Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jorge Ferrer <jorgeferrer2012(a)gmail.com> Date: Sat, Apr 29, 2017 at 12:12 AM Subject: Participatory Spirituality New Book Event (May 11) To: Jorge Ferrer <jferrer(a)ciis.edu> Dear friends, How do we creatively participate in the mystery of spirituality? My new book *Participation and the Mystery: Transpersonal Essays in Psychology, Education, and Religion* (SUNY Press, 2017) explores participatory spirituality, which holds that human beings are active co-creators of spiritual phenomena and worlds. With the dwindling of organized religion, there is a growing movement for a more personal, individuated spirituality to come to the forefront and enrich old structures. *Participation and the Mystery* offers an examination of the relationship between science and transpersonal psychology, the import of shared entheogenic visions, the nature of a fully embodied spirituality, the features of integral education, and the future of religion I hope you are able to join me for a presentation and dialogue with *Matthew T. Segall*, who teaches in the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness program at the CIIS. *Our conversation* about *Participation and the Mystery* will *offer an* investigation of contemporary spirituality and how to participate in cycles larger than ourselves. *Event Details* Participatory Spirituality: Jorge Ferrer in Conversation with Matthew T. Open Data Movements in the Age of Big Data Capitalism Tue 16 May 2017 17:00 – 19:00 Organised by the Westminster Institute for Advanced Studies 309 Regent Street University of Westminster London W1B 2HW Registration: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/open-data-movements-in-the-age-of-big-data-c… A WIAS seminar with International Research Fellow Dr Arwid Lund and Open Knowledge Activist Dr Jonathan Gray Big data has received a lot of attention in recent years, open data/knowledge less so, and the relation between open data/knowledge and the predominantly commercial big data sector even less so. This seminar aims at critically discussing and shedding light on the under-theorised field of open data/knowledge and its relation to capitalism. In this WIAS seminar, Dr Arwid Lund reflects on his study of the ideological landscape underpinning the open data/knowledge movement (Open Knowledge London). Dr Jonathan Gray focuses on his own involvement in this movement and his forthcoming book Data Worlds: The new politics of information. The aim of the seminar is to introduce critical perspectives on open data/knowledge’s relation to capitalism, as well as a critical understanding of the political character that informs its advocates. We will round the event off with a wine reception. Dr Arwid Lund is a Lecturer at the Department of Arts and Cultural Sciences, Lund University, Sweden. Arwid is completing the second part of his WIAS fellowship from 3 April 2017 to 2 June 2017. During his fellowship, he will be working on how ‘openness’ is understood ideologically by advocates within the Open Knowledge Network. His aim is to identify the ideological landscape within this movement. Dr Jonathan Gray is a Prize Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research, University of Bath. He is also Research Associate at the médialab of Sciences Po and Tow Fellow at the Tow Center for Digital Journalism, Columbia University. As Director of Policy and Research at the global civil society organisation Open Knowledge, Jonathan has founded and co-founded numerous initiatives, including the Data Journalism Handbook, Europe’s Energy, Open Data for Tax Justice, OpenSpending, Open Trials, The Public Domain Review and Where Does My Money Go?.

AUGUSTINE, FL., USA, April 24, 2017 Today, the latest Green Transition Scoreboard® (GTS) found that, despite Trump’s anti-green policies, private green investments now total more than $8.1 trillion USD ($8,133,456,730,370). Published annually since 2009, the GTS is a global measure of private green investment in five green sectors: 1) Renewable Energy, 2) Efficiency, 3) Life Systems (water, waste, recycling, community investing, e-learning and fintech), 4) Green Construction, and 5) Green Corporate R&D. Government investments have been omitted wherever possible and technological criteria are strictly applied. *Sector* *Amount US $* Renewable Energy $3,427,534,992,202 Energy Efficiency $1,748,904,490,919 Life Systems $1,660,880,346,366 Green Construction $914,736,379,757 Corporate Green R&D $381,400,521,125 *Grand Total* *$8,133,456,730,370 * The aggregated total is tracked by Ethical Markets Media Certified B Corporation’s team of experts and global advisory board, led by CEO Dr. Hazel Henderson, futurist/author and former US government science policy advisor. Henderson said “The green economy is growing faster than anyone realizes. We knew that this good news on the progress of the global green transition couldn’t be fully covered by mainstream financial media and news programs whose advertising is still from fossilized sectors.” GTS co-author Tim Nash, The Sustainable Economist, adds “Although the USA is expected to fall behind due to federal policies that put obsolete industries like coal ahead of thriving green sectors, large corporations are stepping up to invest billions in more efficient technologies.” The full 2017 GTS report titled “Deepening Green Finance” can be downloaded free here: 2017 Green Transition Scoreboard Full Report <http://email.robly.com/wf/click?upn=AlNihRI6Y5L0eZZpi-2BfAu0h6OWKMqnRhD6UT6…> Cities and states worldwide are now leading, energized by former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and many others. The UNEP Inquiry on Design of a Sustainable Financial System is successfully engaging conventional financial markets. Co-director Dr. Simon Zadek welcomed the release of the GTS report, “With a changed political landscape, the case for green finance has to be strengthened, so your work is very important and has to be widely used”. The GTS report traces private money shifting from incumbent fossilized sectors to emerging green opportunities. Financial firms are being forced to innovate as pressure grows from all side. Activist ethical investors and divestment campaigns are getting louder. New pressure from above is driven by the National Development Commitments (NDCs) signed by 194 governments under the UN COP 21 and 22 climate accords and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Pressure is also coming from below with the rise of Silicon Valley’s Fintech100, including crowdfunding, peer-to-peer lending, and reward currencies like SolarCoin. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ilias Marmaras <mbholgr(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Apr 26, 2017 at 8:23 PM Subject: Europeana - goteo matchfunding campaign on 1821 platform Hello all (I am writing in english for Michel) So, Personal Cinema & Collaborators have been selected by Europeana for a matchfunding campaign regarding a proposal that we submitted. The proposal refers to the creation of an online educational platform in respect to Europeana's collections of material based on the Greek war of independence 1821. It is part of a vaster project that we are designing as a videogame, which will deal with the war of independence and the issues of the revival of nationalism. The game will be the upcoming genre called Historical Games. The platform -and the game will be licensed as CC and same will go with the game . We intend to create an online library that will include all game elements for free reuse and especially to map in 3D simulations the mediterranean and Balkan nature and built environment. (Enough with the nordic Tolkien simulations of nature and history) . Here is the url of the campaign at goteo : https://en.goteo.org/ project/1821-greek-revolution-history-platform Please spread it. All 255 of you. I’ll get to the point. The hi:project team is collaborating with others interested in trustworthy and empowering technologies. We’re working to launch the Digital Life Collective and we'd love you to be part of it. Now for anyone interested in the trials and tribulations of an ambitious, open-source, nonprofit vision such as the hi:project, I provide a fuller debrief below. For those who prefer their updates bitesize, everything you need is contained in the next six paragraphs. ... You’ll recall the hi:project has some mighty challenges in its sights. We will help: solve personal data & privacy; secure a citizen-centric Internet of Things; transform accessibility & digital inclusion. Just as for many free open source software projects, no-one profits *with* the hi:project but rather everyone *because* of it. And therein lies both the broad opportunity and the deep problem. If everyone secures the return on investment, if the profit cannot be privatised, who exactly is going to make the investment? In other words, markets aren’t designed to address such particular potential, but that hasn’t stopped us appealing to commercial players – more on how that works below. Moreover, it doesn’t seem foundations can fund and foster such fundamental architecture. And our brush with academic funding was a brush off. In all, we’ve been working across four fronts, failing at these three, and seeing if we can succeed at the fourth. At first the fourth appears counter-intuitive ... if the hi:project seemed too big, fifty of us have banded together so far to go bigger. The Digital Life Collective is a co-operative dedicated to “tech we trust for the world we want”, and today is the day we go all official. Today we put the incorporation paperwork in the post and invite you to become a co-founding member so that together we can give the market a miss for the moment, pause the powwow with foundations, give up grinding the grant applications … and start simply co-operating. Technology of, by and for the people. *Our tech, not their tech*. Find out more now at www.diglife.com <http://hi-project.org/mailster/1182/5cb11474d828b5295be5c9bd38f61526/aHR0cD…> . As for engineering the hi:project … well we’ll be making our case to the Collective in due time. ### THE DEBRIEF >From the moment we started talking about the hi:project, we contrasted the user interface (UI) and the human interface (HI), the former describing the status quo in which you, the mere *user*, are actually the *used*, where you are in fact the product being sold, the civilian being controlled <http://hi-project.org/mailster/1182/5cb11474d828b5295be5c9bd38f61526/aHR0cD…>. By adopting HI as our terminology, we communicate the intent to reinstate your sovereignty, your dignity, your humanity. In the ensuing four years we’ve witnessed a new type of UI emerge that feels sufficiently transformed as to warrant its own acronym. Some call them conversational interfaces, or intelligent personal assistants, or chatbots, which sounds ever so friendly. I prefer to name them after their primary function however … the surveillance interface <http://hi-project.org/mailster/1182/5cb11474d828b5295be5c9bd38f61526/aHR0cD…> (SI). Google Assistant. Amazon Alexa. Apple Siri. Microsoft Cortana. And Facebook appears intent on developing similar capabilities. The only thing more alarming than SI’s intrusive, opaque, and society-altering capabilities is the way in which tech pundits have ladled out the accolades, pundits whose worldview appears as limited as a magpie’s regard for shiny things. Very very few companies are positioned to offer SI because it requires a huge amount of context (the surveillance ideally pre-dates the SI), enormous computing power, and therefore an existing dominant position in the consumer electronics and web services marketplace. Consequently, our global digital infrastructure is further centralized – saying that half a dozen companies are left in the race is likely an overestimate. And yet it’s tricky to convey the criticality of decentralization. In the here and now it seems irrelevant compared to the facility to utter “Alexa, play Sheeran’s Shape of You”. We were invited to write an article on the topic by the World Wide Web Foundation, and we hope the title alone does it justice: Decentralization – a deep cause of causes you care about deeply <http://hi-project.org/mailster/1182/5cb11474d828b5295be5c9bd38f61526/aHR0cD…> . We need to redecentralize the interface layer in ‘the stack’. We need to re-center things on you so you can chose to work *with* companies to create shared value rather than have them work *on* you. And we need to make sure everyone is invited. Now I’ve touched on some of the context, here’s a brief look at the challenge we face trying to fund such an enterprise. 1. FOUNDATIONS. We haven’t spoken to every foundation with an Internet or Web related programme I’m sure. Nevertheless, the story I related in my last update (Feb 2016) hasn’t progressed any. We’re consistently aligned with these programmes, but our scope is waaaay too ambitious. As someone with more experience of foundations describes it ... if you’re transforming the relationship between civilians and their police service, then here’s some funding, but seek to reconfigure our relationships with all variety of public, private and governmental organizations and you’re clearly smoking something. (For the record, she was merely employing metaphor.) 2. ACADEMIC RESEARCH. On the back of the hi:project, I find myself pursuing a PhD on the issues. This is wonderful. Less so my experience of a multi-university application for European funding. We failed. And personally speaking, it’s not something I have any intention of ever doing ever again ever. 3. OLD-FASHIONED SELF-INTEREST. In *Virtual Competition: The Promise and Perils of the Algorithm-Driven Economy <http://hi-project.org/mailster/1182/5cb11474d828b5295be5c9bd38f61526/aHR0cD…>* (Nov 2016), the authors question whether the invisible hand of the market still holds sway over some of those very privileged companies I listed above. I spent a good part of 2015 and 2016 talking to tier 2 tech firms (i.e. massive firms who didn’t make this tier 1 algorithmic hegemony) about staying tier 2 forever and paying the tier 1 tollgates forever. Would they not rather invest together in re-levelling the playing field to everyone's benefit including their own? I’m delighted we secured the interest of a well-known organization that hosts collaborative development of open, non-differentiating tech, but no breakthrough yet on securing collaborative investment from their members or beyond. Still working on it. As it becomes increasingly obvious to the leadership and technologists across many sectors – automotive, financial services, home automation, healthcare, sports, entertainment, etc. – that they’ve been mediated out of contending for a direct relationship with any customer or indeed any stakeholder, this must change. And so to our fourth way forward ... 4. CO-OPERATION. I recently learned two things about Franklin D. Roosevelt. He’s considered one of the top three US presidents (ref <http://hi-project.org/mailster/1182/5cb11474d828b5295be5c9bd38f61526/aHR0cH…>), and in a 1912 speech at the People’s Forum in New York he proclaimed: “Competition has been shown to be useful up to a certain point and no further, but cooperation, which is the thing we must strive for today, begins where competition leaves off.” Competition has ‘left off’ and we’re left with growing, numbing centralization. We’re resigned to deepening, meticulous surveillance. We’re abdicating to the pervasive, unknowable influence of opaque algorithms. Where once others constructed digital profiles of us, we are now the mere biological shadows of these digital entities. Hang on a minute, you say. Did he mention something earlier about smoking something?!... well allow me to ground this last observation. When your home and car insurance premiums are determined, who exactly do you think the insurer is quantifying? The remote, inaccessible, biological you, or one or more of those digital fabrications? The latter of course, and irrespective of the corresponding omissions or accuracy. Now combine your lack of control over the digital entities that are taken to *be* you with your lack of control over your interface into and onto this digital world, and your situation doesn’t look too bright. *Our* situation doesn’t look too bright. It’s plain to me that we can’t wait for tier 2 business leaders to wake up. If they only view things through the lens of direct competition, the best they can achieve is number 1 of tier 2. No. We must co-operate amongst ourselves to address this mess, and they can come and co-operate with us once we’ve got things rolling. The co-operative way dates back to the 18th Century, and the Rochdale principles set out the operational ideals for co-operatives in 1844. Working co-operatively is perfectly suited to our challenge here, and in an interesting synergy identified and championed by Platform Cooperativism <http://hi-project.org/mailster/1182/5cb11474d828b5295be5c9bd38f61526/aHR0cD…>, our work will actually enhance the vibrancy of the co-operative way in the digital age. If we don’t co-operate to help ourselves, no-one will. You’re invited to become a co-founder right now. You can find out more at www.diglife.com <http://hi-project.org/mailster/1182/5cb11474d828b5295be5c9bd38f61526/aHR0cD…> . Best wishes, Philip @Sheldrake. During the December conference <http://commonstransition.org/developing-a-coop-commons-alliance-for-a-colla…> and in the months since, the issue of "What is Open Cooperativism and how does it compare to Platform Cooperativism" has been brought up numerous times. Bruno Roleants in particular raised some very pertinent questions which we've been eager to follow up on. We thought hard about it and Ann Marie and I have written this in-depth analysis of both approaches and why they matter. One of the purposes was to explain Open Coops in an understandable language and, also, to offset it against Platform Coops while explaining how they can work together. Here is the article: *From Platform to Open Cooperativism* <http://commonstransition.org/from-platform-to-open-cooperativism/> <http://commonstransition.org/from-platform-to-open-cooperativism/> This is an extract: “Rather than assuming a digital backbone, Open Cooperativism explores how open data, ecological stewardship, and the active production of Commons might expand and revive established cooperative traditions, even reclaim the idea of a Cooperative Commonwealth. Open Cooperativism argues that it’s not enough to have a better Uber or a more democratic AirBnB: we must tackle issues like housing and transportation head on. The root causes of our dysfunctional, destructive economies can’t be danced around.” Please read and share! -- Strategic direction steward P2P Foundation <http://p2pfoundation.net/>.
