Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Or take the time and read some very old documented evidence available at a library near you= but you may need to stay there awhile on microfiche. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Janssen Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 4:39 PM To: P2P Foundation mailing list Subject: Re: [P2P-F] Fw: Info On Sun, Oct 23, 2011 at 10:32 AM, Natalie Golovin <10natalie(a)cox.net> wrote: > The European Tribes treated the Natives no worse than they treated each > other. Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. interesting thread - thanks to all personal note - I hope your actions can evolve towards , or include awareness and support for : *" uncommodified, unmanaged, and uncurricularized "* http://p2pfoundation.net/Against_the_Professional_Cooptation_of_Community hence using institutions for de-institutionalization : non monetized, self organized ( and open sourced ), non credentialized. potentially some examples, in addition to informal learning we experience in our daily lives http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barefoot_College http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qqqVwM6bMM and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimally_invasive_education such as ( when using ICT ) http://www.hole-in-the-wall.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps8MwyJH8Zo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ks8D3WE-PbM Personally, I am interested in converging tribes, into ( semi ? ) neo nomadic tribes, even if only for a specific time and specific space, for socially and environmentally regenerative participatory action research http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Participatory_action_research I spent years hitch hiking, money-less, or almost money-less, and realize a home / base to return to is important. I hope the following space will become a reality, and a starting point for leveraging such approaches http://sharewiki.org/en/Antwerp_Collective I wish to encourage such approaches, or find ways to find overlap, with cooperative institutions, and enable scalability by supporting modular and open source parametric nomadic solutions and infrastructures : http://sharewiki.org/en/Spime_Housing and rapidly spread out such approach in most of the world, regardless of land ownership, money, or credentials, and in support of emergent collective intelligence and the commons. Fwd: A Miracle Year for UFG!

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: The Urban Farming Guys <jason(a)theurbanfarmingguys.com> Date: Mon, Dec 30, 2013 at 11:02 PM Subject: A Miracle Year for UFG! To: Michel <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> 2013 beyond our hopes and dreams! View this email in your browser<http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=7757f69a701cb06529ae119c4&id=9076619056…> Unsubscribe<http://TheUrbanFarmingGuys.us5.list-manage.com/unsubscribe?u=7757f69a701cb0…> [image: image not displayed :( Please display images] Wow! We want to thank everyone for the amazing year of 2013. In 2013 we easily saw a *half million dollars* worth of mission progress, a 20 fold return on our resources this year! Your support helped to bring about transformation to one of the most blighted inner-city zip codes in the US into a now budding and soon to be thriving community. There is still a long journey ahead, but you will be amazed at what we accomplished together just this last year running on pure hope, bartered materials, and an army of volunteer help. See the story below and throw a victory fist in the air with us. [image: Solar Array 25 KW! Must see this image!] In 2013 we are now running on Solar Power! 90 - 120% of the power for our community gardens, CSA farm, fish hatchery, community workshop, interns bunkhouse, and office are powered by this 25kW system, We are now selling power back to the grid. Even better - this came at Zero Cost to UFG and provides an average value of $275 per month. [image: Our 2013 Interns: Mug Shot images] This year we launched our internship to over 20 beautiful people from 4 different countries. Our program has attracted everyone from a surgeon in Manhattan, to an anthropologist, and a refugee desiring to return to his homeland with the skills to begin rebuilding. This is an amazing ongoing experience. The culture here has been infused with a wonderful pool of talent and mission mindedness that has caused everyone involved to grow toward their destiny. We have also gained many new partners from within the Lykins community. [image: CSA Gardens image] We built and installed over 100 raised bed gardens in 2013. All without cash. We bartered our worm castings for soil and salvaged wood. We finished this lot within 2 weeks of purchasing it, a massive volunteer undertaking of love. It was 6 ft deep with weeds and trees when we obtained it. This project alone would have exceeded our entire cash inflow for the year if we would have hired it out. [image: Mobile Farmers market image.] We got this cargo truck up to par and have begun building a future mobile farmers market to help bring healthy food access to the urban core. We are now set up to accept food stamps to make healthy produce even more accessible to the existing food desert in the inner city. [image: You are missing out on this image!!!] Internship to ownership! This month we successfully wrote a grant on behalf of one of our long term interns to obtain ownership of this house and $20,000 to fix it up! This house is dead center to the 13 vacant lots we own and will be building community gardens on. This is all part of our Apprenticeship to Ownership program. We will deed some of these lots over to successful interns to help them start their own urban farms. [image: image crying :'(] We purchased 13 new lots in 2013 and got to work building value in the urban core. [image: 3000 Gallon Water Catchment !! image] Water! We built a massive rain collector that will catch over 45,000 gallons of rain each year for the community gardens. It catches over 1000 gallons for every inch of rain. Water flows down into the gutters we installed under the solar panels, then down into a sump tank and back up into 3000 gallons worth of holding tanks raised so they will give pressure coming back out to 3000 feet of drip systems in the community gardens and CSA gardens. Our vegetables will be happy for rain water. [image: Mexico barrelponics image you need to see] We built an Aquaponic fish farm at a beautiful orphanage in Mexico. Our team was able to raise their own funds individually to come and help. All of the project materials were funded by friends of the orphanage partnering with our project. [image: black gold] Here is a week's harvest (2000 lbs) of worm castings being shipped from our worm farm in our bat cave. This year we launched our first retail worm casting sales and sold out of our first product run in one day. We will soon have this fine organic fertilizer available online to help fundraise for our mission. [image: baby fish image] We hatched and sold thousands of Tilapia fingerlings to help fund our non profit's mission from within. By funding from within we are able to accomplish more, we sustain the long haul, we have real world knowledge to offer, and we are creating jobs... one of the most solid strategies for actually helping people!!!! [image: YESSSSS! image here] We planted 1000 tulips along 12th street this fall in an effort to bring a sense of hope and pride to the neighborhood we are working in. [image: its too bad you cant see this picture here :(] And finally in 2013 we did 1000 little things to invest into the infrastructure of the urban core including building a website for Lykins Neighborhood and keeping the after school art program going strong. We have hosted hundreds of neighbors and street people for community dinners at our base in many wonderful times of community building. We tripled attendance at our neighborhood meetings. And we have built a strong core of leadership on the ground among residents. It has become unstoppable. 2014 Outlook As of right now our 2014 budget is completely unfunded with no sign of help. Don't worry, this is nothing new to us. We have yet to be sponsored or receive any grants of our own from the many we continue to write thus far. We have 100% win record for grants we write for others, and 100% loss record for grants we write for UFG. Most organizations would be forced to shut down at this point. We will march on. We have invested our entire lives into building up the youth, the poor and the next generation. Like guerillas we will find a way to accomplish our mission even if we must fund it with the sunlight, dirt and rain around us. It has been a miracle this far. We are thankful for our faithful monthly supporters that we can count on giving about $500 cumulative per month. This is just about enough to keep the websites paid up and our email list managed. We were overjoyed to have some of our projects funded this last year by many one time small $5 and $10 donations. But the truth is, so much opportunity is being left behind in human potential due to a lack of resources. For every 20 full time volunteers that want to join us, we have to turn 18 away because we have a lack of financial resources, materials, computers, full time leadership etc. There is work to be done, raw resources to be cultivated, skills schools to be built, kids to be mentored, businesses to be formed, a village to be cultivated out of the rubble. Please call your friends in high places and tell them that we exist! *Please consider making a donation. <http://TheUrbanFarmingGuys.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7757f69a701cb0…>* The Urban Farming Guys is a non profit public charity 501c3 that exists to help build sustainable communities in the most difficult places on earth. Huge Matching Gift! To kick of the start of the year. The same person who gave us a matching donation in July has again offered to donate up to $7,000 matched by January 15th. YAY! So for every dollar you give, he will make it $2. If we can collectively raise $7000, he will make it $14,000. Help us begin to make 2014 the first year that our budget is funded. We need $80,000 this year to effectively organize and utilize the raw resources and opportunity around us to our most effective potential. Without your help, we will be leaving behind approximately a million dollars worth of value and ability to inspire and empower more good in 2014. *Please consider making a donation. <http://TheUrbanFarmingGuys.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7757f69a701cb0…>*The Urban Farming Guys is a non profit public charity 501c3 Big thanks to our top supporters this last year. an assessment of the p2p-foundation in 2013
by Michel Bauwens 29 Dec '13

29 Dec '13

as requested by kevin, this will be posted on the blog: Looking Back on P2P in 2013 Kevin Flanagan has asked me to write two articles, one that reviews p2p developments in 2013, and one that looks forward to 2014. Here is the first part of a personal and impressionistic interpretation. I like to describe the development of p2p ideas and practices and the P2P Foundation as one of the expressions of this, in the following broad timeline. The time period before 2008 was a period of anticipation, in which the p2p structures and practices were spreading amongst social movements, local groups, but in a context of emergence and marginality. During my already frequent lectures that started in late 2005, most people were presuming that my talks were about the future, when in fact they were not, they were already describing concepts, practices and ideas of pioneering social groups, but the mainstream audiences were still mostly blind to this. But the systemic crisis of neoliberal capitalism in 2008 clearly changed that, it was if the sky was clearing and suddenly, people were looking for answers and p2p was seen as one of the potential alternatives. We moved from a period of TINA, 'There Is No Alternatives”, to a period of TAPAS, “There are Plenty of Alternatives”. But after 2008, people not only searched for intellectual answers but also started practicing p2p alternative mechanisms more massively. Peer production moved to the physical sphere, with rapidly emerging open hardware; massive social movements emerged, such as in the Middle East, Occupy and 15M , which largely used p2p mechanisms in their self-organisation, and the local resilience movement literally exploded, with an exponential rise in local food initiatives, transition town groups, alternative currencies and more. It was also the birth of the sharing economy movement and a clear revitalisation of the ethical economy took place, such as a revival of cooperativism, the social and solidarity economies, and a large move to progressive governments in for example Latin America. Thus by 2012, there was a clear change in my experience. If previously I would spend 10 days in say Melbourne for 3 lectures; by 2012, I would spend 10 days in the same place but with 20 engagements, and most of the people and groups who invited me were already practicing to some level, p2p principles. I am thinking of coworking centers, makerspaces and the like. Also literally everyone I met seemed to already know the P2P Foundation, as a significant 'collective intellectual' of the emergent movement. Visits to our online resource base, such as our wiki, jumped 400% in a single year. 2013 was a year for consolidation of the emergent p2p movement. I witnessed this for example by attending the Economics and the Commons conference in May 2013 in Berlin, which I co-organized with my colleagues of the Commons Strategies Group, i.e. David Bollier and Silke Helfrich. The gathering had a level of maturity which was not comparable to the previous conference in that series in 2010. By 2013, everyone 'got' the Commons in one way or another, and was intersted not just in mere dialogue, but in strategizing for social change. A lecture tour in western europe lasted 3 months, and included innovative events such as the Commons Festival in Crete, which brought together players from across the commons spectrum. Local P2P-F groups, such as those in Greece and Brazil, got very active, creating research projects of even 2 physical p2p labs such as in Athens and Ionnanina. There were also some less positive developments. One is the cooptation of the p2p concept by mere marketplaces. In places like the Netherlands for example, it seems an almost exclusive interpretation that p2p is not about constructing commons, but about creating marketplaces for supply and demand to meet. Significantly, in a presentation about the meaning of the sharing economy by Rachel Botsman, commons-oriented peer production is not even mentioned. But there is also a counter-reaction to this neoliberalization of the sharing economy, with people like Neal Gorenflo, Janelle Orsi, Simone Cicero and others arguing for another side of the coin, i.e. a more cooperative interpretation of peer to peer, the commons, and the sharing economy. It is of course not a question of being opposed to enterpreneurs and their 'sharing' projects, but of being opposed to the reduction of p2p to market activities. Perhaps because our work is getting more noticed and popular, we also started encountering more negative attention in 2013. For example, we discovered that one of our close cooperators was forging communications, took control of my personal mailbox, and filtered communication with our partners and associates, creating not just personal damage and hurt, but also financial distress. After the manipulation were discovered, our income tripled in a few weeks. We still don't know, and don't hav the means to know, whether such intervention was the result of a personal pathology, or a third party driven sabotage. Then, we were targeted by a disinformation campaign orchestrated through Anonymous twitter accounts. The good news is that we survived both, and that it actually strengthened our internal organisation. We now have a much stronger and active internal team, which nearly doubled in size in one year, with much more seriousness and commitment than before. The P2P Foundation has long been a network with an important central node, but it may yet become a real human organisation that can actually intervene on the ground. Intellectually speaking, though 2013 was too busy for in-depth theoretical pursuits, we do believe we made some important breakthroughs. For example, our development of four future p2p scenarios , which was very popular as the closing keynote for the Ouishare fest. Our proposition for a global coalition for the commons, discussed amongst political movements in places as different as Poland and Greece. Our proposition for local civic alliances for the commons and Chambers of the Commons, which is being prefigured in activities in places such as Crete and France. Thus we believe that we now have a much more cogent transition strategy. An important development was the writing of a book of conversations, with Jean Lievens, on the peer to peer transition in the Dutch language. We got intensive coverage not just in the major newspapers and magazines in the Flanders, but also on radio and television, and the book, which will gets its third printing in January, is well on it is way to become a national bestseller. Hence our fervent hope to find publishers to translate it to other languages in 2014. In our next installment, we will discuss our strategic priority around open cooperativism, the transition project in Ecuador, and other thoughts about what is coming in 2014. The seeds for these projects were prepared in 2013, but their realisation will take place next year. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Hi Wolfgang, Thank you for sharing your article<http://www.scribd.com/doc/49712621/Making-Place-for-Abundance>- it overlaps with approaches I like to take. I see a number of potentially overlapping and emergent "layers". I like to hear from other people's dreams or personal experiences. I see the potential for an understanding of distribution / aggregation layers, mutually empowering each other in an emergent way, building up critical diversity for further emergence, resilience, and ( ideally ? ) viable systems. I ll be happy to map out our non linear understanding. ( a mapping tool where we can export our data ? ) *// in advance, apologies to Silke - this will be a long post with a lot of links //* Some layers I experiment(ed) with , followed by a few projects. I want to talk about Nomadism, as it embodies imho an understanding of distributed systems - understanding I wish to use even when not moving ( geographically ). I see *layers of distribution and aggregation mutually empowering each other in an emergent way.* Short, medium and long term approaches , and resilience through their overlap, can also be taken into account. I want to bring forward potentials for synergies and emergence ( based on "critical diversity" ? ), and using Integral City<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integral_City>and some research ( if one can call this research ? ) I did or am doing, to compare or apply it to. /// *- Nomadism :* *- it can imho be translated into the experience many more have, for example at a city scale , or also via "seminar hopping" lifestyles , movie production lifestyles, etc -* talking from personal experience of a type of nomadism based on a low ( monetary ) threshold ( hitch hiking ). I would aim at experiencing a flow of temporary autonomous zones ( often events ), hitch hiking from the one to another, taking into consideration a "logistics of options" to direct myself across europe. ( moving east or west, north or south, depending on how events may seem to empower more options for intentional convergence and supporting needs at later stages ) I am glad Wolfgang mentioned "non places". Much of the time was spent crossing "non places", moving towards aggregators where, for a moment, some shared "warmth" could be experienced. Nomadism ( especially moneyless , or almost moneyless ) , in my view, embodies *an experienced understanding of a distributed system of distributed systems* : hitch hiking as intentional distributed system - used as a layer to facilitate access to - ... hospitality as a distributed system - being hosted for a limited amount of time - ... which can empower meeting people, which itself can lead to events , to shared learning, distributed information networks, etc ... each of these potentially empowering distributed intentional "tribes". Such social capital constantly being worked on - if not, the energy imho dissipates over time. Such understanding of nomadism ( / of distributed approaches ) can be applied within more specific geographical environments, such as a particular city itself. I guess others wrote about this ... ( Negri, Hardt, ... ) I personally like the contents of this site : http://nomadology.com/ It is important , imho, to reduce "empty places" and time ... as to make it viable. Focusing on places where there is a higher density and diversity of mutually empowering potentials, that can , even if one uses a temporary autonomous approach, further feed other processes and enable a continuity of flow. This is some of my shared experience of too much "spreading out" : http://sharewiki.org/en/Beyond_Road_Burn_Out http://hitchwiki.org/en/Aimless_trajectory Convergence may be possible in cities - yet the cost of space , in monetary terms, or of securing access to space ( if one squats ) is often very high, itself leading people to allocate their time to service such monetary cost, reducing availability, and increasing the potential for "empty places" ... or "empty social places", as people are "too busy" ... Finding distributed approaches to use such spaces and generate spaces on top of existing infrastructure , as to converge social networks / aggregate, may be one approach. Narratives imho also play a central role in such flows of aggregation. Time, too, plays a role. High turnovers in certain cities may not enable long term continuity or development of projects, unless a combination between longer term residents and short term residents can be found. Planning is not always possible when there is such constant reshuffling - hence the potential for stigmergic information tools to manage logistics of options and generate flow and emergent collective intelligence. /// As it requires constant work on social networks, but also as I sense there is a need to create reference points for oneself to return to, aggregators which can overlap as to enable continuity , rather then leaving empty spaces of nothingness, after 5 years on the road I needed to find solutions for places of unconditional return. A tribe , even if it morphs, yet enables shared intention, can be such "home" - even if and when it moves in space. Sometimes families can represent such form of tribe, yet in western societies , imho, families end up being instrumentalized in favor of dominant socio-cultural narratives. In some cases, people like me who wish to generate alternative / less coercive narratives may end up marginalized from both society and family. Underlying logic that I notice from people in mainstream narratives being : "if I "have" to do this, why would s/he not , hence I can not support him, as it would furthermore requestion my own sacrifices over time to survive in this system". Not all adopt such stance - and it is interesting to understand what processes or contexts opens people up ... // I see a need for overlap in terms of time frameworks. At casarobino ( a nomadbase.org which hosted over 1000 people in a small flat over a 3 year time framework ), I noticed how overlap between short term ( a night or two ), medium term ( a few days to a week ), and longer term ( a few weeks ? ) residents enabled transfer of self organized cultures and information needed for such self organization, and how it enabled some form of fluidity in terms of internal social dynamics. Furthermore, the casa seemed to serve an aggregation role, enabling a place of return on a longer time framework, leading to individuals coming back to the space, feeding and at the same time maintaining what imho looked like intentional subcultures enabling its self organization. ( may be interesting to study this further in depth : the role of such aggregators, and intentions that may serve as shared engagment and underlying social contracts ) /// For the moment, debt seems to be one of the powerful forces leading people to be prepared to share engagement / generate social contracts. ( often generating more centralized control and artificial scarcity ? ) To free ourselves from ( monopolistic and hierarchical ) debt information systems of control, I sense we need to generate alternative distributed engagement tools. Reification is imho risky business ( in terms of control - see this article<http://www.academia.edu/4498786/How_does_reification_ensure_our_wilful_subo…> ) , yet worth experimenting in a distributed form - to facilitate temporary aggregation , as stigmergic tools ? ( hence mentioning the netention research, which also includes understanding regarding Linked Data, ... ) Yet, indeed, "places" can be aggregators. I see the risk of "institutionalization" of places ( and centralized control ) Potentially, such institutionalization of spaces can be ok as long as networkes are not enclosed within it, and that such networks can access sufficient diversity, as to never depend on any one source ... yet be able to build on top of institutionalized infrastructure, although I do not see this as a solution. Ideally, one would aim at enabling distributed forms of ( temporary ) infrastructure away from institutional influence and conditions. In some cases, there may be potential to support a distributed commons through institutional support, playing on the strategic interests of specific institutions in doing so - yet rarely does this seem to come, imho, without a cost / conditions. Mapping externalities can be a potential of tools such as suggested by netention research - including practices visualizing open value networks ? /// Here is some research ( draft ) I did as to attempt such approach in Leipzig. http://sharewiki.org/en/Leipzig_project The idea being to benefit from existing infrastructure, at a lower cost ( in terms of debt ), and creating a sufficiently great diversity and amount of individual projects, as to build distributed systems on top of the proposal of the usership of a living space Prices in Leipzig now seem to have increased - so I needed to change approach. /// Using the potential for FabLabs / local small scale manufacturing based on open source research and development, I imagine using vacant spaces ( in urban or countryside environments ) to build up temporary housing. Eric H. used the terms "pop up villages" and "furnitecture" ( portemanteau for furniture and architecture ) see : http://sharewiki.org/en/Spime_Housing It can include approaches such as wikihouse ( http://www.wikihouse.cc/ ) , ... Ideally, I imagine modular and parametric approaches ( I noticed some designer and architect active on Edgeryder forums think so too ) Some cities, such as Brussels, see imho high turnovers ( 15 to 20 percent of its population annually ? ). There is a lack of housing, prices are rising as population increases, etc In such kind of context, I also see the potential for some of the approaches expressed earlier on , using the potential of massive amounts of vacant space ( for example : over 2 million square meters of empty office space ) to generate temporary contracts where temporary structures ( furnitecture / urban pop up villages ) can be set up, as some form of temporary living. For example in Brussels : http://www.annedoloresmarcelis.com/index.php?/camping-town/ Various subcultures can / are converging and overlapping, with each having high turnovers, or people keeping a base while living nomadic lifestyles - for example dancer networks, theatre networks, but also all kinds of students, people doing internships, people on short term contracts for international institutions or businesses, etc The environment itself can generate new layers and opportunities. Beyond reducing costs / increasing quality of life with limited monetary income via a sharing economy approach, it can be about generating conviviality , liberating time by reducing costs, and increasing potential for interactions around shared intentions or interests. Freed time opens up potential for participatory action research and learning. Approaches that combine subcultures and generations can also be adopted. It can be an evolution from the "co-living" approaches which have permeated into many urban living / social practices. In effect, such types of temporary spaces generating defacto "free schools", some of them leading to "project incubation" Also see : http://opendoor.io/ --> projects /// I wanted to generate such spaces for a number of years, yet I realize that a more specific and easily understood narrative is needed to enable shared intentional engagement. A narrative for a "school" can be an example of a way to bootstrap such engagement. Incubators , coworking spaces , or even, in the countryside, permaculture or construction / renovation projects can all be narratives attracting people for a certain period of time. Yet often there needs to be a "spark", and the threshold for such spark often requires a minimum of resources ... which itself already requires engagement. Although I shared this link earlier on , also see : http://emergentbydesign.com/2012/01/08/93-superhero-schools-collaboratories… /// Convergences such as http://bwcd.vdcn.org/doku.php seem to already be a filter for those ready to engage in setting such prototypes... hopefully building on the experience of past "communes", but hopefully also enabling neo nomadic / distributed overlap, as explained in this mail. The system is supposed to improve the conditions of the poor, thus making inequalities acceptable. It is no longer the case. It is supposed to produce greater security. It is no longer the case. It is supposed to sustain democracy. It is no longer the case. All the classic positive justifications are gone. Moral arguments are all that is left: working is good, one has to pay one’s debts – and there is no other way. We have reached a point where these two arguments are leading to the system’s self-destruction. The ship is sinking because of an overload of work and debt." *( found via Connor T. )* -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

That work is now growing, reflecting a "coming of age" for a new economics that considers what is just and equitable for all Earth's citizens while caring for our shared ecosystem. 2013 was a great year for the Schumacher Center, with exceptional lecture events, remarkable media attention to our BerkShares program, and the launch of several initiatives reconsidering how land is accessed. For 2014 we will continue this strong growth by expanding existing programs, including the introduction of a model loan program in BerkShares, the convening of an international conference titled "Sharing the Commons," and the rollout of Community Supported Industry (CSI), which is an expansion of the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) concept. To achieve all of this we are partnering with foundations and sister organizations, highlighting the successful programs and resources that together form the building blocks of a new economy. Staff and Board of Directors welcome your generous support for 2014 programming. Your tax-deductible contribution can be made online<http://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d11303…>or by sending a check to Schumacher Center for a New Economics, 140 Jug End Road, Great Barrington, MA 01230 USA. Warm wishes for the winter season from all of us, Susan Witt, Alice Maggio, Susan Ingersoll, and Hilary Dennis Board of Directors: Peter Barnes, Mary Berry, Severine von Tscharner Fleming, Hildegarde Hannum, Dan Levinson, Anne MacDonald, Jerry Mander, Gordon Thorne, Greg Watson, and Judy Wicks. Advisory Board: Wendell Berry, Tanya Berry, Merrian Goggio Borgeson, Eric Harris-Braun, and Otto Scharmer. *Additional details of what's ahead for 2014* *BerkShares: *B$ continues to receive almost weekly national or international media attention. Under the leadership of the Schumacher Center's Alice Maggio, who is working with a local non-profit board of directors, B$ presents a transparent, regionally based alternative to troubled national currencies. A 380,000 Euro grant from the DOEN Foundation of Amsterdam will support the strengthening of this model community-issued currency and will support the development of the related Community Supported Industry initiative. ( berkshares.org<http://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d11303…>) *Community Supported Industry: *One of the inefficiencies of building diverse regional economies is the time spent creating business plans for the multiple, interrelated small businesses. We are taking a page from the Mondragon bank in the Basque region of Spain to engage citizen "social entrepreneurs" in compiling an online library of business plans, including financial statements, from successful regionally scaled businesses. Our focus is on the basic necessities of food, clothing, shelter, energy, and transportation. See our CSI strategy paper and instructions for submitting business plans. (centerforneweconomics.org<http://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d11303…> ) *Sharing the Commons: *Shaping a new economy that is appropriate for people and planet will take transformation in multiple spheres. The question of how we treat land, water, air, and minerals—our Natural Commons—in a new economy is at the core of this transformation. Should they be commodities traded on the market to the highest bidder, allowing those with ownership to benefit from our common need and common heritage? If not via the market, how might the Commons be allocated? The Winter 2014/2015 conference, "Sharing the Commons," now in the planning stage, will draw on the experience of cultures around the world, including those of indigenous peoples, to suggest methods for fair and sustainable allocation of use. *Agrarian Trust: * Concerned that productive farmland should be transferred to a new generation in a way that is secure, equitable, sustainable, and diverse, our board member Severine von Tscharner Fleming has initiated the Agrarian Trust project modeled on Terre de Liens of France. ( agrariantrust.org<http://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> ) *Organizational Development: * With IRS approval of our status as a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization now in hand, we will expand the board and hire new colleagues who can help us guide the 33-year legacy of the E. F. Schumacher Society through another 33 years as the Schumacher Center for a New Economics. *Collaboration with other Organizations*: A 2014 strategy of the board of directors calls for strengthening the multiple ways we partner with sister initiatives, supporting them and directing attention to their work to bring about economic change regionally, nationally, and internationally. A new economics "speakers bureau" will point out the range of interrelated initiatives needed to transform a failing system and showcase those developing practical solutions. *Kindle/Kobo*: The collection of Annual Schumacher Lectures continues to inspire a new generation with a sense of what can be done by engaged citizens. Available to read on-line<http://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d11303…>at no cost or to listen to at archive.org<http://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…>, the lectures will soon be available in ebook format on both Kindle and Kobo.
