---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tom Crowl <culturalengineer(a)gmail.com> Date: Sun, Jul 29, 2018 at 2:57 PM Subject: How Facebook is Undermining Democracy - Prof. Siva Vaidhyanathan To: Human tribalism is connected to human biology. Intellectual altruism alone cannot overcome our biological tribalism and its limits. It is bound by in group/out group demarcations and may well be a human necessity. (Do we NEED "out groups" to define ourselves?) I call this the "Altruism Dilemma" ... a problem that can be addressed.. but not eliminated. Techno optimism (the idea that either universal 'connection' or universal 'abundance' will result in universal wisdom or peace) is false. The altruism dilemma must be recognized and addressed. >From C-Span Book TV: *How Facebook is Undermining Democracy - Prof. Siva Vaidhyanathan* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3WDsjOmEXg <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3WDsjOmEXg> Not from C-Span TV: *Issues in Scaling Civilization: The Altruism Dilemma* http://culturalengineer.blogspot.com/2012/02/issues-in-scaling-civilization- altruism.html *Tom Crowl* http://CulturalEngineer.blogspot.com -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

has anyone read the book mentioned below, comments welcome " the cutting edge research and embodied awakened consciousness that are synthesized in his bestselling book A New Republic of the Heart: An Ethos for Revolutionaries which has been called "required reading for all humans over the age of 16", and "THE manual for all who want to meet this moment as the historic call to action that it is." ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jonathan Gustin <jonathangustin(a)hotmail.com> Date: Mon, Jul 30, 2018 at 4:57 AM Subject: What's really happening in this crazy world & how you can be the change you want to see To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Hello - All over the world, people are feeling overwhelmed. The daily news is arresting, disturbing and crazy-making. At times, it seems like human civilization - and the Earth's ecological systems - are coming unraveled. But there's a way through this darkness to the hope "on the other side". And YOU have a unique role to play in getting us there. You're invited to gather in virtual community for a free live video event with Terry Patten, one of the foremost thinkers and teachers of Integral philosophy, spirituality and leadership, where he'll share what he considers to be the most important message of his life: *What's Really Happening in this Crazy World and* *How You Can Be the Change You Want to See* Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 12pm noon Pacific Register here <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=00177YvuEPMLKldbGau77gaULv-k6SPD2QA37U9o7BWTgD6…> Terry is a good friend. He is dedicated to serving the future of life on Earth at a time when we can't take anything for granted. During his 60 minute event, Terry will share the truth about what's happening on Planet Earth and how it can actually call forth the very best of who we are-individually and as a species. He'll introduce you to the cutting edge research and embodied awakened consciousness that are synthesized in his bestselling book A New Republic of the Heart: An Ethos for Revolutionaries which has been called "required reading for all humans over the age of 16", and "THE manual for all who want to meet this moment as the historic call to action that it is." I just finished Terry's book this very evening and I cannot recommend this wise, informative and erudite book strongly enough. The writing is crisp, clean, poetic and thoughtful. Terry is obviously brilliant, but what really impresses me is his courage and heart, which is baked into every page. My copy is now full of underlines where I intend to go back and reread many sections. Terry will be touching on all of the book's major themes including: - The nature of our "super wicked" problems and why we tend to stick our heads in the sand - How ordinary folks like you and me are precisely the heroes that are called for in this challenging time - Why it's a moral imperative that we stay positively oriented and grounded in trust and gratitude - How your deep inner work is crucial for catalyzing the whole-system change our world needs - The power of "yin leadership", the feminine dimensions of the maturity and courage it will take for us to meet our planetary crisis - How the evolutionary pressures of our unprecedented times can strengthen your capacities and deepen your relationships - What Terry means when he says "things are far too serious for us to lose our sense of humor" If you feel the call to "be the change" and want to shape the future of our planetary life-support system, then register for the Aug. 1 event here <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=00177YvuEPMLKldbGau77gaULv-k6SPD2QA37U9o7BWTgD6…> . Everyone who registers for Terry's video event will receive a prerelease audio file of him narrating Chapter 1 of A New Republic of the Heart. Toward the end of the gathering, Terry will share an opportunity to participate in a 12-week guided study of A New Republic of the Heart: An Ethos for Revolutionaries. Warmly, Jonathan Gustin PS: A downloadable video recording will be provided later to all who register, whether or not you attended the live event. dear all, I really very very strongly recommend reading the whole essay here, it is clearly written and just 12 pages long, which introduces the differential impact of the blockchain for a future technological commonwealth, see in particular the five contending scenarios for the future, Future of Sovereignty in a Blockchain World <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_Blockchain_World#…> <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_Blockchain_World#…> ** Article: No Gods, No Masters, No Coders? This is because a technology is itself a structured set of relations that enables or con-strains different sets of possibilities. Thus, while it may be true that the process of uncovering a technology’s material components becomes increasingly chal-lenging as one moves to the digital realm (Leonardi et al. 2013), so too does it becomes easier to discover the intentionality behind digital materiality: the intended tendencies of blockchain technology are directly available in block-chain code." ( https://www.academia.edu/36871389/No_Gods_No_Masters_No_Coders_The_Future_o… ) Abstract[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_B…> ] "The building of the blockchain is predicted to harken the end of the con-temporary sovereign order. Some go further to claim that as a powerful decentering technology, blockchain contests the continued functioning of world capitalism. Are such claims merited? In this paper we consider sovereignty and blockchain technology theoretically, posing possible futures for sovereignty in a blockchain world. These possibilities include various forms of individual, popular, technological, corporate, and techno-totalitarian state sovereignty. We identify seven structural tendencies of blockchain technology and give examples as to how these have manifested in the construction of new forms of sovereignty. We conclude that the future of sovereignty in a blockchain world will be articulated in the conjuncture of social struggle and technological agency and we call for a stronger alliance between technologists and democrats." ( https://www.academia.edu/36871389/No_Gods_No_Masters_No_Coders_The_Future_o… ) Excerpts[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_B…> ]Claims regarding how the Blockchain <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Blockchain> will affect Sovereignty <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Sovereignty>[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_B…> ] Sarah and Ben Manski: "claims regarding the changing structure of sovereignty tend to clus-ter around three functional qualities of blockchain: first, its use as a ledger of transactions of digital assets; second, its wide distribution among stakeholders/ maintainers; third, its encryption of the transactions stored in ‘blocks’ of data linked together chronologically in a chain. Altogether, these function to facilitate new forms of trustless exchange, speed information sharing and connectivity, and disintermediate service provision by central entities. As a powerful decentering technology, it is argued, blockchain contests the dominant institutions of world capitalism. Are such claims merited? It is true that blockchain technology is still in its infancy and that there are significant hurdles to widespread commercial adoption. Pointing to cryptocurrencies’ early problems, it has lately become fashionable among the punditry to declare the entirety of blockchain a hoax (Gerard 2017). Yet we cannot help but note the prevalence of articles that at once predict block-chain to have no major effects while at the same time castigating the technol-ogy for undermining the power of regulatory authorities, financial institutions, juridical bodies—take your pick (e.g. Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase; see Gandel 2015). We believe the claims of blockchain technologists to be worthy of critical attention because they represent intelligent consideration, resource investment, and strategic action toward particular ends; they are literally coding the world they wish to see. The cognitive praxis of agents engaged in social change activi-ties can be a particularly useful source of empirical data (Manski 2018). While we do not here provide a thorough evaluation of claims, we do use them as sign-posts pointing the way forward from in-process projects toward possible futures." ( https://www.academia.edu/36871389/No_Gods_No_Masters_No_Coders_The_Future_o… ) Seven tendencies of blockchain technology and the structural qualities that produce them[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_B…> ] Sarah and Ben Manski: - *Verifiability* Transactions are assured through encrypted network consensus mechanisms in such a form that all transactions from the very first to the most recent are recorded in a ledger open to its maintainers, reducing information asymmetries2. - *Globality* Digital transactions and cultural information flows transcend geographic space and national borders3. - *Liquidity* Value liquidity is enhanced as the location of a store of value that does not depend or is not under the direct control of a sovereign, central bank or private corporation4. - *Permanence* The ledger of transaction is immutable by design5. - Ethereality Transactions are conducted in a digital medium6. - Decentralization The ledger is widely distributed among many stakeholders and maintainers. - *Future Focus* Found in newer developments of blockchain such as Ethereum, a stored autonomous self-reinforcing agency (SASRA) is formed in the temporal displacement of action through the use of smart contracts enabling the prefigurative recording of future transactions." ( https://www.academia.edu/36871389/No_Gods_No_Masters_No_Coders_The_Future_o… ) Five Possible Blockchain Futures <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Five_Possible_Blockchain_Futures>[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_B…> ] Sarah and Ben Manski: Individual Sovereignty[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_B…> ] "The technical politics of the Bitcoin blockchain are often described as libertarian in part because the design choices of this first blockchain emphasize the technology’s tendencies toward liquidity and decentralization. The builders of blockchain technology emerged from the self-identified cypherpunk movement of cryptologists and coders; Satoshi Nakamoto was a member. As Nakamoto wrote in an email to early collaborator Hal Finney, ‘It’s very attractive to the libertarian viewpoint if we can explain it properly’ (Nakamoto 2008b). Back when Satoshi had first launched the software, his writings were drily focused on the technical specifications of the programming. But after the first few weeks, Satoshi began emphasizing the broader ideological motivations for the software to help win over a broader audience. (Popper 2015 p. 30) Those economic libertarians who identify as ‘Ancap’ (or ‘anarcho-capitalist’) claim society best facilitates individual will in a free-market economy free from regulation by states or large corporations. The discourse of Bitcoin enthusiasts is revealing: the use of the term ‘mining’ to describe blockchain maintenance and ‘coin’ to describe a chain of digital signatures speaks to their fondness for gold. At the same time, libertarians generally share a faith in progressive technological determinism, believing that society can be improved and that social relationships and institutions can function more effectively through the use of new technological tools. Blockchain forms, such as Bitcoin, institutionalize this ideal by enabling a form of trustless direct exchange among individual property owners. Applications such as uPort ID seek to wrest control of personal data from major corporations and governments, as well as to provide privacy protections to individuals (ConsenSys 2015). Evidence is widespread and multiplying of efforts by technologists to use blockchain technology to challenge existing hierarchical institutional forms with peer-to-peer networks. It seems questionable, however, whether large numbers of people — as citizens, consumers, producers, etc. — will embrace a total shift from regulatory oversight toward a disaggregated society of autonomous individuals picking and choosing between peer-to-peer legal codes of arbitration and enforcement of agreements." Popular Sovereignty[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_B…> ] After more than two centuries of building a world beyond capitalist logics, the coop-erative movement is well positioned to make the most of blockchain’s tendencies toward globality, liquidity, permanence, decentralization and future focus. Through these, blockchain is beginning to convert the long standing vision of a popular ‘cooperative commonwealth’ into the actual construction of a ‘global technological commonwealth’ enacted through the use of advanced exchange, communication, and governance technologies (Manski 2017). There are many current examples of applications that make the global decentralized exercise of a popular sovereignty possible. Blockchain for Change has developed Fummi, an application that uses blockchain’s immutability and globality to store digital identities for those lacking permanent homes (Schiller 2017). Applications that make use of blockchain’s tendency toward future focus (Aitken 2017)—via the utility of stored autonomous self-reinforcing agency (SASRA) to handle contract administration and management — can be found in the development of AgriLedger for agricultural cooperatives (Hammerich 2018) and of the Pylon Network for energy cooperatives (Klenergy 2017). Decentralized commons-based currencies such as Duniter and Faircoin (Bauwens 2018) are now in use; these have been coded to reduce inequality via pro-vision of a Universal Dividend (also known as Basic Income) and other features. And emerging on the horizon are a series of next generation technology platforms designed to bypass bottlenecks and inequalities contained within current block-chain architectures; the most notable of these is Holochain (Brock and Harris-Braun 2017).We think blockchain is a powerful tool for the cooperative movement in its quest for economic democracy because many of blockchain’s tendencies toward globality, permanence, decentralization and future focus move parallel to ongoing cooperative projects. Additionally, we see in the distributed and secure structure of block-chain a limited safeguard against suppression should capitalist states move against blockchain-based pro-democracy initiatives. Activist use of simple virtual private network (VPN) or Proxy systems to access blockchain applications is much less vulnerable to state attack than has proven the case for many centralized and ‘above ground’ social movement organizations. To the extent that the construction of a global technological commonwealth faces obstacles, these lie not in the tendencies of blockchain technology but instead in the somewhat insular path dependencies of the cooperative movement itself. We are uncertain as to whether democratizers will prove capable of creating a culture sufficiently open, user-friendly, expansionist, and politically ambitious to maximize the possibilities offered by blockchain. Technological Sovereignty[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_B…> ] Technocracies are characterized by powerful actors and institutions able to maintain unequal positions of power through their use and control of technical knowledge. In tending toward ethereality, blockchains favour those with superior technological knowledge and positionality. Blockchain coders enjoy a comparative advantage over lay users because in calibrating blockchain over multiple prototype iterations, coders establish a lasting frame of reference through which they imagine alternatives and make design choices. This agency can be used toward different ends—as a means of resistance to capitalism, or as a means to personal profit, or as path to power consolidation. Notably, the early days of blockchain coding have seen an organizational com-mitment to open source. Open source code is co-created in a cooperative manner and appears to be dominating the core development of blockchain. This may be true because blockchain coding is more demanding than other types of programming and because group participation in creating blockchain-based applications is inherently more purposive than individual participation in development. As blockchain applications become more lucrative, however, we are wit-nessing a growing cast of corporate in-house blockchain developers and blockchain developer billionaires. At least one tendency of blockchain technology — future focus — may be leading toward a sovereignty not of technologists but of the technology itself. The development of SASRA could enable the creation of blockchain businesses that run themselves with distributed and decentralized profits, management, and services. These independent DAOs (decentralized autonomous organizations), would automatically leverage manifold smart contracts, thereby eliminating the lawyers, accountants and bureaucrats whose job it is to confirm the trustworthiness and legal standing of contracts between parties (Dew 2015). One example is Colony (Rea et al. 2018), which is testing a decentralized platform for work collaboration. Overall — whether in the technology or the technologists, or in service of democracy, capital, or self — we see little question but that blockchain technology tends in every way toward some form of technological sovereignty. Corporate Sovereignty[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_B…> ] With their abilities to mobilize unmatched financial resources, major corporations are exploiting blockchain’s tendencies toward verifiability, globality, liquidity, permanence, and future focus to forcibly adapt the technology to their own purposes. For example, Kodak, Amazon, Facebook and other corporations have identified the potential benefits of creating their own platform cryptocurrencies. Blockchain cryptocurrencies can include smart contracts that automatically dole out the company’s currency as a reward for developers who build apps on its platform or users who engage in desired behaviour. This kind of corporate ‘token economy’ has the flavour of a traditional company town; in this case the owner of the online space is the sovereign. And corporations are extraordinarily bad sover-eigns (Lessig 2006). Indeed, already functioning corporate sovereignties such as Google claim and expand their exclusive sovereign territory by absorbing existing spaces (Bratton 2016 p. 144). The introduction of blockchain’s powers of verifiability and perma-nence could further the degree of data granularity captured and monetized by these corporate platforms. All of this has the immediate effect of strengthening hierar-chies, centralizing power, exacerbating inequality, and generally weakening democ-racy. Furthermore, as some of the most advantaged players in the world system, corporations enjoy a significant head start in the race to program their logics into mainstream blockchain applications, as well as the capacity to enact state policies that block new applications threatening future disintermediation. Where the environ-mental economics literature describes ‘technology forcing’ as technological devel-opment driven by regulatory pressure, we see a similar process underway in the cor-poratization of blockchain toward the ends of corporate sovereignty. Techno-totalitarian State Sovereignty[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_B…> ] Many have claimed that blockchain technology will inevitably weaken the nation state, and in the final analysis, it may. Yet at the moment, national and transnational state institutions are actively working to support and regulate favoured types of block-chain activity and otherwise, where blockchain applications are disfavoured, ‘to regu-late it out of existence’ (Nicolaci da Costa 2018). They are going about this by crimi-nally investigating initial coin offering (or ‘ICOs’) (De 2018), demanding currency exchanges turn over user information (Paul 2018), enacting capital gains taxes on cryp-tocurrency trades (Bernard 2018), criminalizing non-state cryptocurrencies (Iyer and Anand 2018), and more. At the same time, major powers such as China, Russia, Japan, and the United States, as well as regional technology leaders like Uruguay, Estonia, Slovenia, and Kenya—as well as subsidiary states—are all jockeying for comparative strategic advantage in the development and deployment of new blockchain technolo-gies (Tapscott and Tapscott 2016).Such interventions signal the possibilities for states to expand their reach. In block-chain’s tendencies toward verifiability, globality, permanence, and future focus, state actors are finding greater capacities to intervene globally in the daily lives of individu-als. These expanded capacities are making possible the emergence of new technologi-cal totalitarian forms of state sovereignty. To begin with, states cannot easily control what they cannot measure, and a blockchain-enabled Internet of Things (IoT) amplified by artificial intelligence furthers the degree with which states can monitor the material and social world. The rapidly expanding IoT is expected to more than triple in size by 2020 to nearly 21 billion devices (Stravridis and Weinstein 2016). When there is a tiny blockchain-connected chip embedded in each material object with which we interact, state institutions will assuredly seek to monitor and discipline the personal, political, and economic activities of the many. This prediction should not be controversial. Political parties in power regularly use targeted voter suppression technologies to gain partisan political advantage (Palast 2000; Norris 2014; Simon 2016). Police forces use technology to engage in ‘predictive policing’ that disproportionately targets communities of colour (Jouvenal 2016; Winston 2018). State welfare agencies use technology to track and restrict how food assistance money is spent or pension fraud or error (Templeton 2016; UK Govern-ment Chief Scientific Adviser 2016). The Chinese state is moving to a whole new level of state control with the creation of a national reputation system ranking individuals based on their economic and social status (Chinese State Council 2014). Altogether, recent history gives us reason to expect that state interventions into the development of blockchain technology are more likely to lead in a totalitarian rather than democratizing direction." ( https://www.academia.edu/36871389/No_Gods_No_Masters_No_Coders_The_Future_o… ) Discussion[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Future_of_Sovereignty_in_a_B…> ] >From the conclusion, by Sarah and Ben Manski: "Earlier we stated that as a still young technology, blockchain offers interpretive flexibility. Yet as proposals become institutions, interpretation comes under the influence of structural forces. Structures possess within them powers that lean in some directions and not others. The structures of blockchain technology, we have found, tend more toward more distributed, democratized, and technologized sov-ereignties. Yet many of these same tendencies can be—and are being—channelled and recast both by corporate capital and states; actors that are well prepared and highly incentivized to take advantage. Corporations in particular have both a tem-poral advantage as early movers as well as the resources to hire technologists and rent state officials in attempts to both code and regulate the blockchain world of the near future. Against such advantages, we see little likelihood of effective dis-aggregated resistance by libertarian proponents of individual sovereignty.Popular sovereignty, on the other hand, may have a future. Cooperatives and democracy activists may find themselves capable of overcoming their early struc-tural disadvantages by building a coalition of technologies and broader publics. As we have repeatedly pointed out, much of the motivating ideology and daily practice of blockchain coders is idealistic, utopian, decentralist, and cooperative. Furthermore, many blockchain technologists became wealthy through early investments in cryptocurrencies and are thus free of the dictates of wage slavery. As the proximate constitutionalizers of the new blockchain world, technologists are in a potentially determinative position and their affinities matter. Add in the strong desire for the kind of world society that cooperatives are programming into their blockchain applications that was articulated in the global democracy wave of 2008-2014, and we see that a rising of global popular sovereignty may not be so improbable after all." -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

We are already getting a glimpse of what is to come through China’s various initiatives, ranging from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to the Belt and Road project and the 16+1 group, which is developing Chinese-financed projects in Eastern Europe and the Balkans. China is also seeking to connect a global electricity grid <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…> powered by wind and solar as a means to sustain development while fighting climate change. This new order will not be like the old. At least for now, it is not multilateral but comprised of multiple bilateral relationships linked to the Chinese core. And given China’s “one world, many systems” perspective, it is based not on a convergence of values, but of interests. President Xi Jinping has cast these initiatives with a positive spin as building “a community of shared future for mankind.” The most cynical critics regard them as a thin fig leaf disguising China’s quest for global dominance and merely a means to find markets for overproduction as its domestic economy slows. Xi’s vision is also clouded by manifold reports of debt overload and kickbacks for corrupt leaders. In Sri Lanka, China has taken over a port it built because Sri Lanka couldn’t afford the debt. The same dynamic seems to be developing in Pakistan <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…> and Laos; the new Malaysian government, meanwhile, has put its Chinese-financed rail project on hold, citing corruption and disadvantageous terms negotiated by the previous regime. There is no mileage in being naive about China’s ambitions and its self-interested motives. But lining up with hostility against China’s initiatives the way Joseph Stalin and his minions did toward the Marshall Plan after World War II — which did wonders for a devastated Europe while also benefiting the United States through purchases of imports from American companies that were required to cross the Atlantic on American merchant ships — is a mistaken course for the West. And let’s not forget that the American expansion of railroads <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…> westward in the 19th century also led to a crisis of corruption and over-indebtedness. Despite the turmoil and losses, when it was all sorted out, the result in the end was a connected continent that became a foundation of American prosperity. Twenty years from now, the same will likely be true of Eurasia and Africa as a result of China’s initiatives, even with all of their faults. That is why, to diminish the downsides, the proper stance would be for the West to join with China’s efforts at global development so that the process is more transparent and less corrupt, with terms that don’t foster debt traps and amount to creditor imperialism. The experience of the “clean, lean and green” AIIB, which many Western nations — though not the United States — have joined, shows that high standards can be imposed if the West is a participant instead of an outsider as the new order is being built. After all, it is not as if Western nations on their own are going to finance and construct infrastructure around the world. No one needs reminding that the United States has been unable to build a single high-speed rail project anywhere on its vast territory. By and large, it can’t even manage to finance the repair of old infrastructure, much less invest in anything new. The European Union remains mired in deep disagreements about how to manage its own internal finances. While critics carp from the sidelines, those in need of help are grateful. “When we were faced with financial crisis, amidst the wider challenges of the E.U., China helped us,” Greece’s former prime minister George Papandreou recalled in a recent conversation with me. “China was one of the few nations to buy our sovereign bonds. This was an important vote of confidence. Then China began its investment in the Port of Piraeus, an early investment that is now one of the major components of the new maritime Silk Road. These investments showed great trust in my country’s capacity to overcome the crisis, where few others would.” In The WorldPost this week, we address these issues of a growing vacuum in the world order and China’s attempt to fill it, for good and for ill. Ali Wyne <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…> sees the demise of the American-led postwar order as less a consequence of President Trump’s wrecking ball and more a victim of its own success. That order, built to avoid another devastating world war among major powers, achieved its goal. Along with an open trading regime, it was this stable absence of global conflict that enabled China’s peaceful rise. The result of success, Wyne contends, has been a complacency that has eroded the founding urgency that sustained a broad and deep commitment of states and their publics. That makes revitalizing the order a challenge. “The modernization of the world order would ideally result from farsighted diplomacy,” writes Wyne. “It is more likely, though, that policymakers will do little more than push for incremental improvements to an inadequate system” thereby allowing “forces — ranging from external challenges to populist uprisings — to continue testing its foundations. The potential result of indefinite erosion — a vacuum in order, without a coherent alternative to replace it — is unpalatable.” Noting that the creation of new orders has historically followed upon cataclysmic events like the world wars, Wyne concludes: “In a nuclear age, though, it is terrifying to consider what might have to occur for a new order to emerge.” To the extent that China is fostering an alternative to the vacuum, Jonathan Hillman <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…> doesn’t like what he sees. “The Belt and Road is a masterstroke in geopolitical advertising. Wrapping the effort in Silk Road mythology, Xi is effectively selling a Sino-centric order to the world,” he writes from Budapest. “In practice, the Belt and Road is a sea of bilateral deals between China and participating countries, including many markets where few others dare to go. More than half <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…> of the countries participating in the Belt and Road have sovereign debt ratings that are either junk or not graded. China’s emphasis on building big-ticket infrastructure projects resonates with foreign leaders looking to impress at home and establish a legacy.” For Hillman, this mix of a debt trap with the megalomania of corrupt local autocrats will not spell stability and progress but a costly waste of resources as nations become tributaries beholden to Chinese largesse. As China extends its influence globally, it will inexorably be drawn into local conflicts, just as the United States was in its period of dominance. “For decades, Beijing refrained from meddling with sovereign nations’ internal affairs,” Denise Hruby <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…> writes from Juba, South Sudan, where the China National Petroleum Company owns a 40 percent share of the country’s largest oil fields. “As long as economic ties flourished, it would turn a blind eye toward human rights abuses and corruption. But with increasing investments abroad comes more clout, and as the United States scales back its international commitments, China is emerging as an obvious development partner.” Hruby reports that while China initially sought a direct role in ending the South Sudan conflict, which threatens its investments, it was soon overwhelmed by the complexity of militia and tribal politics. China fields its largest contingent of U.N. peacekeeping forces there, but it has reverted to a stance that “African problems must have African solutions” and looks to the African Union and other local mediators to resolve the crisis while it stands on the sidelines. Jeffrey Sachs <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…> sees Trump’s effort to staunch China’s newfound influence while abandoning America’s own successful model of development as achieving the opposite of its intent. “American prosperity since World War II has been built upon science and technology breakthroughs spurred by a powerful innovation system linking the federal government, business, academia and venture capital,” he writes. “U.S. innovation policy has been successfully emulated in Europe and Asia, most recently by China. President Trump’s trade war against China aims to slow China’s technology ascent but is misguided and doomed to fail; instead, American prosperity should be assured by doing what America does best: innovating at home and trading with the rest of the world.” Nathan Gardels <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…>, Editor in Chief Kathleen Miles <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…>, Executive Editor Dawn Nakagawa <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…>, Vice President of Operations Peter Mellgard <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…>, Features Editor Alex Gardels <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…>, Video Editor Clarissa Pharr <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…>, Associate Editor Rosa O’Hara <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…>, Social Editor The WorldPost <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…>, a partnership of the Berggruen Institute <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001917-aFh9W34o9dcZLVw0Cv5cCta0WcCUqk9WreDZi42b…> and The Washington Post, is an award-winning global media platform that aims to be a place where the world meets. Fwd: [Open App Ecosystem] Cooperative Commons Clouds

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: wouter(a)freeknowledge.eu (Loomio) <notifications(a)loomio.org> Date: Fri, Jul 27, 2018 at 5:33 PM Subject: [Open App Ecosystem] Cooperative Commons Clouds To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com [image: wouter(a)freeknowledge.eu] *wouter(a)freeknowledge.eu <wouter(a)freeknowledge.eu>* invited you to join: Cooperative Commons Clouds <https://www.loomio.org/invitations/QrVeiAXcovLCVbxTY5dMAmbE?utm_campaign=di…> These days we met with a good bunch of people at the Open.Coop 2018 and discussed CommonsCloud <https://commonscloud.coop?utm_campaign=discussion_announced&utm_medium=emai…> and other cooperative commons-oriented cloud platforms, like the happy-devs.fr team, Sophie from commons platform, Chris from WebArchitects and coops.tech. Today we had a breakfast, a panel discussion and later an open space breakout where we continued the discussion. We agreed that we should: * work on mutually recognising accounts, so people with accounts on one node can logon with their account to other nodes. There is at least two layers to that: ** technically, bind LDAP accounts or recognise OpenID accounts or otherwise ** socially, put in place an Memorandum of Understanding with some minimum shared values (no exploitation of personal data, replicable tools…) between nodes of the federated network. This would also enable us to be stronger in communicating our networks. * shared efforts in the selection of open standards, xmpp, ActivityPub have been mentioned * shared efforts in the selection of tools (e.g. CommonsCloud.coop has started operations with Discourse, NextCloud, Phabricator plus LDAP directories, WebArchitects similar). * shared development (NextCloud requires lots of improvements especially in the collaborative editing, so far CollaboraOffice has proven the best editor integration, but with issues…) * sharing training materials * sharing experience with sustainability models, strategies, … * providing alternatives to github: WebArchitects offers their cooperative instance of the Free Software gitLab under git.coop; CommonsCloud is using Phabricator <https://projectes.commonscloud.coop/?utm_campaign=discussion_announced&utm_…> * apart from git, there are project management protocols that we should build into these platforms to make interoperability and migration a reality. How can Phabricator and other platforms incorporate those? Let’s use this thread to continue working on the concrete next steps of what we discussed. Looking forward to that! — Beantwoord deze e-mail onmiddelijk of bekijk het op Loomio <https://www.loomio.org/invitations/QrVeiAXcovLCVbxTY5dMAmbE?utm_campaign=di…>. In their billions, they create giant rivers of water in the air – rivers that form clouds and create rainfall hundreds or even thousands of miles away. But as we shave the planet of trees, we risk drying up these aerial rivers and the lands that depend on them for rain. A growing body of research suggests that this hitherto neglected impact of deforestation could in many continental interiors dwarf the impacts of global climate change. It could dry up the Nile, hobble the Asian monsoon, and desiccate fields from Argentina to the Midwestern United States. Until recently, the nuggets of data delivering such warnings were fragmented and often relegated to minor scientific journals. But the growing concerns came to the fore in reports presented at two forest forums held by the United Nations and the Norwegian government in recent weeks. In Norway, Michael Wolosin of the U.S. think tank Forest Climate Analytics and Nancy Harris of the World Resources Institute published a study <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> that concluded that “tropical forest loss is having a larger impact on the climate than has been commonly understood.” They warned that large-scale deforestation in any of the three major tropical forest zones of the world – Africa’s Congo basin, southeast Asia, and especially the Amazon – could disrupt the water cycle sufficiently to “pose a substantial risk to agriculture in key breadbaskets halfway round the world in parts of the U.S., India, and China.” *The water that a single tree transpires daily has a cooling effect equivalent to two domestic air conditioners for a day.* And in a background paper <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> for the UN event, David Ellison of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, reported on “increasingly sophisticated literature” assessing “the potential impact of forest cover on water availability across the broad expanse of continental, terrestrial surface.” It is well known that carbon dioxide emissions from deforestation add 10 percent or so to global warming by reducing the quantity of CO2 that the world’s forests pull from the atmosphere. But the authors of both papers say this understanding about global impacts of deforestation has tended to eclipse findings about other “non-carbon” climatic impacts that may play out intensively at local and regional scales. The impact of deforestation on rainfall is one of the most important non-carbon effects. But there are others. For instance, healthy forests release a range of volatile organic compounds that “have an overall cooling effect on our climate,” mostly by blocking incoming solar energy, says Dominick Spracklen of Leeds University in England. Removing forests eliminates this cooling effect and adds to warming, he and an international team concluded in a study <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> published earlier this year. Meanwhile, lost forests are usually replaced by agriculture, which produces its own emissions. Add in these impacts and the real contribution of deforestation to global climate warming since 1850 is as much as 40 percent, conclude Wolosin and Harris. At that rate, tropical deforestation could add 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7°Fahrenheit) to global temperatures <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> by 2100 – even if we shut down fossil fuel emissions tomorrow, calculates Natalie Mahowald of Cornell University. ------------------------------ <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> *On Indonesia's island of Sumatra, which has one of the worst deforestation rates in the world, temperatures in logged areas have increased an average 1.05 degrees Celsius since 2000. AULIA ERLANGGA / CIFOR <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>* ------------------------------ But there are local effects, too. Forests moderate local climate by keeping their local environments cool. They do this partly by shading the land, but also by releasing moisture from their leaves. This process, called transpiration, requires energy, which is extracted from the surrounding air, thus cooling it*.* A single tree can transpire hundreds of liters of water in a day. Each hundred liters has a cooling effect equivalent to two domestic air conditioners for a day, calculates Ellison <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> . Monitoring of rapidly deforesting regions of the tropics has recently shown the effect of losing this arboreal air conditioning. Take the Indonesian island of Sumatra, which has been losing forests to palm oil cultivation faster than almost anywhere else on the planet. A study last year found that since 2000, surface temperatures there have on average increased by 1.05 degrees Celsius (1.8°F), compared with 0.45 degrees in forested parts. Clifton Sabajo at the University of Gottingen, Germany, found temperature differences between forest and clear-cut land of up to 10 degrees Celsius (18°F) <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> in parts of Sumatra. Meanwhile in the Amazon, Michael Coe of the Woods Hole Research Center recently reported a difference of 3 degrees Celsius (5.4°F) <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> between the cool of the forested Xingu indigenous park and surrounding croplands and pastures. *“The forests cause the rainfall, and if they weren’t there the interior of these continental areas would be deserts,” says one expert.* But heat is only the start. There is drought, too — not just in and around former forest lands, but far away. And a host of new studies are forcing a reassessment of exactly why it rains where it does. We are used to thinking of rainfall as the end result of water evaporating from the oceans. In coastal regions that is overwhelmingly the case. But it turns out that the interiors of continents often get most of their precipitation from water that has been rained out and recycled back into the air several times in a precipitation cascade following the winds. The further inland, the more dominant this recycling becomes. Some of the recycling is straightforward evaporation from lakes, rivers, or wet soil. But much of it is fast-tracked by plants, and especially trees. Tree roots tap moisture from deep in the soil. This circulation system is driven by releases of moisture into the air through their leaves via transpiration. By one estimate, the planet’s land vegetation recycles 48 cubic miles of water each day. A tenth of that is released by <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> the Amazon rainforest alone – rather more than the daily discharge of the Amazon River. ------------------------------ *Trees pull water from the ground and release water vapor through their leaves, generating atmospheric rivers of moisture. - WORLD RESOURCES INSTITUTE <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>* ------------------------------ Transpiration is essential to generating new rainfall downwind. And the heart of this process is in the surviving tropical rainforests, where transpiration is most intense. “Traditionally, people have said areas like the Congo and the Amazon have high rainfall because they are located in parts of the world that experience high precipitation,” says Doug Sheil <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, near Oslo. “But the forests cause the rainfall, and if they weren’t there the interior of these continental areas would be deserts.” In a study <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> of tropical areas downwind of deforestation, Spracklen found that “air that has passed over extensive vegetation in the preceding few days produces at least twice as much rain as air that has passed over little vegetation.” He predicts that forest loss is set to reduce dry-season rainfall across the Amazon basin by 21 percent by 2050. Arie Staal of Wageningen University in the Netherlands reported earlier this year <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> that one-third of the rain falling in the Amazon basin comes from moisture generated within the basin, mostly by transpiring trees. The dependence was greatest downwind in the west of the basin, farther from the Atlantic Ocean. With a fifth of the Amazon forests gone, the risks of drought grow <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> for such regions. Coe reported less rainfall and a longer dry season <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> in Rondônia, an Amazon province on Brazil’s western border with Bolivia. *The Amazon provides moisture as far as the Midwestern U.S., which gets 50 percent of its rainfall from water evaporating from land.* Daniel Ruiz of Columbia University says rainfall in the Colombian Andes is becoming more seasonal, with reduced humidity and fewer clouds. <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> Some researchers believe the desiccation could stretch south to Argentina and north across the Caribbean to North America. The Amazon is thought to provide moisture as far as the Midwest, which gets 50 percent of its rainfall from water evaporating from the land. <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> Attributing changes in rainfall to altered land use is difficult. But a growing body of research asserts that the fingerprints of deforestation are increasingly visible. In Borneo, an analysis of nine watersheds <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> found that those with the greatest forest loss have seen a reduction in rainfall of around 15 percent. In India, Supantha Paul of the Indian Institute of Technology in Mumbai found that patterns of declining rainfall during the Indian monsoon matched changing forest cover. <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> Patrick Keys of the Stockholm Resilience Center in Sweden says the downwind effect of deforestation is not limited to the tropics. “China receives a very large fraction of its rainfall from water that is recycled from evaporation on land,” he told Yale Environment 360. It “has very high potential for changes to its precipitation driven by upwind land-use change” as far away as Eastern Europe and the jungles of Southeast Asia. This matters for farmers, but also for city dwellers. In a study of 29 megacities around the world, Keys found that 19 relied on evaporation and transpiration from land. He singled out as the most vulnerable Karachi in Pakistan and China’s Shanghai, Wuhan, and Chongqing. Other cities such as Delhi and Kolkata in India, Istanbul, and Moscow were not far behind. ------------------------------ *Forest mist in Pico da Neblina National Park, in the northern Brazilian state of Amazonas. PETER VAN DER SLEEN <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> / UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS* ------------------------------ In the Americas, he warned that the Brazilian megacities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo and Argentina’s Buenos Aires could also be vulnerable because much of their rainfall originates in the Mato Grosso region, where forests and grassland are rapidly being replaced by corn and soy fields. And what of Africa, the region of the world whose people are most dependent on rain-fed agriculture? In Africa, drought can mean death. But Keys estimates that up to 40 percent of sub-Saharan rainfall <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> is created by moisture that has been recycled by vegetation. In the arid Sahel region, the figure may rise to 90 percent <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>, says Louis Verchot of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR). Recent research has highlighted the threat posed by deforestation to the Nile River, the world’s longest river, and the 300 million people who depend on it. Most of the Nile’s flow begins in the Ethiopian highlands, a small rain-drenched part of the river’s catchment. But recent research suggests that much of the rainfall in the Ethiopian highlands comes courtesy of moisture recycled by the forests of West Africa and, especially, the jungles of the Congo basin in the continent’s heart. These rainforests “may provide as much as 30 to 40 percent of the total annual rainfall in the Ethiopian highlands,” says Ellison. Two questions arise. Has deforestation in West Africa been responsible for the reduced Nile flows <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> out of Ethiopia seen in the final quarter of the 20th century, as suggested by Ellison’s colleague <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>, Solomon Gebrehiwot, a researcher at Justus-Liebig University, Giessen in Germany. And could future loss of the Congo jungle empty the river further? Sheil says Gebrehiwot’s data suggest a further 25 percent decline in Nile flow is a realistic estimate. Both Keys and Ellison see an urgent need for climate scientists and diplomats alike to begin addressing these issues, so that pressure points can be identified and policies adopted to protect rainfall in critical places. We have treaties governing river flows in most rivers that cross international borders, they point out. But the rivers of moisture in the atmosphere are rarely measured and never governed. Egypt and Ethiopia have spent years working toward an agreement on managing water flows in the Nile. But a deal on sharing the water will be pointless if rains falter in the Ethiopian highlands because of deforestation in the distant Congo basin. In the current human-dominated era of the Anthropocene, says Keys, “processes such as moisture recycling… can, and ought, to be governed.” ------------------------------ Fred Pearce is a freelance author and journalist based in the U.K. He is a contributing writer for *Yale Environment 360* and is the author of numerous books, including "The Land Grabbers, Earth Then and Now: Potent Visual Evidence of Our Changing World," and "The Climate Files: The Battle for the Truth About Global Warming."* More >>> <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…>* Original Article Link <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> <https://twitter.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8…> *Copyright © 2018 Ryan Fortune, All rights reserved.* Because we have borrowed this world from our children... *Our mailing address is:* Ryan Fortune Rainbow Warriors International Observatory Cape Town, Western Cape 7945 South Africa Add us to your address book <//twitter.us2.list-manage.com/vcard?u=00451369d2404e52ccee430a8&id=d8ef396e58> Want to change how you receive these emails? ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Krzysztof Nawratek <k.nawratek(a)sheffield.ac.uk> Date: Fri, Jul 27, 2018 at 3:20 PM Subject: TOTAL URBAN MOBILISATION. Ernst Jünger and Post-capitalist City To: Krzysztof Nawratek <k.nawratek(a)sheffield.ac.uk> Dear Friends and Colleagues, I am sorry for cross-posting. My new book titled 'Total Urban Mobilisation. Ernst Junger and the Post-capitalist city' has been published (you will find each chapter preview via the link below): https://www.palgrave.com/us/book/9789811310928 I do hope you find it interesting (few endorsements and a short description of the book below). If you are interested in writing and publishing a review in an 'established' medium (academic journal or main-stream media) the Publisher will send you a copy, but if you would like to write a review on a blog or any other 'non-established' place please let me know, I can send you a digital copy. Best wishes, *Dr Krzysztof Nawratek FHEA* <https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/architecture/people/academic/krzysztof-nawratek> *Senior Lecturer in Humanities and Architectural Design* *The University of Sheffield, SSoA* *publications: https://sheffield.academia.edu/KrzysztofNawratek <https://sheffield.academia.edu/KrzysztofNawratek> * *‘Krzysztof Nawratek's book is a thoughtful and provocative piece of work, which is much needed at present. It offers an alternative approach to the current debate on post-capitalism in both critical and urban studies, a messianic one drawing on a number of authors and suggesting what a post-capitalist city could be. A must read for those interested in the future of cities.’* *Camillo Boano*, Professor of Urban Design and Critical Theory, University College London, UK. *‘Krzysztof Nawratek’s excellent study focuses on the richest implications of the city. His vision of the humanized post-capitalism city and its fully efficient agency as a consequence of the “total mobilization” is most impressive.’* *Tingyang Zhao*, Professor of Philosophy at Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China. *‘This book is one of the most interesting I have read on the topic of how the city can be effectively re-claimed as a contemporary inclusive urb. It brings together knowledge, reflection and hope. It is a real page-turner: well written and clever, a book to arm oneself with in the total mobilization for the inclusive post-capitalist city.’* *Professor Monika Kostera*, the Jagiellonian University, Poland, and Linnaeus University, Sweden *‘This book is a thoughtful critique of the contemporary urban condition, and a search for an alternative, post-capitalist urban vision.’* *Professor Ali Madanipour*, Director of the Global Urban Research Unit (GURU) at Newcastle University, UK *In this book Krzysztof Nawratek explores the possibility of a post-capitalist city, and in so doing, reclaims and develops the idea of total mobilisation as originally formulated by Ernst Jünger. Nawratek formulates the idea of ‘accumulation of agency’ the ability to act, to replace the logic of capital accumulation as a main driver of urban development. He argues that this ‘accumulation of agency’ operates already in contemporary cities, and should not be seen as essential element of capitalism, but as a conceptual gateway to a post-capitalist world.* *.* -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens
