---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Stefan Meretz via Commoning <commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org> Date: Sun, Feb 14, 2021 at 2:26 PM Subject: [commoning] Workshop »Envisioning Post-Capitalist Societies via Simulation« To: Commoning <commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org> Dear all. On February, 18th/19th, 2021, the project „Society after Money“ is holding a workshop online: „Envisioning Post-Capitalist Societies via Simulation – Critique, Utopias and Agent Based Modelling“. PDF-Flyer: https://nach-dem-geld.de/wp-content/uploads/Post-Capitalist-Utopia-Poster.p… How might a post-capitalist society look like? How can we conceive modes of production and coordination that no longer rely on money, markets and the state? Is this possible on a large-scale, not only as small community projects, but society-wide? The interdisciplinary research group „Society after Money“ (funded by the Volkswagen Foundation), whose goal is to build an Agent Based Model of a post-capitalist economy that can serve as a laboratory to foster thinking about a society after money via experimentation, has invited scholars from respective fields to debate the nexus of critique, utopia and simulation. We explored the archetypal model of the shaman as defined by religious historian Mircea Eliade in his groundbreaking book, *Shamanism: Archaic Techniques of Ecstasy*. We discussed initiation as a ritualized process found cross-culturally, until the birth of modern civilization. We looked at the psychedelic origins of contemporary folk archetypes like Santa Clause and the witch’s broomstick. This Sunday, we will explore the relationship between the psychedelic experience and modernism as reflected by many artists, thinkers, explorers and anthropologists over the last centuries. We will also have a special guest: Brian Muraresku, author of The Immortality Key, his recent bestseller inspired by my book, *Breaking Open the Head*. Then art and literature, dance and theater would be elaborated or degraded forms of the original impulse to reach the "other worlds" through trance and ritual. Perhaps modern culture and faith-based religion is a short-term experiment within the larger context of shamanism and its untold millennia of continuity: an experiment in turning away from actual visionary knowledge in favor of cathartic spectacles, symbolic codes, and the mimetic techniques of literature and film; in substituting personal knowledge of sacred realities with faith, and finally, in the secularized West, extinguishing faith entirely in favor of nonbelief in any spiritual dimension of human existence. The "rediscovery” of shamanism is not just a New Age phenomenon. The Western world has made repeated attempts to understand shamanism, often seeking to reduce it to simple quackery. The process of forgetting and rediscovering, reevaluating and dismissing, shamanism has continued for centuries. From the sixteenth through the eighteenth century, explorers in Siberia and the New World wrote reports of jugglers, conjurers, and tribal sorcerers that were avidly studied by the intelligentsia of Europe. The tone of these accounts ranged from sneering attacks on fraudulent practices and shrill denunciations of devil worshiping, to objective and even compassionate studies of shamanic healing practices. <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVUsuu3CAM_ZrJLhHhEWDB4qpSfyPi4WToTSAFcm…> 18th Century illustration of a Siberian shaman, fascinating for Europeans “While some Europeans continued to ridicule what they considered public trickery and ignoble credulity, others began taking shamanistic practices very seriously,” writes the historian Gloria Flaherty in her book *Shamanism and the Eighteenth Century*. “Shamanism seemed to them to epitomize a grand confluence of ageless human activities the world over.” Flaherty suggests the evolving cult of the genius, the magic powers of enchantment attributed to Mozart or Goethe, arose out of Europe’s fascination with shamans. <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVUsuu3CAM_ZrJLhHPAAsWV5X6GxEBJ0NvAimQez…> The archetypal figure of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment, Goethe amassed information on magic and ghosts, rejected Newton’s mechanistic view of nature, believing that nature was animated by spiritual forces. "We all walk in mysteries,” the poet and scientist wrote to a friend. "We are surrounded by an atmosphere about which we still know nothing at all. We do not know what stirs in it and how it is connected with our intelligence. This much is certain, under particular conditions the antennae of our souls are able to reach out beyond their physical limitations.” Goethe incorporated many aspects of the shaman archetype — contact with ghosts during Walpurgisnacht, drug-induced trance, journeys into the world of the dead, etcetera — into the figure of Faust, the modern magician. In the nineteenth century, Romantic poets like Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Edgar Allan Poe, and Percy Bysshe Shelley obsessively explored their dreams as a bridge between the unconscious and conscious mind. "I should much wish, like the Indian Vishnu, to float about along an infinite ocean cradled in the flower of the Lotos, and wake once in a million years for a few minutes — just to know I was going to sleep a million years more,” wrote Coleridge, whose most famous poem, “Kubla Khan,” was reconstructed from an opium revery. <https://email.mg2.substack.com/c/eJxVUtuOrSAM_Zrtmwa5CD7wMDnJ-Q3DpbrJVnAAZ2…> Like shamans, the Romantic poets were practical technicians who investigated their own dreams and trance states, using drugs among other methods to probe the far reaches of the mind. They trained themselves to produce hypnagogic imagery — the semi-controllable hallucinations that can rise up just at the edge of sleep. Thomas De Quincey, who founded the modern genre of drug testimony with *Confessions of an English Opium-Eater*, described these visions as "heraldries painted on darkness.” The dream lyricism of the Romantics was an act of resistance to rational empiricism and the Industrial Revolution. While the Romantics sought to linger in their dreamworlds, the Modernists explored the moment of awakening as the model for a new type of consciousness that could fuse rational and irrational processes. For writers like Marcel Proust, James Joyce, and Virginia Woolf, the effort made by the sleeper to awake from the dream served as a metaphor for the disconnect between the progressive scientific and social thought of their era, and the primordial, ritualistic slaughter of the First World War. "History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake,” announces Stephen Daedalus, near the beginning of *Ulysses*, a book that includes a one-hundred-page play that takes place in "Night Town,” a transcript of a semi-coherent nightmare or ghost trip that reads like it was dreamt by the book itself. *In Search of Lost Time* begins with Marcel Proust's protagonist lying in his bed, sorting himself out from confused and vivid dreams of the past. Proust's opening reveals the moment of waking up as a mysticaltransgression between the self and the not-self: .* . . when I awoke in the middle of the night, not knowing* *where I was, I could not even be sure at first who I was; I had* *only the most rudimentary sense of existence, such as may* *lurk and flicker in the depths of an animal’s consciousness; I* *was more destitute than the cave-dweller; but then the mem-* *ory — not yet of the place where I was, but of various other* *places where I had lived and might now very possibly be —* *would come like a rope let down from heaven to draw me up* *out of the abyss of not-being, from which I never could have* *escaped by myself: in a flash I would traverse centuries of civi-* *lization, and out of a blurred glimpse of oil-lamps, then of* *shirts with turned-down collars, would gradually piece to-* *gether the original components of my ego.* Each night, Proust's narrator journeys from psychic dissolution to self-possession, from dismemberment to remembrance. The image of a "rope let down from heaven" is akin to the shamanic motif of a ladder from the sky, leading between this world and the other realms. The vast undersea kingdom of sleep called into question the solidity of the waking reality: “Perhaps the immobility of the things that surround us is forced upon them by our conviction that they are themselves and not anything else, by the immobility of our conception of them.” The sickness that exiled Proust to a cork-lined room, out of contact with other human beings, in a kind of living afterlife, was like the shaman’s initiatory sickness and nervous disorder, his celibacy and his compulsion to separate from his tribe while exploring the spirit realms. The Modernist writers and artists, consciously or not, borrowed elements from the shamanic archetype. Like tribal shamans, the artists saw themselves, in Ezra Pound’s phrase, as “the antennae of the race.” In a secular culture, they were the ones who journeyed into the land of the dead, who crafted images of an elusive sublime, who went into ecstatic states of inspiration. They believed their icons and testaments, like magic fetishes, contained the power to heal the culture’s spiritual maladies. Writers like Gertrude Stein, Tristan Tzara, or James Joyce explored private languages or languages explicitly made out of nonsense — similar to the shaman’s common practice of glossolalia, speaking in tongues, during trance. The shaman’s songs were taught to him by the spirits; the chants of the Modernist poet were expressions of alienation from a dehumanized and demystified world. Fwd: What's Your Money Doing Tonight?

Community bank depositors can be pretty sure theirs is supporting local businesses on their respective Main Streets. Unlike their Wall Street counterparts, community banks are often owned and operated by members of the local community who understand the needs of their neighbors and are well-equipped to make lending decisions that benefit local consumers and producers. Put simply, big banks *remove* capital from communities while community banks *circulate* it, invigorating the local economy. Community Banks like Lee Bank, Salisbury Bank and Trust, and Pittsfield Cooperative Bank are almost like bond investors in the local community. But this is what we should be doing because the capital we’re leveraging was built up over years and years from deposit (funding) and lending (interest income) activity here in the Berkshires. All of us also take this a step further and invest tremendously in our employees so they feel good about their employer and their employment situation and in turn have the confidence to spend some of their discretionary or non-discretionary income locally. Chuck Leach, President and CEO of Lee Bank On Thursday, February 11th at 2 PM EST, the Schumacher Center for a New Economics and BerkShares, Inc. will host a virtual Community Banking Roundtable <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> with presidents Jay Anderson of Pittsfield Cooperative Bank, Rick Cantele of Salisbury Bank and Trust Company, and Chuck Leach of Lee Bank to highlight the role and defining characteristics of community banks. The speakers represent the three banks that partner with BerkShares Inc <http://www.berkshares.org>. to distribute the local currency throughout the Berkshire region. These banks’ scale and focus encourage and facilitate the partnership. This conversation will be moderated by Alice Maggio, former director of BerkShares, Inc., a corporator of Lee Bank, and member of the Schumacher Center's Board of Directors. Fwd: Invite to my new talk at the Long Now Foundation on Feb 9th
by Michel Bauwens 04 Feb '21

04 Feb '21

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Peter Leyden <peter(a)leyden.org> Date: Thu, Feb 4, 2021 at 7:00 PM Subject: Invite to my new talk at the Long Now Foundation on Feb 9th To: <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> I’ll be giving a talk version of The Transformation next week at the prestigious seminar series founded by Stewart Brand. <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> *Come to the talk version of The Transformation this coming Tuesday at The Long Now Seminar Series* I’m honored to be giving the next talk <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> in the prestigious Seminar Series for Long-term Thinking at the Long Now Foundation that will be streamed to the public this coming *Tuesday, Feb. 9th, at 5 pm Pacific*. I have attended dozens of these talks over the last 20 years featuring some of the most innovative minds in the world laying out their latest ideas. The series was founded, curated and hosted by the legendary Stewart Brand, who is now handing over the series to the next generation. I’m humbled to be the next one up. This will be the first talk I have given on the body of work that went into creating The Transformation <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…>, a series of six stories recently published in Medium that tell the largely positive story of America and the world from 2020 to 2050. Those of you on this newsletter are aware of that series, which you can review below. This new talk version of The Transformation will make a compelling case that we are heading into a series of tech booms that will drive a world-historical economic boom and lead to a societal transformation that eventually will be understood as the beginning of civilization change by the end of the century. I’ll lay out the argument, using data and infographics, that we could largely solve many of our daunting challenges like climate change through the course of The Transformation. Consider watching my optimistic take on what lies ahead in the next several decades, streamed live on *Tuesday, Feb. 9th at 5 pm PST*, and join in the live Q&A after the talk. The entire program <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> will last about an hour and be available a few days later as a video or audio podcast. Feel free to spread the word and invite others who might be interested in hearing someone counter the pervasive mood of despair and convince you that great progress lies just ahead. Peter Leyden Email: peter(a)leyden.org <peter(a)leyden.org?subject=The%20Transformation%20Talk> Web: peterleyden.com <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> *6/6 The civilization to emerge from The Transformation arguably will supersede that of The Enlightenment* This final story <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> in the series makes the case that The Transformation of our lifetimes will rival The Enlightenment of the 18th century, the last time we watched a new civilization emerge. All the mega-innovations of The Enlightenment that defined how the world operated for the last few centuries will be superseded by parallel mega-innovations over the course of The Transformation: digital computers, clean energies, biological production, sustainable capitalism, digital democracy and global governance. <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> *5/6 The controversial case that the 2020 election marks the cusp between a conservative & progressive era* Will the election of 2020 mark a watershed in American politics like those of 1932 or 1980? This story told from 2100 makes that case and shows how our current polarized and paralyzed politics increasingly opened up a new politics through the 2020s and beyond. Read this 5th installment <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> to see how a new majority coalition came to drive big economic changes through society and began to evolve capitalism itself. <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> *4/6 How we fully dealt with Climate Change by 2050* Can we solve climate change in the next 30 years? Yes, we can mitigate the worst effects and adapt our society to thrive through the coming century if we mobilize quickly and scale the technologies already available. That's the story told in this 4th installment <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> of the series that explains from the year 2100 how America turned the corner on climate change from 2020 to 2050. <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> *3/6 The Long Booms of Infotech & Biotech thru to 2050* The next generation of Infotech, like AI, and Biotech, like genetic engineering, are the stuff of many dystopian scenarios of the future. But these powerful tools could augment the capabilities of humans in many positive ways and could also bring some welcome surprises - like an explosion of innovation. This 3rd story <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> in the series lays out how it could all play out. <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> *2/6 Overview story of whole narrative told from 2100* If someone was going to read just one story out of the six in this series, then this overview story <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> would be it. This is the one that introduces a character from the year 2100 who looks back on his past life, and our future. He gives an overview of the key developments from 2020 to 2050 that will be covered in the other stories in more depth. <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> *1/6 The Introduction of whole project told by me in 2020* The series opened up with the introduction <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> in my voice from 2020. That story explains the whole project and why a positive scenario for America and the world is so important right now. I also make the case that most people are underestimating the positive potential of a dozen driving forces that I call The Inexorables that will play out in the coming decades and could help solve our biggest challenges. I also acknowledge <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> the 25 remarkable innovators who I interviewed in depth for this series. <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> *The Series landing page in Medium for all 6 stories* The series has a landing page <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> where all the stories are now published. All six stories can be read sequentially on that landing page and work together to tell a comprehensive story from the year 2100 of the many ways that America changed from 2020 to 2050 and how the world made great progress on solving the challenges of our times. The navigation at the top of the page helps you step through each story in the right order. Anyone can get oriented from there. <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> *A new PeterLeyden.com website for what I'm doing now* I rebuilt from scratch my entire website at peterleyden.com <https://peterleyden.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b308d0c8a5fb414451480…> to help explain what I'm doing around The Transformation as well as all the various threads of my work life heading into 2021. There you can see what I am doing with my writing, speaking, interviewing and consulting. It will also be a hub that collects much of what I have been doing for the last 25 years. Check it out now and come back as I add material in the coming year. To: <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Global Innovation Coop Summit *Back to Businessas usual!* * Global Innovation Coop Summit's first edition.* The first edition of the Global Innovation Coop Summit took place on December 30th, 2020, and was completely digital and free. The 90 minutes live event was designed to be a space dedicated to the leaders and experts of cooperatives from all sectors internationally, to share, discuss, learn and build a more cooperative, inclusive plural economy. The main goal of the Global Innovation Coop Summit was to bring to the global cooperative movement new trends in the areas of innovation, leadership, and technology; thus preparing the cooperative sector for the new challenges that we are facing and will continue to in the coming years. The event's first presenter was *Navi Radjou*, speaker, author, and Innovation & Leadership Advisor, and he brought to the table the theme “Towards a frugal economy”. Drawing on concrete examples from different sectors and regions of the world, *Navi Radjou* identified the crucial changes to be made - in terms of culture, structure, and leadership - which allowed the spectators to understand and fully integrate into the generating “frugal economy” profit while contributing to the “triple regeneration” (individual, social and ecological). After Mr. Radjou's speech, the stage was set for *Nathan Schneider*, author, and professor of media studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder, who presented the idea of a shared agenda for shared ownership. Nathan discussed how we can think beyond old habits and how to develop policies and strategies that will put cooperation at the center of the global economy. The final part of the event was a roundtable coordinated by *Mr. Jean-Louis Bancel*, president of Cooperatives Europe, with Mr. Radjou, Mr. Schneider and 3 other participants: *Samara Araujo*, the Innovation Coordinator in Organization of Brazilian Cooperatives (OCB), Brazil; *Lorenzo Novaro*, the Project coordinator in Cooperatives Europe, Brussels; and* Mr. Eric Brat*, the Director of the Alphonse and Dorimène Desjardins International Institute for Cooperatives, at HEC Montréal. The roundtable supported an important discussion on how the cooperative business model can reinvent a more efficient, agile, socially inclusive, and ecologically beneficial economy. It also included a dialogue on how technology contributes to social innovation and the leaders' visions of the post-COVID-19 new normal for cooperatives and their capacity to innovate. *Global Innovation Coop Summit was viewed by 458 people from 82 different countries.* *We hope to see you in the second digital edition of Global Innovation Coop Summit on the 20nd of April, 2021!* * Obtain more information on how to participate here:* <https://u8415165.ct.sendgrid.net/ls/click?upn=23rQKKzF86n-2FKlni5fZeUDemfaa…> Global Innovation Coop Summit Sintra , Lisbon , Unsubscribe <https://u8415165.ct.sendgrid.net/asm/unsubscribe/?user_id=8415165&data=NR7E…> - Unsubscribe Preferences <https://u8415165.ct.sendgrid.net/asm/?user_id=8415165&data=-l3vszrsx_ndG4T2…> - Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Should Illinois follow its lead? By Marc J. Lane Let's consider democratizing capital in Illinois and putting the public in control of its own future. [image: money] Getty images. ------------------------------ For just the second time in a century, a people-powered coalition successfully overcame the clout of big finance when California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill late in 2019 allowing the state's municipalities and counties to organize their own nonprofit lending institutions. Their mission: to hold public funds and deploy them – along with money they’ll be eligible to borrow at low rates from the Federal Reserve – for socially and environmentally impactful purposes. Before long, such banks in California and elsewhere will operate free of the pressure commercial megabanks face to fund outsized executive pay packages while delivering healthy investment returns to their shareholders. Until California acted North Dakota has been the only state that operates a public bank wholly backed by the deposit of government funds. The bank was founded by community activists in 1919 to protect wheat farmers in the state, then a banking desert, from predatory out-of-state lenders as well as grain dealers who suppressed grain prices. Today the bank offers residents and businesses low-cost services including checking accounts and loans. More important, it funds economic development initiatives in partnership with other local banks. North Dakota's bank turns a significant profit – more profit, in fact, than Goldman Sachs -- which is plowed back into the state's coffers and offsets the financial burden its taxpayers, without the bank, would bear. So everyone benefits from the government funds that would otherwise be deposited each year in distant commercial institutions. California’s cities have deposited billions of taxpayer dollars in Wall Street's biggest banks every year which too often have been invested them in private prisons, Saudi Arabian oil, derivative securities and other assets deemed antithetical to the state’s values and policies. Worse yet, the nation’s largest commercial banks, as a group, have justifiably earned a reputation for exploiting unwary consumers. But now, thanks to the efforts of a diverse group of labor unions, climate justice groups and civil rights organizations, cities and counties there will be able to launch their own banks to leverage public funds for local impact. Although public banks will be barred from competing with commercial banks at the retail level, they are expected to make low-cost loans for renewable energy, affordable housing, small business expansion, transit and other public needs, cutting the financing costs of infrastructure projects in half. Similarly, Chicago, Cook County, and other cities and counties throughout Illinois might benefit from state-sanctioned public banks which could invest in infrastructure, housing, schools and other worthy projects, including those that private banks decline to fund. Public banks could also unleash the state’s medical and recreational marijuana industry, denied access to private banks because the possession or sale of cannabis remains illegal under federal law. Opponents of public banks have raised legitimate concerns about political influence which could lead to corruption, self-dealing and risky lending. But there's no reason community stakeholders can't actively participate in the governance of a public bank ensuring the accountability the public deserves. Public banks inform a new and worthwhile discussion about sustainability and growth. Let's consider democratizing capital in Illinois and putting the public in control of its own future. *Marc J.
