Community I/O - proposed for W3C Community Group
by elf Pavlik 21 Sep '11

21 Sep '11

Hello, I have just proposed a new W3C Community Group - Community I/O In short description: "Group focusing on applying current information technologies to create foundation of infrastructure for organizing flow of resources and support with services within human community. All peers (individuals or projects) can state their needs (input) and offers (output). Using Semantic Web, Federated Social Web and other related technologies people can develop various approaches of connecting those needs and offers. Including variants with and without use of currencies." I would like to invite everyone on this list interested and working with such technologies to join in. At this moment you can only find it as one of proposed groups: http://www.w3.org/community/groups/proposed/ Once 5 people express support for creating it a small infrastructure from W3C will appear with wiki, mailing lists issues tracking etc. Thanks! =) ~ elf Pavlik ~

non-aligned or re-aligned intelligentsia
by Michel Bauwens 19 Sep '11

19 Sep '11

I wrote this in a private email, but what do you think of this hunch: generally speaking, the concept of non-aligned intelligentsia could somehow apply to people like myself ... or the p2p foundation and similar groups as a new type of platform-based 'collective intellectuals' people on those platforms come from different political directions, yet somehow find a common ground in being both critical of mainstream capitalism, but also against a too collectivist tradition as perceived in the left ... (and yet we are not anarchist either ...) for example, what makes me (and others) able to have a dialogue between a postmodern anarcist, a conservative social-christian distributist, a progressive Mormon 'Zionic' social economy advocate and still many other tendencies ... what makes the indignados so effective, yet at the same time rejecting any associations with unions and labour, and what about the pirate party and anonymous ... food for thought, I think there is a new kind of alignment around some kind of shared cooperative individualism that is both distinguishable from neoliberal atomistic individualism and state-centered collectivism ... -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

barriers to the agro-ecological switch
by Michel Bauwens 05 Sep '11

05 Sep '11

Dear Eli, this is a very important article, but needs some effort in excerpting and summarizing, see http://www.counterpunch.org/2011/08/01/who-will-feed-the-people/ " That chemical-based farming is a failing experiment has been well-documented elsewhere; numerous books and articles have explored declining soil fertility, chemically-resistant weeds and pests, the tainting and depletion of irrigation water, the shrinking diversity of seeds, the dangers of genetically modified crops, and the plummeting nutritional value of fruit, vegetables, and grains. I will not reiterate these issues here, except through examples that address my points, which concern the future of agriculture. The “need” for a smaller-scale, non-chemical-based agriculture is clear. So are the attributes that it must have. This agriculture will be regionally-based, because the means for shipping produce around the world will no longer be profitable. This agriculture will be based more on animal power (two-legged and four-legged), because machines will be few, and the fuel for them too expensive or unavailable. This agriculture will focus on soil-building rather than chemicals, because the chemicals are sourced from the same raw materials that make the fuel. This agriculture will break with monocropping over hundreds of acres and instead utilize small parcels intercropped. And, this agriculture will have to involve much more than 2% of the population, even if that population is in decline." -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Dear Zoe, I have no time to do this myself, but am requesting Eli to have a look at your initiative for a collaborative clothing directory, http://openwear.org/community/openhttp://openwear.org/community/open If there have been reports about it, thanks for sending them to eli (and copy to me) By the time Eli reports, hopefully John will have registered his own initiative, and we can Eli to specifically mention this thai initiative, Hans, other clothing design coops in thailand could benefit from this exposure, if you know any? 2 strategies to undermine free software's progress

Dear friends, here is a very incisive comment by Felix Stalder, I wonder if someone could write, or point to an already written, analysis of the state of progress (or not), in view of these 2 counter-strategies? Fwd: IARPA Seeks Better Forecasting Software: Can We Provide Any?

To: global-survival(a)googlegroups.com "Are you a scientist or engineer with a creative idea that you think could provide the nation with an overwhelming intelligence advantage? Do you want the opportunity to turn your idea into a revolutionary capability? If so, consider joining IARPA as a Program Manager." -- http://www.iarpa.gov/join.html http://www.iarpa.gov/open_solicitations.html *Open Source Indicators program* *http://www.iarpa.gov/solicitations_osi.html*<http://www.iarpa.gov/solicitations_osi.html> Many significant societal events are preceded and/or followed by population-level changes in communication, consumption, and movement. Some of these changes may be indirectly observable from publicly available data, such as web search queries, blogs, micro-blogs, internet traffic, financial markets, traffic webcams, Wikipedia edits, and many others. Published research has found that some of these data sources are individually useful in the early detection of events such as disease outbreaks. But few methods have been developed for anticipating or detecting unexpected events by fusing publicly available data of multiple types from multiple sources. IARPA’s Open Source Indicators (OSI) Program aims to fill this gap by developing methods for continuous, automated analysis of publicly available data in order to anticipate and/or detect significant societal events, such as political crises, humanitarian crises, mass violence, riots, mass migrations, disease outbreaks, economic instability, resource shortages, and responses to natural disasters. Performers will be evaluated on the basis of warnings that they deliver about real-world events. Required technical innovations include: development of methods that leverage population behavior change in anticipation of, and in response to, events of interest; processing of publicly available data that reflect those population behavior changes; development of data extraction techniques that focus on volume, rather than depth, by identifying shallow features of data that correlate with events; development of multivariate time series models robust to non-stationary, noisy data to reveal patterns that precede events; and innovative use of statistical methods to fuse combinations of time series for generating probabilistic warnings of events. If successful, OSI methods will “beat the news” by fusing early indicators of events from multiple publicly available data sources and types.
