Clay Rodery for Noema Magazine Beset as we are these days by the cascading consequences of climate change and the descent into dysfunction of our social institutions, it is worth remembering Ivan Illich, a forgotten prophet whose time has come. Fortunately, two books on the 1970s apostle of the era of limits remind us of his prescient relevance: “Ivan Illich: An Intellectual Journey <https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_K2b1rWbBhppiwI4e1HHNV6hdw0vVRU6pQbvzO-TqSa…>” published by his friend and long-time interlocutor David Cayley this year, and “The Prophet of Cuernavaca: Ivan Illich and the Crisis of the West <https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_K2b1rWbBhppiwI4e1HHNV6hdw0vVRU6pQbvzO-TqSa…>” by Todd Hartch. Cayley’s book benefits from his long personal acquaintance and countless conversations over the years with Illich. Hartch, who never met Illich, offers a more objective account informed by critical distance from his subject. Both trace Illich from his early days as a parish priest in the impoverished Puerto Rican neighborhoods of New York to becoming vice-rector of the Catholic University of Puerto Rico to the long period in Cuernavaca, Mexico, where he sought to de-imperialize Catholic missionaries and hosted the radical thinkers of his day, to the striking story of his suffering and demise. Illich was a purveyor of impossible truths, truths so radical that they questioned the very foundations of modern certitudes — progress, economic growth, health, education, mobility. While he was not wrong, we had all been riding on a train going in the opposite direction for so long that it was hard to see how, in any practical sense, the momentum could ever be stalled. And that was his point. Now that “the shadow our future throws” of which Illich warned is darkening the skies of the present, it is time to reconsider his thought. Illich’s central contention was that persons are relational beings embedded in a matrix of the natural cosmos, convivial community with others and, as a fallen but still faithful priest, God’s grace. As the maverick thinker saw it, Western modernity rent asunder this multidimensional oneness of “Life.” For Illich, 17th-century science departed from the past by privileging the role of humans in the cosmos as above and apart from all other being. In doing so, it effectively declared “the death of nature,” turning it into a “resource” to feed the “pleonexia,” or radical greed, which fueled “development” and “progress” that transmuted endless “wants” into “needs.” As Illich saw it, the rise of universalizing social technologies — that is, institutions managed by strangers — transgressed the traditional bounds of diverse vernacular communities and harnessed human endeavor to a trajectory of limitless growth, creating a “radical monopoly” over the ways and means of living that blunted any alternative to industrializing the desires of consumer society. In the process, persons and communities alike were deprived of the practical knowledge to shape tools according to their own defined needs and choices. Robbed of such competence, they became servants to the logic of those institutions instead of the other way around. Conviviality vs. Productivity Illich defined conviviality as “autonomous and creative intercourse among persons, and the intercourse of persons with their environment.” He contrasted this to “the conditioned response of persons to the demands made upon them by others” from above and afar in the name of advancing progress. “I consider conviviality to be individual freedom realized in personal interdependence and, as such, an intrinsic ethical value,” he wrote in “Tools for Conviviality.” “I believe that, in any society, as conviviality is reduced below a certain level, no amount of industrial productivity can effectively satisfy the needs it creates among society’s members.” Illich didn’t stop there. His greatest insight was that when conviviality is swapped for productivity, monopolizing institutions that chart a singular path at mass scale become counterproductive to their original intent beyond a certain threshold. In his words, “By breaching the limits set on man by nature and history, industrial society engendered disability and suffering in the name of eliminating disability and suffering. … The warming biosphere is making it intolerable to think of industrial growth as progress; now it appears to us as aggression against the human condition.” In his book “Energy and Equity” Illich illustrated this point in terms all could easily understand. As anyone who has driven on a freeway would agree, individual mobility turns into collective congestion when everyone has a car. In this he was in league with the “small is beautiful” thinkers at the time such as Leopold Kohr and E. F. Schumacher. The Virtue Of Enoughness In his radically provocative way, Illich preached the “virtue of enoughness” as the frugal way out of a headlong rush to an untenable future. Indeed, in the 1980s he subsisted in the small hamlet of Ocotepec, about 50 miles from Mexico City, where I visited him one summer along with my wife Lilly and former California Governor Jerry Brown. The streets were unpaved with no streetlights. Packs of feral dogs, chickens and the odd burro roamed freely. Scorpions scuttled across the floors and walls. The austere room where Illich slept was adorned with nothing other than a massive crucifix. At the back of the compound, incongruously, stood a rustic library filled with rare Latin volumes where he labored in “the vineyard of the texts” like one of his idols, Hugh of Saint Victor. Over lunches of watery lentil soup and weak fruit juice, he would often invite over the “Red Bishops” of Cuernavaca and Chiapas for convivial banter. At night we would sit up drinking cheap Presidente brandy, pondering the fate of civilization. Illich carried his theme across the entire institutional landscape of modern society. In one of his most famously controversial books, “Deschooling Society,” he argued that the graduated credentialism of mass education actually made people more ignorant by standardizing what they can know and think about. In those early days of cybernetics, he hoped that the recursive feedback loops of information systems might help foster an “ecology of mind,” as the anthropologist Gregory Bateson framed it, re-embedding the person in the larger matrix of being. Yet he suspected in the end it would not turn out so well, instead feeding the illusion that humans could escape the limits of their condition through their tools. As we have now come to see, the algorithms of Big Tech are, after all, only mathematical institutions programmed to bolster the very modern certitudes Illich fundamentally questioned, accelerating “progress” along an unsustainable trajectory that would continue to wreak ruin on the planet and reduce, not enhance, personal autonomy. Here, too, he echoed other thinkers of his time like Jacques Ellul. The French theologian anticipated the surveillance capitalism of the digital age, believing that a technological society ends up imprisoning personal self-determination instead of liberating it. Brave New Biocracy It was perhaps with respect to health that Illich was most radical. He decried “the sacralization of ‘a life’” dis-embedded from the oneness of Life and fetishized as a detached immune system to be managed from sperm to worm by the “brave new biocracy” of modern medicine. For Illich, vaccines, clean water and simple hygiene like washing hands were responsible for most health advances. But he was blistering in his critique of our medical systems oriented toward postponing the end as long as possible. “We now see that a majority of these medical achievements are deceptive misnomers, actually prolonging the suffering of madmen, cripples, old fools and monsters,” he wrote. In his book “Medical Nemesis” Illich spoke of “iatrogenic illness” — illness caused by the “bureaucracy” of physicians who abandoned the ancient idea of health as “balance” within the environment in which a person lived. Such a healthy balance could not be achieved, he argued, in an unhealthy environment poisoned by untamed industrial growth. Illich walked the talk. He suffered in his last years from a cancerous tumor that grew to the size of a baseball on one side of his face. “Renouncing” the biocratic management of his health, Illich insisted on the “hygienic autonomy” of self-care and “the right to die without diagnosis.” When the pain was too great during the final phase of his life, he would seek relief by standing on his head against a wall or by smoking opium in a little pipe he carried around with him. In his more obscure and less public observations, Illich saw the Catholic Church’s depersonalized “kindness of strangers” as a corruption of the Christian act of charity institutionalized as a kind of inauthentic paternalism. In his book, Cayley suggests that Illich’s broad critique of the institutions of Western modernity were metaphors for an attack on the Catholic Church’s perversion of the personal experience of incarnation he was unwilling to make frontally, a kind of hidden theology that threaded through all his work. To the extent this errant pilgrim’s critique of the splintering and shattering of the oneness of Life can be considered theology, it is not so much hidden as constitutive of all Illich’s thinking. One does not have to embrace Illich’s romanticization of premodern times to grasp his relevance for the future headed our way. We appear to be entering a new pivotal age in which the modern certitudes he so thoroughly questioned are near exhaustion, finally opening the social imagination to the kind of fundamental reconsideration that seemed so radical in Illich’s day, but no longer do. Fwd: NEW REPORT: Rethinking Climate
by Michel Bauwens 05 Aug '21

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: RethinkX <media(a)rethinkx.com> Date: Thu, Aug 5, 2021 at 12:58 AM Subject: NEW REPORT: Rethinking Climate To: <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> New Report "Rethinking Climate" Just Released <https://RethinkX.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f24dea56f3182c06a7cab5…> As a thought leader who joined the conversation about our earlier reports, "Rethinking Transportation <https://RethinkX.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f24dea56f3182c06a7cab5…>," "Rethinking Food & Agriculture <https://RethinkX.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f24dea56f3182c06a7cab5…> ," "Rethinking Energy <https://RethinkX.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f24dea56f3182c06a7cab5…>," and "Rethinking Humanity <https://RethinkX.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f24dea56f3182c06a7cab5…>," we wanted to alert you to our latest report analyzing how, if we make the right choices, disruptive technologies can enable the world to eliminate 90 percent of carbon emissions within the next 15 years, and go beyond net zero after 2040 – far faster, and with far greater consequence, than is conventionally believed possible. Today, RethinkX <https://RethinkX.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f24dea56f3182c06a7cab5…> is releasing, “Rethinking Climate Change: How Humanity Can Choose to Reduce Emissions 90% by 2035 through the Disruption of Energy, Transportation, and Food with Existing Technologies <https://RethinkX.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f24dea56f3182c06a7cab5…>.” In this new report, we show that with the right societal choices these three disruptions can eliminate the overwhelming majority of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions worldwide within 15 years, and that market forces can be leveraged to do the bulk of the mitigation work because the technologies required are either already commercially available and competitive today, or can be deployed to market before 2025. This also means we can fight climate change while simultaneously saving trillions of dollars and fostering prosperity worldwide. Furthermore, these very same technologies will also make the cost of carbon withdrawal affordable, meaning that moonshot breakthrough technologies are not required to go beyond net zero from 2035 onwards. Regions, nations, cities, communities, businesses, and investors that choose to embrace and lead the disruptions will reap enormous economic and social rewards as well as environmental benefits, allowing less-developed areas to level the playing field and leapfrog over previous barriers to human development. Therefore, the greatest barrier to fighting climate change is our mindset. It is up to us to decide whether or not we deploy these technologies worldwide rapidly enough to avoid dangerous climate change. Our goal is to inspire a global conversation about the opportunities and threats of this technology-driven disruption and, importantly, the choices that can lead to a more equitable, healthy, resilient, and stable society.* Your participation in this conversation is crucial.* We invite you to explore our key findings below and share your thoughts via social media. You can find the report here <https://RethinkX.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f24dea56f3182c06a7cab5…>, and you can follow us on Twitter <https://RethinkX.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f24dea56f3182c06a7cab5…> and LinkedIn <https://RethinkX.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f24dea56f3182c06a7cab5…> . Thanks very much, James Arbib and Tony Seba Founders of RethinkX *KEY FINDINGS* - We already have the energy, transportation and food technologies needed to reduce over 90 percent of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions worldwide in the next 15 years. With the right societal choices, we can stop climate pollution at the levels needed to keep global warming well below 2 degrees Celsius. - Technology disruptions over the course of history – including automobiles, cameras and smartphones – have happened quickly and exponentially, making legacy industries obsolete within 10 to 15 years. Adopting a technology disruption mindset will allow policymakers to recognize the speed of the most critical disruptions, making more informed choices about where to focus action for maximum impact. - We can achieve a net zero future – affordably, on time, and opening up huge opportunities for carbon-free prosperity – if policymakers make smart choices to enable these highest impact technologies and stop supporting legacy industries that are getting in the way. If they are not decisive in this regard, we’ll lose precious time in responding to this crisis which will mean far larger planetary risks and trillions of dollars worth of losses that are otherwise avoidable. - Policymaker choices should strategically target and support the highest impact technologies and avoid other “scattershot” climate approaches that are far more costly and unfeasible, such as clean coal and carbon capture, as well as remove barriers that are stymying disruptive technologies. This approach can allow markets to do the bulk of the deployment work. - Highest impact technology sector opportunities include: - ENERGY: The largest, most immediate opportunity is in the energy sector (57.6 percent of GHGs) which is rapidly being transformed by affordable, scalable low-carbon technologies in the form of solar PVs, wind power and lithium-ion storage batteries. - TRANSPORTATION: The transportation sector (16.2 percent of GHGs) will face dramatic disruptions as electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous EVs enable transportation-as-a-service and bring an end to internal combustion engines and private vehicle ownership. - FOOD: Rapidly advancing technologies will drive disruption in the food sector (18 percent of GHGs) from precision fermentation and cellular agriculture, which will eventually replace meat and animal-based food products – freeing up the 2.7 billion hectares of land they rely on. - Each of these energy, transportation and food technologies will achieve significant GHG reductions within their own sectors, but when factoring in the impact of various feedback loops between these sectors their potential is exponentially larger. For example: global virgin steel production, which accounts for 7 percent of global GHGs, will fall dramatically as transportation reductions reduce the number of vehicles on the road, as energy disruptions reduce the number of cargo ships needed to transport coal and oil in all parts of the world, and as scrap from obsolete combustion vehicles and oil industry infrastructure makes large volumes of recycled steel cheaply available. - Disruptive technologies can help close the wealth and technology gaps between rich and poor countries. For example: rapidly scaling solar, wind and batteries would help deliver electricity to billions of people who have no electricity today. - The report outlines three different scenarios for policymakers: - THE ‘GET SERIOUS’ SCENARIO: This most ambitious response, where policymakers proactively accelerate the disruption of energy, transportation and food technologies over the 2020s and reforest just 20 percent of land freed up by food sector disruptions, would enable a GHG emission decline of over 60 percent by 2030 and 100 percent before 2035. The disruptions would also dramatically bring down the costs of carbon sequestration. By 2040, carbon emissions would be 20 percent below ‘net zero’ – good news indeed. - THE ‘BE SENSIBLE’ SCENARIO: By choosing to deploy and scale only those core technologies available today with positive economic impacts, humanity can achieve the GHG emissions reductions well within the timeline needed to limit global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius, as called for under the international Paris Climate Agreement <https://RethinkX.us15.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9f24dea56f3182c06a7cab5…>. By removing barriers to deployment and support for incumbent monopolies, 90% GHG reductions can be achieved by 2035. We can then reach net zero by 2040 through passive reforestation on land freed up by the food disruptions, and can continue to drawdown carbon from the atmosphere below ‘net zero’ from there onwards. - THE ‘GET STUCK’ SCENARIO: Policymakers might unwittingly or otherwise delay the disruptions, an approach with some of the markings of our situation today, such as subsidies and financial support for fossil fuels, utility monopolies and the livestock sector, resulting in emissions rising for another five years and global temperatures exceeding 2 degrees – placing us squarely in the “climate danger zone.” - The report provides a decision-making framework to help policymakers evaluate the ‘mitigation-readiness’ of climate solution technologies. This will help them effectively target technologies that are commercially available and competitive today to achieve the largest, fastest emissions reductions. *What Experts Say About RethinkX* “Rethinking Humanity is seminal. Whether you run a company, a city, or a nation state, you need to understand the simple patterns that drive complexity, disruption, and change in human history. Fwd: The Eutrapelia and Austerity of Ivan Illich (save the dates)
by Michel Bauwens 23 Jul '21

23 Jul '21

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Justin Murphy <justin(a)theotherlifenow.com> Date: Fri, Jul 23, 2021 at 12:05 PM Subject: The Eutrapelia and Austerity of Ivan Illich (save the dates) To: <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> The Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben recently wrote that the work of Ivan Illich—misunderstood, misrepresented, and underrated for decades—is finally seeing its "hour of legibility." This is why we are pleased to be launching the sixth course in the IndieThinkers.org course system, dedicated to the famous anarchist Catholic priest from Croatia. After previous courses on Deleuze, Jung, Bataille, Leo Strauss, and René Girard, we are excited to give Ivan Illich his due in this esteemed pantheon. I'm writing you with a minor update to our schedule for the course, so you can save the dates and get ready to enroll shortly. But before I do that, I want to share a word from the course instructor, the British philosopher Nina Power. In our recent podcast on Ivan Illich <https://click.convertkit-mail4.com/zlum896rwztnh2mlgoap/m2h7h6uoom255pcm/aH…>, Nina said: One of the things that Illich does really well is he beautifully resurrects concepts and terms. *One of his words is **eutrapelia**, which he translates as graceful playfulness*, which he thinks we need to bring back into our personal relationships. It's an ancient term. To be convivial, obviously, is to live with, but not just to live, but to thrive, in this kind of graceful playfulness. The idea that social interaction doesn't have to be the mediated relation of people as things, in terms of exchange and use, but rather *a kind of beautiful game*, if you like. And so he uses conviviality against the expansion of technology, basically. He wants to limit tools, so that they serve *eutrapelia*. Also, austerity. He tries to resurrect this word "austerity," which is even more interesting to do now, because austerity became an economic term that was used to punish countries like Britain after economic crashes. It doesn't have very nice associations. But for Illich, he takes the concept of austerity from Aquinas: he talks about it as the foundation of friendship. And so austerity then is the “austerity of virtue, which does not exclude all enjoyments, but only those which are distracting from, or destructive of, personal relatedness.” *Austerity allows space for beautiful or graceful relationality, by limiting distractions.* Already, one can sense how Illich's worldview disrupts contemporary ideological coordinates. We think this is one of the best reasons to study Illich right now, at a time when public language is so badly suffocated by politics and dubious ideological mappings. Nina's intensive 8-week course on Ivan Illich is nearing its start. Here are the key dates. - This Monday the 26th we're hosting a free workshop with the world's leading expert on Illich, David Cayley. Register now. <https://click.convertkit-mail4.com/zlum896rwztnh2mlgoap/e0hg68k3c0ukkqmvv3u…> - Enrollment will officially open on the following *Thursday, July 29* (I'll email you that morning). - We'll host an Orientation/Meet-and-Greet on *Thursday, August 5th* at 10am Central / 4pm London. - Then *group discussion seminars every following Thursday,* at the same time, for 8 weeks. Attend workshop with Illich biographer David Cayley <https://click.convertkit-mail4.com/zlum896rwztnh2mlgoap/z2h84z98a7uoop5662h…> Sincerely, Justin Murphy Unsubscribe <https://unsubscribe.convertkit-mail4.com/zlum896rwztnh2mlgoap> | Update your profile <https://preferences.convertkit-mail4.com/zlum896rwztnh2mlgoap> | 113 Cherry St, Seattle, WA 98104-2205 [image: Built with ConvertKit] <https://click.convertkit-mail4.com/zlum896rwztnh2mlgoap/e0hph0ukkqmvv8i8/aH…> -- P2P Foundation: http://wiki.p2pfoundation.net <http://p2pfoundation.net> - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: ; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Curation of news on p2p/commons developments: https://www.facebook.com/groups/p2p.open/

The world collectively went through extended periods of uncertainty, while people tried to protect themselves from the health and economic crises. The global pandemic took a toll on everyone, including cooperatives. Nonetheless, the worker and social cooperatives in our network showed incredible resilience throughout the crisis. Through worker ownership and democratic control, cooperators adapted to new production modes and paces, digitalized services at record speed, and showed strength and unity. Thanks to the tight-knit network that cooperatives have in their communities, they were also able to help the most vulnerable ones when they needed it the most. *CICOPA would like to take this opportunity to invite everyone to have a moment of reflection on how we can “Rebuild better together”. * We believe that by rethinking our education, and implementing cooperative education in school curricula, the new generation will have the tools to establish more just and democratic enterprises. Together, through the cooperative values and identity, through solidarity, social justice, and democracy at work, we can change the world. *CICOPA wishes you a very happy International Day of Cooperatives! * Take a look at the video message from our President Iñigo Albizuri below. <https://cicopa.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3a463471cd0a9c6cf744bf5f8&…> Message from CICOPA President, Iñigo Albizuri.
