Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. Re: [P2P-F] Elon Musk's bourgeois Mars
by Eric Hunting 30 Sep '15

30 Sep '15

What Musk was describing in this interview is a concept sometimes called 'ballistic terraforming' and which can be achieved in a variety of ways. Musk chose to refer to a method that sounds more realistic to most people; nuclear bombs. The easier and more practical way more commonly proposed is steering small comets or icy objects from the outer solar system into collision with Mars. As inconceivable as that sounds, that's relatively simple through the use of automated spacecraft as 'gravity tugs' to coax planned changes in orbit, though it may take decades to move an object into the desired path. The point of all this is simple; triggering an atmospheric thermal cascade by putting enough water vapor into the atmosphere at once so that, by the greenhouse effect, it raises temperature and causes more water in the Mars crust globally to evaporate into the atmosphere and progressively increases the temperature and atmosphere density to where the surface might be colonized by very hardy plants like lichens--if they can be adapted to tolerate the large amounts of toxic perchlorate salts in the water and soil. In this way enough atmosphere might be built up to where humans can operate on the surface without space suits--though still requiring supplemental oxygen. This 'fast' process is still a process that would take many generations to accomplish, as opposed to the very many centuries pumping synthetic greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere would using the other more commonly suggested method. Realistically, it may take generations of research from the present day before we even know enough about Mars to say whether or not these methods would work and it remains an open question of whether it would be worthwhile given that Mars, lacking an active planetary core, cannot produce its own magnetosphere to help hold an atmosphere sustainably--which is why it lost it's formerly dense atmosphere in the first place. And, of course, we don't even know if long term living under Mars' reduced gravity is safe or if a clinical solution to that problem is possible. By the time any of that matters, the technology proposed may be made completely moot by nanotechnology and the 'human race' may be long supplanted by transhumans who would need none of these elaborate machinations to live in that environment. So, basically, the author of this piece, triggered by the 'N word', is complaining about something that is, at best, pure speculation if not retrofuturist SciFi. What personally annoys me is the playing to the old argument of; "why should we go to space just to export our terrestrial madness?" This is rooted in a notion that the human race is ultimately a mistake that needs to be contained, that all works of man are inherently profane, and that we need to 'grow up' more and get our terrestrial house in order to be worthy of doing things in the sacrosanct heavenly realms beyond Earth. It never occurs to proponents of this notion that the act of going to space might be a necessary part of that process of growing up. That we might need the challenge of the space environment to ultimately learn the craft of sustainability because Mother Earth molly-coddles us with a too-benign environment that make its too easy to cheat. That we might need frontiers on which to experiment in new ways of life when every single part of the Old World is now owned and ruled-over by someone with vested interests in doing things old ways. There is a fundamental lack of understanding of the concept of space settlement here which relates to preconceptions about space activity and its relationship to the military industrial complex and exploitation for nationalist prestige. It is assumed to be some expression of militaristic or corporatist culture--understandable given that the outpost architecture commonly illustrated is always militaristic in character. But in practice every plausible space settlement must--of necessity--be a cohabitation eco-village seeking an ideal sustainability. (on pain of death) The ultimate space settler will not see themselves as a 'conqueror' of space but a gardener of the universe and an experimenter in alternative lifestyle. The garden is the essential functional and cultural core of any truly plausible space settlement concept. The bottom-line of space development is that learning to live in space means learning to go from dirt, rocks, and sunlight to a sustainable middle-class standard of living using tools and systems on the scale of home appliances--and there is nothing about life on Earth and the way civilization here works that such capability will not radically change. If one wished to make a valid argument here, argue about the largely disingenuous and retrofuturist nature of contemporary proposals for so-called space settlement coming from governments who are, ultimately, not in the business of inventing new places for people to go and not pay taxes and from corporations who are fully aware that the only sustainable ROI from space not based on exploiting government bankrolls cannot realize that ROI in banks on Earth but only in infrastructure out there. Complain about the root corruption of priorities in national space agencies that must pander to the vanities of opposing political interests to survive as venues for pork-barrel politics. Complain about the continued elitism and militarism of the contemporary space development vision when the technology emerging and already at hand points to a near future where the settlement of any body in space is soon to become a community project akin to Linux. This sounds like it would have been a lot of fun. I wonder if there was any mention of, or visits to, the T House villages in Ubud Bali Indonesia. ( http://www.balithouse.com/ ) For some years there was a company in California called Tony's T-Houses founded by designer Tony Gwilliam that made Asian-style prefab back yard pavilions of a uniquely simple practical design. They were popular enough that Tony was able to go on to pursuing applying this minimalist approach to full scale homes and he moved to Bali to develop the Bali-T House; a prefab house kit based on nail-less ironwood construction and unique Indonesian craftsmanship. It helped inspire a bit of a craze in export Indonesian kit housing, though most of that was focused on the more elaborately carved traditional architecture popular for guest houses and resort cottages. I was long very interest in these Bali-T houses because of the powerful modular system Tony employed and the non-toxic nature of the ironwood, which is so dense it simply can't be adulterated by paint and other potentially toxic finishes and treatments. But, unfortunately they never really caught on as kit homes in the western world because they were too well adapted to the mild Indonesian climate and couldn't work without additional shelter in northern climates. So, eventually, Tony's company gave up on selling the kits to focus on crafting vacation villages using them in Ubud. But there's still great potential in the building system for these clever and elegant little houses, particularly today with the rise of the Tiny House movement. N'hésitez pas à diffuser l'information autour de vous, largement ! very important initiative on sustainable manufacturing ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: jnm <jnm(a)rom.fr> Date: Wed, Sep 30, 2015 at 4:40 AM Subject: Re: [lfowhattheflok] Quelques liens en vrac, Transformaking To: lfowhattheflok(a)zinclafriche.org Merci Jérôme. ----------------------------------- Good afternoon, Thank you for your presence here, and thanks to the organisers of this important moment. I am Jean Noël Montagné, I am the founder of a hackerspace in Nice, france, called Nicelab, " Open Laboratory of Nice". I started collaborations with HONF foundation Indonesia twelve years ago. I was very happy last year, when HONF team invited me for brainstorming on the future of making and DIY spirit, when Gustav Hariman, from Bandung hackerspace, invented the word Transformaking/Transformakers. For me, this word are an opportunity to impulse a political perspective in the Makers scene in rich countries. *Makers* (picture one, objects from fablab) In France, most of the Makers are hobbyists, technolovers, geeks. They create for fun, for local glory and some, for business. But few of them are makers for social or political goals. Most of the objects created in fablabs and makerspaces in the last years are useless regarding the urgent problems of the planet. Because the planet is on fire. Climate crisis. Energy crisis. Demography crisis. Water crisis. Metals crisis. Financial cris. Education crisis, even crisis of mental health because of the abuse of digital communication. ;-) But stop ! it's enough ! Come back to transformaking, No-one wants to ear this crude reality ! *No lessons from the past* (picture two : garbage in nature) And that's the problem: historians studying the extinction of old civilisations in the last millinaries have discovered that leaders and populations perfectly knew the serious problems of their time but they have ignored the scientific advices and all indicators turning to red, until the end. We are doing exactly the same and we don't have a lot of time to act. We must transform all sectors of the society before the conjunction of some important crisis, and transformakers will help us to do it. *Interdependency* (picture 3 : boat and trucks) In the global village, industry is totaly dependant of flux, networks of raw materials, energy, goods, tools, components, distribution and transportation. Any failure on one spot can disturb or stop all the chain, from extraction of raw materials to distribution of goods. This interdependency is an enormous fragility in the context of the coming crisis, and transformakers can help us to break it. * Resilient society* ( picture 4= reversed world map) We have all noticed that we can't really count on our political systems to find efficient solutions, we should count on ourselves. We, citizens, can buid resilient communities, based on small structures, driven by direct democracy, and based on big citizenship networking. We have the digital tools and the network to do it. Transformakers have a key role in this transition from globalisation to resilience Let's have a deeper look in this crisis instead of being blind to reality. If we are here in Jogyakarta, it's because we have understood what is coming, and how Transformaking can help us. The first crisis to observe with the glasses of transformaking is climate crisis. * **Climate crisis *( picture 5 :UN meeting Paris announce) -In december in France, during the UN conference about climate change, COP21, a hundred presidents and 25 000 leaders and technocrates will brainstorm on how to impose radical solutions to nations, or not, for limiting the rise of the global temperature to 2 degrees more. For me, it's an announced fail. A fail because the goals of the meeting started in a wrong direction. Accepting 2 degrees more, in average, on the planet, is accepting violent transformations of the climate: hurricanes, floods, dryness, wildfires, pollination problems, soil erosion, insect, animals and vegetal invasions, viruses emergence, and so on, that will create a giant loose of biodiversity, massive extinction of species in earth and ocean during years. Look at what's happening with just a half degree more in the last fourty years, we see important effects on the poles, on the climatology, on water storage, on agriculture, on the acidity of ocean. Picture 6 (refugees panel in US/Mexico border) So 2 degrees more will create huge environemental and social disorders, unstability everywhere, wars, starvations. Hundred millions of refugees could have to move, but move where ?. The management of this mass of refugees can completely dismantle the geopolitic equilibrium and will deeply affect all the planet. A new era of chaos, but a opportunity for changing radically the system in good directions. This meeting will be a fail, because the richest countries don't want to change their way of life in the direction of degrowth, wich is the only realist solution. And because developing countries with a big growth, like in Asia, South America or Africa for example, don't want to stop this mad race to personal enrichment. Look. This is a picture taken here in a street of Jogjakarta Picture 7 ( Motorcycling in Jogja ) : Can you imagine what can happen, in terms of energy, in terms of circulation, in terms of urbanity, in terms of pollution, in terms of fluidity of a city and merchandise transport if all this people earn enough money to buy a car for rainy days ? How transformakers can help in the context of climate crisis ? By helping us to change the scale from globalization to small resilient networked communities. By helping us to rebuild real democracy. By helping us redefine our urbanisation, our usage of the lands. By helping us to rebuild our social organisation around knowledge networks. *Energy crisis* ( picture 8: old print of solar energy system 19th century) Second crisis affecting the world is energy crisis: all our societies and economies are totally dependent on oil: the actual madness of the low prices must not mask that conventional Oil had a production peak few years ago. We live now in the illusion of infinite Unconventional oil and shale gas, but this new prosperity will have a end. And it will not be possible to drill and destroy all our lands and groundwater everywhere and continue to produce greenhouse gas. The planet has a limited quantity of fossil energy in the ground, and we are reaching the limits in one or two generations, our children. Coal will stay a durable low cost solution for many countries, increasing the climate chaos. The actual very low cost of oil is a unique opportunity to invest in renewable energies, but few people, few nations have understood that. ( New Zealand, Denmark, Bhoutan, etc) We imagine how Transformakers can help in the context of energy crisis and interdependency: in the same direction of autonomy and solidarity. Changing the scale again. We must harvest clean energy, renewable energy everywhere, and share it. Hackers and Transformakers have a lot of solutions. *Ressources crisis* (picture 9 : children extracting minerals, children extracting their brain on a tablet) The third big crisis, coming at the same time, is a the crisis of ressources: pure water is missing everywhere because of very bad managements, but the most important resource crisis will come with metals: here is the previsional calendar about the peak of production of metals. Source from one famous elit engineer shcool in france Ecole Centrale: Picture 10, crisis of metals Peak of metals= huge price increase terbium, Hafnium, Antimony ==> crisis 2020/2025 (batteries) Palladium, Gold , Indium, Zinc ==> crisis 2023/2027 ( computers, electronics) Stain, Silver, Nickel ==> crisis 2028/2033 ( food industry, chemistry, metallurgy) Lead ==> crisis 2030/2035 ( batteries) Copper, tantalum ==> crisis 2035/2040 ( electricity, electronics) uranium, platinium ==> crisis 2060 ( nuclear energy, aerospace, chemistry) iron ==> crisis 2080 Transformakers must help us to redefine our materials strategies our industrial strategies. How to go from globalization of the production of very bad quality goods, to small autonomous production of very solid tools and productions ? How to organise a clever recycling of all raw materials ? how to change the scale in the direction of self-democratic management, citizen industry, is again the problem to solve. And transformakers have a lot of solutions. *Economy crisis* ( picture 11 : surfer on garbage ) No lessons have been taken from the 2008 crash. Fragility of the economy grows with technological improvments in high frequency trading. 95% of daily market transactions does not involve goods, but only speculation. The debts of many countries are deeper every day, and those debts places the political teams under the control of big banks, big monetary regulators driven by banks, and under the control of big companies wich doesnt care about common goods. This provoke also a crisis of democracy, of citizenship, Hackers and transformakers have always worked on the evolution of money. Digital encrypted currencies, local moneys, networks of exchange, P2P moneys are research we should more focus on very quickly, because solutions exist to be less dependant on banks and markets. *Transformaking* ( picture 12: picture of the earth) Come back to transformaking, and let's have a look to good, positive news, coming from everywhere in the world. We discover today that good social, environemental and financial practices have always existed. Transformaking is the common behaviour in many communities in the world, especially in rural areas: do it yourself, DIWithOthers, Do It Together: people invent tools and technologies adapted to their context, to their pragmatic needs, using few ressources, using local resources, people repair, they recycle, they hack objects, they transmit the knowledge to young generations. In social organisation, all over the world, small communities use solidarity structures, monetary arrangements, like barter systems that can be considered as local money, in a pure peer to peer exchange. The organisation of traditional communities are big lessons for us and this model just need digital tools to be adapted to small communities in modern world. * **Sharing knowledge = open sourcing* ( Picture 13 : badge open source hardware) Transformaking has had also an official arrival in our society, 30 years ago, when hackers started to change the world with the first open source software licences, wich was one of the most powerfull polititcal act of the XXth century. Artists have followed the movement 20 years ago with open source documents and artworks licences, and some makers have taken another important step, ten years ago, with Open Source Hardware licences. This is transformaking: changing the society by offering alternatives containing the values of solidarity and knowledge. Open source technologies, from their concept to production or distribution, open the possibility of a total citizen control on technology. It's now possible to envision human-scale industry, citizen industry, decentralized industry, like our ancestors did before industrial revolution. The ecosystem of transformaking is self-organised around knowledge networks. Any technological process can be created or imporved by transfomakers, because networks of knowledge, network of citizen research, and network of materials and components exists. In the recent years, transformakers have started to design and build very complicated open source machines related to many sectors of industry, and citizen research attacks now topics like high tech medecine, nuclear physics, nanotechnologies or genetics. Patents are living their last twenty years, even in some very protected niche industries, like for example medical equipements: look at this slides: Picture 14 ( websites about open source medecine) One could argue that hackers, transformekrs are not regulated by authorities, certifications, ethics comitees ? and could launch dangerous projects for the society ? No. Because we are network of citizens, we are self organized and the debate is always open in open source technologies. Creation and correction of code follow real democratic rules. How to push more transformaking in society ? ( Picture 15 solar motorbike) -first by protecting internet and the net neutrality. Networking tools are essential for democracy and sharing of the knowledge. Big companies like Facebook and GAFAM are silently killing internet by replacing all software on the client side, by services driven by their data-suckers servers. by supporting hackers and transformakers projects through crowdfundings by opening new medialabs, hackerspaces, makerspaces, and open laboratories, and specialized of them ( biology, health, agriculture, etc) by opening places in cities to dismantle, repair, recycle objects, parts, etc by choosing to use open source software and open source hardware when available by funding P2P and common goods initiatives on all sectors of society ==> P2P foundation -by installing education programms about hacking, about transformaking, *Post capitalist era* (Picture 16 DIY biology analysis kits) Transition from globalisation to new resilient small scale networked societies is necessary and must start now. Transformakers are the first explorers of a post capitalist era. But they don't move alone. Many new citizen organisations, new style political movements are following the movement, but most of them ignore what transformakers are doing. Transformakers have started to transform the society through new behaviours based on local resources, local solidarities, self-management and direct democracy, and based on global communication and global exchange of knowledge. Instead of loosing energy to impulse this vision into standard political systems, it look more efficient to start building initiatives around us, responding to our values, co-existing with the actual system, and if our alternatives are good, if our models takes sense into the society, they will naturally replace the old system, without war, without revolutions. And if it doesnt work, buy this book ! Wells * During the 20th century, space was a key battleground in the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States. By the 1980s, U.S. President Ronald Reagan aimed to fully militarize the stratosphere by developing the Strategic Defense Initiative <http://www.britannica.com/topic/Strategic-Defense-Initiative> (SDI), otherwise known as the “Star Wars” program. Over the years, the broader “Star Wars” program was scrapped, but much of it has been reintroduced in the form of new military technologies <http://motherboard.vice.com/blog/obama-denied-the-death-star-but-he-still-f…> . For instance <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_satellite>, “As of 2013, there are 950 satellites of all types in Earth’s orbit.” In fact, “It is not possible to identify the exact number of these that are military satellites partly due to secrecy and partly due to dual purpose missions such as GPS satellites that serve both civilian and military purposes.” In other words, space is a thoroughly militarized landscape. That being said, the militarization of space is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of what the elites have in mind for the solar system and humanity’s collective future. Today, there’s a growing number of high tech billionaires and government agencies <http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2013/03/the-coming-age-of-spa…> who are keen on colonizing space. Without question, today’s high tech visionaries are quickly developing the capabilities necessary for multi-planetary colonization. One of the world’s most respected scientific agencies, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), has an official stance <http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/hqlibrary/pathfinders/colony.htm> on space colonization: One of the major environmental concerns of our time is the increasing consumption of Earth’s resources to sustain our way of life. As more and more nations make the climb up from agricultural to industrial nations, their standard of life will improve, which will mean that more and more people will be competing for the same resources. While NASA spinoffs and other inventions can allow us to be more thrifty with Earth’s resources, we nevertheless must come to grips with the problem that humanity is currently limited to one planet. Undoubtedly, this view is shared by a wide range of intellectuals, scientists, politicians and business executives. For instance, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, was recently interviewed by Stephen Colbert <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LaXSXjMxWM> on his nightly program, “The Late Show,” where Elon discussed space colonization, reusable rockets and various other high tech developments. Immediately, Colbert asks, “Are you trying to save the world?” Musk responds, “I’m trying to do good things.” Colbert then says, “But you’re trying to do good things, and you’re a billionaire. That seems a little bit like either super hero, or super villain? You have to choose one!” At which point, Musk answers, “I’m trying to do useful things.” After a few minutes of small talk, Colbert inquires about space travel and colonization: “You sincerely think that men and women should go to Mars. Why should we go to Mars? It’s uninhabitable.” Musk nervously laughs and says, “It’s inhospitable, that’s true.” Then, he goes on to suggest that Mars “is a fixer-upper planet.” According to the Tesla Motors CEO, human beings “could transform Mars into an Earth-like planet.” *But how? * “There’s a fast way and a slow way,” according to Musk. “The fast way is to drop thermonuclear bombs on the poles.” The “slow way” is to pump greenhouse gases into Mars’ atmosphere by potentially transporting said gases from the Earth to the red planet. To put differently, Musk wants to recreate the processes of global warming on Mars. In a previous interview conducted in 2014 with Raw Science’s Crystal Dilworth <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfNC3PQIGPg>, Musk proposed the idea that human beings “need to bioengineer new organisms that are suitable for Mars.” He went on to note that, “Humanity has already done this throughout time with selective breeding. But that’s a slow process [evolution] that requires hundreds of years, whereas with bioengineering, you could make it happen much faster and with more precision.” However, the physiological limitations <http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20140506-space-trips-bad-for-your-health> of space travel are only one impediment: the main obstacle delaying space colonization, at least in Musk’s thinking, is the economic costs of such a project: What’s the key thing to establishing a colony on Mars? It’s the cost per unit, per man, the cost per person. I really think we need to get the cost down to half a million dollars per person. And there’s going to be an intersection of people who can afford to go, and people who want to go. Interestingly, Musk’s comments illuminate a fundamental schism, one of the main antagonisms in modern society: economic inequality. Again, if $500,000 (U.S.) is the low-end cost per person to live on Mars, then it’s clear who won’t be living there: the vast majority of the world’s population. After all, who the hell has a half a million dollars? Like many billionaires, Musk has created his empire with public funds, yet virtually zero public input. “SpaceX, Musk’s space-launch venture is dependent on government contracts (it is the recipient of a $1.6 billion contract to resupply the International Space Station),” notes Barry Ritholtz <http://www.bloombergview.com/articles/2014-02-28/elon-musk-visionary-or-ren…>. Furthermore, “His car company, Tesla, received $452 million in government loans; after the company paid them back, Musk suddenly decided that federal investments and/or loans to promote alternative energy was a bad idea.” In other words, Musk’s hypocrisy knows no bounds. His entire high tech empire is the direct result of the public commons: satellites, roads, bridges, electric grids, airports, water sewage facilities, public schools, hospitals, and so forth. Without these elements, Musk’s technological fantasies would be little more than entrepreneurial pipe dreams. Yet, he shuns the public financing of green energy initiatives, unless, of course, they benefit his companies. In the end, the problem isn’t Musk – the problem is the massive governmental and corporate entities that are in power, and produce individuals like Musk. Who in their right mind would drop thermonuclear weapons on Mars? Only the world’s best and brightest. To the regular person, these ideas sound insane, because they are. Human beings have been terrible stewards of the Earth, so why in the world would people think it would be a good idea to reproduce our madness on other planets? If, of course, humanity lived in some sort of harmony, with equitable standards of living and democratic institutions and political mechanisms, space travel and colonization could be seriously discussed. But in a society where the world’s richest five hundred families own more wealth than three billion people, space colonization represents a new frontier of inequality, alienation and segregation. *Vincent Emanuele can be reached at vincent.emanuele333(a)gmail.com <vincent.emanuele333(a)gmail.com>* -- To view previous posts, create a Google account with your current email and log in using gmail to access the archives. https://accounts.google.com/newaccount?hl=en --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups " debate-list(a)fahamu.org" group.
