Graham Murdock: Public Service Media in Challenging Times: Connectivity, Climate and Corona. Online-talk, Feb 15

Public Service Media in Challenging Times: Connectivity, Climate and Corona. A talk by Graham Murdock hosted and organised by InnoPSM: AHRC Research Network on Innovation in Public Service Media Policies (https://innopsm.net/) and its event- and work-stream on Envisioning Public Service Media Utopias Date: Monday, 15 February 2021 Time: 16:00-18:00 (British Time) Where? Zoom (you will receive a Zoom link plus access data at latest one day before the event per e-mail) Registration via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/public-service-media-in-challenging-times-co… In this talk, Prof Graham Murdock will analyse public service media in the challenging times we live in. The institutions and animating ideals of public service broadcasting have been under continuous pressure for the last four decades. Advocates of marketisation have argued long and hard that they are no longer relevant or needed in a world of digital abundance and infinite choice, pointing to the increasing migration of young people to on-line platforms. These arguments continue to gain traction. A new proposal for an alternative future must place relations between broadcasting and the internet at the centre of argument. Discussions around how these relations might be organised has been underway for some time but recent developments have invested them with new relevance and urgency. 2020 was marked by a global pandemic, an accelerating climate crisis, and an explosion of direct action across the political spectrum. The processes driving these events are still unfolding presenting Public Service Media with both new challenges and new opportunities. The talk will open a conversation of how we might respond. About our speaker: Graham Murdock is Emeritus Professor of Culture and Economy at Loughborough University. He has written extensively on the political economy of broadcasting, the idea of a digital commons, and on the politics of risk, most recently in relation to the climate emergency. He has held visiting professorships at the Universities of Auckland, California at San Diego, Mexico City, Curtin, Bergen, the Free University of Brussels, and Stockholm and taught widely across China. His work has been translated into 21 languages. Respondents: Alessandro d’Arma, University of Westminster; Minna Aslama Horowitz, University of Helsinki; Klaus Unterberger, Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF) Public Value; Christian Fuchs, University of Westminster

a contribution on migration and living together in the european context
by Michel Bauwens 19 Jan '21

from my friend dyab abou jajah "We should express to the native Europeans that what we often tell each other secretly. And no, it is not that we are conspiring to take over as a community, or that we want to replace the native Europeans. It is the opposite. We tell each other that we hope that Europe will remain Europe. That it will not decay due to bad management of its politicians. That it will not lose its character. That it will not compromise on its values. Our fellow citizens who belong to the native community must know, that even though we will never accept discrimination or racism, and that we will always stand up for our rights as equal citizens and as human beings, whenever it comes to defending their identity, culture and heritage, they will always find us on their side. Whenever extremists from our midst, because of a religious ideology, or another ideology, shall turn against Europe and its natives, we will stand in their way, and we will defend Europe and its culture and identity. This is the time for a new historical deal, that will allow us to create a more solid community of citizens. Within that deal, we will hear the native claim, and we will acknowledge it as justified and legitimate. And even though I do not believe that ethnic Europeans will ever be a minority in Europe, our pledge should be to preserve European heritage and identity and languages under any circumstances. But also, and together with the native Europeans, we must defend the rule of law, democracy and human rights. There is no contradiction between these two platforms, they are complementary. Turning them against each other like the extremists on both sides do nowadays is destructive for everything that Europe represents. European identity and culture and its democracy, open society and human rights are so connected that they will fall together or triumph together. Let us make sure that they triumph together for the sake of all of us." https://www.aboujahjah.org/articles--columns/towards-a-new-deal-on-acceptin… -- P2P Foundation: http://wiki.p2pfoundation.net <http://p2pfoundation.net> - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: ; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Curation of news on p2p/commons developments: https://www.facebook.com/groups/p2p.open/

New report about mutualizing urban commons, thanks for spreading if possible
by Michel Bauwens 19 Jan '21

19 Jan '21

if possible, thanks for spreading this in your networks and social media! fyi: a new report on urban commons and public-commons cooperation protocols: "So imagine this: faced with weakening nation-states that are unable to solve planetary emergencies and their local effects, city-based commons movements ally themselves to instantiate new global infrastructural projects to mutualise provisioning systems; then imagine, the nation-state follows their example by instituting commons-supporting initiatives that align states with these cosmo-local flows. After a period of chaos following the often ecologically self-destructive policy options of the populist right, I imagine there will be a growing clamour for transnational institutions to act as global solutions networks aimed at tackling the growing planetary emergencies. It is to be noted, finally, that many movements dealing with the climate, such as the climate strike movement, or extinction rebellion, but also many reconstructive movements such as transition towns or the permaculture movement, are now coordinated at the global scale." Culture changes in hundreds (thousands) of academy organizations will need to be contemplated, discussed, argued, and implemented. But how do you, as a working scientist, become an open science culture change agent? Where do you start? What do you need to know? You already know that culture can work against your interests, and against the interests of scientific work (perverse incentives, etc.). How can you make culture work to nourish the new, transparent, open, generous, abundant, and kind outcomes that are the promise of open science.? Take a look at the Open Science Handbook <https://ronininstitute.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7cddd7963b0caa5a9…>. It’s a reference work you can use to become an open science change agent in your department, laboratory, college, learned society, or research agency. The next step is to work together to build “play books” that capture the actual culture change experiments from organizations around the globe. I’m looking for culture change agents who want to create collective intelligence around the work of culture change for open science! *Fun fact from Bruce: * My database for this book has 3500 items with 24 million words. *The announcement for this seminar can be found here <https://ronininstitute.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7cddd7963b0caa5a9…>. * Questions about the seminar? This means you'll be able to read our upcoming articles for free and access many of our back issues on JSTOR <https://plutojournals.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=946484bd874ae7f80b…>. Below you'll find more details about how we flipped the Journal open access. Read our latest issue here <https://plutojournals.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=946484bd874ae7f80b…> *Our move to Open Access* The Journal's publisher, Pluto Journals <https://plutojournals.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=946484bd874ae7f80b…>, successfully reached the goal to flip its complete journal portfolio of 21 titles to Open Access from 2021 onwards. The project “Pluto Open Journals” was realised in partnership with Knowledge Unlatched <https://plutojournals.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=946484bd874ae7f80b…>, and supported by the conceivers of the ground-breaking Subscribe-to-Open (S2O) model Libraria <https://plutojournals.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=946484bd874ae7f80b…>, a group of anthropologists and other social scientists committed to Open Access. Pluto Journals has asked those libraries and institutions currently subscribing to any of the journals to renew for 2021 on a S2O basis, thus contributing to making these journals completely free to readers and authors all over the world. This presents a great opportunity for the Journal and for authors submitting their research, such as in our upcoming call for papers here <https://plutojournals.us14.list-manage.com/track/click?u=946484bd874ae7f80b…>. You can now read our back issues from 2008 onwards online for free and our future issues will be Open Access. When we established the Journal in 2006, we aimed for it to be international, interdisciplinary, accessible to non-academics and to contribute to the development of a dialogue among scholars and policy makers about the future of work. We hope that the move to Open Access will help us continue to foster a reputation as a respected and widely cited source on the changing nature of work, Our sister organisation Pluto Books has an excellent website of books you might be interested in. Fwd: [CommonGood] "Beyond Digital Capitalism" - new book of Socialist Register; Interview with Editors - L. Panitch & G. Albo on "Capitalist contradictions & COVID-19 crisis"

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: tina ebro <cgebro(a)gmail.com> Date: Sun, Jan 3, 2021 at 1:40 AM Subject: [CommonGood] "Beyond Digital Capitalism" - new book of Socialist Register; Interview with Editors - L. Panitch & G. Albo on "Capitalist contradictions & COVID-19 crisis" To: 'Socialist Register' editors discuss capitalist contradictions and the COVID-19 crisis FacebookTwitterMore1 Following the publication of the *Socialist Register*'s 56th volume at the end of 2019, co-editors Leo Panitch and Greg Albo of York University reflect on their editorships of the journal and discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic is highlighting the contradictions in neoliberal capitalism. *Panitch*, professor emeritus of politics at York University, has been co-editing the *Socialist Register* <https://socialistregister.com/index.php/srv> for nearly 35 years. In a paper that appeared in the first volume he was responsible for, Panitch argued that there is nothing automatic about the development of socialist consciousness when the capitalist economy is not generating material benefits or job security for the working class. Leo Panitch Revisiting that theme, Panitch is adamant that it remains, unfortunately, objectively true today. Panitch believes that mainstream social democratic parties, unable to move beyond the welfare states they helped establish after the Second World War, have accommodated themselves to neoliberal global capitalism. “Part of the radical left’s critique of social democratic parties, which I agree with,” Panitch explained, “is that the compromise with the existing capitalist system those parties tried to make has come undone. On the other hand, the expectation that crises in the system would produce new revolutionary workers has simply not been born out.” *Albo*, an associate professor in York University’s Department of Politics, considered similar themes when he took up co-editing the *Socialist Register* in 2011 following the global financial crisis and recession. The preface of his first volume opened by stating that “crises have a way of clarifying things.” Now, as the world faces a new challenge – the COVID-19 pandemic – Albo again sees an opportunity for clarity. “I think there’s a certain clarity at the present moment of the problems of neoliberalism,” Albo explained. “Everybody is seeing, for example, the rundown conditions of our health care systems.” [image: Greg Albo] Greg Albo Albo envisions new mechanisms forming within states to address the crisis – ranging from emergency monetary policy and the socialization of wages to the way supply chains and health care systems are being re-thought – as important issues to monitor as this crisis, and the responses to it, unfolds. While, similar to Panitch, Albo doesn’t see crisis as an automatic catalyst for change, he is interested in the types of class alliances that could emerge following this world event, and what the global balance of power might look like on the other side. “After we see the wreckage that has been imposed, again, by neoliberalism, will the response be to push away from it?” he asked. The latest volume of the *Socialist Register*, the publication’s 56th, titled, *Beyond Market Dystopia: New Ways of Living <https://socialistregister.com/index.php/srv>*, captures several issues and themes related to the impact of states’ responses to the COVID-19 outbreak despite being published prior to the virus being declared a pandemic. “The volume hit this moment very well, although the authors of the essays were obviously not writing about this moment directly,” Albo said. Although Panitch and Albo asked contributors to consider dystopia, they don’t see the volume as necessarily pessimistic. [image: "Beyond Market Dystopia: New Ways of Living"] *Beyond Market Dystopia: New Ways of Living* Panitch described the theme of “new ways of living” as “an attempt to get us to think about the terrible new ways in which we’re living, and the consequences of market dystopia – as seen in the appalling lack of preparation of our health care system – but also to encourage people to be visionary.” For Panitch, looking at new ways of living means encouraging the *Register’s* authors and audience to retain a positive vision of the future. In a paper he co-authored with former York Professor and Visiting Packer Chair in Social Justice *Sam Gindin* and York PhD graduate *Stephen Maher*, Panitch explores both the promises and limitations of contemporary progressive political campaigns such as those for Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Jeremy Corbyn. Oxford University Professor *Barbara Harriss-White* examines climate change and the ecological crisis and considers how to make the world a better place through restitution and restoration. Authors contributed pieces looking at refugees and global migration, social reproduction, the economy in the home, the corporatization of health care and education systems and a variety of other topics related to neoliberalism is fostering market economies in all parts of society. *Roger Keil*, a professor at York University, wrote a paper titled “Communism in the Suburbs?” which looks at attempts throughout the past century to develop “utopian communities” in Los Angeles through measures such as more egalitarian housing policies. The volume concludes with a paper by renowned critical theorist, feminist and philosopher *Nancy Fraser*, asking, “What should socialism mean in the twenty-first century?” Panitch is pleased to see York University well represented in the *Register’s *56th volume, reflecting on a “steady stream of York contributors” he has been thankful for since he and Albo began editing the journal. “I’m very proud of the place York always occupies,” Panitch said, “and I’m very thankful to York for the kind of support it has always provided to my editorship of the *Register*.” Looking back at his tenure as one of the journal’s editors, Panitch is also proud of the places the *Socialist Register* has come to occupy both in academia and amongst left intellectuals. “It was always resolutely international, and it still is,” Panitch said. “Someone once said to me, ‘if you want to be read in Alexandria, Egypt, publish in the *Register*, and if you want to be read in Cambridge, Massachusetts, don’t.’” Panitch recalled how founding editor Ralph Miliband told him, “the *Register* needs to be hard to read and hard to write for,” in the sense of being intellectually challenging yet always very clearly written. Nearly all of the journal’s essays are commissioned, with hardly anyone ever declining to write for the publication when asked. [image: "Searching for Socialism: The Project of the Labour New Left from Benn to Corbyn"] *Searching for Socialism: The Project of the Labour New Left from Benn to Corbyn* *Beyond Market Dystopia* is the first of two volumes based on the theme of new ways of living. Panitch and Albo are already working on a companion edition, *Beyond Digital Capitalism*, to be published in fall 2020. Albo, who coordinates the Toronto Socialist Project’s <https://socialistproject.ca/> daily e-magazine, *The Bullet* <https://socialistproject.ca/bullet/>, and supports the work of the Centre for Social Justice <https://www.socialjustice.org/>, is finding more time for writing – and editing the work of others who have more time for writing – while in isolation. Panitch, whose formal role at York as a retired senior scholar mainly sees him giving talks and wrapping up a handful of remaining PhD supervisions, is looking forward to the upcoming launch of his new book, *Searching for Socialism: The Project of the Labour New Left from Benn to Corbyn* <https://www.penguinrandomhouse.ca/books/635952/searching-for-socialism-by-l…> *, *co-authored with *Colin Leyes*, which will likely take place in a virtual format later this month. “Maybe we’ll call it ‘Zooming for Socialism,’” Panitch joked. *Do you have a story to share about how you are coping, or what you are doing differently, during the COVID-19 pandemic? The initial decision to leave, made in the special referendum back in June 2016, has taken over four tortuous years to implement. So what does the deal mean for British capital and labour? For British manufacturers, the tariff-free regime of the EU’s internal market has been maintained. But the British government will have to renegotiate new bilateral treaties with governments across the world, whereas previously they were included within EU deals. People will no longer be able to work freely in both economies by right, all goods will require significant additional paperwork to cross borders and some will be checked extensively to verify they comply with local regulatory standards. Frictionless trade is over; indeed, that's even between Northern Ireland and mainland Britain with a new customs border across the Irish Sea. And that’s just goods trade, where the EU is the destination of 57% of British industrial goods. The British government fought tooth and nail to protect the fishing industry (and failed), but it contributes only 0.04% of UK GDP, while the services sector contributes over 70%. Of course, most of this is not exported, but still services exports contribute 30% to UK GDP. And 40% of that services trade is with the EU directly. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> Indeed, while the UK runs a huge goods trade deficit with the EU, that is in part compensated by running a surplus in services trade with the EU. This surplus is in mainly financial and professional services where the City of London leads. Exports of UK financial services are worth £60 billion annually compared to imports of £15 billion. And 43% of financial services exports go to the EU. The Brexit deal with the EU has done nothing for this sector. Professional services providers will lose their ability automatically to work in the EU after the Brexit deal failed to obtain pan-EU mutual recognition of professional qualifications. This means that professions from doctors and vets to engineers and architects must have their qualifications recognised in each EU member state where they want to work. And the deal does not cover financial services access to EU markets, which is still to be determined by a separate process under which the EU will either unilaterally grant “equivalence” to the UK and its regulated companies or leave firms to seek permissions from individual member states. Over the next year, there may well be bit by bit agreements on trade in these areas. But the UK service sector is bound to end up worse off for its exports than was the case within the EU. And that’s serious because the UK is a ‘rentier’ economy that depends heavily on its financial and business services sector <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…>. Financial services contribute 7% of UK GDP, some 40% higher a contribution than in Germany, France or Japan. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> The UK is a country of bankers, lawyers, accountants and media people, rather than engineers, builders and manufacturers. The UK has a huge top-heavy banking sector, but a small manufacturing sector compared to other G7 economies. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> What about the impact on working people? On leaving the EU, what little British labour has gained from EU regulations will be in jeopardy within a country which is already the most deregulated in the OECD. The EU rules included a 48-hour week maximum (riddled with exemptions); health and safety regulations; regional and social subsidies; science funding; environmental checks; and of course, above all, free movement of labour. All that is going or being minimised. Around 3.7% of the total EU workforce – 3 million people – now work in a member state other than their own. Since 1987, over 3.3 million students and 470,000 teaching staff have taken part in the EU’s Erasmus programme. That programme will exclude Britons from now on. Immigration into the UK from EU countries has been significant; but it also works the other way; with many Brits working and living in continental Europe. With the UK out of the EU, Britons will be subject to work visas and other costs that will be greater than the total money per person saved from contributions to the EU. On balance, EU immigrants (indeed all immigrants) have contributed more to the UK economy in taxes (income and VAT), in filling low-paid jobs (hospitals, hotels, restaurants, farming, transport) than they have taken up (in extra cost of schools, public services etc). That’s because most are young (often single) and help pay pension contributions for those Brits who are retired. The Brexit referendum has already brought about a sharp drop in net immigration into the UK from the EU, down 50-100,000 and still falling. That can only add to the loss of national income and tax revenues down the road. Most sober estimates of the impact of leaving the EU suggest that the UK economy will grow more slowly in real terms than it would have done if it had remained a member. Mainstream economic institutes, including the Bank of England, reckon that there would be a cumulative loss in real GDP for the UK over the next ten to 15 years of between 4-10% of GDP from leaving the EU; or about 0.4% points off annual GDP growth. That’s a cumulative 3% of GDP loss per person, equivalent to about £1000 per person per year. The UK’s Office for Budget Responsibility reckons that one third of this relative loss has already taken place because of the reduction in the pace of business investment since the referendum as domestic businesses stopped investing much, due to uncertainty about the Brexit deal along with a sharp drop in foreign inward investment. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> And then of course, the COVID pandemic has decimated business activity. In 2020., the UK will suffer the largest fall in GDP among major economies apart from Spain and recover more slowly than others in 2021. British capitalism was already slipping badly before the pandemic hit. Its trade deficit with the rest of the world had widened to around 6% of GDP; and real GDP growth had slid back from over 2% a year to below 1.5%, with industrial production crawling along at 1%. The UK economy already had weak investment and productivity <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> growth compared with the 1990s and with other OECD countries <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> . <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> Investment in technology and R&D has been poor, more than one-third less than the OECD average. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> And the reason for this is clear. The average profitability of British capital has been falling. Even before the pandemic hit in 2020, average profitability (according to official statistics) was 30% below the level of the late 1990s and, excluding the Great Recession, was at an all-time low. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> Since the referendum of 2016, UK profitability has fallen by nearly 9%, compared to small rises in the Eurozone and the US. And the Eurozone AMECO forecast for profitability will leave the UK 18% below 2015 levels by 2022! <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> As a result, investment by British capital is set to plunge and is forecast to be down a staggering 60% by 2022 compared to the referendum year of 2016. <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> But maybe the UK can confound these dismal forecasts, as the government claims, because UK industry and the City of London can now expand across the world 'free from the shackles' of EU regulation. And it is increasingly clear how it thinks it can do this – by turning Britain into a tax and regulation-free base for foreign multinationals. The government is planning ‘free ports’ or zones; areas with little to no tax in order to encourage economic activity. While located geographically within a country, they essentially exist outside its borders for tax purposes. Companies operating within free ports can benefit from deferring the payment of taxes until their products are moved elsewhere or can avoid them altogether if they bring in goods to store or manufacture on site before exporting them again. Unfortunately, for the government, studies show <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.susse…> that free ports might simply defer the point when taxes are paid, as imports would still need to reach final customers across the country. And the incentives may also promote the relocation of activity that would have taken place anyway, from one part of the UK to another. Moreover, tax breaks could mean a loss of revenue for the Treasury. And free ports risk facilitating money laundering and tax evasion, as goods are usually not subject to checks that are standard elsewhere. A deregulated Britain will not restore economic growth, let alone good, well-paid jobs for an educated and skilled workforce. It will only boost the profits of multi-nationals, using cheap, unskilled labour. In sum, the Brexit deal is another obstacle to sustained economic growth for Britain. But the COVID pandemic slump and the underlying weakness of British capital are much more damaging to the UK's economic future than Brexit. Brexit is just an extra burden for British capital to face; as it also will be for British households. *michael roberts <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…>* | December 29, 2020 at 5:42 pm | Categories: capitalism <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…>, economics <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…>, Profitability <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> | URL: https://wp.me/pLequ-4Jf <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.me%2F…> Comment <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> See all comments <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> Like <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> Unsubscribe <https://emea01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpublic-a…> to no longer receive posts from Michael Roberts Blog. Fwd: [r3.0 Newsletter] RIP Steering Board Member Brendan LeBlanc / Multicapitalism White Paper Released

28 Dec '20

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: r3.0 <hello(a)r3-0.org> Date: Tue, Dec 22, 2020 at 7:58 PM Subject: [r3.0 Newsletter] RIP Steering Board Member Brendan LeBlanc / Multicapitalism White Paper Released To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> View this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/r3-0/endoftheyear2020-2?e=e9fc303c86> <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> *Dear Michel, * Just when we thought 2020 couldn't take anything more from us, we get news that it has shuffled off the mortal coil of our beloved Steering Board Member Brendan LeBlanc. Our sadness is compounded by the intense irony that he passed away only a week before we now release our first White Paper, *From Monocapitalism to Multicapitalism: 21st Century System Value Creation, *which he played an instrumental role in seeding. We consider this White Paper a gift to Brendan's memory, and a holiday gift to you, our community. This season also invites reflections on the year past and the year to come, so we bring you our latest Medium article, which reviews 2020 and previews 2021. Since the last newsletter earlier this month, we kicked off the Thresholds of Transformation Project to pilot test the UNRISD Sustainable Development Performance Indicators, and we have a few final slots remaining for this Project before the training in early January. Our ecosystem of Partners have been very active in recent weeks, so this newsletter documents r3.0-related activity by Academic Alliance Member Delphine Gibassier and Advocation Partners Daniel Christian Wahl and Mark McElroy. Finally, we add one new Steering Board Member and one new Advocation Partner. Now, the bullets: - *RIP Steering Board Member Brendan LeBlanc * - *Multicapitalism White Paper Released * - *r3.0 2020 Reveiw / 2021 Preview * - *UNRISD Thresholds of Transformation Pilot Project Kickoff * - *Partner News * - *New Steering Board Member & Advocation Partner* We wish you all a relaxing, connective, and safe holiday season! *The r3.0 Operations Team* *Alexandra, Bill, Cleophea, Peter & Ralph* RIP Steering Board Member Brendan LeBlanc <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> As you can see from these pictures with Bill & Ralph, Brendan was a consummate joker whose humor slyly invited us to laugh at our humanity -- both our shortcomings and our potential. Here's how we memorialized Brendan in the dedication to the *Multicapitalism*White Paper: *Dedicated to Brendan LeBlanc, who passed away unexpectedly just before this White Paper was released. Brendan was a close friend and colleague who we remember for his keen intelligence and wicked good sense of humor. As a r3.0 Steering Board Member, he championed this White Paper in particular (you wouldn’t have it in your hands now without Brendan’s tireless advocacy) and the work of r3.0 more broadly — particularly our work on Sustainability Context and the Carrying Capacities of the Capitals. Brendan’s fingerprints are all over the famous Paragraph 58 in the International Integrated Reporting Council’s Background Paper on Value Creation <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…>, which integrates carrying capacity and thresholds & allocations prominently, and we remember him for his most memorable quote: “The only thing more dangerous than no progress is the illusion of progress.” <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> But ultimately, we remember Brendan for the deep belly laughter he inspired every time we were together. The world is a much better place for his having been here.* Multicapitalism White Paper Released <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> "It's been a long time coming," writes Bill in the Author's Foreword (quoting David Crosby <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…>) about this, our first White Paper: *From Monocapitalism to Multicapitalism: 21st Century System Value Creation*. More than three years, to be precise. But we think it's worth the wait -- and hope you agree! The project started as a partnership with the International Integrated Reporting Council; when we delivered the final draft, they considered it an "important and provocative paper." *So provocative*, in fact, that IIRC recognized they would need to request significant changes to be able to publish it under their name, and they showed respect by refraining from asking us to dilute the message to satisfy their more conservative base, and instead invited us to publish it solo <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> . We believe this is an integral part of the story of this paper: Multicapitalism, the concept conceived by our Advocation Partner Mark McElroy (and his partner Martin Thomas) predicated on the fact that the multiple capitals all have carrying capacities, is an inherently provocative notion that challenges the core underpinnings of status quo Monocapitalism, with its commitment to shareholder primacy, perpetual growth, and privatization of value. We believe that if political expedience requires us to disregard the carrying capacities of the capitals, then we must reject this "political world" (to quote Bob Dylan <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…>, as the White Paper does), and instead embrace the "material world" (more like George Harrison's <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> than Madonna's <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…>) that reconciles thermodynamic realities with ethical imperatives -- as this Multicapitalism White Paper does. Unfortunately, it took Covid-19, with its "flatten the curve" meme (that embeds the dotted line of healthcare system capacity), to finally drive the point home. UNRISD Thresholds of Transformation Pilot Project Kickoff <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> Last week, we launched the “Thresholds of Transformation” project <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> for pilot testing the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development’s Sustainable Development Performance Indicators (see here <https://r3-0.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=749af2e0ab2f54ee18b2482c5&i…> for our article on the project). More the 40 partners joined us from over 20 organizations in our Kickoff Meeting for piloting the Three Tiered set of Indicators (Tier One = Incrementalist; Tier Two = Contextualized / Thresholds-Based; Tier Three = Transformational). There are still a few slots open in the project, for which the training starts in early January, so please reach out to Bill <[email protected]?subject=Request%20to%20Join%20Thresholds%20of%20Transformation%20> and/or Ralph <[email protected]?subject=Request%20to%20Join%20Thresholds%20of%20Transformation%20> if you wish to reserve a seat at the table.
