Moral foundations theory - Wikipedia
by Dante Monson 20 Oct '24

20 Oct '24

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_foundations_theory " As Haidt and his collaborators worked within the social intuitionist approach, they began to devote attention to the sources of the intuitions that they believed underlay moral judgments. In a 2004 article published in the journal *Daedalus <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daedalus_%28journal%29>*,[1] <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_foundations_theory#cite_note-Haidt200…> Haidt and Joseph surveyed works on the roots of morality, including the work of Frans de Waal <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frans_de_Waal>, Donald Brown <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Brown_%28anthropologist%29> and Shweder, as well as Alan Fiske <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Fiske> 's relational models theory <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relational_models_theory>[18] <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_foundations_theory#cite_note-Fiske199…> and Shalom Schwartz <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shalom_Schwartz>'s theory of basic human values <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theory_of_basic_human_values>.[19] <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_foundations_theory#cite_note-Schwartz…> From their review of these earlier lines of research, they suggested that all individuals possess four "intuitive ethics", stemming from the process of human evolution <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_evolution> as responses to adaptive challenges.[1] <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_foundations_theory#cite_note-Haidt200…> They labelled these four ethics as suffering, hierarchy, reciprocity, and purity. Invoking the notion of preparedness <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preparedness_%28learning%29>, Haidt and Joseph claimed that each of the ethics formed a cognitive module <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_module>, whose development was shaped by culture.[1] <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_foundations_theory#cite_note-Haidt200…> [20] <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_foundations_theory#cite_note-Haidt&Jo…> They wrote that each module could "provide little more than flashes of affect when certain patterns are encountered in the social world", while a cultural learning process shaped each individual's response to these flashes. Morality diverges because different cultures utilize the four "building blocks" provided by the modules differently.[1] <https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moral_foundations_theory#cite_note-Haidt200…> "

Full issue: DOI: https://doi.org/10.31269/triplec.v22i1.1501 ABSTRACT: tripleC’s special issue on “Critical Perspectives on Digital Capitalism: Theories and Praxis” presents 14 papers and an introduction that contribute to establishing foundations of critical theories and the philosophy of praxis in the light of digital capitalism. In Marxist theory, a theoretical and analytical strand has emerged that is focused on the roles that knowledge, communication, media, digital media, and digital communication play in and beyond capitalism. This special issue is a contribution to this type of Marxian analysis and theory construction. TABLE OF CONTENTS Critical Perspectives on Digital Capitalism: Theories and Praxis. Tech Billionaires Launch Fund to Create New Libertarian Societies
by Dante Monson 16 Dec '23

16 Dec '23

Note : I might have a different view on this. A distributed network state should not be a tool for hoarders and monopolists. It ought to be precisely to counter the control of hoarding monopolists. Hence it may require different protocols than what some right wing libertarians might chose for https://www.vice.com/en/article/wxjknx/tech-billionaires-launch-fund-to-cre… " The Bitcoin-based Network State will be based on “internet values” such as “open source” and “peer-to-peer,” Srinivasan has written <https://balajis.com/p/network-state-conference>. And while it might initially form online, the ultimate goal is to form communities in the real world and even found new cities complete with their own experimental versions of existing institutions run by private companies. Its contributions show how we can best critically theorise digital capitalism and what forms of political praxis exist and are needed in social struggles that stand in the context of digital capitalism. The issue will feature contributions by Jodi Dean, Christian Fuchs, Michael Hardt & Antonio Negri, and Sabine Pfeiffer. Facebook and Google exploit our digital labour. That's digital capitalism. In late 2022 and early 2023, Google laid off 12,000 employees, Microsoft 10,000, Twitter more than 10,000, Amazon 18,000, and Facebook 11,000. That's digital capitalism. Algorithms are used by corporations for socially sorting and discriminating against customers who struggle to make ends meet and live in deprived neighbourhoods. That's digital capitalism. Lots of clickwork is conducted by poorly paid women in the Global South. That's digital capitalism. Digital fascism, fake news, post-truth culture and algorithmic politics circulate on capitalist and state-capitalist Internet platforms. That's digital capitalism. Information war and echo chambers polarise the digital public sphere, making a new World War between imperialist powers that compete at the global level for the control of territory, economic power and political as well as ideological hegemony and the nuclear annihilation of humankind and life on Earth more likely. That's digital capitalism. Recently, digital workers assembling iPhones protested against the poor working conditions they faced at Foxconn in Zhengzhou during the COVID-19 pandemic. That's a praxis that challenges digital capitalism. In 2021, warehouse workers founded the Amazon Labor Union. That's a praxis that challenges digital capitalism. The non-profit federated Internet platform Mastodon has become a viable digital alternative in the light of users' discontent with Elon Musk's takeover of Twitter. That's a praxis that challenges digital capitalism. Internet experts and users have co-written the Public Service Media and Public Service Internet Manifesto that demands turning the Internet into a public good and advancing digital democracy. That's a praxis that challenges digital capitalism. While fascists spread post-truth on social media, the progressive news hour Democracy Now! has since 1996 utilised the non-commercial Internet, Public Service Media, as well as community radio and television stations for broadcasting a high-quality, independent news programme that reaches millions of viewers and questions fake news. That's a praxis that challenges digital capitalism. Digital capitalism matters. Digital capitalism shapes our lives. Digital capitalism needs to be better understood. We need critical theories of digital capitalism. We need to better understand praxes that challenge digital capitalism and aim at fostering digital democracy and digital socialism. tripleC's special issue on "Critical Perspectives on Digital Capitalism: Theories and Praxis" wants to contribute to establishing foundations of critical theories and the philosophy of praxis in the light of digital capitalism. We invite contributions that engage with theoretical and praxeological questions. More information: https://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/announcement/view/40

Critical Digital and Social Media Studies Book Series (UWP, ed. Christian Fuchs): New Call for Open Access Book Submissions https://uwestminsterpress.blog/2023/01/30/call-for-book-proposals-for-the-c… Critical Digital and Social Media Studies is an established open access book series edited by Professor Christian Fuchs (Paderborn University) and published by the University of Westminster Press (UWP): https://www.uwestminsterpress.co.uk/site/books/series/critical-digital-and-… The Critical Digital and Social Media Studies series publishes books that critically study the role of the internet, digital and social media in society and make critical interventions. Books in the series analyse how power structures, digital capitalism, ideology, domination and social struggles shape and are shaped by digital and social media. They use and develop critical theories, are profoundly theoretical and discuss the political relevance and implications of the topics under scrutiny. The Series has published 24 books since its launch in 2016. UWP is a non-profit open access publisher of Humanities and Social Science research, based in the UK, with a global reach. We support ‘diamond’ open access and most of our publications are made available without fees to either authors or readers. With funding from the Jisc Open Access Community Framework (OACF), which provides financial support allowing us to publish without author-facing fees or book processing charges, we are inviting submissions for book proposals that fall within the scope of the series, and fit the criteria as set out below. Books in the series are published open access online in ePUB, Mobi and PDF formats and simultaneously as affordable paperbacks. They are published using a Creative Commons licence (we use CC-BY-NC-ND as our standard licence but can discuss other options), and copyright in the work is retained by the author. The series is a critical theory forum for internet and social media research that makes critical interventions into contemporary political topics in the context of digital and social media. It is interested in publishing work that, based on critical theory foundations, develops and applies critical social media research methods that challenge digital positivism, as well as digital media ethics that are grounded in critical social theories and critical philosophy. The series’ understanding of critical theory and critique is grounded in approaches such as critical political economy and Frankfurt School critical theory. CALL DETAILS All books must be between 35,000-90,000 words in length, with a preference for projects that can submit a full draft typescript within the next 6-12 months. Single and co-authored works as well as edited collections are accepted. We have a preference for monographs but will also consider suggestions for collected volumes. Livre - Gaël Giraud - Composer un monde en commun - Une théologie politique de l'Anthropocène
by Dante Monson 22 Oct '22

22 Oct '22
