Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Or take the time and read some very old documented evidence available at a library near you= but you may need to stay there awhile on microfiche. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Janssen Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 4:39 PM To: P2P Foundation mailing list Subject: Re: [P2P-F] Fw: Info On Sun, Oct 23, 2011 at 10:32 AM, Natalie Golovin <10natalie(a)cox.net> wrote: > The European Tribes treated the Natives no worse than they treated each > other. Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. + Cosmolocalization Scrip ? Re: What happens when a state doesn't control its own monetary creation ?

Places / real economies like Greece ( although Estonia would also be an interesting place as its government already invested in blockchain database solutions ) could imho benefit from a state guaranteed Cosmolocalization Scrip https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrip For example, a government could decide to issue Scrip ( the state of California did issue IOU's, a few years back, that could be used to pay taxes ) and decide to spend it into existence in sectors of the local economy it could even decide to define and update ( using scripp in the form of a token / smart contract ), ideally to generate access to currency in parts of the economy that are under served in currency, and especially to enable services and production that can reduce dependency on imports and/or bootstrap sectors that could also lead to exports. It could also track usage of the scrip through analytics enabled by its tokens on its blockchain ( or holochain ? ) , understanding the effects and usage of the scrip. ( potentially anonymized ? ) This would fit perfectly within a Cosmolocalization narrative. Such a Scrip could also function so as to reduce paper work ( online accounts, digital payments ) and be adapted, not to replace Euros, but as a complementary currency. For example, imported goods might only have a percentage of the price of the good related to local services in cosmo scrip. The government(s) could also generate demand for the scrip by accepting it as a medium of tax payment. Although to avoid it replacing all euro tax income, the government(s - including regional or local ) could for example accept only a certain percentage of a persons or company's scrip as tax payment. Similarly to a dual complementary currency mode used for other goods. It could experiment at first with anything that is locally produced, and also start by allocating an addition to the current euro salary of government workers, in scrip. If successful, it could also enable loans in scrip, by local businesses that can use it to develop local production ( and ultimately reduce the need for imports ), and it can also strategically enable clusters of interdependent businesses that can benefit from each others services, and can also ultimately facilitate online markets and a c3 ( commercial credit circuit ) https://tradingeconomics.com/greece/balance-of-trade https://tradingeconomics.com/greece/current-account On Fri, Dec 28, 2018, 07:53 Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante(a)ecobytes.net wrote: > > Just brainstormed this on fb : > > As long as there are foreign currency reserves ( usually trade surplus vs > the currency ), the state could spend as much as it needs into creation, > and as long as this spending meets development it doesn't necessarily mean > inflation. > > Hyperinflation happens so as to reduce the capacity of each to buy > imported goods, in a situation of severe trade disbalance and a scarcity of > foreign reserves. Grassroots groups in Myanmar believe that the Vacant, Fallow and Virgin (VFV) Land Management Law passed in 2012 facilitated widespread land dispossession of rural population, especially of poor ethnic minorities, as well as internally displaced peoples and refugees. They also believe that the revised version of the 2012 VFV Law, dated September 2018, made the law even worse as it can potentially and very likely facilitate or legitimize further dispossession, could undermine serious attempts at peace-building, and is likely to criminalize rural poor people's land claims. Thus, it is very critical -- and urgent -- to support the voices of rural villagers, internally displaced peoples and refugees and their allies among civil society groups resisting the VFV Land Law – and their right to exercise their civil and political rights to resist without threat of retribution. Therefore, some of us in the international community have taken the initiative to gather support for the grassroots campaign in Myanmar. We have had a dynamic and exciting year and would like to share some of our highlights, publications and activities with you. To name just a few milestones of 2018: This year we opened an office in Amsterdam and started our campaign 'CommonsforEurope2019'. We published a policy paper on biomedical commons and access to medicines and a well-received paper about urban commons in Amsterdam and Berlin. Acknowledgement and recognition of the commons is increasingly becoming mainstream. This is good news, as it is a prerequisite for truly transitioning to social-ecological sustainable societies. But what does it mean to support and protect the commons? And how can we apply this model to different sectors? These are some of the questions we try to answer and engage with every day. Below you will see how we go about it. Projects <https://commonsnetwork.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e5c1f73ee4093c682…> *Health is crucial for everyone and should be treated a a common good. Fwd: Call for Papers - "From Economic Science Fictions to Labour as Commons"

The whole thing, really. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Dan Ozarow <d.ozarow(a)mdx.ac.uk> Date: Fri, Dec 14, 2018 at 12:39 PM Subject: Call for Papers - "From Economic Science Fictions to Labour as Commons" To: <ALTERNATIVES-TO-CAPITALISM(a)jiscmail.ac.uk> Call for Papers - "From Economic Science Fictions to Labour as Commons" Alternative Organisations and Transformative Practices (AOTP) Research Cluster Conference Keynote Speaker: Dr Dario Azzellini (ILR School at Cornell University) Conference Date: Friday 21st June 2019 CfP deadline: Monday 18th February 2019 Organised by: AOTP, Middlesex University, London https://alternativeorganisations.wordpress.com/ Alternative Organisations and Transformative Practices (AOTP) at Middlesex University, London is accepting submissions for our 1-day symposium in the summer at Hendon Town Hall (Committee Room 1) next to the campus. Paper abstracts of 250 words max are accepted, with a deadline by Monday 18th February 2019. We encourage submissions from academics of all stages in their career, including PhD students and overseas colleagues, although please be aware that we are unable to fund costs. Kindly email abstracts to the AOTP Coordinators, Dr Daniel Ozarow d.ozarow(a)mdx.ac.uk and Dr Nico Pizzolato n.pizzolato(a)mdx.ac.uk Background: The global crisis has elicited an acceleration of neoliberal capitalism that has been disastrous for labour. Austerity programmes, market flexibilisation, privatisation, venture capital takeovers of failing firms, casualization, the “gig” economy, and zero hour contracts have intensified the exploitative relationship between labour and capital and exacerbated worker alienation and precariousness. Both as an ideology and a set of practices, neoliberalism has recast capitalism as a pervasive narrative to be internalised and reproduced. In effect, as suggested by William Davies et al. in the edited anthology Economic Science Fictions (2018), capitalism might be reconceptualised as an eminently fictional form of how social life should be organised that bears little relations to the actual societal needs. For instance, economist Ha-Joon Chang explains how we come to believe that the existing economic reality is scientifically-grounded and ‘natural’, although in fact it is the product of ideologically-driven political decisions, technological change, or influence from institutions or external forces. If is economics is a form of fiction, how can labour emancipate itself from this fiction, return to its essence, and reclaim a non-fictional economy? Currently, around the globe we have seen the emergence of alternative, non-capitalist production models based on principles of worker democracy, self-management, horizontal decision-making that are emancipatory and solidaristic in nature. Sometimes the consequence of anti-neoliberal uprisings, they may be autonomous of, in direct conflict with, or co-opted by the state. The utopian visions they bring often inspire hope among broader populations or workers, as an alternative to the dystopian path that is often predicted. Diluted versions of such visions are even penetrating the mainstream, with the publication of the British Labour Party’s Alternative Models of Ownership (2017). Authors such as De Peuter and Dyer-Witheford (2010), Bollier and Helfrich (2012) and Azzellini (2016) propose a solution to this problem through the understanding of ‘labour as a commons’, located in the discussion of how commons can advance the transformation of social relations and society. This is only possible if labour power is no longer perceived of as the object of capital’s value practices, but as a collectively and sustainably managed resource for the benefit of society, obtained via social struggle and the cultivation of examples of forms of ‘labour as a commons’ that already exist in society (or those that have not yet formed). Call for Papers: This conference seeks to bring the two parallel literatures of ‘economic science fictions’ and ‘labour as commons’ into dialogue by inviting contributors to submit papers that investigate and analyse how can society move away from this dystopian economic science fiction via the practice of the labour commons. Papers should contribute to one of the three conference streams: 1) Alternative ways of organizing work, including organizations in the social or solidarity economy This stream includes research on workers-recovered companies, forms of democratic worker governance of enterprises, employee-ownership, cooperatives and other instances of self-management and self-activity. 2) Critiques of economic science fictions and conceptualisation of alternative theoretical frameworks for modes of work and property relationships, guided by the idea of commons. 3) Responses to emerging forms and control of work, including integration of new technologies and digitalisation This stream includes research on responses to how technology and digitalisation has reconfigured workplace organisation and the body social through intensified monitoring, surveillance and control . It includes also the impact of automation, cloud computing, big data and the Internet of Things on work systems and relations of production. Contributions are especially welcome if international, comparative or interdisciplinary in nature. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Birgit Daiber <bir.dai(a)hotmail.com> Date: Sun, Dec 23, 2018 at 2:38 PM Subject: [CommonGood] A journey to India To: commongood(a)listi.jpberlin.de <commongood(a)listi.jpberlin.de>, wichterich(a)femme-global.de <wichterich(a)femme-global.de>, hdeedat(a)gmail.com < hdeedat(a)gmail.com> Dear Friends and Colleagues, Invited by „Actionaid India“ I had the opportunity to participate in two outstanding events: 1. „Actionschool“ organised on the Campus of “Osmania University” in Hyderabad. Young researchers, activists together and experts discuss in a three weeks’ seminar issues of basic interest. I had the opportunity to participate one week in the seminar and 2. a conference in New Delhi on 200 years of Karl Marx and the commemoration of Samir Amin, who passed away in August. *(1)* This year’s Actionschool subject was “*Urban Commons and Right to the City“: * “The course unpacked what constitutes Urban Commons, and how the understanding of the concept can be applied in the context of cities and urban spaces. The course used the commons approach to look into the different parameters of Urban, and embed it into the Right to City approach. The discussions focussed on how resources for collective use should be accessed in a regenerative manner to sustain urbanism.” (see: booklet for the course). Urban Commons in India are of another dimension than in Europe: Indian Mega-Cities are not very different from European cities in their structure. But they are completely different in seize and in their social composition. Thank you Sandeep Chachra, Pritha Chatterjee and Divitha Shandilya to give me the opportunity to learn about Urban Commons in India! India is one of the fastest growing economies of the world. But according to United Nation's Millennium Development Goals <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Development_Goals> (MDG) programme in 2011-2012 270 millions or 21.9% people out of 1.2 billion of Indians lived below poverty line of $1.25 (no new data are available). And this situation didn’t change much. Today estimated figures show about 300 million citizens living below poverty line. In big cities about 30% of the inhabitants areliving under such conditions. They are working poor: street-vendors, domestic workers, waste-pickers, construction workers, and others, women, men and children trying to secure a livelihood, living in slums or even without any shelter in the streets. The inner Indian migration process from rural to urban areas continues by different reasons (privatisation of common land, political disregard of the needs of rural populations, natural disasters, bad harvests and others). Here are some of the examples how initiatives of working poor fight for their right to the city: *Indu Prakash Singh*, working since many years against poverty and homelessness in Indian big cities reports on campaigns of the working urban poor, fighting for dignity and reclaiming themselves as *“city-makers”.* They are heroes to save the common urban spaces. City-makers fight for dignity, for shelter rights and residence permits and the campaign is now active in over 20 cities, including Delhi. (www.gcssfs.org/InduPrakash Singh) *The SWaCH wastepickers cooperatives*in the cities of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchward were successful in setting up cooperatives for door-to-door waste collection and waste processing instead of dumping. In Pimpri-Chinchward in collaboration with SNDT Women’s University SWaCH enabled 1500 women-wastepickers to become service providers for households in Pune city. This considerably improved their conditions of work and upgraded their livelihoods, effectively bridging the gap between households and the municipal waste collection service. The initiative brought together two interests – the waste pickers’ interest in upgrading their livelihood and the municipality’s interest in sustainable SWM. (www.swachcoop.com) Gayatri Nair from Tata-Institute Hyderabad reports from *The traditional fisher communities of Mumbai - the Kolis. *The example shows that commons traditions may come into conflict with other initiatives.*The Koli *came into conflict with the entryof migrant labour in fishing in the highly urbanised space of Mumbai, and the conflict between local (Koli) and migrant labour which surfaces around the question of access to common resources, in this case the seas. Gayatri is analyzing the complex interplay between the commons, the city and the community, questions about how the fish-workers should organize. Until the political consciousness of the community shifts from hostility towards migrants to questioning the path of development the fisheries is on, the dispossessed Kolis will be pitted against the dispossessed migrants. (www.Tiss.edu/Gayatri <http://www.tiss.edu/Gayatri>Nair) One of the most touching projects I ever visited is *“Shaheen” (the Falcon) *in the area of Sultan Shahi in the old city of Hyderabad: Founded by Jameela Nishat, the poet, women of “Shaheen” since 16 years are fighting against child abuse and for the empowerment of girls and women in this very poor Muslim area. Activists from “Shaheen” themselves suffered from all dimensions of abuse and violence and learned to speak out and to develop their own narratives for dignity and hope. They created their songs within the traditional “cavalli” expressing their vision. They advocate in schools to empower girls and boys - as literacy is the key to unlock the cycle of poverty. And they offer training in life skills and help young women to become leaders and help them to set up small businesses. The specific mission of “Shaheen” is to save girls from one of the most terrible abusive practices, the so-called “child-marriages” (when elderly men from the Arab peninsula come in, give some money to the families for the right to abuse very young girls for a while in a hotel – and then disappear). “Shaheen” is helping girls to negotiate with their families to end this practices. Within one year “Shaheen” women were able to stop 156 child-marriages in the area. The biggest challenge they say is to change the mindset of the people. (www.shaheencollective.org) And a final look at the wonderful campus of *Osmania-University *with it’s broad parkways and institutes: midst this environment exist *nine slums *still populated with families who’s ancestors where construction-workers in the early 20thcentury on the campus… 4 years ago people from the slums formed smaller groups of 10 members and they met every Monday, they started with empowerment strategies, and when in 2016 the big flood destroyed their homes they could organise some support. They too developed their own narrative and created “cavalli”. And they learned skills to produce some goods (b.e. soap and shampoo), they formed assemblies with democratic structures, they worked on water- and electricity-problems and a childrens’ parliament is established. As most of the women are working as domestic workers in families (7 days a week without any free time), they started a Union of domestic workers and they already got guarantees for some free time. (www.msihyd.org) By the way: very very often women fighting against misery immediately invest in the education of their daughters and sons. *(2)* *New Delhi*. At the conference on “Contemporary Capitalism and World of Work” at Jawaharlal Nehru University, organized by Actionaid India I meet with Hameda Deedat (Unionist from South-Africa), Paris Yeros (Brazil), Mamdouh Habashy (Egypt) and students from the JNU, and have the privilege to listen to the the famous Indian philosophers and intellectuals like Amiya Bagchi, Prabhat Patnaik, Utsa Patnaik and activists like Medha Paktar. The main focus is the heritage of Marx’ theory and it’s importance for today’s analysis of capitalism – focussing on globalization and financialisation as well as “platform-economy”. Many of the speakers refer to Rosa Luxemburg and her definition of continuous “primary” accumulation processes as principle of capitalism. Yes, there are massive changes in the form and dimension of capitalist exploitation – but the mode of production is still the same. The dialectic between human and nature turned into the danger of the complete destruction of the planet and the traditional industrial work disappears – but workers do not disappear and informalisation of work is still growing. The challenge is to focus on today’s composition of working classes, including working poor and rural communities and the basic role of women for change. A special session of the conference is dedicated to the commemoration of Samir Amin. (There is a wonderful video publicly launched on dec.18). Samir’s last idea is the promotion of a new “Internationale” focussed on the Global South but open to all leftist forces fighting globalised capitalism. “Social movements are not enough for change” he said. This idea can become a new base for strategic debates! At the end of the conference a new book “Reclaiming Africa” was presented, edited by Sam Moyo (who died in 2016), Praveen Jha and Paris Yeros (Springer, 2019). With all best wishes to you, and our common struggles for change, peaceful days and a happy New Year, Yours Birgit *bir.dai(a)hotmail.com <bir.dai(a)hotmail.com>* *www.birgitdaiber.eu <http://www.birgitdaiber.eu>* *Mobile: 0039-366-4207762* *Casella Postale No. 28, * *Uff.
