hi Franz, thanks for the alert! ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Franz Nahrada <f.nahrada(a)reflex.at> Date: Fri, Nov 4, 2011 at 8:14 PM Subject: Fwd: VB: Eu-Spri-Conference June 12th/13th 2012 To: michel(a)p2pfoundation.net, Silke.Helfrich(a)gmx.de ** ** This is another opportunity to present partner state and commons concept. but seems a bit academically biased. maybe opportunities for our young fellows.... any contact to the organizers? Franz *----- Original Message -----* Eu-SPRI Conference 2012: Call for Abstracts “Towards Transformative Governance? Responses to mission-oriented innovation policy paradigms” 12/13 June 2012 in Karlsruhe, Germany Submission deadline: 31 January 2012 Notification of acceptance: 15 March 2012 Registration: starting in January 2012 Conference website with full call text (downloadable as a PDF): www.eu-spri-conference-2012.org The Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI is organizing the 2nd biennial conference of the Eu-SPRI Forum ( http://www.euspri-forum.eu/) Fraunhofer ISI is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2012 and the conference will be a major part of the anniversary celebrations. The conference will offer a keynote speech, parallel thematic sessions, an Elevator Pitch Contest for young researchers, a roundtable discussion, the ISI anniversary dinner at Karlsruhe Palace (Schloss) and many opportunities for informal exchange. Call for Abstracts The Lund Declaration, which was handed to the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union by 400 prominent researchers and politicians in 2009, states that "European research must focus on the Grand Challenges of our time moving beyond current rigid thematic approaches. This calls for a new deal among European institutions and Member States, in which European and national instruments are well aligned and cooperation builds on transparency and trust." The declaration thus asks EU institutions to play a crucial role in bringing the relevant public and private actors together, and helping to build more cooperation and trust in order to address the overarching policy objectives. This declaration has taken up and reinforced a development in the past few years in which governments and the European Union have adopted a new strategic rhetoric for their research and innovation policy priorities which addresses the major societal challenges of our time. This is evolving into the third major policy rationale besides economic growth and competitiveness. It is not yet clear whether and how any transformative effects from this new mission-oriented approach can already be identified. The conference aims to attract papers that discuss possible transformative effects at different levels, i.e. on the actors performing research, innovation processes, scientific fields and technological sectors, the institutional funding and research landscape, society, the demand and user/beneficiary side, research and innovation policy and financing, and national and European political framework conditions. It also invites contributions that critically discuss methodological issues, conceptual developments and novel normative challenges around innovation and R&D policy triggered by the – alleged – mission oriented turn. This conference will bring together leading and up and coming researchers across a range of social science disciplines and provide an open forum to promote the emerging academic discussion about new developments in research and innovation policy and their effects on knowledge production, innovation and grand challenges at different levels. The conference welcomes papers from a range of disciplinary backgrounds and traditions, including policy studies, political science, sociology, science and technology studies, public administration, the economics of science and innovation, research management, entrepreneurship, technology assessment and evaluation studies. The organizers encourage contributions that conceptually and/or empirically advance the topic. Specific Themes 1. New patterns, drivers and models of innovation 2. Policy instruments and their coordination 3. Governance of transformative change 4. New methods of policy analysis Deadline and Requirements Please *submit your extended abstracts* by January 31st, 2012. It should include your name(s), affiliation(s) with full contact details, up to five keywords and the sub-theme it is related to. The extended abstract should have 1,000-1,500 words and clearly refer in its structure to (1) the motivation, (2) approach, (3) (expected) results, and (4) conclusion and/or (policy) implications of the work. Please submit your document in DOC/DOCX format. >From among the conference presentations, a selected number will be invited to publish full papers afterwards in a journal special issue or conference book. Notification of accepted presentations will be sent out by March 15th, 2012. Elevator Pitch Contest for young Researchers Doctoral students and young researchers are invited to submit proposals for an Elevator Pitch Contest. An 'elevator pitch' is a short speech used to quickly and simply engage your audience for your research idea. It reflects the idea that it should not take longer than an elevator ride to deliver a convincing summary of your project (planned or in progress). At the conference, you will have exactly 60 seconds for your pitch, and there will be an audience prize for the winner of the contest. *Applicants for the Elevator Pitch* *Contest* will please submit their ideas by January 31st, 2012. Please submit a short abstract of not more than 200 words of the idea together with your name, affiliation and contact details, and give an additional description of the context of the research project or idea. Please submit also a short bio and indicate which media (PPT, audio, video, … ) you would like to use for your elevator pitch, if at all. Notification of accepted elevator pitches will be sent out by March 15th, 2012. Abstract Submission and Registration Please send your abstracts for presentations and proposals for the elevator pitch to the organizers at contact(a)eu-spri-conference-2012.org. Registration for the conference (as presenter and as participant) will be open from early 2012. Please visit the conference homepage at www.eu-spri-conference-2012.org for more information. Here you will also find travel and hotel information. Conference Fees The fee for the conference is € 150. This includes the delegate pack, and refreshments and meals throughout the event, including the dinner event at Karlsruhe Palace (Schloss). The reduced rate for participants from Eu-SPRI Forum member institutions and for students is € 100 (student ID is necessary). Fwd: "Why do your earnings never rise?"
by Michel Bauwens 06 Nov '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Fri, Nov 4, 2011 at 8:27 PM Subject: "Why do your earnings never rise?" To: econowmix(a)googlegroups.com Why do your earnings never rise?<http://gco2e.blogspot.com/2010/12/why-do-your-earnings-never-rise.html> http://gco2e.blogspot.com/2010/12/why-do-your-earnings-never-rise.html Because banks, landowners and monopoly corporations are grabbing them. Taking them as unearned incomes, nominally economic rents, having done no work at all. Daylight robbery. Perfectly legal. Happy about that? <http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KJl8cYMh6bk/Te1A01fgMMI/AAAAAAAAA40/uuqkMlBzKes/s…> More Sources: Who is Getting Your Earnings - Useful sources.<http://gco2e.blogspot.com/2011/06/who-is-getting-your-earnings-useful.html> The graph shows that production of wealth has grown 20 times, in real terms, over the past 100 years. We are not running out of anything. Ignore Malthus and questions of population. It describes a pretty incredible economic law of nature, the Law of Rent<http://markwadsworth.blogspot.com/2010/07/ricardos-law-of-rent-in-action.ht…>. The more we can produce, the more location values rise, the more is distributed to rent. In proportion to what goes to wages. In itself this is a good thing and indicates a society in social and economic advance... There is a caveat: This only works out well and sustainably for all of society when under free conditions. This is not a problem if the rents are used for public revenue to benefit the entire community who actually added that value. And it remains no problem if work, savings and consumption are not taxed, as if these things were injuring society. But the primary social organisation across the civilised world today, supported fully by the laws we vote for, essentially the foundation of modern western democracy, allows these economic rents to be collected privately. *Private property in land* Let the problems start. The natural source of public revenue is lost. Your work, skill, industry and thrift must be taxed to pay for government. Production of wealth is treated as though it is a major problem. Its distribution is ignored. The economic tendency is then to produce less goods and services, with more waste and effort. Workers and producers compete with each other for minimum wages and return on investment. Some drop into involuntary welfare. Others remain involuntarily employed as virtual slaves and no time for things like family and play. Does anyone benefit? Yes! Owners of valuable locations and all the smaller monopolies. All the gain in production goes to the non producer. The producers being left with just enough to survive. Is that fair? Private recipients of this huge unearned benefit walk away scott free. Now that is what I call a real benefits scrounger! The enigmatic wealth divide explained fully for the first time. To mitigate this injustice, government has no choice but to tax your work increasingly to pay for ever more poverty, vice and misery caused by this legalised robbery, in rebellion preventing welfare, benefits and tax breaks. It also explains how monopoly power accumulates vast capital stocks with great ease. Corporate monopolies use these economic rents to purchase capital with far greater ease than the genuine producers, workers and entrepreneurs. Things get ever the easier once you are on the economic rent asset ladder. There is nothing special about corporate executives and their high pay. They skim off the top of these rents. They are experts at acquiring high location value assets for the company. They get paid accordingly. Rightly or wrongly. I am only pointing out what is there. Who is the biggest robber today? Banks. Almost 100% of their profits are in the end economic rents from interest on loans for high value locations. They do relatively little work, add nothing much to the common stock of wealth, receive the highest pay, face no real cuts, take no risks as these assets are the only assets that always rise in value and even when they do not banks get bailed out by the tax payer. Most galling is today, they have so much power, they can tell our timid yet democratically elected government what to do... for them. Who has the real power? The ones we elect or someone else? In the olden days Bankers would have been beheaded. Who's fault is that today in this "democracy"? Ours. The people. We keep electing governments that allow it all to carry on. There is a very simple remedy. Vote for Real Reform<http://gco2e.blogspot.com/2011/06/real-reform-what-is-it.html> . Doing nothing is to continue protecting these unearned incomes. Taxing your work and enterprise is protectionism for the worlds primary social organisation: Private Property in Land. The Great Social Wrong. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: The world is riveting toward a possible turning point and we hope that you are able to stand with us in this call to action

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Kamran Mofid <k.mofid(a)gcgi.info> Date: Sun, Nov 6, 2011 at 12:44 AM Subject: The world is riveting toward a possible turning point and we hope that you are able to stand with us in this call to action To: Kamran Mofid <k.mofid(a)gcgi.info> Dear friends and colleagues, *The world is riveting toward a possible turning point and we hope that you are able to stand with us in this call to action.* We, the undersigned, have co-authored the document noted below. We are now writing to seek your endorsement. Please if you wish to support our statement and are willing to stand in solidarity with us, then, by return of this email, add your name and affiliation to the signatories. As the current global crises have clearly shown, the whole world is waking up to the value of co-creation and harnessing of knowledge from diverse sources, disciplines, experience and expertise. We plan to publicise this document widely and forward it to many relevant national and international agencies and bodies tasked with formulating new policies for a new type of world economy. In anticipation of your support and endorsement, please kindly return your email to: Kamran Mofid at k.mofid(a)gcgi.info *Kamran Mofid PhD (ECON), *Founder, Globalisation for the Common Good Initiative (UK) * * *Jamshid Damooei PhD (ECON), **Co-director, Centre for Leadership and Values, **School of Management**, **California** Lutheran University, **USA* ** * * *Steve Szeghi PhD (ECON), *Dept of Economics, Wilmington College, Ohio, USA* * * * *The World Is Revolting Against the **US** Economic and Business Model: A Call to Action* Hundreds of thousands of people, young and old, employed and unemployed, black and white, men and women, have come together in a continuing and lasting global unity, partaking in a dialogue of civilisations and peoples in consideration for the common good. This global movement has risen in a thousand cities, in 82 countries on six continents, from Zuccotti Park in New York to Oakland, California; Wall Street to St. Paul’s in London; Frankfurt to Madrid, Rome to Athens, Chicago to Sydney and more, rejecting neo-liberalism as depicted in the US’s economics and business model, demanding a better, kinder and more humane world. The crises of ecological devastation and glaring social and economic inequality are pushing the planet to the brink of catastrophe. Perhaps this revolt against the US Economic and Business model is occurring just in the nick of time. Given the context of the times, we invite you to reflect on the two very important points highlighted below: 1- On October 13th 2011, The Economist in its ninth ranking of international MBA Programmes, ranks the world’s top 30 programmes, and identifies the top 20 to be from the US. Source: http://www.economist.com/node/21532270 2- The first Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded in 1969. Between that year and 2011, 42 Nobel Prizes in Economics have been awarded. Out of these prizes 26 have been awarded outright to US citizens (62%) and a further 9 have been awarded to US citizens jointly with other nationalities. Source: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/416856/Nobel-Prize/273432/Economi… *At this point the pertinent Question is*: if 20 of the 30 top MBAs and Business Schools are in the US, and 62% of the Nobel Laureates in Economics have been awarded to US Citizens then why is it that the US business, economic, social, environmental, healthcare, education, banking and finance, politics and international relations, Wall Street,..., and much more are all so discredited? Why is it that the policies, thoughts, and values that shape and guide the US economic system and Business school model are so unable to explain either the scope or severity of the crises we face, so ill-equipped, out of touch with, and unable to explain the revolt which is permeating the globe? In our judgement, Business Schools, MBAs, and top Economics programmes have failed in three distinct ways. They have failed to adequately address questions of values, ethics, social customs, traditions, and spiritual dimensions and their role in under girding a healthy economic system. They have failed to inculcate in students a sufficient appreciation of market failure in the cases of a lack of competition, asymmetrical knowledge, public goods, and externalities. Finally they have failed to adequately instil in students the understanding that even when markets are efficient, that they will likely lack social and ecological justice and that these extra-efficiency standards are worthy social goals. We need to question the functionality of the existing economic system that has created a massive and widening gap between a few super rich and the many in abject poverty. We need to examine the soundness of extracting growing profit from a highly leveraged and unsustainable real sector in the face of massive numbers of disenfranchised people who are deprived of a potentially prosperous economic life. We need to question the ability of mother earth to support the extravagance of our blind and ignorant consumerism. We also need to put self interest in perspective, and balance it with concern for the common good and for other species and the earth. We should recall the wisdom of Adam Smith, “father of modern economics”, who was a great moral philosopher first and foremost. In 1759, sixteen years before his famous *Wealth of Nations*, he published *The Theory of Moral Sentiments*, which explored the self-interested nature of man and his ability nevertheless to make moral decisions based on factors other than selfishness. In The Wealth of Nations, Smith laid the early groundwork for economic analysis, but he embedded it in a broader discussion of social justice and the role of government. Today we mainly know only of his analogy of the ‘invisible hand’ and refer to him as defending free markets; whilst ignoring his insight that the pursuit of wealth should not take precedence over social and moral obligations, and his belief that a ‘Divine Being’ gives us ‘the greatest quantity of happiness’. We are taught that the free market as a ‘way of life’ appealed to Adam Smith but not that he thought the morality of the market could not be a substitute for the morality for society at large. He neither envisioned nor prescribed a capitalist society, but rather a ‘capitalist economy within society, a society held together by communities of non-capitalist and non-market morality’. As it has been noted, morality for Smith included neighbourly love, an obligation to practice justice, a norm of financial support for the government ‘in proportion to [one’s] revenue’, and a tendency in human nature to derive pleasure from the good fortune and happiness of other people. Building a new economics system will demand challenging and novel ways of thinking, perspectives that encompass the broad swath of human experience and wisdom, from the natural sciences and all the social sciences, to the philosophical and spiritual values of the world’s major religions and of indigenous peoples as well. The task before us is a daunting one, and wisdom in how to proceed will come from a multiple of sources, and must embrace the panorama of cultural and disciplinary perspectives. Practical steps are of the essence and we therefore propose some for you to consider. We also ask for your suggestions in expanding this list of practical steps, so that we can begin a dialogue on where we go from here in building a better world for ourselves and for future generations. *A few practical steps* 1, a guaranteed income or meaningful job to all by society 2, a tax on financial transactions 3, access by the poor to credit markets 4, reigning in executive pay in financial firms 5, taxing capital gains and dividends at the same rate as wages and salaries 6, elimination of too big to fail 7, massive use of usury free lending to provide basic human needs, and expand the quality of human life in ways that are environmentally friendly 8, a resurgence of financial regulations to reduce moral hazard, adverse selection, and to improve the flow of information to consumers 9, a serious global commitment to dramatically reduce carbon emissions, preserve habitat for endangered species, and to price goods and services with environmental costs in mind 10, an increase in funds for education at all levels, with education as a right 11, the grounding of Business and Economics education in social, moral, and ethical values and principles 12, a dramatic reduction in global military budgets and a significant reduction in the U.S. military presence throughout the world 13, creation of an International Fund for Peace, recognizing approximate words of Pope Paul the Sixth, ‘that without Justice there can be no Peace,’ that true peace must spring from the access of all to the means of life and the ability to be fully functioning members of the global community 14, the strengthening of multilateral global institutions and structures, the development of new ones, and the gradual elimination of the right of veto by major countries at the UN We call upon you to support this "Call to Action" by adding your name, affiliation and the country of residence, and any suggestions for additional practical steps to the end of this message and send it back to Kamran Mofid. Please forward this message to your friends and network. We suspect that you are as concerned as we are with these alarming trends in environmental destruction and growing inequality yet are finding encouragement in the chorus of voices rising against the existing financial and economic system. Financial Transaction Tax ? - G20

Transaction tax as tool for further concentration of non-democratic power and a global government ? /// http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Financial_transaction_tax Euronews : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EN5qHH68IvU Sarkozy : He said France, Germany and other countries supported the idea of a financial transaction tax - and France would fight to make it reality. Then they play "poker" with it. Collecting the gambling chips to feed them back via economic rents will be * completely* ineffective at best, at least from a systemic level! The Financial Transactions Tax has found wide acceptance, from the European leaders, the Vatican with their call for a world sovereign bank, and mainstream media. This alone should ring alarm bells among reformers. The reason for the support from the ruling elite is that it strengthens their political and economic interests due to its fundamental mis-design. http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=27322 *"Ultimately, any Robin Hood Tax will most likely end up in a giant fund to “ensure that banks are adequately capitalized”, and one which will be used to bailout, or insure big bank losses and trillions in gambling derivative bets gone bad.* In reality, a *Robin Hood Tax* does just the opposite of what its name represents. Rather than stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, it is designed to steal more money through taxation from working people" ... "should first be asking if any government can be trusted to spend their tax revenue responsibly" On Sat, Nov 5, 2011 at 4:00 PM, natalie wrote: > > http://nationalmemo.com/article/financial-transaction-tax-nurses-union-defi… > > _______________________________________________ > P2P Foundation - Mailing list > http://www.p2pfoundation.net > https://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation > >

Look at: http://www.goteo.org/about?lang=en. Crowdfunding the commons!
