He finds the current shift in vocabulary very worrying: Nature has become *natural capital* Natural processes have become *ecosystem services*, as they exist only to serve us. Ecosystems (hills, forests, river catchments, etc.) are now *green infrastructure* Biodiversity and habitats are now *asset classes* within an *ecosystem market* He basically argues that all the hype around these new terms and concepts carries with it the privatization of nature. He uses private ownership of land, exemplified by the enclosure of the commons<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inclosure_Acts>, as an illustration of that privatization process. ... continued on http://blog.ecosystem-services.org/2012/08/07/sharing-natures-bounty-or-man… further reference http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2012/aug/06/price-rivers-rain-grea… -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

towards a p2p eco-lab in vilcapamba, ecuador
by Michel Bauwens 04 Feb '14

04 Feb '14

a copy of a short notice I sent to the p2p fb group in ecuador: dear friends, you will hear more from this ... I am returning from the Garden of Paradise, near Vilcabamba, the valley of long life in Loja province, Ecaudor ... I have seen the future of the physicalisation of the peer foundation, at least one form of it. I met Norie Hurdle and her partner Richard Wheeler. The place is magic and full of potential. So, I have been thinking about the creation of a p2p eco-lab to test open sustainable technologies, to do seminars, retreats, publishing and multimedia activities. It will probably start with me going there for three months in the spring each year. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

---------- Forwarded message ---------- F Subject: THailand- 7.5 million tweets in just 24 hours. December 1, 2013 was a day of massive political protests on the streets of Bangkok. *Subject:* 7.5 million tweets in just 24 hours. December 1, 2013 was a day of massive political protests on the streets of Bangkok. A *95.5 million mobile phones out of a population of 67 million* is a big number indeed. How many of them are active on social networks? *The people of Thailand are addicted to social networks <http://www.techinasia.com/thais-addicted-social-media/>*. There are 24 million users on Facebook<http://www.techinasia.com/facebook-thailand-grows-to-24-million-users-infog…>in the country, and a mall in Bangkok is the most instagramed place<http://www.techinasia.com/facebook-thailand-grows-to-24-million-users-infog…>in the world. Twitter has fallen off the radar recently, but that doesn't mean it's not popular in Thailand. ThaiTrend <http://www.lab.in.th/thaitrend/>, which collects information on Twitter in the nation, has revealed that throughout 2013 there were *more than 1.7 billion tweets <https://twitter.com/thaitrend/status/418307916169347072> in the Thai language.* Those were tweeted by 1.73 million users. Of those 1.7 billion tweets <https://twitter.com/thaitrend/status/418310720644595713>, there were 800 million new tweets, 450 million mentions, and *150 million conversations (replies*). Throughout the whole of 2013, there were 450,000 new subscribers<https://twitter.com/thaitrend/status/418311018746372096>who tweeted at least once. ThaiTrend claims that there's 45 percent more Twitter usage and 35 percent user growth<https://twitter.com/thaitrend/status/418318876451954688>on Twitter in Thailand in the past year, compared to 2012. *December 1, 2013, was the day with the highest number of tweets posted in Thai - a total 7.5 million tweets in just 24 hours. That was a day of massive political protests <http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/dec/01/thailand-protest-yingluck-shin…> on the streets of Bangkok*. On average, there were about 4.5 million<https://twitter.com/thaitrend/status/418313212501577728>tweets sent out per day in Thai. However, during school breaks or holidays, the number of Twitter messages often shot up to five to six million tweets per day. In terms of Thai Twitter demographics<https://twitter.com/thaitrend/status/418313841533927424>, 35 percent of users are school age, while the other 65 percent are of working age. *ThaiTrend claims that most Thai people on Twitter are on the social network to follow stars and celebrities.* http://www.techinasia.com/thailands-twitterers-tweeted-17-billion-messages-… ar -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: [Networkedlabour] 2dh5-festival for activists and world-changers Jan 31- feb 2 in The Hague

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Örsan Şenalp <orsan1234(a)gmail.com> Date: Sat, Feb 1, 2014 at 10:18 AM Subject: [Networkedlabour] 2dh5-festival for activists and world-changers Jan 31- feb 2 in The Hague To: "networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org" <networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org > This one started yesterday, am not sure if I posted before, take it as reminder it it is the case! -- orsan 2dh5-festival for activists and world-changers Jan 31- feb 2 in The Hague Posted on January 27, 2014by orsans The Hague will be the venue for the 9th edition of the 2dh5-festival. Almost 10 years ago we started organizing such a festival because we thought it would be good to organize space for the exchange of information and knowledge about methods, tactics and strategies to achieve change. The name 2dh5 stems from a bold and mostly fatal chess move. We like to move around with the festival and choose a new city every second year. This time it will be held in the capital of the Low Countries, The Hague. The main program (two days of workshops and presentations) will be in neighborhood center Sam Sam in the Schilderswijk, near train station Holland Spoor (Van Mierisstraat 226). The workshops are about many different subjects, from art and juridical struggle, to migrants issues, historical developments and the significance of analysis. Some workshops are very practical (preparing for next blockupy, destroying amazon.com, safety on internet) while others are more theoretical. See the program on the website: http://www.2dh5.nl/den-haag-2014/programma The theme of this festival is the importance of history for actual movements and activists. The festival is all DIY and low-budget, but we also try to 'offer quality'. But we expect participants to help out and play an active role in the program. The festival already starts on Friday January 31 with a quiz and some cultural fun at another place (De Pander-Bar, Binnendoor 32, at 20:00) On Saturday evening there will be a party, with also some serious elements. The main theme will be the 20th anniversary of the Zapatista insurrection (and all the other insurrections they inspired). This will be in De Vinger-bar, Bagijnestraat 25) But workshops and presentations will continue at Sam Sam on Sunday again. The Sunday program starts with a lecture given by Dennis Bos, Historian from the University of Leiden, on the awkward relation between radical movements and the parliamentarian institutions in The Hague. We ask for a participation fee of 5 euro, and we serve food at cost prices. We urge people who want to stay overnight to find lodging with friends, but can offer rudimentary sleeping place (if people bring a camping mattress and sleeping bag, and register at: slaapplek(a)2dh5.nl) Some workshops will be in English, but most are in Dutch. If wanted we will try to provide a whisper-translation-corner at each workshop. http://www.2dh5.nl/over-2-dh5 _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

HOW DO WE ACHIEVE COMMONS-ORIENTED PHASE TRANSITION ?
by Michel Bauwens 01 Feb '14

01 Feb '14

HOW DO WE ACHIEVE COMMONS-ORIENTED PHASE TRANSITION ? thanks for reading this: today we have a paradox, the more communistic the sharing license we use, the more capitalistic the practice, with the Linux commons becoming a corporate commons enriching IBM and the like ... it works in a certain way, and seems acceptable to most free software developers, but is it the only way. Hence, an alternative, having the choice not just for non-reciprocal communist licenses such as the GPL, but introducing a median choice of socialist licenses, based on reciprocity. This is the choice of http://p2pfoundation.net/Peer_Production_License<http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fp2pfoundation.net%2FPeer_Produ…>; it is not to be confused with the cc non commercial, as the logic is different; this is not to offer protection to individuals reluctant to share, but to enable and empower a counter-hegemonic reciprocal economy that combines commons that are open to all that contribute, while charging a license fee for the the forprofit companies who want to use without contributing. The PPL was originally designed by 'venture communist' dmytri kleiner and you can find it discussed at http://p2pfoundation.net/Bauwens,_Kleiner,_Restakis_on_Cooperative,_Commons…<http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fp2pfoundation.net%2FBauwens%2C…> (ful ltranscript now available) The PPL is used experimentally by Guerilla Translations! and perhaps a few others. It links the commons to a enterpreneurial coalition of ethical market entitities (coops and other models) and keeps the surplus value entirely within the sphere of commoners/cooperators instead of leaking out to the multinations. As this is the key contradiction of the liberal licenses (though they use the communist logic of from each according to their free contributions, to all according to need) which subsume free software to for-profit dynamics, i.e. that the only way to sustain livelyhoods, remains the selling of labour for capital accumulation; the PPL changes this, as it allows commoners to create their own market entities, keeping the surplus value into the commons sphere, thereby allowing a proto-mode of production (peer production) to become a fully autonomous mode of commons oriented peer production. It creates a counter-economy that can be the basis for reconstituting a 'counter-hegemony' with a for-benefit circulation of value, which allied to pro-commons social movements, could be the basis of the political and social transformation of the political economy. Moreover, inside the ethical economy, the application of open book accounting and open supply chains, would allow a different value circulation, whereby the stigmergic mutual coordinationt that already works at scale for immaterial cooperation and production, would move to the coordination of physical production, creating post-market dynamics of allocation in the physical sphere. Finally, this can be strengthened by creating commoms-based venture funding, so as to create material commons, as proposed by Dmytri Kleiner. In this way, the machine park itself is taken out of the sphere of capital accumulation. Hence, as this process strengthens, and is accompanied by the growth of social and political power, the circulation of capital is replaced by a full circulation of the commons. The phase transition has effectively occured. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

And complexity theory, it turns out, can reveal a lot about how the economy works. Glattfelder shares a groundbreaking study of how control flows through the global economy, and how concentration of power in the hands of a shockingly small number leaves us all vulnerable.
