http://blog.p2pfoundation.net/how-the-privatization-of-the-public-sphere-cr… hi sepp, could you look into this suggestion? Michel 1. jim costanzo <http://aaronburrsociety.org/> Says: November 8th, 2011 at 2:51 am<http://blog.p2pfoundation.net/how-the-privatization-of-the-public-sphere-cr…> e<http://blog.p2pfoundation.net/wp-admin/comment.php?action=editcomment&c=486…> This posting addresses important core issues so I would like to draw attention to another threat to our commons, as well as, our per to per practices. The Internet has become as vital as water and air to our physical persons. It is something that is ubiquitous while often being taken for granted. Today the Internet is our basic form of communication, our quickest access to free speech and in some ways the quintessential universal commons. In addition to the Aaron Burr Society’s history and our involvement with OWS, we have been working with our friend Paul Garrin who has been working to keep access to the Internet as part of the commons. In 1996 Paul wrote “This race toward ‘privatization’ is taking place behind closed doors and in corporate boardrooms, well outside the sphere of public debate, and threatens the very existence of free speech over electronic networks.” http://wwww.next5minutes.org/artikel.jsp;jsessionid=D31A1BAB0F0209593DD5C49… Paul is an artist & cultural producer who in 1996 started Name.Space to register top-level domain names. In 2003 he started WIFINY to provide broadband Internet access as an alternative portal and to provide access to underserved communities. Both companies are based on the Social Enterprise model. This means that serving the common good is built into the business model. One of the important goals for each company is to empower local communities by providing the digital tools that can be used to create sustainable, self-sufficiency. Both of these companies are currently working to both expand and protect access to the Internet. One of the more interesting developments will involve next year’s applications for top-level domain names. For more information go to the websites listed below. http://about.namespace.org/about/ https://wifiny.net/ In the spirit of full disclosure, Paul is a charter member of the Aaron Burr Society and he has been my Internet provider since the last century. And, as previously stated, I have been working with Paul on these endeavors. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: Creating MetaCurrency Together: Thank you and Next Steps
by Michel Bauwens 08 Nov '11

08 Nov '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Lauren Higgins <lauren(a)laurenhiggins.com> Date: Tue, Nov 8, 2011 at 3:48 AM Subject: Creating MetaCurrency Together: Thank you and Next Steps Dear MetaCurrency Collabathoners, First, a BIG thank you to everyone who participated in the MetaCurrency Collabathon. The event exceeded all of our expectations and we have your participation, enthusiasm and genius to thank for that!! Progress is being made since the Collbathon, so we wanted to take this time to *1)* Re-connect all of you through this initial email *2)* Give you an update on some current "next steps" and, most importantly, *3)* Invite your deeper participation and feedback. *Tech Team Updates:* For those who are interested in continued development of the MetaCurrency Tech tools, please contact Eric directly directly for coming up to speed and dev sessions, etc. He has had a few sessions with with folks from the Collabathon already . Send him a shout-out and dive into the code! "Eric Harris-Braun" <eric(a)harris-braun.com>, - *Participation:* - The code is on github at https://github.com/zippy/anansi and all issue tracking is happening on the tracker there: https://github.com/zippy/anansi/issues - For coders Eric also monitors the #metacurrency channel on IRC @ freenode. There hasn't been any activity there in a long while but that will soon change and Eric would love for that to be an active channel. - *Next Steps:* - Jumping into streamscapes coding - Writing documentation on what's already there. *Team Updates for **MetaCurrency Awareness, Edu, and Communication:* This is refining the messaging, philosophy, and understanding of the MetaCurrency project by working on communications and further developing a platform for participation and educational opportunities that come from the project. Angela Reininger has already begun to distill the information from the MetaCurrency site, the New Currency Frontier Blogs and Collabathon sessions to formulate a set of principles that will help to communicate the guiding framework of MetaCurrency. Alex Au and Lauren have been meeting to further refine a strategy or "Interaction Funnel" for how people travel from awareness of the project, into participation in the project through the embodiment of the MetaCurrency framework and tools into their daily lives. - *Participation:* - Lauren will be setting up 3 work sessions on these topics. If you would like to participate contact Lauren (lauren(a)laurenhiggins.com) - If you are interested in developing any part of the conciousness tools, these early communication processes or something that has *not* been named here, please add this to the pool! This could be anything from writing about MetaCurrency, working on the Kickstarter, helping update the website, or helping us finds ways to make the project more sharable with the world. Everything counts! - So far, we have started a MetaCurrency google doc folder where we can share notes and collaborate on documents together. Contact Lauren if you would like to be added. Soon we should have some kind of google group, facebook group, etc where we can "be" working and sharing together. - Please feel free to organize your own session as well. All of this can develop in tandem! - *Next Steps * - Setting up work sessions to continue developing the following: - Distill MetaCurrency principles, continue to refine clear definitions of the problems from a technical perspective and gather writing about the technology breakthroughs that have occurred - Develop the "Interaction Funnel" of how people approach, embody and participate in MetaCurrency. - Begin to re-design/ update the web-site content and communication that follows these changes. - The MetaCurrency Kickstarter *A Collaboration Space for MetaCurrency: * In the coming week we hope to establish a few spaces where we as a group can continue to "be" with each other online, share information, and keep up-to-date with the momentum of development for the project. The following have been proposed: - Skype Chanel (s) - Pivitol Tracker - Google group - Facebook Group - Brainpark We may want 1 space for the entire group and then allow the tech and other individual project teams to create the channels that work best for them. We will work with Arthur in the coming we to chose something basic to start with to keep us connected. If you have any ideas or preferences please share them. *Future: What does MetaCurrency inspire in you? * If you see next steps that were not outlined here please add them to the thread and take ownership of their future. We would love to hear any feedback you have about the Collabathon or your ongoing participation. It's only the beginning. :) *Future Forward,* *Lauren Higgins and Mickki Langston* * * * * *P.S. *Please add anyone who was not included in this original email if you see them missing. Thank you! -- Lauren Higgins* *Organizer of All Things and Possibilities Cartographer* **The MetaCurrency Project *metacurrency.org * *Director* *Yes, *AND...?* Program, Communikey Festival 2011 http://communikey.us/festival2011/ <http://www.communikey.us/festival/> -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: CommonSource Monthly Update - October 2011
by Michel Bauwens 08 Nov '11

08 Nov '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Neal Gorenflo <neal(a)shareable.net> Date: Tue, Nov 8, 2011 at 7:39 AM Subject: CommonSource Monthly Update - October 2011 To: Dear Stakeholders, October is our 2nd anniversary of our launch. It's only appropriate that this month we reached more people than ever - by a pretty big margin. Here's more on an exciting month: -ShareNY <http://www.shareable.net/blog/announcing-share-new-york> on 11/19 & 20 is about 20 tickets away from selling out. Milicent has been on the ground in New York the last two weeks putting the finishing touches on the event and organizing tirelessly. Please share this event with your New York friends. -We're going to SXSW again! Our panel<http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/ideas/view/9260>on the sharing economy was one of 600 selected from a field of over 3,200 entries. -Paul Davis produced an entire series on crowdfunding then packaged it up as an e-book for Kindle and iPad, a first for Shareable. Check out Crowdfunding Nation for Kindle here<http://shareable.net/blog/crowdfunding-nation-now-available-as-kindle-ebooks>. Still waiting for approval for the Apple store. -We continued our series on Policies for a Shareable City<http://shareable.net/blog/policies-for-a-shareable-city> with partner the Sustainable Economies Law Center, which is reaching a relatively small but influential audience of urbanists. I was interviewed about the series on Awakening Value Radio. We have about 13 more posts to go in a 20-part series. -We increased our coverage of Occupy Wall Street. That's been driving a lot of new visits to Shareable. There's probably more we can do to introduce this movement to the solutions we write about. Any suggestions? -I organized a panel at the Institute of the Future about peer production featuring Shareable editorial advisor Michel Bauwens of the P2P Foundation. It was well attended, and our relationship with both organization continues to grow. -We continue to get coverage from many interesting places, including the inaugural issue of Trash Magazine in Finland, an impressive magazine for optimists and designers. This adds to increasing pick up of our content by CommonDreams and Huffington Post, which is helping us reach a huge number of new readers. TOP STORIES -3D Printing to Community to Crowdsource Saving a Species -10 Projects to Liberate the Web -Microtouch: An Open Source, DIY eBook Reader and Mobile Device -Architectural Myopia: Designing for Industry, Not People -The Next Net -Libraries Become Centers for Sharing -Libraries Are Doing More With Less -Crowdfunding Nation SITE STATS: We had a record month in October due to our series on libraries, crowdfunding, and Policies for Shareable Cities. Plus, we got lucky with a couple pickups by Slashdot. I doubt we'll match this in November, but I expect to upward trend to continue over the long term. Unique visitors: 75,798, up 90% Pageviews: 142,568, up 48% Average time on site: 2:10 minutes, down 15% Facebook members: 13,343, up around 3% Twitter members: 7,441, up around 5% Alexa rank: 52,382, improved by about 5K places Happy 2nd Anniversary everyone! Thanks for helping to move sharing and commons into the mainstream - it's a matter of survival that we do this work. We have an amazing opportunity for service. And I'm grateful to be on this journey with you. Please reach out with any questions or suggestions. Thanks again, -Neal -- Neal Gorenflo | Publisher, Shareable <http://shareable.net/> | @ShareableDesign <http://twitter.com/#%21/ShareableDesign> | 415.867.0429 You're invited to ShareNY <http://bit.ly/qZhOkO>, November 19th & 20th. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens
