Thanks for the clarification Bob. I some how have growing feeling that the stage 2 is coming closer, hope you/we could make it soon. ps. after the recent discussions on the currency issue, also external discussions i entered outside on the role of the repetitional systems, I suddenly started to think about possible use of the open value network, or more specifically NRP, also as an open reputation building system, in or through which the function of money can be embedded in the tool. Like using the labour value added in the production which is being traced via the tool you have been developing, directly as a trust based money to facilitate the exchanges within the network. Would this make sense to you and others, like if it is linked to fair.coin or fiat currencies with an interface like structure? orsan > On 16 feb. 2015, at 14:07, Bob Haugen <bob.haugen(a)gmail.com> wrote: > > I just wanted to clarify that our goals (Mikorizal) are: > 1) first, to figure out the form and behavior (model and logic) for an > open value network operating system, which is not yet finished, and > 2 then (in parallel), collaborate with other people to standardize the > model in the format of Linked Open Data and break the model and logic > into smaller components developed by different people. > Yes a good review by Kevin Carson in the USA. Some additional info that could be helpful to some……..thinking about the practicalities of the Great Transition to a commons based new economy. Thanks a lot Pat, that is very helpful indeed. > Mike Lewis and I did a range of short fully illustrated articles to serialise parts of our book, The Resilience Imperative. I attach a few of these to give a flavour to folks on these lists about a number of co-operative economic democracy solutions. Crucial to all is what Polanyi argued, namely the need to reverse enclosure by taking people, earth and money out of the market as these are false commodities. the idea of translating Polanyi's vision and understanding double movement really important for the win, I believe. In the sense of, hacking the material needs becoming dividing lines between individuals, governed classes, and societies, and exploited by the ruling classes. It will sound stupid or naive, but in a was while allowing a mesh networked solidarity at the grassroots. Like house owning pauperized and disspossed low waged workers can support each other both in action and policy wise, at the bottom; groups who might needs higher basic income and lower taxes for instance can get support from home owners losing their homes like in Spain and in return actions like Pah's can be linked to actions for BI. The visual material you sent gives insights for designing actions in this direction. > As Kevin points out we do in the book a calculation of what would be the impact on an average household with a couple of kids in North America if a Community Land Trust home, a JAK interest free mortgage fee based mortgage, green energy solutions and local food sourcing were all provided. Here is the calculation over 25 years on a slide further below. You see this is the size of a good pension pot. and this is obviously some thing can be linked to green and ecologic justice movements. Could you imagine how all these be integrated with a monetary system Varoufakis was imagining in Michels' last email? thinking and working on these ideas openly this way we may be helpful for both John, in sketching a semi-wiki-action plan, and then these exchanges can become itself part of 'rapid solidarity force' for the emancipation, if we say by not using militaristic terms. best, Orsan > <CCCR - i42011NOV11_CLTs and Affordability.pdf> > <CCCR - i42012MAR05_Kristianstad.pdf> > <CCCR - JAK Bank article.pdf> > <CCCR - i42011DEC15_MHOS.pdf> > <CCCR - i42011NOV30_CLB.pdf> > > <RI - Hardwicks Pg329.pdf> > > > >> On 17 Feb 2015, at 11:09, Örsan Şenalp <orsan1234(a)gmail.com> wrote: >> >> Guessing I.M. is someone in the Greek delegation from Syriza government? The conference aims at developing the scholarly and public debate about current data-driven power dynamics and possible democratic alternatives. You can book your (free) ticket via Eventbrite http://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/politics-of-big-data-tickets-15741681794 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- POLITICS OF BIG DATA CONFERENCE - King's College London - MAY 8TH 2015 "Big Data” is a contested term describing the increasing pervasiveness of data generation, gathering and mining in our society. The unprecedented market success Facebook, Google, and related digital, media, and marketing corporations is predicated on Big Data. Furthermore, as demonstrated by the Snowden revelations on the NSA and GCHQ, Big Data also provides new means for mass surveillance. Yet, this is not the whole story. Data is a site of political struggle. Beyond its value to state and capital, Big Data affords myriad opportunities for new forms of creative and political engagement. Open data initiatives, information leaks, and data-driven cultural projects are but early steps toward more democratic uses of the data we generate in our everyday lives. This conference will explore the contested and multifaceted nature of the politics of Big Data, covering both critiques of existing data-driven power dynamics as well as possible alternatives. With a growing variety of different types of work contract, knowledge workers constitute a type of professional work that is increasingly exposed to the logic of the market and are increasingly required to auto-activate their own resources, empathy and individual autonomy (Gorz, 2003; Morini, Fumagalli, 2010). The ambivalences embedded in these forms of production – in which new forms of exploitation and control and new sense constructions coexist at the same time (Rullani, 2004; Bologna, 2011) – show the double face of contemporary capitalism, which urges subjects to put their own lives into production but also leaves room for passion and creative capacities (Boltansky, Chiappello, 1999; Marazzi, 2010; Karppi et al., 2014). Following this perspective, global capitalism can continue to accumulate but can also overflow, spreading pervasivelyr through different (technological) devices, while simultaneously opening up a multitude of times and spaces (Thrift, 2005) in which subjects struggle to find their position. In knowledge based industries, work is circumscribed by the cognitive frames of creativity the imagery of subjects, but simultaenously demands adaptability, in a context in which deregulation and individualisation are now normal. The ethics of self-activation are therefore inextricably intertwined with the demands of intensification, neostandardisation and self-commodification. In this framework, the organisation of knowledge work is increasingly subordinated to the disciplines imposed by global production chains (Berger, 2008; Huws, 2014) leading not only to the intension of work and the transformation of the capabilities required of workers, but also to the creation of new forms of affective labour (Hochschild, 1983; Hardt, 1999; Hesmondhalgh, Baker, 2008) which blur the boundaries of work (Gill, Pratt, 2008; McRobbie, 2011). The aim of this Special Issue is to develop a critical discussion on knowledge workers' conditions and subjectivities in the new global division of labour. We welcome paper submissions from diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives on the following themes: - representations and experiences of knowledge workers in the global tertiarised societies; - mechanisms of subjectivation and strategies to seek to avoid and to resist them; - risks of precariousness and proletarisation that might derive from a professionalisation driven by global and glocal markets; - knowledge workers' collective practices, with particular attention to new forms of collaboration, sociality and social features of welfare and their limitations and potentialities. Fwd: Rewritten, for Clarity
by Michel Bauwens 17 Feb '15

17 Feb '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Kanth, Rajani <rkanth(a)fas.harvard.edu> Date: Tue, Feb 17, 2015 at 10:08 PM Subject: Rewritten, for Clarity To: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> The Campus of the Living Arts: Birth of a Notion* There is a felt-need , today, globally, to bypass formal structures based on competition and private gain in favor of institutions vested with structures/processes that are life-enhancing, based on mutuality, and co-operation, and a true regard for the public weal. I would think very few educated have any doubts left , after the financial debacle of 2008, as to what untrammeled acquisitiveness can do to an economy and society: especially its moral fibre. Now, the spirit of experimentation is as American as apple-pie: and Utah shares that within its unique heritage of Mormonism , which started out as a great experiment in communal living , imbued with a co-operative ethos. It is in that spirit of voluntary self-organisation (that Tocqueville found so heady about America) I am proposing to help institute an alternate , novel, Association titled a Campus of the Living Arts – part school, part trading post, part amphitheatre, part village - a corpus of people wishing to pursue autonomous, non-formalistic ways of living, learning, and working , inclusive of gaining and sharing diverse skills. After initially forming and charging various Committees to help plan the Project, there will be a Convention held , likely in Salt Lake City, where the specifics will be put to resolution in a Town-Hall style Meeting. The Campus will be a sort of a vast ‘Skills-Exchange’ facility, where Participants, short term and long term, engage one another, in a gamut of diverse activities. The idea is to develop ‘Tools of Conviviality’, the entire Campus being such a tool. It’s functioning will be non-formal and voluntaristic . Many of the engagements will be practical , and conducive to self-employment and self-development. All Participants will have a choice of donating something: their time, skills, and/or monies to the Project - as , and when, they choose. The Campus, eventually , will have residential annexes , sort of like a village. It will ‘evolve’ over time in ecologically and societally sound ways, through mutual deliberation. It will also aim at self-sufficiency, and may use its own labor-time based scrip. Initially , it will seek donations of materials: land, materials, funds, etc.: but, eventually, will try to finance itself. It will be self-governing in microcosms , rather than as a centralized entity. Effectively, all its norms will evolve, it is hoped, in the very making of it. The Campus will be a living, societal, participatory, civic, community-enterprise that will seek to model itself on the best norms available so as to be a template, universally. It will be an autonomous, partly residential , civic Campus , in a natural, semi-rural setting, in Utah, that will encourage interactive learning/gathering of civilisational and cultural skills, over a very large range, to improve the Quality of Life of All. It will aim at being a broad, interactive co-respective facility and a living , self-sustaining, civic, communal entity: economically viable, self-managing , and ecologically sustainable . The ambit of skills, specialties, and learning options might , provisionally, include: General Arts & Crafts (pottery, quilt-making, basket-weaving, organic farming, bee-keeping, et.al.), the Culinary Arts; Music , Film, and Theatre; Philosophy, Anthropology, Literature and Classics; Parenting and Familial modes, Architecture and Theology; Ecology, Sustainability and Human Well-Being; Ideas and Ideology; Culture, Community, and Civilisational Studies; Healing and Therapeutic Studies, and perhaps even some Select Natural Sciences. Now that we have , perforce, ‘globalised’ the world, it might well be time, with Projects such as just delineated, to ‘re-localise’ it, a bit closer to the simpler needs and drives of ordinary humanity. *For more information, pl. write to: livingartscampus(a)gmail.com -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://en.wiki.floksociety.org/w/Research_Plan P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Thanks a lot John, for your reply. This sounds like a great news, that someone like you is being at the position to draf such an action plan. You are right in terms of 'deployment force', and would be good if you see chance that there is a space to talk about things being put forward, as in your courses at Schumaer Collage ( https://www.schumachercollege.org.uk/courses/short-courses/towards-a-common…) and in the Commons Transition plan ( http://commonstransition.org/public-policy-for-a-social-knowledge-economy/) or as in Pat and Lewis' book, amongst others? Probably political composition of actors, and accesibility of the argument in society are negative elements here, would you be able to give us an idea how big is the chance as far as you see? While even the mainstream negative of commons based peer production, the so-called sharing economy*, as well as the right wing version of it 'big society' (in both cases the society is what in real being shared by the rulers) are the global trends, asserted by journals like economist amongst others. One would thins this actually 'the' time to do everything to bring the 'vision' -even if it is at the horizon- which needs concrete resource support to become brighter, to show the potentail it bears giving a hope to broader society(ies). What alterantive would Syriza and we have futrher to get the urgently needed support for, other wise? *This was 2013: http://www.economist.com/news/leaders/21573104-internet-everything-hire-ris… todat we know this trend is actualised further... best, Orsan On 17 February 2015 at 14:18, John <restakis(a)gmail.com> wrote: > Iannis Margaris is an advisor to Yannis Dragasakis, the Vice President > and parjt of the Greek delegation in Brussels. > > My sense is that to talk of an emergency deployment force for commons > action plans, etc. is premature. Re: [P2P-F] [NetworkedLabour] [commoning] [Commoning] Greek Vice-President explicitely endorses commons strategy before parliament

Francine and Michel, you are right that my suggestion of BI (as UBI) for all -no matter what- is incomplete and not a realistic idea. Unless it is thought as money, and not combined with crypto currencies and cooperative production and sharing, also in form of distributed public service production and delivery by citizens p2p, radical decrease in the working hours, and re-regulation of the tax systems. I do agree with Michel here, and the need of realistic and real exit for labour out of market, which we are about to get. I think social security as well as other social and pubic services can be distributed and peer produced, yet the tax for those services had to sieze. Yet I think the perspective you suggest about the class comprimise and its outcomes like welfare state, social security, acceptance of strong union rights like collective bargaining and so on, that is interpreting social security as taking labour out of market and allowing ILO to declare that labour is not commodity is also incomplete and not realistic. As Asbjorn and others showed. One can go further and argue that the welfare state and class comprimise allow capital to hold the labour by coopetation in under the market discipline; that is why all along the 80s and 90s union movement got parallized from inside, and didnt produce right move against neolibaralism, instead standed for it. In this sense unions cadre bear direct responsibility for what has been happening to workers at home and abroad, as well as in the rise of extreme right, and war politics -very similar to the last century. If left parties and unions, see this, accept responsibility, agree with the tax reduction, and accept and encourage political programs that foresee sharnig monetary and political power with the citizen, grassroots movements, I see a great chance for social security and welfare state commons as part of a possibly realistic transition strategy, in practice. Like p2p education, it is possible to design and run p2p insurance and helth services, for instance. On the education side I am working with others on a concrete project, and just met someone from Holland working on a distributed insurence platform, and he thikns it is adoptable for healt and social security insurance. Anyway, when you look at how allirgnment around AlterSummit, Transform, Blockupy, Syriza and Podemos in relation to the above -so far, and how the politically operates and the language used, I got so much discouraged about the possiblility for the thrive of a genuine collaborative, commons and p2p based realistic alliagnce and a vision of alterntive that would give people sense of hope. Sadly what is playes is the old power game, the one brouhgt humanity to this point by reproducing the system when rulers failing to do so. What is needed is the politics that really matches the ethos of solidarity, social and generative. I really wonder who, how, and why would give a European wide support to upcoming ECB action, if it is not clearly backed by a such vision and politics.. Sorry for saying so, hope anyone would hear and respond, preferably in practice. I hope I would fail, and being very much wrong on this one. Orsan Francine Mestrum schreef op 17-2-2015 om 04:05: > Michel, Please do not forget that what social security did was precisely to take out labour from the market. That is why the ILO could state that ‘labour is not a commodity’. Collective bargaining and the power of trade unions are crucial for this. Obviously, many achievements have already been eroded by neoliberalism these past decades, but I think it would be foolish to just abandon that system. > > > > Francine > > > > Van: NetworkedLabour [mailto:[email protected]] Namens Michel Bauwens > Verzonden: 16 February 2015 17:53 > Aan: Anna Harris > CC: Vasilis Niaros; p2p-foundation; Eleftherios Kosmas; commoning(a)listen.jpberlin.de; networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org; George Papanikolaou > Onderwerp: Re: [NetworkedLabour] [commoning] [Commoning] [P2P-F] Greek Vice-President explicitely endorses commons strategy before parliament > > > > Having labor as a dependent commodity is pretty crucial for class power and as Polanyi has shown, it was the very basis for making capitalism into a organic self-reproducing system .. taking labour out of the market would substantially weaken that class power, which is why I personally believe it is not a transitional proposal but a revolutionary one, and so I am rather in favour of other more 'realistic' proposals in a transitional scheme > > > > the 'amount' of the BI is pretty crucial though, the right wishes it very low at subsistence level so as precisely not to disrupt the labor market and make society pay for this basic provision > > > > Michel > > > > On Mon, Feb 16, 2015 at 2:30 PM, Anna Harris <anna(a)shsh.co.uk> wrote: > > I am wondering how a basic income (BI) would change the basis of social power? Our human rights are universal, they are for everyone and are indivisible. There can be no question about that. The real question is how you want to achieve/fulfil these rights and what task is given to public authorities. It is wrong to assume that in order to achieve equality we have to treat all people equally (cfr AK Sen). On the contrary, unequal people have to be treated unequally in order to make them equal. It is only one argument against giving all people a same amount of money (basic income) and thinking you then work for equality. > > > > Francine > > > > Van: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com [mailto:[email protected]] Namens Michel Bauwens > Verzonden: 13 February 2015 16:59 > Aan: Anna Harris > CC: Francine Mestrum; Eleftherios Kosmas; Vasilis Niaros; p2p-foundation; Commoning; Vasilis Kostakis; George Papanikolaou; networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org; Commoning List > Onderwerp: Re: [commoning] [NetworkedLabour] [Commoning] [P2P-F] Greek Vice-President explicitely endorses commons strategy before parliament > > > > though universal coverage may not seem fair, there is a strategic reason for it, which is why the labour movement fought for it: if everyone benefits, everyone also defends it; the danger is that it is seen as something for the poor and needy, thereby losing the political support of the middle classes, > > > > abolishing the welfare state and only helping those that deserve it, is in fact the neoliberal agenda and argumentation today, > > > > Michel > > > > On Fri, Feb 13, 2015 at 3:33 PM, Anna Harris <anna(a)shsh.co.uk> wrote: > > Thank you Francine. Fwd: What happened in the Eurogroup 16 February -

Ioannis requests to forward this message: ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ioannis Margaris <ilmargaris(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Feb 17, 2015 at 7:12 AM Subject: What happened in the Eurogroup 16 February - To: The following paragraphs give the basic story - which might change Europe's future in the coming weeks. Please forward this text to anyone who can contribute at spreading the word in the public domain. I have been member of the Greek delegation these days in Brussels, you can trust these words. In case you forward this, please erase previous e-mail addresses for privacy reasons. As you may have heard things did not go well. There was a compromise deal brokered by Juncker and agreed to by Draghi and Lagarde and Moscovici. But it was sunk by Djisselbloem, presumably on German pressure. In the eurogroup meeting and the subsequent press conference, there was little help from either Lagarde or Moscovici They say => complete the existing programme with some flexibility in implementation on our part but they never tell us what this flexibility will entail. On the contrary, they say sign first and then we will discuss with you areas of flexibility We say => give us a bridging programme and we have spelt out our commitments not only during the bridging period but also for the essential elements of the new compact with our partners long term We have done our best to reach a reasonable compromise. What we have faced is naked power and blackmail. Please pass on this mail to all who might help influence public opinion in the days to come My warm regards, I.M. -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://en.wiki.floksociety.org/w/Research_Plan P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
