Leaving Facebook for a indeterminate time

Dear George, I don't see how to the moment, since they object to open debate and critical inquiry; and very few people seem to support this with enough force. So it means retreating to what this group finds unobjectionable, and accepting self-censorship, which I don't feel I can do. To be honest, FB was taking too much of my time, and the only reason I stayed was the quality of my audience But then FB forbade to do any crossposting and responding to requests in other groups, then reduced my audience by two-thirds. When on top of that I discover that a strong and vocal minority opposes open inquiry and normalizes racism, it really stops me in my tracks. And you have only seen half of it, because on top of it, the private mails exhorting me to 'choose sides or else', having coming in as well (as well as supportive emails such as yours), but the public support on the site itself has been underwhelming. Right now, I am wounded emotionally, meaning that everytime I go back, it just re-opens it, so for sure, I need to get away at least for some time. But in all likelyhood, I will look for another medium, with more filtering capacity. Michel < Your service is too precious to the community. dear Sharon, Michael et al. Sharon, many thanks for this, and I think your reaction is infused with wisdom and experience, I have found leaving FB very liberating; it had become a burden since a very long time, and it took up half of my working day; I don't think I will be coming back any time soon as I had already decided with my colleagues to look for an alternative. It is unlike to be any corporate owned social media, but either some kind of newsletter (minimising the constant need for interaction) or some kind of integrated environment, we'll see. This may take quite a long time unless something comes along that really appeals to me. In the meantime, it gives a lot more time to read and reflect, Michel On Sat, Aug 18, 2018 at 7:51 PM Michael Lewis <Lewiscccr(a)shaw.ca> wrote: > Wonderfully said Sharon. dear friends, I am leaving FB for a as yet indeterminate period of time, This almost means that my curation duties are hold, since I have no ready alternative. The reasons for my departure are not technical but have to do with a unfortunate polarisation on the p2p foundation's fb group, that I have been unable to steer in a positive momentum, Michel -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: Commercial Trade Exchange Architecture and Operations
by Michel Bauwens 17 Aug '18

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Thomas H. Greco, Jr. <thg(a)mindspring.com> Date: Thu, Aug 16, 2018 at 8:58 PM Subject: Commercial Trade Exchange Architecture and Operations To: <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> A Conversation with Chip Davis and Charlie Davis of the Moxey trade network This newsletter edition contains a single item, one of great importance to the emerging process of direct credit clearing as an adjunct to conventional money payments. ------------------------------ Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser <https://mailchi.mp/92e9e89b3675/commercial-trade-exchange-architecture-and-…> . *Commercial Trade Exchange Architecture and Operations—A Conversation with Chip Davis and Charlie Davis* *Thomas H. Greco, Jr.* Recently, I came across an article about what seems to be a significant development in the commercial trade exchange industry. Published on February 15, 2018, the article, *TradeAuthority rebrands as Moxey with new digital currency, national expansion plans* <https://beyondmoney.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3cbee2e1cfc237bcae4ed…>, tells about the expansion and rebranding of a commercial trade exchange heretofore known as *TradeAuthority.* Operating for the past several years in the Gulf Coast region of the southern United States, TradeAuthority has developed along lines somewhat different from most other trade exchange companies. I’ve had some peripheral knowledge of TradeAuthority for a long time but after reading the article I decided it was time for me to reach out to its founder, Chip Davis, with the intention of gaining a more detailed picture of how they operate and their plans for further development and expansion. The company, now named Moxey <https://beyondmoney.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3cbee2e1cfc237bcae4ed…>, is a network of 14 autonomous member-owned local trade exchanges, member ownership being a unique feature in the commercial trade exchange industry. The key players in the Moxey enterprise are Chip Davis, founder of TradeAuthority and current Executive Vice President of Moxey, Charlie Davis, President of Moxey <https://beyondmoney.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3cbee2e1cfc237bcae4ed…>, and Warren Sager, Moxey Vice President of Operations. *Some Key Questions* In my message to Chip Davis, I posed the following questions: - What degree of autonomy do the various (14) exchanges in your network have? - Is it possible for a member in one exchange to buy/sell directly with a member of another exchange in the network? Does your platform provide that functionality or does the trade need to be pre-arranged with brokers in the two exchanges? - Is there a single Moxey ledger for the entire network or does each exchange have its own? If the latter, how are accounts reconciled among the exchanges, and how often? - Do you participate in UC? [UC is “Universal Currency,” a credit currency that many trade exchanges use to enable their members to buy goods and services from members of different trade exchanges.] - What are the factors you use to allocate lines of credit? How are they weighted? Are all exchanges in the network required to apply the same algorithm in allocating credit lines to their members? - You say, “Moxey intends to be a better Medium of Exchange by removing the concern of inflation.” How does it do that? - Is you online portal a complete marketplace that includes offers and requests? Vendor and client background? Reputation ratings? - When using the app or online portal, is approval of the transaction immediate? - You also say, “It also removes the extreme deflationary dangers that can exist in a purer form of money such as gold.” Can you explain that? - What additional functionality will be achieved by using blockchain? “The major thing behind all currencies is a trust and transparency in knowing the currency is strong and blockchain technology will allow an additional level of transparency,” says Warren Sager, Moxey vice president of operations. “It will allow our currency to become stronger and more trustworthy.” But that does not address the transparency of the credit allocation process. Michel, Thought this blog post might be of interest. Kind regards, Christopher ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Musings <https://www.oftwominds.com/musings-sample.html> My Books <https://www.oftwominds.com/CHS-books.html> Archives <https://www.oftwominds.com/archives.html> Books/Films <https://www.oftwominds.com/books.html> * ------------------------------ *Our "Prosperity" Is Now Dependent on Predatory Globalization* <https://www.oftwominds.com/blogaug18/predatory-globalization8-18.html> *August 15, 2018* *Nowadays, trade and "prosperity" are dependent on currencies that are created out of thin air via borrowing or printing. * *So here's the story explaining why "free" trade and globalization create so much wonderful prosperity for all of us:* I find a nation with cheap labor and no environmental laws anxious to give me cheap land and tax credits, so I move my factory from my high-cost, highly regulated nation to the low-cost nation, and keep all the profits I reap from the move for myself. Yea for free trade, I'm now far wealthier than I was before. *That's the story. Feel better about "free" trade and globalization now?* Oh wait a minute, there's something missing--the part about "prosperity for all of us." Here's labor's share of U.S. GDP, which includes imports and exports, i.e. trade: *Notice how labor's share of the economy tanked once globalization / offshoring kicked into high gear?* Now let's see what happened to corporate profits at that same point in time: *Imagine that--corporate profits skyrocketed once globalization / offshoring kicked into high gear.* Explain that part about "makes us all prosperous" again, because there's no data to support that narrative. *What's interesting about all this is the way that politicians are openly threatening voters with recession if they vote against globalization.* In other words, whatever "prosperity" is still being distributed to the bottom 80% is now dependent on a predatory version of globalization. *Let's rewind to the era of truly free trade, from the late Bronze Age up to the Roman Era.* In the late Bronze Age (circa 1800 to 1200 B.C.), vigorous trade tied together the ancient empires and states of the Mideast and the Mediterranean. In the Roman Era, trade in silk and other luxuries tied China, India, Africa, the Mideast and the Roman Mediterranean together in a vast trading network. In the good old days, merchants paid for goods in gold or silver, as the value of the precious metals were known to all and relatively easy to transport and verify. *Nowadays, trade and "prosperity" are dependent on currencies that are created out of thin air via borrowing or printing.* The problem with gold, in the view of predatory globalization, is that it can't be printed or conjured out of thin air. That won't do, because predatory globalization's primary export is newly printed currencies: dollars, euros, yen and yuan. *This puts every nation that can't print a global reserve currency at an extreme disadvantage.* While the U.S. can conjure "money" out of thin air and trade it for goods, other nations must cough up resources and goods in exchange for the "money," and borrow it at hefty rates of interest if they want to use the global "money" for development or investment. *That leaves them highly vulnerable to foreign exchange fluctuations* which can raise the cost of their interest due in dollars, etc. to punishing heights while devaluing whatever they built with the dollars, etc. they borrowed. *Then there's a financial crisis of loan defaults and those who created and loaned out their global reserve currency demand the debtor nation sell all its assets and resources at bargain prices.* Being a member of the European Union didn't save Greece from this fate; no peripheral nation can protect itself from the predatory powers who can create currency at zero cost and send the value higher by restricting its issuance after other nations have loaded up on loans denominated in the reserve currency. *This is how "free" trade works in predatory globalization:* The only thing that's free is the cost of issuing trillions in global reserve currency. Everything else will cost you dearly. *Christopher* ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Musings <https://www.oftwominds.com/musings-sample.html> My Books <https://www.oftwominds.com/CHS-books.html> Archives <https://www.oftwominds.com/archives.html> Books/Films <https://www.oftwominds.com/books.html> * ------------------------------ *Our "Prosperity" Is Now Dependent on Predatory Globalization* <https://www.oftwominds.com/blogaug18/predatory-globalization8-18.html> *August 15, 2018* *Nowadays, trade and "prosperity" are dependent on currencies that are created out of thin air via borrowing or printing.
