To: p2p-urbanism-world-atlas(a)googlegroups.com Does any of you know - or is any of you involved in the IBM Smarter City Program ? some links : http://www.thesmartercity.com/ http://www.ibm.com/smarterplanet/us/en/smarter_cities/cities/index.html I am looking forward to distributed approaches, and this kind of planning and urban emergency response project looks pretty centralized till now http://www.fastcompany.com/1712443/building-a-smarter-favela-ibm-signs-up-r… Could IBM and the Rio de Janeiro politicians be interested in supporting open source / libre software , and empower populations for their own p2p shared and accessible data by all and for all, as to enable response to "mudslides and floods"... IBM has an understanding of OpenSource approaches... * * *http://www.ibm.com/ibm/governmentalprograms/ipossw.html* *excerpt :* * * *Policy IBM believes that open source software should be leveraged as a part of a national IT architecture but open standards are the true facilitators of a smarter, more agile and transparent government.* To whom will the "multi-billion upgrade" benefit ? Perhaps such projects already exist ? In this case, I have the impression it sounds pretty centralized... but I am not sure if they will use closed standards, closed databases, and centralized "control rooms"... ----------------------- http://www.fastcompany.com/1712443/building-a-smarter-favela-ibm-signs-up-r… Building a Smarter Favela: IBM Signs Up RioBY GREG LINDSAY<http://www.fastcompany.com/user/159824>Mon Dec 27, 2010 A new operations center features an impressive high-tech centerpiece--a weather forecasting system built atop IBM Research’s “Deep Thunder” software and tailored to Rio’s climate and topography. IBM is announcing this morning an agreement with the city of Rio de Janeiro to build a “Single City Operations Center,” or what amounts to a control room for the sprawling megalopolis. The center will draw upon data from dozens of municipal departments and public agencies. While the system will initially focus on predicting the kinds of mudslides and floods that killed hundreds last April<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_2010_Rio_de_Janeiro_floods_and_mudslides> and left 15,000 homeless, it’s designed, ultimately, to monitor and respond to any type of emergency--just in time for the city to host both the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The deal is IBM’s most ambitious smarter city project to date; previous efforts have tended to be single-purpose programs in developed cities, such as a congestion pricing scheme for London or water management in Dubuque. But Rio is a different situation--a bona fide megacity in one of the world’s fastest growing economies, in the midst of a multi-billion dollar infrastructure upgrade ahead of the World Cup. Although financial terms were not disclosed, the deal illuminates just how indispensable IBM hopes to become to the daily operations of Rio--and how it plans to do the same for cities everywhere. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/p2presearch_listcultures.org Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Think tank: http://www.asianforesightinstitute.org/index.php/eng/The-AFI

destroying the urban commons of the poor
by Michel Bauwens 19 Jan '11

19 Jan '11

article by Richard Pithouse, http://www.sacsis.org.za/site/article/606.1 Destroying the urban commons of the poor in Motala Heights near Durban, South Africa <http://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?p=13260> [image: photo of Michel Bauwens] Michel Bauwens 24th January 2011 The bulldozing of inconvenient realities is not just a strand in the story of our past. Almost a hundred years after the Land Act millions of roving pariahs remain in the shack settlements on the edges of our towns and cities. They are often shunted around at the point of guns wielded by the state and private power. There are plenty of sixteen year olds who have never lived a day under apartheid but who have seen their homes, communities and, in Motala Heights, their temple, treated as nothing but an aberration to be bulldozed from the landscape. Excerpted from a report by <http://www.sacsis.org.za/site/article/606.1>South-African urban commons activist *Richard Pithouse*: *“Here in South Africa the Constitution may declare that we are all, or least all of us with the appropriate papers, equally the public and equally entitled to find and share beauty as we see fit. But much of our shared life is dominated by business interests that appeal to markets rather than publics and not everyone is in the market for everything. This is not always a case of market logic rendering, as it often does, some people superfluous and therefore invisible. When the poor are out of the places to which they are supposed to keep, when a shack stands next to a suburban home or a poor child sits next to a richer child in a school, the mere presence of people without money can render them hyper-visible. People, with all their individual depth and complexity, are sometimes turned into objects onto which all kinds of contempt, fear and hate are projected.* *One of the many places in our society where the fracturing in who counts as a full member of our national public and who does not is immediately visible is Motala Heights near Durban. Motala Heights is nestled into a valley between the factories on the outskirts of Pinetown and a steep hill that leads up to the expensive suburb of Kloof. Some of the people in the valley are poor and live in tin houses that they have built on rented land and some are middle class or wealthy and live in large suburban homes. There is also a shack settlement at the foot of the hill that leads up to Kloof. * *In 2006 the eThekwini Municipality tried to send in their men with guns to eradicate the shack settlement. When Bheki Ngcobo told them that their actions were illegal in terms of the Constitution he was tear-gassed and beaten to the ground. But, in the end, the squatters stopped the City’s illegal eviction. The law is not everything but it is also not nothing. At the time the squatters were convinced that the eviction had been directed by a local landlord and businessman, Ricky Govender, and claimed that the municipal demolition team had been drinking in his pub before they set off up the hill to eradicate a community. There is no doubt that some municipal officials and police officers speak as if Govender, who boasts of connections to Jacob Zuma, has some sort of extra-legal authority over the whole community. Govender’s plans to force out the poor in order to develop Motala Heights for private profit clearly carry a lot more weight than the demand of its poor residents that the state support them in building a community for all the residents of the area.* *Govender has been trying, for some years now, to evict some of the people in the tin houses. They are often old and poor. Some have lived in their homes for as long as forty-five years. Like the municipality, he has failed because his attempted evictions have been illegal. This is public knowledge. Allegations that he has dumped dangerous industrial waste right outside activists’ homes, threatened to have activist Shamita Naidoo killed for R50 and to bulldoze people’s homes have been reported in the local press. “* -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/p2presearch_listcultures.org Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Think tank: http://www.asianforesightinstitute.org/index.php/eng/The-AFI

Just wanted to add a perspective to the discussion here about social networks being new platforms for social activism: >From Participation to Power: The Potential Pitfalls of Web 2.0 http://www.shareable.net/blog/from-participation-to-power-the-potential-pit… The perspective of Harald Katzmair, Ph.d of FAS.research can summed up simply: participation is not power. Unless structure appropriately, online conversations will not move from shared connections, to shared understanding, to shared action. Unless structured appropriately, it will disempower participants. -- Neal Gorenflo | Publisher, http://Shareable.net | 415.867.0429 On Tue, Jan 18, 2011 at 10:19 PM, < p2p-foundation-request(a)lists.ourproject.org> wrote: > Send P2P-Foundation mailing list submissions to > p2p-foundation(a)lists.ourproject.org > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > > https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > p2p-foundation-request(a)lists.ourproject.org > > You can reach the person managing the list at > p2p-foundation-owner(a)lists.ourproject.org > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of P2P-Foundation digest..." > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Fwd: <Coalition> German and EU Green New Deal Proposal

Thank you for sharing that Pdf http://www.boell.org/downloads/Green-New-Deal.pdf I somehow tried to participate in the "Green New Deal" debate, including sharing understanding of the need for exponential monetary mass growth in a capitalist, central bank debt with interest based currency. I see no mention in that pdf of tackling the problem of monetary architectures, and "interest" on credit. My own feeling , if it was understood, is that such view "disturbed" some greens who could influence the agenda. I was asking how such green new deal would be used... and if it would be used to get out of the current capitalist approach. >From my point of view, maintaining the current system is not green, even if one puts a layer of green paint on it, creating new markets as to increase the monetary mass, and maintain the current non-green system.
