Fwd: <nettime> Hackademia summer school, application due Jan 4th, funding available

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Gabriella "Biella" Coleman <enid.coleman(a)mcgill.ca> Date: 23 December 2015 at 20:13 Subject: <nettime> Hackademia summer school, application due Jan 4th, funding available To: nettime-l(a)kein.org Hi, The application deadline for the hacker studies summer school is fast approaching. Please share widely. Thanks! All best, Gabriella -------- http://www.leuphana.de/en/research-centers/cdc/digital-cultures-research-la… Call For Participants Hackademia: empirical studies in computing cultures A Digital Cultures Research Lab (DCRL) Summer School August 28^th - September 2^nd, 2016 Leuphana University Curated by Paula Bialski, Leuphana University Gabriella Coleman, McGill University Marcell Mars, Leuphana University Background Studying digital media today means studying those technologists--hackers, security resarchers, game developers, system administrators, and designers--who create and maintain the digital worlds we live in. How much agency lies in the hands of programmers, coders, and engineers to create our digital worlds is still up for debate, yet this much is true: various hacking and related subcultures form critical nodes of practice that help shape and condition the contemporary technologies we use everyday. Whether it is an analyst or coder implementing algorithms at a large financial institution, a group of designers working on improving the user interface for a cryptographic tool, a privacy team securing a browser, a developer coding her own app, cryptographers working on an open source anoymized system, a programmer working on a p2p file-sharing platform, hackers buying and selling zero days in a grey market, a team of system administrators at Google working to scale up services, a journalist-coder developing visualization tools, indie game developers seeking to write a politically minded game, or a hacker-leaker whistleblowing to salavage privacy - all have something to say about how digital technology can and should be created. These technology workers/experts are now central to every field of social, political, and economic import. They secure our communications networks; shape the design and portals we use to connect to our banks, our friends, our loved ones, our colleagues, our business partners; inform us about the activities of our governments; design novel currencies; exfiltrate intellectual property and proof of wrongdoing from corporate actors; offer us alternative ways of organizing our political voices whether through political projects or games; function as conduits and warriors between nations; and allow us to confront the laws we don't like - through democratic engagements, as in the Free Software movement, or tools that enable outright circumvention. This is an ideal time to understand and ultimately appraise their activities, actions, their desires, and intentions. While an increasing number of scholars - ethnographers, cultural anthropologists, sociologists, and media historians - are undertaking the study of hacker cultures, there are many methodological questions to pose and explore: How much technical knowledge is necessary to study the worlds of computing and programming? How does one gain access to secret nooks of hacking or corporate sites - whether a security company, gaming outfit, or blackhat computer forum - where codes, designers, and hackers labor? How is the study of hackers similar and different to the study of other experts such as scientists? As participant observers, how can we fully understand the engineering culture of the hackers we are studying, and what shortcuts in our methods must be taken in order to create an understanding? Who Should Apply? This summer school invites doctoral students in the field of ethnography, cultural anthropology, media studies, software studies, sociology, science, technology studies, history, or other, who are currently working on a dissertation on the life-worlds, practices, cultures, or platforms of hackers. Hackers here are understood broadly as programmers, coders, pirates, and computer engineers of all shapes and forms - and do not necessarily have to be engaged in illegal or subversive activity or self identify as hackers. Applicants who are struggling with field entry, are learning to code, or seek to expand their methods, are particularly welcome. Who Will Attend? This summer school will provide a dialogue between hackers and academics. As such, we will additionally invite a number of hackers, coders, programmers, and technologists. These guests will lead sessions around the topic of field entrance, knowledge transfer, work organization and hacker communication practices, feminist critiques, and standards/protocols. Keynote speakers will also provide evening lectures, and help lead sessions. Where and when will this take place? The Hackademia summer school will take place at the Digital Cultures Research Lab (DCRL), Leuphana University in Luneburg, Germany (30 minutes away from Hamburg), between August 28^th - September 2^nd, 2016. How to apply: Please submit your CV along with a 500-word abstract of your dissertation, and a 500-word explanation on why you would like to attend this summer school. The deadline for applications for the summer school is January 4th, 2016. Please email your applications (compile into one PDF) to bialski(a)leuphana.de All applicants will be informed about the selection of participants in mid-February. The working language of the summer school will be English; therefore, a sufficient understanding of English is expected. There is no participation fee. The organizers will cover accommodation costs. We have a limited amount of need-based travel funding available. Please indicate in your application letter if you wish to apply for travel funding. Fwd: social-semantic networking
by Michel Bauwens 24 Dec '15

24 Dec '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Eric Hunting <erichunting(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Dec 21, 2015 at 12:09 AM Subject: Re: social-semantic networking To: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> I don't have an active login for the wiki or blog site so if it's OK I'll write a piece in email. Social-Semantic Networking: What is the future of social interaction and organization on the Internet? What comes after Facebook and Twitter? One possibility is the Social-Semantic Network as explored in projects like Netention. A Social-Semantic Network is the application of Semantic Web technology to the coordination of human connections, exchanges, and communication through the automated association of personal information. It could become the 'killer app' that justifies the creation of the Semantic Web. The Semantic Web is the anticipated future basis of information storage on the Internet. It functions by creating 'metadata' to accompany information as it is entered into the on-line environment so that this information can be automatically associated with related information by passive distributed intelligence. It's as though everything you write or store on-line automatically synthesizes links to everything else that logically relates to it. So, in the future, instead of finding things on-line using a search engine like Google and having to sift through long lists to figure out what's really relevant, those things find you by virtue of the automatic associations the Semantic Web is forever cultivating like a collective, active, memory. The user interface to this environment is called a Semantic Desktop hosting various applications to work with the Semantic Web in specific ways, much like an operating system but one designed with the Internet and the future web as its primary environment. One might characterize it as like a very personal Google integrated into your personal computing environment. Curiously, the Internet is fast becoming the primary environment in which we do just about everything with computers, our data storage increasingly cloud-based and applications increasingly net-dependent if not web-based. Eventually, it might even become Blockchain-based. A unified encrypted global cloud. Yet for some reason our old-fashioned computers still use the Internet through an application--a web browser--rather than fully integrating the data environment of the Internet into theirs. This is likely to change and the Semantic Desktop may be one form this takes. Netention is an exploration of a possible Semantic Desktop platform. A Social-Semantic Network is intended to create a semantic web across a community of people by first creating private semantic webs of individual personal information. It builds this in a variety of ways; through interaction in the network or with its various services, through communication between users privately or publicly, through various kinds of public or private personal records (like school records and digital shopping receipts), through personal diaries, through the information collected by Smart Devices in the habitat, and through procedurally-generated questionnaires. Perhaps one day even through casual conversation with voice controlled digital assistants and personal digital companion characters. Because much of this information is sensitive it will be kept private and likely encrypted, but the metadata automatically generated with it will be open across the Semantic Web. Using this, the Social-Semantic Network can seek associations between personal information webs and connections and convergences between people and other on-line resources, businesses, and services. Having found these connections, it can facilitate, and in some cases automate, communication and exchange between them. On a simple level this can take the form of a smart newspaper that can push articles of interest to your desktop. It might help you find a restaurant or doctor. Or it might do things like auto-manage your grocery shopping list and link to on-line shopping. It might help manage your health and use of prescription medicine. Or it might link your ever-changing personal work and travel schedule to your self-driving automobile, or the ticket sales of railways and airlines, or the registration for hotels or future ' albergo diffuso'. It might take the form of a conventional social media platform like Facebook but one where the choice of front-page posts are automatically managed by mutual associations--common interests. It might take the form of group project or activity management systems to coordinate group activity/activism across the globe. It might form the basis of an Open Value Network. It might automate the dynamic linking of networked production chains and smart contracts to suit on-demand production of products. The potential uses are endless. But on a deeper level the Social-Semantic Network can come to understand a person's emotional state, quality of life, personal needs, life goals, personal development, and intentions. (hence the name Netention) It's like an Internet that knows you as a person. It can likewise develop a model of the state of society, their collective opinions, interests, and intentions. Like a system of direct democracy that's silently polling everyone about everything. It can know the mind of the public like no politician ever has. And so, functioning like the ideally wise butler (the ultimate Jeeves), it can seek out information and associations across that larger social information web--across the world--that are beneficial or, ideally, mutually beneficial and subtly push information to the user that helps them make those usually random social connections to meet their needs, goals, and intentions. Cybernetic Pronoia--a secret digital conspiracy that's out to help you and everyone else. The power of the Semantic Web is that it doesn't just collect and store information. Through auto-association, it builds knowledge. It doesn't just 'parse' data. It 'reads' information and can apply it. And it doesn't need some active artificial intelligence to do that because its relying on a distributed intelligence built on simple rules and the weighted associations across information. When you create your personal semantic web you're creating something rather like a natural language rule table that describes who you are and defines how you relate to the rest of the social network and the larger Semantic Web. A digital identity within a digital community facilitating your activity within a Smart Habitat. The potential impacts of this on civilization itself could be profound. A Social-Semantic Network could evolve to play Buckminster Fuller's World Game from the global level right down to the personal level. A Digital Tao.

I would challenge the generic quality of just positing social commons without actually working out what it means, they may be unpredictable in its fullness but one should not disregard the seed forms that can be seen in the "commonfare" being developed by precarious workers today, see http://p2pfoundation.net/Category:P2P_Solidarity for different examples of such activities, in particular, the french-language report by saw-b on 'labor mutuals' is very revealing, and Pat Conaty is preparing a full english report on the topic Michel On Thu, Dec 24, 2015 at 8:39 AM, Kevin Flanagan <kev.flanagan(a)gmail.com> wrote: > > ---------- Forwarded message ---------- > From: Francine Mestrum <mestrum(a)skynet.be> > Date: 6 October 2015 at 10:33 > Subject: [global social commons discussion] NEW e-BOOK: From Social > Protection to Social Commons - www.socialcommons.eu - Eng-Fr-Dutch-Esp > To: globalsocialcommons-discussion(a)lists.openfsm.net > > > From social protection to the social commons > > Social protection is high on the international political agenda to-day. > > In 2012 the International Labour Organisation adopted a recommendation on > ‘social protection floors’. Fwd: [global social commons discussion] NEW e-BOOK: From Social Protection to Social Commons - www.socialcommons.eu - Eng-Fr-Dutch-Esp

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Francine Mestrum <mestrum(a)skynet.be> Date: 6 October 2015 at 10:33 Subject: [global social commons discussion] NEW e-BOOK: From Social Protection to Social Commons - www.socialcommons.eu - Eng-Fr-Dutch-Esp To: globalsocialcommons-discussion(a)lists.openfsm.net >From social protection to the social commons Social protection is high on the international political agenda to-day. In 2012 the International Labour Organisation adopted a recommendation on ‘social protection floors’. One could think this is a minimalist agenda, but if all people all over the world had their rights respected, this would be a tremendous social progress. Social protection is indeed a human right, mentioned in the Universal Declaration on human rights and in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. Nevertheless, more ambition is called for. I would like to go beyond ‘the floors’ and propose a programme for a ‘social common’, for the North as well as for the South. Why? It is clear that when you start talking about social protection to young people, many do not pay attention. Social protection! Something of the past! Give me a job first, and do not bother me with things I do not need. And indeed, many young, healthy people do not need social protection right away, they do not need the solidarity of the rest of society, unless…, yes, unless they have a car or a labour accident, unless they are suddenly ill, unless they think about their future… Just imagine you have to pay out of your own pocket your stay in the hospital, or the books and the uniform for your kid that goes to school, or just imagine you barely earn enough to live and survive without being able to save anything for your old age. But it remains a challenge to present this protection system to young people in an attractive way, to explain what solidarity means, while most of the time they do want indeed to show solidarity but do not think of social protection in this way. It can help, then, to speak about ‘commons’, since this is something they know and support. Because yes, they do want to be responsible for their lives and the lives of other, they do want concrete solidarity instead of an abstract system they do not really understand. And of course, it would not be fair to present a system of ‘social commons’ without really changing the existing systems of social protection. In Western Europe, social protection systems are fifty or one hundred years old and they do not answer all today’s needs anymore. Society has changed and the economy has changed. This means that our social protection also has to change. It is no coincidence that some refer to it as being a ‘cathedral’ or ‘the biggest revolution of the 20th century’. It was an enormous achievement, but it is not fit for our times anymore, some barriers to economic and social rights have to be lifted. We should make a more coherent system. Citizens’ participation and contributions to these changes are crucial. That is why a concept of ‘social commons’ could be useful, a new name for a new and better system that offers more protection to more people. It is a fact that most people do not consider social protection to be theirs. They see it as a government programme, or something of the trade unions or some abstract and absent administration far away in the capital. While most of us pay into the system, through our wages and through our taxes. Social protection is ours and no one else’s. That is why a new concept of ‘social commons’ is more than welcome. These are three important reasons to *shift from social protection to social commons*. Add to this the fact that the existing social protection systems are currently threatened and are changing at any rate. It is changing because even in Western Europe there are austerity policies with cuts in social benefits and even social rights. These are neoliberal reforms that make people more vulnerable. But social protection is also threatened by the negotiations on free trade agreements that may liberalise the trade in services and expose them to international competition. Moreover, social protection is threatened by the advocates of the basic income grants, an individualistic and liberal solution that cannot co-exist with social protection. It would profoundly change the labour market and would seriously threaten our desire for more equality. What do ‘social commons’ mean? It is difficult to say what the social commons of the future will look like, since societies will have to shape them. It seems obvious to me that certain basic principles of our current social protection will have to be preserved, such as the respect for universal human rights, the non commoditization of social services, the horizontal solidarity of all with all. How and to what extent these principles have to be safeguarded will have to be decided on by societies. It would at any rate allow for people to be directly involved in the design and the monitoring of our social systems. People have to be aware that it is about their rights and that a democratic and participative approach is necessary. It has now become unacceptable that governments and parliaments decide, without even consulting the people. Societies have to examine what they want and what they do not want. Secondly, this democratic and participative co-decision making can help to preserve society itself. Neoliberalism leads to the atomisation of society, which, in the long term, threatens society and threatens solidarity. Thirdly, a discussion on social rights can possibly help to extend and broaden the rights. We all need protection, throughout our lives, and a serious re-examination of our social protection systems can help to make them more complete and more coherent. It is now not acceptable anymore to have everything depend on your labour market status. And is it not urgent to also include a couple of environmental rights, such as the right to water? Once one starts to reflect on these questions, it is easy to see that our economic system as well will have to change in order to protect the whole of society. Much has already been written on the new knowledge-economy that will create another type of labour market. And it is clear that an economic system that is driven only by profit-making, externalizing care and nature, can have no future. In other words, a social protection system alone certainly will not be able to change the economic system, but it can contribute to more serious reflections and to some first changes. Rethinking our economic system in a democratic way will most probably lead to the obvious truth that the economy has to be at the service of societies, has to produce goods and services societies need and want. In other words, the economy has to care for people. Which makes a full circle. The economy has to care for people, in the same way as environmental policies have to care for nature and as social policies have to care for people and for all of us. Care can become the central concept, care for people, for societies and for nature. Social commons, then, care for the sustainability of life. What these social commons will look like is unpredictable. It will depend on the power relations within society and on the democratic content of all rethinking. But it seems clear to me one will have to talk of the (un)conditionality of social benefits, of the individualisation of rights, of the length of working hours, of contributions and of taxes… What I want to make clear with this book is that social protection in no way is an instrument of capitalism, it is not a correction mechanism. Social protection can be a tool for systemic change, in a positive sense, caring for life. The social commons are a project for the long term, but to start at a moment when our welfare states are threatened and where social protection is at any rate on the international agenda, could be a clever strategic choice. It is something leftwing parties should think about, since what better strategy can one think of to convince people than a promise of more rights and more protection? ‘*The social Commons. Computer integrated tools hold particular historical ironies and contradictions: early introduction threatened skills, livelihoods and identities amongst manufacturing communities – while they are celebrated today as enabling agency, identities and communities for makers. Or do digital fabrication futures reinforce the automation, flexible specialisation, and globalised outsourcing documented by David Noble in the 1980s, and that has been a driver for the technology amongst manufacturing strategists since then? ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dan - Earthworker Cooperative <dmusil(a)earthworkercooperative.com.au> Date: Sun, Dec 20, 2015 at 10:21 AM Subject: 'Give Tanks' solar hot water solidarity for those who need it most Hi 'Commons Transition Coalition' Comrades, Glad to help get something coalescing with this in the new year! I also wanted to plug a holiday season solidarity economy project that the Earthworker project has launched (and which I mentioned Mindful Uprising event in Melbourne) *GIVE TANKS* The Earthworker Cooperative has launched the "Give Tanks" campaign <https://chuffed.org/project/givetanks>, *a crowdfund to get high-quality solar hot water systems into low-income housing*. The recently established Eureka’s Future Workers’ Cooperative, Australia's first worker-owned manufacturing cooperative, will manufacture the solar hot water tanks that will go into the low-income houses. Earthworker has partnered with a number of social housing organisations, including Aboriginal Housing Victoria and Common Equity Housing NSW, to install the systems into low-income households. By donating to the crowdfund *you will help support dignified, green jobs in Australian manufacturing, reduce bills for low-income earners, and be part of a collective effort to ensure a safe climate.* Help ensure that renewable energy technology is accessible to those that need it most, and build the cooperative economy in the process! *There's three ways to support this:* 1. *Visit* the crowdfund page <https://chuffed.org/project/givetanks%20>. Take two minutes to consider the campaign. 2. *Donate!* You can also donate on behalf of a loved one and give them a gift card. 3. *Promote* the campaign to your members/networks/friends/workplace etc. You can email them the link to the crowdfund page, invite people to the crowdfund page on Facebook <https://www.facebook.com/events/970135159719723/> or just talk to people about it. Every bit counts. https://chuffed.org/project/givetanks https://www.facebook.com/Earthworkercoop/ https://twitter.com/Earthworkercoop ------------------------- *Any help you can provide in sharing this campaign amongst your networks would be HUGELY appreciated*. Please feel free to copy and paste the info above to distribute, share our posts on social media, or please request any info or put people in touch with me. Thanks all. Thanks again to Richard, Laurent and Daryl for all your hard work on the Mindful Uprising People's Summit on Sunday in Melbourne. Thanks again of course to Michel! The whole weekend was inspiring and after many conversations with Michel and everyone in the community over three days (and for those that weren't there in person Sunday afternoon (Sam and others) we announced the formation of the Commons Transition Coalition to create a vehicle for aligned leadership and action for p2p, sharing/solidarity economy and commons-based groups in Australia and NZ (possibly beyond). Jose has agreed to provide a space for us to plan at Footscray Maker Lab in the new year (probably February) but in the mean time I am keen to create a url - what do people think of commonscoalition.org? It's very early days but the idea might be for chapters in Melbourne (Jose, Darren, Kirsten & Serenity + others), Adelaide (Sharon Ede), Sydney (Declan & Bronwen), Canberra (David Pecotic), Brisbane (Michelle Maloney) and NZ through the Enspiral crew (Sam Rye) and others. I am keen to hear your thoughts and appetite for creating a charter together over the Summer. Sharon would be great if you could share your experience in developing this with the Post Growth Institute. It would be good to field ideas for jumping straight into some of the core strategic functions that could be created - e.g. what systems could we leverage to support the circulation of our time, skills and energies? - a social ecology of the commons / commoners to share and support each other, mapping the commons, as well as exploring and defining our purpose, governance and resource needs. Please add your thoughts to this Google Doc <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VA48QO73141wD5lhsnxXWhlN7-y3snsp_pqkzqg…> as a starting point and let's schedule a group Skype over the next few weeks (and meal together soon for those in Melbourne!) I have also created a Facebook group <https://www.facebook.com/groups/1106718069348108/> which we can use for planning, updates and coordination. Down the track I'd imagine a Loomio group will also take shape. I look forward to co-creating the Coalition together with your ongoing participation and support!
