Join the 2013 Buckminster Fuller Challenge Jurors Jason McLennan (International Living Future Institute), Andrew Revkin (NY Times, Pace University), Woody Tasch (Slow Money), and Linda Weintraub (Eco Art Writer and Practitioner) in this unprecedented opportunity to hear from some of the world's leading systems thinkers and designers about their insights into holistic strategies to address critical global issues such as Climate Change. Design for 100% is hosted by Design for Social Innovation at SVA on October 7th, 2013 from 6:00 - 7:30 pm EST at the Beatrice Theatre, 333 West 23rd Street in New York City. The panelists will have spent the day selecting the winner of socially responsible design's highest award, The Buckminster Fuller Challenge. The Challenge was created specifically to advance Fuller's famous call to the world's most inventive and creative young people to "make the world work for 100% of humanity..." "How do we accomplish this in the face of epochal, systemic global crises like Climate Change? What are the opportunities and challenges for translating breakthrough creative vision into tangible solutions? These are the questions our panel will be grappling with — and we are thrilled to be sharing this important conversation as an associate partner of the fantastic city-wide Marfa Dialogues/NY events." said Elizabeth Thompson, Executive Director of the Buckminster Fuller Institute. Marfa Dialogues/NY is a two-month calendar of events featuring a mix of environmental panels, live theatre, major art exhibitions, installations, community forums, musical performances and more — including the 2013 Buckminster Fuller Challenge Conferring Ceremony at Cooper Union on November 20th, where BFI will be awarding the 2013 winner with the annual $100,000 prize. "Our goal in supporting Marfa Dialogues/NY is to connect and amplify the voices in this city-wide conversation as people engage the issue of climate change through a cultural lens," said Christy MacLear, Executive Director of The Rauschenberg Foundation. "Through Marfa Dialogues/NY we are not only carrying on Bob Rauschenberg's commitment to the environment but also extending the discussion about climate change into new communities and inspiring innovative responses to this critically important issue." Due to limited space, please rsvp HERE. The Buckminster Fuller Institute is dedicated to accelerating the development and deployment of solutions which radically advance human well-being and the health of our planet’s ecosystems. Our programs combine unique insight into global trends and local needs with a comprehensive approach to design. We encourage participants to conceive and apply transformative strategies based on a crucial synthesis of whole systems thinking, Nature's fundamental principles, and an ethically driven worldview. By facilitating convergence across the disciplines of art, science, design and technology, our work extends the profoundly relevant legacy of R. Buckminster Fuller. In this way, we strive to catalyze the collective intelligence required to fully address the unprecedented challenges before us. The Buckminster Fuller Challenge annually awards a prize of $100,000 to support the development and implementation of a design strategy that has significant potential to solve humanity's most pressing problems. Applications are open until 9th September. Here are the basics: * Participants will receive training from expert mentors on everything from campaign strategy to the economics of the crisis. * Each organisation brings one of their campaigns to work on during the programme * We are looking for 10 pairs of campaigners from 10 organisations from a mixture of NGOs, Trade Unions, Faith Groups and grass roots groups The forerunner to this programme had over 90 applicants from which we chose 19 campaigners including 38 Degrees, Unite, The Quakers and more. Here's what one of these participants says about the course: "The mentoring course was one of the best experiences of my life! The people I met, the campaign strategy sessions, the useful insights into communications and framing, were exactly what I needed. Fwd: [opennetcoalition] European Parliament Must Vote (Again) Against Censorship
by Michel Bauwens 09 Sep '13

09 Sep '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <jz(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Mon, Sep 9, 2013 at 9:02 PM Subject: [opennetcoalition] European Parliament Must Vote (Again) Against Censorship To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Themes: FREE SPEECH, NET FILTERING, CENSORSHIP, GAMBLING, EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT La Quadrature du Net – For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/european-parliament-must-vote-again-against… European Parliament Must Vote (Again) Against Censorship *** Paris, 9 September 2013 – During a plenary vote scheduled for 10 September 2013, the European Parliament will vote on a report of Ashley Fox [1] (ECR - UK) on “Online gambling in the internal market” [2]. On behalf of such laudable goals as child protection, fight against money laundering and addiction to gambling, the report calls for the setting up of dangerous online censorship. Thus, La Quadrature du Net warns the Members of the European Parliament and urges citizens to contact their representatives to ask them to remain opposed to these anti-democratic measures during the vote of tomorrow (by supporting the split vote on §19 - 1st part). *** Adopted at the end of May 2013 in “Consumer protection” committee with 32 votes in favor and 3 against, the report of Ashley Fox (ECR - UK) on “Online gambling in the internal market” “recommends the exchange of best practices between Member States on enforcement measures – such as on establishing white and black lists of, and preventing access to, illegal gambling websites” [3]. The ineffectiveness and dangers of such measures have been well proven: many studies [4] have highlighted the risk of content censorship, the high cost, and the ease to circumvent it for individuals benefiting from these illegal activities. La Quadrature du Net reminds that the only effective way against these illegal activities is the removal of content directly at the source, on the servers, and taking to court the individuals who publish it. In the best case, the implementation of the censorship measures proposed in this report would be expensive and inefficient, and in the worst case, they would have a serious impact on the freedom of communication of citizens. Nevertheless, the measures proposed by Ashley Fox seem to find support among some EPP and S&D MEPs. Both of these political groups appear unable to define a coherent position on this issue, thus, the outcome of the vote is difficult to predict, and a modest number of voices could change it. MEPs must reject this attempt to impose censorship online. “As often with online content, some of our representatives think they can solve problems by hidding it and by imposing censorship. Unfortunately, this solution is pure display as it doesn't solve anything but is most likely to affect the freedom of communication for all citizens. Because it can only undermine the fundamental values of our democracy, censorship cannot solve any problem, legitimate or not, and should be banned and repealed where it already exist.” declared Jérémie Zimmermann, co-founder and spokesperson of the citizen organisation La Quadrature du Net. * References * 1. https://memopol.lqdn.fr/europe/parliament/deputy/AshleyFox/ 2. http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?type=REPORT&reference=A7-2013… 3. Item 19 of the report: "19. Recommends the introduction of uniform, pan-European common security standards for electronic identification and cross border e-verification services; welcomes the Commission’s proposal for a directive on e-identification and authentication, which will allow for interoperability of national e-identification schemes where these exist; calls, therefore, for registration and identification procedures to be streamlined and made more efficient, notably in order to ensure efficient identification mechanisms and to prevent multiple accounts per player and access by minors to online gambling websites; recommends the exchange of best practices between Member States on enforcement measures – such as on establishing white and black lists of, and preventing access to, illegal gambling websites, jointly defining secure and traceable payment solutions, and considering the feasibility of blocking financial transactions – in order to protect consumers against illegal operators;" 4. https://www.laquadrature.net/en/net-filtering-violates-the-rule-of-law ** About la Quadrature du Net ** La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that defends the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. More specifically, it advocates for the adaptation of French and European legislations to respect the founding principles of the Internet, most notably the free circulation of knowledge. In addition to its advocacy work, the group also aims to foster a better understanding of legislative processes among citizens. Through specific and pertinent information and tools, La Quadrature du Net hopes to encourage citizens' participation in the public debate on rights and freedoms in the digital age. Personally have no idea what June is exactly referring to as it does not show up in my email; could also be in the settings of the receiver's email program? Can anyone explain this to me? ?It would be nice to think the TEF has actually become "transformative" enough in its message of sustainable education to have interested the powers that be who don't want to do so, but that's a little grandiose? I don't understand this? Love to hear from those who might? Do technologies like IVF and domestic machinery really benefit women or entrench their existing social roles? How do shifts in technology affect the oppression of women? The Breaking the Frame series: discussions on the politics of technology Technology dominates our world, but many people think ‘its just a neutral tool’ or that technology equals progress. Although it does, of course, bring benefits, technology is largely designed and controlled by corporate, military and patriarchal elites to serve their interests and exert their power. To prepare for a gathering next May, we are organising a series of monthly events to look at the technology politics of food, energy, work, war, the economy, health etc. Gender issues are part of our analysis from the beginning and are included in all of our meetings. There will be speakers from campaigning groups and lots of time for discussion. July 8th Technology out of control?
