update on the FON wireless project
by Michel Bauwens 07 Jul '11

07 Jul '11

thanks Steven, if you spot any recent article on their status, thanks for letting me know, Michel Topic: update on the FON wireless project Steven Leeman <steven.leeman(a)gmail.com> Jul 06 12:05AM -0700 ^ Hi, FON works according to the "sharing" principle.... you share your wifi at home...I do thesame..when you visit my home you can get online as well... this worked nicely but it's exploding fast now that ISP's are also using it in their internet wifi routers like BT (England), ZON (Portugal), Comstar Russia, Softbank Japan... and within a few months also Belgacom will activate it on their million of subscribers... It works with "isolated modus" so if you launch a neighbourhood scanner you will only find yourself and the fonspot... not the others connected to it... it works with a captive portal... so everybody has to give their ID... but you can "remember" your credentials or you can use a "connection manager" available for many platforms (www.easywifi.com) that use the WISPR protocol and in some countries like BT & Belgacom the public wifi signal will be using a seperate ppoe session with a different public ip not traceable to the internet modem user.... at the moment there are more than 4 million fonspots ... and more isp's are joining soon!!! it's still possible to flash a linksys WRT54GL with FON firmware or buy a cheap fonera if your with an ISP that didn't join this network of Cigar Smokers :-) -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Semantic graphs of French Intellectual Property Rights
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 07 Jul '11

07 Jul '11

http://gephi.org/2008/semantic-graphs-french-ipr/ Semantic graphs of French IPR<http://gephi.org/2008/semantic-graphs-french-ipr/> 26 October 2008 [image: Main semantic graph of French intellectual property rights]<http://web-mining.fr/files/droit_auteur/carto_droit_auteur_generale.pdf> [image: Semantic graph of French contract rights]<http://web-mining.fr/files/droit_auteur/carto_droit_des_contrats.pdf> These work-in-progress maps are a study produced the last spring for the economist Yann Moulier-Boutang, law professor at the engineer school UTC<http://www.utc.fr/>. They represent the linked terms of vocabulary used on the Web to talk about the *intellectual property rights* in French language. Datasets come from Exalead SA <http://exalead.com/> (web/intranet search engine). Each node is a term and each edge exists when two terms or expressions are co-cited on a sufficient number of web pages, over more than 120,000 pages. *1283 expressions and 4984 co-citing links* have been selected, assuming a representative approach against an exhaustive one. *Semantic clusters* are represented with node colors in the general map. The contract rights map shows the *“imprint”* of this cluster (red nodes) inside the overall graph (in grey). The last image is a test to display the imprint of two meta-clusters : the vocabulary of intellectual property rights (in red) versus the one of industrial property rights (in blue). *How we did this ?* After an information extraction phase from the Exalead databases and a manual filtering, we made a GDF<http://guess.wikispot.org/The_GUESS_.gdf_format>file of row data (download it<http://gephi.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/ipr-semantic-graphe.gdf> and feel free to make your own viz !), spatialized the graph in Gephi with a *force-vector algorithm <http://iv.slis.indiana.edu/lm/lm-networks.html>* (in a nutshell, two nodes tied by an edge are graphically attracted to each other, otherwise they are rejected), applied some *filters* to colorize the nodes regarding to which semantic cluster they belong to, and then *export* the maps inSVG<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SVG> format. The second part of the work consisted in softly improving the rendering and adding contextual informations like names of clusters, main terms clouds, legend…in Inkscape <http://www.inkscape.org/>, to finally build the PDF files. *Download the general map in PDF (50Mo)*<http://web-mining.fr/files/droit_auteur/carto_droit_auteur_generale.pdf> – Creative Commons by-nc-sa *Download the map of the contract rights in PDF (50Mo)*<http://web-mining.fr/files/droit_auteur/carto_droit_des_contrats.pdf> – Creative Commons by-nc-sa *Download the GDF file (graph not spatialized)<http://gephi.org/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/ipr-semantic-graphe.gdf> * (a shift in nodes positioning is normal) <http://gephi.org/wp-content/uploads/HLIC/799247b93c03cee9b8be3dcd78a8f7bf.p…> Main semantic graph <http://gephi.org/wp-content/uploads/HLIC/49a5e4b1a1e3e095df8e631f93a22ef8.p…> Zoom on the Free Software cluster <http://gephi.org/wp-content/uploads/HLIC/eda7e769d20e4f909355cd485229dd88.p…> Contract rights map <http://gephi.org/wp-content/uploads/HLIC/d80ebcce8fbc601b374af71e2a39788e.p…> Zoom on the core of contract rights Intellectual (red) vs industrial (blue) rights

Fwd: Sign on letter out, next steps for across the spectrum anti-war effort
by Kevin Carson 06 Jul '11

06 Jul '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Kevin Zeese <kbzeese(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Jul 6, 2011 at 12:17 PM Subject: Sign on letter out, next steps for across the spectrum anti-war effort To: Kevin Zeese <kbzeese(a)gmail.com> Thank you for signing on to the letter to Obama and Congress calling for an end to U.S. militarism. We sent the letter out yesterday through our own media networks and through PR Newswire. The latter provides a report that shows 110 media outlets published the press release. We also sent the release out to press contacts and Fitzgibbon Media also sent it out. Today, we are beginning the process of spreading the word through the grassroots. We hope you will help with that as for this to be effective it needs to be more than a letter. It needs to become a movement. We need to get people educated, organized and mobilized to advocate to an end to U.S. militarism and empire. Please share this link, http://comehomeamerica.wordpress.com/dear-president-obama, with your lists, friends and allies and urge them to join us. They can sign up from that page. We are challenging a deeply embedded military industrial complex, perhaps the largest and most powerful empire in world history. It is going to take educating, organizing and mobilizing all Americans who oppose U.S. militarism to mount an effective challenge. Recent actions in Congress show a right-left anti-war effort can be successful. The House has already voted against the Libyan War. The Senate could not muster majority support for the Libyan War, so the leadership did not allow a vote. In both these cases, it is the right and left coming against the leadership of both parties. This shows the potential of our movement to impact Congress in ways that we have not seen since before World War II. I had an article about the letter published in antiwar.com, FireDogLake.com, OpEdNews, WarIsACrime.org and other outlets today, see http://original.antiwar.com/kevin-zeese/2011/07/05/is-a-broader-peace-movem…. Justin Raimondo also had an article published on antiwar.com that linked neocon Max Boot's ramblings with our effort to create a broad-based anti-war movement, http://original.antiwar.com/justin/2011/07/05/against-nation-building/. Last night, Adam Kokesh, an Iraq War vet who signed the letter had me on his RT America television show to discuss the letter, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI93-uczpw4&feature=player_embedded. And, I just finished an interview with Scott Horton on http://antiwar.com/radio/. Please feel free to forward these links or republish them (I can send you a word document of my article with the HTML links included if you want to republish it). Whenever you promote this effort, always link to the letter so people can sign up and get involved, http://comehomeamerica.wordpress.com/dear-president-obama, I also hope you will take action to promote this on your own. We would love for you to write about this new across-the-spectrum movement for any publications ro websites that you can write for. Each of you bring a different perspective to this effort and your view will each resonate with different people. We need more than your signature, we need your voices. If you send us a link we will republish it on Come Home America's website as well. Finally, we have a small group that meets weekly by conference call to plan next steps for Come Home America. If you are interested in getting involved at that level please let me know. We are also starting a town hall forum series around the country. If you want to help organize a forum in your community contact me about that as well. Thank you for signing on to the letter. It is a great first step toward a movement that can represent all Americans who oppose war and actually prevent future wars, as well as end current ones.
