Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Or take the time and read some very old documented evidence available at a library near you= but you may need to stay there awhile on microfiche. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Janssen Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 4:39 PM To: P2P Foundation mailing list Subject: Re: [P2P-F] Fw: Info On Sun, Oct 23, 2011 at 10:32 AM, Natalie Golovin <10natalie(a)cox.net> wrote: > The European Tribes treated the Natives no worse than they treated each > other. Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. As Guneser explained, it was that social revolution, now embedded in the personal lives and working institutions of the people living in Rojava, that ultimately ensured that Kobane had the strength to fight off ISIS attacks. Providing much needed context for a captivated audience, Guneser explained that the revolution taking place in Rojava did not come out of nowhere, but in reality grew out of a 40-year movement for liberation and self-determination in which the Kurdistan Workers’ Party and their imprisoned leader Abdullah Ocalan developed theories of revolutionary struggle and social change that have proved highly resilient and increasingly credible. Indeed, when the PKK was formed and Ocalan was forced out of Turkey into Syria, Kobane was one of the first cities in which he organised. When the PKK emerged in 1978, the Kurdish people had already faced decades of denial and repression of various forms in all four states in which they resided; the international acceptance of this denial, even by states often at odds with each other, meant that according to the PKK, Kurdistan was an international colony. Much like many national liberation and anti-colonial movements across the world at that time, the PKK became engaged in a fight against both colonialism and capitalism, but sought to do by addressing critical concerns that had been stumbling blocks for revolutionary movements in the past – the question of the nation state; the question of women’s freedom; and the question of violence. It was through historical study and reflexive praxis on these issues that the concepts of Democratic Autonomy and Democratic Modernity, terms coined by Ocalan and embodied by the autonomous social and political institutions emerging in Rojava and Bakur (north Kurdistan, Turkey), came into being. You can watch Havin’s talk in full here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwLF6SQIOvE The afternoon’s second speaker, anthropologist and author David Graeber, likened the PKK movement to the Zapatistas in their democratic form and organising principles. Having recently been part of a delegation to Cezire Canton, Graeber offered the audience an insight into how democratic autonomy was being implemented in Rojava. What most struck him, he said was the ‘incredibly difficult circumstances people are living in and the ambition of their vision’. Rojava is still under total embargo and the border with Turkey remains stubbornly closed, and yet despite being in desperate need of food, water and basic medical supplies, this experiment in participatory, bottom-up democracy is still thriving. For example, Graber described one visit to an academy for the Asayish (local police forces), where he was told that their ultimate plan was to give everybody 6 weeks of police training and then abolish the police. He also spoke about Peace and Justice Committees which are responsible for local level justice work and use forms of restorative rather than punitive justice for perpetrators of crime; women’s organisations that can veto any assembly decision on the basis that it impacts women’s freedom; and the many academies, which have been set up to de-professionalise and democratise the production of knowledge. These academies exist for many areas of society and are a key part of the revolutionary process because repression often continues through the centralisation of expertise. While it is clear that Rojava will face serious obstacles for the future, the possibilities that it presents for Syria and the region are many, particularly for those traditionally most excluded by the present systems. *Thank you to Havin Guneser and David Graeber for their presentations; to Margaret Owen for chairing the event and to Memed for filming on the day. *-- *Peace in Kurdistan * *Campaign for a political solution of the Kurdish Question *Email: estella24(a)tiscali.co.uk <mailto:[email protected] <estella24(a)tiscali.co.uk>> www.peaceinkurdistancampaign.com Contacts Estella Schmid 020 7586 5892 & Melanie Sirinathsingh - Tel: 020 7272 7890 Fax: 020 7263 0596 *Patrons: Lord Avebury, Lord Rea, Lord Dholakia, Baroness Sarah Ludford, Jill Evans MEP, Jean Lambert MEP, Jeremy Corbyn MP, Hywel Williams MP, Elfyn Llwyd MP, Conor Murphy MP, John Austin, Bruce Kent, Gareth Peirce, Julie Christie, Noam Chomsky, John Berger, Edward Albee, Margaret Owen OBE, Prof Mary Davis, Mark Thomas, Nick Hildyard, Stephen Smellie, Derek Wall* _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: Scott Walker of Wisconsin
by Michel Bauwens 28 Feb '15

28 Feb '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Bob Reuschlein <bobreuschlein(a)gmail.com> Date: Sat, Feb 28, 2015 at 5:11 PM Subject: Scott Walker of Wisconsin To: Link to send to others by: https://bobreuschlein.wordpress.com/2015/02/28/scott-walker-of-wisconsin/ *Scott Walker of Wisconsin* By Dr. Bob Reuschlein The leading Republican candidate for President in some polls, Scott Walker, Governor of Wisconsin shows a consistent pattern of indifference to the law and the truth in all his elections. Born in the high military spending high crime state of Colorado, he was the son of a Baptist Minister and a bookkeeper. After five years they went to Iowa, then at age 10 to Wisconsin where Scott graduated high school from a small town. Attending but 34 credits short of graduation, Scott Walker was disgraced from the Student President race at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The student newspaper reversed their endorsement when Walker resorted to a last week smear campaign against his honorable opponent and lost the race in a landslide. His campaign also stole all copies of the student newspaper when the bad endorsement came out. When Walker ran for Governor, six members of his Milwaukee County Executive staff were indicted and convicted for working on Republican political campaigns, including his, while drawing paychecks as public employees. Walker was the subject of that John Doe investigation, listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in that process. This becomes a common Walker practice to throw others under the bus in pursuit of his higher ambitions. When he defeated the recall, the only governor in American history to do so, he took advantage of a loophole in the fundraising statutes in Wisconsin to raise almost unlimited amounts of Koch brothers’ money to outspend the other side two to one, about $70 million to $30 million, unprecedented sums for Wisconsin politics. Just like in his student president race, his first election to governor, and his reelection to governor, he has denied his intentions to attack the existence of public sector unions the first time and private sector unions the second time. However, he revealed his intentions when a donor of $1.3 million to his campaigns was caught on tape in a film about Janesville, Wisconsin, asking him about right to work laws. His reply was first public sector unions, using a divide and conquer approach. His outrageous sneak attack on public sector unions in Wisconsin brought 500,000 protestors to the capital in February March 2011. He was caught on tape entertaining the thought of introducing troublemakers into the peaceful crowd, which he later decided not to do. He lied to the Oshkosh newspaper one week before the 2010 election saying he would negotiate with the unions. After the election he immediately began ALEC research on legislation the first week and refused to accept $800 million in federal railroad money between Milwaukee and Madison. Walker’s action led directly to the end of thousands of jobs in a Milwaukee factory. Then in office, he gave a tax break to corporations in January enough to create a budget crisis. He then used that budget crisis to strip away public sector union rights. This overreach was way beyond the health pension and wage cuts needed to balance the budget after the Bush 2008 recession and the new revenue cuts. For the reelection, he continued the lying by claiming job growth although he had half the jobs he promised in the 2010 election, and Wisconsin fell behind ten other Midwest states in job growth during his first four years. His give away to the rich tax cuts are the exact opposite of Dayton in Minnesota, with Minnesota now ranked #9 for business climate by the Wall Street Journal among states while Wisconsin is ranked #32. He claimed to reduce the deficit in reelection to half a billion, but after reelection he admitted it exceeded $2 billion. In Minnesota, when taxes were raised on the rich rather Walker’s lowering them, the deficit went from $4 billion to a surplus of $1 billion. Now Walker is pursuing “divide and conquer” again as he first took on the Universities in the budget, then a couple of weeks later announced a surprise special session to pass so-called “right to work” laws to allow freeloaders to avoid paying unions for the services and pay raises earned by those unions. *Dignity or Rankism at Work* by Dr. Bob Reuschlein Wisconsin is passing so-called “right to work” laws this week. People who do not believe in democracy or real equal rights under the law especially resent fair treatment in the workplace. They reward freeloaders who want to enjoy the benefits of a union without paying for them. They want wage slave work under a dictatorship in the workplace. They want the feudalism of lords and serfs. They also seem to want to destroy the meritocracy and replace it with birthright capitalism, a self perpetuating aristocracy of those who were born on third base and think they hit a triple. For example, the inherited wealth Koch brothers who want to buy the next election with 989 million dollars. In the government world, when a majority votes for higher military spending, those of us who object can’t just refuse to pay our taxes. But with Wrong to Work (mislabeled “right to work”) legislation, an employee can refuse to pay union dues while still being entitled to the rewards of those union dues. This freeloading is encouraged by the same people who often complain about the poor “freeloading” off of society, a very strange double standard. So it’s okay to undermine democracy in the workplace, but you can go to jail if you undermine democracy in the greater society. A Great Civil War was once fought in this country over the right to separate from the Union. Those states who lost that Civil War have taken over the modern Republican Party so much so that it is no longer the party of Abraham Lincoln. This effort to diminish the rights of workers is nothing if it is not a clear case of rankism, favoring those in power over the dignity of those subject to the power of others. Jesus’ challenge to those who would abuse others with their power and riches is exactly why he ran afoul of the religious and Roman authorities on Good Friday. So these same people don’t hesitate to inflict harm on workers, while claiming to love Jesus. With such twisted logic, no wonder some of them believe the president doesn’t love this country. Four page sermon on “Jesus and Empire”: https://www.academia.edu/9979093/JESUS_and_Empire_12-4-05_4_p._2005 So here in Wisconsin, Scott Walker continues to tell lies during the election season and then do just what he has said he won’t do, when actually elected. The consistency is to say anything to get elected, then do as much as you think you can get away with to destroy the political base of the opposition party. The new so-called right to work law is a case in point. The legislature will fast track this bill in a special session while ignoring the very real budget problems that might have justified a special session. The point is to punish his political opponents and weaken their opposition, although it is supposedly to improve the business climate. But TV commercials claim 400 businesses don’t want the law changed because they will lose business. So the agenda is set in high military high wealth parts of the country the Koch Brothers live in. Scott Walker, born in high military spending Colorado, does not love Wisconsin, he loves power. He wants to destroy the Wisconsin Idea and the many educational strengths of Wisconsin. I still fail to see how less money for the middle class can possibly improve business sales or attract better workers, but that’s just me. Currently 25,000 people are living or have just moved back into Kobane and many more are waiting their chance to return home, but an absence of basic food and water supplies and the physical destruction of the city’s infrastructure makes the situation extremely precarious. It was established early 2014 to serve as the *mobilization coordination space in the run up to the climate conference that is taking place in Paris in December 2015 (COP21)*. It’s a French platform but aims to coordinate with international networks to plan for mobilizations around climate change in the run up to and during COP21, in France, Europe and across the world. The Coalition organised a first international strategy meeting in Paris last August with 200 participants from different continents. It proved very useful in bringing groups together, taking stock of what they were thinking, where there was consensus to move forward on, what decisions required further work as well as strengthen a common mobilization thread and narrative. Since, a number of discussions took place on the Coalition’s international mailing list, on teleconferences organised by the Coalition, as well as in Lima in December 2014 with the help of the Peruvian mobilization committee. See attached the finalized call to action which includes key mobilization moments in 2015. As a coalition, we have identified the need for the international movements and networks to meet face-to-face a second time to discuss mobilization strategies in the lead up to and around the Paris climate COP. The Coalition believes this meeting could help move forward on key questions on the shapes and intents of the climate mobilizations from June to December, and hopefully, beyond. We have decided to *host this meeting on the 23**rd** and 24**th** of March 2015, in Tunis,* to benefit from the infrastructure and logistics in place for the World Social Forum taking place that same week. We wish to extend this invitation to all groups involved in and preparing for mobilizations on climate change in 2015 and beyond. We hope many of you will be attend or provide thoughts in advance of the meeting. A draft agenda will be circulated two weeks before the meeting for comments. Please bear in mind that we are also planning for a 3rd international meeting on the 14th and 15th of June, in Paris, to continue building and articulating mobilization plans and strategies the run up to the COP in Paris. *Juliette Rousseau* *Coordinator* *Coalition Climat 21* *Please RSVP here: *http://goo.gl/forms/jr3AxVtUpu *For any queries, email:* contact(a)coalitionclimat21.org *Please find attached:* the call to action + a logistical note _______________________________________________ FSE-ESF mailing list FSE-ESF(a)lists.fse-esf.org http://lists.fse-esf.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/fse-esf _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: peer production of security

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Andreas Schmidt <shmt(a)me.com> Date: Fri, Feb 27, 2015 at 11:42 PM Subject: Re: peer production of security To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> Andreas @shmt, netdefences.com/research, shmt(a)me.com —— I would like to inform you about the general availability of my doctoral thesis, entitled “Secrecy versus openness — Internet security and the limits of open source and peer production”. For an abstract, please see further below. An online version is ready for download at the institutional repository of Delft University of Technology. http://dx.doi.org/10.4233/uuid:ecf237ed-7131-4455-917f-11e55e03df0d. The PDF includes a five-pages summary. In addition, there is superbly designed and manufactured print version available. It is not for sale, but my faculty has a decent number of copies available for interested individuals and organisations. - - - - - Abstract Open source and peer production have been praised as organisational models that could change the world for the better. It is commonly asserted that almost any societal activity could benefit from distributed, bottom-up collaboration — by making societal interaction more open, more social, and more democratic. However, we also need to be mindful of the limits of these models. How could they function in environments hostile to openness? Security is a societal domain more prone to secrecy than any other, except perhaps for romantic love. In light of the destructive capacity of contemporary cyber attacks, how has the Internet survived without a comprehensive security infrastructure? Secrecy vs. openness describes the realities of Internet security production through the lenses of open source and peer production theories. The study offers a glimpse into the fascinating communities of technical experts, who played a pivotal role when the chips were down for the Internet after large-scale attacks. After an initial flirtation with openness in the early years, operational Internet security communities have put in place institutional mechanisms that have resulted in less open forms of social production. / <http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/>

Fwd: [NetworkedLabour] Fwd: Other News - What Greece Won
by Michel Bauwens 27 Feb '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: peter waterman <peterwaterman1936(a)gmail.com> Date: Sat, Feb 28, 2015 at 12:20 AM Subject: [NetworkedLabour] Fwd: Other News - What Greece Won To: "<networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org>" < networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org> *What Greece Won* *Paul Krugman* - The New York Times* Last week, after much drama, the new Greek government reached a deal with its creditors. Earlier this week, the Greeks filled in some details on how they intend to meet the terms. So how did it go? Well, if you were to believe many of the news reports and opinion pieces of the past few days, you’d think that it was a disaster — that it was a “surrender” on the part of Syriza, the new ruling coalition in Athens. Some factions within Syriza apparently think so, too. But it wasn’t. On the contrary, Greece came out of the negotiations pretty well, although the big fights are still to come. And by doing O.K., Greece has done the rest of Europe a favor. To make sense of what happened, you need to understand that the main issue of contention involves just one number: the size of the Greek primary surplus, the difference between government revenues and government expenditures not counting interest on the debt. The primary surplus measures the resources that Greece is actually transferring to its creditors. Everything else, including the notional size of the debt — which is a more or less arbitrary number at this point, with little bearing on the amount anyone expects Greece to pay — matters only to the extent that it affects the primary surplus Greece is forced to run. For Greece to run any surplus at all — given the depression-level slump that it’s in and the effect of that depression on revenues — is a remarkable achievement, the result of incredible sacrifices. Nonetheless, Syriza has always been clear that it intends to keep running a modest primary surplus. If you are angry that the negotiations didn’t make room for a full reversal of austerity, a turn toward Keynesian fiscal stimulus, you weren’t paying attention. The question instead was whether Greece would be forced to impose still more austerity. The previous Greek government had agreed to a program under which the primary surplus would triple over the next few years, at immense cost to the nation’s economy and people. Why would any government agree to such a thing? Fear. Essentially, successive leaders in Greece and other debtor nations haven’t dared to challenge extreme creditor demands, for fear that they would be punished — that the creditors would cut off their cash flow or, worse yet, implode their banking system if they balked at ever-harsher budget cuts. So did the current Greek government back down and agree to aim for those economy-busting surpluses? No, it didn’t. In fact, Greece won new flexibility for this year, and the language about future surpluses was obscure. It could mean anything or nothing. And the creditors did not pull the plug. Instead, they made financing available to carry Greece through the next few months. That is, if you like, putting Greece on a short leash, and it means that the big fight over the future is yet to come. But the Greek government didn’t succumb to the bum’s rush, and that in itself is a kind of victory. Why, then, all the negative reporting? To be fair, fiscal policy isn’t the only issue. There were and are also arguments about things like privatization of public assets, where Syriza has agreed not to reverse deals already made, and labor market regulation, where some of the “structural reform” of the austerity era will apparently stand. Syriza also agreed to crack down on tax evasion, although why collecting taxes is supposed to be a defeat for a leftist government is a mystery to me. Still, nothing that just happened justifies the pervasive rhetoric of failure. Actually, my sense is that we’re seeing an unholy alliance here between left-leaning writers with unrealistic expectations and the business press, which likes the story of Greek debacle because that’s what is supposed to happen to uppity debtors. But there was no debacle. Provisionally, at least, Greece seems to have ended the cycle of ever-more-savage austerity. And, as I said, in so doing, Greece has done the rest of Europe a favor. Remember, in the background of the Greek drama is a European economy that, despite some positive numbers lately, still seems to be sliding into a deflationary trap. Europe as a whole desperately needs to end austerity madness, and this week there have been some slightly positive signs. Notably, the European Commission has decided not to fine France and Italy for exceeding their deficit targets. Levying these fines would have been insane given market realities; France can borrow for five years at an interest rate of 0.002 percent. That’s right, 0.002 percent. But we’ve seen a lot of similar insanity in recent years. And you have to wonder whether the Greek story played a role in this outbreak of reasonableness. Meanwhile, the first real debtor revolt against austerity is off to a decent start, even if nobody believes it. What’s the Greek for “Keep calm and carry on”?
