In this short text, he discusses one aspect of labour in the 21st century: how technological progress and low productivity growth fit together. This is arguably one of the most important debates in economics at the moment. (Here <http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/publications/Documents/speeches/2017/speech9…> is another take that I piqd for piqd.de by Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane.) Ryan's argument is that technological progress is *not* too slow, as some have argued. To the contrary, the combination of slow productivity growth and rapid technological progress is not uncommon. Returning to the industrial parallel, it was not the case that James Watt developed his steam engine and everyone said “great, this technology is clearly superior to everything else and we will therefore use it all across the economy”. Rather, it was used in a small number of contexts in which the economics (expensive labour, cheap energy) pushed business owners to experiment. Then, over time, engineers improved the technology and firms built up a wealth of knowledge about how to use it to make a buck. Then eventually the technology was so good that it began to be adopted in places where labour costs were not all that high. He argues that today, "cheap labour is reducing the incentive to push new technologies along a similar path". And technology has helped to keep labour cheap, which has four consequences that he discusses in the final sections of his piece: wages stagnate, bargaining power of labour erodes, the whole economy suffers from a lack of demand, which all combined mean that firms do not invest enough in turning technological progress into usable businesses. It is a very good, thought-provoking read on an important, if not the most important debate in economics at the moment. <https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.piqd.com%2Fb…> <https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=Rapid%20technological%20progress%20vs…> [image: > Read this article on piqd.com] <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/boom-bust/rapid-technological-progress-vs-low…> [image: Rapid technological progress vs. low productivity growth] <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/boom-bust/rapid-technological-progress-vs-low…> Source: Ryan Avent medium.com <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/boom-bust/rapid-technological-progress-vs-low…> 03/16/2017 The productivity paradox - Ryan Avent - Medium <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/boom-bust/rapid-technological-progress-vs-low…> Read article <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/boom-bust/rapid-technological-progress-vs-low…> [image: Piqd email border 85e01894c7d51551c169e0286d31b6d1f51f3a1667cae0eab3a54c596edcd2f3] Your newsletter Not enough information in your newsletter? Fwd: [Commons Transition] De-commodification, abundance and capital for the commons
by Michel Bauwens 06 Apr '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Stacco Troncoso (Loomio) <notifications(a)loomio.org> Date: Thu, Apr 6, 2017 at 5:38 PM Subject: [Commons Transition] De-commodification, abundance and capital for the commons To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com [image: Stacco Troncoso] * Stacco Troncoso * started a thread: * De-commodification, abundance and capital for the commons <https://www.loomio.org/ahoy/messages/V7tYgMA7NwGbgXcCM5S9soO5fEqHaox5/click…> * Spanish economist Susana Martin Belmonte’s work is nothing less than groundbreaking. Among other things, she deals with the emergence of the pro-sumer class, P2P production and distribution, the Commons, and the potential of social and alternative currencies at the macro-scale and State level — not just in isolated pockets. Unfortunately, her work is not widely available in English and she’s not very well known outside Spain. To change that, here’s an interview I conducted with her for our “100 Women Co-creating P2P Society” series. Please read and comment. I will try to get Susana to join the Loomio group. (BTW, this group has evolved into being very gender imbalanced). Susana Martín Belmonte on de-commodification, abundance and capital for the commons <https://www.loomio.org/ahoy/messages/V7tYgMA7NwGbgXcCM5S9soO5fEqHaox5/click…> Here’s an excerpt from the interview: “Abundance is a new economic frame in which scarcity cannot be preserved. Economics used to be about managing scarce resources, but scarcity has turned out to be not a condition to overcome, but the Holy Grail to access monetary wealth for some. Meanwhile, it overlooks other types of scarcity, like our capacity to pollute the air without destroying the planet. There is no economic value without scarcity. But scarcity is dying in the highest levels of innovation, in the very heart of the digital revolution. For the first time, the evolution of the economic system is not leading to higher productivity or sales, but just the opposite.” — Reply to this email directly or view it on www.loomio.org <https://www.loomio.org/ahoy/messages/V7tYgMA7NwGbgXcCM5S9soO5fEqHaox5/click…>.
