Michel, What are the rules for sending email to this list? Is this a forum for philosophical discussion where we can comment on the various topics posted? The old list was called "P2PResearch" which sounded more focused, but the new one is simply "P2P Foundation". I'd also like to point out that finding the email list could be made easier. My point of entry was the blog, which has links to the wiki, Ning group, and sections titled Resources and Community. Nowhere on this page are the terms 'email' or 'mailing list'. I ended up using Google to find the list server page. What is the purpose of the Ning group? -Karl

Re: [P2P-F] [P2P-URBANISM WA] Any of you use map layering for p2p urbanism open collaboration projects ?
by Michel Bauwens 21 Jan '11

Just a question to this crowd of urban experts. I once read that Chinese cities used to produce 60% of their food requirements within or just around their city walls. Does anyone have a reference for this. A remark on ruralization. I don't think we should empty out the cities, but nevertheless, a new balance may be necessary. As I see it, people leave rural areas for two main reasons, one is they have to for reasons of economic survival, as capitalist dynamics destroy their livelyhoods; but the other one is cultural: many young people, leave rural areas for cultural reasons, they see no dynamic future in their static and isolated rural areas. Here is where the Global Villages strategy of Franz Nahrada comes in, the use digital connectivity, empowerement and peer learning to de-isolate the rural. I can take my own life as an example, I can be a throught leader from a provincial city in the forests of northern thailand, a place which two generations ago was still three days travel from the capital city, but is now connected through global satellites and broadband internet, and I feel hardly any sense of isolation anymore. Of course, I have the cultural capital to use these tools, which many still lack, but these are not insurmountable problems. Just want to say, it's not either-or, rural or urban, but a mix, and my guess is that the relocalization you call for, and a return to say organic sustainable agriculture, will require a more labour intensive rural area. I've read, again I forgot where, that a sustainable world would perhaps require a return to a rural population of about 20%. New release Zeitgeist movie big success
by robin 21 Jan '11

21 Jan '11

Heya, wrote about zeitgeist/venus project on the list before (in a pretty biased way) and things are moving forward with the zeitgeist movement. I am thinking about a possibly somewhat balanced blog-post, but I am not sure yet. Haven't seen this new movie yet which as far as I've understood/ heard is less superficial than the ones before. Anyone went to see it? Robin. ----- Forwarded Message ---- From: "noreply(a)zeitgeistmedia.com" <noreply(a)zeitgeistmedia.com> Sent: Fri, January 21, 2011 3:22:26 AM Subject: Zeitgeist: Moving Forward Update | Internet/DVD Release Bravo to the Movement!! *UPDATE: I'm happy to report that "Zeitgeist: Moving Forward" is a wild success and turned into an unprecedented film release premiere. What started as a thought of having maybe 30 total theaters screening the film instead turned into 30 languages alone with a total count of 335 theaters in 60 countries, and still growing daily! With multiple screenings at most of the 335 theaters, our total number of screenings is well over 1,000 world-wide. The response to the film has been huge... reports coming in of sold-out crowds in venues ranging upwards of 500-900 seat capacity. With only minimal feedback so far, here are some noteworthy examples of the global impact of ZMF. In Vancouver, Canada they booked an 820 seat theater but had about 2,000 people show up! Ryan, the coordinator, had to turn hundreds away and fortunately was able to secure another 700 seat venue for a few days later. In Serbia, the coordinator Milan, had a 400 seat theater overflowing with people, many people sitting on the floor and in the aisles! They "had" to book additional screenings to meet the demand. Bruno from Brazil is reporting over capacity crowds and booked new screenings in larger venues. Natalija, the Croatian coordinator, had sell out crowds with professors, scientists and media in attendance and requests to interview her. Stefan in Denmark and Seth in the Netherlands have both had press and public screenings that included former members of Parliament, scientists and professors as well as media with interviews. In Russia, the theaters finally caught the buzz about the film and have agreed to screen in 2 theaters, which were virtually impossible to secure before. South Africa had overflow capacity and booked additional screenings. Rishi from India, has reported our largest venue at 2,000 seats at Goa University. Malak, our Palestinian coordinator, will be screening at the Ebdaa' Institution at the Al-Dehesha Refugee Camp in the West Bank. Federico, the Italian coordinator, had arguably the biggest TV celebrity in Italy, Paolo Bonolis, attend the Rome screening and publicly express his love for ZMF. He wants to dedicate an episode of his programme, "Il senso della vita", to the Zeitgeist Movement. His show reached up to 8 million viewers and is among the most watched in Italy. Dozens of broadcasting requests have come in for post Jan 25th television broadcast, as well as film festival interest. The Los Angeles premiere hosted by Artivist Film Festival on Jan. 15th was a big hit with a sell out crowd of 845! There was audience applause throughout the film and a standing ovation at the end. Michael Ruppert was in attendance and Lili Haydn, whose music was featured in parts of ZMF, as well as noteworthy progressives. LA's most popular independent radio station KPFK was filming the event and interviewed Peter and guests. Artivist filmed the Q & A with Peter and that will be available online soon. This has developed to possibly be the largest independent global theatrical premiere, covering the most languages, countries and locations. The movie and the movement are on the global radar now and your efforts are a huge part of this success! *INTERNET RELEASE: The Online Release is set for Jan. 25th but could happen sooner depending on the level of theatrical interest. This delay is to ensure that the non-profit events are sustained enough so the parties who have taken on the risk can hopefully make back their expenses. Any money obtained otherwise goes towards their Chapter's work - specifically ZDAY 2011 *DVD RELEASE: The DVD release will occur in late Jan., including the free, full resolution, dual layer DVD Torrent download in 30 language subtitles. A 5$ DVD is also available from zeitgeistmovingforward.com and is now available for Pre-Order: http://zeitgeistmovingforward.com/dvd Please note that while Peter offers his films for free online viewing and free download, with no restriction on non-sale duplication/distribution and free public display - he simply cannot continue creating such media unless some do, indeed, actually buy the DVD. So, please respect this if you care about the Zeitgeist Film Project. The DVD is a dual layer, 8 gig with the full 2 hour and 41 min film, in a standard, sealed case; offered for 75% less than the commercial price of most DVDs. This film cost over $200,000 to create and if you want to see Zeitgeist IV (!), you will need to help him recover from this huge work. *PRESS/MEDIA: Please submit all photos, videos, press, local promotional materials and quotable statistics to zmf(a)thezeitgeistmovement.com. We are going to compile all your materials into a virtual "scrapbook" to be posted on the ZMF site. At a glance, this will illustrate the reach and success of this film release. Once the premiere period ends Jan 25th and I get the final counts in, I will compile our potentially record-breaking numbers and post that information on the site. Have a look at the global map and see the span of locations ZMF is screening: www.zeitgeistmovingforward.com/zmap Listen to a recent interview (Jan 19th) with Peter Joseph on KPFK Radio about the explosion of this film across the world: http://archive.kpfk.org/parchive/mp3/kpfk_110119_150030goharrison.MP3 Thank you all for your tremendous work in making this film such a global sensation- we are doing it!! :) Cheers, Sharleen Global Release Coordinator "Zeitgeist: Moving Forward" www.zeitgeistmovingforward.com zmf(a)thezeitgeistmovement.com

I think we should review it. What do you think? http://tiny.cc/g4mzz>http://tiny.cc/g4mzz @ is For Activism examines the transformation of politics through digital media, including digital television, online social networking and mobile computing. Joss Hands maps out how political relationships have been reconfigured and new modes of cooperation, deliberation and representation have emerged. This analysis is applied to the organisation and practice of alternative politics, showing how they have developed and embraced the new political and technological environment. Hands offers a comprehensive critical survey of existing literature, as well as an original perspective on networks and political change. He includes many case studies including the anti-war and global justice movements, peer production, user created TV and 'Twitter' activism. @ is For Activism is essential for activists and students of politics and media. -- Franco Iacomella -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/p2presearch_listcultures.org Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Think tank: http://www.asianforesightinstitute.org/index.php/eng/The-AFI -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://listcultures.org/mailman/listinfo/p2presearch_listcultures.org Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Think tank: http://www.asianforesightinstitute.org/index.php/eng/The-AFI

Fwd: Brazilian Digital Culture Re: obrigada

Dear friends, May I ask a special effort to support our Brazilian friends, where the free cultural policies are now in danger, by spreading this news item across your networks: The link: http://bit.ly/hC4uVb Please use twitter hashtags #brazil ; #reformaLDA Michel In Brazil, IP Counter-Revolution has begun: Ministry of Culture starts undoing Lula’s legacy<http://blog.p2pfoundation.net/in-brazil-ip-counter-revolution-has-begun-min…> [image: photo of Michel Bauwens] Michel Bauwens 21st January 2011 Really bad news is coming from Brazil, where the new Minister of Culture is starting to undo creative commons licenses, negate years of work resulting from civil society participation held as exemplary at a global level, and undo the vision that was started by Gilberto Bil, continued under his successors, and strongly endorsed by former President Lula who always strongly supported free software and free culture. The evidence starts coming in that Ms. Ana de Hollanda is intent on restoring the primacy of IP monopolies in the purest neoliberal fashion. However, public pressure, including from the global free culture movement, could stil make a difference at this early stage of reset. Please spread the word via twitter’s hashtag #reformaLDA. The original article is at http://pedroparanagua.net/2011/01/20/brazils-copyright-reform-the-tip-of-th…. Full copy of a summary of developments<http://pedroparanagua.net/2011/01/20/brazils-copyright-reform-the-tip-of-th…>by *Pedro Paranuaga*: “Who follows the Twitter hash tag #reformaLDA (copyright law reform) or #novaLDA (new copyright law) is noticing in the past few weeks an avalanche of manifestations against, and rumors on Brazil’s new Minister of Culture: Ana de Hollanda. Sister of acclaimed composer and singer Chico Buarque de Hollanda, Ms. Ana de Hollanda is herself a singer and composer as well. As soon as Brazil’s new president Mrs. Dilma Rousseff nominated Ms. Ana de Hollanda for the Ministry of Culture, which is responsible for Brazil’s copyright agenda, several academics, activists and civil society have been voicing concerns against the twist of policy that she might implement from now on. Over 1,000 signatures have been gathered thus far on an Open Letter from the Brazilian civil society that is concerned that “the broad and open participation by society might be replaced by “commissions of notables” or “lawyers” giving their biased views on the subject”. Nearly 8,000 comments or proposals (in Portuguese) to Brazil’s new copyright draft bill have been made on an open public consultation undertaken by the Minister of Culture in 2010 to reform Brazil’s copyright law. Now this civil society group points that “Brazilian society and all who had the opportunity to manifest themselves over the past years can not and should not be substituted, overlooked or ignored. The reform of the copyright law should proceed based on the opinions that were already widely expressed. This is the republican duty of the Ministry of Culture, regardless of personal opinions of those who run it.” Former Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil, was widely known for his enthusiasm and support to open culture, free and open source software, Creative Commons licenses, collaboration & remix culture, and so on. His successor Juca Ferreira, although not with the same charisma, gave continuation to Gil’s policies. It would make sense that whoever would be the new Minister of Culture in Brazil, he/she would put forward a continuation from the previous eight years led by former president’s Lula mandate, after all president Rousseff was Lula’s henchwoman. However, that may not be the case. Some rumors are becoming clearer. Yesterday, while Campus Party Brasil 2011, one of the largest technology and hacker events in Latin America was taking place in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s Ministry of Culture withdrew the Creative Commons license that it had on its website for the past few years. Although the website now shows this message: “License Terms: The content of this website, produced by the Ministry of Culture, may be reproduced, provided the origin is mentioned”, which in the end is very similar to the intention of a CC license, it seems that the tip of the iceberg has emerged. Ironically, even in the U.S., where most of the pressure from content owners comes from, the White House uses one of the broadest Creative Commons licenses — and not only for the content produced by the government, but also for any content posted by anyone on their website. It is still early to know exactly to what direction Brazil’s new Minister will head. Things don’t look good, nonetheless.” ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jose Murilo <josemurilo(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, Jan 20, 2011 at 7:56 PM Subject: Brazilian Digital Culture Re: obrigada To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> Cc: Silke Helfrich <Silke.Helfrich(a)gmx.de> Dear Michel, I tried to DM this one to you, but you do not follow me:-) #Brazil ’s #Copyright Reform: the tip of the iceberg? http://t.co/EPHmTW2#reformaLDA It's a fine report on what's going on in Brazil with the new MinC. The first sign is taking out the CC license from the Ministry's institutional website, something we put there in 2004, pioneering a move followed by others in the government -- the presidential blog today is CC. We think it would be nice to reverberate 'the tip of the iceberg' internationally, in support of the innovation brought by the Brazilian digital public policies. Maybe we can still educate the new minister on the importance of this project. We need this external support right now in order to mobilize politicians in the effort to save the Brazilian Digital Culture. By the way, I am writing in Quora about it: http://www.quora.com/Jose-Murilo/How-is-Brazils-approach-to-Digital-Culture…
