Preface, introduction, sample chapter, and more infos here: https://fuchsc.uti.at/social-media-a-critical-introduction-third-edition/ Social media are an integral part of contemporary society. From news and politics to language and everyday life, they have changed the way we communicate, use information and understand the world. So we have to ask critical questions about social media. We have to dig deeper into issues of ownership, power, class and (in)justice. This book equips you with a critical understanding of the complexities and contradictions at the heart of social media’s relationship with society. The revised and expanded Third Edition: * Explores populism, racism and nationalism in a new chapter on right-wing authoritarianism. * Introduces the phenomenon of social media influencers in the age of Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat. * Explains how big data is central to social media in a new chapter on big data capitalism and imperialism. * Explores the growing prominence of platforms and platform capitalism. * Challenges you to envision and achieve a truly social media that serves the purposes of a just and fair world. * Analyses fake news and misinformation in the context of Facebook and Cambridge Analytica. He wrote this to me: *Hi Daniel really enjoyed your latest newsletter on Tulum. Do you mind me asking though? How do you see yourself in the world you describe, since living in Tulum yourself is just also accepting that system and being a full participant of it? I agree with most of your points in your text, just to be clear. Not trying to criticize or make you uncomfortable. I just also see that you live and benefit from exactly what you are criticizing or showing the issues of by precisely living there yourself?* I appreciate this question. My answer has a few different levels to it. The short answer is that I wish I knew what to do now that would be truly helpful. I realize that bringing awareness may seem futile, but, as I have found, it can start a process that eventually leads to tangible change. As for living in Tulum, I have to live somewhere! Tulum seems a good place for me to be right now as many amazing people pass through here and a new culture is developing here that can be inflected, influenced and perhaps shifted. The fact that Tulum’s culture is theoretically focused on “consciousness” makes the unconsciousness, selfishness, and hypocrisy more glaringly obvious than in Cancun, say, or New York. Before I wrote my first book, *Breaking Open the Head* (2002), you couldn't speak seriously about psychedelics / visionary plants in mainstream society without being ridiculed. Today, we are in a psychedelic renaissance. For better or worse, massive industries are forming around them and everybody has changed their minds about them. That book contributed to a change of perception which is now leading to significant social change. As I wrote in my piece, Tulum is a perfect microcosm of the macrocosm. For instance, let’s look at the situation in the Amazon, which is similar. We are pushing the Amazon to the brink. Scientists now worry that the huge Amazon rainforest may collapse as a functional ecosystem within five to fifteen years. According to a recent study, the Amazon now produces more CO2 than it sequesters. Since the Amazon rainforest is the hydrological heart of the planet, this should concern all of us and motivate us to take action. Share <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxdktGSmyAUhp8m3iWDIAQvvNg2mzaZjel2t832yk…> The same underlying pressures that are ruining the Yucatan are also devastating the Amazon. Essentially, the logic of our economic system forces the need for incessant growth and development, beyond the limits of what the Earth can support. (Useful books to understand this are *The Case Against the Global Economy*, edited by Jerry Mander, and *Oneness Versus the 1%* by Vandana Shiva). We are either going to find a way to change this or our children will inherit a dystopian inferno with drastically reduced possibilities and curtailed lives. I have been reading Bill Gates’ new book, *How to Avoid a Climate Disaster*, on climate change. Typically, he doesn’t focus on reducing the massive amounts of CO2 we release, which requires changing the lifestyles of the wealthy, first of all. The top 1% use an estimated 20% of our collective resources. Instead, Gates is funding experiments in “global dimming,” where we pour sulfur particles into the atmosphere to reduce sunlight. This is obviously not a holistic solution and could cause new disasters. But for those trapped in the logic of Capitalism and endless growth, they have no choice but to believe we can continue this current system indefinitely. What seems clear is that piecemeal efforts of philanthropy and charity cannot address the underlying forces driving us toward catastrophe. What we need is systemic change. We must redesign the operating system for our civilization — our economic system above all. In my 2017 book *How Soon Is Now*, I explored some ways this could be done. I know it seems difficult, if not impossible, to accomplish this. On the other hand, many things that once seemed impossible have come to pass. We don’t know what we are capable of until we try. How can we bring about systemic change? We need to establish, first of all, shared awareness and a collective agreement about what must be done. Such a shared awareness naturally begins with a small group, a minority, who then transmit it to larger circles of the population (as happened with psychedelics). We need to build the movements, media, institutions and tools to drive such a transition. Luckily, we have many prototypes for how this can be accomplished from initiatives and innovations from the past. Let’s take the Amazon as an example. Millions of people live in the Amazon basin and many of them are doing work that further exploits and deforests the rainforest. They don’t do this because they want to, but because they have no choice. One of the main drivers of destruction is that large tracts of the jungle are being converted to soybean plantations for cattle, to satisfy a growing demand for meat in countries like China and India. You can’t solve the situation in the Amazon without providing a different way for those millions of people to make decent livelihoods. Their work has to become labor that supports the health and biodiversity of the local ecosystem. This would require the use of different tools for exchanging and measuring value, along with a large-scale retraining program. We also need to find a way to reduce the world’s growing appetite for meat. While this is difficult to imagine, it is not actually impossible. Nothing physically prevents us from making these changes, only the logic of the economic system and the ideologies that prop it up. In considering the dynamics of systemic change, one theme that I keep exploring is the necessity for a new over-arching paradigm that transcends reductive materialism and mass consumerism. I believe this new paradigm already exists in nascent form, but it must be collectively recognized. We need more “propaganda” (myths, stories, songs) to transmit it to different sectors of the populace. One element of this new paradigm is the integration of science and mysticism, which also allows a place for traditional religious beliefs. Spirituality (and religion) impart dignity and purpose to people’s lives. They point us toward a greater goal that we can unify to achieve, as leaders like Gandhi and Martin Luther King demonstrated. <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVUkuO5CAMPU1ll4h_YMGiNVJfI-LjpJhKIAOku2…> We know that a group of smart, well-resourced people who decide to work together can change the world. The book *Dark Money* by Jane Mayer gives one example. Mayer documents how the Koch brothers used their wealth and power to change the direction of American society over a half century. The Kochs hated the increased taxation, increased social services, decent public education and movements for civil rights and the environment that were the legacy of the 1960s. They wanted to reduce taxes on the wealthy, cut social services, and evade ecological restrictions. They realized they needed a long-term master plan to do this. So they developed one. As part of their strategy, they established media outlets, started think tanks, bought academic departments at universities, and created “Astro-turf”’d social movements like the Tea Party, copying progressive grassroots initiatives. They successfully rolled back decades of progress. The “other side” — those seeking a systemic alternative to reduce wealth inequality, reverse the extractive model of Colonialism, and protect our threatened planet — can study what the Koch brothers did and copy it. In fact, such a counter-initiative might develop quickly. After all, it has reason and justice on its side. To quote Shiva: “We can, through our creativity and imagination, through our solidarity and interconnectedness, create a planetary freedom movement through which we break free of the chains and walls constructed by the illusions of the mechanical mind, the money machine and the delusion of democracy. We can reclaim and create real knowledge through real intelligence. We can reclaim and create real wealth with nature, through our creativity. We can sow the seeds of real freedom and earth democracy.” I actually don’t know if we can do this — but it seems at least worth a shot. Among the people I know, many have decided that it is already too late; “the machine is unstoppable;” our civilization is going to collapse no matter what we do, so there is no reason to try to find or build scale-able solutions. In any case, it will require a succession of horrific disasters before the masses start to “wake up.” Some choose to focus on self-healing, personal spiritual growth, building off-the-grid communities with a small group of friends, or they apprentice with indigenous people and see the spiritual wisdom of the indigenous as an Absolute Good compared to the Absolute Bad of the Capitalist technocracy. While I sympathize with this perspective, I find it misguided and self-serving. It is another way to abdicate and avoid taking responsibility. The problem with focusing on healing yourself is that there is no end to it. We remain imperfect beings in mortal, imperfect bodies. There will always be more to heal. On the other hand, a degree of self-healing — from our education system, from a culture based on competition and exploitation, and from personal trauma — is necessary, so it requires balance. In retrospect, I realized that I rushed into trying to "save the world" before I had done enough healing work on myself. This led to negative consequences and hard lessons I had to learn. We will definitely see intensifying disasters in the coming years. But those disasters won’t lead to positive social change unless we are prepared with functional alternatives to the current system. We still have time to develop and disseminate such alternatives — but we don’t know how much time is available. In our culture, we are trained to continually seek for the next thrill, the next escape. We do this by moving to exotic places like Tulum and Bali, or by adopting spiritual practices from other cultures as a badge of identity. This inevitably continues the logic of Colonialism, which is based on a model of exploit-and-escape. As beneficiaries of the Western system, it might be more honest for us to accept our culpability for this legacy of exploitation and seek to terminate it, rather than believing it is enough to seek inner peace while swaddled in native beads and fabrics. Indigenous traditions, indigenous medicine, and indigenous spirituality are beautiful and transformative. As Europeans and Americans, we can learn so much from them. But we do not belong to those cultures. We have a moral and spiritual responsibility to deal with our Wetiko culture, the one that has unleashed this planetary holocaust. Instead of seeing this as a horrible burden, we can approach it as a tremendous spiritual opportunity and adventure. Who is up for this challenge? We cannot change it without changing our thinking. Indeed, the VISIBLE Landscape outside is the “mirror” of the INVISIBLE Landscape of our “mental MAPS - perceptions, worldviews and stories which define “what is true”, good and possible. *What do we see outside? * *An Ego centric world of materialism, *focused on Efficiency, driven by *value capture, competition, growth, profit, productivity, power over, exclusion. * *This is **MAD land (leading to Massive Assured Destruction), *maintained by a series of “worldviews” such as the myth of progress, *making a career, *the* story of scarcity, the illusion of control and predictability.* Now look again and see the seeds and traces of a *radically different Future: an **ECO **centric world, *focused on resiliency, driven by systemic and regenerative value creation, organic collaboration, Power with, Inclusion. This is *NO MAD Land* *(leading to Mutually Assured Development), *sustained by radically different values and worldviews about Growth, Business, what it means to be Human and to live a meaningful Life. If we want to change the world, we need to change how we think and what we think We can see our voracious civilisation crashing down. So are the "old narratives", worldviews and myths which sustain it. This is the collapse of *MAD land *(leading to Massive Assured Destruction). *We need a Future we can believe in.* *A meaning making Story that *resonates with our deepest Aspirations and generates hope that a viable human Future is possible, in a *NO MAD Land* (based on Mutually Assisted Development). A Narrative able to generate the next appeal: a desire for the Future we want to create. This is the next big shift: from the Nostalgia of a Future forever gone to an "erotic" attraction towards a Future we want to create. So the Future we imagine can become the cause of our Present. Now is the time to dare to imagine it. To *make alternative narrative of the Future visible, desirable and actionable.* *"Be careful about the Present you create because it must look like the Future you dream of."* Rather than building the Future on Fear, Despair or Violence, Shapership stands for building it on Hope, Imagination and Radical Wisdom. It focuses on the need to boost Creative Thinking, Imagination and to create the Next Appeal. <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVUtuO2jAQ_RrytsiXXB_ywC4LDVqCaCm79CVy7A…> [image: Comment] <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVUluPojAU_jXypumFIn3gwehqNKuu4ziaeSGlPU…> [image: Share] <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVkl2PojAUhn-N3Gn6Qfm44MLoajSrruM4mrkhpT…> *If you liked this post from *Shapership. Fwd: European Community Land Trust Roundtable
by Michel Bauwens 10 Mar '21

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Schumacher Center for a New Economics < schumacher(a)centerforneweconomics.org> Date: Wed, Mar 10, 2021 at 5:10 AM Subject: European Community Land Trust Roundtable To: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> view this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/centerforneweconomics.org/clt-euro-roundtable?e=639a1166…> <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> *Scene of Findhorn Bay, Scotland. Photo courtesy of The Findhorn Village Conservation Company (TFVCC).* Dear Michel Bauwens, George Monbiot’s much heralded 40th Annual E. F. Schumacher Lecture, Private Sufficiency, Public Luxury: Land is the Key to the Transformation of Society, <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> continues to inspire new thinking about community land ownership. To explore the topic further, the Schumacher Center is holding a series of virtual Community Land Trust Roundtables. The recording of the first Roundtable, held on February 18th, with panelists Janelle Orsi, Tony Hernandez, Çaca Yvaire, and host Greg Watson may be viewed here <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> or below. The second Roundtable, highlighting UK and European practitioners, will be held Thursday, March 18th, at 11 AM EST (3 PM GMT) via Zoom. The three panelists are Tom Chance of the National Community Land Trust Network UK <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…>, Calum MacLeod of Community Land Scotland, <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> and Geert De Pauw of the Brussels Community Land Trust <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…>. This conversation will be moderated by Natasha Hulst, <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> European Land Commons Program Director at the Schumacher Center and co-founder of the Dutch community land trust Grond van Bestaan <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> . <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> Register for the CLT Roundtable <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> In Scotland, half of the country’s privately-owned land is held by just 432 owners. Responding to this concentration of ownership, Scotland passed a series of Acts (2003, 2015, & 2016) that give “representative community bodies” the right of first refusal to buy land should it come up for sale. In the case of land abandoned, neglected, or causing harm, Scottish ministers can compel a landowner to sell if they decide that the sale will further sustainable development in the area. *Good place-making can provide communities with an important cultural context; a sense of pride and belonging; and a sense of local and national identity. It can provide environments which function well; link well with surrounding settlements and provide attractive areas in which to socialise, to move around and to do business.* – Scottish Government, TFVCC website To assist community groups in exercising their options, a Scottish Land Fund of 15 million pounds was established from lottery proceeds. Community Land Scotland (CLS) was organized to support community groups taking the step to purchase land under the land reform acts. Much like a Community Land Trust <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…>, a qualifying organization represents a defined geographic area with membership open to everyone in the region. CLS’s infographic <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> outlines the steps needed to purchase community land. * We want to see more of Scotland’s land in the hands of more of Scotland’s people. * – Community Land Scotland's website Involving the local community is a strong component of a successful bid for land under the acts. The Findhorn Village Conservation Company <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> exercised its option to buy the residual Novar Estates land at the center of the village. The area contains a car park and garage site, meaning the village can now control conditions of their use, balancing residents' needs for much-needed income with those of the many tourists to the area. *Galson Estate Trust, Scotland. Photo courtesy of Galson Estate Trust.* The Galson Estate Trust <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> is a community-owned estate of 56,000 acres of coast, agricultural land and moor in the North West of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Trust land comprises 22 crofting villages with a population of nearly 2,000 people. The Trust completed purchase of the land in 2007 with a combination of funding from the Scottish Land Fund and private sources. Crofting is a common land tenure system in the Scottish Highlands. Individual crofters typically lease five to twelve acres of land for agricultural and residential purposes. Then “crofting villages” lease larger amounts of poorer land for common grazing. The crofting leases remained in effect with the transfer of land from private to community ownership. Now, in addition, the community decides on the future use of its land including the construction of renewable energy systems, new housing development, support of schools and libraries, and sporting site maintenance. The lesson is that well-constructed legislation and a small amount of government funding can leverage tremendous citizen engagement to move village lands from private ownership to community ownership and management, resulting in greater environmental protections, appropriate development, and continuity of culture. More examples from Scotland, England, Belgium, and the Netherlands will be shared at the March 18th Community Land Trust Roundtable. Register here. <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> Wishing All Well, Staff of the Schumacher Center <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> On February 18th, the Schumacher Center hosted a Community Land Trust Roundtable with Çaca Yvaire, Tony Hernandez, Janelle Orsi and moderator Greg Watson. new interview, thanks for diffusing in your networks

Petar Jandric has done an in-depth conversation with me about the current work at the P2P Foundation, which is focused mostly on the me of: how can we produce for human need within planetary boundaries, in the context of the rapid construction of post-westphalian cyber-physical infrastructure and autonomous trans-local ecosystems. https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s42438-021-00218-8 Excerpt: Commoning for Planetary Survival and Regeneration PJ: You recently published a report ‘P2P Accounting for Planetary Survival: Towards a P2P Infrastructure for a Socially-Just Circular Society’ (Bauwens and Pazaitis 2020). What is P2P accounting and how does it differ from traditional accounting? MB: In the 1930s, there was this big debate between socialists and liberals called the ‘Socialist Calculation Debate’. On the one side, were Friedrich Hayek, Joseph Schumpeter, Ludwig von Mises, and others, who argued that centralised planning could not work. On the opposite side, were Karl Polanyi, and others, who claimed that socialist planning could work (and in ways superior to capitalism). For almost one century it seemed that the leftists had lost the socialist calculation debate. These days, however, things are changing. There are three main levels of resource allocation. (1) We have the state, which represents planning – either full planning as in Soviet times, or regulatory planning, as in the capitalist system. (2) We have market pricing, which regulates the allocation of capital. (3) Finally, we have the emergence of mutual coordination or ‘stigmergy’, which brings open source commoning into the picture. Our proposal, ‘P2P Accounting for Planetary Survival: Towards a P2P Infrastructure for a Socially-Just Circular Society’ (Bauwens and Pazaitis 2020), consists of an integrated vision that combines the three forms, with mutual coordination at the first level. We now have distributed ledgersFootnote10 so that we can move from sharing code and knowledge to sharing transaction data, shared accounting, shared logistics, and so on. We are moving from the Internet of Communications to the Internet of Transactions which enables the development of collaborative open ecosystems consisting of networks of producers. I think this is a very important shift. PJ: And what about thermodynamic accounting? MB: Thermodynamic accounting is the ability to see flows of matter and energy and have them integrated into your accounting system. This implies that we can create our own data commons, data trusts, data co-ops, and so on. -- P2P Foundation: http://wiki.p2pfoundation.net <http://p2pfoundation.net> - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: ; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Curation of news on p2p/commons developments: https://www.facebook.com/groups/p2p.open/

What is happening in the world today is similar to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a Butterfly: a voracious destructive civilization breaking down and the potential birth of a new viable civilization for the Future. *Confronted with all that, you can look at the situation in two very different ways which completely change your emotions:* - Either you consider this “falling apart” as "*Apocalypse now*" - the end of the world and this might lead to Fear, Despair, Cynicism, even to Violence. Some live *"Nostalgia" *of the Future, a poetic awareness of a Future forever gone - *Or no apocalypse, not now*: rather than focusing on a dying world, you adopt the attitude of the imaginal cells, which are inside the body of the caterpilar: they don’t panic at all because they *SEE a more beautiful world is possible and are too busy building the FUTURE THEY HAVE IN MIND.* *The key rests in the way you look at the world :**The Future you imagine is the cause of the Present.* We all live with an imaginary Future in mind. The Future is a story we tell ourselves, even implicitly. It is a representation of what “could happen”, within the limits of our perceptions and *Imagination*. But it impacts all aspects of our lives, especially the way we set our priorities and make decisions *HERE and NOW.* *The Future is now ! *It is an emotional experience in the Present. This is crucial! Because ultimately our emotions guide our decisions. And every day, we all make decisions based on our Vision of the world “as it is” and on our capacity to imagine alternative possibilities. We need a Future we can Believe in. A meaning making Story that resonates with our deepest Aspirations and generates hope that a viable human Future is possible together, in a NO MAD LAND (based on Mutually Assisted Development). A Narrative able to generate what we call the *Next appeal: the “Erotica of the Future, a desire for the Future we want to create. So the Future we imagine can become the cause of our Present.* Now is the time to dare to imagine it. To make alternative narrative of the Future visible, desirable and actionable. "Be careful about the Present you create because it must look like the Future you dream of." Rather than building the Future on Fear, Despair or Violence, Shapership stands for building it on Hope, Imagination and Radical Wisdom. It focuses on the need to boost Creative Thinking, Imagination and to create the Next Appeal: the Erotica of the Future, an irresistible impulse towards the Future we desire.
