Fwd: New answer to "Are social networks the new platforms for social activism?"
by Michel Bauwens 18 Jan '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Quora <noreply(a)quora.com> Date: Tue, Jan 18, 2011 at 11:05 PM Subject: New answer to "Are social networks the new platforms for social activism?" To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com [image: Quora]New answer to "Are social networks the new platforms for social activism?" *Seb Paquet*: Social networks in their current incarnations do offer a rudimentary platform for awareness-raising (through word-of-mouse information sharing), petition-style activism, and passive group-forming (join the group, become a fan, forget about it). As such, they serve an important function. Deep change rarely happens unless people (1) are pissed off, (2) know that lots of others are pissed off too, and (3) are aware that everyone knows that people are pissed off, which makes action socially acceptable (credit for this observation goes to Henry Copeland <http://www.quora.com/Henry-Copeland>) Awareness is necessary but insufficient for change, however, and *action platforms *are needed to conduct effective activism online. In this century, effective activism is no longer about taking institutional power to effect change; it's about *getting new things started* and *building alternatives*. Project-based, creative and viral activism is where it's at. Current-day social networks are not really designed to support this kind of activism, but there is already some promising work in that direction. Dear Leopold, Sounds like a really interesting project, a few ideas: via the P2P-F list, we can launch an initial discussion with interesting people in our network, i.e. "p2p-foundation" < p2p-foundation(a)lists.ourproject.org>, with people like Eric Hunting, Sam Rose, and more via the p2p-urbanism list, "p2p-urbanism-world-atlas" < p2p-urbanism-world-atlas(a)googlegroups.com>, there is a whole crew of commons-oriented urban planners and architects such as Nikos Salingaros, Stefano Serafini and others once done, you can join a federation of commons oriented spaces like the one I'm just launching you may also want to watch the documentary A New We, and since your close, visit damanhur and its villages (you don't have to buy into their metaphysics to find this interesting real-life experimentation in different styles of sustainable living), I can personally not read German, so I suggest you write a english-language FAQ to launch the discussion in the suggested mailing lists, we can discuss how this links to a posssible ars electronica proposal separately, Stefano, Nikos: would you guys be interested in a joint project to ars electronica, to which I would participate, and eventually linked to Leopold's project? I've never been there, and cannont participate without funding; they always write me to be a candidate in their annual awards, but I haven't found time to do this on my own, Michel On Wed, Jan 12, 2011 at 9:13 PM, leopold zyka <leopold.zyka(a)gmail.com>wrote: > Dear Michel, > > Our last encounter was at the en:able conference in Vienna last year. > en:able had a lot of unforgettable impressions to me. > Also I am excited about your Open Everything movement ! > Currently I am planning to buy a parcel of land at the periphery of vienna. > I want to build a house for living with extended semiprivate spaces > (gallery ?, ambient cinema ?, DIY-Lab, others…). Fwd: New answer to "Are social networks the new platforms for social activism?"
by Michel Bauwens 18 Jan '11

18 Jan '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Quora <noreply(a)quora.com> Date: Tue, Jan 18, 2011 at 10:15 AM Subject: New answer to "Are social networks the new platforms for social activism?" To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com [image: Quora]New answer to "Are social networks the new platforms for social activism?" *William Carleton*: The answer to this question will depend, ultimately, on the interests that those in charge of social networks choose to serve. If choices in design and development are made to maintain the commercial interests advertisers have in targeting messages to consumers, then, no, social networks will be no better for social activism than any other means of communication. Said another way: if put into the service of advertising, then social networks will become a tool that can be used effectively, or not, by people who are otherwise motivated to be socially active. If social networks are a trick, a bait and switch, a way to expose users to advertisers and direct marketers, then social networks will end up being indifferent, able to serve good causes and repressive governments alike. If, on the other hand, choices in design and development are relentlessly made to privilege a user's access to relevant, uncensored, unsponsored information, even at the expense of advertisers who would prefer to control what is known and said on all media, then, yes, social networks can become a platform for social activism of a qualitatively far higher order. If this happens, then social networks become something far greater than just another means of communication. Social networks then become exponentially more powerful means to share, sift and analyze information than any known analog platforms. Today's leading social networks show a lack of ambition and an unimaginative willingness to resuscitate 20th Century business models that might well otherwise be exhausted by now. So it will be up to others to displace today's leaders in social networking, or to end run them, if social networking is going to actually improve the human condition. Quora is a promising candidate (in part, no doubt, because it is so new and not yet committed to a revenue model). If it stays open and permits itself and others to iterate relentlessly on ways to gather and syndicate real time information, it could be part of the more ambitious of the two paradigms, the one that has social networks destroying advertising altogether. Speaking now to those who found social networks: IMHO the place to start is to honor authentic speech and to put the technology to the service of natural persons. If you can afford to never make design or business choices that compromise on those principles, you could do something relevant for the world. *To see the question page with all answers, visit: http://www.quora.com/l/0kYrHJPr* Thanks, The Quora Team We sent you this email because you are following this question. Article : "When Iceland Reinvents Democracy"
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 18 Jan '11

article in french with an introduction to the transitions happening in Iceland http://www.nbiou.com/international/revolution-quand-l%E2%80%99islande-reinv… machine *translation in english :* http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&… ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: M Date: 2011/1/10 Subject: Fwd: Tr : Le savez-vous ?

Dear Richard, thanks for this forward, I am aware of Tarde's work mostly through the reading of Maurizio Lazzarato (in French), and though I find it interested, I do not use it much, I guess I'm still much more of a structuralist-oriented thinker, but please keep forwarding such items, I'm particularly interested in the 'yoga of resistance', can you tell us more? and what is 'phd'?
