Fwd: Call for Essays and other Works | Rising Earth Consciousness
by Michel Bauwens 16 Jan '19

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Kosmos Journal <info(a)kosmosjournal.org> Date: Tue, Jan 15, 2019 at 2:00 PM Subject: Call for Essays and other Works | Rising Earth Consciousness To: michel <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Click here <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> to read this newsletter on our website. [image: Kosmos Community Newsletter] Call for Essays and other Works | Rising Earth Consciousness January 15th, 2019 [image: EarthNewConsciousness.jpg] Dear Reader, *World Interfaith Harmony Week* is coming up. It’s a reminder that, in many ways, the world’s spiritual traditions may be our greatest hope for realizing our essential unity and healing our planet. Yes, I realize that ‘religion’ has often been used to divide us, and that religious extremism is to blame for numerous atrocities. But that kind of gross corruption should not be confused in any way with the spirituality of goodwill that the great majority of humanity embraces. We have far more in common – our feelings of deep connection toward each other and with the universe – than that which divides us. Spiritual institutions, congregations, foundations and coalitions have vast organizational and physical infrastructure worldwide that can be activated for common purpose – to uphold human rights and promote social justice, for example – and to perform community service and Earthwork at the hyper-local level. This is why we at *Kosmos* feel it is so important to practice with a spiritual community, be it religious, secular, indigenous, or other cooperative way. Learn more about *World Interfaith Harmony Week* below, and contemplate how the combined energy of goodwill can manifest the preferred futures our hearts so ardently long for. Kosmos Quarterly Call for Essays and Other Works | Rising Earth Consciousness Our *Kosmos Quarterly* Spring theme is focused on Earth and her wonders, with a deep awareness of the harm human activity is causing. How will the next chapter of our human story unfold, and how do our practices and personal relationships with the *living Earth* help guide that future? Could an elevated collective consciousness literally save our Home? While there is a growing consciousness *about* the Earth, some suggest the Earth is also increasingly *aware of us* and communicating her pain. Animals, plants and minerals are members of the planetary family, in distress. What are the *rights of Nature, *and how do we cope with our grief, fear and anger about species loss, ecosystem destruction, and climate change? We invite you to submit an essay up to 1000 words, a poem, or other artwork, in response to any of these prompts or what *Rising Earth Consciousness* means to you. We will choose several works to publish in our *Quarterly* and on our website. *Deadline: February 15, 2019 | Use our Submission Form <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> for written works. In the speech King Abdullah said: *“The fact is, humanity everywhere is bound together, not only by mutual interests, but by shared commandments to love God and neighbour; to love the good and neighbour. …What we are proposing is a special week, during which the world’s people, in their own places of worship, could express the teachings of their own faith about tolerance, respect for the other and peace.” * The *World Interfaith Harmony Week* provides a platform—the first week of February—when all interfaith groups and other groups of goodwill can show the world what a powerful movement they are. *Plan Your Event. You Might Win a Prize!* The Royal Aal Al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought in Jordan established the *World Interfaith Harmony Week* Prize <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> in 2013 to recognize the three events which best promote the goals of *World Interfaith Harmony Week*. Prizes are awarded to each event that is judged to have been most successful in promoting interfaith harmony and impacting religious understanding. To enter the prize: - the event must be held between the given dates (usually the last weekend of January and the first weekend of March) - the Event submitted on the WIHW website (see HERE <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> ) - an Event Report submitted (see HERE <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> for last year’s Reports and HERE <https://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> for what they should contain) If this is your first *WIHW,* it is suggested that you gather with fellow lovers of harmony nearby and plan just one simple event. Fwd: Workshop on global digital justice
by Michel Bauwens 16 Jan '19

16 Jan '19

---------- Forwarded message --------- From: parminder <parminder(a)itforchange.net> Date: Tue, Jan 15, 2019 at 6:34 PM Subject: Workshop on global digital justice To: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net>, ΕΙΡΗΝΗ ΠΡΙΑΒΟΛΟΥ < e.priavolou(a)gmail.com> Michel, pl do share the below outreach email in p2p groups that you are a part of.. thanks, parminder Dear All Wishing you a great 2019! Just Net Coalition <https://justnetcoalition.org/> plans a meeting between March 25th to 27th in Bangkok as a strategic get together of groups interested in issues of equity and social justice in the digital era. The plan is to shape and take forward a global digital justice agenda, working together as a network. This is also meant to further develop and strengthen the Just Net Coalition . The workshop is titled* "Equity and Social Justice in a Digital World: An Inter Sectoral/ Movements Dialogue for a Digital Justice Agenda". * Participants will come from (1) organisations that are already engaged with digital issues and (2) traditional civil society groups that have begun to feel the digital impact and pressure on their work, and would like to understand the digital better, from a progressive point of view, and collaborate in developing a global digital justice agenda. With a digital justice agenda we mean working equally on civil and political rights side as on social, economic and cultural rights. A datafied state is a major threat, but so is data discrimination by the private sector and a big corporation driven data economy that further concentrates wealth and power, within and across societies. Social and economic justice is a key part of this effort, which need to be brought to the centre stage of digital activism. This is also attempt to built bridges between digital activism in the geo-political South and North. Participants will mainly be groups that are already engaged in or with the Just Net Coalition in various ways. But we are eager to also include groups and people that we may not yet be in contact or engaged with, but who are eager to work on social and economic justice issues in a digital context. Such a commitment should be central to such groups/ people's work for them to fruitfully work with JNC and its various partners. This email is an outreach to such groups/ people who may want to engage with us with regard to this initiative of Just Net Coalition, and possibly work with us on these important issues. The accent is to work primarily with organisations because the effort is to develop a strong and sustainable civil society constituency in this area. However, we are open to also dialogue with committed individuals with demonstrated work in these areas. As mentioned, this is a strategic get together, and invitation to the meeting is selective, as per various mentioned criteria. But please do not at all hesitate to ping us , ask questions or clarifications. We need a lots of us to work together for social justice in the digital age. We would normally expect any additional participant to be able to self-fund, but in a few select cases we may be able to offer funding support. Since the meeting is not that far off, if you are going to write to us, please do it asap. If you like it please do send on and tweet it. Putting banking back in the hands of the people: The role of regional cooperative banks in community wealth building If you’re in any way a follower of the ‘new economics’ movement you will probably have heard of the ‘community wealth building’ mantra which is gaining ground as common language. So, what exactly is this new approach to growing local economies? Community wealth building If you’re in any way a follower of the ‘new economics’ movement you will probably have heard of the ‘community wealth building’ mantra which is gaining ground as common language. So, what exactly is this new approach to growing local economies? The Democracy Collaborative <https://democracycollaborative.org/democracycollaborative/local-economies/S…>, where I’m a Next System Project <https://thenextsystem.org/learn/collections/new-systems-possibilities-and-p…> Research Fellow, defines community wealth building as a broad range of models and innovations such as co-ops, community development finance initiatives (CDFIs) and community banks that “aim at improving the ability of communities and individuals to increase asset ownership, anchor jobs locally by broadening ownership over capital, help achieve key environmental goals, expand the provision of public services and ensure local economic stability”. One key way to achieve this is to stop money leaking out of communities by leveraging public procurement and investment through ‘anchor institutions’ like local authorities, universities and hospitals. Another important shift is towards regionalising and localising financial flows and keeping money in communities through initiatives such as local currencies and community banks. While this approach emerged in the US with work by the Democracy Collaborative leading to the pioneering ‘Cleveland model’, which is now inspiring numerous other US cities <https://community-wealth.org/strategies/cw-cities/index.html>, this is now rapidly catching on in the UK. Democracy Collaborative UK Fellow, Matthew Brown, has been leading the way with his work on the ‘Preston model <https://cles.org.uk/tag/the-preston-model/>’ which emerged in 2011, and has led to the city being named the best place to live and work in the North West <https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/nov/08/preston-named-best-city-liv…> and most improved city in the UK <https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/nov/01/preston-named-as-most-most…>. These are encouraging signs for other cash strapped councils looking for a new way of doing things. Preston along with other local authorities such as Bristol, Liverpool and Croydon are now part of the UK Cooperative Councils Innovation Network <https://www.councils.coop/>, a new network which, along with organisations like CLES, Stir to Action, Nef and Co-operatives UK, is spearheading the championing of cooperative values and models in communities across the UK. This movement is allied, and hopefully will link more and more, to other democratizing citizen-led movements such as the Fearless Cities <http://fearlesscities.com/> movement originated by the Barcelona en Comú citizen platform and the emerging peer2peer City as Commons <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/urban-commons-initiatives-in-the-city-of-ghe…> work in places like Ghent. Whilst many of the above are relatively new movements, there is a long and proud tradition of cooperative and community wealth based work in places like the Emilia Romagna Social Economy <https://thenextsystem.org/learning-from-emilia-romagna>, Quebec Social Economy <http://www.resilience.org/stories/2017-04-12/quebec-can-teach-us-creating-e…> and the Mondragon <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mondragon_Corporation> complex. As John Restakis <https://thenextsystem.org/cooperative-commonwealth-partner-state> and Mike Lewis <https://thenextsystem.org/navigating-system-transition-volatile-century> show in their Next System Project essays, in many of these places the majority of public services such as care and education and many products and other services, are delivered neither by the state nor by private capital but instead by citizens, community businesses and civic associations in close partnership with local government. The role of regional community cooperative banks in community wealth building As the investment function in national and local economies is so key and influences the character of the rest of the economy, one crucial player in the institutional landscape of all successful examples of community wealth building is a community bank, which along with other CDFIs, plays an important role in shifting power away from capital, to citizens. For example, the founding of Caja Laboral bank in Spain was key to the emergence and growth of what is now Mondragon, a co-op with $12bn revenues and 75,000 employee owners. An important new player in the community wealth building landscape in the UK, and one which is following in the footsteps of examples across North America like Desjardins <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desjardins_Group> and VanCity and the hundreds of similar enterprises across the EU, is the Community Savings Bank Association (CSBA <http://www.csba.co.uk/>) which is launching 18 regional cooperatively owned banks across the UK. In Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Spain and France a host of community and state-owned banks like the Landesbanks, JAK Bank and agricultural co-operative banks all serve such needs and make up as much as 64% of the banking market. Regional banks have been absent in the UK since the last ones, including the original Trustee Savings Banks, were swallowed up by large clearing banks in the 1980s. Furthermore, there have never been true cooperative banks in the UK - until now. The law was changed <https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2014/14/contents> in 2014 and it is now possible to gain a full deposit taking bank license in the UK as a cooperative. Soon after this change in UK law the Inclusive Growth Commission <https://www.thersa.org/action-and-research/rsa-projects/public-services-and…> of the RSA <https://www.thersa.org/discover/publications-and-articles/rsa-blogs/2017/06…>, chaired by Bloomberg’s Stephanie Flanders <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephanie_Flanders>, recommended the setting up of regional banks as an important way to deliver inclusive growth in the UK. A group of innovators and RSA Fellows have spent the last few years building the concept of ‘community banks in a box’, and the RSA is now working with the CSBA to facilitate the development of a UK wide network of regional community banks. As well as the bank I have helped found in the West of England region, Avon Mutual <http://www.avonmutual.org/>, we have banks already in formation in London <http://www.glmbnk.co.uk/> and the South West <https://southwestmutual.co.uk/> and soon we hope in the Preston, Merseyside and Lancashire region, as well as in Wales where our bank model was a key plank of the newly elected First Ministers manifesto <https://www.mark4leader.wales/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/manifesto-english-…> in which he committed to supporting and investing in starting our bank in Wales in 2019. Community wealth building has also been taken into the heart of Westminster with Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell having launched a Community Wealth Building Unit <https://www.thenews.coop/126193/sector/community/john-mcdonnell-announces-f…>which is increasingly influencing Labour Party policy. The idea of spending locally to support small business and high streets is also high on the agenda of many Conservative councils, particularly in more rural areas and our South West Mutual bank has already had investment from several Conservative Councils <https://themoorlander.co.uk/councils-pledge-100k-for-local-bank/> in Devon. It’s exciting see that there is no party political split on these issues and in the West of England we are likewise finding that our bank model appeals to both Conservative and Labour Councils as well as to Lib Dems, Greens and the Co-operative Party. Our mission is to help redress regional inequalities, build financial inclusion, significantly increase the proportion of bank lending going to the ‘real’ economy and SMEs instead of the financial economy, build economic resilience, and bring about a renaissance of customer service, relationship banking and trust. These banks will be full deposit-taking savings and loan retail and business banks. In that regard we will have the same functionality and feel as normal high street banks with branches, and online and mobile connectivity. But we won’t be trading and involved in the speculative ‘financialized’ economy - just the real economy of our regions. Using local savings to lend to local citizens, businesses and other institutions. Relationship banking will be key to our model’s success - unlike a distant algorithm which usually says ‘no’ our lending officers will be embedded in their communities and their needs. Our banks will serve the everyday financial needs of our member customers - ordinary citizens, local community groups, and small and medium sized companies. We will also work closely with local authorities, universities, housing associations, credit unions, community development corporations, CDFIs, local social investment funds, revolving loan funds and others. And we aim to become a key anchor institution supporting the growth of other community wealth building institutions and focused on promoting sustainable and inclusive prosperity for our region. We have a strong focus on relationship banking, a renaissance of high street branches, small and micro enterprise and banking the unbanked and underbanked citizen, thus significantly impacting the ‘poverty premium <http://www.bristol.ac.uk/geography/research/pfrc/themes/finexc/poverty-prem…>’ associated with not having banking facilities. We aim to rebuild trust in banking and our democratic structure means that every member, not every share, gets a vote. Avon Mutual will provide services to approaching 1000 SME businesses and social businesses in year 1, rising to over 14,000 in year 5, creating and supporting thousands of jobs. We hope to build to 85,000 retail and 18,000 business members by year 10. The social impact of these activities is also enhanced by the fact that these loans are spent into the real and productive economy, creating a local impact multiplier that delivers a further 76% of value to the local economy. All of this will be measured working with best-in-class advisory services and reported regularly to members and society. We will also model the values of community wealth building by being a living wage employer, having a 10:1 pay ratio for staff and having no bonus or sales incentives encouraging cross selling and over-selling. Our democratic structure means every member gets an equal say in how the bank operates, no matter how few or many shares they own. Community wealth building in the West of England As I grew up and am based in the West of England I’m particularly interested in the potential for this region to become an exemplar of the sorts of initiatives mentioned above. In addition to soon having its own regional community owned bank, there is already a huge amount of activity, enthusiasm, energy and networks of trust amongst diverse players which represent solid foundations on which to build. A New Economy Summit <http://bristolgreencapital.org/celebrating-the-future-at-bristols-new-econo…> I helped organise in Bristol two years ago was witness to this energy as there was standing room only, with hundreds of people spending two days exploring the potential of community wealth building in the region. And at a Finance Innovation Lab <https://financeinnovationlab.org/> and Democracy Collaborative day long 2º City Finance Lab event in November 2018, a group of 50 people from the region and around the world got together to explore how the city of Bristol could use innovative finance mechanisms and institutions like Avon Mutual to deliver on our climate change commitments. The region already boasts a host of innovative initiatives such as: Bristol and Bath Regional Capital <https://www.bab-rc.uk/>; Resonance <https://resonance.ltd.uk/> Funds; Bristol Credit Unio <https://www.bristolcreditunion.org/>n; Bath and West Community Energy <http://www.bwce.coop/>; Bristol Energy <https://www.bristol-energy.co.uk/> ; United Communities <https://www.unitedcommunities.org.uk/>; Sustrans <https://www.unitedcommunities.org.uk/>, Soil Association <https://www.soilassociation.org/>; Bristol Pound <https://bristolpound.org/>; Happy City <http://www.happycity.org.uk/>; Bristol Green Capital Partnership <http://bristolgreencapital.org/>; Festival of Ideas <http://www.ideasfestival.co.uk/>; St Johns <https://www.stjohnsbath.org.uk/> and Quartet <https://quartetcf.org.uk/> Foundations; The Matthew Tree Project <https://the-matthew-tree-project.org/>; Knowle West Media Centre <https://kwmc.org.uk/>; Bristol Community Land Trust <http://bristolclt.org.uk/>; Frome’s Flatpack Democracy <https://www.flatpackdemocracy.co.uk/about/>. It’s also a youthful region with leading academic centres such as University of West of England and its Centre for Social Business, Bristol University and its Social Economy Unit, Bath University and its Business School, Bath Spa University and Gloucestershire University. Bristol City’s Mayor is the first elected black Mayor in Europe and is driving forward an exciting vision for inclusive growth. Bath and North East Somerset council has an active approach to community partnership involving support for asset transfer and community energy and in places like Stroud and Gloucestershire there is a strong tradition of community wealth building and ecological awareness. Swindon also has an emerging Swindon Model <https://party.coop/2018/04/26/reimagining-swindons-economy-a-community-weal…> inspired by community wealth building. The West of England region has a combined authority bringing the possibility of coherence across a number of authorities. I’m hopeful that in years to come people will look to our region just as today we admire the innovations in places like Barcelona, Quebec and Emilia Romagna. A transformative era of community wealth building It’s truly exciting times for community wealth building here in the UK as well as in the US and elsewhere across an ever more connected world. More than ten years on from the financial crash of 2008, our revolutionary new community cooperative banks are set to shake up the banking sector and play a pivotal role in the flourishing of community wealth building across the UK. Let’s ensure that we don’t miss this exciting opportunity to transform our communities. Please share this story with friends and join our movement. I find it rather easy to portray a businessman. Being bland, rather cruel and incompetent comes naturally to me. - John Cleese Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake: One of her characters asks, "As a species we're doomed by hope, then?" By hope? Well, yes. Hope drives us to invent new fixes for old messes, which in turn create ever more dangerous messes. Hope elects the politician with the biggest empty promise; and as any stockbroker or lottery seller knows, most of us will take a slim hope over prudent and predictable frugality. The word itself is about a century old, and the meaning has actually been in almost continual flux.* On top of that, there’s debate about whether empathy is a good and useful feeling that can help us move toward a kinder and more just world, or whether it’s actually counterproductive. The word was first used in German as “einfühlung” or in-feeling around the turn of the last century. It was used in the context of aesthetics, an area of philosophy. “It was about ‘feeling into’ things, like forms and shapes and art objects,” said Susan Lanzoni, a science and medicine historian based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and author of Empathy: A History. <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> Center for Empathy and Visual Arts Minneapolis Institute of Art Karleen Gardner <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> >From cultureofempathy.com <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> - January 11, 9:30 PM <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> Mia envisions taking a leading role in collaborating with museum colleagues as well as researchers, scholars, content experts, and other influencers to research and explore practices for fostering empathy and global awareness through the power of art and to share these findings with the field. <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> Bridging Political Divides with Empathy Circles (2019-01-19) <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> >From www.empathycircle.com <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> - January 10, 2:14 PM <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> Every Saturday, 10 AM – 12 PM PSTEveryone (left, center, right, etc) is invited to this free online Empathy Circle An Empathy Circle is a structured dialogue process. They are fully present with others.Empathetic people have a way of making you feel like you're the only one in the room. When they interact with someone, they give that person the gift of their full attention and respect, which is rare in today's hyper-distracted world. 2. They've mastered the art of active listening. 3. They tune into nonverbal communication. 4. They pause. 5. They replace advice-giving with asking questions. 6. They speak in terms of "we," not "me." 7. They imagine others' point of view. <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> EmpathyCircle.com - Bridging Political Divides with Empathy Circles <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> >From www.empathycircle.com <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> - January 11, 9:21 PM <https://cultureofempathy.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=83b412dd95de60e7…> An Empathy Circle is a structured dialogue process. Fwd: Powering Our Future
by Michel Bauwens 12 Jan '19

12 Jan '19

renewable tech dev's ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Katerva <Bettina(a)katerva.net> Date: Fri, Jan 11, 2019 at 4:30 PM Subject: Powering Our Future To: <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> “The global energy equation is one quite damaging to the atmosphere and environment. Carbon emissions are perhaps the largest problem to result from current energy systems. This category covers new technologies and innovations in energy production, storage, and delivery. It also includes technologies and initiatives focused on cleaning up current power systems.” This is how we at Katerva set out the stall for our *Energy & Power* <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> category. The flow of electric currents is what underlies the functioning of everything. Be it the human body, plants - or the economy. Bioelectronics - electricity on prescription next? Scientists suggest stimulating the body's nervous system using electric currents might help with many things including arthritis and alcoholism. It has already proven successful with drug-resistant epilepsy patients and plans are under way to use electric currents to restore bladder control to patients with spinal injuries. The Independent <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>, 6th November 2018 In our search of energy to support our needs we seem to have come full circle: before the industrial age and the start of a dramatic increase in consumption of fossil fuels, humans have relied on what we consider renewable energy today: wind, water, geothermal energy. While fossil fuels had been used to a very limited extent since 1,000 BC, it was the industrial revolution that made us humans realise the full potential of fossil fuels, and we have been relying on it heavily ever since. As you can see from the graph <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>, what has taken millions of years to create, we’ll have finished off in the blink of evolution’s eye. <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> *A quick history lesson* When we humans started off deliberately accessing energy to keep warm, process food, protect ourselves about 400,000 years ago, we used wood. It took us quite a while to figure out how to make use of another source for energy production: wind. Originally we used wind to propel ships - the oldest images of sailing boots are from 5,500BC and can be found on discs from ancient Mesopotamia. It was the Persians who around 500-900AD figured out how to use wind to power grain mills and water pumps; the Chinese got there around 1,200AD. The first time water was used to generate power was in the Greek colony of Byzantium around 300BC where the horizontal-wheeled watermill was invented, followed by the vertical one about half a century later in Ptolemaic Alexandria. Geothermal energy has been used by the Romans, Chinese, and Native Americans for cooking and later for heating their houses and baths for much longer than either. *Where to next* Realising not only the finality of fossil fuel - it is anticipated that we will run out in 50-100 years - but also the damage its consumption causes for the environment, the hunt for alternatives is on. The graph <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> below from the World Economic Forum shows the anticipated shift over the next twenty odd years. <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> The graph also shows the extent to which renewable energy is already been used, it seems we have almost reached the point where the scales tip. According to a report <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> published by the UN, the proportion of world electricity generated by wind, solar, biomass and waste-to-energy, geothermal, marine and small hydro rose from 11% in 2016 to 12.1% in 2017, an increase of 10%. Looking at another graph <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> from the World Economic Forum (see below), it is not only about replacing the sources for the energy we currently use, it is also about finding ways to generate more, much more. By the way, if you think that the digital economy means that we need less energy, think again: each individual bitcoin transaction uses almost 300KWh of electricity – enough to boil around 36,000 kettles full of water. In the 24 hours hours to 3pm UK time on the 19th January 2019, 272,428 bitcoin transactions were conducted… <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> While China is clearly the biggest consumer of electricity, it is also making a great effort to improve the proportion that comes from renewable energies. In 2017 alone China invested $126.6 billion - which is 45% of the total global investment in renewable energy. An interesting example how China aims to cure (rather than prevent) pollution, is a 100-metre-tall smog-sucking tower <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> in the city of Xian. It sucks polluted air into the glasshouses that surround the tower where the is heated (by solar energy) so it rises through the tower, passing through multiple layers of cleaning filters. <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> *What are they key sources for renewable energy* It seems that in the past we have predominantly relied on one of the four elements: fire. Now it is time to start drawing more on the other three: earth (geothermal energy), air (wind energy), and water (hydro energy). Below a little more on each, all examples are from our pool of nominees. Solar Power <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> Solar power is probably the first that comes to mind when thinking about renewable energy. Not surprising, as the potential is huge: sun has the power to provide planet earth with 1,800 times the energy we currently need. Capturing the sun’s energy is relatively easy and there are two different types of solar panels: photovoltaic and thermal. The former capture the energy from the sun’s light and convert it into usable electricity whereas the latter use the sun’s energy to heat water which can then be used for direct use, or indirect, ie for heating. In 2016 solar capacity installed amounted to 227 GW globally. Here some exciting developments: - The Sungrow Huainan Solar Farm <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> in Huainan, China, which can produce 40 megawatts, is the world's largest floating solar power plant . It produces enough power for about 15,000 homes for a year. Floating solar arrays have several advantages: they don't take up valuable space on land, and the water has a cooling effect, making the panels more efficient. The floating panels can also help to mitigate the evaporation of water for drinking or irrigation by intercepting sunlight before it hits a reservoir's surface. Supervision and monitoring happens via drones. - Australia based CSIRO <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> has developed new materials and processes to produce thin, flexible and semi-transparent solar cells based on printable ‘solar inks <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>’. These inks are deposited onto flexible plastic films using a range of processes including, reverse gravure coating, slot-die coating and screen printing. <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> Wind Power <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> The winds that cross the earth can satisfy our energy needs 200 times over, and wind farms are springing up everywhere. China is leading the pack: in 2017 alone they installed 19.7 GW of capacity and this source of energy is expected to deliver as much as 20% of global electricity production by 2030. In 2016 wind power capacity installed amounted to 432 GW globally. - As with other renewable resources, storage can be a problem - which is a challenge tackled by Nominee Temporal Power <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>, collaborating with Hydro One Networks <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>. Using a novel low loss flywheel generator combination their array has the capacity to absorb real power for up to six minutes, and release it back to the Hydro One distribution network for the same duration. It may not sound much but certainly helps with the spikes and troughs of the system. - Another exciting development is VORTEX <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>, a blade-less wind turbine. While the argument that wind turbines kill birds is true only under certain circumstances - generally only if the turbines are on breeding grounds or in migration paths - blade-less wind turbines are more versatile, take up less space, and avoid the problem altogether. <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> Hydro Power <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> & Marine Power <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> Hydro power, harnessed from the flow and movement of water is currently the biggest contributor to renewal energy. While the flow of rivers is most commonly associated with hydro power, it is the rise and fall of the tides that has much greater potential. The World Energy Council has estimated that if the planet’s wave power were harnessed, we could generate double the amount of electricity currently produced worldwide. In 2016 hydro power capacity installed amounted to 1,210 GW globally (even excluding marine power / tidal energy). - Aqua Power Technologies <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>' invention sits on the surface of the water and, unlike other wave power systems, works on a multi-axis basis; it can generate power no matter what direction the waves come from. - CETO <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>, based off the coast of Western Australia and named after the primordial sea goddess in Greek mythology, converts ocean wave energy into zero-emission electricity and desalinated water, using fully submerged buoys . From the first concept in 1999, the CETO 1 prototype started generating around 1 kW as well as freshwater. The latest generation, CETO 6, has a diameter of 20m and is expected to exceed the capacity of 1000kW. <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> - A different way to use water to address the energy challenge is a technology developed by Israeli-Australian startup Electriq~Global <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>: fuel that is to 60% made up of water. Their technology extracts hydrogen from liquid fuel which is en used to create electricity to power. Geothermal <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> Our planet contains a lot of heat - about 1.4 x 106 terawatt-years of heat energy flows to the Earth's surface every year, which equates to roughly three times the world's annual consumption of all types of energy. Countries that can easily access geothermal energy include Iceland and Indonesia where magma conduits and hot springs are easily accessible, able to drive turbines for electricity generation or provide natural heating. Geothermal capacity currently installed amounts to 83 GW globally. - ENERTUN <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> is a system developed by the Italy-based Politecnico di Torino that allows transforming a tunnel lining into a low enthalpy geothermal system (enthalpy is similar to energy, but not the same. When a substance grows or shrinks, energy is used up or released). It is integrated with pipes containing a fluid that exchanges the heat with the surrounding soil and can transport it to the surface. <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> Biomass <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> While the generation of fossil fuels takes millions of years, biomass draws its raw material generally from agricultural products such as corn, or other organic waste products. Problems with biomass emerge when it starts to complete with food production for arable land. - 2018 nominee Waffco <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> for example has developed a cooking stove that is fired with the agricultural waste generated as well as domestic and packaging waste material. - G4 Insights <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> have come up with a way to generate biogas. Rather than using gasification of biomass which requires temperatures of over 7000C, they use pyrolysis which occurs at 3100C to 5400C. The graph <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> below illustrates the potential if renewable (and traditional) sources of energy. <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> As already mentioned, a key challenge for many sources of renewable energy is the storage of the energy generated. Here some exciting developments our researchers have spotted: - H2GO Power <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>, one of this year’s discoveries, has developed an approach to storing excess power from renewables in the form of solid state hydrogen. - Solar Reserve <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>, our 2018 Category Winner for the Energy & Power category, has developed some patented technology to capture and store solar energy in molten salt, providing power utilities and energy intensive entities with 24/7 reliable, non-intermittent renewable energy. Heat loss is another challenge, particularly when it comes to the already power hungry IT industry - the power consumption of bitcoin transaction has already been mentioned. Scientists at Osaka <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> university have developer an inexpensive material that significantly improves recovery of heat waste and feed it as usable energy back into the system. *Who is leading the way* If asked which countries relied 100% on renewables for their energy in 2016, would you have named the following <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>: Albania, Congo, Iceland, Paraguay, Uruguay; Costa Rica (which in the source we used was still at just under 98% has moved up to 100% in 2018 <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…>). And would you have guessed that the following are almost there (already above 95%): Namibia, Costa Rica, Tajikistan, Norway and Zambia? A bit embarrassing to see that the UK (where I live) was at 28% - but still better than the US with just under 15%. A recent study by Stanford University <https://katerva.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6e2787de471dfbd83405ba12…> researchers predicted that the world could be powered entirely by renewable energy in just 20 to 40 years from now, so let's get on with it! It is not a question of what is possible, but what we decide to do. As the author of the study points out, "But it (it = a transfer to renewable energy) is possible, without even having to go to new technologies," Jacobson said. "We really need to just decide collectively that this is the direction we want to head as a society." What exciting sustainable disruptive innovations have crossed your path? Dictatorships are using big data collection schemes , surveillance , face-recognition , bots and trolls on social media sites , forged video and audio, to mislead and confuse citizens with widespread bias in algorithms trained by narrow demographic profiles and prejudices of most trainers and coders. While this article is an important, well-documented wake-up call to policymakers and civic organizations , it does not focus attention on the same mis-uses by corporations in psychographic tracking of social media users’ personal data , movements , health status , driving and other habits for advertising purposes and selling this data to brokers and marketers. The profit-making uses of AI and proliferating tracking devices in “smart homes “ , digital assistants , etc. were all showcased at the recent Las Vegas expo. Nor does this article propose or document the many creative responses now being debated : including the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR); pushbacks by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the ACLU and other civic groups; the calls for anti-trust enforcement laws to be applied to social media monopolies . These include Facebook, Google, Amazon , Twitter and the need to change their business models to Those earlier ,subscription-based like AOL, (rather than selling their users’ data and advertising); divesting of the some 450 smaller competitors they have bought up (e.g. Instagram, WhatsApp, and others), pass the bill in Congress to force them to conform to disclosure standards required of all other media, or regulate these media giants as public utilities. We hope that the publisher of this article, the Carnegie Endowment can join with Ethical Markets and the many policymakers now working to re-fund the US Office of Technology Assessment (OTA), which operated from 1975 until shut down in 1996 by the Republican majority in Congress, led by then-Speaker Newt Gingrich. This agency , worked with US universities and experts , to assessed the social and environmental long-term consequences of introduction of new technologies like so-called “AI“ and social media, to alert and inform Congressmembers, as I reported in “The Future of Democracy Challenged in the Digital Age”< http://www.ethicalmarkets.com/cadmus-the-future-of-democracy-challenged-in-…> CADMUS, Oct. 2018.
