Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Or take the time and read some very old documented evidence available at a library near you= but you may need to stay there awhile on microfiche. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Janssen Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 4:39 PM To: P2P Foundation mailing list Subject: Re: [P2P-F] Fw: Info On Sun, Oct 23, 2011 at 10:32 AM, Natalie Golovin <10natalie(a)cox.net> wrote: > The European Tribes treated the Natives no worse than they treated each > other. Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. The initial decision to leave, made in the special referendum back in June 2016, has taken over four tortuous years to implement. So what does the deal mean for British capital and labour? For British manufacturers, the tariff-free regime of the EU’s internal market has been maintained. But the British government will have to renegotiate new bilateral treaties with governments across the world, whereas previously they were included within EU deals. People will no longer be able to work freely in both economies by right, all goods will require significant additional paperwork to cross borders and some will be checked extensively to verify they comply with local regulatory standards. Frictionless trade is over; indeed, that's even between Northern Ireland and mainland Britain with a new customs border across the Irish Sea. And that’s just goods trade, where the EU is the destination of 57% of British industrial goods. The British government fought tooth and nail to protect the fishing industry (and failed), but it contributes only 0.04% of UK GDP, while the services sector contributes over 70%. Of course, most of this is not exported, but still services exports contribute 30% to UK GDP. And 40% of that services trade is with the EU directly. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> Indeed, while the UK runs a huge goods trade deficit with the EU, that is in part compensated by running a surplus in services trade with the EU. This surplus is in mainly financial and professional services where the City of London leads. Exports of UK financial services are worth £60 billion annually compared to imports of £15 billion. And 43% of financial services exports go to the EU. The Brexit deal with the EU has done nothing for this sector. Professional services providers will lose their ability automatically to work in the EU after the Brexit deal failed to obtain pan-EU mutual recognition of professional qualifications. This means that professions from doctors and vets to engineers and architects must have their qualifications recognised in each EU member state where they want to work. And the deal does not cover financial services access to EU markets, which is still to be determined by a separate process under which the EU will either unilaterally grant “equivalence” to the UK and its regulated companies or leave firms to seek permissions from individual member states. Over the next year, there may well be bit by bit agreements on trade in these areas. But the UK service sector is bound to end up worse off for its exports than was the case within the EU. And that’s serious because the UK is a ‘rentier’ economy that depends heavily on its financial and business services sector <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…>. Financial services contribute 7% of UK GDP, some 40% higher a contribution than in Germany, France or Japan. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> The UK is a country of bankers, lawyers, accountants and media people, rather than engineers, builders and manufacturers. The UK has a huge top-heavy banking sector, but a small manufacturing sector compared to other G7 economies. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> What about the impact on working people? On leaving the EU, what little British labour has gained from EU regulations will be in jeopardy within a country which is already the most deregulated in the OECD. The EU rules included a 48-hour week maximum (riddled with exemptions); health and safety regulations; regional and social subsidies; science funding; environmental checks; and of course, above all, free movement of labour. All that is going or being minimised. Around 3.7% of the total EU workforce – 3 million people – now work in a member state other than their own. Since 1987, over 3.3 million students and 470,000 teaching staff have taken part in the EU’s Erasmus programme. That programme will exclude Britons from now on. Immigration into the UK from EU countries has been significant; but it also works the other way; with many Brits working and living in continental Europe. With the UK out of the EU, Britons will be subject to work visas and other costs that will be greater than the total money per person saved from contributions to the EU. On balance, EU immigrants (indeed all immigrants) have contributed more to the UK economy in taxes (income and VAT), in filling low-paid jobs (hospitals, hotels, restaurants, farming, transport) than they have taken up (in extra cost of schools, public services etc). That’s because most are young (often single) and help pay pension contributions for those Brits who are retired. The Brexit referendum has already brought about a sharp drop in net immigration into the UK from the EU, down 50-100,000 and still falling. That can only add to the loss of national income and tax revenues down the road. Most sober estimates of the impact of leaving the EU suggest that the UK economy will grow more slowly in real terms than it would have done if it had remained a member. Mainstream economic institutes, including the Bank of England, reckon that there would be a cumulative loss in real GDP for the UK over the next ten to 15 years of between 4-10% of GDP from leaving the EU; or about 0.4% points off annual GDP growth. That’s a cumulative 3% of GDP loss per person, equivalent to about £1000 per person per year. The UK’s Office for Budget Responsibility reckons that one third of this relative loss has already taken place because of the reduction in the pace of business investment since the referendum as domestic businesses stopped investing much, due to uncertainty about the Brexit deal along with a sharp drop in foreign inward investment. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> And then of course, the COVID pandemic has decimated business activity. In 2020., the UK will suffer the largest fall in GDP among major economies apart from Spain and recover more slowly than others in 2021. British capitalism was already slipping badly before the pandemic hit. Its trade deficit with the rest of the world had widened to around 6% of GDP; and real GDP growth had slid back from over 2% a year to below 1.5%, with industrial production crawling along at 1%. The UK economy already had weak investment and productivity <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> growth compared with the 1990s and with other OECD countries <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> . <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> Investment in technology and R&D has been poor, more than one-third less than the OECD average. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> And the reason for this is clear. The average profitability of British capital has been falling. Even before the pandemic hit in 2020, average profitability (according to official statistics) was 30% below the level of the late 1990s and, excluding the Great Recession, was at an all-time low. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> Since the referendum of 2016, UK profitability has fallen by nearly 9%, compared to small rises in the Eurozone and the US. And the Eurozone AMECO forecast for profitability will leave the UK 18% below 2015 levels by 2022! <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> As a result, investment by British capital is set to plunge and is forecast to be down a staggering 60% by 2022 compared to the referendum year of 2016. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> But maybe the UK can confound these dismal forecasts, as the government claims, because UK industry and the City of London can now expand across the world 'free from the shackles' of EU regulation. And it is increasingly clear how it thinks it can do this – by turning Britain into a tax and regulation-free base for foreign multinationals. The government is planning ‘free ports’ or zones; areas with little to no tax in order to encourage economic activity. While located geographically within a country, they essentially exist outside its borders for tax purposes. Companies operating within free ports can benefit from deferring the payment of taxes until their products are moved elsewhere or can avoid them altogether if they bring in goods to store or manufacture on site before exporting them again. Unfortunately, for the government, studies show <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.susse…> that free ports might simply defer the point when taxes are paid, as imports would still need to reach final customers across the country. And the incentives may also promote the relocation of activity that would have taken place anyway, from one part of the UK to another. Moreover, tax breaks could mean a loss of revenue for the Treasury. And free ports risk facilitating money laundering and tax evasion, as goods are usually not subject to checks that are standard elsewhere. A deregulated Britain will not restore economic growth, let alone good, well-paid jobs for an educated and skilled workforce. It will only boost the profits of multi-nationals, using cheap, unskilled labour. In sum, the Brexit deal is another obstacle to sustained economic growth for Britain. But the COVID pandemic slump and the underlying weakness of British capital are much more damaging to the UK's economic future than Brexit. Brexit is just an extra burden for British capital to face; as it also will be for British households. *michael roberts <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…>* | December 29, 2020 at 5:42 pm | Categories: capitalism <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…>, economics <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…>, Profitability <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> | URL: https://wp.me/pLequ-4Jf <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.me%2F…> Comment <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> See all comments <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> Like <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> Unsubscribe <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> to no longer receive posts from Michael Roberts Blog. Fwd: [r3.0 Newsletter] RIP Steering Board Member Brendan LeBlanc / Multicapitalism White Paper Released
by Michel Bauwens 28 Dec '20

28 Dec '20

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: r3.0 <hello(a)r3-0.org> Date: Tue, Dec 22, 2020 at 7:58 PM Subject: [r3.0 Newsletter] RIP Steering Board Member Brendan LeBlanc / Multicapitalism White Paper Released To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> View this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/r3-0/endoftheyear2020-2?e=e9fc303c86> <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> *Dear Michel, * Just when we thought 2020 couldn't take anything more from us, we get news that it has shuffled off the mortal coil of our beloved Steering Board Member Brendan LeBlanc. Our sadness is compounded by the intense irony that he passed away only a week before we now release our first White Paper, *From Monocapitalism to Multicapitalism: 21st Century System Value Creation, *which he played an instrumental role in seeding. We consider this White Paper a gift to Brendan's memory, and a holiday gift to you, our community. This season also invites reflections on the year past and the year to come, so we bring you our latest Medium article, which reviews 2020 and previews 2021. Since the last newsletter earlier this month, we kicked off the Thresholds of Transformation Project to pilot test the UNRISD Sustainable Development Performance Indicators, and we have a few final slots remaining for this Project before the training in early January. Our ecosystem of Partners have been very active in recent weeks, so this newsletter documents r3.0-related activity by Academic Alliance Member Delphine Gibassier and Advocation Partners Daniel Christian Wahl and Mark McElroy. Finally, we add one new Steering Board Member and one new Advocation Partner. Now, the bullets: - *RIP Steering Board Member Brendan LeBlanc * - *Multicapitalism White Paper Released * - *r3.0 2020 Reveiw / 2021 Preview * - *UNRISD Thresholds of Transformation Pilot Project Kickoff * - *Partner News * - *New Steering Board Member & Advocation Partner* We wish you all a relaxing, connective, and safe holiday season! *The r3.0 Operations Team* *Alexandra, Bill, Cleophea, Peter & Ralph* RIP Steering Board Member Brendan LeBlanc <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> As you can see from these pictures with Bill & Ralph, Brendan was a consummate joker whose humor slyly invited us to laugh at our humanity -- both our shortcomings and our potential. Here's how we memorialized Brendan in the dedication to the *Multicapitalism*White Paper: *Dedicated to Brendan LeBlanc, who passed away unexpectedly just before this White Paper was released. Brendan was a close friend and colleague who we remember for his keen intelligence and wicked good sense of humor. As a r3.0 Steering Board Member, he championed this White Paper in particular (you wouldn’t have it in your hands now without Brendan’s tireless advocacy) and the work of r3.0 more broadly — particularly our work on Sustainability Context and the Carrying Capacities of the Capitals. Brendan’s fingerprints are all over the famous Paragraph 58 in the International Integrated Reporting Council’s Background Paper on Value Creation <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…>, which integrates carrying capacity and thresholds & allocations prominently, and we remember him for his most memorable quote: “The only thing more dangerous than no progress is the illusion of progress.” <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> But ultimately, we remember Brendan for the deep belly laughter he inspired every time we were together. The world is a much better place for his having been here.* Multicapitalism White Paper Released <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> "It's been a long time coming," writes Bill in the Author's Foreword (quoting David Crosby <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…>) about this, our first White Paper: *From Monocapitalism to Multicapitalism: 21st Century System Value Creation*. More than three years, to be precise. But we think it's worth the wait -- and hope you agree! The project started as a partnership with the International Integrated Reporting Council; when we delivered the final draft, they considered it an "important and provocative paper." *So provocative*, in fact, that IIRC recognized they would need to request significant changes to be able to publish it under their name, and they showed respect by refraining from asking us to dilute the message to satisfy their more conservative base, and instead invited us to publish it solo <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> . We believe this is an integral part of the story of this paper: Multicapitalism, the concept conceived by our Advocation Partner Mark McElroy (and his partner Martin Thomas) predicated on the fact that the multiple capitals all have carrying capacities, is an inherently provocative notion that challenges the core underpinnings of status quo Monocapitalism, with its commitment to shareholder primacy, perpetual growth, and privatization of value. We believe that if political expedience requires us to disregard the carrying capacities of the capitals, then we must reject this "political world" (to quote Bob Dylan <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…>, as the White Paper does), and instead embrace the "material world" (more like George Harrison's <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> than Madonna's <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…>) that reconciles thermodynamic realities with ethical imperatives -- as this Multicapitalism White Paper does. Enjoy <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> ! r3.0 2020 Review / 2021 Preview <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> We believe that, in retrospect, we will look back on 2020 as a pivotal year, when the concept of carrying capacity thresholds finally took hold (almost a half-century after *Limits to Growth* popularized the idea, and almost two decades after the Global Reporting Initiative codified it via the Sustainability Context Principle.) Unfortunately, it took Covid-19, with its "flatten the curve" meme (that embeds the dotted line of healthcare system capacity), to finally drive the point home. Read our full review of 2020 here <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…>, and see what we have to say about 2021! UNRISD Thresholds of Transformation Pilot Project Kickoff <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> Last week, we launched the “Thresholds of Transformation” project <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> for pilot testing the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development’s Sustainable Development Performance Indicators (see here <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> for our article on the project). More the 40 partners joined us from over 20 organizations in our Kickoff Meeting for piloting the Three Tiered set of Indicators (Tier One = Incrementalist; Tier Two = Contextualized / Thresholds-Based; Tier Three = Transformational). There are still a few slots open in the project, for which the training starts in early January, so please reach out to Bill <[email protected]?subject=Request%20to%20Join%20Thresholds%20of%20Transformation%20> and/or Ralph <[email protected]?subject=Request%20to%20Join%20Thresholds%20of%20Transformation%20> if you wish to reserve a seat at the table. Fwd: The Small, the Various, and the Personal
by Michel Bauwens 28 Dec '20

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Schumacher Center for a New Economics < schumacher(a)centerforneweconomics.org> Date: Tue, Dec 22, 2020 at 11:27 PM Subject: The Small, the Various, and the Personal To: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> view this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/centerforneweconomics.org/small-various-personal?e=639a1…> <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> *“When distance and convenience sets in; the small, the various and the personal wither away.” ― Jane Jacobs, The Death and Life of Great American Cities* Dear Michel Bauwens, 2021 is sure to generate a contagious celebration of neighborhoods and of the small, locally-owned businesses that shape those communities. The events of 2020 have demonstrated how fragile yet vital these businesses are. Their style, diversity, and idiosyncrasies create the unique character of our respective Main Streets. Their storefronts and products reflect regional tastes and aesthetics; they provide places to gather, share information, and practice the art of citizenship. They offer our youth their first jobs. They sponsor play groups, diversity training workshops, children’s choruses, and food pantries – not tackling the big national problems, but certainly making headway on the small, stubborn, local ones. Shopkeepers and restauranteurs reinvented their operations and menus as the virus spread, pivoting quickly to curbside pickup and outdoor dining to continue serving their communities even during a pandemic. *Jane Jacobs* Jane Jacobs, keen observer of city life and re-imaginer of economic theory, saw in this very diversity the seeds for revitalization and growth. She bemoaned the outcomes of conventional planning in which old buildings are replaced with uniform high-rises that separate living spaces from the animated traffic of commerce. She cheered the messiness and inconvenience of towns that lead residents to cross streets and duck into shops, engaging in unplanned meetings and conversations that act like petri dishes for new enterprises and ideas. Under the seeming disorder of the old city, wherever the old city is working successfully, is a marvelous order for maintaining the safety of the streets and the freedom of the city. It is a complex order. Its essence is intricacy of sidewalk use, bringing with it a constant succession of eyes. This order is all composed of movement and change, and although it is life, not art, we may fancifully call it the art form of the city and liken it to the dance — not to a simple-minded precision dance with everyone kicking up at the same time, twirling in unison and bowing off en masse, but to an intricate ballet in which the individual dancers and ensembles all have distinctive parts which miraculously reinforce each other and compose an orderly whole. The ballet of the good city sidewalk never repeats itself from place to place, and in any once place is always replete with new improvisations. ― Jane Jacobs, *The Death and Life of Great American Cities* Local economies may not be the most efficient economies, but they are the richest. They engage citizens not just as consumers, but rather as multi-faceted human beings. The result is a daily life constructed not around superfluous *stuff*, but connection to the people, stories, and landscapes that make a community. *Downtown Great Barrington, MA during a previous year's Holiday Stroll hosted by the Southern Berkshire Chamber of Commerce.* For forty years the Schumacher Center has innovated programs that encourage citizen support for local businesses and local economies. Local currencies <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> keep the wealth of a region circulating in the locality, identifying and uplifting home-grown enterprises embedded in their communities and strengthening local supply chains. Face-to-face transactions mediated by paper currency bring users to town where they meet shopkeepers and recognize the many ways their lives intertwine as parents, board members, theater enthusiasts, hospital volunteers, trail hikers, and more. Community land trusts <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> (CLTs) provide low-cost access to manufacturing sites, retail space, and productive farmland, as well as workforce housing. CLTs are catchers’ mitts for donated land, putting it under permanent community control and offering 98-year leases for uses determined in collaboration with the donor, such as designation as an apple orchard, food processing plant, or local bookstore. CLTs give citizens a way to foster development while allowing new enterprises to build equity in buildings and other improvements to the land. Community Supported Industry <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> (CSI) brings together the business community with retired professionals, local officials, social investors, non-profit leaders, and youth to explore what leakages are occurring in the local economy to determine how, working together, they can build new import-replacement businesses to fill those gaps. In this way, new enterprises grow organically out of knowledge of the workforce, raw materials, cultural preferences, and appropriate scale of the community, rather than by wooing a large corporation to the area to fulfill these needs. Join us in 2021 and every day in hearty celebration and loyal patronage of our small businesses. Your annual donation to the Schumacher Center helps us continue our advocacy. Fwd: Empowered or Entasked? Distributed Organizing's Unfulfilled Potential

As I mentioned last week, I’d like to keep this publication free to all, but will only be able to do that if enough of you with the means to do so choose to subscribe <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVkM-OhCAMxp9mOBpABTxw2Mu8hsHSUTIIButufP…>. You can do it for as little as $5 per month, or pick the “founding member” option and fill in whatever amount you can. Many thanks! Now, back to our regular ruminations… If you were a Biden volunteer, or want to look under the hood to understand how its distributed digital organizing team of 28 people managed to mobilize 160,000 volunteers who together made 88 million calls to voters, held 200,000 “relational conversations,” sent 150 million texts, and supported 11,000 supporter-led events, cumulatively managing one-third of the campaign’s total voter contacts, then this detailed post-mortem <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVUMtuhSAQ_ZrLrgZQARcsuulvGB5zlVwEA2Mb-_…> by *Nathan Rifkin*, the campaign’s director of distributed organizing, is a must-read. I really have to take issue with his argument, however, that what the Biden campaign built by necessity because of the pandemic “is part of a long organizing tradition in America, from Huerta, to Alinsky, to Gompers, and countless more, that stretches back centuries.” To the degree that distributed organizing removes people from their local contexts and turns them into just-in-time “act now place agnostic” volunteers assigned shifts on a rolling basis, distributed organizing is more like the kind of dehumanizing industrialized factory work that organizers like Samuel Gompers fought against. Or, to be even more sharp about it, it’s like the Amazon warehouse solution to retail, with campaign volunteers as the worker bees handling incoming rush jobs, only to do good things like help remind voters where their polling place is rather than box up a toaster. It’s “Resisting Alone <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlUM2OhCAMfprhNgZQEA8c9rKvYRC6DhkEA3U3vv…>,” 2020-style. To be fair, Rifkin is describing a special situation—a national presidential campaign, plus one that chose (perhaps unwisely) to stop almost all face-to-face campaigning because of COVID-19. To be able to convert thousands of stuck-at-home supporters into helpful cogs in a larger machine was miraculous. But I’m not sure it’s a model for anything beyond this special case. Whenever I see a campaign staffer or politician, for that matter, use the word “empower” when the word “entask” is more accurate, I think back to a post my friend *Zephyr Teachout* wrote 13 years ago entitled “You Don’t Have the Power <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlkMuOhCAQRb9Gdm14KOCCxSxmfsMgVCtpBINld_…>.” “Power is when you get to decide the rules of the game, not when you get to play it,” she wrote. “A factory worker uses a lot of force, but doesn’t—not in his daily job—have power.” She went on, with great prescience: “It is important to distinguish between distributed work and decentralized power. Distributed work will be clearly central to future electoral politics. Candidates will experiment with more complicated Internet-enabled phone banking matching systems, door-knocking systems, and donor incentive systems. However, distributed work is not necessarily work in which the power is decentralized. The fact that I can send a suggestion into Coke.com <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlUMuOwyAM_JpyjICE14HDXvobiICboBKIiLOr_P…> or participate in a contest about their next marketing effort does not meaningfully transform my lack of power in the organization into a fact of power. Likewise, the fact that a citizen might sign a petition or engage in a massive distributed literature-dropping effort may show great ingenuity on the part of the designer of that system, and involve new technologies, and enable people to be part of the political process—without giving any person involved any meaningful political power, or meaningful way to have strategic input or make creative decisions.” Now, let’s look at how Rifkin uses the word “empower,” which shows up multiple times in his essay. [emphases added] “Distributed organizing programs, as this post will explain, represent a radical vision of volunteer organizing, an evolution of caucus organizers and neighborhood team leaders for the internet age. A decentralized organization to train and *empower* hundreds of thousands of volunteer organizers to achieve goals otherwise impossible with only paid staff.” “Put another way, the goal of the distributed model is to *empower* large numbers of volunteers to act in decentralized unison towards a common purpose, with processes and leadership to support the creativity members of the distributed team show as they work, frequently independently, to achieve the group’s goal.” “The primary challenge was not how to recruit the most volunteers, though that certainly played a role. The core challenge was how best to *empower* volunteers to engage in the most impactful work.” “[The team] then reinvented relational metrics, which have often relied on ‘messages sent’ or ‘user contacts upload to an app’, to instead track volunteer leaders, voter contact shifts, and finally, reports filed on the number of conversations our volunteers had and what they learned through their conversation — how is your contact voting? Who are they voting for? Tracking reports on conversations vs. just ‘messages sent’ was critical to ensure conversations were actually happening — and *empowered* volunteers to reach out to their people however they felt comfortable. Volunteers didn’t need to use Vote Joe to have their conversations. They could do so via phone, social media, or text message, and simply use the Vote Joe app to report back to the campaign.” “As a series of principles, distributed organizing programs organize and train teams of volunteer leadership, *empower* volunteers to act now from wherever they may be, and build out new technical tools and solutions to engage in big, structural organizing.” “While the line between ‘Distributed’ and organizing is ultimately artificial, the impact of organizing programs that radically trust and *empower* volunteer leadership is anything but. Distributed programs should not be looked on as something distinct from the long tradition of organizing. The practice, and the vision, of hundreds of thousands of volunteers and organizers making up a distributed program, is just one part of a long organizing tradition.” Actually, now that I think about it, Rifkin isn’t entirely wrong about where this kind of organizing fits into the labor tradition. It’s a form of hierarchical organizing that many labor activists may indeed recognize, the one where power flows upward into the hands of a few leaders and decisions are delivered downward, with little to no participation from the rank-and-file in those decisions. So, I’m not as enthusiastic as he seems to be about the prospects of campaigns getting better at this kind of organizing. It’s very Zoom webinar with the chat disabled, if you get my drift. All that said, I’m happy to see that Rifkin has started his own newsletter, The Distro <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVkM2OhSAMhZ_msjSA8uOCxWzmNQw_VclFMFhn4t…>. His bio reads, “Chasing utopian futures. Director of Distributed Organizing @JoeBiden & @TheDemocrats. Was @ewarren. @IronStache, @HFA, @Bernie2016 & more. We too easily write off a lack of engagement from voters as a lack of interest in the values that we stand for. Instead, our party, perhaps from the pressure of First in the Nation or to impress donors, has calculated with surgical precision a plan for who gets a door knock, a mail piece, a call — and who does not.” Likewise, this story <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwlkEGOhCAQRU_T7DSAgLhgMZu5hkGoVtIIBsrpeP…> in the Washington Monthly by *Gabby Birenbaum* suggests the key to the revival of Democrats in Orange County, California—a longtime Republican stronghold—has been the growth of local clubs. --A coalition of advocacy organizations led by Accountable Tech have sent an open letter <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJwtUMtuhDAM_JrNrSgPSMIhh730N1BwvBAtJCiYVv…> to the Biden transition urging it to “to treat disinformation as a fundamental and intersectional threat – one that stands as a barrier to progress on every issue.” Among the letter’s good recommendations: pushing Congress to revive the Office of Technology Assessment, putting online voter suppression on an equal footing with offline; and appointing a disinformation expert to the COVID-19 taskforce. Whether that means improving your archiving and inventories, working with multiple platforms, handling online sales and accounting, using social media, online marketing and communications or something else, we (Kendraio and CultureBanked) would like to initially interview 10 artists about their online habits and needs to see how we can work together. Currently we have resources to work directly with users and have opportunities for artists to develop useful and powerful tools according to their own purposes. There is no charge to the artist and all we require is a commitment of an initial hour for the interview plus any further time spent working on developing your own stuff! I'd be really grateful if you would forward this email to any artists or contacts you think might be interested and thanks for reading. As you may know, CECOP released a report titled ALL FOR ONE <https://cecop.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3a463471cd0a9c6cf744bf5f8&i…> that shows the contributions made by worker-owned cooperatives to the issues related to non-standard employment, such as precariousness, low income, insufficient social security coverage and workers’ isolation. Originally planned through a live conference, our promotion effort was transformed into a pandemic-proof dissemination strategy: an online campaign topped with an online conference. *The campaign* We had a month-long communication campaign on social media, in which we conveyed the key political messages of the report through several visuals containing quotes from CECOP members (#CECOPvoices), and a three-part docuseries <https://cecop.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3a463471cd0a9c6cf744bf5f8&i…> . The protagonists of our docuseries are Tommi Viitamies, from Lilith Cooperative (Finland), Francesca Martinelli, researcher on platform coops, from Fondazione Centro Studi Doc (Italy), and CECOP President Giuseppe Guerini. If you haven't had the chance to watch it, we highly recommend it! Would you like to see all of our visuals released during the campaign? We made an album! Take a look at it here <https://cecop.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3a463471cd0a9c6cf744bf5f8&i…> . *The conference* Our flagship conference happened on December 3rd. We discussed strategies undertaken by several worker-owned cooperative models and their reactions to the challenges of non-standard work. We had some great active speakers, and more than 100 participants from all over Europe. It was surely an event to remember. Did you miss it? You can read all about it here <https://cecop.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3a463471cd0a9c6cf744bf5f8&i…> . That is all for now. We would like to thank all of our speakers, *Sara Lafuente* (European Trade Union Institute),* Sarah de Heusch* (Smart Belgium), *Noémie de Grenier* (Coopaname France), *Paloma Arroyo* (COCETA Spain), *Anna Banczyk* (European Commission), *Giuseppe Guerini* (CECOP President), and each and everyone of you for following our campaign and participating in our conference. Stay tuned, we look forward to seeing you in the new year. Sincerely, The CECOP team. Could it be that the > sustainability of empires, in particular the Portuguese multicontinental > overseas empire, are based on the commoners and their entrepreneurial > initiatives as much as on central powers policies, military and commercial > strategies?
