How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. The Economics of Monasticism by Nathan Smith
by Kevin F 01 Feb '13

Hello, I've been reading 'The Economics of Monasticism by Nathan Smith' over the past week. He makes some interesting points in comparing the sustainability of intentional communities with that of Christian monasteries. Citing a study by Rost et al (2008) that "An average longevity of 463 years makes monasteries more durable not only than firms, but even than most states." and further suggesting possibilities as to what makes them so successful. I will add it to the wiki when I get a chance over the coming days. The Economics of Monasticism - Nathan Smith "Since their emergence in ancient times, Christian monasteries have proven to be among the most durable of all human institutions, and in the medieval centuries made enormous contributions to the emergence of Western civilization. They are organized internally on socialist lines: monks own no property and owe total obedience to the abbot, making the monastery a miniature ‘centrally planned economy.’ A puzzling contrast exists between the longevity of monasteries and the transience of secular socialist communes. This paper presents a theoretical model which shows why voluntary socialist communes might be viable despite ‘shirking’ problems, yet fail due to turnover, and how worship, which induces people with high ‘spiritual capital’ to self-select into the monastery and then grows that spiritual capital through ‘learning-by-doing,’ can solve the turnover problem and make a worship-based socialist commune—a monastery—stable. Monasticism, like the market, is a form of ‘spontaneous order,’ but unlike the market, it does not depend on third-party enforcement (e.g., by a state) to function: this explains why monasticism (unlike capitalism) was able to thrive in the anarchic Dark Ages. Monasteries, in principle and largely in practice, are a form of society based on consent of the governed, unlike liberal states which preach but do not practice consensual governance, and it is interesting to juxtapose the real, live ‘social contracts’ of the monasteries with the notional social contracts of liberal political theory." http://www.thearda.com/workingpapers/monasticism.asp -- ============================================================================= GPG KEY ============================================================================= If this email is not signed or encrypted its because it is sent via the browser. Dear Anna, I resonate with that comment, having spent a few years living in, and more interested in, intentional communities, some with a strong spiritual identity, I had come to the same conclusion, i.e. that no community without children AND elders, was 'realistic'. However, as the New We documentary shows, there are now multi-gender and multi-generational communities w hich have subsisted over several decades and at least two generations also of course, monasteries were hierarchical/feudal in their authoritity structure, Michel 1. Re: The Economics of Monasticism by Nathan Smith (Anna Harris) 2. Fwd: Be part of the new Edgeryders community: independent, bottom-up and self-organized. They are therefor parasitic in the sense that they live off the produce of the society at large which provides them with the personnel while leaving them free to indulge in their 'spiritual capital'. There is no doubt in my mind that child rearing is the most difficult and undervalued profession, since it is performed in the main voluntarily by untrained people out of love, and therefore does not appear to require any specific investment. Consequently it can be ignored as in the above discussion as though living in a secular socialist commune could be compared to living in a monastery. I am not decrying the need for a spiritual element in helping to sustain indivuals and groups. Indeed I think it is essential to bring meaning in the present situation of imminent 'collapse of civilisation', but it needs to be able to be interwoven into our everyday lives, not hived off into separate cloisters which may be beneficial for the inmates but do not really contribute to the sustenance of the rest of us. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

These are good questions; good subjects for our best and creative selves. For me, a lot of the nihilistic thinking comes from thinking with our conditioned intellects, which rightly tells us there are too many folk on the planet, doing too many things to disturb the balance of healthy water, air, and food sources for life to continue as is. So, we ain't. Cause we can't! Greed and addiction seems to outweigh our basic common sense and willingness to survive as we are. Our hearts and spirits are always telling us this fact, that we must become willing to die to our old selves and become a new kind of human. Life and cellular intelligence is much smarter than we are, and I do feel we will evolve into new life forms. It remains to be seen if we can have willing participation in that evolution. Though, in my opinion, our DNA is designed to that advantage and potential. If that includes continued evolution on the third dimension, that may mean our future selves may have to learn how to survive extremes of solar activity, perhaps global droughts or iceages, maybe severe radiation or poisions if we decide to use weapons of mass destuction. Life forms of humans come and go, but we are such a successful, smart, and adaptable predator, that I think life will not give up on us completely. If we choose to move into other higher dimensions of reality, we can really make no assumptions whatsoever. At this time, the amazing thing that I see that is so different than in past decades, is that there are so many people awakening to these bizarre realities, and so many very smart and good folk absolutely refusing to face the extremes of our dilimma, and instead moving into the comfort of very conservative, fearful, fanatic belief systems. . especially those of the Book, and a lot of them New Age folk moving more and more into varying forms of escape. Which is par for the course in all perilous times. I deeply feel the fragility of the human race as we have created it in the 20th century, and for that reason I have great hope for the 21st century! We keep creating new tools and meanings and purposes for the constant changes we are making in our identities of worlds, nations, relationships, genders, and selves! Elsewhere I take on one aspect of this cynical calumny, where folks sadly shake their heads over how "our ethics haven't kept pace with technology." What malarkey. What stunning ability to ignore all we have done in the last 60 years. >Oh, I'll avow we may not be getting better fast enough to save ourselves or the planet. It is cynics who are at best lazy and unhelpful. >Putting ethics aside, what other areas of improvement might do the most good? How about making everybody smarter? Better able to grasp complex situations and knowledge. Better equipped to understand diverse views and negotiate pragmatic solutions. So it has always been. >Decades ago, science fiction author Poul Anderson wrote a terrific novel -- Brain Wave -- that asked: what if every creature on Earth started getting smarter at a steady pace, beginning the same day? In that story, it happens because our solar system moves out a galactic zone that repressed electrical activity slightly. A magical story device but one that may have some relevance after all, as I'll assert below. >Today, much talk revolves around expanding human intelligence the way that it has increased for thousands of years -- through prosthetics. By using external devices to expand what we can know and see and pay attention to. This revolution began with cave paintings and then writing, but really took off with the invention of printing presses and glass lenses... then newspapers and steamships, radio, television, libraries, the Internet. Each generation, grouches greeted these advances with: "normal people cannot cope!" Countered by transcendentalists proclaiming "this will make us all as wise and mighty as gods!" >The irony, of course, is that both the cynics and fervid technophiles always turned out each to be about half right. (For more on this, see Third Millennium Problem Solving. A 90 minute Google Tech Talk spanning the entire range of human "discourse" and how it is evolving.) >But today let's veer away from obsessing on our toys and prostheses and external cyborg enhancements and instead focus on the central, "meatiest" aspect of all this. Are we - on average - getting smarter within our squishy human brains? To explore this briefly for us, I invited fellow member of the Lifeboat Foundation Francis Heylighen, of the Free University of Brussels, who will offer some background about the "Flynn Effect." >== Guest post: "Why it appears that we are getting smarter" == >... by Francis Heylighen >James Flynn, a political scientist working in New Zealand , observed in the 1980's that the score-results of different groups of people on standard intelligence tests had consistently increased over the past decades. Earlier researchers had failed to pay attention to that trend, because IQ scores are always calculated with respect to the average score for the present group. By definition, the average is set to 100, and the standard deviation to 15. Someone who scores one standard deviation better than the average would therefore get an IQ of 115. But if that person's score would be compared with the average for the corresponding group, but tested one generation earlier, then the final score would be about 125! Flynn was the first to systematically make such cross-generational comparisons. >Since then, the so-called "Flynn effect" has been confirmed by numerous studies. The same pattern, an average increase of some three IQ points per decade, was found for virtually every type of intelligence test, delivered to virtually every type of group. This means that people nowadays are on average some 20 IQ points smarter than people in 1940. People with a perfectly normal IQ of 90 then would according to present norms merely score 70, i.e. as having a mild form of mental retardation. For one type of test, Raven's Progressive Matrices, Flynn found data that spanned a whole century. He concluded that someone who scored among the best 10% a hundred years ago, would nowadays be categorized among the 5% weakest. >One might expect that the Flynn effect would be most pronounced for tests that measure the results of education. The opposite is true, however: the increase is most striking for tests measuring the ability to recognize abstract, non-verbal patterns. Tests emphasizing traditional school knowledge show much less progress. This means that something more profound than mere accumulation of data is happening inside people's heads. >Flynn himself admitted being baffled by his initial results, and finding it hard to believe that his generation was significantly more intelligent than the one of his parents. Indeed, compared to the previous generation, the number of people who score high enough to be classified as "genius" has increased more than 20 times. This means that we should now be witnessing, in Flynn's own words, "a cultural renaissance too great to be overlooked". Because he found this conclusion implausible, he suggested that what has risen is not intelligence itself, but some kind of "abstract problem solving ability" that may have more to do with skill at test-taking than with creative intelligence. >But if we look at the ever-accelerating production of scientific discoveries, technological innovations and cultural developments in general, the "cultural renaissance" does not seem such an absurd idea anymore. Perhaps we cannot pinpoint a dozen contemporary Einsteins simply because there are so many of them that their contributions have not had the time yet to diffuse to the level that everybody would know them. If there would be hundreds or thousands of Einstein-level geniuses in the scientific community nowadays, then it seems likely that none of them would stand out enough to get the kind of worldwide recognition we associate with exceptional figures like Darwin, da Vinci, or Newton. Moreover, our society and the problems it investigates have become much more complex than in the days of these historical geniuses. (We have already pickjed the "low-hanging fruit" -db) It should not surprise us that present-day geniuses may be working on subjects too complex or abstract to be appreciated outside a relatively small circle of specialists. But that does not diminish the superior intellectual level of their contributions. >Nowadays, most authors tend to consider the Flynn effect as a real cognitive improvement, not a mere artefact of testing methods (although the fact that people are more used to taking tests may have helped somewhat in getting better scores). There is less agreement about the origin of the effect, though. Most likely, it is due to the interaction between a variety of factors that tend to accompany the tremendous economic and social advances of the past century: >o better health care (less serious illnesses that can delay or damage brain development, less exposure to toxins such as lead, smog, food poisoning, etc.) >o better nutrition (better availability of fresh foods, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals such as iron and iodine, etc. that are necessary to build and support the brain) >o higher levels of education (although this is not the whole story -- as Flynn found that the IQs of children have been rising even during periods when the time spent in school remained the same). >o higher cognitive stimulation by an increasingly complex environment >This last factor may be particularly important. Indeed, our everyday world offers ever more abstract information to be processed ever more quickly-in the form of computer games, books, high-tech gadgets, television, advertisements, news items, magazine articles, blog entries, movies, etc. This requires ever more activity from the brain, thus "training" it to become more intelligent. >Some people like to complain that our society is "dumbing down", noting that very few read Shakespeare or listen to Bach nowadays. However, these people typically fail to notice that hardly anybody read Shakespeare a century ago (if they could read at all), and that probably more are reading him now than ever before. Moreover, an objective observer cannot fail to notice that a typical TV series or even an ad nowadays is much more complex and fast-paced than it used to be half a century ago. Thus, even the "non-intellectual" stimuli we are bombarded with demand ever more intense cognitive processing. In the workplace too, we see that what used to be repetitive industrial and agricultural jobs tend to be replaced by knowledge work, caring for people, or controlling complex machinery. As a result, people with a low intellectual level find it increasingly difficult to find a decently paying job, thus being stimulated to develop themselves. >A final plausible factor contributing to intelligence increases is that families have become smaller: with fewer children, parents have simply much more attention and resources to invest in each child. The effect on intelligence is confirmed by the observation that first-born or single-born children are on average some 2 to 3 IQ points smarter than second or third-born children, who had to compete with their siblings for parental attention. >In sum, while there are of course always methodological and other question marks about something as difficult to measure as intelligence, it seems well established now that we are indeed getting smarter. While the causes are not fully clear yet, those we do understand leave plenty of room for further improvement: we can definitely eat and live more healthily than we do now, while there does not seem to be a limit to the quantity and quality of education and cognitive stimulation achievable via the Internet. There is certainly cause for optimism in these observations. However, we should note that our rise in intelligence might simply be paralleling the rise in complexity of the problems we have to deal with, so that subjectively we may not really feel more competent to do what we need to do. >More to read >--Bernheim, J. Which makes us wonder -- is humanity "uplifting itself?" >There are so many aspects to this that we have no time to explore thoroughly here. >1. Can this phenomenon be partly genetic? It is a truism, widely held, that civilization must have slowed human evolution because it gave the weak opportunities to survive and to breed. But in fact there is every reason to believe that human evolution sped up with the arrival of civilization, and especially after we discovered beer! See Christopher Wills's book CHILDREN OF PROMETHEUS. For example, clothing and shelter technologies empowered some groups to settle the Tibetan Plateau, an environment so harsh that selective pressures have turned Tibetans into almost a sub-species of their own. This may really take off if segments of humanity start adapting to space and other worlds. >2. I would add a few recent factors, such as changes in the toxic loads supported by most human populations. Francis mentioned the gradual elimination of toxins like lead from paint and gasoline - (though resisted strenuously by the same dopes who claimed Tobacco was harmless and cars don't cause smog and that human industry cannot change a planet's climate). Removal of lead has now been shown to have dramatically reduced levels of violence in the U.S. and other populations since 1970. (See my own role in getting the lead out of gas, as a 19 year old Caltech student in 1970!) >The same can also be said regarding our burdens of living parasites. In Korea after 1960, a vast de-worming effort eliminated endemic intestinal parasites which helped improved diets to increase the height of children by many centimeters and no doubt affected brains. Likewise, the parasitic paramecium Toxoplasma gondii is endemic in much of the human population and now is known to dramatically alter personality and behavior. >I am hoping we'll find dozens of such things that have long nibbled away at humanity's potential! Why? Because no simpler way can be imagined to boost human mental and moral performance than just by eradicating factors holding it down. It would mean that we can improve in the easiest and best way... by eliminating that which had been crippling us. >3) Then there is selection. Elsewhere I discuss the question of whether humanity performed its spectacular mental "overshoot" beyond what was necessary to become the top predator, for the same reason that many other species acquire exaggerated traits -- sexual selection. Only in my theory, it was two-way with both males and females choosing each other based in part on savvy and smarts. In which case, might that sort of thing resume? It could do so... if tastes changed just a little. >Alas, none of these things can possibly act fast enough to turn the tide and help us in time. The real solution will be harder. It will involve looking in the mirror - each of us, one at a time - overcoming the allure of self-righteous dogmatism and rage, pondering little steps of self-improvement, adding grace to our thought processes, calm consideration, subtlety, curiosity and contingent wisdom... plus finding subtle ways to convince our neighbors to do the same. Learning to accomplish the latter, without getting killed... that's a sure intelligence test, if there ever was one! >Oh, even if we optimists are right, and a road to gradual and eclectic, free, voluntary, individualistic and diverse improvements in human nature and intelligence can be found, rest assured there will be many ructions and difficulties before we finally adapt at last to a mature and relaxedly sane state. To a world without brutish evil, rage, violence, illogic, dogmatism or Fox News. >Posted by David Brin > > __._,_.___ Reply via web post Reply to sender Reply to group Start a New Topic Messages in this topic (4) Recent Activity: Visit Your Group Was this message forwarded to you? It is freely available on the web. As I understand he will publish the book on this topic in Monthly Review Press soon. 2) There is indeed some excellent Marxist literature in development economics, as exemplified by the works of Ben Fine, Patrick Bond, and others. Fwd: Be part of the new Edgeryders community: independent, bottom-up and self-organized.

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Edgeryders <edgeryders(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Jan 30, 2013 at 4:49 AM Subject: Be part of the new Edgeryders community: independent, bottom-up and self-organized. To: friend <free.market.anticapitalist(a)gmail.com> ** Edgeryders version 2.0 is ours to build and take to a whole new level. Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser<http://us2.campaign-archive2.com/?u=2426561089e1f5ab32da252cd&id=a069250c1f…>. Dear friend, *We have made it:* Edgeryders has successfully spinned itself off from its mother ship, the Council of Europe. It is now independent, driven by its members for its members. That would be us. After #LOTE2 event in Brussels several of us have been racing behind the scenes to build new partnerships with organisations other than the Council of Europe. One reason is to raise some money to cover the costs of organising the next #LOTE event and some small capital to put into a crowd-funding campaign for the community. The other is that we started Edgeryders not to just have conversations and collaborations amongst ourselves, but to facilitate members collaborations with all kinds of organisations and institutions all over Europe. And to build legitimacy for ourselves as a collective. The third reason being that we can see that Edgeryders is moving more towards action and it would be cool if it could better support concrete collaborations between members on projects coming out of the collectivity. This requires a lot of coordination, is extremely time consuming and quite unglamorous work. Less than two months later we are super proud to be announcing the first funded project! We are collaborating with Swedish think tank Global Challenge, and have been tasked with hosting an online conversation with young people about the future of the labour market in Europe and the challenges we face. By the way, we want to practice radical transparency with this and all other project budgets as soon as we figure out a sustainable way to do it. *Don't be a stranger!* Building a real community, growing it and making participation in it more valuable for everyone involved is a lot of work. The logistics of organising events like #lote2 are really just the tip of the iceberg. Asta, Alberto, Matthias, Arthur, Thomas, Vinay, Ben, Ola, Helene, Eimhin, James, Petros have been all volunteering their time. And those are just some of the people who’ve been very active recently. Do you have some time to spare and would consider helping with one or more of the areas below? You get to* learn something new, pick up a couple of valuable skills and grow your personal network* while helping to keep the Edgeryders community going and growing stronger. Also, increasingly often opportunities for paid travel to conferences (see below) are popping up and obviously community volunteers are first in line. Now, if everybody was up for sparing a couple of hours per week, we’d probably get things done in no time. 'Yes to life! No to mining!,' organized by the Oaxacan Collective for the Defence of Territories, was one of the largest anti-mining gatherings the region has seen, as local opposition to some of the many thousands of individual extractive projects in Mesoamerica has grown dramatically in recent years. *Canada in the hot seat* The perpetuation of violence against activists, the patterns of water and soil contamination around extraction sites, and the total disregard for the autonomy of indigenous communities, were as familiar to the Guatemalans, El Salvadorians and Hondurans, as they were to Mexican activists present. John Cutfeet, a guest from the KI Nation in Northern Ontario and active participant in the Idle No More movement, brought parallel stories from his own community. When asked how the experience of a community in Northern Canada related to those of the people of Mesoamerica, he explained that indigenous peoples of the North and South "face similar experiences and similar tactics," in which "companies and government ... try to access lands and rob us of our birth rites to those lands." And while Cutfeet’s contributions were received with great enthusiasm, Canadian companies received a consistently strong rebuke throughout the weekend’s events. Delegates and speakers also criticized the Canadian government, and the Canadian Ambassador to Mexico, specifically, for playing an active role in promoting policies abroad which favoured Canadian mining interests at the expense of indigenous communities, human rights and the environment. According to Canada’s Department for Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), more than 75 per cent of the world's mining companies are Canadian-based. William Sacher and Alain Deneault, in their 2012 exposé on Canadian mining, Imperial Canada, Inc., argue that so many extractive companies choose to make Canada their home due to a combination of preferential tax loopholes, minimal legal recourse against the actions of Canadian companies abroad, and the unwavering support of government for the industry on the international stage. *The bloody cost of silver* Event attendees also heard from residents of another Oaxacan town, San José del Progreso, where two activists critical of the practices of Canadian-based Fortuna Silver Mines were murdered in 2012. Rosalinda Dionicio from San José del Progreso attended the event in Capulálpam. Dionicio received gunshot wounds in the leg in March of last year and still walks with a cane as a result of the attack. She is also the cousin of another anti-mining activist, Bernardo Vásquez Sánchez, one of the two community members murdered in 2012. There were many eyewitnesses to the most recent shooting of anti-mining activists in the town last June. These witnesses identified two of the shooters involved as an employee of Fortuna Silver and the son of the former municipal president (a strong proponent of the mine), respectively. The company and the municipality have both denied any involvement in the attack, dismissing the violence as the results of pre-existing conflict. For the people of San José del Progreso and other communities affected by mining, the site of the conference was significant, as Capulálpam de Méndez is one of only a few towns in the region that has succeeded in suspending all local mining activities. Due to water contamination, the nearby Natividad silver and gold operation (run by another Canadian firm, Continuum Resources) had its operations suspended indefinitely by the federal prosecutors for environmental protection in 2007. After the closure, Continuum Resources Ltd. became a subsidiary of Fortuna Silver Mines. The company is still actively lobbying to re-open the mine, as the people and municipality of Capulálpam de Méndez continue to fight against its imposition. *A growing sense of solidarity* * *The event focussed on finding ways that affected communities across the hemisphere could work in solidarity with one another to challenge the mining industry and its political backers. Through stronger networks, participants felt more confident that their local struggles were not isolated instances, and thus could be challenged by a range of other communities with connections to the relevant aggressors. John Cutfeet described how this approach was being used by First Nations communities within Canada. When one community was facing territorial conflicts, others would spring to action across the country, increasing pressure on particular companies and government agencies from many different angles. Stronger networks, many participants felt, meant their small-scale struggles for land, water and basic human rights, had the potential to challenge the power of large multi-national corporations and the governments that support them, as both the KI First Nation in Ontario and the people of Capulálpam, Oaxaca have been able to demonstrate in recent years. While the stories of the weekend were often harrowing, the energy was high, with a sense of the collective power that comes from knowing there are countless others facing similar struggles, and some who have even managed to win, against significant odds. "Five years ago we were the only ones in the country with the strength to resist these mines," said Rurik Hernández, an organizer with the Broad Opposition Front (FAO in Spanish) from Cerro de San Pedro, one of the first communities in Mexico to challenge mining in their community. "Now a lot of communities have this strength ... They know that they are not alone." *Liam Barrington-Bush currently lives in Oaxaca, Mexico and tweets as @hackofalltrades<http://email.zsustainers.org/wf/click?upn=xrLDuKs9E-2FW2gJyS-2BCwKWy2v0NJWB…> * ------------------------------ *From:* Z Net - The Spirit Of Resistance Lives<http://email.zsustainers.org/wf/click?upn=xrLDuKs9E-2FW2gJyS-2BCwKWwqejxOUz…> *URL:* http://www.zcommunications.org/they-know-they-are-not-alone-anti-mining-act…<http://email.zsustainers.org/wf/click?upn=xrLDuKs9E-2FW2gJyS-2BCwKWwqejxOUz…> The tool to turn commentary mailings off or on can be found in "My Account" -> "Preferences/Edit My Details" option (Receives commentaries). See the end of this mailing for how to contribute. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ http://tom-atlee.posterous.com/a-society-governed-by-the-peoples-wisdom short url: http://post.ly/A9eh0 Dear friends, Last weekend I joined a small group exploring the idea that society could have the capacity to generate "public wisdom" and that we could empower that wisdom to support wiser public policy and popular behavior. Because many people don't know what we mean by "public wisdom", we clarified that, for the purposes of this inquiry, the word "public" means that - the wisdom is generated by ordinary people - in groups who embody the diversity of their communities - for the guidance of officials and the citizenry (the whole public) - regarding public affairs and the concerns of the citizenry - in forms that are known about and readily accessible to everyone. and the word "wisdom" means, simply, - taking into account what needs to be taken into account - for long term broad benefit. Evidence suggests that under the right conditions, ordinary people can produce that kind of wisdom on behalf of their community or country. (I explore those "right conditions" in my 2012 book EMPOWERING PUBLIC WISDOM http://empoweringpublicwisdom.us/.) In our gathering last weekend, my colleague Carolyn Shaffer invited me to answer the following question: "How is life in the public realm better after empowered public wisdom takes hold?" Her question invited me to assume that a culture of empowered public wisdom had already come about. It was an interesting exercise. I want to share with you my answers. Perhaps they will help you see why some of us are so attracted to this approach to social change. When I imagine myself in a culture that enables and empowers public wisdom, I imagine a society in which the following are true: * In general, among all of us, there is a very strong sense of - and identity as - "We the People". We see ourselves, together, as the powerful, wise, self-governing force of our shared world. We are our own wise sovereign, a sensible collective guide arising from our informed, shared common sense. * We feel the government is US, not THEM. We feel that WE, ourselves, collectively, are running things, making our communities and countries work well. We are competently creating better prospects for our children - and we are proud of that. * Most issues are getting resolved in ways that the vast majority of us - usually well over 80% - think are sensible. We treasure and protect the systems we have instituted to achieve those results. * There is less protest and money in politics than in "the old days" - and far more productive conversation. There is still attempts at political manipulation and polarization, but they are minor footnotes to the overall functioning of our politics and government. We recall with some horror the old days when "politics" meant all-out polarized battle, often with little real discussion or insight about what was really going on and what was really important. (Young people today can't even grasp how insane it all was!) * We often watch a randomly selected group of our fellow citizens working through a difficult issue or creating a budget using our citizen deliberative council approach. Many of us participate in forums, chats and call-ins before, during, and after such formal deliberations. Viewing and participating in citizen deliberations is a major national pastime. After all, hot debates often surface and dramatic stories get told. Since the results affect us all, we're intensely curious each time to see how it will turn out. We have to admit, however, that as popular as these deliberations are, they only occasionally get better ratings than major sports events. (Some things never change!) * More and more people see political parties as anachronisms. Their remnants today are fringe, sort of quaint, like Civil War re-enactments. They've been largely replaced by self-organized political discussion forums and advocacy alliances that cross over and mix up what people used to see (in the old days) as Left and Right, liberal and conservative. Most of us are now fully aware that such partisan over-simplicity doesn't come close to reflecting our tremendous diversity and creativity, to say nothing of our potential common ground on 90% of the issues we face. * Seeking that common ground, people listen well to each other in political conversations and know how to use their differences creatively. Many methods for doing that are well known and widely used. For many years we always depended on professional facilitators, moderators and mediators to help us do this, but we are rapidly a broad cultural competence at doing it ourselves. * When there is political battle - which still happens occasionally - it is usually (not always) respectful and provides us observers with useful information about the issues. We tend to recognize and dismiss partisans who use attack ads and undue emotional manipulation in their propaganda. Most of us know we have far better ways to learn about and decide about the big issues in our society. * Engaged citizens frequently turn to the crowd-sourced Deliberapedia - first described in the book Empowering Public Wisdom by Tom Atlee - to get a clear sense of the arguments that support various approaches to each issue. Many of us - especially us activist types - add our two cents or rewrite sections to make it more complete or useful. Deliberapedia increasingly covers fringe approaches and emerging issues, which is good because some of the lesser-known issues and approaches are where the most important wisdom shows up first or is needed most. * Although so much of our political and government activity is handled by citizen deliberations in policy juries and by citizen-reviewed ballot initiatives, we still have a representative system of government. However, unlike in "the old days", we feel like our reps work for us, rather than over us or behind our backs. The reps mission is to help craft our expressed collective policy preferences into a consistent body of laws that all stakeholders can live with and support, and to make sure their constituents are engaged and cared for in the process. We're very proud of how we've woven representative democracy, direct democracy, and citizen deliberative democracy into a potent and satisfying whole. * We push our diplomats to use wisdom-generating conversations rather than violence, threat, and manipulation in international relations. This shift mimics what most of us are doing more and more in our homes and communities. The biggest result of all this is that families, communities, countries and the world are much more peaceful. * In general, per survey data, we feel far less fear and far more collective determination, creative engagement, and willingness to explore transformative approaches when addressing crisis-level issues like climate change, economic disruption, nuclear issues, emerging technologies, and the remnants of terrorism (there's less of it but it's often more dangerous). We've come to understand that such crises can help us focus on the need for fundamentally new approaches. * A sustainable economy is evolving based on enhancing and sustaining our quality of life together right where we are, more than on consuming and having our own stuff made in big factories and plantations far away. Resource constraints and new technologies are combining to channel more economic activities into local interactions, enhanced by lots of sharing and gifting and mutual aid. Much has been written about how our systems for eliciting public wisdom have contributed to our turning away en masse from mass consumerism to this far more satisfying way of life that happens to also be more sustainable. * Thanks to our spreading sense of ownership and participation in governance, governments no longer complain about scarcity of resources for programs and services. For one thing, there's less need for government as we return to doing more things for ourselves and each other and building mutually supportive communities. For similar reasons, many remaining government programs don't cost as much as they once did because so many people are involved in creating and implementing them, so they are far less bureaucratic than in the old days. Finally, we have wisely revised our tax systems, replacing taxes on income from productive work with taxes on activities that threaten or damage our "general welfare" (that great phrase from the US Constitution has become quite popular in recent decades). We see taxes as a way to support our society's health and to practice responsible citizenship, not as an oppressive burden. * We keep close watch over our public-wisdom generating processes to protect them from being corrupted. Luckily, we have the means to do that: periodic review by both randomly selected citizen panels AND ongoing oversight by American Citizens Engaged - our independent association of past members of citizen deliberative councils. Backing them up are very tough laws against efforts to corrupt the process or the citizens who are selected to participate in it. Finally we can and do sometimes hold referendums (at every level including the national) to head off sneaky efforts to degrade our wisdom-generating systems and their safeguards. By using random selection for our temporary citizen councils, we greatly reduce the problem of corruption. We take seriously abolitionist Wendell Phillips' 1852 warning that "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty—power is ever stealing from the many to the few…. The hand entrusted with power becomes … the necessary enemy of the people." Random selection, as our ancient Athenian democracy-ancestors knew, is a potent antidote to the corruptions of power and the manipulations of elites. Unlike the ancient Athenians, we include every adult in our random selections and we use it to maintain the integrity of our representative system - our republic - as well, so that we can have the best of both worlds. Our citizen councils enhance the "balance of power" America's founders innovated when they equally empowered all three branches of government - legislative, executive, and judicial. We also use the eternal vigilance of the People's collective wisdom to oversee the behavior of our media and those corporations upon which we still depend. Our biggest innovation is that we use not just vigilance but wisdom - our collective wisdom. In 1958 theologian Henry Nelson Wieman warned, "The predicament of Western man …is a failure to develop wisdom proportionate to power …Wisdom must be in proportion to power if power is to be used wisely. All the evidence seems to indicate that the wisdom of the majority of people in Western culture has not been increasing as rapidly as the gigantic increase in power which they have acquired …Wisdom in this context is the understanding of other minds and of one’s own mind in such a way that one knows what are his basic needs, the needs of others, and the most important needs of human kind." This we have done by catalyzing a leap in the wisdom that we - we ordinary people together - can co-create and apply to the conditions of our lives, the life of our communities, and the world that our children's great grandchildren will thrive in. Knowing the risks of "gigantic power", we have given our collective wisdom the power to monitor the other forms of power we have collectively created - social, political, economic, and technological powers - powers whose tremendous gifts come with great shadows that can only be effectively illuminated and dissipated with the revealing light of the collective wisdom we generate together. So we do that. --- I invite you to add your own thoughts and visions regarding "public wisdom" by submitting a comment on this blog post.
