---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Conway, Ryan Timothy <rtconway(a)indiana.edu> Date: Mon, Nov 4, 2013 at 9:42 PM Subject: FRIDAY: Prof. Johan Bollen - Collective Allocation of Science Funding - Community Commons Colloquia at the Ostrom Workshop - Noon-1:30pm To: The Community Commons Project at IU <comprjt(a)indiana.edu> Cc: "communitycommonsproject(a)gmail.com" <communitycommonsproject(a)gmail.com> Good Afternoon! I'm writing to announce the Community Commons Colloquia for Friday October 11th, Noon-1:30pm. Please distribute this announcement and Flyer to your colleagues, coworkers, departmental listservs, friends, family, and anyone else you think might be interested in learning about the concept of the commons and how academic scholarship, community practice, and social engagement can combine to create both social arrangements and resource-pools with the power to sustain real communities, when faced with failures of the market and the state. * Community Commons Colloquia* *Professor Johan Bollen (IUB Informatics)* Present *"Collective Allocation of Science Funding: A Common Pool Research Resource?"* Date: Friday, November 8th, 2013 Time: Noon-1:30pm Location: The Vincent and Elinor Ostrom Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis, 513 N. Park Avenue Live Stream URL: http://www.indiana.edu/~video/stream/liveflash.html?filename=Colloquia Archive Stream URL: http://www.indiana.edu/~video/stream/launchflash.html?folder=video&filename… *Collective Allocation of Science Funding*: Public agencies like the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) award tens of billions of dollars in annual science funding. How can this money be distributed as efficiently as possible to best promote scientific innovation and productivity? The present system relies primarily on peer review of project proposals. In 2010 alone, NSF convened more than 15,000 scientists to review 55,542 proposals. Although considered the scientific gold standard, peer review requires significant overhead costs, and may be subject to biases, inconsistencies, and oversights. We investigate a class of funding models in which all participants receive an equal portion of yearly funding, but are then required to anonymously donate a fraction of their funding to peers. The funding thus flows from one participant to the next, each acting as if he or she were a funding agency themselves. Here we show through a simulation conducted over large-scale citation data (37M articles, 770M citations) that such a distributed system for science may yield funding patterns similar to existing NIH and NSF distributions, but may do so at much lower overhead while exhibiting a range of other desirable features. Self-correcting mechanisms in scientific peer evaluation can yield an efficient and fair distribution of funding. The proposed model can be applied in many situations in which top-down or bottom-up allocation of public resources is either impractical or undesirable, e.g. public investments, distribution chains, and shared resource management. *Johan Bollen <http://informatics.indiana.edu/jbollen/> *is associate professor at the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing. Fwd: [P2P-URBANISM] Chomsky on architecture
by Michel Bauwens 06 Nov '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Franz Nahrada <f.nahrada(a)reflex.at> Date: Wed, Nov 6, 2013 at 12:19 AM Subject: [P2P-URBANISM] Chomsky on architecture To: p2p-urbanism-world-atlas(a)googlegroups.com a very noteworthy essay was published recently: http://architecturemps.com/full-text-3/ see also http://chomsky.info/articles/20131001.htm *Emeritus Professor in the Department of Linguistics & Philosophy at MIT, Avram Noam Chomsky is amongst the world’s most cited living scholars. Lauded as the ‘father’ of modern linguistics and instigator of the ‘cognitive revolution’ he was voted the “world’s top public intellectual” in 2005. He is, however, best known, and at his most controversial, in the fields of political criticism and activism. Perhaps the most prolific author alive today he has engaged with issues ranging from the Vietnam War, US policy in South and Central America, what he calls the ‘US-Palestinian-Israeli problem’, the Spanish Civil War and the Indonesian invasion of East Timor, to name but a few.The scope of his thinking is nothing short of immense.* *Despite this range of subjects, however, one area that Chomsky has not discussed is the built environment. Here, for the first time he is asked to consider the contemporary infrastructure of the United States in the context of his writings, criticism, and thought. In doing so, he discusses the military infrastructure crossing large swathes of the southern United States in the form of the US-Mexican border. He also discusses urban sprawl as a product of what he calls “social engineering” — a project conceived and orchestrated by a sophisticated web of affiliations across the government and the private sector. Caught up in this, he also pinpoints the subprime crisis and the current economic recession as the result of a matrix of forces within which architecture inevitably played a role. In short, he offers his particular perspective on what lies behind some of America’s most conspicuous architectural and infrastructural projects.* ------------------------ some quotes: "The origins of suburbia reveal an attempt to take over a fairly efficient mass-transportation system in parts of California — the electric railways in Los Angeles and the like — and destroy them so as to shift energy use to fossil fuels and increase consumer demand for rubber, automobiles and trucks and so on. It was a literal conspiracy. It went to court. The courts fined the corporations $5000, or something like that, probably equivalent to the cost of their victory dinner...." "It is simply not true that suburbia is a product of the market, or market forces, or people’s ‘uninfluenced’ desires. It is the result of a deliberate social engineering program — led from the center. It is totally political in that sense. ... It didn’t emerge spontaneously — a magical product of the market. It was engineered for a specific range of interests." ----------------- maybe a good move towards understanding that the left was too busy atacking unequal distribution of wealth to understand the whole form that our material environment took is essentially and basically flawed. Fwd: Wired : learner centered movement

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Fri, Oct 18, 2013 at 2:16 AM Subject: Wired : learner centered movement To: "econowmix(a)googlegroups.com" <econowmix(a)googlegroups.com>, " netention-dev(a)googlegroups.com" <netention-dev(a)googlegroups.com>, " global-survival(a)googlegroups.com" <global-survival(a)googlegroups.com> http://www.wired.com/business/2013/10/free-thinkers/* * *a new breed of educators, inspired by everything from the Internet to evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, and AI, are inventing radical new ways for children to learn, grow, and thrive. To them, knowledge isn’t a commodity that’s delivered from teacher to student but something that emerges from the students’ own curiosity-fueled exploration.* entire article : http://www.wired.com/business/2013/10/free-thinkers/all/ *student centered movement : http://www.wired.com/business/2013/10/student-centered-movement/* " TED has created a toolkit full of ideas for jumpstarting student-centered learning in your home, local community, or school. It’s called SOLE: How to Bring Self-Organized Learning Environments to Your Community. Download it here <http://www.ted.com/pages/sole_toolkit> and share your story afterward on the SOLE Tumblr <http://tedsole.tumblr.com/>." further large excerpts : Teachers provide prompts, not answers, and then they step aside so students can teach themselves and one another. They are creating ways for children to discover their passion—and uncovering a generation of geniuses in the process. ... “If you put a computer in front of children and remove all other adult restrictions, they will self-organize around it,” Mitra says, “like bees around a flower.” A charismatic and convincing proselytizer, Mitra has become a darling in the tech world. In early 2013 he won a $1 million grant from TED, the global ideas conference, to pursue his work. He’s now in the process of establishing seven “schools in the cloud,” five in India and two in the UK. In India, most of his schools are single-room buildings. There will be no teachers, curriculum, or separation into age groups—just six or so computers and a woman to look after the kids’ safety. His defining principle: “The children are completely in charge.” Mitra argues that the information revolution has enabled a style of learning that wasn’t possible before. ... Mitra’s work has roots in educational practices dating back to Socrates. Theorists from Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi to Jean Piaget and Maria Montessori have argued that students should learn by playing and following their curiosity. ... In recent years, researchers have begun backing up those theories with evidence. In a 2011 study, scientists at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Iowa scanned the brain activity of 16 people sitting in front of a computer screen. ... The study found that when the subjects controlled their own observations, they exhibited more coordination between the hippocampus and other parts of the brain involved in learning and posted a 23 percent improvement in their ability to remember objects. “The bottom line is, if you’re not the one who’s controlling your learning, you’re not going to learn as well,” says lead researcher Joel Voss, now a neuroscientist at Northwestern University. ... A similar study at UC Berkeley demonstrated that kids given no instruction were much more likely to come up with novel solutions to a problem. “The science is brand-new, but it’s not as if people didn’t have this intuition before,” says coauthor Alison Gopnik, a professor of psychology at UC Berkeley. Gopnik’s research is informed in part by advances in artificial intelligence. If you program a robot’s every movement, she says, it can’t adapt to anything unexpected. But when scientists build machines that are programmed to try a variety of motions and learn from mistakes, the robots become far more adaptable and skilled. The same principle applies to children, she says. ... Evolutionary psychologists have also begun exploring this way of thinking. Peter Gray, a research professor at Boston College who studies children’s natural ways of learning, argues that human cognitive machinery is fundamentally incompatible with conventional schooling. Gray points out that young children, motivated by curiosity and playfulness, teach themselves a tremendous amount about the world. And yet when they reach school age, we supplant that innate drive to learn with an imposed curriculum. “We’re teaching the child that his questions don’t matter, that what matters are the questions of the curriculum. That’s just not the way natural selection designed us to learn. It designed us to solve problems and figure things out that are part of our real lives.” Some school systems have begun to adapt to this new philosophy—with outsize results. In the 1990s, Finland pared the country’s elementary math curriculum from about 25 pages to four, reduced the school day by an hour, and focused on independence and active learning. By 2003, Finnish students had climbed from the lower rungs of international performance rankings to first place among developed nations. ... Juárez Correa had mixed feelings about the test. His students had succeeded because he had employed a new teaching method, one better suited to the way children learn. It was a model that emphasized group work, competition, creativity, and a student-led environment. So it was ironic that the kids had distinguished themselves because of a conventional multiple-choice test. “These exams are like limits for the teachers,” he says. “They test what you know, not what you can do, and I am more interested in what my students can do.” ... But these examples—involving only thousands of students—are the exceptions to the rule. The system as a whole educates millions and is slow to recognize or adopt successful innovation. It’s a system that was constructed almost two centuries ago to meet the needs of the industrial age. Now that our society and economy have evolved beyond that era, our schools must also be reinvented. ... *Want to help teachers like Sergio Juárez Correa make a difference? Here’s how you can get involved in the student-centered movement<http://www.wired.com/business/2013/10/student-centered-movement/> .* -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

dear Marco et al. I am sharing these proposals with our technical list and volunteers, right now, as of say 18 months ago, country tags are added systematically to all new items on the wiki there are also language sections, and we have a specific way to indicate local wiki's and blog, as vasilis and jean can explain for the greek and dutch blogs, Michel Message: 3 Date: Fri, 1 Nov 2013 01:14:40 +0100 From: Marco Giustini <info(a)marcogiustini.info> Subject: [P2P-F] p2p foundation internationalization To: P2P Foundation mailing list <p2p-foundation(a)lists.ourproject.org> Message-ID: <CAMFKyxC8NFGLasW=znxe6ubaG-spsW5xaV-axT1AX-L5hKfMPA(a)mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" I think is needed to localize contents collected by the wiki and the blog of p2pfoundation. And more, is needed to create local communities in different languages than english. If someone is interested in that project, could be possible to try to build the internet infrastructure without touching the original www.p2pfoundation.net website. Class of the very rich the only ( organized ) class left ? - Is there the Emergence of a "Commons" class ?
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 02 Nov '13

I ask myself : *Y a-t'il le potentiel d'une emergence d'une classe autour des biens communs ? / **Is there the Emergence of a "Commons" class ?* In the podcast linked below, from 2007, before visibility and organization on the public squares, at some point they answer that there is only the very rich people who still remain as organized in the form of a class , as the rest of society is segmented, and the poor workers can not identify anymore to a space they share, namely the factories. Hence I ask myself : can there be convergence and identification around a "class of the commons" / "des biens communs" ?

The topics are primarily focused on crowdfunding, crowdsourcing and the role of social enterprise in "the new economy." I would appreciate your input as it is turning into an anthology of the AnIdeaNation - Global Think Tank. You are all members of a global think tank by virtue of what you do and how you support the new economic paradigm. Please choose 2-4 (or more) questions that resonate with you & contribute 2 - 3 pages that anwer those questions in depth to be included as co-authors. The goal is to have as many voices represented as possible. Kindly recommend anyone you know who would make a valuable contribution. I require this material no later than November 15, 2013 by 5pm. Any money made from this book project is devoted to helping grow the global think tank and to provide media (film & social media) for social enterprises. Your contact information will be included (only if you so desire - please indicate such when you return your submission to: ideanationinfo(a)gmail.com ). Thanks for your time and devotion to living the new economy! In light, peace & love, Joy Case m.ed www.AnIdeaNation.com @anideanation @funditTV 604.612.1708 Please answer the following questions in 2 - 3 pages (choose 2-4 or more): What do you consider to be the top 3 challenges in our world today? What is the most efficient way to address these challenges & who should do it? What does living the new economy mean to you? What does it look like? What work are you willing and able to do now to promote your concept of a new economy? What lead you to pursue a different way of being in the world? If you could wave a magic wand, what systems would be changed & how would that affect you on a daily basis? What is your background? When did you first begin thinking about systems change? How does your story reveal the "magic" of the collective consciousness? In other words, when did you start to see the connections between your inspired thoughts and the work and thoughts of others working for a new economy? What can each person do today to "live a new economy?" What does media look like in a new economy? What role does government / politics have? How do you see the processes of crowdsourcing and crowdfunding serving a new economy? What are your next steps for enacting the new economy in your day to day life? *** Thank you for emailing back & I will let you know by Nov. 18th what material will be included and I will send a draft back to you for your review & approval before the 23rd. Is time as currency unit the solution? response to comment.
by Apostolis Xekoukoulotakis 02 Nov '13

02 Nov '13

This is a response to Sebastien's comment on http://blog.p2pfoundation.net/a-currency-proposal-for-liquid-ownership/2013… . I Hope they fix the problem with the comments soon. Till then: " An old debate, indeed, with a new answer. The question is whether a change in the token of denomination can alter the social relations or the exchange ratios. Would a transformation from lbs to kilos change the ratio of weight between objects? Certainly not. In the same way, if the forces of the market determine the ratios between products(in time or euro), then there will be no actual change. You can also read Marx's critique with which I agree: http://www.marxisthumanistinitiative.org/alternatives-to-capital/marx%E2%80… on labor-money). If scientists were to determine the ratios based on objective criteria, would people have to be forced to work if they deem that a specific ratio doesn't give them enough incentive to work? " -- Sincerely yours, Apostolis Xekoukoulotakis

I am *Louis Bohtlingk* from Scotland, author of *Dare To Care* - a love based foundation for money and finance - written in collobaration with Hazel Henderson: www.daretocare.ning.com and www.carefirstworld.com We are organising our *Meeting the Mystery of Money* workshop *Dec 6-8* at Heavenly Retreat, Angel Fire near Taos, New Mexico. It is a very beautiful and unique, sustainable home and retreat center, situated on 55 acres in the pristine forest above the village Angel Fire with spectacular views. Our hosts are *Leslie Danziger and Joel Goldblatt.* *See flyer and more info attached.* In this workshop we deal with the deep transformation of our human behavior with money. We are assisted in making transformed financial transactions guided by our heart's intelligence. *To become a Care First Light.** **“Care First means, we let care (our heart) lead the way in all money matters and make sure ** that money serves the well being of people and the Earth and is not used at their expense (Money First).” * We have a maximum of 12 participants and for those who are flying from other states, I want to make sure that the workshop happens before you book your flights. Once we have 8 participants the workshop can happen. *Therefore I ask you to register with me as soon as you know you want to come*: daretocare(a)carefirstworld.com Then I will let you know as soon as I can, *when you can book your flight.* *Traval arrangements for people flying in:* *Fly to Albuquerque* and make a beautiful three hour journey to the village of Angel Fire by Van. In Angel Fire are condo's for rent that can be shared for around $60/night, more or less depending with how many we share the condo's. The Condo's are about two miles from Heavenly Retreat. *Let me know if you want to share one with others.** * *For transport* Kokopelli Property Management, who deals with the condo's can also arrange group transport from Albuquerque, which will lower the cost. We can let everyone arrive at Albuquerque airport in a clustered time period. For more info on all this you can E-mail Joel Goldblatt ( joel(a)bluenergyusa.com ) or call him on 575-770-5110. If you have any questions about the workshop you can call me, Louis, on *my USA mobile: 571-268-1046* With blessings Louis Bohtlingk -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
