Fwd: [fcf_discussion] European Commission Public Consultation on Copyright: La Quadrature du Net's Answer
by Michel Bauwens 16 Feb '14

16 Feb '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Fri, Feb 14, 2014 at 4:14 AM Subject: [fcf_discussion] European Commission Public Consultation on Copyright: La Quadrature du Net's Answer To: fcforum_discussion(a)list.fcforum.net Themes: COPYRIGHT, PUBLIC CONSULTATION, EUROPEAN COMMISSION, SHARING La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/european-commission-public-consultation-on-… European Commission Public Consultation on Copyright: La Quadrature du Net's Answer *** Paris, 14 February 2014 -- The European Commission's public consultation [1] on copyright reform is open until 5 March [The European Commission extended the deadline by a month]. This consultation represents an important opportunity for European citizens to demand that access to culture and knowledge be recognised as their fundamental right. It also allows the interests of authors and creators to be defended against those of the cultural industries, major distributors and intermediaries, and heirs of right holders who currently receive the greatest share of income from copyrighted works. La Quadrature du Net therefore calls on the maximum of citizens and organisations to reply to the consultation [2] and support a positive reform of copyright. *** Today La Quadrature du Net publishes its version submission [3] to the consultation in English, and reaffirms its critics [4] concerning the Commission's questionnaire, blinkered and short-sighted framing, and which fails to address the key question of the legalisation of non-commercial sharing between individuals. Furthermore, it betrays the underlying assumption that further intensification and implementation of repressive measures against copyright violations is necessary and unavoidable. This submission rejects these limitations and opens up the debate from a clean slate and proposes a solid, transparent and coherent proposal for reform. La Quadrature du Net calls on all citizens and organisations to use it to prepare and to send their submission to the Commission, and put on line some advise and assistance [2]. "Responding to this consultation is only the first step. We will follow the analysis of submissions and all legislative actions and contractual policies in Europe and France. To carry forward the will of citizens as expressed during the successful mobilisation against ACTA is a democratic duty" conclude Lionel Maurel and Philippe Aigrain, members of the Strategic Council of La Quadrature du Net. * References * 1. http://ec.europa.eu/internal_market/consultations/2013/copyright-rules/inde… 2. https://www.laquadrature.net/wiki/European_Commission_Consultation 3. https://www.laquadrature.net/files/La_Quadrature_du_Net_s_response_to_the_E… 4. https://www.laquadrature.net/en/fundamental-cultural-rights-must-be-at-the-… ** About La Quadrature du Net ** La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that defends the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. In addition to its advocacy work, the group also aims to foster a better understanding of legislative processes among citizens. Through specific and pertinent information and tools, La Quadrature du Net hopes to encourage citizens' participation in the public debate on rights and freedoms in the digital age. The panel is organised for the 4S/ESOCITE conference in Buenos Aires, 20-23 August 2014. You are welcome to get in touch with us to discuss abstracts informally. Deadline: March 3 2014 Conference website: http://www.4sonline.org/meeting ---- 63. Peer production and open collaboration: Revisiting closure, stabilisation and black boxing through unfinished artefacts maxigas and Eduard Aibar This panel seeks to bring together scholars studying peer production processes through STS lenses and concepts. Peer production is a form of network-based voluntary cooperation aimed at contributing to a commons, epitomised by the Linux kernel and Wikipedia and more recently applied to hardware. Case studies of peer production projects can inspire new theoretical developments within STS and simultaneously engender insights on emerging socio-technical ensembles. Peer producers work a lot to fend off stabilisation, building functional parts (like loose couplings and Application Programming Interfaces) into technologies and organisations which serve to prevent closure. While these mechanisms for openness do stabilise, the resulting technologies are not exactly black boxes whose functional composition is rendered inaccessible to gaze, discourse and engineering. They can be understood as "unfinished artefacts". Moreover, shared machine workshops manifest a model which goes against the received wisdom of trade-offs between "professional" expertise and radically open "amateur" contributions. Such open organisational architectures blend in three functions traditionally separate in modern institutions: education, research and production. In this context citizen participation in technological issues is mainly achieved by practical interventions into research and development. We call for contributors who explore peer production specific projects from a wide range of STS perspectives. One is how stabilisation, closure and black boxing are themselves socially constructed, deconstructed and reconfigured in this arena. Another is the broader structural implications of peer production, since it is usually read as an emerging mode of production with disruptive consequences. Finally, since peer production is increasingly used in a wide range of settings (software development, knowledge production, infrastructure building or farming), the way it is re-enacted and appropriated by new actors can also be of interest to scholars with various theoretical backgrounds. Fwd: [commoning] Stirring Papers for Degrowth Conference
by Michel Bauwens 13 Feb '14

13 Feb '14

---------- Forw Dear colleagues We would like to call on your attention to the group-assembly process (GAP) taking place at the 4th International Conference on Degrowth for Ecological Sustainability and Social Equity and invite you to be an important part of this mind-opening process. The GAP process in Leipzig will be a major democratic experiment: a process where many conference participants - practitioners, artists, policy-makers, activists and scientists - equally discuss different issues of degrowth debate in a three-day in-depth-process. We are aiming at having high quality, outcome-oriented discussions, able to push forward the degrowth debate in academia and society. The GAP process offers therefore a good opportunity to deepen the discussions of your panel. Below you can find more information about what is GAP and what a stirring paper should look like. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us via gap(a)degrowth.de. We are happy to hear from your proposals to engage in the collective construction of the degrowth debate and movement! The GAP organising committee, Andrea Vetter Filka Sekulova François Schneider Gualter Baptista Matthias Schmelzer Susanne Brehm What is the Group Assembly Process (GAP)? The Group Assembly Process (GAP) is an outcome-oriented three-day working process among participants at the degrowth conference. It aims at establishing an exchange between scientists, practitioners, artists, policy-makers and activists. The goal is on the one hand to develop concrete proposals for a degrowth society in a common process of collective and democratic consensus building. On the other hand we want to map existing areas of dissent and open questions for debate and research. What is a stirring paper? A stirring paper is a short and comprehensible text that will serve as inspiration for a working group in the GAP-process. Scientists, practitioners, artists and activists alike are invited to submit stirring papers. They should be aimed at introducing new proposals or debates for a certain aspect of degrowth and at stirring discussions that are also relevant to non-scientists. A stirring paper should summarise the discussions and key arguments of the issues raised, it can be polemic and should be easily understandable. It should have 1000 to 1500 words. Stirring papers can be submitted until February 31, 2014. Authors should be able and willing to participate in the working group during all three days, and ideally join preliminary discussions of the online working group. The submitted abstracts for stirring papers will be selected and grouped into working groups by the conference organizers in collaboration with Research & Degrowth and then be subjected to an open peer review process.
