CfP tripleC special issue "Interrogating internships" (ed. Nicole Cohen, Greig de Peuter, Enda Brophy)
by Christian Fuchs 12 Nov '13

http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/announcement/view/17 Call for Papers: Special issue of tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique Interrogating Internships Edited by Nicole S. Cohen (University of Toronto Mississauga), Greig de Peuter (Wilfrid Laurier University), Enda Brophy (Simon Fraser University) When publisher Condé Nast cancelled its internship program in October 2013, the response was mixed: many cheered the end of a program that asked debt-laden youth to labour for free, while others lamented the closure of one of the only routes into media work. When depicted in the mainstream media, internships are surrounded by an aura of glamour: rapper Kanye West did a stint at luxury designer Fendi, Lady Gaga arranged one at designer Philip Treacy, and Hollywood portrayed the phenomenon in the movie The Internship. The gloss is fading, however: digital electronics manufacturer Foxconn was caught employing student interns on dubious terms on its assembly lines; former interns launched a successful class-action suit against Fox Searchlight Pictures; and Ross Perlin’s Intern Nation: How to Earn Nothing and Learn Little in the Brave New Economy (Verso, 2011) was vital in pushing internships into a critical spotlight internationally. Within just a few years, internships have become a high-profile subject, garnering media attention, catalyzing activism, provoking government action, and sparking lawsuits against massive corporations. Although internships are prevalent in communication, cultural, media, and entertainment industries, scholarly literature on internships from communication and cultural studies remains limited. This special issue of tripleC seeks to situate internships within the labour turn in research in communication studies and beyond. The issue will interrogate some of the multiple articulations between and among internships, capitalism, communication, and culture. Employers in the media and cultural sectors are regularly singled out as playing a key role in perpetuating the normalization and intensification of unpaid or low paid intern labour, illuminating the interplay of glamourous occupations, the reserve army of labour, and discount wages. For many young people, internships provide an initial encounter with and formative experience of the capitalist labour market, yet the relationship between internships and the category of exploitation is not necessarily straightforward. And many youth are shut out of internships altogether, highlighting the way class divisions structure entry into communication and cultural industries. Internships are also an emerging trope in popular media culture, with television shows ranging from Girls to Gallery Girls pointing to the gendered dimension of internships. And, if internships are in the international spotlight today, it is thanks to growing intern labour activism and the way interns and their allies have turned their communicative capacities to alternative ends, raising awareness through DIY video-making, engaging in creative online protest and campaigns, and effectively naming-and-shaming intern employers via social media. Internships are an entry point for interrogating contested conditions of life and labour in communicative capitalism at a time when precarity is an overarching structure of feeling. So, we invite articles, reports, interviews, and pieces that develop key concepts from academics, activists, and interns (current and former) on issues including but not limited to: * the political-economic context of the spread of (unpaid) internships * the relationship of internships to student debt and youth unemployment * social exclusion based on class, race, and gender and intersectional analysis of the social relations of internships; * the production of meaning, e.g., discourse analysis of media coverage of intern issues, everyday talk of internships (‘paying your dues,’ ‘getting a foot in the door’); * representations of internships in popular media culture; * government regulation, policy proposals, legal issues, and class-action law suits; * ‘passionate labour,’ governmentality, self-exploitation, working for exposure, network sociality, and reputational economies; * case studies of internships within and/or across particular sectors of the arts, media, and cultural industries (e.g., journalism, fashion, film); * historical perspectives on internships in the communication and cultural industries; * intern activism within and beyond the union movement; strategies, tactics, and organizing models; * critical and contextualized biographical accounts of internship experiences; * the role of education institutions in the intern economy; * genealogy of the term ‘intern’; * elite internships and access; * theoretical key concepts for interrogating internships, such as exploitation, youth, and intersectionality, etc. Length: * Peer-reviewed academic articles: 5,000-8,000 words not including references * Interviews, reports from organizations, non-academic articles: 1,000-2,500 words not including references * Key concept entries: 1,000-2,000 words not including references Publishing Schedule: Jan. 15, 2014: deadline for proposals (300-500 word abstract) Feb. 1, 2014: notification of acceptance (scholarly articles still subject to peer review) June 1, 2014: deadline for first drafts Aug. 1, 2014: editorial feedback provided Oct. 1, 2014: final drafts submitted Nov. 1, 2014: publication of special issue Please send queries and abstract proposals (including title, abstract of around 300-500 words, affiliation, contact data, brief biographical note) via email to the 3 co-editors: Nicole S. For this task, articles should employ critical theories and/or empirical research inspired by critical theories and/or philosophy and ethics guided by critical thinking as well as relate the analysis to power structures and inequalities of capitalism, especially forms of stratification such as class, racist and other ideologies and capitalist patriarchy. The journal is especially interested in how analyses relate to normative, political and critical dimensions and how they help illuminating conditions that foster or hinder the advancement of an inclusive, just and participatory information society. It publishes both theoretical and empirical contributions as well as reflections and book reviews. Follow tripleC on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CommCapCritique

thanks for the comments, Kevin/Tom: of course this could be some cointelpro, or it could just be a personal issue, how would we be able to know this ? on a rational level, this is xtremely difficult to understand: we had friendly relations with heather, promoted her work, and she asked us to publish these excerpts herself. How could she forget ? that seems so impossible to fathom. and once she knew about the oversight, why did she not relent, but on the contrary escalated? as for orsan's remark, she believes we make money out of our curation, and that we are publicly funded. Of course you know both are wrong. We make zero income on that curation, all the wiki and blog work is free labour, and the very reason of my precarity , lack of heath insurance etc (including months with no money for food, solved by family solidarity): I have occasionally received very small sub-minimum wage contributions via james, when we fundraised in times of crisis; now, we won a EU grant, not for the p2p foundation, but to pay researchers that do actual research for the project (and none of that money has come in yet); this is not public funding for the foundation my situation is not rare, most of our associates live in precarious circumstances with very low incomes, and none of p2p-f volunteering is funded; we are all trying to do our best to generate derivative funding from the market next year is the first year I can look forward to monthly wages since 2007; and it will used to fill holes and bring my family to Ecuador. So no, we are not profiting from heather; on the contrary, we were helping her to get her ideas across to more people, costing us energy and time . -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Heather now says she is against p2p governance and p2p theory and says she published diagrams showing it can't work, but looking at the excerpts I have seen now and before, she is talking about exactly this, and discussing processes such as stigmergy that were treated by us about five years ago, in other words, the approval economy, is not essentially that different from what we mean by peer production and what is covered under 'p2p theory'. She reworks and expands on a body of work that has been circulating before, Without the ruckus, this could have been the basis of mutual enrichment, Michel << Message: 3 Date: Mon, 11 Nov 2013 10:27:24 +0200 From: Apostolis Xekoukoulotakis <xekoukou(a)gmail.com> Subject: Re: [P2P-F] "anonymous campaign against p2p-foundation" calmness To: P2P Foundation mailing list <p2p-foundation(a)lists.ourproject.org> Cc: p2p-foundation <p2p-foundation(a)lists.ourproject.org> Message-ID: <0C67D740-FA05-46EE-B76F-FD2A6A5DFB5F(a)gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" Please let us have a few days to calm down. anonymous campaign against p2p foundation

Dear Orsan, I think it is a good idea to ask James to publish some kind of report about p2p foundation funding, I copied him, Michel <<< From: Orsan <orsan1234(a)gmail.com> Subject: Re: [P2P-F] anonymous campaign against p2p-foundation To: P2P Foundation mailing list <p2p-foundation(a)lists.ourproject.org> Cc: p2p-foundation <p2p-foundation(a)lists.ourproject.org> Message-ID: <79B5C9A0-BD32-4D6D-9248-3692F4AECCCF(a)gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Michel I know because you say so and I believe you, and I believe you because I feel it and we also met in person and spent some time. Obviously there are many like Heather who may be didn't meet you yet and can't believe you but also the fact that at this level it can be achieved by merely relying on your own free labour and under precarious conditions. This actually contradict with Heather's own experience, since what she has chosen to do is more about radical journalism and activism and that doesn't pay back at the level p2pf operates... anyway What I feel would be helpful, because this is what i think what is heather also most sensitive about (rightly as all of us), or some of us, is the feeling of injustice and being used. anyway forget about me and others, and just to quick fix the problem of possible DDoS attack, pls send Heather, even if in dutch, the year reports of the foundation which probably you have to publish every year and has to include the fiscal reports. iIn principle this is public info but usually they are not widely open right in the middle (just looked for but couldn't find on the wiki) so please send her so she has a proof, again this I guess would be a quick fix for the Anon campaign problem we have. if there is another reason behind it however it should be uncovered. while writing these lines i realized that her book is out http://www.amazon.com/Binding-Chaos-collaboration-global-scale/dp/148952768… And looks like good read with a great title 'binding chaos' which I believe describes very good what you Michel and we all try to do, while collaborating radically and creating what I call a systemic 'change value'. and again right now remembering that she was raising a criticism towards p2p economies, probably that is also part of her book and -thinking loudly- her anger could be theoretically informed as well... anyway the contradiction here is worth to dig a bit more I think and given that the P2PF is now at a turning point with the recent great achievements in Ecuador and with the EU grant such reflection can be useful for all p2p friends. I still feel hopefully something very positive might come out of this. just for the record then regarding Kevin's generous interpretation. Minutes after the first Anon accusation, I send a very friendly tweet to Heather about the credited blog items and simply asking what the problem was. Instead of responding, she retweeted the accusations with proof, and demanded a 'public apology' or else; she also denied she had given permission, saying I pretended to. Sending 3 excerpts herself, for publication in the blog, if that is not a permission, even a special permission, what is? Furthermore, 'overfunded old white men', if it is personal, I'm 56 and only work with one other old white male, Jean. But it is in fact directed at everyone. It is a racist, sexist, ageist slur. Nice. @mbauwens<https://twitter.com/mbauwens> @P2P_Foundation <https://twitter.com/P2P_Foundation> dear friends, if you haven't noticed, after falsely accusing us of stealing her work (she herself sent us her excerpts to publish); and 7/8 exploding accusations, Heather Marsh, who doesn't know me nor the p2p foundation, is continuing a disinfo campaign through the heavily following Anonymous account; I can't possibly defend myself and the P2P Foundation alone against this, so I hope I won't be alone in refuting these allegations or pointing out that Anonymous is chosing a wrong target. Above, they seem to believe that P2P-F is publicly funded, and ignore the real precarity and sacrifice of the many people working with and around this, This is extremely sad, and I am frankly baffled, Michel Bauwens -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

dear Anna, if you read my blog account you will see that the flow of accusations has been relentless, yes, it started with a misunderstanding, but as soon as she knew that it was an oversight, it escalated even more, a tweet from Asher tells me this has been a pattern with her before, though I haven't done the research to confirm it, Michel -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

It comes from David King of Grassroots Democracy Incorporated<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1383775784-59ce21654ec525300355b1fc3e19109…>in British Columbia, Canada. David gave me permission to share it with you. Coheartedly, Tom One of the realities that bedevils voting is that, in an adversarial and two-party system, partisan messages and media comments suggest very limited (bi-polar) choices. People who see nuances, or prefer collaboration, or are seeking a 'third way', or reject confrontation are actively discouraged from voting. In an adversarial and two-party system, the only (apparently) valid reasons for voting are: (1) to elect the good guy; or, (2) to make sure the bad guy doesn't win. Anything else is described as a wasted vote or worse, an undermining of the 'strategic' (blocking) vote. In terms of citizen engagement, we have a problem in that the sense of "the public" is very weak and is being undermined, constantly. *The public is not merely an aggregation of individuals, not is it a temporary or specific or instrumental phenomenon, nor is it detached from its surroundings, nor is it a contractual relationship. The public is greater than the sum of its parts. Something transcendent transforms an aggregation of individuals into "the public" in a time and place. The public is enduring, organic, and embedded in its ecology. The public is relational: it is covenantal (for better or for worse, through sickness and in health, until death do us part).* I would argue that both politicians and conventional media have reasons for wanting to dissolve "the public" and replace it with "public opinion", which is temporary, specific and instrumental, and detached from its surroundings. *In the minds of some politicians (and political machines) and in the minds of some editors, it is not helpful that the 67% of the population who support their position on gun control (for example) today should stick together for consideration of another issues (such as health care) tomorrow. They may not espouse the position the politician or editor wants them to espouse. They may discover that they can disagree and remain in right relationship. They may learn ways of coming together that don't involve the politician or the editor. They may discover that issues are complex, inter-related, of enduring significance. They may decide that they want more sophisticated responses than politicians and editors are prepared to give them.* A poll that suggests that X% of the surveyed population holds a certain position in response to a few carefully chosen questions is not a manifestation of "the public". In respect of both points, there seem to be three underlying problems. The first is the mis-myth that democracy is 'finished' -- that what we have is as good as it gets. We tend to believe that our Constitution, and our electoral laws and practices represent the best model in every significant respect, and there is nothing left to do except perhaps tinker around the edges. The second is the mis-myth that citizens are consumers of democracy (and government), whose only role is to go into the marketplace from time to time and hire a household manager who will thereafter make all the decisions. The final problem I would mention is that most political problems are not technical problems, so experts are not the best people to deal with them. Most political problems are challenges to our wisdom. Expert knowledge can be very helpful in knowing where we are, but it is not necessarily helpful in knowing what we should do. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ site: http://www.co-intelligence.org<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1383775784-fd6a900fb77103fb2c644fc1403dd0c…>/ blog: http://tomatleeblog.com<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1383775785-621dfa8ff370ee7e9b78fddc4eb98dd…> Read Empowering Public Wisdom<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1383775785-b318553648932dbf477a34f67d9c4e3…>, The Tao of Democracy<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1383775785-e987084a3c29b23f479e4138e7e9ad9…>and Reflections on Evolutionary Activism<https://go.madmimi.com/redirects/1383775785-9198b004771e71d2f1082b5c7b6aa74…> Please support our work.
