Fwd: Marxism and Ecology: Common Fonts of a Great Transition (GTN Discussion)
by Michel Bauwens 13 Sep '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Great Transition Network <gtnetwork(a)greattransition.org> Date: Sat, Sep 12, 2015 at 10:07 PM Subject: Marxism and Ecology: Common Fonts of a Great Transition (GTN Discussion) To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com >From Fred Magdoff <fmagdoff(a)uvm.edu> ------------------------------------------------------- Reflections on the essay by John Bellamy Foster The Great Transitions Initiative is a reflection of the growing understanding that the very way capitalism functions is at the center of the ecological crisis that befalls the earth and its inhabitants. For this reason, people associated with the Initiative have written that they “…envision the advent of a new development paradigm redirecting the global trajectory toward a socially equitable, culturally enriched, and ecologically resilient planetary civilization.” But why does capitalism—which I would describe as an economic system rather than a “development paradigm”— need replacing? What would a “socially equitable, culturally enriched, and ecologically resilient planetary civilization” be like? The significance of Karl Marx for the GTI is that his work offers a comprehensive analysis and understanding of capitalism—not only as an economic system, but also its political, social, and ecological ramifications. The development of his ideas and theories did not come out of the thin air. Rather, they were based on an incredible amount of hard work—detailed studies of history, economics, anthropology, science, and consultation of government documents. As John Bellamy Foster has laid out in detail, Marx and Frederick Engels were aware of the negative effects that capitalism was having on the ecosystem. Their remarkable writings contain what can only be considered as advanced ecological concepts, very much concerned with the human interaction (metabolism) with the rest of natural world, especially in relation to the growth of capitalist economies in the 19th Century. Let me summarize my view of the key ideas that come directly out of the Marxist tradition as they relate to our current environmental crisis: The “laws of motion” of capitalist economies govern the operation of the system at its most basic level and compels it to strive to attain continual growth of individual firms (with competition and buyouts destroying some in the process, leading to larger and larger companies) and the entire economy. In the process, capitalism expands geographically to become a world system—something that was evident from its very inception in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. There can be no such system as “no-growth capitalism.” For when growth falters (recessions and depressions), the system is in economic crisis, with much human suffering. Also, there can be no such concept as “enough” in capitalist economies, because in order to accumulate ever greater amounts of capital—the driving force of the system—new products are created continually and more of all products must be sold next year than this one. This drives a complex and multifaceted sales effort—amounting to some ten percent of the economy— to convince people that they “need” these products. Capitalists and their allies also work politically, militarily, and economically to eliminate barriers to accumulation of profits—the unstated, but underlying, goal of deregulation efforts, reduced taxes on corporations and the wealthy, the multilateral trade agreements such as NAFTA, the WTO, covert actions to destabilize “unfriendly” governments, and outright warfare. As capitalism normally operates, what economists nowadays call “externalities” are created—negative social and ecological effects. Not needing to avoid or remedy the “externalities” (except for a few regulations to curb some of the excesses) is key to understanding why capitalism is so profitable. As Engels wrote in the 19th Century: “What cared the Spanish planters in Cuba, who burned down forests on the slopes of the mountains and obtained from the ashes sufficient fertiliser for one generation of very highly profitable coffee trees – what cared they that the heavy tropical rainfall afterwards washed away the unprotected upper stratum of the soil, leaving behind only bare rock! In relation to nature, as to society, the present mode of production is predominantly concerned only about the immediate, the most tangible result...”(1) It is capitalism’s inability to rationally regulate the human interaction with nature and its resources that results in environmental crises (local, regional, and global) as well as depletion of resources, threatening the lives of generations to come. This is the problem addressed in Marx’s famous theory of the metabolic rift. As Naomi Klein notes in This Changes Everything, “Karl Marx…recognized capitalism’s ‘irreparable rift’ with ‘the natural laws of life itself’…[Today] the Earth’s capacity to absorb the filthy byproducts of global capitalism’s voracious metabolism is maxing out.” (2) Fulfilling everyone’s basic needs on an equitable basis so as to allow for the development of each person’s full human potential will require the conscious regulation of the interactions between humans and resources. While this does not guarantee an ecologically sound economy, attaining such a goal is inconceivable without the people who actually do the work taking into account the needs of posterity. For example, if local fisheries are under the control of people in coastal villages—rather than in the hands of large commercial trawlers owned by companies trying to maximize profits—there is the need to fish in ways that preserve the productivity (or better yet, reproductivity) of this important resource. The only way to consciously regulate the interaction with resources is through a democratic approach that takes seriously Marx’s contention, that Foster quotes—“Even an entire society, a nation, or all simultaneously existing societies taken together, are not owners of the earth. They are simply its possessors, it beneficiaries, and have to bequeath it in an improved state to succeeding generations as boni patres familias [good heads of the household].” Some thoughts of basic principles, practices, and operating procedures of such an economy and society have been outlined in my article, “An Ecologically Sound and Socially Just Economy”— www.monthlyreview.org/2014/09/01/an-ecologically-sound-and-socially-just-ec… . 1. Fred Magdoff ************************************ Tuesday, September 1, 2015 >From Paul Raskin <praskin(a)tellus.org> ----- Dear GTN, Our SEPTEMBER DISCUSSION focuses on an important new essay by John Bellamy Foster, “Marxism and Ecology: Common Fonts of a Great Transition.” Foster, the editor of Monthly Review, traces the origins of Marxian concepts, and discovers deep ecological roots that anticipate such contemporary notions as sustainable development and planetary boundaries. The way I see it, industrial capitalism spawned two powerful oppositional streams: social justice and environmental protection. For much of their history, these movements were mutually suspicious (insofar as they even heeded one another). Many social justice proponents saw environmentalism as a preserve of the elite; environmentalists found unacceptable social change agendas that failed to extend their critique to the system’s impacts on nature. Moreover, the dismal environmental record of “actually existing socialism” reinforced the perception that socialism is as feckless as capitalism. Now, Foster illuminates the historical record and closes the fissure, finding the foundations for a modernized ecological socialism that can play a key role in building an integrated planetary praxis. I encourage you to read the essay at www.greattransition.org/publication/marxism-and-ecology and to share your thoughts and questions. Comments are welcome through SEPTEMBER 30. Fwd: [bgcon] Refugee Policies: "Never Home" > UN|COMMONS

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Krystian Woznicki <kw(a)berlinergazette.de> Date: Mon, Sep 7, 2015 at 4:16 PM Subject: [bgcon] Refugee Policies: "Never Home" > UN|COMMONS To: digi-yards(a)berlinergazette.de Hello, activist and writer **Harsha Walia** from "No One is Illegal" in Vancouver, who is speaker at UN|COMMONS conference, has just put together an amazing online multimedia report on the Canadian govt's immigration and refugee policies. It's a very impressive piece of online, collaborative work entitled**Never Home** > http://neverhome.ca Coincidentally, it launched just a day or two before the most recent heartbreaking stories out of **Turkey**, with news that the family of the drowned boy had been denied refugee status in Canada by the present government. As I have just heard in a message from **Max Haiven**, who will be also a guest at the UN|COMMONS conference, "Canada is now amidst general elections, and refugee questions have, at least for now, become the key issue. So the report Harsha and others worked on is now very central to national debates, which is quite exciting. The former immigration minister even took time away from campaigning to slander them in the press and on Twitter." Check our Harsha Walia on Wikipedia:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harsha_Walia Please scroll down for Harshas message explaining further details about the context of "Never Home". Please spread the word! Krystian -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: Never Home & Refugees Welcome Date: Sun, 06 Sep 2015 16:45:20 -0400 From: harsha(a)resist.ca It's been a tremendous week in migrant justice. Like all of you, I am continuously horrified and pained at the photos pouring in of the global refugee crisis unfolding before our eyes. This has been going on for years and then last week the photos and news hit of the Kurdi family and their attempts to come to Canada. This has, finally, rightfully sparked national and international outrage, as well as immense solidarity. The Kurdi family are three of almost 60 million displaced people around the globe this year, and over 45,000 people have died crossing borders since 2000. Even though international leaders posture about 'humanitarian solutions', the reality is that the roots of the crisis remain unaddressed and borders remain closed. AS MAX FISHER WRITES, “A SINGLE DEAD REFUGEE CHILD IS A TRAGEDY, BUT A MILLION SUFFERING REFUGEES ARE A THREAT." THE NUMBER OF REFUGEE CLAIMS IN CANADA DECREASED BY 50 PERCENT AND THE NUMBER OF ACCEPTED REFUGEES DROPPED BY 30 PERCENT BETWEEN 2006 AND 2012. The federal government deported 117,531 people between 2006 and 2014, including to countries with official moratoriums on deportation. I know these statistics inside and out because this week we released our multimedia project HTTP://WWW.NEVERHOME.CA [1] ON THIS GOVERNMENT'S DISCRIMINATORY IMMIGRATION AND REFUGEE POLICY OVER THE PAST DECADE. Never Home has garnered lots of attention and the Toronto Star calls it [2] "an innovative multimedia project that puts a human face on the impact of the drastic changes made by the Conservative government to the immigration and refugee system in the past decade." Here is an oped I wrote on it in the Vancouver Sun:http://www.vancouversun.com/life/Opinion+does+Canada+jail+migrants/1133… [3] Fifty people have spent over one thousand unpaid hours to bring these stories and information to you because we know that lives depend on it. Lives like the Kurdi family. AS DIANA, SHARES IN NEVER HOME, _"IT WAS THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT THAT REALLY KILLED MY DAD... I DON’T WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO ANYBODY ELSE LIKE IT DID TO MY FAMILY." _Our comprehensive_Never Home_ [1] website features a report with multilingual resources, videos and stories of migrants, and high impact visuals. I ask you to take some time to check out _Never Home_ [1], to talk about it with your friends and family, and share it with your networks. This week newspapers are also filled with headlines of Harper and European leaders saying that further military action in Syria is necessary to resolve the crisis. (Here Sozan Savelaghi's response to this on CTV National News Channel: http://on.fb.me/1NWtrNV [4]) This makes me so angry and I have a lot of rage. Rage because FURTHER MILITARIZATION WILL NOT BRING LIBERATION and exclusionary border policies kill. Rage that families have to make **private** sponsorships and wait over a year instead of the government welcoming refugees. Rage that many Canadians believe refugees are terrorists, undesirable, unwelcome. Rage that politicians have no context for living in war zones, have no context for deep poverty, for trauma, for running from bombs and still feel they can judge whether others are 'legitimate' refugees or not. CANADA IS NOT ONLY COMPLICIT IN REFUGEE EXCLUSION, BUT ALSO COMPLICIT IN CREATING MASSIVE DISPLACEMENT AROUND THE WORLD, JUST AS IT DOES UPON THESE INDIGENOUS LANDS - from its role in the coups in Haiti, to Canadian corporations creating devastation like Nevsun in Eritrea or Goldcorp in Honduras, to Canada's overwhelming role in causing climate change that impacts countries like Bangladesh and the Philippines and at the same time forcing export-free zones and Structural Adjustment policies that ensures the exploitation of labour within (like sweatshops) and from (like the temporary foreign worker program) these countries. NAOMI KLEIN focused a talk yesterday on the refugee crisis and these kinds of connections, watch here: http://youtu.be/a5LuIAJEFUc [5] This is not inevitable. WE CAN ALL CREATE THE MOMENTUM NECESSARY TO SHIFT FROM INDIFFERENCE AND RACISM TO SOLIDARITY. Around the world and across Canada [6], tens of thousands are taking to the streets declaring "Refugees Welcome." I have received dozens of humbling messages from Indigenous land defenders, friends and mentors offering refuge based on Indigenous laws and protocols, affirming _No One Is Illegal, Canada Is Illegal_. German residents have convinced their government to allow over 800,000 refugees to enter the country, while over 10,000 Icelandic families have opened their homes to refugees. It's time for us to collectively assert the freedom to move, stay and return. _IN THE WORDS OF LATE GREAT EDUARDO GALEANO "THE WORLD WAS BORN YEARNING TO BE A HOME FOR EVERYONE."_ Thanks for reading xo Harsha Links: ------ [1] http://www.neverhome.ca [2]http://www.thestar.com/news/immigration/2015/09/02/migrants-slam-impact-o… [3]http://www.vancouversun.com/life/Opinion+does+Canada+jail+migrants/113303… [4] http://on.fb.me/1NWtrNV [5] http://youtu.be/a5LuIAJEFUc [6] https://www.facebook.com/events/1703064886579884/ -- ------------------------------------------------- UN|COMMONS The Fight For Common Wealth | October 22-24 Workshops, Talks, Performances + Cooking Volksbühne at Rosa-Luxemburg Platz | Berlin Program: http://berlinergazette.de/uncommons ------------------------------------------------- Info auf Deutsch:http://berlinergazette.de/deutsch/uncommons _______________________________________________ Digi-yards_berlinergazette.de mailing list digi-yards(a)berlinergazette.de https://ml06.ispgateway.de/mailman/listinfo/digi-yards_berlinergazette.de -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Crowdfunding campaign for PeerBay
by george dafermos 10 Sep '15

10 Sep '15

The PeerBay <https://github.com/PeerBay> development team needs to raise 40,000USD to complete the development of the PeerFeed project. For that purpose, it has launched a crowd-funding campaign on Indiegogo, calling for the support of the open source and peer-to-peer user community: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/peerbay#/story PeerFeed is a social networking platform based on the decentralization of the basic infrastructures involved in such platforms, on the encryption of data and the use of onion routing (like TOR) with the aim of ensuring the anonymity and privacy of users. *It allows for encrypted video-calls, anonymous chat and file sharing and provides fully encrypted versions of the features commonly found in social networking platforms. *It is based on multiple cheap servers using home ADSL connections, which makes it invulnerable against attacks by state and non-state organizations.

Fwd: [commoning] SAVE THE DATE: Internet as a Commons at the EU Parliament, 1st of October 15:00-18:30
by Kevin Flanagan 07 Sep '15

07 Sep '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Sophie Bloemen <sophie(a)commonsnetwork.eu> Date: 7 September 2015 at 16:09 Subject: [commoning] SAVE THE DATE: Internet as a Commons at the EU Parliament, 1st of October 15:00-18:30 To: commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org The Green Group, The Commons Network and the Heinrich Böll Foundation bring you the most relevant conference of the year: Internet as a Commons: Public Space in the Digital Age. Here we will explore the need for a comprehensive new narrative for the Internet. A narrative that frames Internet as a common good, accessible by all, and managed by a plurality of actors in a way benefiting society at large. In other words: as a Commons. BACKGROUND The Internet has become an important part of our global public sphere. Internet provides access to a wealth of information and knowledge, and the possibility to participate, create and communicate. This public space made up of internet infrastructures is increasingly threatened from two sides; by the centralization and commercialization through the dominant positions held by giant telecom and Internet companies, as well as by an increasing trend in state regulation and censorship of the net. This poses important questions about how we choose to organize and regulate our digital societies, and how Internet governance models can be developed and implemented to ensure fair and democratic participation. When it comes to the future of the Internet, a key discussion is one of infrastructures; who owns, runs and controls them. The question of regulation, and who oversees the regulators, is made complicated by the transnational nature of the net. The debates around net neutrality, infrastructure neutrality and Internet monopolies reflect the important choices that are to be made. It is essential the EU formulates a comprehensive vision on the internet that addresses the protection of civil liberties such as free speech and privacy, but also the growing commercialization of our digital public spaces and the commodification of personal data with the effect of the market encroaching on all aspects of our daily lives. Only then can it make relevant interventions regarding the Internet and its governance. Let´s discuss how to re-decentralize and reclaim the Internet for all. *This conference will be live streamed at: http://greenmediabox.eu/en/live/ <http://greenmediabox.eu/en/live/>* Background & Programme: http://www.greens-efa.eu/internet-as-a-commons-13850.html Joint the event community on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/939398269451418/ Registration: http://www.greens-efa.eu/events/registrations/658-internet-as-a-commons.html _______________________________________________ Commoning mailing list Commons-Institut e.V. Contribution and recognition

Although social recognition is very important, and though contributions often lead to social recognition, and though I believe that contributions will be a primary generator of social recognition in a commons-based society, I do not hold that people only contribute out of fear, i.e. negative extrinsic motivation. On the contrary, for about ten years, I have insisted that peer production is mostly passionate production, i.e. instrinsic, and multi-motivational. The idea that contributions are incentived by recognition is a neoliberal idea that I do not hold.
