The Public Service Media and Public Service Internet Manifesto
by Christian Fuchs 18 Jun '21

The Public Service Media and Public Service Internet Manifesto The Internet and the media landscape are broken. The dominant commercial Internet platforms endanger democracy. Despite all the great opportunities the Internet has offered to society and individuals, the digital giants have acquired unparalleled economic, political and cultural power. As currently organised, the Internet separates and divides instead of creating common spaces for negotiating difference and disagreement. Democracy requires Public Service Media and a Public Service Internet. "One of America’s most corrupt and ineffective systems" is the way Dave Chase <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…>, a community-minded healthcare CEO and author, recently described our "out-of-control" largest sector (now one-fifth of our entire national economy) and its growing toll on Americans. In his new book, *Relocalizing Health* (free PDF available here <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…>), he further argues that the COVID-19 tragedy was nothing less than a wake-up call. The future of healthcare, he concludes, must be "local, open, and independent." Healthcare must be "relocalized." Chase’s prescriptions might make some of us think naturally of co-ops, which are organizations typically embedded in their local communities, open (in membership), and resolutely independent. And yet. . . . Given the size and sheer complexity of our national healthcare system, it’s hard to imagine how even a large number of healthcare-focused co-ops could make much of a dent in its many and growing problems. What could a positive "disruption" look like? Join us <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…> at *12:30 ET on Tuesday, June 15* as Ownership Matters, co-sponsoring with Zebras Unite <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…>, convenes three outstanding co-op leaders pursuing different approaches to empowering home care workers and patients with chronic conditions. Our panelists will be: - Deborah Craig, Cooperative Developer, Northwest Cooperative Development Center <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…> In addition to working for Circle of Life homecare in Bellingham, WA (before joining NWCDC), Deborah also helped develop Peninsula Homecare, Capital Homecare, and Ridgeline Homecare. As her NWCDC colleague John McNamara puts it, "if there is a ‘Washington Model’ for homecare co-ops, Deborah is the architect." - Jen Horonjeff, founder/CEO, Savvy <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…> Jen is the co-founder of Savvy, the first and only patient-owned public benefit co-op. Their platform connects patients to paid assignments with healthcare IT, medical device, and pharmaceutical companies seeking feedback from patients for product development. - Adam Rose, COO and Director, Obran Health <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…> Adam is the Director of Obran Health, a worker-owned home-based healthcare company. Obran Health is changing how care is delivered in the home and in outpatient settings by empowering and protecting caregivers. Obran Health’s primary businesses are in personal care, home health, and hospice care, building on a long legacy of worker owned co-ops. The Break Room: Informal Conversations about Work What the Movement for Worker Ownership Really Needs, with Kathy Gregg I think a lot of people mistake scalability for growth and that’s part of why we aren’t getting where we want to go. I want to see more worker owners and more worker cooperatives. Scaling will not grow coops and scalability will not generate demand for more coops. A substantive and substantial conversation with Kathy Gregg, a Massachusetts-based business attorney, an advocate for worker-owned businesses in her practice, a legal fellow with the Sustainable Economies Law Center and founder of the new Co-op Law Lab, launching in July. OM: You’ve been a practicing corporate attorney in a wide variety of specialties and industries for over two decades — startups to billion-dollar enterprises. We met a few months ago when we both participated in the Platform Cooperative Consortium’s second live online course, offered by the New School and Mondragon Team Academy. It was 146 co-op enthusiasts from all over the globe — a fantastic experience. KG: Yes, that course was a tremendous opportunity! We should give a big shout-out to Mondragon folks Jose Mari Luzarraga and Ana Aguirre for being tireless program coaches and cat herders, and to Greg Brodsky, our US cohort troop leader, for bringing warm cookies of encouragement to every meeting. And Trebor Scholz, of course, for his relentless thought leadership. I don’t think I’ve had a chance to ask you, what attracted you to the course? OM: Just my own deep sense of ignorance about the topic, mostly! KG: I’d been puzzling over the platform cooperative construct and its potential since attending "Who Owns the World?", the 2019 conference on platform cooperativism at The New School. My advocacy for worker coops is based on their potential to liberate labor from the "divine right of capital" to extract profits from and control the lives of workers. I don’t see that potential in other cooperative models. While other forms of cooperatives, such as consumer and producer coops, can soften the harsh edges of capitalism, they don’t structurally change the capitalist paradigm. OM: So where do platform cooperatives fit in? KG: I’m curious to see what kind of ownership model they will implement. Capitalist platforms exponentially magnify riches and ruins. That’s why they’ve attracted vast amounts of venture capital. And that’s why they’ve been able to harm huge swathes of populations on such an enormous scale that we’ve more or less been cornered into surrendering. Can platform tech companies with their capacity for mass exploitation be converted to engines of liberation? Or are we going to merely replicate what I call brothel capitalism and end up owning the markets at which we sell ourselves? What a privilege to explore these issues with our course colleagues! OM: At the outset of the course, we were asked to write an essay about a class topic that interested us. I wrote a little thing about how excited I was to have a chance at collaborating with a global community. You, on the other hand, knocked out a dense 5-page article that could have gone into the Harvard Business Review. KG: Well then you were obviously the smarter one! It was a lot of work but I knew the course would force me to walk the talk I always give my own clients about the necessity of developing a comprehensive business plan. And I highly recommend it to all cooperators and their advisors. OM: I want to talk about your striking article which was on "the meaning, value and objective of scaling" for co-ops. KG: "How to scale" is a topic that has dominated much of the conversation and work around cooperatives in the U.S. for the eight years I’ve been involved, and I’m sure well before that. Meanwhile the meaning, value and objective of scaling receives a lot less discussion in my experience. I suspect that a lack of consensus on the "why" and "what" of scaling has impeded some coordinated actions that might take place if we were clearer about our objectives. Of course, I recognize there is no single best way forward, or else everyone would already be on that road. For sure no one has been slacking and progress has been made on a number of fronts. Still, we need to acknowledge that worker cooperatives in the U.S. remain "a fart in a hurricane" in the colorful words of a recent conference presenter. And we need to ask why and what we can do differently. OM: We need to fall in love with the problem, as we were regularly reminded in our platform co-op class, not with our solutions. KG: Exactly! I wanted to explore what value the concept of scalability at the individual business level brings to the work of building a cooperative economy. What problems are we trying to solve and why? Are they real and pressing problems that are preventing progress for a lot of people? If not, let’s focus our energies elsewhere. Read the rest: "What the Movement for Worker Ownership Really Needs" <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…> Europe Report: Leo Sammallahti on the "Secret" of Finnish Cooperativism We’re happy to welcome Leo Sammallahti as a new contributor, reporting on European co-op and ownership news. He also writes at Mutual Interest Media <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…> and is marketing manager for Coop Exchange <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…> . According to the annual update for the World Happiness Report <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…>, Finland has been ranked as the happiest country in the world — for the fourth year in a row. (If you didn’t know, it turns out social happiness is actually a measurable <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…> thing.) Perhaps it’s no coincidence that the country is also widely viewed as having the most cooperative economic system in the world. *An astounding 90% of the population are cooperative members, and more than half have a membership in multiple co-operatives.* OP Financial Group <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…>, the leading bank and insurance company, is a consumer co-operative, as is the largest retailer, S-Group <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…>, which dominates the grocery sector by having a market share over twice as big as its next biggest competitor. Forestry has always been one of the main export industries, and over half of the privately-owned forests belong to the over 100,000 members of the Metsa Group cooperative <https://ownershipmatters.lt.acemlnc.com/Prod/link-tracker?redirectUrl=aHR0c…>, which is also leading the transformation towards environmental sustainability by providing 16% of the renewable energy in the country. S-Group is another major player in this area and has recently become the largest producer of solar energy. There are no definitive answers as to why this distant and small country has provided such fertile soil to the cooperative movement, but looking at the first seeds planted might offer some clues. The first cooperatives were established in the late 19th century when the Russian Empire still dominated the country. During this period, few Finns had accumulated wealth over the generations while the elites consisted of Russians or Swedes, also previous colonizers. To reach independence, the Finns needed to first become economically self-sufficient. They soon realized that while individually poor, pooling resources collectively through cooperatives was the way to build economic power. Cooperatives didn’t just build economic power. They also instilled confidence among the people in their ability to govern themselves democratically. Alongside trade unions, the cooperatives were laboratories of democratic experimentation that reached a critical mass in 1906, when Finland became the first country in the world to have a parliament where everyone had an equal right to stand and vote in the elections. It took another 11 years until Finland gained independence, but it could be that becoming accustomed to democracy before anyone else played a role in the success of the cooperative sector. Fwd: Why are you on the map, Michel?

Considering that it's still early days for us, the map seems to be making an impression. Thank you, Michel for checking it out! [image: Screen Shot 2021-05-07 at 13.06.15] Map Criteria One of the most common questions we received for this early draft of the map is: "Why am I on the map - what are your selection criteria?" We were going to publish clear criteria about who gets to be on the map and who doesn't. And then we decided that crowd wisdom is far more meaningful than arbitrary criteria. So, we simply selected people who had been repeatedly interviewed, referenced or quoted by peers. So, Michel, you're on the map because your name kept popping up on our radar in relation to the work you're doing. Thank you for being an innovator in the regeneration space! Feedback We'd love to know what you think of the map so far. Please take just 2 minutes to share your thoughts. Fwd: [commoning] Two Events Celebrating the Life and Contribution of Alexander Bogdanov
by Michel Bauwens 05 May '21

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: orsan senalp via Commoning <commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org> Date: Wed, May 5, 2021 at 4:31 PM Subject: [commoning] Two Events Celebrating the Life and Contribution of Alexander Bogdanov To: Commoning <commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org> The Centre for Systems Studies Online, 2 - 3 June Two Events Celebrating the Life and Contribution of Alexander Bogdanov Alexander Bogdanov was one of the most creative and inspiring figures of the 20th Century. His utopian novel, Red Star, started the genre of Bolshevik science fiction, and he was the founder of the world’s first haematology institute. He was a leader of the Russian Bolsheviks, working with Lenin, at the turn of the last century, and he produced the first systematic study of ideology, consciousness, and cultural hegemony from a Marxian point of view, decades before the emergence of so-called critical, western, or neo-Marxist approaches. The year 2021 marks the centenary of the beginning of the demise of Bogdanov. Lenin republished his Materialism and Empiriocriticsm and launched an attack on Proletkult in 1920, which resulted in Bogdanov stepping down from his role in this movement in the following year. With Stalin’s rise to power and Bogdanov’s early death in 1928, one of the most significant contributions made to human culture was lost for several decades. The rediscovery of Bogdanov’s work began in Russia in the 1960s. Official recognition of Bogdanov and his place in history occurred in the Glasnost and Perestroika period of the late 1980s. Since then, Bogdanov’s work has gained increasing acclaim in his homeland and beyond. As renowned systems thinker Fritjof Capra famously pointed out, Bogdanov’s “Tektology was the first attempt in the history of science to arrive at a systematic formulation of the principles of organization operating in living and nonliving systems”. Since Capra made this claim in 1996, Bogdanov has been recognised as the first systematiser of systems thinking. However, the deserved global full recovery and recognition of Bogdanov’s contribution has yet to come about. But, a century after the beginning of his demise, it seems like a breakthrough is happening. In 2019, the first Systems World of Bogdanov conference was organised by the Financial University in Moscow, with more than 105 papers being presented. The second of these biennial conferences is planned for the autumn of 2021. With the aim of promoting awareness of Bogdanov’s work, the Centre for Systems Studies is hosting two associated events that celebrate his life and contribution. The first of these events is the Annual Mike Jackson Lecture and the second one is an online mini-symposium. Please note that you will need to register for each event separately (registering for one doesn’t automatically give you access to the other). Fwd: Call for Book Chapters: SDG18 - Communication for All
by Michel Bauwens 05 May '21

05 May '21

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Jan Servaes <9freenet9(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, May 5, 2021 at 2:23 PM Subject: Call for Book Chapters: SDG18 - Communication for All To: Alankar Kaushik <alankar(a)eflushc.ac.in>, ACMC Secretariat < secretariat(a)asianmediacongress.org>, Acunzo, Mario (DPSA) < Mario.Acunzo(a)fao.org> *SDG18-Communication for All* Call for Chapters Abstracts expected by 10 June 2021 The 2030 agenda for development or what is known as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is perhaps the most ambitious agenda collectively agreed by 193 countries in human history. In 2015, the UN Member States adopted the 17 SDGs as a framework that would help address the challenges being faced by humanity. From eradicating poverty, ending hunger, providing universal access to healthcare and education, addressing climate change; to the partnering of individuals, philanthropists and nation states to achieve the global goals. Yet, the framers of the 2030 agenda for development comprising key stakeholders from all sectors of all life forgot to dedicate one goal on the role of communication in achieving the SDGs. Such an oversight has attracted the attention of media and communication scholars alike, journalists and policy makers who understand that it is nearly impossible to achieve the SDGs without the articulation and embrace of the role of communication in development. The COVID-19 pandemic which struck in 2019 has shown why communication is essential to human survival. The Pandemic which started as a health crisis and later metamorphosed into a full-blown economic crisis is now having a direct and indirect impact on the possibility of achieving each of the SDGs. The Financing for Sustainable Development Report 2021 says the global economy has experienced the worst recession in 90 years, with the most vulnerable segments of societies disproportionately affected. An estimated 114 million jobs have been lost, and about 120 million people have been plunged back into extreme poverty (https://developmentfinance.un.org/) A major lesson that came out of the COVID-19 pandemic was the role of communication in providing support for the survival of the global economy and society as a whole. The global community became more attached to the traditional and social media in order to understand the nature of the virus, how it spreads and measures needed to curtail the spread of the infection. Social, economic and educational life moved from physical to a now universally accepted virtual life style. Key global industries resorted to working from home. Virtual meetings by heads of states are now normal and remote education from primary to tertiary levels are gaining ground by the day. Following the global lockdown, the resilience needed to survive the pandemic largely rested on the shoulders of the available communication infrastructure. *Zoom,* which had an average of 19 million daily users in December 2019 now averages 300 million users per day. *Teams, *developed as a tool for remote work has 145 million daily users as announced by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in April 2021. A study by the *World Health Organization* shows rapid increase in remote consultation in the healthcare industry, especially in UK, France, Malta, Germany, Poland, Luxemburg and Austria. Between March and April 2020, 5.5 million people received online consultation from 36,000-56,000 physicians in France (Richardson et al 2020). The pandemic also exposed major development challenges such as digital inequality. According to the UN, COVID-19 has forced the closure of schools in 191 countries affecting 1.5 billion students and 63 million primary and secondary school teachers (UN News 2020). Essentially development has become a communication issue and communication is a development issue. How could such a vital pillar of life be missing in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals? Therefore, *we invite high-quality submissions from authors that would explore the notion of SDG18 (Communication for All).* Building on the works of Lee and Vargas (2020), Yusha’u and Servaes (2021) and Servaes (2017), we see SDG18 (Communication for all) as inevitable in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Development. *We welcome critical submissions and high-quality research that explore this topic in relation to, but not limited to the following:* * SDG18-Communication for all, targets and indicators. * Role of SDG-18 in the realization of each of the 17 SDGs earlier agreed by the UN. * Why the SDGs should be revisited to include SDG18-Communication for all. * Why SDG-18 is essential in post-COVID-19 economic recovery. * SDG18 and remote working (Work from Home). * SDG18 and Communication for Development and Social Change. * SDG18 and the new normal in post-COVID-19 World. * SDG18 and the World in 2030. * SDG18 and Fake News. * SDG18 and the role of mass media in development. * Role of SDG18 in containing future pandemics. * SDG18, innovation, technology and entrepreneurship. * SDG18 and the digital divide. * SDG18 in diplomacy and international relations in post COVID-19 world. * SDG18 and vaccine hesitancy. * SDG18 and sports. * SDG18 and the politics of COVID-19 vaccine development and distribution. * SDG18 and the role of faith in development. * SDG18 and ‘building back better. The book is expected to be published as part of the *Palgrave Macmillan’s SDGs series*. Authors should submit *300 words abstract* to the editors: *Jan Servaes* (9freenet9(a)gmail.com) and *Muhammad Jameel Yusha’u* ( mjyushau(a)gmail.com) *by 10 June 2021*. Authors whose abstract meet the high-quality criteria would be contacted by 10 July 2021. *Full chapters are expected by 1**st** November 2021*. All chapters will go through a peer review process. Submitted abstracts must contain the following information: + Name of author(s). + Affiliation. + Email address. + 150 words profile. + Contact number. + Corresponding author should be specified where there is more than one author. *References* Lee, P., Vargas, L. Fwd: Central banks failing to match green rhetoric with action - report
by Michel Bauwens 31 Mar '21

31 Mar '21

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Anna Pick <press(a)positivemoney.org> Date: Wed, Mar 31, 2021 at 2:58 PM Subject: Central banks failing to match green rhetoric with action - report To: Michel Bauwens <michel.bauwens(a)p2pfoundation.net> Good morning, Positive Money has today launched the ‘Green Central Banking Scorecard’, a report that reveals how G20 central banks are faring on climate action. The research reveals a complete absence of high impact climate policies among G20 central banks, only months ahead of the crucial COP26 summit in November. Despite the Chancellor’s wish for the UK to be the world leader <https://positivemoney-org-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/Redirect?ukey=15WoTxYC…> on green finance, the UK comes in 4th, behind China, Brazil and France. The UK scores 10/10 for research and advocacy, but has so far failed to translate this into meaningful action, lagging behind on categories for monetary policy (4/50), financial policy (19/50), and ‘leading by example’ (5/20). With the UK-hosted G7 Summit <https://positivemoney-org-dot-yamm-track.appspot.com/Redirect?ukey=15WoTxYC…> coming up in June and the Glasgow COP26 talks in November, the Bank of England has a narrow window to announce concrete measures and establish itself as a global leader on greening the financial system. Please find below the full press release, and do get in touch if you would like further information or a briefing. I am available on 07948802104. Best, Anna ### FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Central banks failing to match green rhetoric with action - report Absence of high impact climate policies among G20 central banks, report reveals London, 31 March 2020 - Monetary and financial authorities across the world’s largest economies aren’t practicing what they preach on climate, according to a new report published today by research and campaign group Positive Money. Endorsed by 24 leading research institutes and NGOs, Positive Money’s ‘Green Central Banking Scorecard’ assesses the relative progress G20 central banks have made on sustainability in relation to research and advocacy, monetary policy, financial policy, as well as other ways they are leading by example, and sets out what actions policymakers could be taking to tackle environmental breakdown. The results show that while 14 out of 20 central banks scored full marks on their research and advocacy efforts, this has so far rarely translated into concrete action, with overall scores dragged down by a stark lack of green monetary and financial policies across the board. China tops this year’s scorecard with an aggregate score of 50 out of 130, which equates to a mediocre ‘C’ grade in the scorecard. This reflects the fact that, while China’s monetary and financial authorities have taken steps to steer lending towards greener activities, even policymakers in the top ranking countries still have a long way to go to align finance with the climate goals governments have committed to. The report reveals an absence of high-impact policies that meaningfully reduce financial support for fossil fuels across the G20. In cases where central banks have integrated climate into their policies, the focus has been on financial disclosures, stress tests, and encouraging lending towards green assets, rather than crucial steps to wind down financial support for fossil-fuel-intensive and ecologically harmful activities. The authors call for policymakers to urgently remedy this policy shortfall by taking action to exclude unsustainable activities from the assets they purchase and accept as collateral for lending, and for financial regulation to penalise high-carbon lending, with higher capital requirements to more accurately reflect the risk of fossil fuel investments. As well as being a necessary prerequisite for central banks’ goals of maintaining price and financial stability and supporting government policy, the report also argues that the Covid-19 pandemic, which has origins in ecological degradation, strengthens the case for central banks taking a more proactive and interventionist role in promoting sustainability. Positive Money’s report comes after the 2021 Banking on Climate Change report from Rainforest Action Network and other NGOs last week revealed that the world’s 60 largest private banks have financed fossil fuels to the tune of $3.8 trillion since the Paris Agreement in 2015, with a 10% increase in fossil fuel expansion projects in 2020. The report comes as G20 finance ministers and central bankers are set to meet on 7-8 April to discuss a new Action Plan to address global challenges including climate and environment-related risks. David Barmes, Positive Money economist and lead author of the report, said: “While it’s positive that central bankers are ‘talking the talk’ by featuring climate more prominently in speeches and research, there has been a widespread failure to ‘walk the walk’ by turning these words into concrete policy action. “The 2008 crash showed financial markets cannot be left to self-regulate in the face of systemic risk, but by failing to confront the climate crisis we are repeating the same mistakes on an even bigger scale. Global finance will continue to generate instability and environmental breakdown until central banks and supervisors reshape the financial system to better serve people and the planet. “Protecting environmental stability is a prerequisite for maintaining monetary and financial stability. If central banks are to fulfil their core mandates and support governments’ climate targets, they must step up action to clamp down on dirty financial flows.” On the Bank of England falling behind other countries’ central banks ahead of the UK hosting COP26, Katie Kedward, Policy Fellow at UCL’s Institute for Innovation and Public Research, said: “The Bank of England has taken a leading role in its research and advocacy on climate change. With only months to go before the UK hosts the crucial COP26 summit, this research underscores that the Bank of England can go further to contribute to the greening of the financial system. “The newly updated green mandate from the government will now help the Bank to take further steps through its monetary and financial policies, and it is positive to see the recent commitment to decarbonise the corporate bond purchase portfolio. In order to ‘lead by example’, the Bank of England should explore how to implement other important policies, such as climate-aligned capital requirements to actively penalise high-carbon lending.” Notes 1.
