I think they are on both sides, they are drawn to autonomy and are hesitating between the market and the commons, while the most alienated turn to the alt.right or the identitarian left, not much different from the labour movement and it splits <g> On Tue, Aug 7, 2018 at 8:25 PM Bob Haugen <bob.haugen(a)gmail.com> wrote: > I read the articles and have been following John Boyd and his acolytes > (eg John Robb) since the old distributed objects mailing list. > > Thinking about how to respond. hi David, I may see this a bit differently than yourself, i.e. the market itself can have extractive and/or generative forms, and the commons need to interact with the market and the commons, in order for the market to work for the commons, it needs to be a generative market, i.e. a non-capitalist or post-capitalist market form or at least a suitable adapted capitalist market form that is kept at arms length a commons sector can use 'communist principles' internally, as it does in open source, everybody can contribute and use, or it can use 'socialist principles' internally (reciprocal relationships and allocations); but externally, in this society, it cannot escape relations with the market, now in the blockchain space, the commons are geared towards the market, in ways that seem acceptable to most actors in these sectors, as they do for most of open source spaces; but for us, that is not sufficient, since these arrangements still generate major exclusions (higher gini coefficients than normal market relationships) and ecological damages (relatively higher than external); this being said, blockchain economics are tilted far more in favour of labour, however, at the price of exploiting 'external labor' so we favour different arrangement, a la Enspiral, in which the market and capital, sustains and grows the commoners and their resources but you never talk about commos sectors in your work but about networks hence for you, what is important, is that the corporate market form is subsumed to the network form, i.e. there are much less possibilities for vertically integrated oligopolies; in blockchain economies all market players are subsumed to the new network form, which is a hybrid of markets and commons, but they are not completely subsumed to the commons sector as such nevertheless, what is already shows is that a network form , allied with a strong commons element, is for market forces, already more competitive than market forms without the commons, that surely, must be significant enough for your TIMN framework, open source was the first wave of this, blockchain is the second, and the platform economy is also a form of this at a more marginal local level, urban commons are also playing a role in this transformation but for a commons sector to thrive as such, major societal reforms would be necessary, i.e. a shift away from extractive financing, to generative financing models this is the price to pay for saving the planet, otherwise we are doomed On Tue, Aug 7, 2018 at 12:29 AM David Ronfeldt <ronfeldt(a)icloud.com> wrote: > Your email refers to an article about applying blockchain to business > actors in a market economy. positioning ourselves in the global civil war
by Michel Bauwens 04 Aug '18

04 Aug '18

this article by Jordan Greenhall merits a slow, thoughtful and perhaps more than once, reading, this article about the larved civil war between the 'Blue Church' (neoliberal establishment , including its progressive allies) and the Red Insurgency (anti-globalist populists) is also a war of epistemologies and methodlogies. But this begs for a third force, i.e. a progressive use of collective intelligence for fair and sustainable cosmo-local civilisation. https://medium.com/deep-code/situational-assessment-2018-the-calm-before-th… -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

eco-systemic supply chains are on their way
by Michel Bauwens 04 Aug '18

04 Aug '18

I hope this can impress some people that are still on the sidelines of this major earthquake, to understand the significance of what is occuring right now, a fundamental re-ordering of the capitalist economy under new models: first of all, see this article, that shows successfull blockchain trials for supply chains, https://which-50.com/commbank-and-logistics-giants-complete-blockchain-trad… ? and what it all means in terms of industrial structures see the article quoted below, but in fact, I don't think their analysis goes far enough, because in the ethereum networks, corporates are already subsumed to a eco-system consisting not just of companies, but of a multitude of other players, including lots of single individuals: QUOTE Blockchain-Based Corporate V-Networks <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Blockchain-Based_Corporate_V-Networks#mw-head> <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Blockchain-Based_Corporate_V-Networks#p-sear…> *= "V-form networks consist of a number of fully independent companies that effectively operate as one vertically integrated company through blockchain technology".* [1] <https://medium.com/cryptoeconomics-australia/outsourcing-vertical-integrati…> Contents [hide <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Blockchain-Based_Corporate_V-Networks#>] - 1 Contextual Citation <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Blockchain-Based_Corporate_V-Networks#Contex…> - 2 Description <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Blockchain-Based_Corporate_V-Networks#Descri…> - 3 Example <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Blockchain-Based_Corporate_V-Networks#Example> - 3.1 The IBM and Maersk TradeTech <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Blockchain-Based_Corporate_V-Networks#The_IB…> Contextual Citation[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Blockchain-Based_Corporate_V…> ] "A blockchain economy will have more, smaller firms linked together by protocols. ... It’s worth pointing out that these networks are inherently global, and any regulatory questions global as well." - Chris Berg, Sinclair Davidson and Jason Potts [2] <https://medium.com/cryptoeconomics-australia/outsourcing-vertical-integrati…> Description[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Blockchain-Based_Corporate_V…> ] "The Nobel laureate Oliver Williamson distinguishes between U-form companies and M-form companies. Traditional U-form companies are unitary — their units are divided by business process (for instance, accounting, human resources, component manufacturing, assembly) and are not treated as separate cost centres. M-form companies are multidivisional — their units are self-contained divisions that report profits and losses to an umbrella central body. They’re fully owned by a parent company, but they tend to have their own business services (accounting and human resources departments, for instance) and even market relationships. But now we see a new corporate form — the V-form network — made possible because thanks to the application of distributed ledger technology to supply chain problems. These V-form networks consist of a number of fully independent companies that effectively operate as one vertically integrated company through blockchain technology, coordinated and supplied by a third party. This is a big change to the nature of the firm. We can already see V-form networks in the real world. They date as far back as January. It is surprising the economics community haven’t noticed them yet. ... Blockchains can work to coordinate supply chains without the need for either (traditional) vertical integration or regulation. The vertical integration is outsourced to a distributed ledger. The blockchain provides the managerial service that coordinates each ‘unit’ (that is, firm) in the supply chain. Regulators in any country can deal any firm in the supply chain as if it was a small unit of a larger, global company. Each firm in the supply chain get the benefits of vertical integration through a network rather than a hierarchy. ... In the V-form network, the blockchain’s token establishes the consortium, and incentivizes cooperative behaviour. The token also serves to move rents around the network. In this way, the blockchain provides a market mechanism to solve the sort of bargaining problems described by another Nobel laureate, Ronald Coase, that may occur as the network operates. Outsourced vertical integration could be applied to many industries that are now integrated. Energy firms that currently integrate the exploration, production, generation, and retail of electricity might be better decomposed, with blockchains and tokens taking the place of head offices. The token economy, rather than energy regulators, could make decisions about the distribution of rents around the network." ( https://medium.com/cryptoeconomics-australia/outsourcing-vertical-integrati… ) Example[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Blockchain-Based_Corporate_V…> ]The IBM and Maersk TradeTech[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Blockchain-Based_Corporate_V…> ] Chris Berg, Sinclair Davidson and Jason Potts: "Two weeks into 2018, IBM and the shipping giant Maersk announced a joint venture to develop a digital supply chain management system on their Hyperledger blockchain platform. Hyperledger is a private blockchain which requires permission to access. In a previous Cryptoeconomics piece, we described how international trade is an information problem. As goods are shipped around the world, they are accompanied by information — really stacks of paperwork — that describe their provenance, destinations, regulatory and tax liabilities and so on. In the IBM-Maersk system, each firm and bureaucracy in the supply chain — producers, shippers, port authorities, regulators, importers, retailers — will access and update a shared blockchain ledger containing all the information needed by each organisation. And each organisation would have access to that information everywhere, ensuring complete visibility on where goods are in the world and which economic and regulatory hurdles they next need to overcome." Facebook‘s latest announcement that it deleted 290,000 robot accounts from the Russian Internet Research Agency (IRA) in St. Petersburg, Russia, also noted that their propaganda had already reached 126 million other users and that 28% of the robot sites taken down were still operating on others sites, including Twitter (with 20 times more propaganda accounts than actual human users); Reddit, Tumbler and others. The experts at this hearing called for immediate action to expose unmarked fake political ads targeting swing states, and to counter the sleeper accounts still working to subvert the USA’s November 2018 elections. ~Hazel Henderson, Editor“ "Senate Intelligence Committee hold hearing-Social Media Foreign Influence" <https://www.c-span.org/video/?449088-1/senate-intelligence-committee-holds-…> -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: The New York Times just published a blockbuster story about climate change
by Michel Bauwens 02 Aug '18

I don't know if I'm right in this, but I seem to sense a change in awareness of climate change, perhaps the result of the accumlating devastating news ? ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Ryan Fortune <ryan.fortune2012(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, Aug 2, 2018 at 12:40 PM Subject: The New York Times just published a blockbuster story about climate change To: <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> But fails to name and shame climate villains... <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> *The New York Times Fails to Name and Shame Climate Villains <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>* *What it gets right and wrong in its blockbuster story.* Rebecca Leber Mother Jones 1 August 2018 The New York Times Magazine has just published an ambitious and heavily-promoted issue entitled “Losing Earth,” <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> which is entirely devoted to telling a single complicated story: How the world missed its window to address climate change. Nathaniel Rich’s historical narrative looks at the politicians, scientists, public officials, and others who, from 1979 to 1989, were central to raising the alarm on a subject that scientists had already been studying for years. *In revealing the choices they did and did not make, Rich pinpoints the markers that led us to today, in which the attempt to address climate change is a story of failure. George Steinmetz’s photography of receding glaciers and extreme weather around the world accompanying the issue is a window to the consequences of largely ignoring the early warnings. Today, we’re in what Rich says is the “second chapter — call it The Reckoning. There can be no understanding of our current and future predicament without understanding why we failed to solve this problem when we had the chance.”* Thirty years ago, in his famous testimony to Congress, NASA climate scientist James Hansen warned that we were running out of time to address the consequences of uncontrolled greenhouse gas emissions. “Major greenhouse climate changes are a certainty,” he had written. “By the 2010s [in every scenario], essentially the entire globe has very substantial warming.” Rich’s story starts even before that testimony, in 1979, when environmental activist Rafe Pomerance discovered mentions of the effect of rising carbon emissions on the future climate in a generally ignored EPA report on coal. He wondered why no one else seemed to be talking about it. From there, Rich unspools a detailed history of how NASA scientist James Hansen and a number of scientists, activists, and politicians, organized around global warming, and how others, namely President George H.W. Bush’s chief of staff John Sununu, tried to scuttle progress. Notably, almost everyone in the story is a man with the exception of some peripheral characters — a female scientist who speaks up in a meeting, and the men’s wives. Rich concludes with the first major global conference in Noordwijk, the Netherlands, in 1989, which became the first in a very long series of meetings that have avoided taking binding action to slash emissions. This all took place before partisan lines had calcified. Indeed, by today’s standards, there was unheard-of agreement across party lines. George H.W. Bush’s Environmental Protection Agency chief William Reilly and Republicans like Rhode Island Rep. John Chafee were early leaders, even though today we mostly remember the role of then-Tennessee Rep. Al Gore, who has since become the embodiment of climate change activism. The early criticisms of the story, some of which came up at a preview event the Times hosted on Tuesday night for a few dozen scientists, academics, sources, and reporters, zero in on Rich’s unwillingness to assign clear blame. He writes: *A common boogeyman today is the fossil-fuel industry, which in recent decades has committed to playing the role of villain with comic-book bravado. An entire subfield of climate literature has chronicled the machinations of industry lobbyists, the corruption of scientists and the propaganda campaigns that even now continue to debase the political debate, long after the largest oil-and-gas companies have abandoned the dumb show of denialism. But the coordinated efforts to bewilder the public did not begin in earnest until the end of 1989. During the preceding decade, some of the largest oil companies, including Exxon and Shell, made good-faith efforts to understand the scope of the crisis and grapple with possible solutions.* Al Gore, who was then chair of an oversight science committee, clearly saw the need to simplify the narrative in order to both dramatize environmental stories and create compelling political theater. “Environmental and health stories had all the elements of narrative drama: villains, victims and heroes. In a hearing, you could summon all three, with the chairman serving as narrator, chorus and moral authority,” Rich writes, summarizing Gore’s approach. But Rich doesn’t follow that narrative trope, and he presents the fossil fuel industry as a willing partner in action in those early years. That account is contested by the story’s critics, who point to industry efforts beginning in the 1980s to seed confusion. *In the early 1990s, industry interests including the National Association of Manufacturers and the American Petroleum Institute formally launched the Global Climate Coalition, which was responsible <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> for a series of misinformation campaigns and lobbying efforts to derail action. * *(Please read Inside Climate News‘ blockbuster investigation <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> into Exxon to complement the Times story).* Specifically, he does not target the oil and coal industries that had the most to lose, or conservative Republicans for scuttling action in these early years. And while you do learn how Reagan and Bush officials helped to block and delay action, Rich ends the story by pointing to human folly, not specific actors. Sununu is quoted saying a strict global deal “couldn’t have happened” anyway because of the competing national interests of individual countries. Sununu did have one point. If climate change were as simple as one nation taking the lead — even the nation that is historically the biggest polluter — then slashing emissions would not continue to be so difficult. And there are important omissions. The Times story doesn’t address how a more meaningful agreement in the mold of the earlier Montreal Protocol on chlorofluorocarbons could have changed China’s or India’s course adopting fossil fuels. (Perhaps that could be the subject of another 30,000 words). Much as New York Magazine’s “Uninhabitable Earth” <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> cover story did a year ago, “Losing Earth” expands the conversation to include a broader audience when too few outlets connect the dots <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> to the freakish weather we’re seeing around the globe. In asking how we got to this point, this retelling could provide fuel to both side’s arguments in the new liability lawsuits against big oil companies for their role in creating this mess. The history of climate change non-action in the United States is a difficult one to tell. A few years ago, I asked four leading environmentalists for their theories on exactly what point climate change became so polarized and received four different answers. One person blamed Al Gore for politicizing the issue, while another blamed Big Oil’s misinformation campaign. Even if reading this 30,000-word exploration doesn’t resolve the issue, it goes a long way to filling in more pieces of the puzzle.
