within the Free Technology Academy and will continue to do so. His first commitment as Board member is to lead the reform of the FTA course programme. Marco: "We already have several educational methodologies, from peer learning to master level courses, and we already started to discuss other course ideas to propose in the near future. Besides participating to the definition of those new course types, my first task in the FKI will be to define the course calendar for the 2013 Fall/Winter period, and to communicate it to the widest possible community." Their track record shows a strong commitment to free knowledge and the values shared at the Free Knowledge Institute. The founding Board members of the foundation - Hinde ten Berge, David Jacovkis and Wouter Tebbens - remain active in the FKI Board. The expansion of the Board is an outcome of the Strategy process started in 2012. ### About the FKI The Free Knowledge Institute (FKI) promotes free knowledge in all its forms. Its mission is to empower people in the fields of free knowledge and free technology to help them become effective participants of a free knowledge society. The FKI is a hub connecting networks and communities in multiple domains facilitating and enabling the study, sharing and collaborative development of free knowledge and free technologies. The aim is to provide equal access to production and sharing of knowledge. We work towards this aim together with local and global actors. One of the core activities of the FKI is the Free Technology Academy, an online study programme and virtual campus based in free knowledge, free technology and different educational models, ranging from p2p learning to master level courses. ### About Marco Fioretti Marco is a freelance writer, popularizer, activist and teacher specialised in open digital standards, Free Software, digital technologies and their impacts on education, ethics, civil rights, environmental issues and, in general, everyday life. His slogan is "your civil rights and the quality of your life depend on how software is used AROUND you". Marco has been using Free Software daily for all his activities since the mid 90's, when he was an ASIC and FPGA designer. Full bio and main publications: http://mfioretti.com ### About Joe Corneli Joseph Corneli is a Ph. D. student at the Knowledge Media Institute of The Open University, UK, where he does research on how people learn mathematics. He is also a member of the board of directors of the US-based nonprofit, PlanetMath.org. link to full bio: http://wiki.planetmath.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl/Joseph_A._Corneli ### Further References * About the Free Knowledge Institute: http://freeknowledge.eu/about * Free Technology Academy: http://ftacademy.org/ * PlanetMath: http://planetmath.org * The Peeragogy project: http://peeragogy.org _______________________________________________ FKI-announce mailing list http://mail.freeknowledge.eu/mailman/listinfo/fki-announce To unsubscribe send a message to: fki-announce-leave(a)freeknowledge.eu For more info: http://freeknowledge.eu -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Speaking during the C2SV conference on Saturday, McAfee detailed plans for a new device capable of creating small peer-to-peer networks with encryption to block NSA surveillance, reports San Jose Mercury News<http://www.mercurynews.com/bay-area-news/ci_24198989/john-mcafee-reveals-de…> (via The Verge<http://www.theverge.com/2013/9/30/4786008/john-mcafee-d-central-device-avoi…> ). The small, round device--called D-Central--will supposedly cost less than $100. The current design will create a private network of about three city blocks in range, capable of moving around and allowing access to permitted iPhones, Android phones, and other devices while thwarting government agencies from accessing the data. "There will be no way [for the government] to tell who you are or where you are," said McAfee. Last year, McAfee was involved in a well-publicized manhunt, as Belizean officials attempted to extradite him from Guatemala in order to question him over the murder of his neighbor. After allegedly faking a heart attack, McAfee was eventually deported to the United States. During Saturday's presentation, the millionaire and founder of the anti-virus software which bears his name acknowledged D-Central could be used for criminal activity. "It will of course be used for nefarious purposes, just like the telephone is," said McAfee. A countdown clock has started on the D-Central page<http://www.futuretensecentral.com/>, with an apparent launch date 174 days out. http://www.futuretensecentral.com/ -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Global Survival" group. This international and public event will bring together representatives of contemporary practices, where research and applied innovation, culture and science, creativity and entrepreneurship meet. > > All conference speakers will examine and determine the so called 'open production', in terms of economic, legal, technological, as well as artistic aspects. Economic models of open design, spaces of collaborative artistic production, policies for the reinforcement of new structures for creative production, audiovisual projects focused on the limits of openness, individual experiences of new entrepreneurs regarding the sustainability of innovative business models, will comprise the rich tapestry of this conference, the purpose of which is to highlight, especially in the context of the current economic circumstances, the significance of interconnection of cultural production and the spaces that produce knowledge with the creative industries. > > There will be specific reference to the use of open and collaborative technologies, particularly regarding the field of three-dimensional printing and open fabrication, since they are considered to be the pioneers of the development and application of economically and socially sustainable models of production. > > Furthermore, in collaboration with the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, a significant number of young Greek artists - representatives of the "open artistic production" will present their new works, to be included in the next exhibition of the EMST, beginning on October 24, 2013. Typical example constitutes the installation AKTINA by the artistic teams City_Index and Energize, an expression of the virtuous cycle of reuse of energy that, placed in the courtyard of the National Hellenic Research Foundation premises, will collect solar energy in order for the 3D printers to be charged, which in turn will be used in order for three-dimensional open designs to be produced during the conference. > > The conference is part of the "Creativity: Innovative Models of Production and Access" (CIMPA) project funded via the Culture Programme (2007-2013) by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), responsible for the management of certain parts of the EU's programmes in the fields of education, culture and audiovisual, operating under the Education and Culture DG. > > > > . . . > > Lydia > > http://realdemocracygr.wordpress.com/ > > @realdemgr > > @mindthecam

Well, it seems that even as polarization is increasing it is starting to dissolve into a more productive reality. Those still firmly embedded in the polarized worldview can't quite grasp this. In a blog post entitled "The Perennially 'Unusual' Yet Somehow Ubiquitous Left-Right Alliance: Towards Acknowledging an Anti-Establishment Center"<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-f6c6d7b469b7836f00d4acf869d83b5…>Sam Husseini chronicles an alignment that shows up over and over between some Left and Right camps on certain issues. He notes that this perennial alignment is almost always viewed as "strange" by mainstream media and pundits. "Every time you have this convergence of progressives and conservatives against the establishment," he writes, "it's regarded as 'unusual' 'odd' or 'bizarre' -- even though it keeps coming up on issue after issue: war, military spending, trade, corporate power, Wall Street, fossil fuel subsidies, as well as -- in the case of the NSA spying on the citizenry -- the central issue of Constitutional rights and civil liberties." Husseini goes on to quote dozens of news stories from the last 30 years - all of which describe each new example of this perennial phenomena in the same startled language as if it had never occurred before. We see this today as the most vibrant current ad hoc Left-Right alliance protests NSA surveillance.<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-e401ea7634dcd63602a05e75e43f8de…> This seemingly sporadic partnership is not only old news but has an ongoing under-the-radar coherence that in the last decade has taken somewhat permanent form as the "transpartisan" movement. Unfortunately, most of the people in the "odd" alignment described by Husseini - and Husseini himself - are not aware of this articulate movement that embodies their energy and ideals, but I can assure you that it is very much alive. SOME TRANSPARTISAN ACTORS, ACTIONS, AND IDEAS The visionary narrative of transpartisanship is that Left and Right can not only talk together, but also work together on many issues. Beyond that, enlightened transpartisans have found that they are in a unique position to articulate common-sense solutions that more than 80% of the rest of society would agree with. This has been a very rapidly evolving movement, with various groups and actors moving front and center and others moving to the periphery. I think the most active current group is probably the Transpartisan Center<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-5f4ad5633abf37ed000a6121f545cfa…>which has developed an intriguing track record of building relationships across the political spectrum and hosting issue-based retreats, conferences and salons. Noteworthy among their efforts are collaborations with 84 groups from across the political spectrum to form the Liberty Coalition<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-388dd0a0f42edfc537a439a3bb942f2…>to promote civil liberty and basic human rights (including privacy) and with about 60 diverse groups to create the Campaign for A New Policy with Iran<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-d8efec493f8db2be09b0a95e25e6bbb…> . Another intriguing transpartisan initiative is Living Room Conversations between liberal and conservative ordinary citizens. Some of these dialogues have been covered by mainstream media<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-d69a6245769da8f3358c26cdac4a784…>. Living Room Conversations are a down-home version of dialogues among liberal and conservative leaders that for almost a decade have been piloted with surprising success - at least during the conversations. Once back in the partisan battleground many partisan leaders have a hard time maintaining their new transpartisan center of gravity. (To me this shows the need for transpartisan support networks and changes in the larger systems and cultures in which we are all embedded.) Ordinary liberals and conservatives are not always under the same intense pressure to be positional. I participated in one of the first major transpartisan dialogues in 2004. It changed my political life, as I reported in my article "A Personally Transformational Encounter of Left and Right"<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-189cec546a04c21a31bf359d908f6c4…>(which became one of the most popular articles on the co-intelligence website!). My big takeaway: I realized that my progressive worldview - no more or less than the conservative worldview - was a mental and emotional trap woven out of gross oversimplifications, which not only prevented me from seeing a bigger picture but also kept me from recognizing people who would join me in working for changes I really believe in. One of the early thinkers and actors in the transpartisan movement was Lawrence Chickering, a former colleague of William F. Buckley at *The National Review* who currently promotes<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-7b3d83fd43a627a0ae2501e3df06d11…>girls education and empowers traditional communities around the world, especially in India. His 1993 book *Beyond Left and Right: Breaking the Political Stalemate*<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-f7923e9eaad9bb72ec8ad005ff81082…>was an early foray into this new paradigm. FIfteen years later he developed transpartisan ideas further with Jim Turner in *Voice of the People: The Transpartisan Imperative in American Life*<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-2b250b8911646693bc96e0032cd3808…>. I met Lawrence in the mid-1990s when we were both colleagues of alternative economist and master networker Robert Theobald. I never dreamed I'd find a colleague of William F. Buckley a fascinating and open-minded thinker. Lawrence offered an early lesson in seeing remarkable people beyond my progressive box. The transpartisan activist from the Right with whom I've had the closest connection is former Republican Congressional candidate Joseph McCormick<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-36f935f0279aea8df902b5925f05c25…>. Joseph founded or co-founded a number of transpartisan groups including Democracy in America, Reuniting America, and the Transpartisan Alliance. Most significant for me personally, he organized the 2004 transpartisan conference I wrote about in my article mentioned above. His most recent big contribution to the field is the 2011 e-book *Reuniting America: A Toolkit for Changing the Political Game*<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-642f40f6f508d90013ea0514a95885b…>he co-authored with Steve Bhaerman, available for free download<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-bf96743479c6059e54036439339f657…> To really get a flavor of who Joseph is - the remarkable vision he has, the work he's done, and why I've been so inspired by him - I recommend a 10 minute Song of a Citizen video interview<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-7d28f168165e32c21fb288a4b6f7ed5…>with him at last year's National Coalition for Dialogue and Deliberation<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-9132548132cf41de51c057fdd5605b4…>conference (scroll down, right under the interview with me) and this 20 minute interview<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-1fe81491e2789b299be813b9c2516ea…>with Jim Rough, innovator of Dynamic Facilitation and the Wisdom Council (both of which were watersheds in Joseph's adventure into wise democracy, as they were in mine) Many people - though certainly not all - in the transpartisan movement have been influenced by Ken Wilber's integral theory and the related Spiral Dynamics Integral (SDi) work of Don Beck. Integral theory looks at human development across four domains - the internal and external dimensions of both individual and collective life. Wilber notes that liberals tend to think in terms of external and collective causes and solutions and conservatives in terms of personal and internal causes and solutions - which suggests that "integral" solutions would combine the best of both perspectives. Spiral Dynamics Integral<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-bbd4314464643cd9f3f316191b7f4b6…>offers a values-based developmental model that provides some useful categories for thinking about applications of Wilber's framework and political life in general. I find SDi a powerful model that unfortunately lends itself to - and often defends - elitist hierarchical thinking. If explored and applied with appropriate caution, awareness, and humility, however, SDi can provide many useful perspectives to enhance our lives and evolution together.* A NEW POLITICAL MAP - AND BEYOND One of the intriguing ideas to come out of the transpartisan movement is a somewhat more complex depiction of US politics to replace the simple Left/Right spectrum. It is a quadrant model with "order" at the top, "freedom" at the bottom, "liberal" on the left, and "conservative" on the right. The upper left quadrant contains the Democratic Party, the upper right contains the Republican Party. In the lower left we can place the Greens, most of the Occupy movement and the ACLU, while in the lower right we find Libertarians and the Tea Party. In this model the upper quadrants are controlled by mainstream powerholders who form alliances whenever centralized government or corporate power is challenged, such as in efforts to rein in Wall Street or the National Security Agency. Each side of these top power quadrants also manipulate the political system for their partisan purposes, as we see in the Citizens United decision<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-fe0a1473eb8f4a2e3d9e1744ecfd2b8…>that opened the door to virtually unaccountable "super PAC" intervention in elections and the rush we see in the two-thirds of American states whose governments are totally controlled by one party to make sure voting rights are tweaked<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-d71447e3e053f5889ac6178e8bb22b6…>to maintain their partisan control. Getting, holding, and increasing dominant power is the name of the game in the upper quadrants. The lower quadrants, in contrast, are populist, opposed to exactly the kind of centralized power we find in the upper quadrants. Down in the "Freedom" quadrants, the Left tends to focus on corporate power while the Right targets government power. However, in the last half-dozen years each of these two sides has started realizing more of what the other is objecting to. More people on the Left are questioning the rapidly expanding powers of central government and more people on the Right are questioning the rapidly expanding power of big corporations and conglomerates.<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-8788812a419521cbafb3394a00f89de…>Both sides are also noting the increasingly intimate marriage between public and private power centers. (For a humorous New Age reflection on the same dynamic, see this<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-d2a9bf1032eb8be17bdb5914b3310b6…> .) It is these lower-quadrant folks who are the primary focus of Husseini's article, for their combined power occasionally breaks through into mainstream visibility to shake up what they sometimes call the "Demoplicans" and "Republicrats" in the upper quadrants. Many on both sides also believe that centralized power is (thankfully, in their eyes) about to collapse, so they feel a need to focus on preparing themselves and their communities to be more resilient and self-reliant in the face of that collapse - and increasingly work together to do it right. So we see both Greens and Tea Partiers active in the emerging networks of alternative economics, health care, food, education, and governance - and we see them starting to talk with each other, as they do in the Living Room Conversations. I view this quadrant model as a great escape hatch from the toxic polarizing oversimplifications of the Left/Right worldview. It is worth treasuring for that precious role. However, there's a whole world outside of the escape hatch. We can realize that that handy quadrant model is also a simplification of who we really are. Ultimately, transpartisanship itself is best seen as a bridge to a more real, complex, and auspicious realm where our individual uniqueness and spirit generate a powerfully useful diversity through which, standing on common ground in generative conversations, we can develop truly wise insights and policies to guide our shared lives. The more able we become to be and do THAT, the greater gifts we will bestow upon our children, our communities, our economy, our security, our future generations, and our world. Coheartedly, Tom - SDi proponents stress that each progressive ring of the spiral ideally includes and transcends the previous rings. However, the usual representation of Spiral Dynamics is an ascending spiral that leaves the previous rings behind and below it. Beck and Wilber and their followers defend this with the claim that, yes, each progressive ring is a higher state than the previous one, and that hierarchy is a natural pattern. I agree that hierarchy is a natural pattern, but only one of hundreds of natural patterns. And if "include-and-transcend" is the basic progression of the SDi rings ("levels" in usual SDi terminology), then presenting the spirals in two dimensions - flat like a rope of clay spiraling around itself to form the bottom of a pot - would be a far more accurate representation. In that representation, early/indigenous societies would not be at the bottom of the model; they would be at the center. And each ring would INCLUDE the rings before it. This more accurate presentation seems to evoke negative responses from most SDi advocates I've suggested it to. They call it "flatland" as if this version is saying that everything is as important as everything else. Which misses the point that it more ACCURATELY represents the ideas. This new version also removes the implicit status-seeking of SDi advocates trying to act as if they are at some high point in the developmental hierarchy - often not really engaging with the challenge to "include" the "lower levels". The new representation helps us see all the "colors" of the spiral loops as dimensions of our own complex diverse humanity that we can develop and synergize, individually and collectively. Within THAT frame, SDi ceases to be so useful for elite social control and becomes more a resource for the deeper fulfillment and co-evolution of everyone. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ *To support the Co-Intelligence Institute & Tom Atlee's work...* Please send a tax deductible donation of any amount -- $10, $25, $50, $100, $500 or more -- to The Co-Intelligence Institute, PO Box 493, Eugene, OR 97440 or use your Visa or MasterCard - or Paypal - to make an online donation<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1375212112-cf4008a144177c129e3381e9b0ec6c5…>or tell some friends you know about our work, and invite them to support it. Re: [P2P-F] Netention seen as Neuroeconomics ?
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 27 Sep '13

Thanks Seth. Your response to the Neuroeconomics<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroeconomics> wikipedia page with pages from the OpenCog project ( artificial intelligence ) leads me to learn about the "forgetting agent <http://wiki.opencog.org/w/ForgettingAgent>" and the "Importance Spreading Agent <http://wiki.opencog.org/w/ImportanceSpreadingAgent>", which make me smile, especially when I imagine it in a Anthropomorphic way :) Attention Allocation <http://wiki.opencog.org/w/Attention_allocation> also leads me to remember http://p2pfoundation.net/Attention_Economy *The Attention <http://p2pfoundation.net/Attention> Economy = an economy driven by the exchange of attention* *the Implicit Goal of Attention Economy is: to tightly intertwine everyone at the level of mind* - Michael Goldhaber http://p2pfoundation.net/Attention_Economy_Graphs http://p2pfoundation.net/Intention_Economy http://p2pfoundation.net/Process_Economy Also , for those of us that understand french ( Helene ? Michel ? ) , in relation to neuroeconomics, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIXaROv7bIU found via Stiegler's platform http://pharmakon.fr/wordpress/academie-dete-de-lecole-de-philosophie-depine… My ( Dante's ) critic in relation to the Neuroeconomics as I understand from that video presentation, is that the person presenting it does not yet seem to break down the type of money units/tokens used based on the contracts and transactions these tokens are based on ( and the awareness of their - political - implications / externalities ) , and hence distorts "neuroeconomics" into , imho , awareness limited within the interests of dominant protocols in a limited political economic framework , as it does not , as presented in that video , break down awareness to the political interests and dynamics from the units used. In addition, *I believe we need to create a Neuroeconomics that can also include a granular understanding of constructs of a commons, and/or gift economics, together ( and/or intertwined ) with other relational dynamics ( such as - see Fiske : http://p2pfoundation.net/Relational_Model_Typology_-_Fiske )* Although he gives examples of Neuroeconomics on animals using other units, such as juice or food, he then returns to study with humans based on money ( created out of protocols , imho , by , and in support of , the current monopolistic political economy ). Fwd: Ripple Goes Open Source
by Michel Bauwens 27 Sep '13

27 Sep '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: chris cook <cojock(a)hotmail.com> Date: Fri, Sep 27, 2013 at 1:11 AM Subject: Ripple Goes Open Source To: This is an important development, and correctly recognises: - base-less Bitcoin clones (altCoins) are a dead end. - chain generation for settlement of open bilateral (P2P) obligations is crucial to decentralised credit creation and clearing (which will be a mobile/tablet financial service). This presentation http://www.slideshare.net/ChrisJCook/social-contracts-clearing-union aims to demonstrate that no currency is technically required to create and clear 'people-based' P2P credit, which is not the same thing at all as P2P debt in respect of existing fiat currency manufactured by the banking system. . Of course, in order to increase liquidity, generally acceptable currency, whether land-use based (locally fungible); energy-based (generally fungible) or fiat currency (in the meantime), must be available, which involves policy choices in relation to equitable sharing of commons. However, where I differ from the Ripple guys (I think) is that the framework of trust within which chains can be generated has to be a collective one (the 'Guarantee Society' protocol), rather than routing through individual chains. Official announcement: https://ripple.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3718&p=18013#p18013 [[ Hey all! It's my great pleasure to announce the release of the rippled p2p node source-code, the code that implements the Ripple protocol and powers the Ripple payment network. In conjunction with the open-sourcing we're also announcing that OpenCoin Inc. will change its name to Ripple Labs Inc. That latter part is mostly because the old name was confusing and required explanation. We hope the new name is a bit more self-explanatory - we're the place that Ripple came out of and we'll continue to experiment with and develop Ripple technology. For those of you who are less technical, the significance of our announcement is that Ripple is not another altcoin. All the protocols and data formats have evolved independently of Bitcoin. Our consensus<https://ripple.com/wiki/Consensus>process uses peering (kinda like the Internet itself) instead of mining. The ledger is a data structure that describes the current state of the network as a merkle tree (this has the same effect as the merkle tree of unspent outputs <https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=21995.0> proposals that have come up within the Bitcoin community.) The time between ledgers is adaptive <https://ripple.com/wiki/Continuous_Ledger_Close> rather than fixed. The current implementation supports holding deposit contracts - balances representating currencies other than the native currency. And we support the trading of these currencies in the network - as one atomic transaction, even across multiple conversions. The Ripple ledger is a general purpose data store and we plan to enable you to program the network freely via contracts< https://ripple.com/wiki/User:Justmoon/Contracts:_Overview> . It feels weird that it falls upon me to announce the open-sourcing of this code, since aside from a tiny fix here or there I wrote none of it. But I have worked closely with the people who did and they have completely changed my perspective on what's possible. I remember promoting Bitcoin to blank stares three years ago and now talking to bitcoiners about Ripple I often feel the same way. I hope that over the next year, starting from today, we can change that - and you'll be able to see Ripple as we do. I want to address a few questions that I know will come up: 1. Forks People will fork the network pretty much instantly (as soon as they can figure out our config files [image: :D]), so does that worry me re: job security? Of course. But that's the whole point of open-sourcing: It's one thing we can do to help keep us honest. I believe as long as we continue to live up to our promises, work hard and provide value to users, they will continue to use our network. And in doing so they're supporting our effort to build out the software and extend the network through any and all means available until all XRP are sold or given away. I don't believe in closed-source, I don't believe in copyright, but I do believe in supporting the artists, the developers and entrepreneurs who make things happen. We have a growing team of people with big ideas and ambitious plans. So please consider using the original network so we can continue to develop amazing features and integrate every payment system on the face of the planet. One final request for those planning to fork: If you do fork, please come up with a unique name for your network and a different currency code than XRP. A little search and replace won't kill you and you'll make life a lot easier and less confusing for both our users and your own. 2. Decentralization Whether the code is open-source or not has nothing to do with whether Ripple is decentralized or not. As far as the original network is concerned we will continue to recommend our own validators for the time being. Running the core group of validators lets us close security holes much more quickly, which is very important at least until major feature development is completed. The last of these major features left is contracts. So to recap, the general plan is to focus on contracts next and once their API is reasonably stable focus on building out the tools and testing needed to move to a fully distributed network topology. That said, we do encourage interested parties to start running validators immediately - this is your chance to build a history and reputation as a reliable validator so people will later be more likely to add you to their UNLs <https://ripple.com/wiki/UNL>. 3. Bugs There will be bugs. If they are security-critical, please consider responsible disclosure through bugs(a)ripple.com. We also have a bounty program <https://ripple.com/bug-bounty/> for critical bugs. ------------------------------------------------------------ Alright, that leaves only one thing. https://github.com/ripple/rippled/ Go nuts. ------------------------------------------------------------ Cheers, Stefan Thomas CTO, Ripple Labs Inc. ]] Melvin Carvalho <melvincarvalho(a)gmail.com> Sep 26 03:06PM +0200 > seems like it...anyone able to build it? builds for me! p2p aid apps in kenya

some information about crowdsourcing apps from Africa, inspired by Nairobi mall attack developed by Africa-based Ushahidi, a non-profit. The two new apps are: -locating family, friends and colleagues quickly to check on their safety and -matching people willing to donate blood with blood location centers. Fwd: [Networkedlabour] CfP: Shared Machine Shops Beyond Local Prototyping and Manufacturing [Journal of Peer Production)
by Michel Bauwens 26 Sep '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Johan Söderberg <johan.soderberg(a)sts.gu.se> Date: Tue, Aug 13, 2013 at 2:16 AM Subject: [Networkedlabour] CfP: Shared Machine Shops Beyond Local Prototyping and Manufacturing [Journal of Peer Production) To: "networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org" <networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org > [apologies for cross-posting] Call for Papers - Special issue of the Journal of Peer Production Shared Machine Shops: Beyond Local Prototyping and Manufacturing Editors: Maxigas (Universitat Oberta de Catalunya), Peter Troxler (International Fab Lab Association, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences) http://peerproduction.net/ In the last years we have witnessed an incredible proliferation of shared machine shops in a confusing number of genres: hackerspaces, makerspaces, Fab Labs and their more commercial counterparts such as TechShops, co-working spaces, accelerators and incubators. These are currently "fringe phenomena" because they play a minor role in the production of wealth, knowledge, political consensus and the social organisation of life. Interestingly, however, they also experience the same core transformations as contemporary capitalism. That is, for the individual: the convergence of work, labour and other aspects of life. On a systemic level: the rapid development of algorithmically driven technical systems and their intensifying role in social organisation. Finally, as a corollary: the practical and legitimation crisis of modern institutions, echoed by renewed attempts at self-organisation. Arguably, hackers occupied such an ambiguous position since the beginning of hackerdom, but shared machine shops represent a new configuration. They appear as embodied communities organised in research and production units of physical and logical goods; they even appear to escape the subcultural ghetto as educational institutions, museums, and libraries start to integrate them into their ambit. They are eminent laboratories in both their practices and products: as experimental forms of social institutions, and as the developers of technological prototypes projecting new visions of the future. Industry actors, state authorities and policy makers have recognised such milieus as prolific grounds for recruitment and new organisational models, which in itself warrants critical attention. Inspired by all these developments, we dedicate the next special issue of the Journal of Peer Production to Fab Labs and similar places. Some of the questions we are interested in exploring: * What are the historical conditions and concrete genealogies which enabled the emergence of shared machine shops? (Can we talk about the renewed relevance of craftsmanship?) * Are rapid prototyping practices changing the relationships to technology, research and development, and innovation? (Are shared machine shops democratising knowledge and production or rather building a new maker elite?) * How do technologies cultivated in shared machine shops such as personal fabrication intervene in urban and rural geographies? (Is the time ripe for "global villages" or we have to adapt to "smart cities"?) * What new and old anthropologies and ethics are articulated in shared machine shops? (Who is the “New Man” of Peer Production?) * Finally, how do shared machine shops interface with the political economy of contemporary capitalism and the military-industrial complex? (If the means of production are in the hands of the workers, is that free labour, a new form of outsourcing, or the germ for a next revolution?) Beyond local prototyping and manufacturing capability, what is the contribution of shared machine shops to critical practices of technology appropriation, to products, services and consumption patterns, to urban and rural geographies, and to practical political economy and ethics? Contributions are welcome from scholars and practitioners alike. Collaborative efforts are encouraged. We are mainly expecting academic papers on the one hand, and commented project documentations or narrative vignettes on the other hand, but anything that can be presented on a website could work. However, submitters are advised to keep in mind that the content should address questions of consequence to practitioners, based on realities on the ground, while at the same time they should be reflexive and consider their wider intellectual context. Submission proposals of up to 500 words due by September 30th, 2013, and should be sent to fablabissue(a)peerproduction.net. Submissions will be notified by October 15th, 2013, and full papers and materials (research papers around 8,000 words, testimonies and documents around 3,000 words) are due by January 31st, 2014, for review. Final submission deadline is June 1st, 2014. The special issue is due to appear in early July 2014. Research papers are peer reviewed according to JoPP review policies. _______________________________________________ Networkedlabour mailing list Networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
