To: Kate Raworth <kate.raworth(a)ouce.ox.ac.uk> Dear friends and colleagues, After three years of thinking and rewriting, *Doughnut Economics: seven ways to think like a 21st century economist* is now officially published, and I'm delighted. My huge thanks to all those who have encouraged and supported me along the way. Doughnut Economics proposes 7 fundamental shifts needed in today's economic mindset if we – humanity – want to give ourselves half a chance of thriving together on this living planet in the 21st century. It's had some strong reviews, including this article by George Monbiot <https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/apr/12/doughnut-growth-econo…> . Doughnut Economics is now available in English in bookshops worldwide, and in Italian, with future editions coming in Spanish, German, Portuguese, Dutch and Japanese. If you'd like to help the book's message fly in the world, it would be wonderful if you could do any of the following: - Tweet / Facebook / share the book on any social media platforms you use. You could tweet / share George Monbiot's article <https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/apr/12/doughnut-growth-econo…>, or here's a sample tweet/post to share, along with one of the images attached below. *It's time to rewrite economics! Only two candidates can take part in the second round in May. But who will those two be? Extreme right-wing Front National candidate Marine Le Pen has been the front runner in the polls over the last year, but her support has been slipping. Ex-socialist minister and centrist darling of the bourgeois media, Emmanuel Macron is neck and neck with Le Pen, both at around 22-23%. The official conservative (Republican) candidate Francois Fillon should be ahead, but he has been damaged by the expenses scandal of his wife and children getting huge government-funded salaries for parliamentary work which they did not do. Even so, Fillon is getting about 18-19% share of those saying they will vote. The big surprise in the last few weeks had been the rise of Leftist candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon, whose polling has leapt from 10-11% to around 19% now. In so doing, the official Socialist party candidate, Benoit Hamon, has seen his vote slump to 6-7%. <https://thenextrecession.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/polls.png> It is still most likely that it will be Le Pen and Macron in the second round, with Macron more than likely to win the presidency by some distance over Le Pen. But all combinations are possible, with the worst for French capital being a battle between leftist Eurosceptic, anti-NATO Melenchon and racist Eurosceptic Le Pen. Back in February I analysed the state of the French economy <https://thenextrecession.wordpress.com/2017/02/01/france-penned-in/>, the second-largest in mainland Europe and one of top ten capitalist economies globally. The profitability of French capital is at a post-war low (profitability is still down a staggering 22% since the peak just before the global financial crash in 2007), real GDP growth is only just over 1% a year, well below that of Germany. The unemployment rate remains stuck close to 10% compared to just 3.9% in Germany. Youth unemployment is 24%. Business investment has stagnated in the ‘recovery’ since 2009. Because of the actions of the French labour movement, inequalities of income and wealth have not risen as much as in other G7 countries like the US and the UK in the last 30 years. [image: zucman] Neoliberal policies have been less effective in getting profitability up and workers down under the thumb of capital. French capital needs a president that can and will do this now. Can it find one? If we look at the programs of each candidate, we can see it is Francois Fillon who offers the best programme for the interests of French capital. Fillon aims to end the key gain of the French labour movement, the official 35-week, often firmly enforced. Under Fillon, workers would have to put in 39 hours before overtime or time-off in lieu is paid. Fillon would slash the public sector workforce by 500,000 (or 10%), while increasing the working week for those who keep their jobs. The retirement age would be raised to 65 from 62 now and everybody would have to work to that age or face pension loss. Unemployment benefits would be cut. Severe fiscal austerity would be imposed with a cut in public sector spending from the (astronomically high for capitalism) 57% of GDP to 50%, with a ‘balanced budget’. The cuts would be necessary because Fillon wants to cut corporate tax rates to 25% and other ‘burdens’ on the business sector, while raising VAT for purchases by French households by 2% pts. He would scrap the current wealth tax on the rich. One area of extra spending would be more police and more prisons, while reducing gay rights. This is an outright neo-liberal program that no French president has been able to impose successfully in the last 30 years. But French capital demands it. Unfortunately, for big business, Fillon is unlikely to make the presidency. But what of Macron, the ex-banker and socialist minister, the man most likely to get into the Elysee Palace (the French White House)? Macron’s program is a mix that attempts to appeal to labour and capital, as though they could be reconciled. He wants to merge public and private pension and benefit schemes. He claims that he will get the unemployment rate down to 7% through an investment plan. And yet he plans to cut public sector spending and run a tight budget. Like Fillon, he would cut corporate tax for businesses to 25% of declared profits. He keeps the 35-hour week, but companies would be allowed to ‘negotiate’ a longer week. Low-wage earners would be exempted from certain social welfare levies, a measure that would put an extra month's wage per year in the employee's pocket (but no clarity on how this would be paid for, except through ‘higher growth’). He too would boost police and prisons but also provide a ‘payment for culture’ to students and reduce school class sizes. He would cut the number of MPs and reduce time for re-election of officials, while banning Fillon-type payments to family members. This programme is thus a mix of help to business and wishful thinking for labour. But it seems to appeal to just enough voters over the neoliberal alternative of Fillon. Both Fillon and Macron are pro-EU and pro-euro. This is the one big policy difference with Le Pen and Melenchon. Le Pen’s program is a mixture of racist, anti-immigrant, anti-EU policies alongside pro-labour measures for the public sector and wages. Le Pen would ‘re-negotiate’ the EU treaty with the rest of the EU and if that failed, call a referendum on leaving the EU within six months. If French voters decided to stay in the EU, she would resign the presidency. If they voted to leave, France would end the euro as its currency and re-introduce the franc. Such a policy would be shattering for the French economy and probably sound the death-knell of the EU and the euro as we know it. Le Pen would get on with ending immigration, strip many French muslims of citizenship, revoke international trade treaties and NATO operations and confine free education to French citizens only. Companies employing foreigners would pay an extra 10% tax and foreign imports would be subject to a 3% tax. And, of course, the police forces would be expanded. Like the Brexiters in the UK referendum, she claims that she can cut taxes on average households and raise welfare benefits by saving money on EU membership and regulations (that has turned out to be a myth in the UK, where austerity has increased). The number of MPS would be halved. But Le Pen also aims to help (small) business with lower taxes. And instead of raising the retirement age, as Fillon proposes, she would cut it to 60 years, increase benefits to the old and to children, while keeping the working week at 35 hours and overtime tax-free! Le Pen’s economic policy is thus anathema to French capital and attractive to French labour, but combined with racist and nationalist measures. But, of course, there is no real attack on the hegemony of French big business. So this policy of raising wages and benefits while leaving the euro and introducing protectionism, in an economic world of low growth and a possible new economic slump, is utopian. Neither the needs of labour nor capital will be met. When we turn to Melenchon, we see a similar utopianism, if from the perspective of defending the interests of labour over capital. His economic program is similar to that of Corbyn’s Labour <https://thenextrecession.wordpress.com/2015/09/11/corbynomics-extreme-or-mo…>in the UK, if going further. He proposes a 100-billion-euro economic stimulus plan funded by government borrowing and some nationalisation in sectors such as the motorway network. He says he would raise public spending by 275 billion euros to fund the plan, to raise minimum and public sector wages, create jobs to reduce the unemployment rate to 6% and also, like Le Pen, cut the retirement age to 60. This extra spending would, Keynesian-like, fund itself from higher economic growth and employment. But with big business needing profits to invest, calling for more taxes on business (as well as the rich), may deliver the opposite of faster growth. At the same time, he too would cut corporate tax rates to 25%! Melenchon would also renegotiate the EU treaties, ignore the EU fiscal austerity pact, call for a devaluation of the euro, take national control of the Banque de France from the ECB and leave NATO and the IMF. And following Le Pen, if these measures are blocked, he would have a referendum on EU membership. Melenchon’s program is similar to that of socialist Francois Mitterand (although somewhat less radical than Mitterand’s) when the latter won the presidency in 1981. He too wanted to take France on an independent line from the rest of Europe in expanding the economy through public spending, nationalisation and more taxes on business and the rich. That program fell down in face of the deep global slump in 1980-2, when financial investors fled France and the franc. The choice then was for Mitterand to go the whole hog and take control from French capital or capitulate to neoliberal policies. He chose the latter with his so-called "tournant de la rigueur" (austerity turn) in 1983. That choice would soon face Melenchon, in the unlikely event that he won the presidency. Apart from the economic utopianism of Le Pen and Melenchon under capitalism, they both face an immediate political problem. In June, the French vote for a new National Assembly, which, at least right now, would probably elect a majority of conservative pro-capital, pro-EU MPs who would be backed by a media campaign from big business, the EU Commission and other EU governments aiming to shackle the new president. The battle would be on from day one, while the euro and French financial assets reel from the shock. But it probably won’t happen. *michael roberts <https://thenextrecession.wordpress.com/author/bobmckee/>* | April 16, 2017 at 6:37 am | Categories: capitalism <https://thenextrecession.wordpress.com/category/capitalism/>, economics <https://thenextrecession.wordpress.com/category/economics/>, Profitability <https://thenextrecession.wordpress.com/category/profitability/> | URL: http://wp.me/pLequ-3BM Comment <https://thenextrecession.wordpress.com/2017/04/16/france-the-choice/#respond> See all comments <https://thenextrecession.wordpress.com/2017/04/16/france-the-choice/#commen…> Like <https://thenextrecession.wordpress.com/2017/04/16/france-the-choice/?like_a…> Unsubscribe <https://subscribe.wordpress.com/?key=531fe0a53ac490f2a6621dd4883aea3b&email…> to no longer receive posts from Michael Roberts Blog. Fwd: Wikipedia for psychotherapeutic and awareness-based methods

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Patricia Morgan <p.morgan(a)unsw.edu.au> Date: Mon, Apr 3, 2017 at 2:55 PM Subject: RE: Wikipedia for psychotherapeutic and awareness-based methods To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com>, Annelies De Zaeytijd < anneliesdezaeytijd(a)hotmail.com>, Denis Postle <denis(a)postle.net>, Nadia McLaren <nadia.mclaren(a)gmail.com>, Ann Noppen <ann.noppen(a)consense.be>, Kris ROOSE <kroose(a)gmail.com> Cc: annelies ahasverus <annelies.dezaeytijd(a)ahasverus.be>, "AELA New Economy (neweconomy(a)earthlaws.org.au)" <neweconomy(a)earthlaws.org.au> Hi Everyone, We were in touch last year about emerging aspects of the Commons – psychotherapeutic, subjective/pre-conceptual, spiritual. I’m sorry it was difficult to connect and speak about this together but there may be a platform for that in an upcoming conference, which is a conference that will we be running in Brisbane, Australia in September of this year: https://neweconomy.org.au/2017-conference/ I have proposed a working group for this conference and I was wondering if there was a way that those of you who are interested might be a part of this working group to create something for the conference? The following is what I wrote as an introduction to the working group: *Subjective Experience in the New Economy* *"I'm keen to work with a group of people interested in the subjective (pre-conceptual) aspects of our experience – and the ways in which addressing these ‘deeper’ parts of ourselves can result in positive change, individually and collectively. After researching the effects of contemplative practices, such as meditation, in education, I believe contemplative subjective consciousness is a foundational aspect of learning and change. However, because of the accelerating pace of life enhanced by constant connectivity through ICT, and the resulting fragmented attention, we are often disconnected from this grounding aspect of who we are. Why is this important for the New Economy? I think deep change, a central aim of the New Economy, can only happen if we have deep (pre-conceptual) engagement with the fundaments of that change. * *It appears that interest in the subjective, somatic, affective, psychological and spiritual aspects of the New Economy is growing with the development of projects such as the Psych-commons, and attempts to remediate the stress that activists suffer, Arts-practice, such as Earth Arts, Contemplative, Environmental and Slow Art, and Participatory Spirituality. Though it seems that an awareness of, and engagement with reflective or contemplative subjective consciousness is not yet a significant part of the New Economy. I’d like to develop a working group with others interested in these issues, to discuss how we can contribute to the conference in September and in ongoing work with the network."* *I hope this note finds you well and looking forward to hearing from you.* *Kind Regards, Patricia* *From:* Michel Bauwens [mailto:[email protected]] *Sent:* Sunday, 13 November 2016 5:58 AM *To:* Annelies De Zaeytijd <anneliesdezaeytijd(a)hotmail.com>; Denis Postle < denis(a)postle.net>; Nadia McLaren <nadia.mclaren(a)gmail.com>; Ann Noppen < ann.noppen(a)consense.be>; Kris ROOSE <kroose(a)gmail.com>; Patricia Morgan < p.morgan(a)unsw.edu.au> *Cc:* annelies ahasverus <annelies.dezaeytijd(a)ahasverus.be> *Subject:* Re: Wikipedia for psychotherapeutic and awareness-based methods Dear Annelies, Thanks for presenting your ideas and plans, I can't guarantee they will be interested, but I have copied some people who may have an interest; Nadia produced a huge encyclopedia of human potential techniques some years back, Denis works around the psy-commons and Ann around the body and the mind, while Kris Roose has long been a integral psychologist; Patricia Morgan works around mindfullness and learning in Sydney ; and maybe they might offer some extra perspectives; Michel On Fri, Nov 11, 2016 at 8:20 PM, Annelies De Zaeytijd < anneliesdezaeytijd(a)hotmail.com> wrote: Hello Michel, As promised, I send you an email with the idea you gave me and got stuck in my head. I am looking for fellows who want to co-create in existing or new prototypes of this bigger idea or who want to support in co-creating the bigger picture or who are already working on this bigger picture so I can join in. (See below: how can you join us or how can we join you?) *Who am I?* I am a psychologist, psychotherapist and mindfulness trainer in Belgium. I work in a Center for mental health care in Belgium, subsidized by the governement. I also have my own psychotherapeutic practice at home and online through skype and work as a freelance mindfulness trainer and coach for the Institute of Attention and Mindfulness. *The bigger picture:* The idea or dream is to develop a kind of wikipedia, containing methods with which people can work with their own mud or cultivate their own humanity in a positive way. Any kind of method from psychology is included as well as awareness-based methods like mindfulness, compassion training, ... rooted in the contemplative traditions. Since it would be a wikipedia kind of thing, this platform is inclusive to all kinds of streams in psychology like also psycho-analytic as well as cognitive sciences, you name it. In this bigger idea we would like to create a platform where people can find their own way (for free) and use the available methods we put online. But they can also ask for help through online skype calls (which would then be paying). We would like to combine this online learning with life group processes like holding spaces for allowing people to get together in an online group globally, or locally in a real get-to-gether group. Or we would also like to add tools like talkabout where people can pair up in learning buddies, for example to do emotion focusing exercises together. *How is this emerging future already trying to be born?* There is a worldwide movement going on in making these methods available online for free through apps (like insight timer), or online courses by very well experienced teachers (like Tara Brach on Udemy) or organisations like Shambhala (doing the online free science meditation summit). Also some Western methods are going global with professor and therapist Mia Leijssens MOOC from Leuven University on the Edx. 28,000 seeking people from over 150 countries have enrolled in this course! *Prototypes of this bigger idea are emerging:* I am now working on a prototype of this bigger idea or dream. I called my prototype: *Hybrid* growing environments for transforming your own personal mud into blooming lotus-flowers* It is just in its beginning shoes. I used the Ulab (leading from the emerging future) course as a way to launch my prototype. It is now also published in *the presencing institute* so that people can join in my prototype and help me develop. You need to subscribe and make an account to follow the link: https://uschool.presencing.com/prototype/ulab-2016/ hybrid-growing-environments-transforming-your-own- personal-mud-blooming-lotus This website holds spaces for people who want to co-create or group together in a collective intelligence to dialogue about certain topics. In this way I have already met with Ruth a psychologist from Germany who is also developing the same kind of prototype, focusing on positive psychology. Her prototype is called : *Learning Network "Zufrieden Leben: * https://uschool.presencing.com/prototype/ulab-2016/ learning-network-zufrieden-leben My prototype contains the following guided exercises which I am now recording: - mindfulness training - compassion training - emotion focusing - inner dialogue We are still looking for ways we can put this on an online platform. One of our ideas is through teachable or Udemy. But we are not sure yet, because these are online courses. While we want to create a learning environment. *We want to organize in a network of people who co-create* We would like to expand our network and join forces with people who want to do a similar thing. Ruth (from Germany) and I are going to get together (online through skype for 1,15 hour) once a month in order to talk about the evolution of our prototypes and support each other. Basically we are looking for ways a global online platform can be realized. So we are looking for people: - who can co-create with us - who can prototype with us - who have the knowledge or means to start an online learning environment that can go global - who have the intention of making methods available in a democratic way, accessible to anyone who has acces to the internet. - who also play with these ideas but are looking for ground (a social field) to stand on - who want to manage this kind of an emerging network - who can help co-create in this bigger idea - ... *How can you join us or how can we join you?* Maybe you already started an initiative I can join in? You can send me an email. We can meet up in a skype call to explore each others interests? We can get together with the people who are prototyping once a month to check in on each others progress and support each other. We could start a bigger online network of people who want to support this bigger idea (like hosting a HUB on a global scale in the presencing institute, which is holding spaces for global networks). *Questions we want to adress:* *How can we co-create this and make it available to people* - in a democratic way - in a facilitating way in which people feel supported to walk their own paths - both online or life in real time - in groups or retreat situations or holidays where people can bathe in a supportive group atmosphere in a calm and natural environment and work with their muds, in order to let their lotus flowers (ie their humanity) bloom and grow. - like a web of decentralized and interconnected learning environments where people can find their ways by themselves (like wikipedia) *Why/how online?* - in a way people can train, work on this in their homes or wherever they feel safe: by providing online guided meditations (preferably for free!) and journaling exercises as well as self-assessment tools by which they can evaluate their own progress - giving people acces to existing platforms, moocs, practicing communities, like the kindness challenge, where they can co-train or find learning buddies and inspire each other http://kindspring. servicespace.org/challenge/?gclid=CJ7ysZPS8M8CFQoTGwod... <http://kindspring.servicespace.org/challenge/?gclid=CJ7ysZPS8M8CFQoTGwodS9k…> *What does hybrid* mean?* - giving people acces to adresses of therapists who can assist or coach them in this face to face or through skype - Holding online spaces for the creation of supporting groups similar like hubs, where people can practice and exchange together - Holding online spaces for the creation of online circles where people can do the same thing - Holding online spaces for the creation of buddying-up online (or where people can find other people geographically close to their own homes) where people can find focusing partners and learn shoulder-on-shoulder *Questions about the problems of the idea:* - This is how I see a future possibility to emerge, but I cannot do this alone: I am especially looking for other people who can take this idea and do something with it on a bigger scale :-) - We need also help from therapists who have experience with valuable methods and they want to democratically share with more people, rather than the rather costly one on one sessions. - How can we put these exercises in an online environment? Like wikipedia, this online environment must be very userfriendly for therapists (who often suck at IT-knowledge) to put something online. - How can we create a feedbackloop so that these methods put online can be peer-reviewed by other therapists or experts and users in a trustworthy way. - Some therapists think the most effective way is to work in one on one situation with another person or therapist. - Please feel free to help me explore this by giving suggestions Hoping to hear from you, Sincerely yours, Annelies *The only reality we have, is happening here and now -this is it. If we miss it because we are caught up in our daydreams, memories, hopes and fears, then our whole life is lived as though we are asleep. Fwd: Crazy Time; Stay Sane
by Michel Bauwens 13 Apr '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <douglas(a)rushkoff.com> Date: Fri, Apr 14, 2017 at 2:49 AM Subject: Crazy Time; Stay Sane To: rushkoff(a)simplelists.com Lots of craziness out there. I used to use TV as an escape from the various forms of disregulation I experience in real life. The smooth stream of brain-numbing content settled me. Now, simply picking up the remote control moistens my palm with anticipatory anxiety. Will Trump drop a bomb? Will someone get beaten up in an airplane aisle? And why do those stories even feel equivalent? My monologue on last weeks’ TeamHuman show <http://teamhuman.fm/episodes/ep-31-r-u-sirius/> anticipated events of the past few days. I asked what Donald Trump might do if he were truly backed into a corner. This week, we may be seeing that. Or maybe we’re seeing something else. Nobody’s facts line up with anybody else’s - and none stay the same for more than a few hours at a time. In this week’s monologue <http://teamhuman.fm/episodes/ep-32-laszlo-karafiath-phd-meme-wars/> (after I run through a few possible Trump-Russia-Syria alternative theories) I try to explain how I have gotten to the place where I no longer know what to believe. But I’m learning to be okay with that. True or not, both these stories and these actions serve as distractions from the work at hand. I’m not telling you to ignore the news, but I am saying we can’t use the news as an excuse to ignore one another. Have a listen. Meanwhile, for my text-based friends, here are a couple of favorites from the past week or so. If you want the most human stuff, though, consider the audio above. 1. *Here’s an interview with a great new UK-based magazine called Stir to Action:* OSB: You’ve mentioned that “the model of the ever expanding economy is bankrupt” and highlighted the “corporate charters” and “central currency” as the core components of the present “bankrupt” system. How can we hope to challenge the corporate charters? DR: Well, you sound like you believe the way to change corporate structure is for citizens to take action against the corporations. That’s certainly one possible approach, and useful in a situation where there are no human beings within the corporation who are willing or able to change the corporations from the inside. What might be surprising to you is that most of the people in corporations actually do not want to kill people, do not want to be enslaving children in resource-rich nations, and do not want to make the planet uninhabitable. They are the ones in the best position to change corporate actions, since they are inside the companies themselves. They simply need to be educated about what is possible. I tried to do some of that in my book. CEOs and Boards of Directors need to understand that they do have legal authority to act in the best long term interests of the company. So-called “activist” shareholders really cannot sue Boards for hurting the short-term value of shares – especially when the Boards are acting in the long-term interests of the shareholders. Not destroying the planet is in the best long-term interests of shareholders. Likewise, companies can restructure and reorient from within to favor dividends and public reinvestment over capital gains and extraction. So, as I argue in my book, the key is to convince CEOs and others who are running corporations that they can exercise human agency in their decisions. They do not have to behave automatically. They can use their decision-making authority. They need to communicate with shareholders, and explain the advantages of getting lots of dividends instead of a one-time “pop” of share price, followed by an inevitable decline. Companies can actually make more money with ongoing revenues than blindly pursuing growth. They can stop selling off their most productive assets, and instead remain powerfully competent companies. Steady state economics is about maximizing circulation rather than extraction. To anyone who understands how business works, they should see how this is a healthier choice for those within the business, as well as the distant shareholders who only want money at any cost. OSB: You have described how “digital giants are running charter monopoly software…” and that their “technology enforces the monopoly”. At Open we are keen to see NGOs, co-ops, non-profits and even Local Authorities start to utilise open source software and, in return, to fund the development of a suite of open source apps which facilitate collective ownership and collaboration. What steps do you think are required to disrupt the digital giants’ monopolies? DR: Of course, I was using the word “software” a bit metaphorically. The corporate charter is itself a program that can be changed. Instead, it is being further amplified by technology. What I mean by that is that the corporation works in a particular way, as dictated by the charters and contracts making up their business plan. So a company’s core code – long forgotten – may assume that the way to make money is to prevent people in the regions where the company operates from making any money. And while that may have been a good strategy for maintaining a slave state in the 1400’s, it doesn’t work so well in places where people are supposed to be free or employed. But the company’s directors may have forgotten all of this by the 21st century, and simply implemented new plans based on the same strategy of exploitation and extraction. So now they are writing software and building platforms that embed these same assumptions about their users. And they end up extracting value and time from people without helping them create or retain any for themselves. Or a business plan might be to make money by extracting metal ore from the ground. Then, the company builds technology to do that, which makes the extraction happen a lot faster. They don’t realize that extracting so quickly and totally may deplete things in new ways. And because they don’t realize that the core “code” of the company is actually changeable, they don’t see any way out of the problem. Now, you’re talking about software solutions themselves, and how people from the outside can give up entirely on the corporate solutions, and build alternative software that works in greater consonance with the needs of real people and places. That’s pretty easy to do. We can write an alternative Uber that lets the drivers participate in the profits. Or an alternative Facebook that doesn’t manipulate people’s news feeds to try to program people’s future choices. The trick is getting people to use the alternatives when they’re not so pretty or universally accepted. OSB: It has been suggested that the open-source / platform co-op alternatives to corporate software solutions will need to do two things at least: – Be easier to use / provide a better experience – Cost the user the same or less (i.e. provide better value for (conventional) money. What do you think about the possibility of an “open app ecosystem” (a library of interoperable apps, covering all aspects of communication, organisation and even trading needs) sweeping into dominance over the corporate alternatives once it provides the same level of utility, at the same price, as the present corporate systems? DR: The easiest tactic is to help people experience the impact of various pieces of software on their own existence. Does Facebook make them happier? How is it helping them take command of their lives? People sometimes have to become more aware of the surveillance state, the extractive quality of these tools, and the nauseous, empty, angry feeling they have after using this stuff in order to feel motivated to make a change. OSB: Your chapter in Ours to Hack and Own entitled ‘Renaissance now’ explains how we are on the verge of a modern-day renaissance. There is no doubt that revitalising and retrieving lessons, techniques and habits from the past could help bring about change but the last renaissance was also driven by a shift in intellectual thinking. Do you have any thoughts on how, and where, an intellectual shift might come from? DR: I think changes in experience can change people’s world view. If they have terrific experiences working in co-ops or using local currency or simply sharing stuff, then their world view will change. OSB: You explained how “banks were invented to extract value from our transactions not to authenticate transactions”. Do you have any thought on why LETS and time banks haven’t made a more effective transition to the web? DR: I think part of the reason LETS and alternative, trust-enabling systems have not developed is that most people are not actually proud of the value they create. Too many people feel that they don’t have enough to offer, and need to hide behind anonymous cryptocurrencies and traditional anonymizing monetary systems in order to mask things. Meanwhile, if a person is sitting in a cubicle working for a mortgage broker or collecting debt from student loans, how are they supposed to participate in a local LETS system? What real value are they creating for others? Such people find it easier to take some of the cash they’ve made and “invest” it in Ethereum <https://www.ethereum.org/> than… become part of some local favour bank. To create and exchange value, you have to be able to create some value for other humans – not just help some corporation extract value from people. OSB: I am excited about the idea that platform co-ops and the collective ownership of our local facilities and businesses could potentially completely disrupt capitalist democracy as we know it. Where do you stand on ‘working with and within the present system’ vs ‘building a new system which makes the present system obsolete’? DR: Well, I don’t think it’s one or the other. People can vote on public and municipal activities through traditional democratic participation, and people can vote on private and business activities through their participation in cooperatives. I do believe that the more influence real people have on the private sector, the more freedom our public activities will be from corporate control. A platform cooperative is not going to lobby the government for destruction of the environment where its workers are living. So government ends up able to deal with reconciling the different views of its people, rather than that of its people with that of its non-human corporate actors. OSB: Do you think there is a direct correlation between the amount of external investment an organisation accepts (and hence ownership / governing authority it relinquishes) and the real value an organisation has for society? DR: Well, it has more to do with how much a business actually needs to operate and satisfy its market. If a business is really inexpensive to operate, then it doesn’t make sense for that business to take billions of dollars in investment. I know that sounds crazy, but it’s true. If you take billions of dollars of investment, then the people who gave you that money expect to get that money back. This means you need to make billions of dollars in revenue. That’s really hard – especially if you’re a small business that can actually function with just a few thousand dollars. If you take less money, then you are not obligated to grow the business so fast. You are still *allowed* to grow your business fast, but you don’t have to become a multi-billion-dollar business right away. The more money you take, and the less proportioned to the real size of your business, the more power you have to surrender to the people giving you the money. OSB: We are often exposed to the vision of a world full of hate and extremism and scarcity but rarely hear about a positive alternative. If platform co-ops, the solidarity / generative economy take hold it strikes me we could be living in a very different world in the future. Can you describe what you think this world might look like? DR: I’m not a utopian, so I don’t envision a world or economy entirely transformed into a new state where all the value people create is properly registered, the commons is reinstated and appropriately governed, and selfishness is exchanged for true compassion. “The generative, solidarity-inspired economy I envision is one where humanity stands a good chance of making through the next century without going extinct.” The generative, solidarity-inspired economy I envision is one where humanity stands a good chance of making through the next century without going extinct. I am trying to envision a world where global warfare won’t be the only way to prevent impoverished populations from enacting violent revolutions on their own governments. I’m imagining a world where the wealthy don’t simply try to earn even more money in order to insulate themselves from the problems they’ve created by “externalizing” the real costs of their business practices. So the radical alternative I’m envisioning is simply a world where the most extractive and destructive practices don’t absolutely dominate us. Where people have the ability to work for one another if there are no corporate jobs available. I can imagine a near future without people starving in the streets, without China cashing in its chips by purchasing America’s greatest companies and properties, and without a continuation of the shift of wealth from the poor to the rich. I can imagine it not getting significantly worse than it is now, but that will take a huge shift in power and attitude. OSB: What do you see as the main stepping stones for this vision to become a reality? DR: Well, from a policy standpoint, I think a shift in tax policy would do a lot: punish capital gains and reward dividends and revenue. Right now, we punish companies and people who earn money, and reward those who simply extract capital out of the economy. That has to be reversed. People and companies have to look toward earning money with the thing they do, rather than by selling the company itself. You can earn money, or you can “flip” your business (sell it to short-term investors). The latter leads to really bad practices. We also have to accept that growth is an artefact of a currency system, not necessarily a symptom of a healthy economy. There are some economies that may be full grown. OSB: Thanks Douglas, you have given us plenty of food for thought. The proposal that the users might buy back Twitter seems to demonstrate the growing appetite for platforms which are owned and controlled by their members. Here’s hoping more people start to realise the benefits of member ownership and governance, and how this creates a virtuous cycle of value creation. As you say, it seems essential if we’re going to survive the great challenges of our time. *2. Here’s a brand new review of my graphic novel. Aleister & Adolf, which is again available (yes, get it!)* Comic ReviewsAleister and Adolf By Mikee Riggs [image: Aleister and Adolf] *Aleister and Adolf* By Douglas Roushkoff, Illustrated by Michael Avon Oeming Dark Horse Originals 88 pages $19.99 In varying degrees, evil can be viewed as subjective. What someone may perceive as a monster, another person could see as tame. Aleister and Adolfseeks to show you just that. While the book is by no means saying Adolf Hitler wasn't evil, it does paint Aleister Crowley in a better light. To some, Crowley is a man of pure evil. Perhaps the most famous occultist, Crowley's views are often seen as controversial. In Aleister and Adolf Crowley is painted as a deep thinker who at times is very self-centered, but is certainly not evil; in this way, the work is a breath of fresh air. Aleister and Adolf is a work of historical fiction by Douglas Rushkoff and Michael Avon Oeming. At the very beginning of the book, Rushkoff notes "Most of the stuff in this story really happened. The rest may as well have,” implying that the overall story being used to share the facts is an interpretation, but only to a certain degree. The story begins in 1995 with Roberts, a young web developer, attempting to transfer a logo for a company online. The logo is thought to be corrupted, so he goes looking for answers from its original designer. Instead of an easy answer, he finds a story that takes place during World War II involving Aleister Crowley, who is attempting to manipulate and in turn defeat the Nazis. The logo's designer is working for the army and has been tasked with coercing Crowley into helping America seize an item dubbed the Spear of Destiny from Hitler. Roberts soon finds himself sliding deep into a rabbit hole of sexual ritual and occult beliefs. The story itself revolves around the power and deeper meaning of symbols. Crowley is convinced the swastika is feeding Hitler's power and in turn, tries to come up with a strong symbol that can counteract it. The book spends a lot of time digging into the power of symbolism and uses it as a means to show Roberts' descent into occultism. Rushkoff's writing in this graphic novel is astounding. He creates well-crafted characters and uses them expertly to move the story along. The story itself is rich, complex and well researched. Rushkoff has taken the time to learn the subject matter and does it justice without making it seem at all hokey. He manages to tackle Crowley, occultism, the Holocaust and iconography without once making the story feel muddy or bogged down. Backing up this strong plot and taking it to the next level is the art of Michael Avon Oeming. Oeming has been developing his talent for decades now. His work on Powers solidified him as a business mainstay as well as one of the contemporary greats. In Aleister and Adolf, Oeming does some of his best work to date. His style is sharp and concise, making the story even more engaging. His panel work is something to be marveled at. Throughout the book, Oeming creates amazing two- and single-page layouts that jump off the paper. His style is stark but compelling, creating a whole that is nothing short of brilliant. Aleister and Adolf's art alone could be viewed as a master class in graphic storytelling. Overall, this is a strong story about what's on the surface and what meanings are hidden. It asks you to look past its source material and ask questions about the world around you. In a time where questioning what you see is as important as ever, Aleister and Adolf is a must-read book. ---- This is RushkoffList, a monthlyish update and advance look at work in progress. what to think of neo-tribes
by Michel Bauwens 13 Apr '17

13 Apr '17

dear Stacco and Ann-Marie I think David's comments deserve their place as a separate article in our blog, see: via David Ronfeldt: Readings about the tribalization of America — #11: While most readings in this series are about the malignant forms of tribalism polarizing America, this one is about an attempt to foster a positive transnational form called "neo-tribes". The reading is by a collective named NeoTribes, writing "NeoTribal Emergence” (2016). NeoTribes draws its inspiration from philosopher Daniel Quinn's writings recommending "new tribalism" as a way for people to move beyond the ruinous effects of modern civilization and chart a course to a better life. NeoTribes is also associated with the pro-commons P2P (peer-to-peer) movement. The neo-tribal orientation is thus on the Left — but an innovative kind of Left that combines classic tribal and new information-age network types of ideas. And while classic tribes were built around ethnic identities and sought to maximize pride, these neo-tribes are being built around work and lifestyle identities and seek to maximize purpose. NeoTribes agree that tribes were our earliest form of organization, and that "human beings have evolved to live in tribal society as opposed to mass society." They also believe that, because modern civilization has resulted in such untenable waste and destruction, "we’re in the throes of a re-tribalizing moment." So their motto is "The future is tribal". As they see it, "In many ways the “neo-tribal” moment is being ushered in by a deep longing to escape cultures that belong to a bygone era." In a sense, this means starting societies over by reverting back to the tribal form — but NeoTribes is future-oriented, and it means to accomplish more than that. At present, NeoTribes consists of five cutting-edge transnational collectives: OuiShare, Wisdom Hackers, Agora, Sistema B, and Perestroika. But they are just getting going, and will campaign to expand this year. Here're a few passages about the above: "We are a transnational collective of community builders, facilitators, strategists, entrepreneurs, provocateurs, researchers, experience designers and social architects from diverse tribes, serving an emerging paradigm. We delve into different forms of community, networks and subcultures to reveal best practices, tools and experiential knowledge; to "re-mix", share and apply within modern ways of living and organizing. At our core is an effort to create visibility, shared learning and relationship between emerging pockets of insurgency." "We as NeoTribes, an emerging collective of neo-tribal communities, have come together to ask some timely questions and create a frame through which we all may continue to develop common language, wisdom and practical know-how. We are experimental communities searching for viable alternative forms of living in an era of deep transition. We are digital natives yearning for an analogue reality that is marked by the physicality of existence. We strive to align our pace of life with natural rhythms that make space for love, trust, belonging and solidarity – values too often absent from mass society. Since September 2015, we’ve been gathering in digital meeting rooms as well as face-to-face for learning journeys in Brazil, Berlin and Costa Rica, forging bonds of trust between our communities, and making space for reflecting on who we are, where we are heading and why we feel the way we do about the present moment." "Over the course of the next 6-months we will embark on a learning journey, crafting and curating a cookbook of practical “how to” wisdom from over 50+ neo-tribes around key themes related to community design, group practices and rituals, methods of self-organization and facilitation, and tools for governance, financing, and mutualism." One quality I like about NeoTribes is their insistence on combining individualism and collectivism (or mutualism). This is consistent not only with P2P theory's concept of "collective individualism", but also with TIMN theory's view that all four of TIMN's cardinal forms of organization (tribes, institutions, markets, networks) and thus societies as a whole involve both individualism and collectivism — often different kinds and in different ways at different times, but always a combination nonetheless. Here are a few quotes showing this: "[We] aren’t naïvely cocooning ourselves in “Cumbaya collectivism.” We recognize the human need for a community where one can pursue belonging in the context of a collective, while also remaining autonomous, self-expressive and unique. We affirm that each individual should be witnessed and understood, without being pressured to disappear into group identity or camouflage her authenticity. We believe in the power of individual autonomy, and also in the power of mutualism. Many of our tribes are finding new ways to mutualize resources and build commons in the forms of shared operational infrastructure, housing, work spaces, food, and so on – without demanding that anyone martyr themselves for a higher cause." "In constructing our communities, many of us think about how to create a place of shared identity, while also maintaining inclusivity. Traditional tribes are often very closed. You inherit an identity based on kinship and the place you were born. But neo-tribes most often represent your “chosen tribe.” You opt in, and can have multiple tribal allegiances or cycle through different tribes in a lifetime." This insistence by NeoTribes on being for both individualized and mutualist approaches contrasts with the canard I've heard from tribalized conservatives that they are for individualism while liberals /progressives are for collectivism. This canard has awful problems: First, all the liberals I know are for individualism too. Second, conservatives may oppose the collectivism they see in big government and the welfare state, but they like other kinds of collectivism — e.g., family, community, patriotism, etc., not to mention that their tribalism is itself a kind of collectivism. Third, as I noted above, all progress-oriented societies require mixtures of individualism and collectivism, otherwise they cease progressing. This is another area of doctrinal thinking where the tribalization of conservatism has led to a defective defense of a false dichotomy (not to mention that it provides further evidence that conservatives think mainly in terms of boundaries, liberals mainly in terms of horizons). But to get back to the NeoTribes' initiative, here's what else I appreciate: They are for openness, in transnational networked ways, not isolation and exclusivity. They recognize a need for "alternative forms of governance", suited to a next phase of social evolution, "without delusions of separateness to entirely “escape the system”." Indeed, they recognize "the interdependence of personal well-being and structural forces". Furthermore, they prefer to focus on local matters, yet feel part of a global consciousness. In their words, "We long to root down in local contexts, and often find more pride in the cities that we contribute to than the stale rhetoric of participation offered at a national level. At the same time, our digital infrastructure and social media has imparted to us a global consciousness." I see some overlap in all this with TIMN theory about past, present, and future social evolution — but I shall note three points only lightly: First, by combining tribal and network impulses, NeoTribes reflects the TIMN dynamic that each new form starts its rise with a tribal impulse, before it matures and professionalizes around its own distinctive principles. Second, NeoTribes reflects a TIMN dynamic that says efforts will be made to adapt prior forms to new needs — and the neo-tribes movement surely is such an adaptation, suited to the Information age. Third, TIMN is partly and ultimately about the rise of the +N network form and the creation of a new sector based around it. This may be a commons sector, but I think it's still too early to tell. NeoTribes has aspects that fit this, but I don't see that it corresponds fully to +N. Thus, I find the neo-tribes concept quite positive and appealing. Yet, as a TIMN quadriformist, I should temper and qualify my interest. Even so, it's good to read about a tribalism that isn't bitter and vengeful, bad for society. I shall hope that Michel Bauwens and other P2P and NeoTribes proponents eventually take a look at this post. https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/neotribal-emergence/2016/09/05 -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: Reflections on Week 1: Towards the Next System: Transition to Cooperative Commonwealth
by Michel Bauwens 09 Apr '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> Date: Sun, Apr 9, 2017 at 1:02 PM Subject: Re: Reflections on Week 1: Towards the Next System: Transition to Cooperative Commonwealth To: reply+ac18a366eaa86e1e7a06a2821903d91768f58d01-11~ 23394781(a)notifications.canvaslms.com, John Restakis <restakis1(a)gmail.com>, Michael Lewis <Lewiscccr(a)shaw.ca> I am not actively participating in this course nor debate for the moment, but I think something is missing here. What is missing is that Polany was discussing how the people and political forces (in the nation-states) were forcing states to re-embed market forces through national politics (even as it may have occured across different nations) But the balance of forces has profoundly shifted, meaning that if capitalism is understood as Capital-nation-state (as Kojin Karatani suggests in The Structure of World History), then capital has clearly moved at a much strong transnational level of action and power, but nation-states have not. This makes the nation-state revolts inoperable, as can be seen by recent experiences of left governments (Syriza comes to mind). This that both right-wing populist attempts to nationalist and exclusionary protectionism and mercantilism) but also left-wing progressive patriotism, cannot work to instantiate the double movement at the nation-state level. What is needed instead is moving to transnational hegemony of counter-power. Several avenues are open to thus supplement any nation-state policy with such trans-nationalization: 1) global civic power, as exemplified in the emergence of global open design communities 2) global economic counter-power, as exemplified with the emergence of 'phyles', business coalitions around these communities 3) global state power, transnational coalitions of progressive cities This means that the best thing progressive national governments could do is not to confront capital locally, but to focus on the creation and expansion of such institutions of counterpower, at everly level of trans-locality.
