Putin's Russia, government by spectacle, and its corrosive effects on global democracy are the focus of this month's headline interview with Timothy Snyder. We then discuss the changing politics of the European Parliament as 2019 elections edge closer and investigate what ending plastic pollution will really require. To help you unwind in the summer heat, we also bring you a round-up of drug policy and reform around Europe, as well as selected translations with more available online. Fwd: [commoning] CfR: "Challenge Artificial Intelligence!"

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Krystian Woznicki via Commoning <commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org> Date: Tue, Jul 31, 2018 at 10:58 AM Subject: [commoning] CfR: "Challenge Artificial Intelligence!" To: <commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org> Hello Commoners, the Berliner Gazette is launching the Call for Registration (CfR) for the BG annual conference, this year entitled AMBIENT REVOLTS. You can register now for five different workshop tracks that will be exploring political agency in times of autocrats and AI. All info below and on this website: https://bit.ly/2mXd0bJ Spread the word on twitter by re-tweeting this: https://twitter.com/rosaluxstiftung/status/1022515232625909760 Please forward the message below! Best wishes, Krystian --- *CHALLENGE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE* Join the workshops at the AMBIENT REVOLTS conference! Register by October 20! The growing interconnectedness of everyone and everything is transforming our world into an unprecedented techno-social environment. The boundaries between atmosphere and politics are being suspended; already, tiny ruptures can cause cascade-like repercussions – think of cyber-attacks or stock market crashes, right-wing resentment or hashtag-based protest. Such ambient revolts are increasingly driven by artificial intelligence (AI) – involving human interaction but seemingly beyond human oversight. Set against this backdrop, the conference poses the questions: What are the techno-social logics of both regressive and repressive tendencies? What are emancipatory movements up against? What potential do micro-political acts have in day-to-day life? What regulations of automated systems at the macro level will enable democracy to emerge in the age of AI? The Berliner Gazette conference will explore these questions in the context of performances, lectures and workshops. The 18th edition of this annual Berliner Gazette event will be held for the second time in collaboration with the ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics and will take place on November 7-10, 2018. *Register + join workshops* The conference workshops will bring together more than 100 activists from all over the world. The BG will invite key actors from the international scene to form the core of the five workshop tracks, and will issue an open call for the general public to register. This open call for registration targets (up-and-coming) hackers, journalists, activists and researchers. A limited number of participants is able to register by contacting the following email: info(a)berlinergazette.de Deadline: October 20. Registration fee: 50 Euro, incl. catering. Please note: As the five workshops will be running in parallel, everyone is invited to commit to a single track. On November 8-10, the workshops will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The conference hosts will provide catering throughout the entire conference, including a warm lunch. A series of guided city walks is planned for lunch breaks! To tackle the key issues of the conference, five parallel workshop tracks will offer five different approaches for a pragmatic critique of citizenship as a framework for political participation, addressing the following issues: “Re-Coding Populism?”, “Challenging the Capitalocene”, “Involuntary Community”, “Unlearning Learning”, “Hacking the Urban Backend”. The workshop groups will communicate before the conference in order to flesh out the workshop design collaboratively. Led by experienced group leaders, participants will be invited to come up with possible answers to the questions outlined in this project paper. The results will be made available as online resources by Berliner Gazette: they may include position papers, multimedia storytelling projects and collections of ideas. *Workshop Tracks* *Re-Coding Populism* Right-wing populism (and populism in general) thrives on social media, which amplifies the voices of the extremist few rather than the voices of the many. Can the top-down logics of demagogy be reversed or even transgressed for democratic ends? This workshop tackles the rise of right-wing populism in the context of social media and explores the potential of proto-populist bottom-up approaches such as liquid democracy. *Challenging the Capitalocene* Capitalism has turned most of its operations into a quasi-automated matter. If algorithms operate according to discriminatory categories (race, ethnicity, gender, etc.), then how does discrimination play out in capitalism's automated processes? What are strategies against dehumanization? This workshop tackles the connex of automation, dehumanization and discrimination in AI-driven capitalism. *Involuntary Community* Under the conditions of all-encompassing interconnectedness, right-wing populist moods can spread in a quasi-contagious fashion. What role do system errors, glitches and other (planned or unplanned) disruptions play in this context? Can the surprise element of unforeseen (dis-)connectedness gain a political valence? This workshop explores new potentials for emerging solidarity and community. *Unlearning Learning* Self-learning systems define our age, thereby changing also the domain of learning. AI-driven social media are coming to provide pseudo-classrooms. Meanwhile traditional media are losing their authority as ‘educational institutions’. What is the present and future of pedagogy? What kind of unlearning needs to be done vis-à-vis self-learning systems? This workshops explores the politics of (un-)learning in the context of AI and self-learning systems. *Hacking the Urban Backend* In today’s smart city the urbanite is challenged to negotiate her/his entanglement with the programmed environment. What does this mean for political action? Is public space still available or is the arena of political intervention being relocated to the invisibilized backend of the city? This workshop politicizes the rise of the smart city and searches for means of appropriation. *More info* http://ambient-revolts.berlinergazette.de AMBIENT REVOLTS is the 18th annual conference of the Berliner Gazette. This project is a cooperation with ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics, funded by the German Federal Agency for Civic Education/ bpb, Creative Europe Programme of the European Union and the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. *Contact us* info(a)berlinergazette.de -- -------------------------------------------------------------- BG – Berliner Gazette | since 1999 | http://berlinergazette.de -------------------------------------------------------------- DOCU OF LATEST BG PROJECTS: FRIENDLY FIRE – BG Annual Conference 2017 https://berlinergazette.de/friendly-fire SIGNALS – Exhibition of the Snowden Files http://berlinergazette.de/signals -------------------------------------------------------------- BG BOOKS OUT NOW @ DP: FUGITIVE BELONGING https://diamondpaper.net/title_27 A FIELD GUIDE TO THE SNOWDEN FILES http://diamondpaper.net/title_26 AFTER THE PLANES http://diamondpaper.net/title_25 -------------------------------------------------------------- _______________________________________________ Commoning mailing list Commons-Institut e.V. Fwd: On Climate Crisis, Social Collapse and Deep Adaptation ... this is worth pondering
by Michel Bauwens 30 Jul '18

30 Jul '18

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Daryl Taylor <taylor.daryl.r(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Jul 30, 2018 at 12:02 PM Subject: On Climate Crisis, Social Collapse and Deep Adaptation ... this is worth pondering To: Daryl Taylor <taylor.daryl.r(a)gmail.com> *Link to Full Paper by Dr Jem Bendell* http://www.lifeworth.com/deepadaptation.pdf *Extracted Summary:* Professor Jem Bendell discusses runaway, rather than linear, climate change and how non-linear (and potentially exponential) changes are of central importance to understanding climate change as they suggest that impacts will be far more rapid and severe than predictions based on linear projections, that multiple forcings beyond carbon dioxide will come into play and that the changes no longer correlate with the rate of anthropogenic carbon emissions. He describes how non-linear changes in our environment trigger uncontrollable impacts on human habitat and agriculture, with subsequent complex impacts on social, economic and political systems. He focuses on opportunities such as agricultural transformation and eco-system restoration. While he mentions climate change having negative impacts on ecosystems, changes in seasons, melting permafrost methane release, temperatures extremes, flood and drought, he doesn't mention fire. Geoengineering and natural geoengineering are mentioned and contrasted with the momentum of disruptive and uncontrollable climate change, and it's potential human impact: starvation, settlement destruction, mass migration, disease, war and extinction are all entertained. He reports on how paternalistic climate and social scientists warn against and censor discussion on the likelihood and nature of societal collapse due to climate change, labelling it as irresponsible, in that it might trigger hopelessness among the general lay public. He states this is related to the non-populist anti-politics technocratic attitude that pervades contemporary environmentalism and frames our challenge as one of encouraging people to try harder to be nicer and better rather than coming together in solidarity to either undermine or overthrow a system that demands we participate in environmental and societal degradation. There is a good discussion on the dynamics of denial which references “interpretative denial” i.e., accepting certain climate facts but interpreting them in a way that makes them “safer” to our personal psychology, and “implicative denial” i.e., recognising the troubling implications of climate facts but responding by busying ourselves on activities that do not arise from a full assessment of the situation. Interestingly, collapse denial is suggested to be more common among sustainability experts than the general public, given the typical allegiance of professionals to the incumbent social and economic structures they benefit from. Another barrier identified is that there is no obvious institutional self-interest in articulating the probability or inevitability of environmental and societal collapse. He highlights how our interests in civility, praise and belonging within a professional community can censor those of us who seek to communicate uncomfortable truths in memorable ways. His review of a range of projects and studies suggests that the idea we “experts” need to be careful about what to tell “them” the “unsupported public” may be a narcissistic delusion in need of immediate remedy. In terms of framing, Bendell has chosen to interpret the available information as indicating inevitable collapse, probable catastrophe and possible extinction. He has found that inviting his students to consider collapse as inevitable, catastrophe as probable and extinction as possible, has not led to apathy or depression, but rather to a shedding of concern for conforming to the status quo, and a mix of creativity about what to focus on and discombobulation. He then posits a Deep Adaptation Agenda, emphasising that we must look more critically at how people and organisations are framing the situation and the limitations such framings impose. Given that analysts are concluding that a societal collapse is inevitable, he suggests the following question becomes important: What are the valued norms and behaviours human societies will want to maintain, relinquish, restore and rediscover, as they seek to survive? Resilience asks us “how do we keep what we really want to keep?” Relinquishment asks us “what do we need to let go of in order to not make matters worse?” Restoration asks us “what can we bring back to help us with the coming difficulties and tragedies?” Additionally, I add rediscovery might ask us what can we dig up from archaic times of yore that may have utility in post-collapse or catastrophic scenarios? He claims the era of “sustainable development” as unifying concept and goal is now ending and Deep Adaptation is an explicitly post-sustainability framing. He states the importance of recognising our complicity and posits that the West’s response to environmental issues has been restricted by the dominance of neoliberal economics since the 1970s. This led us to hyper-individualist, market fundamentalist, incremental and atomistic approaches. By hyper-individualist, he means a focus on individual action as consumers, switching light bulbs or buying sustainable furniture, rather than promoting political action as engaged citizens. By market fundamentalist, he means a focus on market mechanisms like the complex, costly and largely useless carbon cap and trade systems, rather than exploring what more government intervention could achieve. By incremental, he means a focus on celebrating small steps forward such as a company publishing a sustainability report, rather than strategies designed for the speed and scale of change suggested by the science. By atomistic, he means a focus on seeing climate action as a separate issue from the governance of markets, finance and banking, rather than exploring what kind of economic system could permit or enable sustainability. In terms of academic research and teaching he suggests asking “How might research findings inform efforts for a more massive and urgent pursuit of resilience, relinquishment, restoration (and rediscovery) in the face of social collapse? and "How can we best use MOOCs to widely disseminate the most useful economic re-localisation and community development strategies? He emphasises the need for citizens to access information and networks on how to shift their livelihoods and lifestyles. He adds Local Governments will need similar help on how to develop the capabilities today that will help their local communities to collaborate, not fracture, during a collapse. At the international level, there is the need to work on how to responsibly address the wider fallout from collapsing societies, including the ongoing challenges of refugee support and the securing of dangerous industrial and nuclear sites at the moment of a societal collapse. He states he has explored the emotional and psychological implications of this new awareness of a societal collapse being likely in our own lifetimes in a reflective essay on the spiritual implications of climate despair. His final recommendations are narrow amounting to suggestions for academic researchers, teachers and students, although he does say he is developing a separate work for managers, policy makers and lay persons. He encourages communities to engage deeply with the three (or four) guiding questions offered up earlier. He concludes by reiterating the redundancy of the reformist approach to sustainable development and related fields of corporate sustainability that has underpinned the approach of many professionals, opting instead for a new approach which explores how to reduce harm and not make matters worse, informed by his Deep Adaptation Agenda, which is not as yet well explicated, but certainly seems open for more reflection and collaborative contributions. -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: [commoning] Fwd: FINAL PUSH: MA Design for cultural commons
by Michel Bauwens 30 Jul '18

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Silke Helfrich via Commoning <commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org> Date: Wed, Jul 25, 2018 at 8:26 PM Subject: [commoning] Fwd: FINAL PUSH: MA Design for cultural commons To: COMMONING LIste engl <commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org> -------- Weitergeleitete Nachricht -------- Betreff: FINAL PUSH: MA Design for cultural commons Datum: Wed, 25 Jul 2018 19:13:06 +0100 Von: Torange Khonsari <torange(a)publicworksgroup.net> <torange(a)publicworksgroup.net> Antwort an: Torange Khonsari <torange(a)publicworksgroup.net> <torange(a)publicworksgroup.net> An: commonswatch(a)lists.p2pfoundation.net Dear all Just very quickly to say the UK Commons Assembly at Tate hosted by myself and Tim was really positive and commoners wanted another session in Autumn this year to action some of the points. We had such a great day and the Autumn follow up will have more of us involved in organisation. We will keep you posted. We should have the Assembly next year in another part of the country hosted by others who have already emailed us i.e Scotland. This email is also a plea to please help me to push the MA again as we are 1 student short. Here are the details again, always in awe of the commons generosity. My best wishes to you all Torange *APPLY NOW FOR ADMISSION SEPTEMBER 2018* *MA: Design for Cultural Commons - **The Cass **(London Metropolitan University)* Although a timely model of practice there are few courses dedicated to the Commons and even fewer for Cultural Commons. This course is not only to reward you with a post graduate qualification but also to support the movement of the commons through expanding its practitioners and its network. The course is 1 year full time and 2 years part-time (the part-time route allows you to work to earn money and set up your future organisation) *What are Commons and why are they relevant today: * The Commons discourse is informed by ideas, which have been around for hundreds of years. In current context of much *inequality*, the Commons discourse offers alternatives and models of sharing. Commons are about the assets that everyone should have the right to, forming resources that should benefit all, rather than being enclosed to just a few. *What you achieve:* In this course you'll learn how resources are shared, protected, reclaimed, created, governed, used and distributed without overuse and abuse. You will create and develop a *live* *project* (anything from a novel to a supermarket) for your new *operating organisation. *The organisation will be formed, it’s governance designed, its financial structure set out and all policies written using Commoning as a model. You will gain expertise in applying creative thinking towards asset sharing, mutual resources, self-governance and peer to peer economic models. Collaborating with cultural institutions and government agencies which we will facilitate, will enable you to develop related policies, projects, collaborations and open up new networks to position your Commons organisation. In the UK, co-production is being referred to in some government policies and tenders and the commons are currently being discussed in policies in the EU parliament. Beyond teaching you to initiate your commons projects and practice, you'll learn how to raise funds, and make your common sustainable in the long term. On completion of the course, students will have an operational practice/organisation. There will be an array of optional modules, ranging from comparative public policy to social theories and citizenship, micro-economies and digital media. This is complemented with art and design teaching, visual communication and performance to architecture and photography. There is the opportunity to tailor your learning and construct your own unique curriculum. t.khonsari(a)londonmet.ac.uk *Apply by following the link: **http://www.londonmet.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate/design-for-cultural-commons---ma/ <http://www.londonmet.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate/design-for-cultural-commons…>* _______________________________________________ Commoning mailing list Commons-Institut e.V. Fwd: RIMPAC Makes Its Mark in Hawaii
by Michel Bauwens 30 Jul '18

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Margo Okazawa-Rey <mor(a)sfsu.edu> Date: Sun, Jul 29, 2018 at 2:11 PM Subject: RIMPAC Makes Its Mark in Hawaii To: GlobalUFoundingMembers <globalufoundingmembers(a)googlegroups.com> Dear Comrades Please read the article about global significance of RIMPAC. Most Americans and many around the world have little know ledge of RIMPAC, the military exercises or "war games" that the US conducts around the world month after month, year after year. Most Americans have never heard of *RIMPAC *(Rim of the Pacific) exercise which has taken place in Hawaii and California every two years since 1971. The media gives it almost zero attention so, unless you live in Hawaii, you probably have never heard of RIMPAC. But considering the impact of these exercises and the implications they hold for people around the world. RIMPAC 2018 is happening now in Hawaii and will end on August 2nd. RIMPAC Makes Its Mark in Hawaii <https://thediplomat.com/2018/07/rimpac-makes-its-mark-in-hawaii/%20> For some the international military exercises are a highlight; for others they’re a stain on the islands. By Jon Letman July 25, 2018 By any measure, RIMPAC 2018 is huge. This year’s Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise in Hawaii and southern California includes the military forces of 25 nations and 25,000 personnel. For 37 days this summer, 200 aircraft, 46 ships, and five submarines are training to cooperate in conflict, with an array of joint exercises <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RggbQ2fYUKs> in the air, on land, and at sea. Read the full article *here* <https://thediplomat.com/2018/07/rimpac-makes-its-mark-in-hawaii/%20>. -- Margo Okazawa-Rey Professor Emerita, SFSU “One cannot live with sighted eyes and feeling heart and not know and read of the miseries which affect the world.” Lorraine Hansberry "Maybe the purpose of being here, wherever we are, is to increase the durability and occasions of love among and between peoples."
