---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Post Growth Institute <info(a)postgrowth.org> Date: Tue, Sep 29, 2020 at 11:03 PM Subject: Hope emerges when we act (not vice versa) To: Michel <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> This month, the lives of some of our team here at the PGI have been turned upside down by the unprecedented wildfires across the western US. [image: Full Circle by the PGI] <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> Dear Michel, How can we remain hopeful in the face of vast challenges? How do we focus on the positive without glossing over the struggles of others? This month, the lives of some of our team here at the Post Growth Institute (PGI) have been turned upside down by the unprecedented wildfires across the western US. It's in such moments that we find often answers to these difficult questions. In our September newsletter, we *take heart from the hopeful words* of 23-year-old activist Malala Yousafzai, and share the story of how our own Rogue Valley *community has stepped up to support its most vulnerable members* in the aftermath of those devastating fires. Plus, discover how *public services are making a global comeback* after a period of privatization, and join the Progressive International's urgent summit to *reclaim our shared future*. In solidarity, Inspiration: Cultivating hope in challenging times [image: Malala Yousafzai] <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> "Change is possible, but that requires us to act." Malala Yousafzai is no stranger to adversity. In this video <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…>, the Pakistani activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner shares how she cultivates hope in challenging times. "I believe that change does not occur itself, somebody has to step out and say something and do something, and that's how change happens." * Watch Malala Yousafzai share words of hope during challenging times <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…>.* Reimagining Economics: Reclaim our shared future <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> Formed in May 2020, the Progressive International's mission is to unite, organize, and mobilize progressive forces in a common front. It includes groups that represent millions of people around the world. Earlier this month, the PI's inaugural summit <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> set out to reclaim our shared future by mapping our current crisis and strengthening our planetary front. Catch up on YouTube as the likes of Nanjala Nyabola, Aruna Roy, Naomi Klein, and Yanis Varoufakis call on progressive forces everywhere to act quickly and decisively. *Watch the inaugural summit of the Progressive International* <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…>. Reorienting Organizations: The return of truly public services [image: Re-municipilization] <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> All over the world, vital public services are being brought back into public hands after a period of privatization, during which profit was put before social need. This interactive database <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> maps the emergence and flourishing of efficient public utilities and services that provide livelihoods in sustainable, democratic, and affordable ways. *Explore the International Database of De-privatised Public Services.* <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> Revitalizing Communities: Building back better in the aftermath of Southern Oregon's Almeda Fire [image: Ashland Bike Brigade] <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> Community is so powerful. As wildfires tore through the Rogue Valley, many residents were left without water and electricity – and some even lost their homes. Community groups quickly coalesced <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> to support people unable to leave their homes. In less than a week, they assembled over 170 builders and 50 partners to build equitable community- and family-owned housing for those in need. *Read How Southern Oregon Communities are Working to Build Back Better After the Almeda Fire.* <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> [image: PGI logo] <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> [image: Facebook] <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> [image: Twitter] <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> [image: Website] <https://postgrowth.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dcc08996cc57fb1c3f5af6…> Want to change how you receive these emails? As Mike Davis wrote “There's only one cure consistent with global social justice. Fwd: [bgcon] "Radical Care: Embracing Feminist Finance"

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Krystian Woznicki <kw(a)berlinergazette.de> Date: Fri, Oct 2, 2020 at 2:49 PM Subject: [bgcon] "Radical Care: Embracing Feminist Finance" To: <digi-yards(a)berlinergazette.de> Hi, our neighbors at the Amsterdam-based Institute of Network Cultures and Amateur Cities have published the Feminist Finance Zine. It's timely title is ‘Radical Care: Embracing Feminist Finance.’ And it is now available for free download (all details below). Spread the word! Best wishes, Krystian (for the BG team) Amateur Cities (https://amateurcities.com) and the Institute of Network Cultures (https://networkcultures.org/) are proud to present a feminist finance zine titled ‘Radical Care: Embracing Feminist Finance.’ It is a cooperative future-thinking effort from the MoneyLab network, a collective of artists, designers, researchers, geeks and activists dedicated to the task of experimenting with more equitable, diverse, and sustainable futures for finance and economy. The zine is a diverse collection of voices organized in three types of contributions: quickfire interviews (short reactions to big questions), double interviews (conversational long reads), and artworks (projects addressing discussed subjects visually). Today we live in a world that is dominated by an economic system that is global, competitive, and centred around a rational and egoistic vision of the human (homo economicus). In this publication we asked ourselves and over twenty contributors how we can embrace different values focusing on locality, cooperation, and caring. Can an affective and compassionate vision of the human get us closer to homo reciprocans or cooperans? How can we break out of the crisis of imagination, and as Lana Swartz and Martin Zeilinger propose, move towards the crisis of implementation? How we can navigate the relations of exchange and trust between humans and machines, but also, our relationship with the environment. Can we finally not only recognize the climate catastrophe, but also find ways to act against it, through an economic lens, mindful of not reproducing patriarchal and colonial histories? As Denise Thwaites notes, this work starts with careful and respectful listening to voices that have long been silenced. In the words of Ruth Catlow and Reijer Hendrikse: history is not over, we are just beginning! Dear community, In this week's post <https://platformdesigntoolkit.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e272a9d50c…>, Stina and Simone are condensing months of research around the impacts of the new risk landscape on the perspective of platform-ecosystem organizing. In the post, the authors first outline how multi-scale risk factors require a multi scale response, explore the impact of emerging narrative threads and then end up providing a dual hypothesis in confronting the radical changes: a different approach to measuring value and a profound chance in epistemic, in search of the right mindset for the 21st century. ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Julie Simon <juliecauliergrice(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Sep 14, 2020 at 5:14 PM Subject: Robin Murray Living Library To: Frances Murray <francesmurray(a)blueyonder.co.uk> Dear Friends of Robin, We are delighted to announce the launch of the Robin Murray Living Library <http://www.robinmurray.co.uk/> which you can now access here: www.robinmurray.co.uk This site has been created by the Trellis Foundation <https://www.trellisfoundation.co.uk/>, set up in memory of Robin to continue his life’s work in social and environmental innovation. As part of this project we have digitised and made available hundreds of unpublished papers, as well as articles, reports and other publications, dating from the 1960s to his final works in 2016. Robin made important contributions to the fields of fair trade, social innovation, environmentalism and local economic development as well as being one of the most influential socialist thinkers of the last 40 years, developing his ideas through practical projects and experiments. He also played a significant role as a policymaker, first as Chief Economic Advisor to the Greater London Council in the early 1980s and later in the 1990s in shaping London’s waste strategy. In this Living Library, we have included papers and publications, photos, and reflections from colleagues and friends on his work on multinationals, the labour process in Brighton, economics at IDS, developing a new education system for the Seychelles in the early 1980s, producing the London Industrial Strategy at the GLC, TWIN and Twin Trading, Fordism and flexible specialisation, SEEDS, pioneering an alternative waste strategy for London, greening homes and re-imagining the NHS at the Design Council, social innovation methods at the Young Foundation, supporting co-operatives in South Korea, reviewing the co-operative movement for Co-ops UK and much more. We would like to thank the many people who have helped in the making of this website, either through written contributions or donations to the Trellis Foundation. In particular, we would like to give special thanks to the Scurrah Wainwright Charity <http://www.wainwrighttrusts.org.uk/swc.html>, the Barry Amiel and Norman Melburn Trust <http://www.amielandmelburn.org.uk/> and the Lipman-Miliband Trust <http://www.lipman-miliband.org.uk/> for their generous support. Finally, we hope that you will enjoy visiting the site and please do spread the word - share it with someone you think will like it or tweet or post about it via social media. Fwd: Do you want to sign?Towards a people and planet-oriented (digital) transition in Europe: Platform cooperatives and their fundamental role in the context of recovery

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: <nicole.alix(a)coopdescommuns.org> Date: Tue, Sep 15, 2020 at 8:33 PM Subject: Do you want to sign?Towards a people and planet-oriented (digital) transition in Europe: Platform cooperatives and their fundamental role in the context of recovery To: <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Dear Michel, Digital transition figures high on the EU policy agenda (Digital Europe and the digital single market, EU Recovery Plan, Cohesion Policy, etc.). At the same time, concerns are expressed on how gigantic players such as Amazon, Uber or AirBnb are about to monetize and “platformize” almost any aspect of people’s lives, including the most sensitive ones: personal opinions, daily activities, the functioning of democracies, the autonomy of states and the EU. Other digital start-ups follow their example. Some alternatives, so-called « platform cooperatives », have emerged to develop alternative models in many sectors : provision of food, mobility, care, support of SMEs, tourism, IT, … They differentiate themselves through democratic governance, territorial links, a fair sharing of the created value, a particular care for users’ wellbeing, ethical use of data, specific attention to enhancing social utility and environmental protection, inter-cooperation between projects. They have proven their value for the resilience of territories once again in the framework of the covid19 crisis. An increasing number of cities and regions are developing partnerships with these platform coop initiatives. However, a lot remains to be done so that platform coops can compete on a level playing field with dominant platforms and are able to attain sustainable economic models. The EU Recovery Plan and related policies are an important lever of change also in the platform economy *This is the reason why the following organisations, decided to elaborate a position paper, here attached. * *This paper is open to the signature of other organisations. You will find the list of organisations following* *https://coopdescommuns.org/fr/platform-cooperatives-and-their-role-in-the-context-of-recovery/* <https://coopdescommuns.org/fr/platform-cooperatives-and-their-role-in-the-c…> NB : This paper has been written by the Co-communs working group, acting as an emerging European Alliance with commons activists, social economy networks and academics (*La Coop des Communs* - France ; *Smart* - Belgium ;* Internet Interdisciplinary Institute of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya* - Spain ; *Réseau Européen des Villes et Régions de l’Économie Sociale (REVES) aisbl *- European Network ) and its partners (*Coompanions* - Sweden). Devastating fires and floods, the struggle for racial justice, and harsh partisan rhetoric surrounding the upcoming elections, all add to feelings of upheaval and loss. There is also a kind of anticipatory fear as we wonder, “what next?”. Yet, many also believe this is a time of breakthrough and rebirth, even as we mourn the great suffering. We recognize the extraordinary potential in what is emerging, the sacred responsibility of being alive in these times. She told us "everything in the natural world has consciousness, and if you are given energy, be sure to pass it on - give it away - don't keep it to yourself." * For over twenty-five years Phil Borges has been documenting indigenous and tribal cultures. He often saw these cultures identify “psychotic” symptoms as an indicator of shamanic potential and was intrigued by how differently psychosis is defined and treated in the West. Phil’s recent project, CRAZYWISE, explores the relevance of Shamanic traditional practices and beliefs to those of us living in the 'modern' world. Through interviews with renowned mental health professionals including Gabor Mate, MD, Robert Whitaker, and Roshi Joan Halifax, PhD, Phil explores the growing severity of the mental health crisis in America and discovers a growing movement of professionals and psychiatric survivors who demand alternative treatments that focus on recovery, nurturing social connections, and finding meaning. A Humanity Rising Conversation with Elisabet Sahtouris and Jim Garrison *Elisabet Sahtouris:* Suppose we made a mass agreement of souls to lock ourselves up because it would be the only way for us to get the necessary breather to make a real shift. For the maturation to happen at a global level we had to do the lockdown globally, and the ‘health crisis’ was the only way to do it. So we created a soul level agreement about this pandemic and we locked ourselves up and look what we did very quickly. We had a whole new view of what heroism is, who we look up to as role models. And they were the caregivers, the doctors the nurses the ambulance drivers the mask-makers, everybody who was caring. We have to go universally as humans into caring and sharing, into understanding our oneness, that the crisis affects all of us equally. And the first thing that took us into a different kind of ‘new’ was recognizing that racism had to end, that we are all one, that it is ridiculous to fight each other. We are finally learning the lessons. To consider them as slow gestures of a living geology, improvisational experiments that gradually stabilized into habits now necessary to the ongoing metabolism of the sphere. For truly: are not these cyclical pilgrimages — these huge, creaturely hegiras — also pulsations within the broad Body of earth? Are they not ways that divergent places or ecosystems communicate with one another, trading vital qualities essential to their continued flourishing? Think again of the salmon, this gift born of the rocky gravels and melting glaciers, nurtured by colossal cedars and by tumbled trunks decked with ferns, fungi, and moss, an aquatic, muscled energy strengthening itself in the mossed and forested mountains until it’s ready to be released into the broad ocean. Pouring seaward, it adds itself to that voluminous cauldron of currents spiraling in huge gyres, shaded by algal blooms and charged by faint glissandos of whale song… Until, grown large with the sea’s abundance, this ocean-infused life flows back up the rivers and tributaries and spreads out into the wooded valleys, gifting the hollows and the needled highlands with new minerals and nutrients, feeding bears and osprey and eagles, ensuring that the glinting gift will be reborn afresh from a lump of luminous eggs stashed beneath a layer of pebbles. This circulation, this systole and diastole, is one of the surest signs that this earth is alive — a rhythmic pulse of silvery, glacier-fed brilliance pouring through various arteries into the wide body of the ocean, circulating and growing there, only to return by various veins to the beating heart of the forest, gravid with new life. By Robert Cobbold …When Darwin published the *Origin of Species*, a critical feedback loop was connected: evolution became conscious of itself. Much like an individual undergoing a spiritual awakening, the evolutionary process has, through us, awoke to itself. And that self-awareness represents a huge evolutionary leap forward. As any therapist will tell you, the first step towards changing your patterns of behaviour is to become aware of them. What unconscious triggers cause you to get angry or reach for another glass of wine? If you can become truly self-aware in those moments then you have given yourself a choice. You’re no longer stuck in an automatic pattern of behaviour. What I’m trying to describe here is analogous, except we’re talking about the self-awareness not of individuals, but of the evolutionary process as a whole. Because evolution too has its habits and patterns, and some of those are conducive to humanity’s evolutionary flourishing, while others are holding us back.
