Hola Compañeras, *compañeroas* y compañeros! 4th Festival for Solidarity & Cooperative Economy Academia Platonos Park- Athens Members of various solidarity networks, cooperative initiatives and innovative structures in Greece organise, for the fourth time in a row, the Festival for Solidarity & Cooperative Economy. The festival will take place in Athens in the 16-17-18th of October in Plato’s Academy Park. This year we would like to focus exclusively in action and highlight remarkable practices aiming to inspire society and prove that there are those alternatives that can help us meet our needs. We want to open more to society and to shout even louder our slogan "*Another world is real*" and necessary more than ever. A world based on creativity, self-sufficiency, sustainability and solidarity. For this reason we will create in the festival, an autonomous village in which practical workshops will be held, answers to basic questions will be given and discussions will be taking place. In the thematic corners of the village, the visitor will be able to meet or learn how to cover his needs for food, health, education, labor, energy, technology, housing, transportation etc. and find a way to express himself and create with his fellow villagers. Inside the festival will also function our alternative currency that we will use to make transactions with selected producers. Clothes and books exchange bazaar and collective kitchen will take place. People offering work (villagers) will be rewarded with free food for their services . The aim of the festival is to give a practical example of another world that is here, to prove that we can live in a different way. There will be presented an important effort to continuity of the functioning of the autonomous village beyond the end of the festival, through the creation of the Integral Cooperative in Athens. The Solidarity & Cooperative Economy Festival advocates a world that promotes communication and mutual exchange aiming to move towards a society based on participation and cooperation, self-management, solidarity, sustainability, self-sufficiency and respect to nature and human. We want the festival to speak to the hearts of those who seek alternative humane solutions. To provide inspiration for launching similar initiatives in other greek cities. We want to unite and together make it happen. We are waiting for you! Fwd: [CommonGood] solidarity economy, commons and solidarity4all
by Michel Bauwens 28 Sep '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Schepers, Norbert <schepers(a)rosalux.de> Date: Mon, Sep 28, 2015 at 1:16 AM Subject: [CommonGood] solidarity economy, commons and solidarity4all To: Common Good Newsgroup <commongood(a)listi.jpberlin.de> *From: bir.dai(a)hotmail.com <bir.dai(a)hotmail.com> * *Subject: solidarity economy, commons and solidarity4all Date: Fri, 25 Sep 2015 18:41:48 +0200 * Dear Friends and Colleagues, recently I was participating in an interesting conference on solidarity economy and commons in Berlin. Voilà, here is my report. Since some years the „Forum für solidarische Ökonomie“ ( www.solidarische-oekonomie.de) is organising national conferences on solidarity economy in Germany. This year it took place in Berlin (10/13/9) under the headline “Solidarity Economy and Transformation” ( www.solikon2015.org) While in the past it was more or less a commemoration of veteran performers, there was something different this year: a new generation of young motivated people is experimenting with cooperative initiatives and commons, organising alternative festivals, free-software-cooperatives, workers’ controlled enterprises, classical ecological farming coops, community housing-projects, alternative Finance-circles, even projects promoting utopian economic relationships by a culture of donation – without any fixed exchange of goods or money – were presented and during the three days conference about 1 500 people were attending the events. And another new element in the organisation of alternative conferences in Germany finally appeared: For the first time European and South-South-initiatives were genuine part of the conference – and the Forums were translated in the main (western) languages. In more than 190 Forums, workshops and panel sessions activists presented their projects and discussed further strategies. The connection between classical solidarity economy and the international development of commons-networks as well as in at least five workshops issues of the international Commons-debate were discussed (see below). Specific workshops were dedicated to solidarity-economy and commons in *Greece*. Following 1.) a short report on some events concerning solidarity actions with Greece and 2.) a report on some of the workshops on commons. *1.) Solidarity4all-Network Greece* (No plan B or C – just participate in the developing solidarity economy and commons in Greece). In Greece many creative resistance initiatives developed under the threat of the European austerity-regime. The 2012 from Syriza-Activists created network and funds „solidarity4all – www.solidarity4all.gr. is a appropriate platform to develop solidarity activities. 2015 already more than 800 social and solidarity enterprises exist. They are active in all kind of fields: Agriculture, Media, New Technologies, Consumer Cooperatives, Distribution Services, Cafes and Bars, cooperative Tourism and others. They defend public spaces, create self-managed social centres, no-pay-initiatives, about more than 400 solidarity projects already exist today. Including solidarity kitchens, collective farms, agricultural cooperatives of all kind they distribute their products and services without middlemen markets – social groceries . And already well documented are the 48 social clinics and pharmacies. Three examples: In the *Metropolitan Community Clinic at Helliniko* are working more than 200 volonteers. The clinic receives donations from fellow citizens all over Europe. See: www.mkiellinikou.org/en The project *PERKA* is an urban gardening-project in Thessaloniki on an abandoned military space of 16 ha. Since 2011, residents of Thessaloniki have been occupying part of the former Karatsou military base, located in the Pavlos Melas district in the north of the city. The Perka project, as a *periastikon** kalliergeion* (Urban farming ) gives this name to each of the 7 plots maintained by a group of volunteers who grow plants and crops individually or collectively. Based on the principles of collegiality, self-management and equality, the general operation seems simple. The gardeners only practice organic agriculture (biodynamic for some), and comply with several requirements established as a charter. www.perka.org *VIO.ME <http://VIO.ME>. *The workers controlled enterprise in Thessaloniki still needs massive international solidarity – not only by developing chains to distribute their product,, The workers of Vio.Me., a building materials factory in Thessaloniki, Greece, which was abandoned by its owners, have been unpaid since May 2011. By decision of their general assembly they have decided to occupy the factory and operate it under direct democratic workers’ control. After a year-long struggle that has attracted attention and solidarity in Greece and worldwide, they were kick-starting production on February 12, 2013, after 3 days of intense mobilization. Meanwhile the workers lost two existential cases at Court but still occupy the factory and produce biological cleansing agents and soap – distributed by solidarity chains through Europe. www.viome.org In a separate meeting between Greek and German activists possibilities of cooperation were discussed. The Greek activists proposed *Memorandum of Solidarity *to be developed soon. German activists asking for opportunities to cooperate presented their ideas and discussed it with the Greek activists: To build solidarity chains for the distribution of ecologically and socially produced goods (b.de. Olive Oil) in German Fair-Trade-nets and shop; To organise public events and use Media to counter the political terror and black-mailing of the EU-Council against Greece; To build local cooperation networks – and, as already started in Berlin (see: www.initiative-respekt-fuer-griechenland.de) initiatives to motivate local authorities to create city-partnerships with Greek communities. *2. From Commons to Commonism* At least five workshops concentrated on Commons. There was a remarkable participation of European and International activists in these seminars. Various Presentations of projects in Europe, Canada, USA and from Brasilia, mostly concerning common Land- and Housing-Trusts, urban gardening and agriculture as well as the Digital Commons were followed by more theoretical debates. In all workshops the common understanding was: commoning and commons are the appropriate method to confront the destructive capitalist system with alternative paths of development. The Land- and Housing-Trust initiatives show the necessary new relationship between public and commons: Commons need to be protected institutionally and there is a new relationship between public and civil society partnerships arising: Instead of Public-Private-Partnerships Initiatives create Public-Social-Partnerships. To give an impression about the presentations and debates here some rather arbitrary examples of the Land-and-Housing-projects presented in the workshops: The Island of EIGG/Scotland: the citizens bought the small Island (belonging to the Inner Hebrides) together and built up a common autonomous system with renewable energy-sources. The Champlain Housing Trust (Burlington/Vermont in USA) comprises about 2 300 houses to rent or to own. Similar success-stories were reported from Brooklyn/NY: They started squatting houses in NY, united equity houses and created homes for people with low income. Then they developed other common activities as food-cooperatives and local credit unions. The „Evergreen-Cooperatives“ in Cleveland a Community Land- and Housing-Trust helps people with lower income to secure their social situation and develop other activities as there are locally centred services and goods and credit unions, kindergardens and ecologically based food-cooperatives. One participant of the seminar called the spirit of commoning “a common weel”. The LILAC-project in Leeds/UK is a pioneering project trying to respond to three key-issues: the financial crisis, the threat of global warming and the breakdown of local communities. The plot comprises 20 dwellings with shared gardens. The houses are completely built with ecological materials and use solar water heating. Services like childcare, group meals and others are already working. „All this contributes to reducing the inhabitants’ environmental and economic footprint“. The „Mietshäusersyndikat“ is organising activities of small communities living in rented houses to avoid speculative rents. Already 98 projects in Germany take part in these activities. With the French SCIC (Sociéte coopératives d’intérêt collectif a legal form for solidarity economy) founded so far 486 projects/enterprises all over the country and general information is provided on www.encommun.org Besides these reports a more theoretical debate took place too. Pat Conaty from NEF (New Economic Foundation) refered to Elinor Ostrom and calls Commons-theory a relation-theory. He differentiated three functionary levels to create commons: the resource level, the institutional level and the social relationships. Pat Conaty and Mike Lewis from CCCR (Canadian Centre for Community Renewal) asked politics to provide the right conditions to make communing easier and said, each of the commons needed to be protected institutionally. The main slogans of these workshops where: *- Transform the system and make it democratic.* *- Provide the conditions to make commoning easier: Commons need to be protected institutionally.* *- Commoning allows to create a new kind of public-social-partnership * *- Starting with one activity, communing very often is going on creating very different common activities.* Last comment: between basic theory and practise still missing the strategic dimension of debates – see BD’s introduction to the commons-debate at WSF Tunis. And, just for information: from *10 to 17 Oct. all over Europe action-days against TTIP and CETA* – Free Trade Agreements between EU/USA and EU/Canada - in many EU-countries are organised. The German national central Manif will be on Oct. 10 in Berlin. Further information under www.labournet.de/2p=40247 (in German) and www.stop-ttip.org. Although they sound laudable, they are actually a neoliberal fig leaf, a distraction really, to prevent us from the real work of rewriting the rules of the economy. They require a 12x increase in global GDP in 15 years in order to be achieved because they don't tackle inequality, wealth distribution, rampant consumption or perpetual growth. I would like to ask for your support in this campaign by signing onto our Open Letter to the United Nations <http://therules.org/petition/sdg-open-letter/>. It has been co-signed by Noam Chomsky, Eve Ensler, Chris Hedges, Naomi Klein, Thomas Pogge, Maude Barlow, Anuradha Mittal, David Graeber, and others. For their own reasons, European leftists are justified to celebrate Syriza's victory. However in Greece, the social movements are demobilised and unprepared to confront the new wave of austerity measures. High abstention is a sign of social disenchantment and loss of faith in representative democracy. Far from being a moment of celebration, this situation calls for critical reflection, both within the left and within the social movements. http://www.autonomias.net/2015/09/nothing.html in solidarity, Teo autonomias.net twitter.com/TebeoTeo ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ...buscar y saber reconocer quién y qué, en medio del infierno, no es infierno, y hacer que dure, y dejarle espacio... -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: [commoning] Internet as a Commons - Public Space in the Digital Age - Brussels, October 1st 15-18.30 hours
by Michel Bauwens 21 Sep '15

21 Sep '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Heike Loeschmann <Loeschmann(a)boell.de> Date: Tue, Sep 22, 2015 at 12:33 AM Subject: [commoning] Internet as a Commons - Public Space in the Digital Age - Brussels, October 1st 15-18.30 hours To: commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org The Green Group, The Commons Network and the Heinrich Böll Foundation invite you to a most relevant debate: *Internet as a Commons - Public Space in the Digital Age.* We will explore the need for a comprehensive new narrative for the Internet. A narrative that frames Internet as a common good, accessible by all, and managed by a plurality of actors in a way benefiting society at large. In other words: as a Commons. BACKGROUND The Internet has become an important part of our global public sphere. Internet provides access to a wealth of information and knowledge, and the possibility to participate, create and communicate. This public space made up of internet infrastructures is increasingly threatened from two sides; by the centralization and commercialization through the dominant positions held by giant telecom and Internet companies, as well as by an increasing trend in state regulation and censorship of the net. This poses important questions about how we choose to organize and regulate our digital societies, and how Internet governance models can be developed and implemented to ensure fair and democratic participation. When it comes to the future of the Internet, a key discussion is one of infrastructures; who owns, runs and controls them. The question of regulation, and who oversees the regulators, is made complicated by the transnational nature of the net. The debates around net neutrality, infrastructure neutrality and Internet monopolies reflect the important choices that are to be made. It is essential the EU formulates a comprehensive vision on the internet that addresses the protection of civil liberties such as free speech and privacy, but also the growing commercialization of our digital public spaces and the commodification of personal data with the effect of the market encroaching on all aspects of our daily lives. Only then can it make relevant interventions regarding the Internet and its governance. Let´s discuss how to re-decentralize and reclaim the Internet for all. *This conference will be live streamed at: http://greenmediabox.eu/en/live/%20%3Chttp://greenmediabox.eu/en/live/%3E* <http://greenmediabox.eu/en/live/%20%3Chttp:/greenmediabox.eu/en/live/%3E*> Registration for life participation: http://www.greens-efa.eu/events/registrations/658-internet-as-a-commons.html Background & Programme: http://www.greens-efa.eu/internet-as-a-commons-13850.html Join the event community on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/939398269451418/ Contact: Sophie Bloemen Commons Network +49 (0)170 2827005 +31 (0) 649957744 Dr. Heike Löschmann Referat Internationale Politik Heinrich Böll Stiftung +49-3028534318 _______________________________________________ Commoning mailing list Commons-Institut e.V. Fwd: [NetworkedLabour] Value, Rent, and the polical economy of social media
by Michel Bauwens 20 Sep '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jakob Rigi <rigij(a)ceu.edu> Date: Sun, Sep 20, 2015 at 6:22 PM Subject: [NetworkedLabour] Value, Rent, and the polical economy of social media To: Jakob Rigi <RigiJ(a)ceu.edu>, orsan1234(a)gmail.com, networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org Value, Rent, and The Political Economy of Social Media Jakob Rigi and Robert Prey Abstract Fuchs (2010 <http://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/ScaUrsyDi4FzNZk6nWWC/full#cit0014>, 2012) argues that users of social media produce value and surplus value in the Marxian sense. Arvidsson and Colleoni (2012 <http://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/ScaUrsyDi4FzNZk6nWWC/full#cit0007>) critique this hypothesis, claiming that Marx's theory of value is irrelevant to the regime of value production on social media platforms in particular and in informational capitalism in general. They claim that the affective relations and financial speculations that generate value on social media are not dependent on labor time. This article critically engages Fuchs, and Arvidsson and Colleoni, by revisiting Marx's theory of value. Contra Fuchs, we argue that audiences do not produce value and surplus value—neither for social nor for mass media. Contra Arvidsson and Colleoni, we argue that so-called affective relations (philia) do not produce value either. Instead we demonstrate that social media generate revenue from four primary sources—by leasing advertisement space to generate advertisement rent, by selling information, by selling services to advertisers, and by generating profits from fictitious capital and speculative windfalls. All four, we argue, can be adequately explained by Marx's theory of value. The article is published in The Information Society 2015, October, Issue 5. You can read a pre-.copyedited version on Academia. edu You can also print the article from: http://ww.tandfonline.com/printScalUrsyDi4FZNK6NWWC1/full Note, that Routlelge unfortunately only on allows the printing of 50 copies. Fwd: Windhammer Prize 2015
by Michel Bauwens 20 Sep '15

20 Sep '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Andy Robinson <ldxar1(a)gmail.com> Date: Sun, Sep 20, 2015 at 2:43 PM Subject: Windhammer Prize 2015 To: Hi everyone, and apologies for spamming :-) It's Windhammer Prize time again - voting opened a couple of days ago. http://www.arborell.com/windhammer_prize.html For the third year running, I've got an entry in the competition, under the pen name Andy Moonowl. The competition is for gamebooks (interactive fiction in which the reader makes choices), and my entry is a transforming robot story set on a world of robots. http://www.arborell.com/mechanoidsfightordie.pdf I'm hoping you will consider voting for my entry :-) Voting instructions from the site: *A valid vote must be forwarded by email to vote(a)arborell.com <vote(a)arborell.com>. A valid vote must nominate the three gamebooks most favoured by the voter from the competition entrants. A vote with less than three nominations cannot be accepted.* The site also says that voting should be on the basis of reading enough of the entries to make an informed choice. So please have a look at the entries, and then send an email to vote(a)arborell.com nominating my gamebook *and two others*. If you're wondering which ones to read and possibly vote for, I've not read them myself yet. Philip Armstrong, ChanSing Goh, Nicholas Stillman, Andy Wright, and Stuart Lloyd all have past records of success in the competition. Stillman usually writes dark, violent dystopias. Goh has entered history entries (with a worrying imperial slant) in the past, but this year's entry is fantasy. By complete coincidence, Steffen Hagen has also written a robot gamebook set in a world of robots. Adam Johnson and Felicity Banks have entered historical gamebooks in settler-colonial settings (South Africa and Australia respectively) - I'll be interested to see how they handle racial politics. S.A.'s entry is dystopian science-fiction. The other six entries - Jac Colvin, Richard Penwarden, John Evans, Robert Douglas, Tammy Badowski and Ivailo Daskalov - appear to be medieval fantasy adventures.
