Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Or take the time and read some very old documented evidence available at a library near you= but you may need to stay there awhile on microfiche. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Janssen Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 4:39 PM To: P2P Foundation mailing list Subject: Re: [P2P-F] Fw: Info On Sun, Oct 23, 2011 at 10:32 AM, Natalie Golovin <10natalie(a)cox.net> wrote: > The European Tribes treated the Natives no worse than they treated each > other. Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. Fwd: [Networkedlabour] Final reminder - State of Power abstracts deadline this Friday (31 Oct)

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Nick Buxton <nick(a)tni.org> Date: Tue, Oct 28, 2014 at 3:32 AM Subject: [Networkedlabour] Final reminder - State of Power abstracts deadline this Friday (31 Oct) To: networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org Dear N-L friends, This is a reminder that the deadline for abstracts in our open call for papers <http://www.tni.org/article/call-papers-tnis-state-power-report> for 2015's *State of Power* report is this Friday - 31 October 2014. - If you have already submitted a piece, thank you - you should hear from the Editorial Panel in the first week of November. - If you are thinking about submitting a piece, please do so. We have some great submissions already but also some gaps and would appreciate your insights. Remember the pieces can be previously published as long as this fit our criteria - our goal this year is simply to feature the best analysis on power and counter-power. At this point, all we need by Friday is a short abstract (max 1000 words) and a biography. The essays come later, assuming their abstract is accepted. - If you have forwarded the call to any lists/contacts or approached anyone to suggest they submit a piece, I would be grateful if you could send them a reminder. Thanks for your help in supporting this important project. Nick On 09/24/2014 06:40 AM, Nick Buxton wrote: Dear Networked Labour friends TNI is issuing an open call for papers for our flagship fourth annual *State of Power* report which is launched around the time of Davos at the end of January 2015. The eight best essays will be compiled into a book, accompanied with infographics. The timing is very tight this year, but TNI is happy to accept reworked versions of existing papers/research so it doesn't have to involve starting from scratch. The full call with details on criteria, process, timelines can be found at http://www.tni.org/article/call-papers-tnis-state-power-report and is also copied below. Please circulate this call to colleagues, university departments, other email lists of activist research networks etc etc. We are particularly open to submissions from young scholar activists and from people based in the Global South. Please cc stateofpower(a)tni.org so I can keep track of where the call is circulated. Thanks for your help Nick Buxton Communications Manager/Editor of State of Power *Call for Papers: State of Power * The Transnational Institute (TNI) in the Netherlands is issuing an open call for essays/short papers for its forthcoming *State of Power* report launched in late January 2015 to coincide with the World Economic Forum in Davos. TNI’s annual *State of Power* reports have, since their launch in 2012, become a must-see reference point for citizens, activists and academics concerned with understanding the nature of power in our globalised world. With a mixture of compelling infographics and insightful essays, *State of Power *has examined dimensions of power (economic, political, cultural, social), exposed the key players who control power, and highlighted movements of counter-power seeking to transform our world. *Understanding power* In 2015, TNI is opening up the call to the public, particularly the progressive academic community, in order to pull in the best analysis on power. TNI is keen to interrogate how power is defined, distributed and functions in our globalised world; to expose the often invisible bodies, corporations and others who exercise influence and control over public policy; to understand the mechanisms by which power is both acquired acquired, used, manipulated and maintained; to understand shifts in power, even amongst elites, that provide openings for social movements; and to highlight the growing sources of counter-power, their potential and contradictions, and how they might be supported in advancing social and environmental justice. *Themes* TNI is particularly interested in essays that relate to areas we most closely work on such as corporate impunity, trade and investment policies, land and agrarian issues, resource grabbing, public services, security and civil liberties, social movements and counter-power (see *http://www.tni.org/listing/work-areas <http://www.tni.org/listing/work-areas>)* However we are ultimately interested in the best analysis (whatever the topic) if it approaches power from the critical perspective held by movements engaged in the struggle for social and environmental justice and political transformation. For an idea of the kind of essays we are interested in, please read the essays featured in State of Power 2014: *http://www.tni.org/briefing/state-power-2014 <http://www.tni.org/briefing/state-power-2014>* As timing is tight, TNI is happy to publish reworked versions of previously published material as well as new unpublished essays. *Process* The call is an open one, but TNI has designed a process to feature what we consider the top eight best essays in the main report. The decision on which papers are featured will be decided by an Editorial Panel made up of the current TNI Fellows, the Director and the Communications Manager. The selection process will follow three stages: 1. In the first stage, researchers will be asked to provide abstracts and a short bio. These can be abstracts based on existing papers. 2. Those whose abstracts are chosen will be asked to submit an essay. The top eight essays will be selected for the book by the Editorial Panel 3. The top eight essays will go through a final round of revisions based on feedback by the Editorial Panel, and subject to final copyedit. We hope to feature one essay as an infographic. Essays that do not make the top eight – and are considered good essays by the Editorial Panel - will be available as downloadable PDFs linked from the main report. * Instructions for submission* *Abstracts must be emailed to **stateofpower(a)tni.org <stateofpower(a)tni.org>** by 31 October 2014. Final essays will be due on 1 December 2014.* - *Abstracts/essays must address the issue of power from a critical perspective, seeking to provide useful knowledge and analysis for movements engaged in the struggle for * - *Abstracts/essays can be based on reworked versions of existing or previously published essays/papers* - *TNI particularly welcomes submissions by young scholars and people based in the Global South. Due to resource constraints though, at this point, we can only accept essays in English and can not pay for submissions. * - *Abstracts must be a maximum of 1000 <1000> words. They do not need to be of continuous prose but must capture the main arguments of the essay and can be expanded outlines. Bios should be 200 words. * - *Essay length: 5000 words. Shorter essays are acceptable, but not longer than 5000 words.* - *Style: TNI has five basic criteria for its research and publications that will also be used to assess the abstracts and essays:* - Credible: Well researched and evidence-based - Accessible: Readable by a broad non-specialist audience (in other words please avoid too much academic jargon) - Additional: Adds depth, new insights or detail to existing knowledge/research - Radical: Tackles the structural roots of critical issues - Propositional: Does not just critique, but also where relevant puts forward just alternatives - *Please include an abstract at the top of the paper (maximum 500 words) and add a short bio (150 words)* - *Provide bibliography at end of essay and/or provide endnotes for references, preferably in APA style. Please do not overdo it on the endnotes – use it mainly for referring to facts/evidence that may be surprising, questioned or challenged.* - *Please send as .doc file (not .docx)* - The decision of the Editorial Panel is final. If your abstract or essay is chosen for the book, please be ready to respond to peer reviews and copyediting comments based on the timeline below. *Timeline* *September Call for abstracts/papers* *31 October Deadline for submission of abstracts* *5 November Notification of chosen abstracts for final essays* *1 December Submission of essays* *5 December Notification of chosen essays* *10 December Comments sent to authors* *2 January Final version submitted by author* 9 January Copyedits sent to author for final check/revision *19 January Launch* -- ----------------------------------------------------- NICK BUXTON Communications Manager m: +1 530 902 3772 e: nick(a)tni.org twitter: @nickbuxton skype: nickbuxton w: www.tni.org ----------------------------------------------------- CONNECT WITH TNI - Sign up to TNI's e-newsletters: http://www.tni.org/subscribe - TNI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TransnationalInstitute - TNI on twitter: https://twitter.com/transinstitute _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://en.wiki.floksociety.org/w/Research_Plan P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

I wanted to send this to you in case you would be interested or if you can think of people who might happen to be going to Chicago who should know about it? Or lists to send over? Let me know if so, or forward away! Otherwise: hope you are well! All the best! Michelle ---- Michelle Wenderlich PhD Student Graduate School of Geography Clark University ***Sorry for cross posting; please forward to possibly interested parties*** AAG 2015 Panel Proposal: Strategic role of the commons for movements and academics? Of late, well-known academics such as David Harvey and Slavoj Žižek have been calling for the reframing of struggles around commons, and social actors have increasingly been using these ideas to fight privatization and neoliberal reforms world wide, including around issues of water, land, electricity, housing, the financial system, and other areas, especially (in the global North) around occupy and climate justice movements. Yet how the commons are conceived and what the term or practices mean for those involved is not widely discussed or agreed upon. The commons literature seems to be split between institutionalist approaches (e.g. Ostrom 1990) and anti-capitalist commons (e.g. de Angelis 2003, Caffentzis and Federici 2014). Some (e.g. Mattei 2011, Observatorio Metropolitano 2011) have emphasized the processual and practice-based characteristics of the commons, and blurring of subject-object relationships that these practices create. Most of the literature sees a clear demarcation and conflictual relationships between the state, capital, and commons. Yet if each member of this trifecta is considered to be continually reproduced by social practices and are increasingly seen as hybrid entities, can these hard and fast divisions remain? Or is there use in conceiving two modes of politics and social practices, represented by the One and multiple or the hierarchical and horizontal (Hardt and Negri 2009, Zibechi 2012, Sitrin 2012), separated by the central importance of autonomy and self-determination? What is actually happening in struggles around the world, do movements see commons as a useful signifier in their work, and if so, how are commons understood and practiced? Some central issues include: Political strategic and theoretical importance of the commons Practices of formation and reproduction of commons Meanings and affective elements of the commons Relations between commons and the state The role of autonomy in commons struggles Transformative potential of the commons? Differences in commons struggles between the global North and South, and across sectors Let’s discuss. I’m looking to see if there are 3-5 more participants interested in this panel, and would ideally like the structure to facilitate as open a discussion as possible, to have this be a space of cross-fertilization of ideas and experiences. I’m also interested in co-organizers. Please email Michelle Wenderlich mwenderlich(a)clarku.edu (Clark University) with a short statement of interest (including research interests and how you might approach some of the themes/questions listed above) by noon EST on November 3. I will get back to you in a day or so and ask for your AAG registration pin in order to register the session by the Nov 5th deadline. You will be located at a Research Institute that combines cutting edge scholarly research with rich experience of supporting labour, women’s, social and environmental movements, as well as progressive government institutions, engaging in struggles to change the world we live in. You will have the time and support to conduct and publish research and lay the foundation for your academic career, as well as participate in an innovative social justice program. You will participate in a collegial and progressive community of scholars. *The Institute * The Society, Work and Development Institute (SWOP) conducts relevant and exciting research on work, labour and social movements, mining and social transformations, environmental crisis, gender orders and contestation, the informalisation of work, society and politics, protest movements, patronage and civil society, collective and political violence, and the challenges of citizenship and democracy. The Institute collaborates with academics, grassroots organizations and government across South Africa and internationally, and is a collegial, team-working organization committed to developing a new generation of researchers and intellectuals. It is located in the most vibrant Humanities Faculty in South Africa, in a university known for cutting edge social sciences research. *The Program* The Fellowship program will include mentoring by experienced scholars, training in writing and presentation skills, research opportunities including research funding, and the opportunity to discuss your work in a vibrant network of scholars. The social justice component will include critical seminars on the interface between academic research and public engagement, and include a social justice project linked to work in labour and broader social movements, grassroots organising and advocacy, public interest litigation/transformative constitutionalism, and efforts to progressively influence policy-making and legislative processes. This is a full-time programme and is not compatible with other employment. Fellows will be expected to work closely with research staff, and to participate fully in the intellectual life of the institute. Each Fellow’s work programme will fit their specific goals, whether this means focusing on translating PhD research into publications, or undertaking new research and taking this through to publication. Candidates will explain how their own (completed or planned) research is linked to or has implications for social justice. It is preferable that applicants’ work should be broadly aligned with the thematic focuses in SWOP, which include: · extractive industries, labour regimes and rural transformations · precarious work and social protection · environment and society · democracy, violence, community formation, movements and citizenship · informalisation of work, society and politics · changing gender regimes. The emphasis is on ‘broadly’, such that candidates are able to explore their own interests and adopt fresh perspectives. *Period of Fellowship:* Applications are invited from all continents. The Fellowships will start on 1 May 2015 and cover a period of two years. Fellows will receive funding of R220 000 per year plus medical insurance, and in addition substantial research funding. To: "michel(a)p2pfoundation.net" <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Dear Michel Bauwens, The latest article by STWR’s Mohammed Mesbahi argues that the time has come when America must rapidly transform its values through a more inclusive and spiritual vision, based upon a just sharing of the world’s resources. Addressing young American activists – the ‘real heroes’ of the nation, he writes that it’s up to them to lead the way by organising a non-stop demonstration in every state, until that nationwide wave of peaceful protest eventually catches on globally. A new page of Mesbahi’s studies on the principle of sharing <http://news-stwr.org/M4P-2XLW7-GR70YU-1BXZEK-1/c.aspx> is now available on the home page of STWR’s website, in which he investigates the meaning and significance of the principle of sharing from spiritual and psychological as well as social, economic and political perspectives. Fwd: ZNet Commentary: Pete Dolack: The Medicine of the Trans-Pacific Partnership as Bitter as Ever

dear Kevin, I think excerpts of this should be featured in the p2p blog, this threat to the seed and other commons is very real, Michel ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: ZCommunications <michael.albert(a)zmag.org> Date: Sat, Oct 25, 2014 at 7:21 PM Subject: ZNet Commentary: Pete Dolack: The Medicine of the Trans-Pacific Partnership as Bitter as Ever To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…>. Pete Dolack: The Medicine of the Trans-Pacific Partnership as Bitter as EverZ Communications Daily Commentary The Trans-Pacific Partnership is as dangerous as ever. Denying access to medicines, increased surveillance of Internet usage and mandatory patents at the behest of multi-national corporations are some of the corporate goodies stashed in the TPP’s intellectual property chapter, revealed by WikiLeaks this month. Journalism could even be criminalized. The more we know about the TPP, the worse it gets, which is why the governments of the 12 countries involved, led by the Obama administration, continue to negotiate in unprecedented secrecy. The latest text of the TPP’s intellectual property chapter shows very little change from an earlier draft also published by WikiLeaks. In a press release accompanying <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> this month’s publication of the revised text, WikiLeaks says: “[T]here are significant industry-favouring additions within the areas of pharmaceuticals and patents. These additions are likely to affect access to important medicines such as cancer drugs and will also weaken the requirements needed to patent genes in plants, which will impact small farmers and boost the dominance of large agricultural corporations like Monsanto.” An analysis by Public Citizen <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> explains: “A rule [would] require the patenting of plant-related inventions, such as the genes inserted into genetically modified plants, putting farmers in developing countries at the mercy of the agriculture industry, including seed manufacturers such as Monsanto, and threatening food security in these countries more broadly.” Monsanto, already attempting to gain a stranglehold over the world’s food supply, is hardly in need of yet more favorable treatment. Proprietary seeds and genetically modified organisms are Monsanto’s routes to control what you eat <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> and what farmers grow. Once under contract, farmers are required to buy new genetically engineered seeds from the company every year and the Monsanto herbicide to which the seed has been engineered to be resistant. *Stealth ‘fast-track’ process needed to sneak TPP through Congress* Concomitant to the secrecy shrouding the TPP is the stealth needed to pass the “free trade” treaty. The Obama administration is seeking to be given “fast-track” authority by Congress. Under the fast-track process, Congress cedes its right to make any changes, limits its time to debate, and must schedule a straight yes-or-no vote (no amendments allowed) in a short period of time. Some of the worst “free trade” deals have been approved in this manner, and the importance of fast-track is shown in that the last U.S. trade pact approved, with South Korea, was approved in 2007 — literally one minute <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…>before fast-track authority expired! A fast-track bill, known as Camp-Baucus for its two sponsors, was essentially dead on arrival early this year due to widespread opposition in Congress, mostly by Democrats but also some Republicans. That this arose was because of organized activist work by groups across the United States. But Democratic Senator Ron Wyden, last April, signaled his intention to introduce a new fast-track bill, which he rebranded “smart track <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…>.” U.S. activists widely speculate that either Senator Wyden’s thinly disguised “smart track” bill or a more openly fast-track bill, perhaps written by Republicans in the House of Representatives, will be introduced in Congress following the November election with the intention of ramming it through a lame-duck session. U.S. activists for the past year and a half have focused on stopping fast-track in Congress because it will be virtually impossible to pass the TPP otherwise. Other countries have signaled their reluctance to agree to a final TPP text unless Congress grants the Obama administration fast-track authority. Without such authority, Congress would retain the right to make changes to an agreed-upon treaty, potentially unraveling any deal. The Canadian government, in late September, made this reluctance explicit. *Washington Trade Daily* recently reported that the Canadian ambassador to the U.S., Gary Doer, said Canada and other negotiating countries won’t conclude negotiations until the Obama administration has the “political muscle” of trade-promotion authority (the formal name for fast-track). Thus, activists advocate no lessening of vigilance against new attempts to introduce fast-track legislation. A Week of Action <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> Against Fast Track is being organized for November 8 to 14 in the U.S. In Australia, a series of rallies <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> opposing the TPP are taking place this week in Sydney and Canberra. These efforts come against a renewed push for a completed deal; negotiators are meeting this week, to be immediately followed on October 25 by a ministerial-level meeting in Sydney. *Criminalizing your right to know* There is much to oppose in the Trans-Pacific Partnership itself. A trade-secrets provision in the leaked intellectual property chapter is written in a way that makes it possible for reporting the contents of a future trade deal to be prosecuted. The article in question <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> states: “In the course of ensuring effective protection against unfair competition … each Party shall ensure that natural and legal persons have the legal means to prevent trade secrets lawfully in their control from being disclosed to, acquired by, or used by others (including state commercial enterprises) without their consent in a manner contrary to honest commercial practices.” Criminal penalties would be mandatory for: “the unauthorized, willful access to a trade secret held in a computer system; the unauthorized, willful misappropriation of a trade secret, including by means of a computer system; or the fraudulent (or unauthorized) disclosure of a trade secret, including by means of a computer system.” WikiLeaks’ publication of this text would be a criminal matter under this provision. This provision would make it mandatory for signatory governments to enact strict laws protecting undefined “trade secrets.” The text of the TPP itself is classified as a secret! Legislators and the public are excluded from seeing the text. In the United States, the only people other than negotiators to have access to the text are 605 “advisers,” <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> who are almost all executives of multi-national corporations or corporate lobbyists. *The Age* newspaper of Melbourne summarizes the threat to journalism <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> this way: “The leaked treaty text shows that in an effort to deal with ‘unfair competition,’ largely from Chinese industrial espionage, the United States has pushed ahead with proposals to criminalise disclosure of trade secrets across the Pacific Rim. The draft text provides that TPP countries will introduce criminal penalties for unauthorised access to, misappropriation or disclosure of trade secrets, defined as information that has commercial value because it is secret, by any person using a computer system. … There are no public interest or free speech exemptions. Criminalisation of disclosure would apply to journalists working for commercial media organisations or wherever the leak was considered harmful to the ‘economic interests’ of any TPP country.” *Barriers to cheaper generic medications* Other rules in the TPP intellectual property text would raise barriers to generic medications <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> becoming available and mandating that the terms of patents be extended on demand <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> by patent holders. The United States and Japan even propose language that would require intellectual property enforcement <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> to be elevated above any other legal consideration! The U.S. is also seeking the criminalization of copyright infringement, even in cases where there is no attempt to gain financially, such as a fan posting a work, and would also mandate that Internet service providers remove content <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> upon a corporation’s demand to avoid legal penalties. The linchpin to enforcement of draconian rules — the worst of which are put forth by the United States with Japan often seconding — is the “investor-state dispute mechanism <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…>.” That is a requirement that governments submit to binding arbitration in secret tribunals when an “investor” wants a law changed; the judges in these tribunals are corporate lawyers. The dispute mechanism is not directly mentioned in the intellectual property chapter, but the one article that purports to uphold national sovereignty <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> is contradicted by another article that mandates that multi-national corporations be given the same rights <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> as national corporations. That clause, standard in “free trade” agreements, is a battering ram used by the secret tribunals to order the withdrawal of laws safeguarding environmental, safety, health or labor standards. These rulings, in turn, become precedents that are used to hand down future harsher decisions. The Trans-Pacific Partnership, however, is far from the only danger to working people. There is also the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> between the U.S. and the E.U.; the Trade In Services Agreement <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…> that would eliminate the ability of governments to regulate the financial industry (50 countries are in on this one); and the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=CfxvrCXFYELtZdskNZLHR0dIc259CbJPYYp2kQLF…>. Each of these are designed to elevate corporations to the level of a country, although in practice, because of tribunal precedents, they would elevate corporations above national governments. “Free trade” agreements have little to do with trade, and much to do with imposing the domination of capital in as many spheres of life as possible. They are massive failures for working people in all countries. They offer, and can offer, nothing but a race to the bottom. Attempting to reform a race to the bottom is a fool’s errand. The TPP and its equally vile cousins must be defeated, and a complete re-conceptualization of trade and who should benefit from trade, substituted. That in turn requires directly challenging prevailing economic systems, otherwise we will be shoveling against the tide.
