I recommend that everyone reads Brian Holmes' analysis of the current
situation, and my response / questions

Very interesting contribution, from Brian, as usual <g>
I copy Jaap as he just made a presentation about the euro-asiatic corridor
that Brian is referring to.
I see two issues that need to be covered. I share Brian's view of the
possibility of a new kondratieff wave, which I called some years ago, the
'the high road to p2p' (high, because, even though it is capitalist, it
would be more smoothly creating p2p infrastructures in a context of growth
and redistribution, rather than low: bottom-up survivalist p2p in the
context of global dislocation); such a high road, I argued then, would
necessarily incorporate both green and p2p/distributed elements;
however, it is important that such k-wave growth would require at the same
time deep structural reforms, of the kind undertaken by roosevelt in the
30s and by european post-war govt's after WWII (and now we would need this
type of reconfiguration:
http://p2pfoundation.net/Russia_and_the_Next_Long_Wave)
Yet, we see nothing on this sort. This could mean that the scenario would
be that following the 1873 meltdown, not a consistent growth, but a long
series of enduring crisis, ultmately leading to world war and the russian
revolution; but the difference is, there are now much more serious problems
to deal with: energy and resource crisis, climate change, soil depletion
and so much more grave social crisis.
What this would mean is that, all the potential for growth that we see
(smart cities, internet of things, etc ..) may actually not be able to be
used by capitalism for a growth wave.
So my question to you Brian is: what makes you so sure that this wave of
growth is indeed coming ?
The second issue is: do you see Brian, the broad restructuring that is also
taken place from the bottom up ? Yes, indeed, most of the p2p economy is
indeed subsumed to capitalism, but, there is a huge wave of bottom up
innovation, mobilisation and re-invention, on the scale of the labor
movement in the latter half of the 19th cy. If you see it (I do, as I
document it every day), how is this impacting your assessment of capitalist
strategies. I would question any analysis that is exclusively focused on
the internal dynamics of the capital class, and neglects the
counter-movements and counter-restructurings that are taking place.
Just for info, if Brian has not seen it, the Commons Transition Plan we
have crafted here in Ecuador, http://en.wiki.floksociety.org/w/Research_Plan,
with the ToC at bottom.
Though the actual effect of this plan will be limited in Ecuador, it is
significant that it has been commissioned, and that a global
commons-oriented movement of movements is emerging from which it is derived
and which is looking at it. Lots of the proposals I made a few years ago
(the commons-based reciprocity license, the alliance and chamber of the
commons, the global coalition of the commons), are now being taking
seriously and the subject of actual experimentation on the ground, along
with the thousands of other p2p/sharing/commons experimentations and
projects (I'm not talkng about the business sharing economy here). Nearly
every aspect of the bottom-up p2p economy (from urban gardening to
co-working to rural hackerspaces) is growing exponentially, along with its
capitalist similes .. (this is factually documented, I'm not just saying
this, though of course, it is easier for emergent phenomena to grow
exponentially).
So my second question is: how do the new social movements affect capitalist
scenarios ?
My hypothesis is: the next k-wave may well not be coming, and with a
perfect storm of really grave issues risking to coalesce say by 2030, we
may need an integrated alternative, much faster than we expect.

Bureaucratic labor unions are under assault throughout the world. Most
unions
have surrendered the achievements of the mid-twentieth century, when the
working
class was a militant force for change throughout the world. The decline of
labor unions has exposed workers throughout the world to capitalist
absolutism,
where trade unions are unable to defend workers’ interests.
As unions implode and weaken, workers are independently forming their own
unions, rooted in the tradition of syndicalism and autonomism—and unions
rooted in the tradition of self-directed action are auguring a new period
of class
struggle throughout the world. In Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe,
workers
are rejecting leaders and forming authentic class-struggle unions rooted in
sabotage, direct action, and striking to achieve concrete gains.
This is the first book to compile workers struggles on a global basis,
examining
the formation and expansion of radical unions in the Global South and Global
North. The tangible evidence marshaled in this book serves as a handbook
for understanding
the formidable obstacles and concrete opportunities for workers challenging
neoliberal capitalism, even as the unions of the old decline and disappear.
Contributors include Au Loong-Yu, Bai Ruixue, Arup K. Sen, Shawn Hattingh,
Piotr Bizyukov and Irina Olimpieva, Genese M. Sodikoff, Aviva Chomsky, Dario
Bursztyn, Gabriel Kuhn, Erik Forman, Steven Manicastri, and Jack
Kirkpatrick.
ABOUT THE EDITOR
Immanuel Ness is a political economist who specializes in labor unions and
professor of Political Science at City University of New York. He is editor
of
WorkingUSA: The Journal of Labor and Society and author of numerous works
including Guest Workers and Resistance to U.S. Corporate Despotism. He was a
worker and union organizer in the food, maintenance, and publishing
industries.
ABOUT STAUGHTON LYND
Staughton Lynd taught American history at Spelman College and Yale
University.
He was director of Freedom Schools in the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer.
An
early leader of the movement against the Vietnam War, he was blacklisted and
unable to continue as an academic. He then became a lawyer, and in this
capacity
has assisted rank-and-file workers and prisoners for the past thirty years.
He
has written, edited, or coedited with his wife Alice Lynd more than a dozen
books.
ACCOLADES
“As the U.S. labor movement conducts its latest, frantic search for ‘new
ideas,’
there is no better source of radical thinking on improved modes of union
functioning than the diverse contributors to this timely collection. New
Forms
of Worker Organization vividly describes what workers in Africa, Asia, South
America, and Europe have done to make their unions more effective. Let’s
hope that these compelling case studies of rank-and-file struggle and bottom
up change lead to more of the same where it’s needed the most, among those
of us ‘born in the USA!’”
—Steve Early, former organizer for the Communications Workers of America
and author of Save Our Union: Dispatches from a Movement in Distress

Dear Reject and Protect participants.
I hope this finds you all happy and well. Just want to make sure you saw
the video of the American Indian perspective of the XL Pipeline.

On another note, while taping in DC last month, I shared my screenplay "The
Journey Home."
It's a really cool and timely story about a Lakota Warrior who returns to
complete the circle of life in a world sickened by greed and degradation.
It's all told on the website. www.osmvoices.com
If you would stop by and visit - then share the link with family, friends
and colleagues I would be most grateful. We're trying to build a team!
So you are most welcome to walk with us!
Thanks for all you do.
Be well,
Mark

Hi all,
I call your attention to my critique of PPL and related project for
cooperatives, published in tripleC.

The Coming Revolution of Peer Production and Revolution- ary Cooperative. A
Response to Michel Bauwens, Vasilis Kostakis and Stefan Meretz
Jakob Rigi
Central European University; rigij(a)ceu.hu
Abstract: This article agrees with Meretz (2014) that the peer producing
cooperatives which are pro- posed by Bauwens & Kostakis (2014) will become
parts and parcels of the capitalist economy. Fur- ther, it argues that the
so called Peer Production Licenses (PPL), originally designed by Dmitry
Kleiner (2010), which is the basis of their proposal is a rent seeking
instrument. Contra Bauwens & Kostakis, it argues that, from the
perspectives of both reform and revolution, GPL is profoundly
anti-capitalist. The article critiques Meretz`s understanding of exchange
and reciprocity, on the one hand, and his under- estimation of GPL`s
communist aspect, on the other. On the positive side, the article,
explicating the communist nature of GPL-oriented peer production,
speculates about the general contours of a socie- ty where peer production
is the dominant mode of production. The technological basis of this
society, the article suggests, will be digital copying and automation.
Spatially, it will be based on localities that transcend the current
division between the city and country, synthesising agriculture with
industrial, affective and symbolic production. The rise of a globally
unified revolutionary social struggle which adopts peer production as its
platform is indispensible for the transformation of capitalism into such a
society. A global network of revolutionary peer producing cooperatives
which break with market and reduce their relations to it to an absolutely
unavoidable necessary minimum can be a significant com- ponent of this
social struggle. The building of these revolutionary cooperatives requires
a massive exodus from the city to the country.

fair remark, indeed, I would say the PPL is just the first of a new type of
license; the PPL can be adapted, changed etc .. so the key is to focus on
the reciprocity requirements

essentially, capitalist exchange is based on supply and demand dynamics and
class power; reciprocity is based on ethical principles of fairness; the
community itself can determine what that means in a specific context,
see http://p2pfoundation.net/Reciprocity and the definition there:
*Balanced or Symmetrical reciprocity occurs when someone gives to someone
else, expecting a fair and tangible return at some undefined future date.
It is a very informal system of exchange. The expectation that the giver
will be repaid is based on trust and social consequences*
my FLOK colleague writes:
John Restakis (in ch. 6 of Humanizing the
Economy<http://p2pfoundation.net/Humanizing_the_Economy>
):
"Reciprocity is the social mechanism that makes associational life
possible. It is the foundation of social life. In its elements, reciprocity
is a system of voluntary exchange between individuals based on the
understanding that the giving of a favour by one will in future be
reciprocated either to the giver or to someone else. A simple example is
the loan of a lawn mower by one neighbour - call him Frank, to another –
say, Fred. Frank makes the loan on the assumption that at some later date
Fred will return the favour. If Fred does not, the basis of reciprocity
falls apart. No more loaning of the lawnmower to Fred. Moreover Fred’s
non-reciprocity, if it continues, becomes reputational. Others will stop
extending favours to Fred also. So willingness to reciprocate is a basic
signal of the sociability of an individual. Taken to an extreme, the
complete unwillingness of an individual to reciprocate is tantamount to
severing the bonds between themselves and other people. Reciprocity is thus
a social relation that contains within itself potent emotional and even
spiritual dimensions. These elements account for an entirely different set
of motivations within individuals than behaviour in the classical sense of
“maximizing one’s utility” as a consumer.
Reciprocity animates a vast range of economic activities that rest on the
sharing and reinforcement of attitudes and values that are interpersonal
and constitute essential bonds between the individual and the human
community. What is exchanged in reciprocal transactions are not merely
particular goods, services and favours, but more fundamentally the
expression of good will and the assurance that one is prepared to help
others. It is the foundation of trust. Consequently, the practice of
reciprocity has profound social ramifications and entails a clear moral
element. Reciprocity is a key for understanding how the institutions of
society work. But it is also an economic principle with wholly distinct
characteristics that embody social as opposed to merely commercial
attributes. When reciprocity finds economic expression in the exchange of
goods and services to people and communities it is the social economy that
results. Examples range from the provision of burial services through the
creation of friendly societies in the 1800s to the promotion of
neighborhood safety through organizations like Neighborhood Watch today.
Finally, reciprocity is egalitarian – it presupposes a direct relationship
of equality between the individuals involved. It is very different from
altruism where the giver may have no relation to the receiver and where
there is a clear asymmetry of power, as is the case with charity."

the difference is in who is doing the negotiating
in capitalism, between two firms based on their market power
in this case, by a community with ethical enterpreneurial coalition, based
on their values and need for fairness / reciprocity

i'm not laying words in your mouth, just pointing out the general passivity
of the oekonux view to the existing situation ... between the perfect
ideals and the existing situation, there is no path forward but waiting ..

nothing pure about what I propose, it's a pragmatic hack to improve the
present and create counter-economic accumulation for the commons, to create
livelihoods for commoners, and give power to the ethical economy; unless
you propose something different than the current situation of subsumption,
it's the only thing that can change it; the proposal combines
non-capitalist market dynamics, with commons dynamics, and with material
stigmergy on a non-capitalist and non-market basis. The PPL doesn't change
much for the capitalist, they negotiate IP and licenses everyday, but it
changes a lot for the ethical economy and the commons, since it creates
autonomous livelihoods and relatively independent cooperative coalitions

The PPL combined with the cooperative coalition creates the condition for
material coordination, something not possible with the GPL alone, which
only creates immaterial coordination ..

agreed, and in fact, you seem to agree with me to say that non-total
markets are different from total-market-capitalism, that is the essential
point
>
> I don't mind the idea of post-capitalist, non-total markets, but I'm more

and this is essentially what my proposal addresses, pragmatically : 1) it
reinforces the commons 2) create autonomous livelihoods for commoners which
they don't have now 3) moves markets outside of capitalism 4) creates a new
sphere of material coordination outside of markets and planning ..
what the scheme does is exactly what you want, it eliminates the
totalitarianism of the current market form,
again, it's not the only thing that is necessary, it's part of integrative
approach
for a vision of how the different pieces may fit together,

Subject: Correction: New Article by Bill McKibben in Rolling Stone
To: Bauwens Michel <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com>
Friends,
We just sent you the wrong email by mistake.
The email from Bill McKibben that was recently sent out about his new *Rolling
Stone* article was meant to only go to people in the United States. Sorry
about that! Our apologies for any confusion.
But it might be a good mistake -- wherever you are in the world, Bill's new
article is a crucial piece of reading at a unique moment in history.
You can (and should) read it here:
act.350.org/signup/readytomarch<http://act.350.org/signup/readytomarch?t=1&akid=4632.360134.I7xFQW>
In the coming weeks and months, we'll be working with all of you to plan
bold climate action -- action we'll take in solidarity with our friends in
New York who are marching this September. Look for an email about that very
soon!
Thanks for your understanding, and for being part of this big, beautiful
movement.
Onward,
Charlie

Here is a link to Bill McKibben writing in Rolling Stone, calling people to
join what he is sure will be the largest climate march in history in New
York City on the weekend of 20/21 September.
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/a-call-to-arms-an-invitation-to-d…
Among the eloquent things Bill says is:
"Sometimes in the past, trade unionists have fought against
environmentalists – but unions in health care, mass transit, higher
education, domestic work and building services are all beginning to
organize for September, fully aware that there are no jobs on a dead
planet. Energy-sector unions see the jobs potential in massive solar
installation and a "just transition" off fossil fuels. Here's a banner I
know you'll see in the streets of New York: CLIMATE/JOBS. TWO CRISES, ONE
SOLUTION."
The International TUC has also just launched a global Unions 4 Climate
campaign. They start with three slogans:
Building Workers Power
There are no jobs on a dead planet
Climate Action = Jobs Growth.

Dear Friends,
Earlier this spring the chaplain at Harvard joined students sitting-in
outside the Harvard president’s office to demand climate action. He took
the bullhorn for a minute, and thanked the organizers for “giving me the
chance to be the person who I purport to be—a person who gives a damn.”
We’re all going to get that chance Sept. 20 and 21, *when the biggest
demonstration in the history of the climate movement takes place in New
York City.* We need you there, *you and everyone you can think of to
bring.* Here’s
the somewhat more formal
invitation<http://act.350.org/signup/readytomarch?t=1&akid=4629.360134.FYUJwo>that
I wrote out, for the current issue of Rolling Stone. Please
share it<http://act.350.org/signup/readytomarch?t=2&akid=4629.360134.FYUJwo>—it’s
the most important call we’ll send you this year. And if you're ready to
say you'll be there, RSVP on Facebook
here.<http://act.350.org/go/5246?t=3&akid=4629.360134.FYUJwo>
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has summoned the world’s leaders to the
city in late September to consult about climate change. Because we think
those leaders have done a lousy job, and because we’re tired of fancy words
and ready for real action, we’re going to go to New York too, in our
thousands and tens of thousands.
Marching doesn’t solve anything by itself. But movements can shift
political power—in fact, little else ever does.
*We need to show just how big and unified our movement has grown*, from the
environmental justice advocates fighting fossil fuel pollution in our
communities to the students demanding divestment on our campuses, from the
scientists who have seen their warnings so far ignored to the clergy now
showing real moral leadership.
If you’re wondering how to react to the devastating news that the Antarctic
is melting out of control: New York. If you’re scared like I am by the
pictures of the fire and drought across the West: New York. If you’re
feeling like it’s time to change the trajectory of this planet: we’ll see
you in New York.
*Sept. 20/21. Tell everyone.
