Who would have thought that a tilt toward Conventional Worlds politics in the US would become a cause of celebration, or at least relief? But we’ll take it: the best path to a GT passes through Policy Reform. Thanks to the 60+ of you who contributed to the September GTN discussion* Universal Basic Income: Has the Time Come?* It was an astonishingly animated, informative, and incisive exchange that left me, for one, with a lot to mull over. We have now gathered a representative subset of the comments into a GTI Forum geared to a general readership that is now live on our homepage <http://www.greattransition.org/> . Please share it, republish it, blog it. Our December GTN discussion will examine the relationship of two big ideas: the Anthropocene and the Great Transition. I will kick things off on soon with a brief—and perhaps provocative—essay, entitled “Interrogating the Anthropocene: Truth and Fallacy.” Please post news on the GTN Bulletin Board <https://greattransition.org/bulletin-board/> (submit info to jcohn(a)tellus.org) The latest announcements include: • A job opening in sustainability policy and planning at Tufts • Recent articles, documentaries, and webinars • New books by Julie Schor, Jennie Stephens, Maurie Cohen, Stephen Purdey, and Joe Ravetz • Publication of *The New Systems Reader: Alternatives to a Failed Economy*, edited by Gus Speth, with contributions from a number of GTNers (including yours truly). Fwd: All Struggles Are Connected

The gathering sought to probe the roots of the crisis and in doing so, better access where to put our collective energies and resources to create change. The title of the gathering was, “The Esoteric Dimensions of Climate Change.” We relied on transformational thinkers Arthur Zajonc <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> and Otto Scharmer <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> to guide the discussion. Among those attending was Mehul Sangham of Culture Hack Labs <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…>. He described a process in which Culture Hack intervened in a conflict between those who wished to expand the Mexico City airport and advocates for protecting the remaining wetland of Lake Texcoco, the ancient lake drained over the course of centuries to make room for development of the ever-sprawling city. It was a classic conflict between environmentalists and populist developers seeking much-needed jobs for a growing population. Both sides were right in their own ways. Culture Hack’s approach was to listen deeply to the language of each side and to abstract the emergent narrative. Then, with the data in hand, they sought to uncover a transformative narrative that could move the discussion beyond the intractable conflict. In the end they introduced the phrase, *Yo prefiero el lago,* (I prefer the lake). People on both sides of the issue recalled family outings by the lake– fond memories connected to people they loved, their youth, and their community. It did not involve rhetoric about the destruction of nature. It was not a catalogue of the number of jobs gained or increases in municipal revenue. It was a new narrative that reframed the debate. When the airport expansion referendum came forward for a vote, the lake won. During the gathering at the Schumacher Center’s Library, Mehul and Martin Kirk proposed applying Cultural Hack’s methods to a transformative narrative for the climate crisis. Their inquiry soon expanded to include analysis of the Black Lives Matter movement and the COVID-19 pandemic. They asked: what is it at this point in Earth’s history and human history that brings together these multiple crises – social, environmental, economic, and health? What is the new emerging narrative that can help us transform these crises and collectively transition to a healing path forward? We are pleased to report that Culture Hack Labs will host a series of free webinars to share its findings with the hope of building a critical community of practitioners engaged in dialogue through these times. Webinar One:* The Structural Causes of the Transition* Date:* Tuesday, 24 November 9 - 10:30 am PST / 12 - 1:30 pm EST* In this introductory webinar, our team outlines the Humanist foundations that have engendered the current moment of crisis. Specifically, we show how the story of progress has become the principle orienting narrative over the last 200 years, resulting in the rampant destruction of human and non-human life. Finally, we explore the ‘Posthuman’ as a useful framework for our own evolution. Register in advance for this webinar: Register: The Structural Causes of the Transition <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> Webinar Two: *Two Narratives of Transition: An analysis of COVID-19 & BLM* Date: *Tuesday, 1 December **9 - 10:30 am PST / 12 - 1:30 pm EST* Culture Hack collected 30 million tweets, over 150 thousand articles, and a survey of 1,600 people as a means to understand the emergent narratives of COVID-19 and BLM during the first quarter of 2020. We found two dominant narrative forms, that of individual freedom and that of collective solidarity. In this webinar we describe our methodological process and analysis of these two narrative forms. A deep dive into Narrative Forms and their Dynamics* Date:* Tuesday, 8 December **9 - 10:30 am PST / 12 - 1:30 pm EST* In the third webinar in our series, we present Culture Hack Labs’ (CHL) understanding of narrative forms and their dynamics. This framework and methodology is the result of eight years of research and development, a legacy we inherited from The Rules team. We will discuss three narrative moments, including “Fees Must Fall,” “Yo Prefiero El Lago,” and the BLM movement in the wake of George Floyd’s death. Register in advance for this webinar: Register: What are Narratives? A deep dive into Narrative Forms and their Dynamics <https://centerforneweconomics.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=69d509d1130…> Webinar Four:* Cultural Evolution & Syntropic Reframes* Date: *Tuesday, 15 December 9 - 10:30 am PST / 12 - 1:30 pm EST* In these times of unprecedented crises it is critical that we collectively develop a set of orienting coordinates that help us navigate the uncertain and complex terrain of the inevitable transition. In this final webinar in our series we share our framework for narrative evolution as a map for narrative change during the transition. Our discussion will demonstrate how we use the ‘cultural evolution framework’ to assess the evolutionary potential of frames and narrative forms while developing interventions for evolution that transcend merely message-oriented narrative actions. We will also discuss the application of this framework to differing fields such as philanthropy, design, and social technologies. Fwd: PRESS RELEASE-Finance for Biodiversity - Aligning Development Finance with Nature's Needs: Protecting Nature's Development Dividend
by Michel Bauwens 10 Nov '20

10 Nov '20

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Hazel Henderson <hazel.henderson(a)ethicalmarkets.com> Date: Tue, Nov 10, 2020 at 3:52 AM Subject: PRESS RELEASE-Finance for Biodiversity - Aligning Development Finance with Nature's Needs: Protecting Nature's Development Dividend To: Larae Long <larae.long(a)ethicalmarkets.com> Dear Esteemed Global Advisory Board and Judges Panel, Informational material below with PDF attached: *IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 00.01 GMT Monday Nov. 9* *World’s development banks endangering vulnerable ecosystems worth US$1.1 trillion/year* LONDON, Nov. 9 (F4B) – Development finance institutions (DFIs) worldwide are endangering nature worth an estimated US$1.1 trillion annually, and more than a quarter of their total US$11.2 trillion loan book is highly dependent on vulnerable ecosystems, found a study by Finance for Biodiversity (F4B), published on Wednesday. Globally, there are more than 450 development finance institutions (DFIs), which invest about US$2 trillion annually. Almost all are accountable to one or several governments, and ultimately to their citizens, and their core purpose is to facilitate sustainable development. Sustainable development is inextricably linked to nature, because of the benefits that nature provides for businesses, including sustaining the quantity and quality of air, water and soils, regulating the climate, providing pollination and pest control, and reducing the impact of natural hazards such as storms and floods. Biodiversity is declining at an unprecedented rate, however, and the drivers of these losses are intensifying. Wednesday’s report, “Aligning Development Finance with Nature’s Needs: Protecting Nature’s Development Dividend”, found that DFIs are endangering nature with an expected value of US$1.1 trillion annually. This is the first analysis to date to place a monetary value on a financial institution’s potential impact on nature. In addition, the report found that DFIs are exposing themselves to extraordinary risks by failing to account for their dependence on declining biodiversity, a “dependency risk” estimated at US$3.1 trillion. These dependencies and nature impacts are two sides of the same coin – one firm’s damage to nature can lead to financial loss for another dependent on that nature. This feedback loop shows why these biodiversity-related risks are important leading indicators of material financial risk, and why immediate action is needed to address the issue. DFIs are holding their first ever global conference on November 11-12, at the Finance in Commons Summit, convened by French President Emanuel Macron, in what should be a key moment to assess how the global DFI community is performing. “The world’s government-owned banks are meant to be at the leading edge of development finance practice, a symbol of progressive lending practices for the world’s private investors,” said Simon Zadek, chair of F4B, which produced the report. “But mostly their investments are dependent on precious, vulnerable biodiversity resources, and too often place these resources further at risk. F4B’s calculations point to the urgent need for DFIs to commit to lending practices that deliver positive nature gains.” Wednesday’s report recommended that all DFIs commit, and undertake within the next year, to publish a balance sheet-wide stress test of nature-related financial risks and impacts, and so catalyse similar action by private financial institutions and generate wider sustainable development benefits. Dependency risk refers to the extent that the financing activities of DFIs are highly dependent on nature which is already vulnerable. Almost all businesses in some way depend upon benefits from nature. For example, fishers rely on healthy stocks of fish, and many farmers on wild pollinating insects. If these ecosystem services are already vulnerable and declining, businesses are more at risk. The F4B report applied an assessment of nature dependency by economic sector, where agriculture and forestry score highly, for example. It combined this with country risk scores, according to biodiversity abundance, the strength of local environmental laws, and national resource intensity, to calculate a dollar risk value. DFIs are also putting nature at risk, for example by driving deforestation, and in doing so, are exposing themselves to tighter environmental laws, or to litigation and reputation harm. To estimate the risk DFIs pose to nature, F4B estimated the land and water footprint associated with DFI financing, and valued the resulting expected damage to biodiversity and ecosystem services, if not effectively mitigated. The report found that, by region, Asia had the highest dependency risk, reflecting the vulnerability of its remaining, high-value biodiversity, and the relatively larger DFI exposure to this region. Asia also placed the most nature at risk, reflecting the large water footprint of lending in the region. Among sectors, the report found agriculture put most nature at risk, as a key driver of land use change including deforestation, while energy and water utilities scored the highest dependency risk, reflecting their high reliance on reliable freshwater. *CHART. F4B is advancing five workstreams that create and amplify the feedback signals that increase the value of biodiversity in private and public financing decisions: - Market efficiency and innovation - Biodiversity-related liability - Bridging biodiversity policy and financial rules and behaviour - Citizen engagement and public campaigns · Responses to the COVID crisis For more information, visit www.f4b-initiative.net. Grab an apple and munch on what we've been up to. *Resilient food systems* <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> Are you hoping to or already leading initiatives to grow, share, sell and consume more sustainable foods in your local context? The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations wrote this handbook for “sustainable food systems innovators” like you. Sustainable food systems are fundamental to ensuring that future generations are food secure and eat healthy diets. To transition towards sustainability, many food system activities must be reconstructed. Creating change requires innovation and complex skill sets. Open Food Network is highlighted as one of the tools making sustainable food systems possible. Check out what else is available here <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> ! We're excited and honoured to have been recognised for our contribution to community resilience this year, as a finalist for the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning Community Resilience Award <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…>, in the Victorian Regional Achievement and Community Awards. You can also vote for us in the People's Choice Awards <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> ! But of course anything we do is so grounded in the community we work with. And we are in awe of the many food enterprises in our community whose resilience in the face of 2020 is inspiring. So thank you, to all those in our community who model every day what resilience looks like. *Open Food Network Global news* Open Food Network is a truly global project. We've continued to grow this year, and there are now Open Food Network local instances in 20 countries, with more in development. While we're in constant conversation with our global community, we also get together in-person each year to work through strategic decisions and tricky problems that are easier to sort out with lots of talking and planning. This year, no travel meant that we were able to reimagine our global gathering to be bigger, better, and more inclusive than ever! It was an amazing opportunity to spend significant time with the richly diverse community that makes up our global network. We heard from one of Open Food Network Brasil's leaders, Thomaz, a food systems academic based in Belo Horizonte. He shared that the previously famed food policies in their region have been largely eroded under the current government, and reminded us all to make as much progress in food systems when a window of opportunity presents itself - as it currently is with COVID-19. Rafat, in Open Food Network Jordan, talked about challenges for farmers and his vision of global trade enabled by Open Food Network. Davie, from Open Food Network Ireland, helped us understand more about holacratic governance. Hector and Hernan, who lead Open Food Network Colombia, shared their wealth of experience in co-operatives, and explained the unique challenges facing farmers in their region. We will be releasing videos from the gathering soon, and we hope you'll draw the same inspiration and solace from the fact that all over the world, people are working collaboratively to build a new food system with open source global commons at its core. *New team members!* <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> Meet our new team members, David and Sue :) David Cook is our new software developer. He grew up in regional Victoria before moving to Melbourne for university. He volunteered with Open Food Network in 2013 and we are excited to have him back with us helping build platforms to facilitate more local, independent food distribution. Susan Earl, our new UX designer hails from New Zealand and has worked as a UX designer for corporate and not-for-profits. She is also a film maker, illustrator and sessional teacher and assessor for the RMIT Masters of Animation program for the past 15 years! She is creating engaging screen experiences for us. *Thank you, Danni* We have said goodbye this month to one of our much loved team members, Danni, as she steps back from Open Food Network. Danni has been with us for five years, and has brought immeasurable expertise and care to our work. She has led development of projects and processes both in Australia and with our global team. For most of her time with us she was a volunteer, and Open Food Network has always been balanced alongside other demanding roles. We’re excited for the space to explore interests and ideas that having just one job (!) will bring her, but we will miss her insight, curiosity and the pleasure of working together. *Software Updates* *Release of the month* Top of the release list for Sept/Oct is the long awaited feature allowing Hub shopfronts to make customer names visible in their Producer reports via SHOP PREFERENCES <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…>. If this option is selected by the Hub, supplying Producers can now run reports including hub customer names to assist with packing and fulfilling orders. *For the full list of releases this month, click below.* *Christmas is coming* Interested in learning about how to create hampers or gift vouchers for your customers at Christmas? This great project is working towards creating a circular school food system that remakes connections between schools and farmers, to increase the flow of healthy, locally grown food to school communities and support a vibrant local and regional food economy. If you are a producer on the Open Food Network and would be interested in learning more about creating connections with local schools, please register your interest here <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> . *Open Food Connect* Are you a producer with surplus produce? Or are you looking for new hubs and places to sell on the Open Food Network? Are you a hub that is looking to stock some flour but don't know where to get it? Are you trying to connect with producers but not sure what's in your area? Reach out to the Open Food Network and our brokering service will help match supply and demand to get food where it needs to go. So far we've helped: - Connect hubs with new dairy and beef producers - Connect producers with greens and flour looking for new hubs to sell through - Connect a community food enterprise looking for a chickpea supplier If you are looking to sell, procure, or just want more info - get in touch! Connect now <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> *Catch up* Last week, Serenity Hill talked regenerative agriculture with TEDx PermaQueer, covering the complex barriers and the pathways for transitioning to regenerative agriculture such as collaborations between consumers, farmers and food enterprises, solidarity and commons based approaches to land and capital. Watch it here <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> . *Open Food Networkers in the news:* The Tasmanian Producers Collective are using Open Food Network to open hubs across the state <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> . McIvor Farm Foods switched to Open Food Network and replaced all of their lost wholesale and hospitality sales with direct to customer retail. They've now been able to open a new farmgate shop and butcher <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> ! North Arm Farms spoke to their local media <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> about their awesome collaborative work in the Nambucca Valley, and how they're using Open Food Network to build food sovereignty. Food Connect in Brisbane feature in ABC Landline's video <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> about farmers coming together to sell their produce and customers getting to know their farmers and where their food comes from. *Other food systems news:* We need to be building food systems that address the inequities in our current system. Check out Sovereign Soil Farm <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…>, who are currently raising funds to do just that! They're starting a majority Blak and queer owned farm, and they need your support getting started <https://openfoodnetwork.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6752bbf142dc0ebe…> . *Support us* Our software is built and maintained with a huge amount of volunteer labour and a small amount of funding. So counting on your participation and spreading the word! Warm greetings! Brid ----------- *INVITATION TO PERMANENT PEOPLES TRIBUANL (PPT) – HEARING BERLIN * “As Co-Convenors of the 45th session of the Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal, we are aware of the challenges raised by the strategies of resistance and the alternatives that migrant and refugee peoples are building, despite their exclusion in “no-rights zones”. We will continue working on the demands formulated during the PPT hearing process and strengthening our alliances to converge towards a new era of transnational action and solidarity”. This serves as an *INVITATION *to participate in the Permanent People’s Tribunal (PPT) Berlin Hearing – which takes place on *Friday October 23-Sunday, October 25.* The PPT Jurors will hear testimonies and Reports from organisations and experts from different countries in Europe – Germany, Britain, Greece, Italy, Netherlands and Spain - chronicling the conditions of racist exclusion on the ground, the root causes of forced displacement (failed extractivist economies, climate change, war), and the global restructuring of labour under globalization. The PPT Hearing will also focus the resistance and struggles to defend and reclaim human rights for all and an end to Camps, and closed militarized borders. The focus of this Hearing is on the *Right to Health* and the access to Health care for Migrant and Refugee Peoples in Europe. Fwd: Sign up to the first Protopia Lab workshop by 23 October

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Smart CSOs Lab <do-not-reply(a)smart-csos.org> Date: Sun, Oct 18, 2020 at 10:39 PM Subject: Sign up to the first Protopia Lab workshop by 23 October To: <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Our new project is a space to address polarisation in society, pave the way for global cooperation, and upgrade our civilisation before it's too late. View this email in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/70fab14a4942/the-protopia-lab-website-launch-3317614?e=3…> <https://smart-csos.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5cf566bc194b8a0b681cee…> October 2020 Dear Michel, *This is a reminder. To sign up to our first Protopia Lab workshop you need to fill in this questionnaire <https://smart-csos.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5cf566bc194b8a0b681cee…> by Friday, 23 October.* Are you worried about the spiral of polarisation in our societies, and the dysfunctional public conversation around our most pressing issues? Do you have the sense that we are increasingly living in very different realities and ideological bubbles that prevent us from solving problems together? We believe the time has come to break out of our echo chambers, start a fresh and undogmatic conversation about how we can cooperate effectively and upgrade our civilisation to help prevent its collapse. If these topics speak to you, consider joining the Protopia Lab <https://smart-csos.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5cf566bc194b8a0b681cee…>. We are delighted to finally announce that we are hosting our first workshop (via Zoom) with an initial group of pioneers on Friday, 27 November 2020 from 2pm to 7pm CET. This will be followed by two follow-up sessions (also via Zoom) on 11 December and 15 January. What to Expect [image: The Protopia Lab logo] The Protopia Lab was inspired by the idea that we can only tackle the biggest problems of our times, including climate change, if we can stop the spiralling polarisation across our societies. Only a deep and empathic understanding of the dynamics that led us to our current societal divide will allow us to lay the foundations for renewed trust, and a new social contract. However, this isn’t just something we can do by talking or theorising. We also have to learn how to have conversations with those who hold different values to us – whether in our organisations or in day-to-day life. That’s why we’ve designed this workshop to be *experiential, exploratory and experimental*. You will learn about the neuroscience, psychology and physiology of polarisation. We’ll explore which models and cultural frameworks can help us make sense of the complex ideological realities that lead to polarisation. Through group conversations, mindfulness practices and simple mediation processes, you will leave with a greater awareness of your own cognitive biases and build your capacity for seeing issues from multiple perspectives. How to Join We would like to hear from activists and other change agents who deeply care about workable strategies for tackling the climate crisis and believe that we need to think polarisation and ecological transition together. We especially encourage people with *non-orthodox* perspectives and curious minds to join. If you would like to apply to participate, please take 10 minutes of your time to fill in this questionnaire <https://smart-csos.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5cf566bc194b8a0b681cee…> *by 23 October*. We would like to make this the most enjoyable and useful experience for everyone and would therefore like to know about your motivations and interest in this project. We will select a group of up to 25 participants and confirm participation by 1 November. You are requested to commit to full participation during all three sessions. The process - Main workshop on *Friday, 27 November from 2pm to 7pm CET* - Approx. 2 hours of reading to complete for the next session - Follow-up session 1 on *Friday, 11 December from 3pm to 5pm CET* - Approx. 2 hours of reading to complete for the next session - Follow-up session 2 on *Friday, 15 January from 3pm to 5pm CET* For this project, we are grateful to partner with and receive financial support from European Youth Forum <https://smart-csos.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5cf566bc194b8a0b681cee…>. We will ask confirmed participants to make a small voluntary donation to help cover the remaining costs. We would greatly appreciate it if you could share this invitation with people who might be interested, and especially with people who might bring along fresh perspectives and diverse viewpoints. If you have questions about the project, please contact Micha <michael(a)smart-csos.org>.
