It is hard for most Americans to realize that our country's longstanding position as the world's leading democracy is in danger. When three reports converge, it is time to wake-up. Freedom of the press, the foundation of democracy, is fast declining in the US. *State of Power 2014* tells the story of corporations in collusion with governments increasing their power at the expense of the people. And finally the threat to our privacy and freedom from pervasive forms of surveillance. There is good news, as well, with the announcement of the New Story Summit to take place in September 2014 at Findhorn. We are excited to be part of this Summit. In addition, we bring you Part Four of the Collective Presencing Series that has been so popular with our readers. It describes the generative nature of "We-Space" at the subtle levels. Enjoy and learn together. Warmly, Nancy <http://www.kosmosjournal.org/CampaignProcess.aspx?A=Link&VID=50108458&KID=2…> GARDEN HARVEST AT FINDHORN *ANNOUNCING THE NEW STORY SUMMIT* "For people, generally, their story of the universe and the human role in the universe is their primary source of intelligibility and value...The deepest crises experienced by any society are those moments of change when the story becomes inadequate for meeting the survival demands of a present situation." *By Thomas Berry, Dream of the Earth* Already oversubscribed, Findhorn Foundation will host a summit from 9/27-10/3/2014 offered as a gift to the world and based on the Gift Economy, with such notables as Charles Eisenstein, Satish Kumar, Elisabet Sahtouris and more. Fortunately, *Kosmos* signed up in time and will be participating in this extraordinary event. We will keep you informed. An alarming decline in freedom of the press for the US, is based primarily on information and the First Amendment being sacrificed for national security and surveillance--in particular the pursuit of Private Bradley Manning and Edward Snowden. Also sited, is the Department of Justice's seizure of Associated Press phone records. China (175th) continues to jail dissident bloggers and journalists. "Unless we know which elites control our wealth and resources, understand how they influence political and social processes, and can identify the systems, structures and policies by which they maintain their power, TNI believes our hopes for advancing social and environmental justice are slim." *Kosmos* especially recommends Hilary Wainwright's article: *State of Counter-Power - How understanding neoliberalism's cultural underpinnings can equip movements to overthrow it.* Read the State of Power 2014 Report<http://www.kosmosjournal.org/CampaignProcess.aspx?A=Link&VID=50108458&KID=2…>. <http://www.kosmosjournal.org/CampaignProcess.aspx?A=Link&VID=50108458&KID=2…> SURVEILLANCE IN THE US *INTERNET FREEDOM AND COVERT SURVEILLANCE* By Michael Gurstein "Given the possibilities of total electronic surveillance (in the immortal words of General Alexander, the current head of the NSA--Total Information Dominance)--and the absence of any effective controls on the use of surveillance information for whatever purposes, the possibilities (and temptations) for the misuse of this information are effectively overwhelming. Those with access to this information are in a position to put this information to use for national or corporate economic advantage, for political manipulation, for individual targeting, for blackmail or personal manipulation and even when used as a mechanical input into drone warfare as a substitute for judge and jury in the rendering of the most potent of judgments and penalties--that of death." Example of email sent ( feel free to copy, and repost, while signing with your own name at the end of the message ) ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Feb 19, 2014 at 2:41 AM Subject: Please save the Internet To: dimitrios.droutsas(a)europarl.europa.eu Dear Dimitrios Droutsas, The decisions that you and your colleagues will make this week will have a lasting impact on the open internet in Europe. It's critical to get this right and not accept bad compromises. The Commission's current proposal on a "Telecoms Single Market" includes provisions undermining network neutrality by permitting pervasive networks discrimination, to the detriment of user rights and the single market. As a first step, ITRE members must remove the current definition of "specialized services", closing a dangerous loophole that would create a two-tiered internet, strangling online innovation, competition, diversity, and the exercise of human rights on the internet. I urge you to adopt the robust definition of "network neutrality" put forward by the CULT committee, one that ensures that internet providers do not block or discriminate against content, websites, applications, or services; that online innovation isn't stifled; that anti-competitive practices don't flourish. Finally, while some progress in the ITRE Committee has been made, it is critical that members stand their ground and address the remaining problematic issues in the Rapporteur's compromise amendments. A compromise that allows a few loopholes that destroy the open internet instead of many loopholes that would destroy the open internet is not an acceptable compromise. Sincerely,

And for the past 80 years, 99% of Americans have been forbidden from investing in early stage, privately held companies, on the premise that such investments should be limited to the super wealthy. But today things are changing. Securities-based Crowdfunding, which is expected to begin in late 2014 or early 2015, will open up early stage investing to all Americans, giving them access to investment opportunities previously monopolized traditional venture capital and high net-worth investors. PeoplesVC, an equity-based Crowdfunding Company headquartered in Southern New Hampshire, is democratizing Venture Capital and early stage investing, by creating a platform that will allow all Americans to access prized deals. Through a sponsorship with the MIT Enterprise Forum, PeoplesVC seeks to identify promising emerging high technology startups and help these startups raise capital from the general public. "I am excited about the prospect of opening up investment opportunities in promising high technology companies to all Americans," commented Akhil Garland, CEO of PeoplesVC, Inc, "a new wave of capital formation is coming, and it is thrilling to help create new, meaningful jobs in our country," Garland added. "I am delighted to welcome PeoplesVC as our newest partner in serving the needs of entrepreneurs and early stage privately held companies," commented Lesa Lassard Pearson, Executive Director, MIT Enterprise Forum of Cambridge, "PeoplesVC will bring a new perspective to the MIT Enterprise Forum of Cambridge and I look forward to seeing how that perspective plays out in our community," Pearson added. *About MIT Enterprise Forum* The MIT Enterprise Forum<http://track.bellevate.com/z.z?l=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5taXRlZi5vcmcv&r=3638892430&…>is the preeminent organization of entrepreneurs in the global innovation economy. *About PeoplesVC.com* Peoples Venture Capital (Peoples VC) was founded to create American jobs. Fwd: [fcf_discussion] EU Parliament Negotiations on Net Neutrality Taking a Disastrous Turn
by Michel Bauwens 19 Feb '14

19 Feb '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Tue, Feb 18, 2014 at 5:39 AM Subject: [fcf_discussion] EU Parliament Negotiations on Net Neutrality Taking a Disastrous Turn To: fcforum_discussion(a)list.fcforum.net Themes: NET NEUTRALITY, EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, PILAR DEL CASTILLO VERA, CATHERINE TRAUTMANN, JENS ROHDE, NEELIE KROES La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/eu-parliament-negotiations-on-net-neutralit… EU Parliament Negotiations on Net Neutrality Taking a Disastrous Turn *** Paris, 18 February 2014 -- On 24 February, the "Industry" (ITRE) committee of the European Parliament will take a crucial decision for the future of Net Neutrality in Europe, by adopting its report, on the basis of which the whole Parliament will vote. As things currently stand, Members of the European Parliament in ITRE still have the possibility to ensure a genuine and unconditional Net Neutrality principle, as proposed [1] by others committees, so as to protect freedom of expression and online innovation. But instead, all might be lost because the liberal (ALDE) and socio-democrat (S&D) political groups seem ready to adopt the disastrous proposals made by Pilar Del Castillo Vera, the lead rapporteur in charge of this dossier. Unless citizens act and key MEPs show political leadership, we may be about to lose the Internet as we know it. *** On 24 February, the "Industry" (ITRE) committee will vote on its final report on Kroes' anti-Net Neutrality proposal [2]. As demonstrated by the "Civil Liberties" (LIBE) committee's vote [1] last week, MEPs have the opportunity to implement effective safeguards to protect Net Neutrality by correcting the huge loopholes of the text. But in the ITRE committee, the negotiations behind closed doors between political groups on so-called "compromise amendments" have taken an extremeley worrying turn, as the principle of Net Neutrality is being turned upside down to please the telcos. Current versions of compromise amendments [3] (commented by La Quadrature du Net) would allow telecom operators to: - degrade certain types of traffic (e.g. peer-to-peer) while letting other types of traffic enjoy a normal delivery [4]; - make deals with Internet services (e.g. YouTube or Netflix) to grant them priorised delivery through so-called specialised services [5]. Currently, only the centrist/liberal (ALDE) and socio-democrat (S&D) groups, led respectively by Jens Rohde (DK - ALDE) and Catherine Trautmann (FR - S&D), are in the position to oppose the rapporteur and positively influence the outcome of next week's ITRE vote. It seems however that Mrs. Trautmann does not firmly endorse the positions adopted in the LIBE committee, and could be ready to accept the rapporteur's compromise amendments even though they fail to protect Net Neutrality. Only in this way can they ensure that ITRE will propose to the EU Parliament to adopt a meaningful protection of Net Neutrality. In the coming days, it is urgent and imperative for European citizens to get involved [6] and urge these MEPs to protect the public interest by following the opinion of the "Civil Liberties" committee rather than the dangerous position of rapporteur Pilar Del Castillo. The vote on the final ITRE report will take place on Monday, 24 February at the EU Parliament in Strasburg, France. "In these ongoing secret negotiations, lead MEPs in charge of this dossier are about to give up on Net Neutrality, letting big corporations discriminate our Internet communications and dominate [7] the digital economy. In the coming days, European representatives who really care for the Internet commons will have to show leadership, by pushing for a real definition of Net Neutrality and making sure that it is not bypassed through so-called ''specialised services"", says Félix Tréguer, cofounder of the association La Quadrature du Net. "On 24 February, we have a unique opportunity to move toward the establishment of a genuine and unconditional Net Neutrality in Europe, but citizen participation is urgently needed. The ACTA vote showed that MEPs could be influenced by a broad citizen mobilisation. It is still the case today, especially with the upcoming European elections [8]", concludes Yoann Spicher, campaign coordinator at La Quadrature du Net. Every European citizen can act to influence the evolution of Net Neutrality by calling on their MEPs [9] to establish solid protections of the free Internet. To get on board, please visit the campaign website savetheinternet.eu. * References * 1. https://www.laquadrature.net/en/eu-parliament-civil-liberties-committee-pav… 2. https://www.laquadrature.net/en/kroes-unacceptable-anti-net-neutrality-law-… 3. https://www.laquadrature.net/files/20140218_ITRE_NetNeutrality_DraftCA4_Ope… 4. Rapporteur Del Castillo shamelessly proposes in recital 45 that Net Neutrality be defined as the principle according to which only equivalent traffic be treated equally, allowing for different quality of service for e.g. video traffic and VOIP traffic. In many other policy arenas, it is well understood and consensusal that Net Neutrality implies that all types of traffic are treated equally, as specified in the LIBE's opinion report 5. By refusing to ban the delivery of specialised services for Internet services (or services "functionally identical" to such services) (a ban recommended by the LIBE report), articles 2.15 and 23.2 as proposed in ITRE open the door to the priorisation of Internet services in a way which would completely bypass the Net Neutrality principle and undermine fair competition in the digital economy. Priorisation of Internet services or functionally identical services demands much more in-depth analysis before it should even be considered to be authorised by law, as it entails serious threats to innovation and fair competition in the digital economy. After the adoption of the regulation that must ban such priorisation, a debate should be held to define strong and detailed legal and technical non-discrimination safeguards to ensure that any content or service provider can benefit from such priorisation, free of discrimination, at reasonable rates and subject to reasonable terms and conditions. Such safeguard should be much clearer that the vague non-discrimination principle at the end of article 23.2. For instance, safeguards should include prior authorisation by National Regulatory Authorities (NRA) of classes of specialised services, with strong presumption against specialised services raising anti-competitive risk to Internet services; prior registration, transparence and careful assessment of any specialised services activated by providers of electronic communication; technical framework regarding interconnection and admission control, etc.). Such a public debate should include SMEs, civil society organisations, and NRAs, who were not consulted on this specific issue. Note that existing specialised services, e.g. for VoIP and TVoIP, are not "functionally identical" to best-effort Internet VoIP (e.g. Skype) or streamed TV programmes, and would not be hampered by LQDN's proposed version of articles 2.15 and 23.2. 6. http://www.savetheinternet.eu/ 7. http://edri.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/1pager_SMEs.pdf 8. http://www.wepromise.eu/ 9. https://www.laquadrature.net/wiki/How_to_contact_a_MEP ** About La Quadrature du Net ** La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that defends the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. Mouans-Sartoux Engaging an intelligent territory into open source Mouans-Sartoux is a small town which claimed its autonomy since the Middle Ages. These projects are currently being documented to enhance the pollination of ideas with this pioneering approach based on open source and digital innovations. Mouans-Sartoux is also planning to launch new projects aimed at societal innovation with this open approach, so as to disseminate best practices beyond its boundaries. Ont émergé ainsi de nouveaux lieux d'apprentissage et de travail en commun. Cette dynamique est étudiée ici dans le cas exemplaire du Comptoir numérique à Saint-Étienne. Il reste à banaliser le vocabulaire de ces expérimentations pour les rendre complètement accessibles. Democratizing << third spaces >> New technologies are now accessible to everyone in public spaces of all kinds where individuals driven by their passion happily share their knowledge without prerequisite with anyone interested. Hence new spaces for learning and practicing as communities have blossomed. This dynamics is exposed here through the study case of the "Comptoir Numérique" in Saint-Étienne. What remains to be done is to simplify the vocabulary used in these experiences to make them fully accessible to everyone. Milam Immediate Release: January 8, 2014 *530.272.4322/Nature(a)TheRightsofNature.org <530.272.4322/Nature(a)TheRightsofNature.org> * *GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR THE EMERGENT "RIGHTS OF NATURE" MOVEMENT TO HOLD ITS FIRST INTERNATIONAL SUMMIT FOLLOWED BY A PUBLIC TRIBUNAL OF ACTUAL CASES * *OTAVALO & QUITO, ECUADOR: JANUARY 13-17 <13-17>, 2014* Key leaders of the emergent nature rights movement are holding an international summit in Ecuador on January 13-17, 2014. Its twofold purpose is to analyze the experiences of communities in Ecuador, Bolivia, and United States that have already implemented "Rights of Nature" laws and to devise a unified global strategy for advancing the Rights of Nature movement around the world. The summit will conclude on Friday, January 17, with a public Tribunal in Quito where key Rights of Nature cases will be heard, including the Chevron/Texaco case in Ecuador, the oil exploitation of Yasuní-ITT in Ecuador's rainforest, and the threats to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Drawing on precedents established in other successful Rights of Nature cases - such as the one finding that the rights of the Vilcabamba River had been violated by pollution - the Tribunal will model how to adjudicate the rights of nature in courts of law. The four-dozen principals attending the summit represent diverse disciplines, cultures, nations, and bioregions as part of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature. Among the attendees are Indian physicist Vandana Shiva, South African lawyer and author Cormac Cullinan, North American indigenous leader Tom Goldtooth, former Bolivian U.N. ambassador Pablo Solón, Canadian aboriginal actress Tantoo Cardinal, and U.S. community rights attorney Thomas Linzey. The group as a whole is comprised of economists, lawyers, scientists, indigenous leaders, community activists, nuns, actors, authors, and public officials hailing from Australia, Switzerland, South Africa, United States, Spain, Canada, India, Romania, Bolivia, Argentina, and England, as well as Ecuador. The summit marks the first time leaders of the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature are coming together since 2010 when they created the organization as a vehicle to help advance the cutting edge work that each was carrying out in his or her home country. The historic 2010 gathering that forged the Global Alliance also was held in Ecuador, the first nation in the world to adopt Rights of Nature in its Constitution, in 2008. *The Tribunal will be held on Friday, January 17, at Hotel Quito, in Quito, where the Global Alliance will also host a Press Conference to report the results of the summit and next steps for the Rights of Nature movement. The Press Conference is at 10:30 am. The Tribunal will consider seven cases and run from 8:30 am to 17:00 pm. Press kits for the Tribunal will be available.* "The Rights of Nature movement is a response in the order of magnitude necessary to end the legalized plundering that is ravaging our planet and imperiling our young and the young of all species," says Robin R. Milam, Administrative Director of the Global Alliance for Rights of Nature. "By recognizing nature's right to exist and thrive, people can assert those rights on nature's behalf, rejecting actions that permit harmful, unwanted development in their communities." *Rights of Nature: Background* The Rights of Nature movement draws on indigenous wisdom in positing a new jurisprudence that recognizes the right of nature in all its forms to exist, persist, evolve and regenerate. "A 40-year regime of environmental laws in the United States and other industrial nations has failed to protect against the escalating ravages evident around the world, including decimated species, depleted forest reserves, water shortages, and record-breaking hurricanes," says Robin R. Milam, Administrative Director of the Global Alliance for Rights of Nature. "An entirely new approach is needed." Recognizing the rights of nature, which humans would have standing to enforce, reflects a shift in consciousness away from a legal system that treats nature as property for human use. "It is akin to the shift in consciousness - and change in laws - that took place when people said we should stop treating women, enslaved, or indigenous people as property," Milam said. "And it is foundational: Human rights are meaningless without fresh water to drink, clean air to breath, safe food to eat." Local municipalities in the United States were the first to adopt laws establishing legal structures that recognized Rights of Nature, beginning in 2006 with Tamaqua Borough in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Since then more than two-dozen U.S. communities have adopted local laws recognizing Rights of Nature, including Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which in November of 2010 became the first major municipality in the United States to do so. In September 2008, Ecuador became the first country in the world to recognize Rights of Nature in its constitution and Bolivia enacted a law that recognizes rights of Mother Earth. Nearly 100 grassroots organizations in the Americas, Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe are members of the Global Alliance for Rights of Nature, advancing the Rights of Nature movement in their municipalities, counties, provinces, and countries. The Rights of Nature movement is grounded conceptually in an understanding that humans are one part of an interdependent community of life on Earth. Human existence--in all its social, economic, industrial, cultural, and governmental manifestations--is wholly dependent on the health of rivers, plants, animals, oceans, forests, atmosphere, microbes, and other ecosystems and beings that with us comprise our living planet. Beyond enlightened self-interest, the Rights of Nature movement also emerges philosophically and spiritually out of a sense of the wonder and awe that the natural world has inspired in humans for millennia, captured in art, music, and poetry--and our sense of the sacred. The world has experienced a global crisis of capitalism that started in 2008 and is continuing until now. It has been accompanied by a crisis of the state and a general crisis of legitimation of dominant ideologies such as neoliberalism. Responses to the crisis have been variegated and have included austerity measures of the state that have hit the weakest, an increased presence of progressive protests, revolutions and strikes that have made use of digital, social and traditional media in various ways, the rise of far-right movements and parties in many parts of Europe and other parts of the world, the Greek state’s closing down of public service broadcaster ERT and increased commercial pressure on public service broadcasting in general, new debates about how to strengthen public service media, increased socio-economic and class inequality in many parts of the world and at a global level, precarious forms of work in general and in the media and cultural industries in particular, the emergence of new media reform movements, an extension and intensification of the crisis of newspapers and the print media, an increasing shift of advertising budgets to targeted ads on the Internet and along with this development the rise of commercial “social media” platforms, Edward Snowden’s revelations about the existence of a global surveillance-industrial complex that operates a communications surveillance system called “Prism” that involves the NSA and media companies such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Yahoo!, AOL, Skype, Apple and Paltalk; discussions about the power and freedom of the press in light of the Levenson inquiry, shifting geographies of the political and media landscape that have to do with the economic rise of countries such as China and India. Given this context, the main questions that ESA RN18’s 2014 conference asks and to which it invites contributions are: How has the crisis affected the media and communication landscape in Europe and globally and what perspectives for the future of media and communications are there? What suggestions for media reforms are there? How feasible are they? What kind of media policies and reforms do we need today? Which ones should be avoided? Are we in this context likely to experience a renewal of neoliberalism or something different? Plenary sessions: 1) Keynote Talk: Prof. Peter Ludes (Jacobs University Bremen, Germany): Wanted: Critical Visual Theories! 2) Special Session: Public Media and Alternative Journalism in Romania With Dr. Raluca Petre (‘Ovidius’ University Constanta, Romania): On the Distinction between State and Public Media: Re-Centering Public Options; Dr. Antonio Momoc (University of Bucharest, Romania): Alternative Media as Public Service Journalism; Costi Rogozanu (journalist and media activist, criticatac.ro) – Is Alternative Media an Alternative?
