Belgian Neonazi uses DMCA to take down Center for a Stateless Society website
by Kevin Carson 24 Sep '13

24 Sep '13

Several days ago C4SS's sister organization, Students for a stateless society, published a notice that its Gent, Belgium affiliate had been taken over by neonazis, disavowed that affiliate, and presented as evidence the following remarks by Olivier Janssens (which are preserved at Pastebin despite Janssens' subsequent takedown attempt, mentioned below). http://www.reddit.com/r/Anarchism/comments/1mzzty/the_center_for_a_stateles… C4SS published a notice linking to the material, but did not itself publish the quotes. Janssens' lawyer contacted S4SS and C4SS demanding the material be taken down, on the grounds that it came from a private Facebook account and his life could be in danger from exposure of such bigoted anti-Muslim comments. He threatened legal action if it were not taken down. Today both the C4SS and S4SS sites went down. On inquiry, we were told by Bluehost it was in response to a DMCA takedown notice by Janssens. We have notified, among others, EFF and Mike Masnick. Michel, is it OK if I write this up (including the original quotes and subsequent threats from Janssen's lawyer) for the blog? -- Kevin Carson Senior Fellow, Karl Hess Scholar in Social Theory Center for a Stateless Society http://c4ss.org "You have no authority that we are bound to respect" -- John Perry Barlow "We are legion.

Fwd: [Newsletter] New film: The Plundering

Public property, which in fact should serve the common needs of society, has become the property of individuals. For example, if that project became successful, the citizens now using this park would not be able to use it.”* – Mikheil Svanidze, *The Plundering* Extreme levels of privatization can only be carried out under conditions where people are under severe pressure, as in the transformation of former Soviet republics towards independence and capitalism. Since the *Rose Revolution* in 2003, the former Soviet republic Georgia under went such a radical transformation. President Mikheil Saakashvili implemented one of the most extreme neoliberal projects in the world. Today, Georgia is 9th of 185 states in the World Bank ranking “Ease of Doing Business”. While the “common good accumulated within the communist regime during 70 years of its existence” (Rusudan Mirzikashvili, *The Plundering*) is being sold off, the unstable situation in a radical, free-market economy and the liquidation of most social safety nets drove most Georgian residents into un-experienced levels of poverty. The film *The Plundering* focuses on four cases of aggressive, state-property privatization policies in Tbilisi. Through interviews, it discusses the privatization of the water system in Tbilisi and of Tbilisi’s popular market, the *Dezerter Bazaar*. A newly emerging movement prevented the attempted sell-off of the National Scientific Library, and the destruction and conversion of the historical Gudiashvili Square in Tbilisi’s city center into a shopping mall. “Objects of strategic importance were sold to the benefit of some people close to the government”, Levan Asabashvili describes these processes of systemic corruption in the film. Usually the purchasers are hiding behind companies registered offshore. Fwd: Mind Shift is here!
by Michel Bauwens 21 Sep '13

21 Sep '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Daniel Pinchbeck <daniel(a)evolver.net> Date: Fri, Sep 20, 2013 at 6:40 PM Subject: Mind Shift is here! To: Daniel Pinchbeck <daniel(a)breakingopenthehead.com> Hi Folks, Sorry about this mass email... I am writing to you because my new talk show, Mind Shift, debuts next week. The show appears on GaiamTV.com , a new subscription service that focuses on spirituality, yoga, and consciousness. I am very excited about my show! As we know, the mainstream media – particularly television – tends to be a deeply regressive force, constricting the popular mind. For a number of years now, I have yearned to create a transformative television show – hopefully, in the future, a network. I am grateful to Gaiam for providing an opportunity to learn and explore. As a co-founder of Reality Sandwich and Evolver, I helped many writers and artists reach new audiences, and helped to build a global community for transformative ideas. I also made the documentary, 2012: Time for Change. I hope, in the future, to take what I have learned through these efforts and build a network that gives a full expression of the new planetary culture. We need a mass media that expresses humanity’s highest ideals and greatest potential, instead of one that keeps people trapped in fear and consumerism. I invite you to watch the first episode here: http://www.gaiamtv.com/live/content1 . (Gaiam requests that you keep this link private.) The first episode features discussions with visionary artist Alex Grey and Michael Muhammad Knight, author of Tripping with Allah, on ayahuasca and Islam. Subsequent episodes feature comedian Russell Brand, Eve Ensler (The Vagina Monologues), musician Ben Lee, and authors including Howard Bloom, Richard Smoley, and UFOlogist Richard Dolan. At Mind Shift, we are able to bring serious attention to areas that are generally suppressed and ignored in the mainstream. We are currently building an audience for the show – and I am reaching out to you to ask for your help in this. If you have a Blog, I am hoping you can write about the show, or send updates on Twitter or Facebook about it (using #mindshift if possible). You can interview me about it if you want. Also, GaiamTV has an affiliate marketing program. If you have a mailing list of people who might want to subscribe to see this show and other Gaiam offerings, we can give you a link so that you get a percentage of the revenue that comes into Gaiam each month. Christy at Gaiam ( Christy.McConnell(a)gaiam.com ) can send you banners for your website, if you want them, and help you in other ways. Of course, I would prefer that Mind Shift was available for free online – but it is only because Gaiam produced the show that it exists, and they do offer lots of excellent content on their site, including yoga and workout videos, as well as some other talk shows. Please help spread the word so that Mind Shift prospers – and we can produce more video content that supports the new planetary culture! Thank you for your time and attention. Yours, Daniel Ps – Gaiam created some short promotional videos about Mind Shift that you are welcome to post or use as you see fit: *Mind Shift YouTube Playlist* URL: * http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLVGpOEyPHwiZN1_oBl1hYu0tW8BX_K8_5* Daniel Pinchbeck - Mind Shift - Psychedelics & Religion - * http://youtu.be/215uVIRg0ZM* Daniel Pinchbeck - Mind Shift - Discusses Burning Man - * http://youtu.be/aAQ1IlPPTC4* Daniel Pinchbeck - Mind Shift – How I Choose Guests? - * http://youtu.be/41ct5iPBPqg* Daniel Pinchbeck - Why is Mind Shift so Important in Today's World? - * http://youtu.be/EzEzbXzbDIU* Daniel Pinchbeck - Mind Shift - What is Mind Shift? - * http://youtu.be/LBrhMe1UDhA* * * -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Conway ------------------------------ *From:* Conway, Ryan Timothy *Sent:* Tuesday, August 27, 2013 5:55 PM *To:* commoning(a)lists.wissensallmende.de *Cc:* communitycommonsproject(a)gmail.com; radicalcommonswg(a)gmail.com *Subject:* FW: Workshop on the Ostrom Workshop (WOW5), June 18-21, 2014 Fellow Commoners, Please see the attached information on participating in an Ostrom Workshop conference that we call the Workshop on the Workshop (WoW). This will be the first WoW conference since the Ostroms' passing and we will likely have a new Executive Director by this time. With those things in mind, this WoW conference could be a pivotal moment in the future of the Ostrom Workshop. As some of you know, there's a small cadre of us Workshoppers who would like to see the Ostrom Workshop maintain the spirit of the Ostroms', as champions of interdisciplinary, applied, cutting-edge research. In this spirit, some of us are hoping for a few things to come from the Workshop, after hearing many voices at the conference: 1. Greater accessibility to the broad, international network of commons enthusiasts, practitioners, and scholars. 2. More recognition of commons that are not the typical natural-resource CPRs that currently get the most attention (forests, fisheries, groundwater basins, etc.). It would be wonderful to see autonomous zones, occupied parks & squares, squatted buildings, greenspaces, soundscapes, social space and Residual Residential Commons receive greater representation in Workshop colloquia and research. 3. Conceptual expansion of what "counts" as commons or common-pool-resources. This includes more attention to the living social behaviors that constitute acts of "commoning." 4. Challenging conversations in political philosophy, specifically between folks fond of the Autonomist traditions and Workshop folks fond of Tocquevillian associationalism. No longer should political divisions restrain the dialogue among these groups, as the conversations had -- however potentially contentious -- are much needed, at this pivotal time of change in the Workshop and, more so, our World. 5. Greater recognition of the theories and actions of commons practitioners, aiming for the cultivation of a praxis born from complementary conversations among practitioners and scholars. To effectively spread and implement commons actions, thinking, and practice, it would be wonderful to see practitioner-scholar working groups develop in the Ostrom Workshop, and beyond. 6. Greater attention given to effective, accessible pedagogy, such that the concepts, practices, and research on the commons can be available to all. 7. Cultivation of an interdisciplinary working group focused on empowerment research and emancipatory research methods. Freirean empowerment pedagogies, Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR), and other action-research methods would enhance existing Workshop research not just toward application, but toward the pursuit of human empowerment, social justice, and self-actualization. This could be coordinated by enthusiasts, practitioners, and scholars both within and outside of the Ostrom Workshop. Lastly, I will be coordinating two Working Groups / Panels: The Radical Commons Working Group: seeking to address issues of political philosophy and social justice, both including and moving far beyond what is listed above. and The Community Commons Working Group: seeking to address issues of practice, praxis, and pedagogy, both including and moving far beyond what is listed above. Please contact me if you are interested in helping to further define these working groups and there aims. Also, please contact me if you wish to collaborate in coordinating and developing the talks, panels, and break-out sessions associated with these groups. These working groups are also in the process of fundraising, in the hopes of being able to offer limited financial support to interested participants who may otherwise not be able to attend. Please join us in developing the future of the Ostrom Workshop, at this pivotal moment in its history. What would you like to see happening at the Ostrom Workshop. Let's have a conversation! We hope you are looking forward to WOW5. From the number of inquiries we have received regarding the creation of WOW5 (Workshop on the Ostrom Workshop) Working Groups, it's clear that in the true spirit of the Ostrom Workshop that bottom-up collective action is already afoot! This email is to communicate our current timeline and process for WOW5 organization. 1) Working Group submissions – Deadline: September 30, 2013 Working Groups have traditionally been a core component of WOWs. For those unfamiliar, Working Groups are effectively organized sessions where a group of individuals form a session or sessions on a common theme. We encourage these organized sessions and, as noted above, have already received a number of contacts and updates. If you are interested in serving as the contact person/organizer for a Working Group, please send an email to Gayle Higgins at wow5(a)indiana.edu by September 30, 2013. We will create Working Group and session IDs from these and post these to the conference website. Then, participants in these sessions can attach their abstract to a specific Working Group/session at the time of submission. 2) Abstract submissions – Deadline: December 6, 2013 We welcome abstract submissions from those planning to participate in a Working Group and *also strongly encourage unaffiliated submissions as well*. Once we have a tentative list of Working Groups, we will post that list to the conference website. If you are affiliated with a Working Group session, you can select that at the time of submission. Otherwise, you can simply submit your abstract as an open submission identifying topical keywords, and the program committee will place your abstract in an appropriate session. Once the abstract submission website is live, we will send an additional announcement. 3) Paper submissions – Deadline: April 1, 2014 We welcome paper submissions for WOW5 associated with presentations, but they are not required. However, if you would like to have your paper part of the WOW5 materials, please plan to submit it by the above date. As has been tradition in the past, papers submitted to WOW5 will become part of the Digital Library of the Commons <http://dlc.dlib.indiana.edu/dlc/>. 4) Accommodation reservations – Deadline: May 15, 2014 A block of rooms has been reserved at two different locations: the Indiana Memorial Union Biddle Hotel and the Willkie Residence Center (student housing). Participants need to make their own room reservation at the Indiana Memorial Union <http://imu.indiana.edu/hotel/index.shtml>. You will need to include the block code, which is WOW5. Gayle Higgins will make reservations for those participants choosing to stay at Willkie Residence Center. Please see the information for Willkie Residence Center <http://www.rps.indiana.edu/willkierescenter.cfml> and then send an email to: wow5(a)indiana.edu with your requirements. *After May 15, 2014, any remaining rooms in our reserved block will be released back to IMU*. In early spring, we will distribute a list of additional hotels that are within walking distance of campus. We are in the process of building the WOW5 website<http://www.indiana.edu/~wow5/>. Accommodation information will be available on our website within the next 30 days. 5) Book display – There will be a book display in the conference office, which will be located in the Charter Room. All participants are invited to send or bring copies of their recent publications to be exhibited at the book display. If your work may be ordered through a publisher, please feel free to include flyers or order forms. For further information, please see our website or contract Emily Castle at efcastle(a)indiana.edu. 6) We will send information about Registration by mid-September. * * *All sessions will be held at the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU).* *Registration, conference materials, book exhibit, and message center will be located in the IMU Charter Room.* If you have additional questions or will need a letter of invitation for WOW5, please contact Gayle Higgins at wow5(a)indiana.edu. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Sep 16, 2013 at 2:08 PM Subject: How does reification ensure our wilful subordination to authority ? - Craig Gent To: "econowmix(a)googlegroups.com" <econowmix(a)googlegroups.com>, " global-survival(a)googlegroups.com" <global-survival(a)googlegroups.com>, GTM groupe monnaie <gtmonnaie(a)lists.cassiopea.org> I personally propose the title can also be read this way : *" Monetization as Reified Political Control "* * * Paper via Academia ( and in attachment ) : http://www.academia.edu/4498786/How_does_reification_ensure_our_wilful_subo… ABSTRACT: Reification has been a problematic concept. It has been deployed across a range of areas, referring to the depersonalizing character of capitalist exchange as well as the dehumanized administrative model that made the Holocaust possible. It has been viewed both as a tool of the bourgeoisie waged against the workers, as well as a product of the Enlightenment, ultimately created by us. While the four key thinkers in this dissertation – Lukács, Adorno, Foucault and Honneth – have different perspectives on reification and its relation to truth and power, all agree it has implications for the way we relate to each other socially in everyday life and for our subjection within society. This dissertation aims to specify what we mean by reification, and will seek to show how as a product of our will to truth, we have privileged positivist rationality and subsequently become detached from the antecedent stance of qualitative recognition. I will argue that it is this process of ‘forgetting’ which has made possible our wilful subordination in disciplinary society. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
