Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Or take the time and read some very old documented evidence available at a library near you= but you may need to stay there awhile on microfiche. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Janssen Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 4:39 PM To: P2P Foundation mailing list Subject: Re: [P2P-F] Fw: Info On Sun, Oct 23, 2011 at 10:32 AM, Natalie Golovin <10natalie(a)cox.net> wrote: > The European Tribes treated the Natives no worse than they treated each > other. Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. Fwd: Bank Bail-Ins -

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Chris Quigley <cmqesquire(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Dec 30, 2015 at 6:48 PM Subject: Fwd: Bank Bail-Ins - To: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Michel, For your attention. Kind regards, Christopher *A Crisis Worse than ISIS? Bank Bail-Ins Begin*Politics <http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Topic9.html> / Banking Stocks <http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/News-catid-137.html>Dec 29, 2015 - 06:12 PM GMT By: Ellen_Brown <http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/UserInfo-Ellen_Brown.html> [image: Politics] <http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Topic9.html> At the end of November, an Italian pensioner hanged himself <http://www.thelocal.it/20151211/italy-moves-to-bail-out-savers-hit-by-bank-…> after his entire €100,000 savings were confiscated in a bank “rescue” scheme. He left a suicide note blaming the bank, where he had been a customer for 50 years and had invested in bank-issued bonds. But he might better have blamed the EU and the G20’s Financial Stability Board, which have imposed an “Orderly Resolution” regime that keeps insolvent banks afloat by confiscating the savings of investors and depositors. Some 130,000 shareholders and junior bond holders suffered losses in the “rescue.” The pensioner’s bank was one of four small regional banks that had been put under special administration over the past two years. The €3.6 billion ($3.83 billion) rescue plan launched by the Italian government uses a newly-formed National Resolution Fund, which is fed by the country’s healthy banks. But before the fund can be tapped, losses must be imposed on investors; and in January, EU rules will require that they also be imposed on depositors. According to a December 10th article on BBC.com <http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35062239>: The rescue was a “bail-in” – meaning bondholders suffered losses – unlike the hugely unpopular bank bailouts during the 2008 financial crisis, which cost ordinary EU taxpayers tens of billions of euros. Correspondents say [Italian Prime Minister] Renzi acted quickly because in January, the EU is tightening the rules on bank rescues – *they will force losses on depositors holding more than €100,000*, as well as bank shareholders and bondholders*.* . . . [L]etting the four banks fail under those new EU rules next year would have meant “sacrificing the money of one million savers and the jobs of nearly 6,000 people”. That is what is predicted for 2016: massive sacrifice of savings and jobs to prop up a “systemically risky” global banking scheme. *Bail-in Under Dodd-Frank* That is all happening in the EU. Is there reason for concern in the US? According to former hedge fund manager Shah Gilani, writing for *Money Morning*, there is. In a November 30th article titled “Why I’m Closing My Bank Accounts While I Still Can <http://moneymorning.com/2015/11/30/why-im-closing-my-bank-accounts-while-i-…>,” he writes: [It is] entirely possible in the next banking crisis that depositors in giant too-big-to-fail failing banks could have their money confiscated and turned into equity shares. . . . If your too-big-to-fail (TBTF) bank is failing because they can’t pay off derivative bets they made, and the government refuses to bail them out, under a mandate titled “Adequacy of Loss-Absorbing Capacity of Global Systemically Important Banks in Resolution,” approved on Nov. 16, 2014, by the G20’s Financial Stability Board, they can take your deposited money and turn it into shares of equity capital to try and keep your TBTF bank from failing. Once your money is deposited in the bank, it legally becomes the property of the bank. Gilani explains: Your deposited cash is an unsecured debt obligation of your bank. It owes you that money back. If you bank with one of the country’s biggest banks, who collectively have trillions of dollars of derivatives they hold “off balance sheet” (meaning those debts aren’t recorded on banks’ GAAP balance sheets), those debt bets have a superior legal standing to your deposits and get paid back before you get any of your cash. . . . Big banks got that language inserted into the 2010 Dodd-Frank law meant to rein in dangerous bank behavior. The banks inserted the language and the legislators signed it, without necessarily understanding it or even reading it. At over 2,300 pages and still growing, the Dodd Frank Act is currently the longest and most complicated bill ever passed by the US legislature. *Propping Up the Derivatives Scheme* Dodd-Frank states in its preamble that it will “protect the American taxpayer by ending bailouts.” But it does this under Title II by imposing the losses of insolvent financial companies on their common and preferred stockholders, debtholders, and other unsecured creditors. That includes depositors, the largest class of unsecured creditor of any bank. Title II is aimed at “ensuring that payout to claimants <http://www.larouchepub.com/other/2013/4022dodd_frank_us_bailin.html> is at least as much as the claimants would have received under bankruptcy liquidation.” But here’s the catch: under both the Dodd Frank Act and the 2005 Bankruptcy Act, *derivative claims have super-priority over all other claims <http://www.thedeal.com/thedealeconomy/the-case-against-favored-treatment-of…>, *secured and unsecured, insured and uninsured. The over-the-counter (OTC) derivative market <http://www.fimarkets.com/pagesen/OTC_derivatives_CCP.php> (the largest market for derivatives) is made up of banks and other highly sophisticated players such as hedge funds. OTC derivatives are the bets of these financial players against each other. Derivative claims are considered “secured” because collateral is posted by the parties. For some inexplicable reason, the hard-earned money you deposit in the bank is not considered “security” or “collateral.” It is just a loan to the bank, and you must stand in line along with the other creditors in hopes of getting it back. State and local governments must also stand in line, although their deposits are considered “secured,” since they remain junior to the derivative claims with “super-priority.” *Turning Bankruptcy on Its Head* Under the old liquidation rules, an insolvent bank was actually “liquidated” – its assets were sold off to repay depositors and creditors. Under an “orderly resolution,” the accounts of depositors and creditors are emptied to keep the insolvent bank in business. The point of an “orderly resolution” is not to make depositors and creditors whole but to prevent another system-wide “disorderly resolution” of the sort that followed the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008. The concern is that pulling a few of the dominoes from the fragile edifice that is our derivatives-laden global banking system will collapse the entire scheme. The sufferings of depositors and investors are just the sacrifices to be borne to maintain this highly lucrative edifice. In a May 2013 article in Forbes titled “The Cyprus Bank ‘Bail-In’ Is Another Crony Bankster Scam <http://www.forbes.com/sites/nathanlewis/2013/05/03/the-cyprus-bank-bail-in-…>,” Nathan Lewis explained the scheme like this: At first glance, the “bail-in” resembles the normal capitalist process of liabilities restructuring that should occur when a bank becomes insolvent. . . . The difference with the “bail-in” is that the order of creditor seniority is changed. In the end, it amounts to the cronies (other banks and government) and non-cronies. The cronies get 100% or more; the non-cronies, including non-interest-bearing depositors who should be super-senior, get a kick in the guts instead. . . . In principle, depositors are the most senior creditors in a bank. However, that was changed in the 2005 bankruptcy law, which made derivatives liabilities most senior. Considering the extreme levels of derivatives liabilities that many large banks have, and the opportunity to stuff any bank with derivatives liabilities in the last moment, other creditors could easily find there is nothing left for them at all. As of September 2014, US derivatives had a notional value of nearly $280 trillion. A study involving the cost to taxpayers of the Dodd-Frank rollback slipped by Citibank into the “cromnibus” spending bill last December found that the rule reversal allowed banks to keep $10 trillion in swaps trades on their books. This is money that taxpayers could be on the hook for in another bailout; and since Dodd-Frank replaces bailouts with bail-ins, it is money that creditors and depositors could now be on the hook for. Citibank is particularly vulnerable <http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-01-05/citi-next-aig-70-trillion-reasons-…> to swaps on the price of oil. Brent crude dropped from a high of $114 per barrel in June 2014 to a low of $36 in December 2015. What about FDIC insurance? It covers deposits up to $250,000, but the FDIC fund had only $67.6 billion <https://www.fdic.gov/news/news/speeches/spsep0215.html> in it as of June 30, 2015, insuring about $6.35 trillion in deposits. The FDIC has a credit line with the Treasury, but even that only goes to $500 billion; and who would pay that massive loan back? The FDIC fund, too, must stand in line behind the bottomless black hole of derivatives liabilities. As Yves Smith observed <http://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2013/03/when-you-werent-looking-democrat-ban…> in a March 2013 post: In the US, depositors have actually been put in a worse position than Cyprus deposit-holders, at least if they are at the big banks that play in the derivatives casino. The regulators have turned a blind eye as banks use their depositors to fund derivatives exposures. . . . The deposits are now subject to being wiped out by a major derivatives loss. Even in the worst of the Great Depression bank bankruptcies, noted Nathan Lewis, creditors eventually recovered nearly all of their money. He concluded: When super-senior depositors have huge losses of 50% or more, after a “bail-in” restructuring, you know that a crime was committed. *Exiting While We Can* How can you avoid this criminal theft and keep your money safe? It may be too late to pull your savings out of the bank and stuff them under a mattress, as Shah Gilani found when he tried to withdraw a few thousand dollars from his bank. Large withdrawals are now criminally suspect. You can move your money into one of the credit unions with their own deposit insurance protection; but credit unions and their insurance plans are also under attack. So writes Frances Coppola in a December 18th article titled “Co-operative Banking Under Attack in Europe <http://www.thenews.coop/100177/news/banking-and-insurance/co-operative-bank…>,” discussing an insolvent Spanish credit union that was the subject of a bail-in in July 2015. When the member-investors were subsequently made whole by the credit union’s private insurance group, there were complaints that the rescue “undermined the principle of creditor bail-in” – this although the insurance fund was privately financed. Critics argued that “this still looks like a circuitous way to do what was initially planned, i.e. to avoid placing losses on private creditors.” In short, the *goal* of the bail-in scheme is to place losses on private creditors. Alternatives that allow them to escape could soon be blocked. We need to lean on our legislators to change the rules before it is too late. The Dodd Frank Act and the Bankruptcy Reform Act both need a radical overhaul, and the Glass-Steagall Act (which put a fire wall between risky investments and bank deposits) needs to be reinstated. Meanwhile, local legislators would do well to set up some publicly-owned banks on the model of the state-owned Bank of North Dakota – banks that do not gamble in derivatives and are safe places to store our public and private funds. Ellen Brown developed her research skills as an attorney practicing civil litigation in Los Angeles. In Web of Debt, her latest book, she turns those skills to an analysis of the Federal Reserve and “the money trust.” She shows how this private cartel has usurped the power to create money from the people themselves, and how we the people can get it back. Her earlier books focused on the pharmaceutical cartel that gets its power from “the money trust.” Her eleven books include Forbidden Medicine, Nature’s Pharmacy (co-authored with Dr. Lynne Walker), and The Key to Ultimate Health (co-authored with Dr. Richard Hansen). But the 'how' of doing it is as important as doing it, and specifically, we need to move from extractive forms of investment and capture, to generative forms that co-create common goods with the user communities. This is hardly the case with the dominant forces in the often mis-named sharing economy, which is often just about renting and selling. Facebook for example does not share any of its profits with the user communities that creates its value, the uber and airbnb's are actively undermining all social protection and solidarity mechanisms that took 200 years to build, and much crowdsourcing is about pitting individual workers against each other, and bringing down wages and income, rather than stimulating cooperation. So we must more actively look for authentic sharing practices and co-generative forms of mutualization, which we can find in sources like Shareable, the Sustainable Economies Law Center and observatories like the P2P Foundation." > > -- > http://www.twitter.com/sethporges > > -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/ -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Theodoros Karyotis <tkaryotis(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, Dec 10, 2015 at 9:02 PM Subject: Article: Chronicles of a defeat foretold To: Dear friends, find below a detailed (and long overdue) account of the relationship of the governing party with the social movements in Greece. It was written just before the September elections, but the main arguments still hold true today. Feel free to send me your comments or objections. It was just published on the revamped website of ROAR Magazine: https://roarmag.org/magazine/syriza-movements-power-commons/ As well as on the inaugural issue #0 of ROAR´s print edition, pp 34-62 https://roarmag.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/ROAR-Issue-0.pdf In its 5 years of existence, ROAR magazine has become the definitive source of analysis and commentary from the point of view of direct democracy, autonomy and the grassroots. Sustained by hundreds of activist writers around the world, it maintains a radical edge and a bottom-up perspective while it manages to avoid ideological entrenchment. It covers extensively issues of popular resistance, grassroots alternatives, immigration, ecology, alternative economies and the commons without shying away from issues such as geopolitics, technology, electoral politics and macroeconomics. I am really happy to have contributed an article to the visually stunning issue #0 among friends and comrades such as Marina Sitrin, John Holloway, Oscar Olivera, Jerome Roos, Leonidas Oikonomakis and other respected thinkers such as Janet Biehl, David Harvey and Michael Hardt. Fwd: New FSF campaign? Pledge to only fund and create free software and free content

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Paul D. Fernhout <pdfernhout(a)kurtz-fernhout.com> Date: Tue, Dec 29, 2015 at 2:34 AM Subject: New FSF campaign? Pledge to only fund and create free software and free content To: Richard Stallman <rms(a)gnu.org> Cc: campaigns(a)fsf.org, Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Richard- The FSF could start a new campaign to get foundations and non-profits to pledge that all content and software they fund or develop for the public using charitable or public dollars will be released under free licenses. One by one, foundations and non-profits could be approached and asked to commit to a pledge similar to the following: "Our organization, ______, pledges to our our stakeholders and the people of the world that from this date forward, ________, whenever we use charitable or public dollars to fund or create any new content, software, or any other sort of copyrightable or patentable materials intended for public distribution and public use (or substantially modify existing public content), we will ensure those works will be distributed to the public under free/libre licenses. Free/libre licenses means those who receive the works have the freedom to use, run, copy, study, change, improve, redistribute, and/or distribute modified versions of the works without paying additional fees or obtaining additional permissions." If the organization is not willing to sign the pledge, then that fact could be made known as well, along with their reasons. The FSF would keep such a list publicly available on its website of organizations that have been approached (and the date) and their responses (including the date they took the pledge or the reason for their refusal). The FSF could recommend people only donate money to such organizations as have made that pledge. For non-profits already committed to making free works, being on this list would be a good way to advertise that fact. With trillions of dollars expected to pour into foundations soon, this campaign might make a huge difference in funding for those who want to work on free/libre works. More details are at the below link if you are interested, including one reason why the FSF would probably not sign that pledge as is, and suggestions as to how it could be further improved. http://www.pdfernhout.net/pledge-to-only-fund-and-create-free-works.html I CC'd Michel Bauwens because recent discussions with him helped spark this (as have recent discussions with you). --Paul Fernhout http://www.pdfernhout.net/ ==== The biggest challenge of the 21st century is the irony of technologies of abundance in the hands of those still thinking in terms of scarcity. -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

The authors suggest that in order to ensure that human society and civilization can successfully respond to human induced climate change it is necessary to dig deeper into the lives and the work of those who now live without equal rights or land ownership. Could looking further back in historical precedent lead to greater justice and replace the tragedy of the commons with “The Promise of the Commons”. Please, feel free to disseminate it (thanks!): Call for Papers: Decentralizing the Commons We are witnessing today a steady growth in the impact of user-generated content and peer-production on the so-called sharing or collaborative economy. These emergent practices are an indicator of radical changes in the mode of production in an age of ‘prosumerism’, characterized by two main trends. On the one hand, corporations such as Google, Uber or Facebook are capturing the value created by the actors contributing to the collaborative economy, in a way that has been described by some scholars as an exploitation of free labour. On the other hand, projects such as Wikipedia or GNU/Linux are emblematic of a new model of production that relies on the contribution of many individuals collaborating to a collective project that is not owned by any given entity but rather by the community as a whole (Commons-Based Peer Production or CBPP). These individuals organise themselves without relying on traditional hierarchical and mercantile organisational structures, to produce a set of commons resources which are made freely available to the public for use and reuse. In the last few years, CBPP has expanded beyond the field of software and encyclopedias to also cover the realms of information (OpenStreetMap, Wikihow), hardware (FabLabs, Open Source Ecology), accommodation (Couchsurfing, BeWelcome) and currency (Bitcoin, Altcoins). The concept of decentralisation is a key requisite for the protection of thesecommons — from their governance system, including the allocation of power and functions in the organisation of labour; to the characteristics of the socio-technical means of collaboration, in terms of both the underlying technical infrastructure and the ownership structure of such infrastructure. Despite the original design of the Internet as a decentralized network, with the advent of the Web 2.0, centralized (and often proprietary) platforms — typically driven by corporate interests — have progressively taken over the web. These centralized choke-points can be used by governments to increase surveillance (as disclosed by the Snowden revelations), to blackout the Internet (e.g. Egypt, Syria, or San Francisco’s BART), or to restrict the activities of activist organizations (such as Wikileaks). It has now become clear that it is not enough to develop free/libre/open source (FLOSS)alternatives, if we do not as well endeavor to re-decentralize the Internet. Newdecentralized software tools may ultimately be useful to support the operation and the long-term sustainability of CBPP communities. In view of this, we organised the second FLOSS4P2P workshop <http://www.p2pvalue.eu/2nd-floss4p2p-workshop> (@Fablab London, supported by P2Pvalue <http://p2pvalue.eu/>), gathering a wide spectrum of people working ondecentralized FLOSS projects that could help or support the activities of peer production communities. Given the success of the workshop <http://p2pvalue.eu/floss4p2p-workshop-agenda>, we would like to prepare a book in collaboration with the Institute of Network Cultures <http://networkcultures.org/> (on the model of the former MoneyLab Reader <http://networkcultures.org/blog/publication/moneylab-reader-an-intervention…>) to explore the topic of decentralisation in thecommons sector. We welcome proposals from academics, activists, researchers and practitioners interested in exploring the topic from a wide set of perspectives, ranging from computer science, engineering, sociology, philosophy, organisational theory, cultural studies, digital studies, etc. Contributions can cover a variety of topics, including tools for grassroots communities, commons-based peer production, both online and offline wikis, maker culture, activism, hacktivism, free culture, citizen science and hospitality exchange. Contributions can take a variety of formats, e.g. a story, a sci-fi tale, a comicstrip, a manifesto, a critical essay, an interview, a study, a poem, a conversation, a debate, a combination of the former… we would like you to experiment and surprise us! We invite you to submit an initial abstract (max. 750w; count each image as 200w, if any) explaining your idea by January 30, 2016. Examples of possible topics are: - Dynamics of (de)centralization in CBPP communities - Decentralized software applications for online/offline communities - Decentralized solutions to tackle specific communities concerns - Guidelines for developers and/or researchers - Comparison of centralized/decentralized processes in CBPP (e.g. decision-making, infrastructure ownership, value generation, value distribution) - Practical experiences around centralized/decentralized structures (in the form of stories, research, interview, etc.) The more compelling ideas will be selected to be included in the book. Please upload your contribution using the following Easychair link: <https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=floss4p2p> https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=floss4p2p If you have further questions about the expected content, format, etc. do not hesitate to let us know. We look forward to hearing about your ideas!
